Iran’s nuclear stance; Hank Williams Jr.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Thinking Right’s free-for-all Friday. Pick a topic:
• Universities looking for a community outreach project should organize classes for Georgia’s voters on “Picking a Sheriff 101.” Voters clearly don’t get the hang of it. Start with Fulton and Clayton counties.
• How quickly the new guys become the old. State Sen. John Douglas (R-Social Circle) and state Rep. Mike Keown (R-Coolidge) introduce proposed constitutional amendments calling for four-year terms. From Rabun Gap to Tybee Light, the little people are demanding relief from the high burden of voting for legislators every two years. And a compliant Legislature hears and heeds their voices.
• Again. If it takes gas and fertilizer to produce it and if you can eat it, you can’t afford to put it in a gas tank. It’s a dead rush for me between believing that man causes global warming and that food-based fuel is a ticket to energy independence. Get back to me when a commercially viable cellulosic ethanol plant comes on line.
• Hank Williams Jr., divorcing his fourth wife, declares it “one of the toughest days of my life.” Shouldn’t that be “one of the four toughest days of my life”?
• Georgia’s 34 technical colleges may have to lay off faculty because the number of students — and, therefore, revenue — is dropping.
“When a program declines, there may be a situation where you need to do away with faculty,” said Ron Jackson, acting commissioner. “We can’t have people on staff for a program that doesn’t meet the need for their community.” Can he say that? It would pass for common sense in the private sector. But in the public, it could be considered to be “slashing” education and hurting the unemployed.
• Salmonella in sushi, no problem here. But salmonella in peanut butter should be a jailable offense.
• Max Burns, give it one more try. Please. The former congressman was defeated by incumbent John Barrow in the 12th Congressional District that runs from Savannah to Augusta to Milledgeville by 864 votes in November, 50.3 percent to 49.7 percent. Barrow is one of the Surrender Democrats who joined 17 White Flag Republicans in voting to oppose the troop surge in Iraq. He should be defeated. Other Georgians, all Democrats, who voted with Barrow should, too, but — with the possible exception of U.S. Rep. Sanford Bishop in the 2nd — all are completely safe politically in sending their message to the enemy to sit tight, we’re beat. Rep. Jim Marshall (D- Macon) was thinking and voted right.
• Headline: “Franklin starts partnership for rights center.” Partnerships for nonprofit ventures, when mentioned by the public sector to the private, mean “you pay, I partner.” Partnerships for profit-making ventures, when mentioned by the private sector to the public, mean “you pay, I partner.” I’m a stakeholder, so I know these things.
• Get your credit cards out — or somebody’s. Delta Air Lines plans to start nonstop flights later this year to Nigeria.
• Iran skipped Wednesday’s U.N. deadline to freeze its nuclear enrichment program. Talk to follow. And talk. Until, one day, Iran has nuclear weapons and a madman at the trigger. The matter, said Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki “has to be decided peacefully with the United States.” No. The world. If the world fails, then it’s our problem.
• Is it clear now? Federal courts have no jurisdiction over habeas corpus petitions by Guantanamo Bay detainees. Congress can and did decide jurisdiction. Move on.
• Four months is a long time to wait to fill a congressional seat. On the other hand, the 10th Congressional District of Georgia will elect a Republican — and so it’s not like the district is missing an opportunity to influence Nancy Pelosi.
• A Democrat’s my new hero — and it’s not Joe Lieberman, either. It’s state Sen. Robert Brown of Macon, who has filed legislation to prohibit the state or any other government from naming “any public building, site, structure, road, highway, street, intersection, interchange, bridge or other public property” after him. Well, limited hero anyway. Until he introduces another misguided bill like the one to raise the state minimum wage. Again: the minimum wage is zero.

Good morning, Jim,
I will respond to selected items from today’s Thinking Right.
With regard to Picking a Sheriff 101, isn’t it about time we professionalized that office and made it like the county school superintendent, an appointed position filled by a professional?
Four year terms for legislators…a great idea. Make it better by limiting all legislators to two terms only!
Excellent source of non-fossil fuel energy…all the hot air from the 50 state legislatures, governors’ offices, not to mention the Congress and the White House. But come to think of it there are quite a number of fossils in those places!
Hank Williams, Jr. …too bad, Anna Nicole is no longer available.
Georgia’s 34 technical schools losing students…haven’t you heard, Jim, everyone is supposed to go to college. No Child Left Behind and all that. I don’t know who in the he** is going to put in the septic tanks and landscape the lawn…Oh, wait…Miguel, where are you Miguel?
Salmonella…my Momma’s and my Granny’s kitchens, were they in existence today, would be closed by the CDC immediately! We have become a people with weak digestive constitutions…likely from too much fast food…if we can call it food.
Iran’s ignoring of the UN demand for a freeze on their nuclear fuel enrichment program…we should have swatted the Persians years ago, but Jimmy Carter didn’t have the gonads. Given the fact that Rumsfeld and Bush have weakened our conventional forces in the failed Iraqi occupation, the only alternative is tactical nuclear weapons. From what I am hearing, Bush doesn’t have the gonads to use those either. Well, if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em. Let’s see how does Ayatollah Jim and Imam Philosopher grab you.
Habeas corpus…when the radical Islamists take over, it will not be an issue!
On a matter not touched by Thinking Right today, Judge Larry Seidlin took a lot of guff for turning what should have been a four hour hearing into a 4 day television circus. Kudos to the judge! In his eccentric way, he wore down the piranha lawyers and loser principals in this tragic case, and in the end he did what was right. One other thing…is it just me or does Judge Seidlin resemble a “bald” Henry Winkler?

Good morning all. It seems that Sen. Douglas and Rep McKeown emulate the wisdom that animated the Republican Congress 2005-2006, and wish to bring same to Georgia. Clearly destined for higher office, though perhaps not for long.
Jim, our leftist friends will not appreciate your global warming and ethanol comments; remember we presently have a frenzy to funnel as much public money as possible to Archer Daniels Midland and DuPont, to save us all.
As to the peanut butter, let’s secretly serve the canapés at the Peter Pan and Walmart board meetings this quarter, give ‘em a surprise.
Saw an argument we need to forward to Mr. Barrow: As our 25,000 brave young soldiers head out to try to extinguish the murderous Islamists, imagine the effect our Congress could have in the send-off by saying “We have every confidence in your capacity to destroy the enemy,” instead of a limp-wristed “You are doomed to failure.” Sure, and they support the troops. We don’t question their patriotism, but it sounds like drugs have affected their judgment. Those idiot democrats don’t know how to inspire our fighting forces. If you are only going to posture politically with “nonbinding resolutions,” why not offer one to urge success? “Loser” mentality is ingrained deeply there; they even seem to like it, and think it praise-worthy.
Can’t go to Nigeria – I’m a blood donor, and you are barred for a year if you go to a mosquito-infested backwaters country. But I can see the reason the new- and smarter- Delta management would want to embrace that tourist Mecca.
Amazing, isn’t it, that courts could seriously entertain the possibility that POWs held overseas should have right to sue in Federal court during a war.

By the way, I’d love to see any of our self-proclaimed “libertarians” defend Wooten now that he’s taken this position on Guantanamo. “Unchecked police power for government is a GOOD thing! Only terrorists worry about rights!”
Brilliant stuff, Wooten; thanks for making it clear just how anti-American the current regime wants to be.

Hi Jim,
Re Georgia Dems who voted for the resolution against Iraq: Wouldn’t a “private sector” analysis of the war conclude something along the lines of “it’s not prudent to continue to spend hundreds of billions of dollars on an effort that is producing not only few, but arguably negative, results”?
Where’s the cost benefit analysis on the war?

Please explain your 08:24 post. It does not make sense. Gitmo and police powers are not even remotely connected. Gitmo is a military base, not a police station.

When the boys down at the capital vote to allow me to carry my 45 and my M-1 on the front seat I’m going to shoot up any road sign that has the name of one of Those People.
I don’t know why people is against a war with Iran. We already got our troops right next door and could knock them off during the surge. A few A-bombs would help do the trick. It would be hard for them to get their own A-bomb if all they got is a bunch of cinders glowing kind of green.
Me and my buddy Jim Earl decided this Judge Seidlin is all right. We could use a few judges that could cry while they pass out the death penalty here in GA. They could talk about the victims and how they don’t have no life no more and sob and all. Then they could hand out good Southren justice. We are losing the race to Texas. We need at least 6 executions a month to keep up and pass them.
And I say make all Republicans elected for life and have elections only for Democrats so we can turn them out of office. It’s just a pity that even visits from my hero, George W. Bush, couldn’t get them 2 Republicans elected last year. Must be a bunch of libruls and Those People down there.
We didn’t throw out our Peter Pan peanut butter. We made a whole bunch of peanut butter sandwiches and fed them to Joe Bill. We waited for the x-plosion but nothing happened.
Well, time to make my run to stock the bars for the Baptists this weekend. They don’t like selling booze on Sunday but they sure drink a ton of it. Tell Sister Dusty we got a real big copperhead to handle down at the Church of Holiness on Sunday. Don’t be late.

Van: “police powers” means more than just police officers, which should be obvious to any reasonably educated person. It covers anything the executive branch is responsible for, including the military.
And any real libertarian wants nothing to do with the Bush Regime—which explains why Boortz is such a major cheerleader, for example.

I always have trouble with the concept of private-public partnerships. It always seems that no matter who puts the money up, the public entity always has to call the shots.
Since the public sector has such a grand reputation of being efficient and thrifty, maybe they should not enter into the business arena. Let business do business and let government govern.

Jim, would you want this voice “heeded” if the legislature was controlled by Democrats? The last thing anyone should want is to give any politician more time to sell himself to his special interest johns. The only way I am ever for extending any politicians term is if a one and out law is attached to the legislaion. And that includes the presidency of the United States and every congressman and senator. It is time to make career politicians and extinct species. Mexico is really on to something with their one six year term for their president.

Highly amusing and wonderfully fitting that todays column starts with a sadly rather restrained dig at two useless, corrupt black GA sheriffs whose blatant racism/incompetence are already legendary. One racist bigotedly fires competent white folks for NO reason and then hilariously has to swallow its racist pride and reinstate the white folks. The other equally pathetic sorry excuse for an elected official in Fulton Co can’t even do something elementary in the job description, like run a jail properly or protect courthouses.
All those pig sick of anna nicole coverage puke up in a plastic bag and send it in a plain brown envelope - without a stamp - to HiTllary Rotten Klinton’s campaign donations c/o The Arkansas Rapist’s general unaudited slush fund. Get the address off David Geffen.

Van: Yes, isn’t it terrible when the citizens of the country want to have a say in things that affect them—like economics?
The public sector is permanently involved in business already—it’s just been siding with capital and against labor for the last few decades. Now that we want to restore the balance and look out for workers and consumers for a change, there are cries of “Free market! Keep the government out—except for special tax incentives, loopholes, bailouts, special-interest legislation, etc. etc.”
The cry to “keep government out of business” is a thinner smokescreen than most.

Wood-based ethanol production is right around the corner. The plant I’m invested in opens in 3 weeks. If successful, they’ll be marketing ethanol at about $1.10 per gallon, vs. approximately $3.50 per gallon for corn-based ethanol.

Brian Curtis,
You still have not explained. If your reference to Gitmo and police powers refer to the recent court decisions in regards to habeas corpus, that has always been the standing of combatants. They do not enjoy the same rights and privileges as the citizens they are trying to kill. Only a social liberal would ever think that. During WWII, the German prisoners, held here in America had no rights in our courts, they remained under the jurisdiction of the military, not the civil courts.

I’m with you on this one Jim. Once that caught hold and we became “relient” on corn to power us we would have just gone from oil cartels to corn cartels. I can just see it now. Between alledged “market forces” and weather, $100.00 per bushel corn would be right around the corner. And then there is the old OPEC trick of manipulating the supply. Growers would be payed not to grow corn to keep prices high. Ethanol is not the answer. The technology exists already to produce vehicles that can achieve extremely high mileage, which reduces relience on foreign oil. Ethanol would produce the same easily controlled and manipulated system that we already have today. It would just be another big bag of candy for the same big business interests.

What is the mission of US troops in Iraq?
Who is the “enemy” in Iraq?
Who is the surge targeting?
Are Roadside bombs and Copter flack the only offensive capability of the “enemy” in Iraq? (Talk about limited range)
What end game scenario would allow our troops to withdraw from Iraq?
Does it even matter what happens in Iraq for the next twenty years? Roadside bombs have limited range.
Roadside bombs have limited range. What are we doing over there?
We are tempting the cockroach theory to naturally select an enemy tactic of experiment and review that will quickly evolve an effective strategy and offensive capability under fire. War engenders quantum leaps of ingenuity in weaponry and tactics. We are creating the hybrid monster that will survive to fight again, just like trying to kill cockroaches always makes them evolve into invinsible pests. Whoever the pest is.

This is an interesting take you have. The largest and fastest growing labor unions and pool is with government.
The business of government is to govern, when the government gets into businesses it governs, that is a conflict of interest.

Truer words were never spoken!!! If I may repeat your words in reference to Democrats in Congress:“‘Loser’ mentality is deeply ingrained there; they even seem to like it and think it is praiseworthy.”
That is true, not only in Congress, but evidenced here daily by liberals. Every day we hear how NON-SUPPORT is really support. I guess we are back to that old line about “what a tangled web we weave…when first we practice to deceive..” with liberals. The deception came when they tried to find a substitute for their motto “Bush sucks!”

For six years now, Vice President Dick Cheney has been answering questions with a blank stare and a scrunched-mouth scowl delivered in a hushed quack. His latest spin on British Troop withdrawal justification is the one sentenced history of our involvement with the world post 911. Who will prosecute this man and stop him? He is lying on borrowed diplomacy and our foreign policy advocates may never recover.
Either it doesn’t matter what happens in Iraq because roadside bombs have very limited range, or Cheney knows something about terrorist’s plans for attacks in the USA that prevent him from saying anything real.
Or this war really is about oil, 41 vs 43, and defense industry lobbying success.

Term limits? Victor Hill’s should have been 1 month.
Alternative fuels? Have you heard about the nut found in Africa? A source for bio-diesel fuel and just four seeds are fatal if consumed. The plant has a 50 year life span and thrives in drought conditions.
A poisonous seed?
Hank Williams Jr? “His cheatin’ heart is four times due…he’ll cry and cry and say it’s you.”
Technical colleges? Man I hate to hear that, really. Does Jackson have anything to say about all the government-run agencies that have proven ineffective? Any impending layoffs there?
Sal Monella? He’s a suspicious fella. You suspected he was in your chicken broth, didn’t you? Why doesn’t he just keep his nose out of things where it doesn’t belong.
Those Surrender Democrats? I’d like to ask them one important question. Are you wearing boxers or briefs. Let ‘em breathe for crying out loud.
Iran? You know, I’m always amazed when I read about how many smaller countries are dependent on the U.S. for our military strength. It’s so important for so many around the globe, but yet liberals are all too eager to surrender it and them.
Habeas corpus? You should cut & paste that one over at MoveOn.Org, but don’t expect a warm welcome Jim.

Dear Brian @ 8:58, I am distressed that you don’t know the difference between police and military. That inability to distinguish the two functions is endemic among socialist dictators in the third world, but Americans have no difficulty – normally – in finding the lines between those efforts.
Similarly, do you erroneously believe libertarians oppose national defense, or even the local gendarmes? To give you a hard black line: a libertarian acknowledges that (absent statutory law) the Constitution allows the government to wiretap anyone and everyone, with or without permission of anyone, but believes the government should not be allowed to use wiretap evidence in court against the person whose wire is tapped. It may be an invasion of privacy, it may be a waste of precious economic resources, but so long as the government is unable to PUNISH – key word - one for any information obtained from the wiretap or the “derivative fruit,” no liberty is impinged. All we want is the right to be left alone. We don’t care what anyone knows.

Jim,
On habeas corpus…not movin’ on. The recent Court of Appeals decision will probably be appealed to the Supreme Court, and hopefully in the meantime, Congress will reinstate habeas corpus for persons detained at Guantanamo as an enemy combatant. It’s an important legal principal necessary to protect, not terrorists, but the innocent from unlawful detention.
I know many would argue that the writ of habeas corpus only exists for Americans, but if we want to export our values around the world, then when given the opportunity to lead by example, we should apply the same constitutional protections to others. Incidentally, doing so would help our fight against terrorism — not hinder it.
Mid-South,
A little history. We did swat Iran in 1953 when we replaced their democratically elected leader with a U.S. backed dictator – the infamous shah of Iran. People have a tendency to get pi$$ed off about such things. Most Middle Easterners and Iranians are well aware of our history in the region; most Americans are not. The connection between 1953 and 1979 and today is direct. There’s a CIA term, “blowback”, that we should all become familiar with.

Funny thing…I was talking to Dick Cheney around 8:30 last night about what we can do to pump more government money into quail reserves in Texas, but he kept going on and on about the “enemy”:
“they’re everywhere…there, in the treeline…just beyond the sandy knoll. I can just make out the towel on their heads. Can’t you see them? They’re looking right at us!
DAMMIT…YOU SEE THEM DON’T YOU? THEY’RE THERE. RIGHT OVER THERE!!!!

Frankly, the ‘mission accomplished’ scene on the aircraft carrier was inciteful for veterans like me, with any awareness of Bush’s own military record. His daddy bought his way out of the National Guard, and there he was in a flight suit, as if he even finished his flight training in F-111’s. His last assignment was for confinement in Colorado Springs due to to AWOL, and he didn’t even show up for that, hitting the campaign trail for someone in Alabama instead.
That’s the number 1 reason I didn’t vote for him. Better to have NO military record than such a poor record as he has.

One thing about the surge: we are getting closer to defining who the enemy is. Apparently the enemy is invisible and looks like the population of the surge area. The enemy is just being themselves in their natural habitat and because they look and act like 100 percent of the population in the surge area, we cant see them. They are not retreating but just being secretive when they plant these roadside bombs.
Is there one fact in any of the preceeding? I dont know. I just listen to the news and ask questions.

CJ,
Am I correct in thinking you would have allowed German POW’s access to our civil courts during WWII?
The vaulted Geneva Convention does not allow this. It clearly states the combatants fall under military jurisdiction, to be accorded the same right and privileges as military that captured them, i.e. military law.
I still ask, why would we extend the rights of our citizenship to those non-citizens that would destroy it?

There is a maxim that goes: whatever a man projects as his truth is the opposite of what’s in his heart and mind. The last refuge of a scoundrel then is the refutation of a scoundrel.
So Bush’s military acumen, displayed so bravely to the world now, is in fact the polar opposite of his own military truth?
What is the mission of US troops in Iraq.
What is the national policy about our intervention’s goals in Iraq?
Can anyone enunciate a valid point about the last four years in Iraq?
I cant. I honestly dont know why, how, where, who, or what concerns we should have about our troops mission in Iraq.

Dusty, sometime people of concious have to make that choice when an ideology becomes so unpalatable that the only way to defeat it is to choose the lesser of 2 evils. Any political analyst will tell you that 2 things happened in 06. 1: People voted against Iraq. 2: Many moderate republicans and independents opted for change. Why? Because many of us/them could not bear to see the far right wing of the Republican become the definition of republicanism. It is anything but. Yet a fringe moniority was making an overt attempt to hijack the party and define it as the party of their far right beliefs. Whether you will admit it or not, lots of moderate republicans and independents accustomed to voting for republican candidates decided to take back the party by temporarily opting for change or staying away from the polls. Purely and simply. We/they ran away as far and as fast as possible from what amounts to a tyranical minority residing on the fringes of the party that no mainstream American wants to be associated with. When the republican party once again becomes mainstream, truly conservative both fiscally, and philosophically, we/they will return. But never again will we allow the right wing to be the definition of the party. If the party doesn’t once again become what it used to be, it can just about consider itself dead. If the party becomes what conservative truly means once again, we/they will come back. If not the party will become the one that got pounded in 64. That will be it’s future.

Southern Democrat: “I would not advocate voting against persons who voted in favor of the Iraq War or against the non-binding resolution, even though that is where I stand ideologically.”
I do advocate voting against those who voted against the resolution. In 2002, the “intelligence” was misleadingly presented - there’s a narrow window for those who legitimately trusted what we were being told at that time.
In 2007, knowing how flimsy the case against Iraq was, there’s no excuse. The only reason I’ve heard for voting against the resolution is blatant partisanship and fear of “emboldening.” Hogwash. Vote ‘em out.

Brazil has quite an interesting alternative energy program using sugar for ethanol.
Regarding a nuclear powered Iran. Flawed document that it is, the Nuclear Non Proliferation agreement does provide for countries like Iran to have access to nuclear power (it also calls for the US and other nuclear powers to eventually get rid of their nuclear weapons). Also, the creator for some reason put uranium within their borders (no need for yellowcake from Nigeria). I am not too crazy about the mullahs with nukes but even the “reformists” in Iran support a nuclear program, so regime change is probably not the answer in the short term either.
Bombing is probably not the answer either. One of the side effects of the Israeli bombing of Osirak (which was being built according to at least the letter of the non proliferation agreement) was that it told countries like Iran if they wanted access to nuclear energy, they had to do it underground.
Regarding the detainees at Guantanamo, still not sure the short term strategic gain has been worth the long term hit in prestige. The last large scale experiment with unlawful combatants (Vietnam) did not fare so well when US soldiers started being captured. In fact, that was one reason the US started granting POW status to VC fighters.

Just try to blog one truth about our mission in Iraq.
“I would say probably between 200,000 and 500,000 barrels a day is probably unaccounted for in Iraq,” says Mikel Morris, who worked for the State Department’s Iraq Reconstruction Management Organization (IRMO) in Baghdad. “Depending on fluctuations in the price of oil, the thefts could be worth $20 million to $30 million per day.”
A Houston-area petroleum engineer, Morris says Iraq’s oil industry is wide-open to corruption because there are no working meters anywhere in the system to keep count of how many millions of barrels of oil Iraq produces or exports. “It’s like a supermarket without a cashier. There is no metering. And there’s no metering at the well heads either. There’s no metering at any of the major pipeline junctions,” he says.
Hmmm… Sounds to me like somebody IS accomplishing their mission.

Jim Wooten said, “Is it clear now? Federal courts have no jurisdiction over habeas corpus petitions by Guantanamo Bay detainees. Congress can and did decide jurisdiction. Move on.”
Perhaps you’d like to “move on” Mr. Wooten, but if we do, the military can arrest any American citizen it wants under any trumped up charge it wants to and any time it wants to e.g. even protesting.
And with holding the rights of American citizens without trial is already being done. For example, Jose Padilla, who probably is, or would be, a homegrown terrorist, but he IS an American citizen and under our constitution is entitled to face his accusers.
If this treatment can happen to him or another citizen, it can also happen to you, to me, or anyone else on these forums.
Let’s not “move on”, Mr. Wooten. Let’s write some columns supporting the rights of all citizens to a fair trial. I don’t know about you, but I would call that responsible journalism.
You don’t have to be a blind conservative not to see it, just an ignorant one to deny it.

Thanks abc. I guess the next logical question would be, does the existing number of trees supply enough bark, twigs, etc to supply the high demand. Or would there be ever more and more trees chopped down to meet the demand? It just seems that any of the “natural” solutions to reducing the dependance on oil creates another problem. Recently my wife bought a Honda hybrid. The damn thing gets 60 miles a gallon with no reduction in performance. A 144 volt nickel cadmium battery supplements the gasoline engine that acts as the generator for the battery. This vehicle is incredible and that existing technology can be put in any vehicle made. This makes a hell of alot more sense to me than any corn or wood based fuel alternative. Man being man, and human nature being rather predictable, just how long would it take for the corn and wood to become just another system just like the one we have now. Maybe even worse.

Any political analyst will tell you that 2 things happened in 06. 1: People voted against Iraq.
That is a common mischacterization by the Left and mainstream media on America’s perception of the Iraq conflict. That 75% stat they toss around like an old coin doesn’t mean what they want you to think it means. Most people in this nation do not, I repeat, not want the US to lose in Iraq. That 75% stat refers to people not liking the way things are currently going in Iraq. There’s a big difference in the way questions are posed and the way the answers are represented. Naturally, the left only presents what they want you to see - through their prism.

Ethanol is superior to oil in that it’s a renewable resource, whether it’s made from corn, wood and rice by-products, or whatever else. It burns a lot cleaner and isn’t as much of an environmental risk. Current automobiles would run on an 80% ethanol/20% gas mixture, albeit with lesser fuel efficiency, at a greatly reduced price-per-gallon. Gas is currently mixed with ethanol up to 15%, it just isn’t advertised.

Van,
Respectfully, this is my major problem with the current administration’s plan (or lack thereof) when dealing with detainees.
You would acknowledge that our legal system (either civilian or military) rests on presumed innocence, right? And that this applies to citizens and non-citizens, alike? And you would acknowledge that the Geneva Conventions were championed by the U.S. and other nations to protect all combatants in war from torture and depraved conduct?
So… the administration (in contravention to the advice they received from JAG lawyers from each branch) decides that detainees, either captured in the field or through “extraordinary rendition” are not subject to any protections, that they can be held indefinitely, and that they are not protected by law, ANY law.
Now… here’s my question:
Are you willing to bet our nation’s honor, our spirit, our credibility, and our system of governance on the word of the CIA, NSA or a bureaucrat in Washington? Because that is what is happening EVERY DAY. The intelligence we have gotten is CRAP, because, SURPRISE, people don’t tell the truth when they have electrodes strapped to their testicles and glass rods broken in their genitalia! They tell you whatever will make you stop doing it.
So now we are left with a shockingly large number of people that exist in a netherworld. We can’t prosecute them because people like John Wu and Bybee think that they aren’t protected by the Geneva Conventions and subject to the military courts. We can’t charge them with a crime… what WAS the point of USA PATRIOT Act if the targets of it aren’t subject to its jurisdiction, by the way? We can’t free them because, whatever their level of hatred of America before, they have now vowed to do whatever it takes to take down a country that allows others to torture people and not have access to a justice system. As one former CIA operative said, “Every day, we are creating generations of jihadists with this system.”
So… nice work, Bush Administration! Every single day you create more terrorists and give them a rallying cry. Thank you for throwing away 230 years of history and precedent. Thank you for discarding our national ethos, built on freedom, justice, and liberty for all, so that you can get bad intelligence from people who might have driven bin Laden from one camp to another after torturing him for 6 months.
Just out of curiosity… if alleged terrorists are so dangerous that we can’t bring them into a courtroom, military or civilian, and anyone that has any contact with bin Laden can be taken into custody indefinitely… WHY WAS BIN LADEN’S FAMILY ALLOWED TO LEAVE THE COUNTRY IN SEPTEMBER 2001? Just curious.

Where is the connection between Gitmo and the military arresting US citizens?
The Posse Comitatus Act and the Insurrection Act substantially limit the powers of the Federal government to use the military for law enforcement.
Neither of these has been impacted. There is a vast difference between holding a non citizen combatant and a US citizen. BTW, one of the ways to be striped of your US citizenship is to bear arms against the US.

As far as the war goes, I think that people need to wise up about the nature of war. People weren’t thinking about it in the brutal terms it warrants before we went into Iraq. War is an atrocity; if you’re not willing to bear responsibility for the atrocity, don’t commit to war. Simple.
3100 dead is NOT a large toll. Compare that to casualty rates in other wars. That statement does NOT minimize the price those men and women paid. They made the ultimate sacrifice.
Was their sacrifice for a worthwhile goal? No. Was their sacrifice in vain? God knows. We CAN’T pull out though, we’ll ALWAYS be there, else Iran will overrun Iraq, if no other reason than to seize the 28,000 barrels per day of oil coming out of each well.
We’ll beat terrorism most effectively by coming up with alternative fuels. If noone is buying oil, then the Middle East goes back to camels and tents, it’s the only resource they have.

One more question for “Writer’s block” relative to smaller, more vulnerable countries.
Why were the liberals in the U.S. so eagerly in agreement with Hugo, when he called Bush a fascist? Have you checked out what he’s been up to lately? He’s shutting down an aluminum plant in Costa Rica.
“But economic reasons are not Chavez’s true motivation. Instead, he is angered by Costa Rican President Oscar Arias’ recent criticism of Venezuela, in which Arias called Chavez’s regime a “democratic dictatorship” and criticized Chavez’s newly endowed special powers under the Enabling Law.”
“The closure of the Costa Rican plant is one of Chavez’s first forays into punitive diplomacy, and it is not likely to be his last. The move could indicate a shift in his method of dealing with dissent — but only if the dissenter is less powerful than he. The smaller nations of the Caribbean and Central America — almost all of which fall under the Petrocaribe deal — are in this vulnerable category.”

Many Iraq war supporters would like to frame the issue as “winning” or “losing” but they would be wrong. The end result in Iraq will be a Shia dominated government closely allied with Iran. That is where we are right now in Iraq (SCIRI party head, Hakim, went from his oval office meeting with Bush to Tehran to help celebrate the overthrow of the Shah) and we are fighting to subdue the opponents of this Iranian backed regime. The Prime Minister of Iraq, Maliki, and the head of the largest political party in Iraq, Hakim, both lived in Iran in exile while their political parties, Dawa and SCIRI, were organized, funded and supported by the Iranian clerics. All that is left to be determined is whether we help with the last of the ethnic cleansing or we leave it to the Maliki government. The Kurds will pretend to support the current government in exchange for Kirkuk and its oil. Also to be decided is whether we get our permanent bases or not. Maybe that is why we are still fighting.
The British troops who are leaving were guarding our supply lines from Kuwait and the oil terminals in Basra. Southeastern Iraq is now controlled by the Shia supported by Iran. Remember that picture of the people in Vietnam trying to get into the last helicopter? We think we can just pack up and leave any time we want, but how long before we have to fight our way out? “Newsweek” interviewed Gen. Petraeus’s brain trust as to what the “surge” is really all about. Not comforting.
For those who think it would be a disaster for us to leave Iraq, ponder this. What would Ronald Reagan have been able to do economically and against the Soviets if we still had 200,000 soldiers in Vietnam spending 10’s of billions a year in 1981 when he took office?

To me, they are the biggest threat to freedom in this country today. And obviously what happened in 06 was largely due to the rest of us sending a message to this would be “taliban”. When the republican party moves back to its core beliefs and more toward center I will pull straight ticket once again. There is obviously a reason that the more fringe candidates on the republican side of the ledger that have declared themselves candidates in 08 have not a snowballs chance in hell of being nominated for the presidency. Mainstream republicans do not want to be associated in any way form or fashion with the lunatic right wing of the party.

No, it is not ignorance to support your country in war time. We are still in a war we voted for and that has not changed. It was an American promise to its citizens and to the Iraqis.
Some Republicans thought they were getting something different in 2006 but what they got was a weak kneed resolution to undermine troop morale. If you think that is the way to get our troops home safe and sound, I disagree with you. Our enemies love it.
This an American war, not Democratic or Republican. If you do not support it, just say you are an antiwar protestor and don’t blame it on politics.

Actually, I did not mean to include that last comment.
My intent was to call for responsible journalism from Mr. Wooten who apparently wants us to trust the government without question, in particular the Bush administration and its handling of “the war on terror” which can include holding American citizens without charges or trial.
That IS irresponsible!
As to these; “The Posse Comitatus Act and the Insurrection Act”, it’s taken me a minute to find this, but I think you’ll find it interesting;
“In a defence budget bill signed into law in October of 2006, provisions were inserted which heavily modify Posse Comitatus, rendering it null with presidential approval. Criticism has been scarce but harsh. Posse comitatus is now null in cases of natural disaster, disease outbreak, terrorist attack, or “any other condition.
“This arguably destroys the original act outright, particularly in the context of a war on terror that is indefinite in nature.”
In short, anything Bush/government/military deems “indefinite in nature” can get an American citizen arrested and held without trial. Whether it’s one citizen or more is immaterial.
If we follow Jim Wooten’s logic, we might as well have no constitution. In fact, we wouldn’t.

We won the war and achieved victory by defeating the Iraqi military in 2+ weeks in 2003. Does anyone remember? We then spent the next 3 years bumbling away the victory without a plan—mainly because we got entrapped in a “kinder, gentler” frame of mind. Now we must eliminate the opposition to a (hopefully) evenhanded Iraqi government and go home. It won’t be pretty, but it is necessary if Iraq is to survive. If Iran tries to impede us they must not succeed. We have a score to settle with them after they stormed our embassy and in Teheran and held our people hostage. (Remember that one?) They did not recognize our territorial rights in Teheran, so we are under no obligation to recognize their property or personnel in Iraq. Go get em! whf.

Van, yes—the same “intel” that Clinton somehow didn’t feel the need to start a war over. THAT intelligence.
Which reminds me: The issue is not whether or not people believed he had weapons. There were differences of opinion, and many people were wrong. The issue is that in the Clinton years, we held Iraq in check without invading.
It was the current administration that decided to invade, for better or worse, depending on “Shock and Awe” to keep us from needing more than roughly 125,000 troops—and with Rumsfeld threatening to fire anyone writing plans beyond the scope of 6 months. I don’t need to recap how profoundly wrong that gamble has turned out.

You must be reading things that do not exists. It was Clinton’s policy that first decided to rid the world of Saddam.
That policy was based upon the 1998 Iraq Liberation Act (P.L. 105-338), which stated, “It should be the policy of the United States to support efforts to remove the regime headed by Saddam Hussein from power and to promote the emergence of a democratic government to replace that regime.” This policy was unanimously approved by the Senate and strongly supported by the Clinton administration.

After Desert Storm, Americans wondered why 41 didn’t capture the entire Republican Guard and Saddam and depose him. I analyzed that the reason was Iran. We needed a good army to counter the Iranians. I was satisfied with that. That was wrong. 41 knew about the 10K year old feud called “The Mesopotamians and the McCoys” which is the ancient form of the modern sectartian feuding we now see.
you see, Iraq is a subset of larger feuds that are both ethinic and sectarian, that is, racial and ideological.
So any solution on one plane will be non binding on the other, and that’s why this mesopotamian feud survived 10K years.
41 knew this. What’s worse? That 43 did know it too, or that he didn’t know it?
The ancient tribal feud that is the story of mankind lives in Iraq. We may as well try to solve the god/devil thing in the bible, which is even older, oh, I’d say about 43 quint-quadrillion years old.
Bush: “I invaded hell, cause lucifer is a bad man, and he tried to kill the holy ghost. Limbo and purgatory are safer now that we’re trying to establish a dogma that is self sustaining, self ordaining, and an ally in the war against the devil…..”

William Felder,
See CJ’s comment about Iran at 10:13. One shouldn’t make the observation that the Iranians didn’t recognize our territorial rights in 1979 without also mentioning that we didn’t recognize the rights of the Iranian people to choose their leaders in the 1950’s. Cause and effect.

Van@11:46 - I guess you overlooked the “support efforts” part of that statement. I see nothing there stating that the it is the policy of the United States “to remove”.
Basically diplomatic word parsing but a surprising amount of our tax dollars are used just for that purpose.

“No, it is not ignorance to support your country in war time. We are still in a war we voted for and that has not changed…This an American war, not Democratic or Republican.”
Certainly, yours is a Bush style thinking; in 2004, Bush claimed a “mandate” because the “Republican” party maintained a congressional superiority.
In 2006, Bush no longer had that “mandate”, yet still, by doing a little slipping here and a little sliding there, claims he still does as also do you; “This an American war, not Democratic or Republican.”
Come on, get real, this is a Bush war pure and simple and the congress, (republicans and democrats) has sat on its a* allowing Bush to use the American military like it’s his own private army.
Iraq is a hell hole right now all because of the unfettered ambitions of a goddamed fool named George W. Bush.

Van, 11:46 - I see nothing that insists there be military “efforts” in that phrasing. Diplomatic and political pressure is a form of effort, that was paying dividends. Once again, who was President when our forces went in to remove Saddam? WHO MADE THAT DECISION, and who holds PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY for the outcome?
Chuck @ 11:59: “we didn’t recognize the rights of the Iranian people to choose their leaders in the 1950’s. Cause and effect.” Let’s not forget The British and Americans’ creation of Israel in part of British Palestine. Al Qaeda hasn’t.

What is the mission as of this moment of our troops in Iraq?
Has the surge already morphed into something else? Is it just now “patrol and see what happens”?
Are we patrolling more frequently in new areas with more troops and everyone of the IRaqis is just going about their daily lives with americans passing through and amoung them looking for weapons or suspicious characters or just trolling for snipers, or wandering into roadside bombs with their limited range to be any threat to the USA at home?
Is the answer to all war questions, “Lets wait and see if this new plan works?”
There will be more new plans. Should we always just wait and see if they work or not?
Wait and see if this new strategy works, I mean, come on, really. The liberals are unfair to ask for reasons or methods or plans, cause they never wait to see if what we’re doing is working or not, you know, Cheney knows a guy who drove for seven hours without being killed in Iraq.
Wait and see. Drive around more.
Dont ask questions or expect any answers other than wait and see if this new plan works.
It’s a new plan. I cant give away the details of the new plan or the terrorists will listen to me and use it to win.
If cheney gives away any more answers than what he gives us, then the terrorists win.
We dont want the terrorists or the enemy or the bad guys to win.
We want to win. Winning is everything.
How will we know we won? When cheney knows a guy who can drive around for eight hours without being killed in Iraq.

Dear Writer’s block @ 10:31, your maxim is that each truly thinks the opposite of whatever he says? I have often thought that the animating philosophy of leftists, thanks for confirmation. If I take your affirmation at face value, does that mean I don’t trust you?
Dear CCR @ 10:31, the flaw in your analysis is that mostly “moderate” republicans lost in 2006, and it was mostly democrats who projected themselves as conservatives who won. Extraordinarily few socialists were elected in the democrat swing, although the effect of voting moderate democrats was to empower the moonbats. Any honest observer would have to concede that the national democrats had no platform at all, merely ran as know-nothings. Thus were elected with no plan for anything. I appreciate that your sentiment is to attempt to return the Republican to the party that had no core beliefs and consistently lost elections, i.e., 1976, when the Establishment Republicans ran the show. My libertarian republicans and our allies, the Christian Right, will resist your blandishments.
Dear jm @ 10:44, you may be right – it’s even possible the evil Islamists would cut off the heads of soldiers unfortunate enough to be captured if we don’t let them file suits in our courts. Minor correction, yellowcake is in Niger (that is their only product, nationwide – Joe Wilson revealed for us all that Saddam’s minions were admittedly there on a trade mission, but said the nation’s president promised it was not in search of yellowcake. Probably wanted the tuki-tuki bird concession.) Evidently I am less enthusiastic than you about mullahs with nukes, as I think bombing would be a good start.
Dear Dennis @ 10:45, not only can the military “arrest any American citizen it wants under any trumped up charge it wants to and any time it wants to e.g. even protesting,” they can also shoot to kill any American stupid enough to be on the other side of the battlefield. Perhaps we ought to require a motion in court before we allow a soldier to discharge his weapon. You don’t have to be ignorant to be a leftist, but it helps.
Dear Southern @ 11:00, you reasonably ask, “are you willing to bet our nation’s honor, our spirit, our credibility, and our system of governance on the word of the CIA, NSA or a bureaucrat in Washington?” I would add to your list, “Federal judges.” I am far more comfortable betting on the honor of our noble military than that of any political or judicial entity. I think I disagree with your history lesson – I don’t think POWs captured and housed outside the US have a long history of jurisprudence.
Dear CCR @ 11:14, you have it screwed-up – we don’t send soldiers to die, we send them to kill, to make the rest of us safer. Your flawed assumption distorts the rest of your analysis, although I think analysis is a good idea in your case.
Dear TH @ 11:16, I understand leftists always want to believe the worst about people, but I think those with purple fingers will not submit to an Islamist dictatorship – democracy is infectious. And a better observation about Reagan is, “imagine what he could have accomplished against the enemies of the US if he had not had leftists opposing every effort.”
Dear WHF @ 11:35, well-argued. I wish I had written that essay.

The Chicken Haws are still talking loud and saying nothing! They have no hesitation about sending someone else to fight and possibly die for their purported duty, honor, country maxim. When do they get in line, raise their hand and step forward to volunteer to uphold the creed they think everyone else should adhere to. If these folks were to join the fight, we would not have a problem with our military being literally broken.
The “islomo-terrorists” would know that we have a military full of “Rambos” and they would immediately surrender. For all of us that has walked the walk instead of talking the talk, I urge all of the Chicken Hawks to immediately run to the recruiting office; your country NEEDS YOU!!!!!!

JBM, the Iraqis have already voted for an Islamist government. The parties who received the most purple fingers were the Islamic Daawa Party of Jaafari and Maliki and the Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq led by Hakim. Both parties were formed from Shia exiles living in Iran. The Daawa party actually fought on the side of Iran against Iraq and was involved in the bombing of our embassy in Kuwait. jbmlaw@12:42 - my error, I believe Mr. Wooten’s comment about Nigeria was still in my head. While for some (hopefully they are among the ones detained in Guantanamo), there is no hole deep enough or dark enough to keep them in, even they have some rights. They should have some venue where they can challenge their status under the ideals and values we are supposedly trying to instill in the middle east. The military courts, while a good start, still have a lot to be desired.
Also, since President Bush (and all Presidents before him) have fallen short in the “all knowing” category, I feel very reluctant to give him (and his successors - possibly Hillary Clinton) the unchecked powers he desires.

Dear Southern @ 2:11, apologies for my confusing language, but I am contemplating the instance where a non-uniformed combatant is caught. The traditional rules authorize execution of such combatants after a field trial. The Bush administration philosophy has been to question them rather than kill them, and I doubt much useful information has been obtained. Best current example, the son of the Iraqi warlord who was captured returning from Iran ought to be executed in the next 24 hours. That may discourage some undesirable activity.
Dear JK @ 2:14, you foolishly assume that your government protects you. It merely increases your living expenses, twice: (1) as CPA dictates unnecessary higher expenses for your manufacturer (do you really believe air bags save the lives of anyone other than those people too drunk to fasten their seat belts? Van,
The whole point of the debate is not what the terrorists are, but who WE are. I think this is where the Bush Administration has done the gravest harm. President Bush & V.P. Cheney’s comments in the aftermath of 9/11 made for good copy and certainly added to the bloodlust that we all felt after we were attacked, but have been extremely damaging to our global reputation and our (heretofore unmatched) stance in the moral highground. Power is lost when the knowledge of how and when to use it is diminished.
Based upon your theory, Van, should we kill innocent civilians because the terrorists did so? Should we start sending suicide bombers into markets because the terrorists do?
Jbmlaw,
Forgive me for oversimplifying, but I would respond as follows. War is seen as an evil on the earth that is sometimes necessary and forgives that most terrible sin of murder both legally and morally. Thus, killing someone in a war who is trying to kill you is justified. Once someone throws up his or her hands and says, “I give up,” we are supposed to overcome our baser instincts and not pull the trigger.
If you think someone is plotting to kill civilians, it is a crime and the person must face the judicial system. If you think an organization is plotting to attack our country, it is a war and our military is tasked with defending us with force until the threat subsides.
So, the person without a uniform in our gunsights who seems to intend to do harm to us? Either shoot him, take him prisoner, or charge him with a crime. There is no other way. And if he is taken prisoner, he must be granted the protections of the Geneva Conventions and, inter alia, access to the Red Cross, not because of who he is, but because of who WE ARE.

If Bush sends troops to war, it must have been the right decision. If Bush detains somebody in Guantanomo, he must be guilty. If a poor black kid is given a draconian sentence for a ridiculous crime, he must have deserved it. If you express support for a Democrat, you must not pay taxes. If you say you’re against the war in Iraq, then you’re committing an act of sedition. If you’re bilingual, then you’re destroying our culture.

C.W. Odessa,
Dear ignorant one,
Yes, Bush did send troops to Iraq, but he did so with the consent and support of Congress. As a democracy, we trust our representatives to do the right thing. In this case, Congress gave Bush authority on two different occasions, Fist was on Sept. 18th 2001, to fight terrorist wherever they are, and the second time was for the Iraq war, Oct 16th, 2002. Both times the resolution were passed in both houses of Congress.
Either Congress was swayed by Bush’s brilliance or the weight of evidence. If Bush did lie then Congress was a fool not to looking it and impeach Bush.
Under our system of laws, everything was done correctly. In the 14 month run up to the outbreak of War, the UN agreed with the President.
Based on this, I can only say that you have not reached beyond your twenties and never served in uniform. You appear to have a low to mid range IQ and a low education level of achievement.

Having served in uniform (You imply you have) I will say your second statement is more likely than your first.
The past six plus years have shown the sorriest damned Congress this nation has ever had; Republicans all falling into line out of loyalty to the party rather than to the best interests of the country, and the democrats wringing their hands saying “Woe is me, woe is me.
And in both cases all of them supported the war because they were more worried about getting re-elected than about letting this country go to hell in a handbasket.
The congress went along for the pure and simple political reason that they too, thought this war would be a “slam dunk” and the present mess was not supposed to happen.
Well, you see what happens when party loyalty is more important than the American people and their country.
I think the term is “s** happens”, and in the case of attacking Iraq, it has.

Her physicians offered her no gleam of hope for the future and stated that, in all probability, she would not walk again. OK to teach gay marriage, judge rule A federal judge in Boston threw out a lawsuit filed by parents who wanted to keep their young children from learning about gay marriage in school. U.S. District Judge Mark Wolf said federal courts have decided in other cases that parents’ rights to exercise their religious beliefs are not violated when their children are exposed to contrary ideas in school. Schools are “entitled to teach anything that is reasonably related to the goals of preparing students to become engaged and productive citizens,” Wolf said in his ruling. Tonia and David Parker of Lexington, Mass., sued after their 5-year-old son brought home a book from kindergarten that depicted a family led by a gay couple. Another couple joined the suit after a second-grade teacher read the class a fairy tale about two princes falling in love. Yay! Mark Foley and “reverend” Haggard in love! Yay!-Atlanta Urinal
Further proof of what a freakshow the public education system has become, the liberals aren’t finished dragging us to the bottom by any means.
I’ll bet no one has to be taught about normal relations between a man and a woman, by the time a kid is 12 years old they’ve already figured most of that out on their own.
Because it comes to them naturally.
What you freakshow liberals are doing is teaching our kids what is unnatural, something the vast majority would not ever even consider.
Why?
So that the one freak that it does come naturally to doesn’t feel bad about himself?
We’re going to turn every kid in the country into a freak so that we don’t hurt the feelings of one freak?

Instead of spending time on teaching our kids things like history and civics, our worthless government schools are teaching such wonderful, awe-inspiring subjects like gay marriage and putting bananas on condoms. But, in all fairness, that article did reference A*achussetts. Nothing suprises me coming out of that liberal hellhole. Sickassed liberals.

WootenDull, great post. The sickening acceptance of this lifestyle must end. This is the only reason I HATE the vice President. Him and his family of sickos are truly perverting the American population. They are bringing babies into this and accepting this lifestyle.
Its time for this to stop. Cheney has much more influence on people than Mass. does. Cheney has a national stage.
When his daughter’s baby is born they should yank it out of her arms and turn it over to a traditional family. Then the VP should quit.
Its all about the values.

As soon as “Picking a Sheriff 101” stops becoming picking a candidate solely on race, perhaps Fultoon and Clayton counties could learn something about thinking outside the racial glass house. The same goes for “Chocolate City” New Orleans, but that’s another topic.
Funny how all the Northeast and Loon West coast limolibs want us to go corn, yet don’t want a thing to do with the Red states that produces it. Just once I’d like to see someone from Iowa tell the Al “global Jet-A burning” Sore and Nancy “flyover redstates” Pelosivich to: “Grow your own damned corn and shove it in your tank!” Man-made global warming is turning into the left’s de-culto religion. Finally they can say they have a religion even if it’s still based upon man. All I need to know is that the left supports it and the right doesn’t support it (that MAN is predominately causing global warming anyway).
It is already proven that farm animal flatulence contributes to global warming, deep sea thermal vents contribute to it, volcanoes contribute to it, and solar activity contributes to it. I’m sorry, but one-seventh of one degree in one century just isn’t enough for me to go crying to the UN Mommy ala Kyoto (of which China and India wouldn’t be a part of considering their old hooptie cars pollute more than our newest Tahoes, not to mention their non-EPA standard factories… go figure). I don’t want those environazi fascists telling me how many times I can go to the toilet per day, that I can’t have a fire in my fireplace, what I can’t cook on my stove, what kind of toilet paper I need to buy, and what kind of clothes to wear. I don’t want the environazis telling GM, Ford, and Daimler-Chrysler that they can’t make a vehicle that averages less than 40mpg, and that Georgia Pacific can’t release more than 10 tons of waste per day in paper production. To hell with them.
Hey, last year according to the earthbats we were supposed to have a massive hurricane season due to global warming, just like global warming wiped out New Orleans during Katrina (that Bush & Halliburton caused). But hark? What’s that? Not ONE hurricane hit US shores last year? Not ONE? Well I have yet to have one liberal ‘splain to me how in the hell we can know that mankind is actually causing the earth’s overall weather pattern to change when we can’t even freaking forecast a HURRICANE season, let alone when and where it’s exactly going to rain at any given time. Then of course we have the liberal environazis who are trying to get international laws passed to jail anyone who doesn’t believe that man is causing global warming. And these jackals on the left call Conservatives fascists? Pathetic.
So Georgia’s tech colleges are showing a decline in student enrollment. I wonder if this is because nobody seems to want to learn a trade anymore like plumbing, HVAC, and electrical work? It seems to me lots of our head-in-the-clouds youth want to either go to a university and hope to make $100,000 right out of college or become a music star, pro sports jock, or the next great actress. I also wonder how much of that decline is contributed to the cap on HOPE credits that dual-enrolled high school students can use at vocational-technical colleges. With all that said, it’s no wonder we are raising an entire generation of idiots.
Cheney said it best of the Surrendercrats when he said they are “validating al Qaeda.” Poor old Pelosivich couldn’t handle that “toss-back” and called the White House to protest (and only got the chief staffer.. HAH!). Waaahhh! But the most hypocritical flatulence that came from Pelosivich was when she said Cheney’s comments were “beneath the dignity of the debate we’re engaged in and a disservice to our men and women in uniform.”
Is that so? What the hell does the RAT pack think it’s been tossing OUT for over three years? Was it NOT beneath the dignity of debate and a disservice to our armed forces when Dick “Turban” Durbin compared our soldiers to Nazis and Russian Gulags? Is it NOT beneath the dignity of debate and a disservice to our armed forces when the RAT pack constantly beats the “Bush lied, soldiers died” drum when knowing damn full well most of them voted for war authority and there was no intentional LIE told by Bush? Was it NOT beneath the dignity of debate and a disservice to our armed forces when Ted “drunk Olds U-boat commander wannabe” Kennedy got up on the pulpit and said the war in Iraq is a failed policy and it was “lie after lie after lie” when our troops are still freaking OVER there? What the hell is WRONG with the Party Of The Permanently Miserable? GOD they make me sick.
Delta flights to Nigeria? What happened? Did Jessie “corporate shakedown” Jackboot threaten to stage a boycott because there weren’t enough African nations representing Delta’s international routes? I wonder what all those pirates off the coast of Nigeria who attack Western ships are going to do NOW. ‘Scuse me while I make a mad dash to Expedia.com. I can’t wait to check out the Four Star restaurants and Five Star hotels there. Hey, maybe I can get on one of those Nigerian automobile purchase plans and bring back a Nigerian car with me ala BMW from Germany. What cars are made in Nigeria? I gotta check that out.
So Iran ditched Wednesday’s UN deadline? I am so shocked. ‘Scuse me while I pick my mandible up off the floor. How dare they! Talk. More talks. Some more talks. Talk talk talk. Resolution after resolution. Line after line drawn and redrawn and re-redrawn and re-re-redrawn. Oh to hell with 17 more violated UN resolutions ala Iraq. This time around, let’s just let Iran have their nukes, sell them to islamoterrorist fascists, watch them wipe out Israel, and eventually take out a few cities in Europe and the UK before taking a few of our cities out (San Freaksicko first please islamogoons). After all, that’s a small price to pay for “peace at any cost”… at least according to liberal Surrendercrats like Cindy Sheephead and Hollywoodhead goons from the Left coast. There was an MSN article the other day titled, “What if Hollywood ran America.” Well, there’s your answer. That would be this nation and the world according to a sickness of being a non-real-world candyass in the reality disease of liberalism.
So, the Gitmo Resort islamoterrorist guests can’t have access to US courts. Ain’t that just a damned shame. What a HUGE loss for Abscessnity International, the liberal Defeatocrats in Washington, and the liberal Hollywoodheads on the Left coast. Of course, these assclown liberals just don’t understand that this is a WAR we are dealing with and not some bank-robbing criminals for deciding jurisdiction. Freaking defeatist idiots. Sick.

I’ve been watching the internet progress over the years. I’m becoming an advocate for restriction. Never thought I’d hear myself say that, but it’s our kids….
Former ACLU Chapter President Arrested for Child Pornography
The videos described in the complaint depict graphic forcible intercourse with prepubescent females. One if the girls is described in court documents as being “seen and heard crying”, another is described as being “bound by rope.”
Rust Tierney coaches various youth sports teams in and around Arlington, Virginia, according to court documents.
In the past, Rust-Tierney had argued against restricting Internet access in public libraries in Virginia, writing, “Recognizing that individuals will continue to behave responsibly and appropriately while in the library, the default should be maximum, unrestricted access to the valuable resources of the Internet.”
When you think about how our society is !?!progressing,!?! try to imagine what we may be facing in the not so far off future.
Children forced into beastiality?
Children in snuff films?

I agree with the lost liberals on this blog on the end to the sacrifice of our military in Iraq. I disagree on the method.
Collateral damage be damned we must end this in a manner similar to the end of WWII. For example, we drop leaflets warning everyone that Tuesday will be a very bad day to be in Fallujah. Surround the area and search every man, woman and child, vehicle and anything else on the way out of town. Confiscate all weapons and items that could be weapons.
Next, bomb Fallujah out of existence and then apply the shampoo theory again in two weeks at the next “insurgent” stronghold. Wash, rinse and repeat until the fighting stops or there are no more places to hide.
The cost in lives and money would be less if we just erase the cities and rebuild.

The reason? It’s all he/she has in the arsenal. No intellectual capacity, no debating skills, no valuable information he/she can share.
Indecent and offensive filth is the best he/she has to offer.
And changing names to repeat this behavior only reflects on ALL LIBERALS, but I don’t think he/she even cares about that.

Since you seem to be rational in your thinking, and put forth the same military tactic the husband supports, I have a question.
Given that all the liberals argue that aggression begets aggression from the extremists, how do you think such measures as the one you proposed would impact the more moderate Muslims in the ME?
Taking into consideration that a normal human psyche is geared towards survival, would your proposition serve as an deterrent to any further radicalization.
It certainly is what I would count on, but would have to be followed by reconstruction and financial support as you suggested.

Ron Paul does not like it:
“The NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) Superhighway
“The ultimate goal is not simply a superhighway, but an integrated North American Union — complete with a currency, a cross-national bureaucracy, and virtually borderless travel within the Union. Like the European Union, a North American Union would represent another step toward the abolition of national sovereignty altogether …
“[T]he United States should not engage in the construction of a NAFTA superhighway, or enter into any agreement that advances the concept of a North American Union. I wholeheartedly support this legislation, and predict that the superhighway will become a sleeper issue in the 2008 election.”

@@,
The Muslims have aggressively attacked anyone in their path for the entirety of their existence. The argument, agreession begets, etc., is valid only with rational humans who have as their goal to continue to exist. Our enemy in this war sees honor in their own death and in the deaths of their children. I would argue the position of Americans is just the oppsite. To think we can negotiate with, or simply ignore the threat of, these radical Muslims is folly. The only times throughout history the radical Muslims have behaved is when they have been defeated militarily. Read about Thomas Jefferson’s dealing with the Muslim pirates at the turn of the 19th century.
The moderate Muslims are constrained from speaking against the radicals by their wish to live. To answer the question posed by that irritating Writers Block, the goal in Iraq is to give the moderates an opportunity to govern and succeed. IF the goal is attained then the rest of the Muslim world will see the radicals can be defeated and no longer will the free-thinking Muslims live in fear.
I would also like to believe the “Honey Pot Theory” of the war. Our leaders felt this war would draw the attention of the radicals and terrorists who would otherwise be traveling around the world and the US and they would now be in Iraq. We have them in a theater whereby we may not be able to recognize each combatant but they are not here and they are in a killing zone.
The fall of several countries in Europe to Islam is more imminent than any of us would like to admit. Western Europe is caving and if we do not stop the influx of Muslims to this country their goal of assimilation followed by overwhelming us with their numbers will certainly be achieved.
I could go on but the reality is that some opponents can only be defeated militarily. There are other means but we do not have the time to allow us to become independent of Middle Eastern oil or for an alternative to fossil fuels to develop to a point the Muslim supply of money evaporates.

Compost denies being a liberal rag during a PBS Frontine story on the media. They asked the Compost’s Editor At Large his opinion of liberal bias at the Compost:
Q. Every person we speak with who would identify themselves as a conservative journalist says: “Bias? If you think we’re biased, look at The Washington Post, that liberal newspaper.”
A. “In our news gathering, we seek to be strictly nonpartisan and nonideological. We’re human beings, we make mistakes, but we do not set out to be, nor do I think we are, liberal. And judging from my e-mail traffic in recent years, the left is much more critical, and much more angrily critical, of our coverage than the right has been.”
Oh I geddit. Because they get more flame mail from alleged liberals that means they are not biased left. Sure. And the al Jazeera Constipation is not biased left because they publish right-wing Vents.
So what separates a liberal rag from a flaming liberal rag? Apparently, the amount of fuel. Or the non-amount of Conservatives that even read that liberal cesspool and comment about it.

To be sure, there are still risks for Basra in this decision. That city and its environs have faced serious periods of warfare among various contending Shia militias in recent years. Some militias are more closely affiliated with Iran, meaning Tehran may sense more of an opportunity now to promote extremist groups that are friendlier to its interests. And any increase in chaos, due to such intermilitia strife or to simple criminality, could slow efforts to make Basra an example for the rest of the country — not to mention efforts to improve oil production and transportation in and around southern Iraq, something crucial to the entire country’s economy.
Not if they got the US Air Force up thier a-ss, Basra will be the last thing they’re worried about.

The North American Union is only the first step in the plan. Elements of both parties actively seek a one-world economy. To accomplish this goal all international borders would have to disappear. David Rockefeller openly brags about his participation in such a plan and dreams of the day the plan becomes reality.
There are over 4.6 billion people in the world who live below the level of the poorest in the US. Do these deep thinking 1 worlders think we can possibly bring 4.6 billion people up to our standard of living? No, but they are willing to drop the standard for most of us to create their dream. The biggest flaw in their plan, as I see it, is that the US and our culture will cease to exist.
Our culture will disappear without the 1 world economy if we do not stop illegal immigration and drastically reduce legal immigration.
Members of our Congress vote to give illegals the benefits of Social Security, Bank of America elects to give credit and credit cards to individuals who are not able to prove they are legal residents and the North American Union is the darling of both sides of the aisle. How much more proof do we need before we recognize our elected representatives only represent their own interests, not ours?
The Constitution directs the President and Congress to protect our borders and defend our sovereignty. Do you believe they are doing so?
