Blue Dogs win; Pelosi Democrats lose

As expected, the two Georgia Congressmen in competitive districts — Jim Marshall in the 8th and John Barrow in the 12th — survived recounts announced Wednesday. Marshall won by 1,752 votes in the Middle Georgia district and Barrow won by 864 in the East Georgia district. Former U.S. Rep. Max Burns of Sylvania was an exceptional challenger; the 12th District shouldn’t be seriously competitive for Republican. The Macon-based 8th was more competitive than expected. Marshall seemed before Nov. 7th to be the rising star of the state Democratic Party. After Lt. Gov. Mark Taylor and Secretary of State Cathy Cox, Marshall was the Democrat with the best chance of appealing statewide. The closeness of his race with former U.S. Rep. Mac Collins in a year that belonged to Democrats nationally suggests, however, that in a Presidential year, Marshall could be very vulnerable.

His vulnerablity could be sharply increased depending on the agenda and tone set in the U.S. House by Speaker-to-be Nancy Pelosi. Democrats like John Lewis, Hank Johnson and David Scott are free to swing as far to the left as they choose. Others, however, like Marshall, Barrow and U.S. Rep. Sanford Bishop had best be careful. Georgia Republicans have established their competence in raising money and turning out the vote. Right candidate, right issue and those three seats could go Republican in 2008.

All of which brings up the issue of the “Blue Dog” Democrats who are now in the process of organizing in the U.S. House. Those are the Democrats, many of whom represent districts like those served by Marshall and Barrow that are far more moderate than Pelosi’s San Francisco, who want Congress to focus on issues like a balanced budget, the national debt, Social Security funding and others that appeal to fiscal and social conservatives. The coalition, led by U.S. Rep. Allen Boyd (D-Fla.) so far includes 44 Democrats. Boyd, incidentally, is a native Georgian, born in Valdosta, who now represents the Florida panhandle, including Tallahassee and Panama City.

The Blue Dog-GOP conservative coalition should be the voice and it should materially influence the agenda in the new Congress. If Southern Democrats are to survive and prosper, it is in following the Blue Dog lead. Marshall, Barrow and Bishop can survive as Blue Dogs. They can’t as Pelosi Democrats.

Good morning all. Newt has a similar argument in today’s WSJ, and the argument is sound. This country has not had a Leftist majority since the Carter era. Even the most partisan Republican would have to admit that Clinton never enacted any Leftist agenda (maybe tried with health care, but never enacted!) The split within the Democrats was inevitable and will be healthy for the country.

Perhaps more intriguing to me is Mr. Newt’s argument today about the coming split among the Republicans, the moderate-realists vs the conservatives. Newt argues that the alignments in the Congress will set (the conservative Republicans plus Blue Dogs) vs (the Pelosists combined with the moderate-realist Republicans.) Newt argues that in such an alignment, the Republicans will lose big in 2008. Thus President Bush’s job is to keep his moderates on the conservative team.

I look forward to seeing the analysis by our leftist friends. Will they walk away from the leftist agenda?

Jim,

You’re a little off center here. I think you are concerned about the preservation of the Republican party and viable candidates in Georgia, whereas the real problem is rather or not Madame Speaker can find compromise between the more liberal elements of her party and the more conservative elements. You imply it, but you’re too busy trying to decipher Georgia politics to state it outright. The effectiveness of our government for the next two years depends upon that compromise so that the red tide might be kept at bay.

Blue Dog Democrats is an anagram of the Blue Man Group, another clown act with allegiences as flexible as the Cirque Du Soleil, which is an anagram for Lame Duck Congress.

If the minority leader is Trent Lott, who shot himself in the foot as carelessly as Cheney did, then the Republicans have no chance in ‘08.

Mr Gingrich is quite right. Such an alignment would also give him a chance to be a viable candidate for the presidential nomination. The effectiveness of our government for the next two years depends on exactly those compromises. Well stated.

So the Dems are in ‘power’ and Nancy P is supporting the controversial (ahem criminal) Murtha for leadership, and there’s already dissension in the ranks. Just what I suspected, nothing much will change in Congress. Pelosi already stepped in something that stinks, and who will help her out?

Isn’t that the same Newt who spouted all that holier-than-thou bunk about how he and the GOP were going to make congress accountable, and reflect the values of the American People? The “Contract With America”…isn’t that him?

Interesting how he continues to opine from his ivory-tower with no real history of accomplishment…other than defrauding the country and enriching himself.

Also interesting how folks who claim to be so morally grounded and so fully entrenched in “conservative values” continue to listen to him, while at the same time chastising others for the exact same behaviour.

Oh, and Jim….what exactly is Pelosi’s “leftist” agenda…can someone be more specific?

The Blue Dogs will be beaten about the head and shoulders by the Pelosis and their radical MoveOn.org true believers. The Dems will thus self-destruct in time to blow their chances of winning the White House in 08. Look for the Clintons to step in real soon now to try to regain total control of the Party to keep this from happening. Hillary needs for the Dems to pretend to be moderate until she is elected President. After that the charade can be dropped but until then it must be maintained. It should be interesting to see the battle between the Clintons and their Blue Dog allies and the socialism-now crowd represented by people like Pelosi.

Wooten: “Blue Dog Democrats…want Congress to focus on issues like the national debt, Social Security funding and others that appeal to fiscal and social conservatives

Jim — Nearly ALL Democrats have always wanted Congress to focus on the national debt and Social Security funding (“nearly” is a key word). You’re right. Those are fiscal conservative positions, which make me wonder how Republicans get away with referring to themselves as conservatives.

With regard to social issues, like most Democrats, most Blue Dogs are largely libertarian (pro-choice, support medical marijuana, allow assisted-suicide, etc.) — again, as you said, these are conservative positions.

In short…Democrat liberals are the conservatives in Washington. Republicans are fakes.

Getting specific, the only Blue Dog Democrat that I know much about is David Scott. Representative Scott voted to reduce inheritance tax rates (no, they’re not “death” taxes) and grow our national debt. He also co-sponsored Neil Boortz’ so-called FairTax bill which would raise taxes on middle and lower income families and also exacerbate the debt problem. Scott is not a fiscal conservative, and therefore, he has got to go!!!

On a side note, this liberal is going to take another conservative position. A U.S. Airways acquisition of Delta would be bad for Atlanta and Delta employees, but most of all, it would be bad for consumers — both in the short run and in the long term. It’s time that Bush’s Department of Justice did its job and enforced the anti-trust laws. These laws were passed to maintain free markets and competition. They’ve been ignored for the past 25 years or so, and the result has been increasing economic insecurity for families.

I love the spin about these mythical “BLUE DOG” Democrats this past week after the elections. Its seem the Republicans are grasping at any glimmer of hope for their party. Unfortunately, once you actually look at the FACTS you find that this so called majority of conservative Democrats coming to the next Congress is not as large as the media spin will have you believe. And if you bother to look at the actual records of those elected you will see that they follow the Democrats platform almost word for word, and the few instances where they don’t, and not all disagree about the same things, they still intend to vote their party, particularly once Speaker Pelosi starts cracking the whip and getting them in line. Nothing will get to the floor that does not conform the Democratic agenda. Committee assignments will follow loyalty to the party agenda, just as it was with the Republican majority. Anyone hoping to find some silver lining in the Democrat’s win, would be better advised to look elsewhere.

Let’s not underestimate the anti-kkkonservative vote, as opposed to the liberal vote. The anti-Southern Strategery, if you will. It is hard to separate the anti-war vote from the anti-warmongering vote, the anti-fundamnentalist vote, the anti-gunnut vote, the anti-racist vote, the anti-gaybasher vote, the anti-misogynist vote, the anti-arrogant vote and the anti-whiner/hater vote, all of which are against the GOP (Woo-ten Klanners partake in many of the above).

Guys like Marshall and Barrow have their work cut out for them - they represent areas where religious superstition runs high, and appeals to reason, intellect and people’s good nature are suspect - sort of like the problems the AJC is having been a blue paper in a red(neck) state.

But I have noticed the stridency of the frightwing radio jocks has continued unabated, which now I am seeing as a good thing - other areas of the country are saying enough already, and hate radio and Fox are now causing a negative return to the GOP.

As you’ve probably observed, jbmlaw is an amoral partisan hack who will say anything to support the guys promising him the biggest tax cuts (despite our third-world-like national debt). Unfortunately, his penchant for using passive voice verb tenses, regular use of talk-radio misdirection tactics, shameless name-dropping and heavy reliance on Roget’s Thesaurus have given him unwarranted credibility among some on this blog. Actually, he’s smoke and mirrors.

The good news is that since jbm frequently uses this blog to relay misinformed opinions that we usually hear first in the right-wing media, he gives us lots of opportunities to set the record straight. For that, I am grateful.

Dream on about a coalition of Blue Dog Democrats and conservative Republicans. In the South, if a conservative Democrat hasn’t turned Republican by now, he’s part of an endangered species.

No, the Democratic liberal and moderate movement will thrive only if it writes off the South as an intellectual and moral wasteland. Let the knuckle-draggers continue to spout their hate and religion-based superstitions. But keep it all confined to the South, which this country can do without in so many ways, and put the campaign money into political races elsewhere.

It is impossible to satisfy the South without a return to a plantation mentality. The Democrats would be wise not even to try.

Why not identify and provide facts about an actual problem or issue, the discussion of which could facilitate understanding and thought processes which might lead to the implementation of a viable solution, or at the very least, a workable compromise?

Funny also how maggot brain among other treasonous illegal immigrant cowards on here proffer daily lickspittle grovelling to the corrupt to the core Turdtha. Doubtless maggot brain has yet to see the shameful FBI surveillance tape of him discussing a $50,000 bribe with an undercover FBI agent in a hotel room with Turdtha clearly saying (a slight paraphrase) “after we’ve done business together for a while - likely I’ll take the money then”. Given Turdtha eagerly jumped all over the military chaps in Iraq for an alleged crime he had no idea about for sure - purely to make disgusting ignorant political demagoguing remarks - Turdtha is the kind of demoNcrat who should resign in abject disgrace NOT be cravenly elevated by the hateful far left cut and run ambitions of the shrivelled leftist hag botoxPelosi.

the exact same demoNcrats that the black racist J Lewis and other black bigots disgustingly race baited about in that vile infamous ad in Fulton County. Bull Connor was a demoNcrat!!

crapman also ignores the demoNcrats’ far leftist lurch and supposedly imminent displacement of relatively MODERATE demoNcrats like J Harman by (we are told in the media) a corrupt leftist black judge who was impeached for bribery. Crapman also ignores the left’s supposed embracing of the ultra pinko corrupt demagogue Turdtha instead of the more moderate incumbent demoNcrat minority leader.

My friends TFTT and Chazman approach Hillary from different perspectives, but is it not obvious that she, alone, determines what happens in the Senate over the next two years? Forget Pelosi, who is riding the back of a tiger. The real power broker in Washington is female, and is in the senate. Hillary’s leadership will guide the votes of many marginal Democrat seats.

For the past three years or so we have seen the new Hillary: softer, more (dare I say) conservative, and arguably more electable as a result of the image makeover. It would have been much easier for her to vote against anti-Kelo type judges (likely to enjoy Bush appointment) over the next couple of years from a losing-minority vantage. Now that the Democrats are in control, will they disapprove of conservative judges appointed by Bush, thus allowing the Republicans to go back to their strongest play over the past six years? (Stopping Leftist judges was a winner for Republicans throughout the Clinton years. In contrast, in 2002 and 2004, nearly every time a Senate Democrat in a red or 50/50 state adhered to the Leftist line in beating a conservative judge appointee, the Senator lost his job. There were no such lost nominees discussed in the 2006 elections.)

As an alternative to sincere opposition, Hillary could grill but ultimately accept the nominees, who could tilt the balance of the court long-term against abortion, pollution controls, workplace rules, etc. and all of the other favorites in the leftist agenda. How do my leftist friends believe Hillary will move?

And I only vote GOP.

Trash, you have fallen in line like the other good sheep. 33% of my vote last week went to the Republican party.

Gov - Phil Bredesen (D) Senator - Harold Ford (D) US Congressman - John J. Duncan, Jr. (R)

John Duncan has got to be the best congressman in the US. I have been voting for him since ‘88 and voted for his father before that beginning at age 16. I’m not led by the nose by the D’s as you are by the R’s. (Pillhead Limbaugh would be proud of you.) I can prove why Mr. Duncan is such a good congressman:

Statement of Congressman John J. Duncan, Jr. (R-Tennessee) September 10, 2003

There is nothing conservative about the U.S. policy in Iraq.

Conservatives have never believed in massive foreign aid. Our occupation of Iraq has become the largest foreign aid program in the history of the world.

We are building or rebuilding thousands of Iraqi schools, giving free health care to Iraqi citizens, and even making back payments to the Iraqi military and Iraqi retirees.

Last week I read that we are sending 60,000 soccer balls there. Our Founding Fathers could not have foreseen this in their wildest dreams.

Conservatives have never favored huge deficit spending. We are now told our deficits will reach an astounding one trillion dollars counting this fiscal year and the next.

Supporters of the war scoffed at predictions that we would spend $200 to $300 billion in Iraq over the next 10 years.

Now, by the most conservative estimates, not counting many things that should be counted, the Iraqi operation will cost us $167 billion in just the first two years.

And because we are in such a deep fiscal hole already, we will have to borrow all these billions we are spending there.

Conservatives have never believed in world government and have been the biggest critics of the United Nations.

Yet some prominent war supporters, while criticizing the U.N. in one breath, would say in the next that we had to go to war to enforce all the U.N. resolutions that Saddam Hussein had violated.

If this is not world government, then what is? And why should we put almost the entire burden of enforcing U.N. resolutions on the U.S. military and American taxpayers? That is not conservative.

Conservatives have been strong supporters of national defense, not international defense.

Senator Robert Taft wrote: “No foreign policy can be justified except a policy devoted…to the protection of the liberty of the American people, with war only as the last resort and only to preserve that liberty.”

Conservatives have never believed that the United States should be the policeman of the world.

Trash, you may think Hastert is ineffective, smug and other unprintable things, but you would happily vote for him if given the chance. After all, you only vote GOP.

Time4theNoose so there are corrupt Dems? You’re kidding! I think both sides have established their ability to fend for themselves while they give us the shaft.

What you may not understand is that corruption from either side hurts all of us. If you truly are a conservative, then you should be outraged by corruption on either side but especially on your own.

Ignoring the sins of our own party are what got us to the state we’re in today. The partisan hacks who give free passes should share in the blame.

Interesting question. I can’t imagine that Hillary will roll over and play dead where these appointments are concerned. If she wants to keep her Presidential hope intact, especially as a centralist, then she will have to pick and chose her fights, always under the guise of “what would Mr. Middleamerican do?” If she moves too far to the left, the red tide will wash her out to sea.

Bottom line is: Republicans still lost the house and the two Dem-challenged seats in Georgia.

Athens was redistricted out of GA-12, so I’m not sure why it should be less appealing to Republicans - they made the district more conservative.

GA-8 was closer than expected because Collins used to be the Congressman from GA-8 before he lost the Senate race and Westmoreland became GA-8 Congressman. After redistricting, the changed safe Westmoreland’s seat to GA-3 and gave Marshall GA-8, which caused confusion with former GA-8 Rep. Collins.

Hmm, I wonder why the GA GOP changed the district numbers like that…

Dusty, you are an idiot. Afghanistan is no more free today than five, ten, or 20 years ago. Today, terror falls from the skies via american bombs hitting villages where the people have themselves never been to an airport, let alone on an airplane. Bombs droped in the name of freedom and democracy kill just as effectively as bombs droped by Communist invaders. The Karma tail of america today is the longest of any person or nation in the history of the world, it is a tail of death and destruction of primitive peoples throughtout the world. I look forward to the day americans suffer in direct proportion to the misery and destruction they have caused throughout the world. I for one will neither lift a finger, nor offer a single ounce of my gold to mitigate that suffering.

Ok, OK - you shamed me into saying that SOMETHING was done in the last 12 years. Case in point:

Did you forget Afghanistan, no longer ruled by the Taliban (with problems, yes) but free?

Free to now become the biggest supplier of opium to the free world. Unfortunately those in charge, be they Military or Republicans, somehow forgot to plan for the post Afghanistan invasion.

Have you forgotten that we in the USA have not been attacked by terrorists? You didn’t notice that?

True. Point for Dusty

With your husband in the military, do you actually believe that we have done nothing in Iraq even with the great problems there? That Americans who lost their lives there did it for a worthless cause? That one less dictator in power is not good?

Dusty, Dusty, come on!!! Iraq is a MESS because of our invasion and now it’s a safe haven for every terrorist, religious zealot, ethnic cleanser, whacko, et al in the region!! Our invasion has made the whole region unsafe and therefore threatens the very oil that Dubya was fighting for!!! One less dictator gone, but now one big mess left behind. However, I will concede that I will never say that any soldier’s death is in vain. A soldier fights because they are told to fight and they do the job they’ve been given to do. That’s not in vain.

We all know these things no matter how you find fault with them. Can you honestly say that we are doing nothing but “putting a fence around Texas”?

Perhaps the Democrats will now banish every opium user in the free world and thus free Afghanistan. Did you want the Taliban to stay and get rid of opium, women’s rights, advanced education and any bid for a free country?

I guess the CIA and British Intelligence all said that Bush was not going to make oil money unless he dumped Saddam. So Bush and Congress went to war because of oil. That premise is pretty oily in itself with nothing to back it up. Not to mention that Bush is already wealthy and never caught in a crooked deal, no matter how long some may look.

Iraq is a mess with all of that criminal and terrorist element fighting there. Did you want them to fight HERE? I don’t.

I see Debbie needs a little assistance in finding what Marcus is referring to. Hey Deb, it’s just a lot easier to say liar! instead of looking things up, isn’t it? Here ya go sweetheart, try not to get so worked up over denying that which is true, otay?

The black-and-white ad features a victim’s-eye reenactment of the murder of James Byrd, Jr., who was dragged to death in Jasper, Tex., in 1998. As the camera looks up from the pavement end of steel chain dragging behind a pickup truck as it races down a lonely highway, the voice of Byrd’s daughter delivers this message:

I’m Renee Mullins, James Byrd’s daughter. On June 7, 1998, in Texas, my father was killed. He was beaten, chained and dragged three miles to his death, all because he was black. So when Gov. George W. Bush refused to support hatecrimes legislation, it was like my father was killed all over again. Call George W Bush and tell him to support hate-crimes legislation. We won’t get dragged away from our future.

What else are we supposed to insinuate from this message Deb, that people need to be aware of not leaving chains on the back bumpers of trucks? Oh no, I’ve got it: pickup trucks are popular in Texas. No, wait: that’s the NAACP insinuating to Ford and GM that they need to sell more pickup trucks to African-Americans. That’s it, isn’t it Little Debbie? Now I’ve done my good lib deed for the day.

Dear Diogenes @ 12:19, I think your core analysis is correct. But, as you note, Hillary cannot play dead either – the Moonbats would be highly forgiving, but there comes some point where they will demand their tribute. My forecast: she will lead the early fight against already-demonized John Bolton, but for the next few high-profile appointments will affirm something that she hopes will be self-serving, “the President deserves great leeway in appointing the members of his team.” 40% will vote against her no matter what she does; 35% or so will vote for her no matter what she does. She does not want to give too much incentive for the middle to fear her. And I do believe she is the kingmaker in the senate, unless/until deposed.

Dusty: Unlike the other ConServATrons on this blog I always appreciated your wit and your thought provoking posts. However, when you say:

“You do not reflect honor on your military husband. They are not robots and neither are the generals. They are fighting for us and the Iraqis. Sorry you can’t see it.”

I honestly think you have lost your mind. How can you, who have NEVER seen me nor know anything about me outside of this post possibly judge me? (I thought you were a Christian what happened to that “Judge ye not” Command?)

Once again let me break it down for you: just because I do not support the war, the president, the current administration, DOES NOT MEAN I DON’T SUPPORT THE TROOPS!!!

Soldiers aren’t robots but they are SOLDIERS by definition: a person who has enlisted with, or has been conscripted into, the armed forces of a sovereign country and has undergone training and received equipment to defend that country or its interests.

Their duty is towards the sovereign country, they MUST follow orders or be court-martialled and/or severely punished if they don’t.

The Soldiers in Iraq are not “fighting for us over there so that terrorists won’t come here”! Have u forgotten that when they went there in the first place there were no terrorists factions in Iraq?! None. Zip. Zero. Nada. No matter what Dubya and his minions told the American People. We have since learned that what they told us were LIES.

I think it’s admirable that you believe in something so totally and so whole that you’d put your heart and soul into the effort — a lot of people can learn from you on how to perservere.

However, when you believe in things that are not factually true, no matter how good the glow on those rose covered glasses are, what you’re looking at ain’t roses, they’re pricks.

Everybody on here should do a search on the internet for “GUIDING PRINCIPLES FOR U.S. POST-CONFLICT POLICY IN IRAQ” which was written by an independent working group, cosponsored by the Council on Foreign Relations and the James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy back in January of 2003. It reads like a point by point warning of everything that HAS gone wrong with our Iraq policy. It saddens me to know that there were people of good faith, who had thought out the issues and difficulties that would accompany the overthrow of Saddam Hussein, but were utterly and totally ignored by this President and his administration. Jim Wooten likes to tout his Republican party as being above reproach and without flaw, while tearing down the opposition, but he needs to take a hard look at how incompetent Republicans can be, in their quest to be right. Now they are calling on Jim Baker to fix it all. His group knew the pitfalls to avoid, but that doesn’t mean they know how to fix them after we’ve fallen in.

I hear everyone pitching a fit about Dem’s did this, Rep’s did that, who gives a rat’s hairy hind end? The fact is, each one of them, no matter what party they are from, has the potential to screw things up, and neither party has a particularly squeaky clean record. We as voters need to forget this party crap and look at each candidate on their own merit and decide who we want running our country. Both parties are screw ups and cover for their buddies.

Lets try electing someone (local, county, state and national levels) who’ll actually do the job and not just talk out of the side of his/her mouth.

There were not any “terrorists” in Iraq, just terror under Saddam Hussein.

WMDs was the reason we went to Iraq and it was verified by two countries intelligence agencies. So they were wrong (maybe). Did we know that? NO.

Do you want to fight terrorists there or here? They have said they want to kill Americans.

Your comment, “There were not any “terrorists” in Iraq, just terror under Saddam Hussein” seems a little far fetched. My most learned colleague Jbmlaw mourns the loss of Milton Friedman yesterday.

Friedman and the Chicago School are, to me, responsible for much of the corruption and immorality plaguing our society. (And please, Jbmlaw, know that I am not attempting to disrespect the dead or trash your hero unnecessarily, I just think Friedman’s passing is an invitation for debate).

The idea that the market will always dictate the best outcome is true enough if the market is one that performs perfectly and where each individual has access to the same information. Of course this is not the case in reality.

I have always subscribed to the Galbraith view of economics (surely not surprising to Jbm!) and I advocate the government playing an integral role in the realms of health care, defense, education, and law enforcement (including reducing corporate malfeasance).

I was raised and taught to believe in the essential goodness of Man and I think that Jbmlaw and I differ in our experiences like this: I place my trust in individuals making good group decisions (a la representative democracy) and that the higher the social interaction, the better for society as a whole. (I highly recommend the book Bowling Alone to anyone interested in these issues).

My friend Jbmlaw believes in the goodness of the individual and his or her ability to make the best decisions for him or herself. This certainly increases accountability, but I am not sure that it provides maximum opportunity for all and can tend to foment an aristocracy (without regulation ensuring access for all, the individual will by his very nature make a self-serving decision in most cases).

In any event, I hope everyone is looking forward to the weekend.

The “Get Schooled” blog said that APS superintendent talked to the editorial staff this week. Did you, as the conservative (least likely to fall into the trap of moral relativism) take the opportunity to ask about the falisified discipline data APS submitted? APS recently had the Morningside principal resign due to a falsified resume’. Given that, shouldn’t the APS officials who signed off on the obviously falisfied data also offer to resign (as well as any officials who knew that they were falsified)?

There is a clear moral and ethical choice here as a journalist. Did you do your duty as a member of the Fourth Estate and ask the questions that needed to be asked? If not, will you?

Dr. Friedman’s views have been corrupted by Government intervention in markets, and by government tax policy. Too much of what corporate america does is based on the easy money of the fed, and avoiding taxes. Dr. Friedman was correct to reject corporations making charatible contributions, since the money donated actually belongs to the shareholders, who should be making the decision to donate or not. Government tax policy favors corporate giving, perverting the role of the corporation as the passive property of the shareholder. Today, the hired help in the execution board room thinks they own the corporation, and are and have been looting the business, stealing from the shareholders. Take Coca Cola for instance, when Mr G was chairman, the stock price increased yearly, and Mr G extracted more than 1 billion dollars in executive compensation for him self. Did he build a stronger company, and thus deserve this wealth transfer from shareholders, or was the stock prices rise the result of the easy money fed, and asset inflation? I would argue the company was not made stronger, as the stock price collapse of recent years has shown. Rather, it was external financial conditions that lead to the regular stock price increases at coca cola. The same with almost all other american corporations, as they have all benefited from asset inflation, aka the ownership society. Yet the hired help has enriched themselves unjustly, counter to Mr. Friedman’s teachings.

On the death of Ronald Reagan, whom he advised, Mr. Friedman wrote on these pages that “few people in human history have contributed more to the achievement of human freedom.” The same can and long will be said of Milton Friedman. WSJ Editorial.

Can the Democrats spend the next two years showing a moderate, centrist, mature face to the country? Republicans say—this is the big phrase—“It’s not in their DNA.” But betting on the other guy’s inability to change is not, really, a plan. And these Democrats, or many of them, seem a rising generation of pragmatists. They seem to know what’s at stake. If they scare America, they give Republicans a ready campaign theme for 2008: If you liked the crazy Democratic Congress, you’ll love a crazy Democratic White House. Peggy Noonan

Quoth Reid: ” It’s political leaders like Congressman Boehner and Donald Rumsfeld, who have failed. I expect President Bush and Congressional Republicans, who demanded John Kerry apologize, hold their own party’s majority leader to a much higher standard.”

Quoth Emanuel: “President Bush used to say that he would listen to the generals. Today, he says he’s happy to listen to Secretary Rumsfeld while his lieutenant in Congress, John Boehner blames the generals on the ground for the chaos in Iraq.”

Quoth Dean: “After the Bush Administration’s numerous failures in Iraq, to blame our brave troops is just wrong. John Boehner should apologize immediately.”

I am shocked by the postings on this blog. It would be advised that most of the writers actually read a history book or two before they make themselves look like such idiots. The scary thing is that someone will read this stuff and believe it as fact. This blog exposes why American Politics has been dysfunctional for many years. Blind allegiance to any party regardless of their position is what can destroy our system of government. True conservatives would have never stood for what the Republicans and President Bush have done over the last 6 years. The Republican Party now has become deficit spenders with no true fiscal conservative agenda.

Filled with comments about republicans doing the same thing the dems have been doing for ever and not reported in the press. Two, If this was a message to the Bush Administration about the war, I am convinced the press and the dems have put forward the agenda that there is no war (global) and the Iraq is not a front on the war. Well, I guess a suicide bomber has to blow up a train or a cafe or a school here in the US before they will believe we are at war. We are at war, wake up.

If they had limited spending, if they had not blundered into the Medicare prescription plan, had they not tried to out-democrat the democrats, things may have turned out different.

If, on immigration, they had offered a temporary work permit for the illegals already here, with out a path to citizenship - that would be done the old fashion way, and taken a real stand for border control, things may have turned out different.

If they had listened to the conservative base, I wonder how things would have turned out.

Dear TS @ 11:13, welcome to the blog, you are obviously new to this site. Most of your critique is valid, but you lack the historical perspective. And not all of the Democrats who write on this blog are unreasoning or profligate spenders. Suggest you examine the work of my friends Southern Democrat and MidSouth Philosopher for intelligent voices of opposition.

We have discussed it frequently, but this blog has a couple of threads every day, one with an above-average point/counterpoint argument, and the other with an exchange of epithets and trash talk. Your side is still asking for reparations that you claim are owed you since before the Civl War

Danish Cow: Which side is that?

Van: It should read “United States” this was said according to Laurence J. Kotlikoff, professor of economics at Boston U.

Constitutional rights being taken away by the Bush Administration: Read the Graham Ammendment, The right to face your accuser and a right to a speedy trial, (In the weeks after September 11th, hundreds of individuals were rounded up as suspected terrorists, they were held without criminal charges, and often with no access to an attorney), domestic wiretaps without benefit of first requiring a court order, etc. this list goes on.

Hot Pockets,

The only flag I salute is the American Flag. That being said, if we had lost the Revolutionary War, would Betsy Ross be a traitor?

I’m curious also - what’s your position on burning the American Flag. Free speech or something which should be outlawed?

DebbieDoRight,

That would be the side of never-ending grievances.

Debbie sayeth: […states slowly going bankrupt].

Yeah, like New Jersey and other states that continue to tax the bajeezus out of it’s residents and spend the loot on local social policies by their Dem leaders. Housing in New York, New Jersey, and Massachussetts has become almost impossibly expensive. People are sick of it and packing up and hoofing it to other areas, especially in the south. Florida doesn’t even have a state income tax and its books are just fine. Here’s to hoping the Dembulbs get their wish of raising taxes of the successful and working American people during the next two years. If they do, it will be the fastest two years they ever heard of.

Excerpts from OJ’s new book, How I kilt Nicole: “I knew that you cant commit that murder without being covered in blood, so I donned a pair of seldom used gloves and a plastic cover-all (shower curtain with hole for head)”

That would explain the reason why the footprints doubled back from the exit gate to the bodies at the murder scene. He saw that he needed to return to the bloody area to start removing the coverall. That would explain why he left one glove: he was removing the coverall and it just got away from him. . He forgot to take off his other glove, however, and that’s explains all the blood in the exterior door handle area and the interior of the Bronco. Oj stashed the bundle of shower curtain and knife and a possible outer layer of clothing in a luggage bag and put it up on the roof of his home in a crevice. That explains how the other glove fell off there, he slipped in his bloody shoes climbing the fence and air conditioner to hoist himself on the roof there, unseen. That explains the noise and vibration that his homie heard and felt. OJ crashing down onto the air conditioner somehow. He returned to dispose of the evidence LONG after the murders, when he sensed an opportunity to do so.

time for truthless fairies, I needed to know your heritage as I need a new lamp shade, and you were the first one I thought of, to bad you don’t qualify. However, my hogs are hungry, and you would qualify as a high fat, minimal protein meal for the beasts.
