Women, men and politics
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Gov. Sonny Perdue’s lead over Lt. Gov. Mark Taylor is 19 points, 53 to 34 percent, according to an AJC-commissioned poll by Mason-Dixon Polling and Research. Perdue led in all parts of the state, drawing support of 58 percent of men and 49 percent of women, while Taylor pulls 31 percent of men and 38 percent of women. About 11 percent said they were undecided and 2 percent favored the libertarian, Garrett Hayes.
The surprise to me is that Taylor is not running stronger among women. Black women are cinch Democrats and the fact that even with their loyalty, he still pulls no more than 38 percent of the female vote is telling. I haven’t quite put my finger on it, but Taylor has some version of Richard Nixon’s five o’clock shadow. Something he projects does not appeal to women. I suspect that it’s his size, which women either find intimidating or see as a lack of discipline. I didn’t see anything in his race against Cathy Cox that would create the impression that he’s a bully — the real danger when a guy his size runs against a woman people like. It may simply be that he’s now beaten two women in statewide campaigns who are popular among Democratic women — State Rep. Mary Margaret Oliver of Decatur for lieutenant governor and now Cox — and they hold it against him. Whatever it is, time’s running out.
This is a campaign season where the war on terror, pro and con, has sucked the life out of every other issue. Immigration was hot. Health care had potential. Energy had its moment as a campaign issue. The deficit and pork-barrel spending ignited the fiscal conservatives for months. But nationally it’s the war. And in the state, it’s likeability.
The question, though, is whether beyond a visceral sense of comfort with certain candidates, men and women are drawn to candidates for different reasons. Democratic women talk of the “women’s vote” as though its monolithic, which of course it’s not. By “women’s vote,” they mean issues associated with liberal Democrats, like abortion and expanded social services. (The debate on this blog, incidentally, doesn’t reflect any gender differences on issues that I can pick up.)
Questions: Do men and women see government and politicians differently? Or should that be: do single and married men/women see them differently? And what are the vibes that men and women candidates send out that attract us or turn us off? Do looks matter? Katherine Harris, the Republican nominee for the U.S. Senate in Florida, who is attractive, has been criticized for coming across as too flirtatious in some TV interviews. Would we think that of Janet Reno?

As ugly as Mark Taylor is, he’s not nearly as ugly as the moon-faced redneck “Sonny”. Sooey Sonny doesn’t look like someone who backs away from the table often either. And Georgia women loved voting for the ugly hillbilly Zig-Zag Zellster, so go figure.
Most Georgia gals are rednecks, and vote no different from their redneck hubbies, since they are often blood kin besides…
Anyhow, this column today shows your usual level of substantive thinking, or lack thereof.

Good morning, Jim,
We are treading on “dangerous” ground with this topic, but, at the risk of stepping on a “social landmine,” I suspect that part answer may be in Taylor’s family troubles. Albeit, his son is grown (at least in size), there is a perception among some voters (a large percentage being female) that a politician who cannot manage the behavior of his own children cannot be trusted to take care of the rest of us.
Even Reagan was criticized about his conflicts with his daughter Patti. And has anyone heard or seen anything out of “Georgie” Bush’s cherubs, Barbara and Jenna lately?
Despite the advances in society of the role of the post-modern woman (most all of which I am in favor of), I believe there is still a “mothering” or “nurturing” element in the psyche of most females.

Good morning, all. Odd questions today. I prefer to think that people would not exercise political judgments based on mere appearances, but I suspect the questions correct infer that we do.
I think everyone agrees that Condi Rice is the closest thing the Republicans have to a superstar, one who could have the Republican presidential nomination in 2008 without a serious bloodletting; could she get that nomination if she weighed 300 pounds? The fact that she is physically attractive is probably relevant. But that did not appreciably help Ralph Reed, did it? I always heard that the first rule of politics is that one is unlikely to be elected if one’s being frightens small children (that’s why our leftists do not have to worry about me running for office.) I think the physical appearance can have a negative effect, but not a positive one on a candidacy. That said, perhaps good looks affected the 1960 and 1976 elections, but those are exceptional. I don’t think there are any correlations to party or marital status in exercise of the rule.

There will always be a minority of folks that will vote for the better looking candidate. That is the extent of their abilities.
Look back at the campaign of 1992, Ross Perot gathered 19% of the vote, he was not that good looking. He lost out to Bubba Clinton, a stand in for the Michelin man.

Let’s face it - the reason Georgians elected “Sonny” Perdue was because “Junior” Samples was dead.
Maybe Mark Taylor should get him a redneck nickname, like Bubba or Big Belly. “The Big Guy” sounds too Yankee.

AJC is Filthy thinks I’m a racist because Georgia mountain folks are ugly idiots?
that is NOT what he said rednekkks vermin!!
“Mountain folk” is not a race, clown. The genetic deformities and abnormalities found in the Georgia mountain population are tragic and disgusting, but in no way should mountian folk be considered a separate race. In fact, there are a sizable number of mountain folks that have Native American and African genes. After all mountain women, indeed southern women in general are world reknowned for their fairly indiscriminate mating behavior.
Trash culture begets trash people, to be sure, but not a trash race, per se
I SEE REDNECKS NAMBLA HAS BEEN UP LATE AGAIN - busy with its obsessive, bilious hatred of southerners

It amazes me when righties tout Rice as presidential material. Tell me jbmlaw, you know how important winning the south is to winning the presidency. Do you really think the good ole boys in the south, those that go hunting every week with their hunting buddies, or those older, hard core southerners that are so important to winning the south, do you REALLY think they are going to vote for - not only a woman but a black woman? Think about it. When the voting curtain closes, do you really think they are going to vote for a black woman? She’s definitely a smart one. But I think it’s hilarious to think she could win a nationwide race.

“Something [gubernatorial candidate Mark Taylor] projects does not appeal to women. I suspect that it’s his size, which women either find intimidating or see as a lack of discipline.”
Wooten’s assessment of Taylor’s lack of appeal to women seems condescending. Apparently he believes that the large majority of women vote, not on issues, but on whether they could see themselves going on a date with the candidate. There’s no doubt that some women vote based on appearance, but there’s also no doubt that as many men vote on appearance or similar irrelevant factors as well.
Taylor is loosing because his advertisements suck, he hasn’t fought to highlight the differences (such as a debate) and he’s making no attempt to explain his position on the issues.
Taylor advertises a sales tax cut on medicine, but Sonny outdid him with his income tax cut for seniors (Republicans will always beat the Democrats on tax cuts since their wallets are, in fact, their sole concern). Cutting regressive sales taxes is an excellent idea while cutting progressive income taxes is an awful idea. Unfortunately, most voters don’t know the difference and even prefer regressive sales taxes – death by a thousand cuts – a less painful way to go.
Taylor runs ads about Sonny’s bad education record; Sonny runs ads about his great education record. Both candidates give the appearance of benefiting financially from their positions in State government.
Hell, I might vote for Sonny myself, despite my distaste for his policies. Gotta love those SonnyDo commercials.

Dear CJ @ 9:00, only those who reject Adam Smith proposition in “Wealth of Nations” would prefer your “progessive” tax over a “regressive” one.
All income is used one of two ways, as consumption or as savings. The income tax does not distinguish use, and thus constitutes a tax on savings and a dimunition of national wealth. In contrast, a tax on consumption does not penalize wealth; indeed, it gives the individual some control over the amount of tax he wishes to pay.

Well, last night at the trailer me and the missus was talking politics, and the guvner’s race came up. The minute I mentioned Mark Taylor, the little woman went storming all over the trailer, screaming that I better not vote for him because … she didn’t know why, except he is a librul. And you ain’t seen storming until a 325 lb. woman does it. I was awful glad I put in those extra 2 x 10s under the trailer floor.
Well, I got up and went outside to pertek myself, cause the last time she went off like that I got it on top the head with a big frying pan, and I hadn’t done nothing.
I suspicion that the reason women don’t like Mark Taylor is cause he reminds them of their oily, slick older brother. While Sonny reminds them of a favorite old drunk uncle. In a contest like that, the uncle wins every time, even if he’s a prevert.
Anyway, Sonny has my vote. I forgive him for the big tax increase on Beech Nut and Skoal. And I guess I’ll take the little woman out for the first time in a few months so she can vote for Sonny. We may even stop at Wal-Mart on the way back. Taylor sounds good when he talks about putting the juice to 2nd-time child preverts, but he’s just a librul and race-mixer. And we don’t want Those People getting uppity. Next thing you know, they’ll be showing up at Billy Bob’s and ruining all the fun.

rednekkks NAMBLA is still insanely obsessed with its venomous hatred of people who have done it no wrong. clearly the resident demented retard rednekkks has taken over a thousand viewings of its stolen video copy of Deliverance way too personally. doing this has eaten away at its already loose grip on reality.

if anyone here posted even occasionally about blacks the way you do southern whites there’d be a serious consideration of race hate charges. if anyone systematically posted in the same way you do about southern whites the way you do about yankees there’d also be a serious consideration of charges for bigotry.
Jim would rightfully ban anyone of us that continuously posted such disgusting lies and bigoted hatred about blacks or even yankees.

Jim: O.K., O.K., true confessions from a female voter. Pronounced overbites in politicians. While they may draw my eye, they don’t draw my mind.
Rudy Giuliani w/overbite - Straight-forward Conservative, but liberal on social issues.
Bill Clinton w/overbite - Nuanced, Wishy-washy Liberal.
John Edwards w/overbite - Charming, Wishy-washy Liberal.
The “Little Boyish Look”?
Which overbite would I vote for? Giuliani. Why? He hides nothing. Straight-forward approach is something I admire.
I’m appreciating a new commercial on T.V. where a little 8 year bold encounters his mother perplexed. He asks “What’s wrong?” The mother replies. “I’d like a new floor, but I don’t know how to tell your Dad.” The little boy looking confused, yells to his Dad upstairs, “Dad, Mom wants a new floor.” Looks back at the mom and shrugs.
I think Sonny’s appeal is because he succumbs to a “Sonny-do-list” and then does what needs to be done.

The Perdue/Taylor one is easy; both are middle Georgia, good-government moderates. Perdue saw he was not in line to be Governor and switched parties. Why vote against him? He is not trying to reduce government, just make it work well; and his social agenda is pretty weak soup compared to most Republicans in the state government. He is not threatening to most. Many Georgia women are tuned into school teacher issues (they are teachers or friends with teachers) and Perdue did away with the accountability for teachers passed by Barnes and pays lip service to the class size parts of Barnes’ education initiatives. There is just not enough reason to change.

Good looking is in the eye of the beholder. Remember when everyone first said Dan Quayle looked like Robert Redford? Not… Condi has the money and means to fix the gap between her teeth and chooses not to - why? It couldn’t hurt. Hillary has difficulty with daily grooming to be ready for all TV and press - some days she looks good, others she looks like she forgot her hair and make up people - oh, she doesn’t get those now that she isn’t first lady. Yeah, looks but most of all “grooming” count for both men and women. Cathy Cox was perfectly dressed and coiffed, it didn’t get her elected. But if she had not been, she wouldn’t even have been close. And neither Sonny or Mark would be considered handsome men. In the end looks and grooming count but the bottom line for voting should be their policies, stances, and record.

Taylor is a very fat ugly glib barsteward who is repelling (particularly women) voters, not just by his very distinctive sweaty physical appearance but by his behaviour. That seems to be the undeniable essence of his mounting problems.
There is clearly an element in politics, rarely articulated that can be summarised thus - “do we really want this person in our livings rooms/on TV etc night afer night for four years, and is this someone we can stomach making very important decisions for us for four long years - let alone eight years”. This obviously plays a small part in the average ‘normal’ candidate election - where its a much more pressing issue is in the case of (being very polite here) border line ’ nice’, like Kerry, the AlBore, Taylor, Cleland and so on. Obviously if there are sufficient partisan votes for either party in a given state heavily liberal state then the “physical appeal” or mental stability of a candidate is less of an issue, e.g. Dean in Vermontm but clearly becomes much more important in the presidential primaries.
But as Georgia has at long last outright rejected demoNcrats in the governors mansion after 130 years or so and the state legislature has similarly rejected the face of corrupt evil snouts in the trough liberalism and the GOP has emerged as the chosen party of the people demoNcrats should take note and not push odious candidates on the folks.
BUT MANY THANKS FOR DOING IT THIS TIME!!

I thought Cathy Cox would have made a terrific governor, not because she’s female, but because she has class, common sense, keen intelligence, a good work ethic, and a genuine desire to make government work more efficiently and effectively. But this is Georgia, so I need to shut my mouth and get my lil’ ol’ girlie self back into the kitchen where I belong, ‘less’n it’s my day to take to the streets to protest evolution in science class.

Realist,
Since Congressman Foley did do the right thing and resigned and with the bile of the Democrats showing against gays in Congress, do you think it might influence the other gays in Congress to do the right thing?
Will this outrage against Foley mean the Democrats are going to take a serious look at gays and teenagers?
I am glad the Democrats are taking a law and order view and upholding traditional family values.

This is not the Republican party I grew up with that supported Goldwater and Nixon. Who are these people!
Jax, you’re right. The principles behind the label have certainly changed! HBO is showing a documentary on Goldwater. VERY interesting! I’d vote for a “Republican” like that, but there aren’t any more. BTW, Goldwater hated Nixon. The current crop of R’s began taking root when they decided they must get even for Nixon resigning in shame. (Hence the 3-year, $70 mil investigation of a sitting Prez that netted only a denial of something gentlemen deny.) They traded their core values for a power trip a long time ago. Now they’re covering up for pedophiles while waving the family-values banner. Sad.

All this talk about gay males in the gop has me wondering about something: when a republican is caught doing something wrong, he steps down and his colleagues let him go. When a democrat gets caught, he blames it on the gop right wing consipiracy while fellow democrats circle their wagons. It’s not like Foley committed manslaughter by leaving an intern to drown or anything. Besdides, how many lefties complain about the aclu-protected nambla anyway?

Sonny’s handlers knew that if the race between him and Taylor became close that he would need the female vote to help him over the top. Mark Taylor is running a horrible campaign but he would have helped himself more if he had shed some weight. He took terrible advice if someone told him to call attention to his weight and run as “the big guy”. When obese people refer to themselves as “big” most people hear “big and fat” and that’s just the way it is.
Katherine Harris looks and acts like a cartoon character. She is overly madeup and fresh out of plastic surgery. The big fake teeth make her look like a wax figure. Not at all attractive.

fish head, This really isnt a partisan issue. It is widely known that there are queers in congress on both sides of the isle. Im just glad to see the democrats finally make a public stand against it and voice thier intolerance over this shameful behavior. The queers need to learn thier place and stay out of our government!!
The democratic party might stand to lose some votes over taking this outwardly harsh stance against homos, but hey, thats a small price to pay to have righteousness and God on your side!! Yay for the democrats for coming to thier senses!!

This Jax guy must live in a cave. Us rednecks have been the heart and soul of the Republican party in Georgia for more than 20 years. Ever since we learnt Jimmy Carter was a librul. When we thought we was electing a good old boy like us.
I know TFTT, Realist and Markus are sure proud to have people like me voting with them. I guess they must be rednecks theirselfs.
I don’t know why Realist is so mad at this Foley fellow. If he thinks that’s bad, he should see some of the stuff that goes on up here in north Georgia in the trailers.
Anyway, Sonny will put Foley on his Sonny-do list and that will take care of him. And I sure do wish I could sidle up to the missus, like Sonny, and say, sort of casual-like, something like “You know, Jim Earl is taking on airs with his word book and all. Don’t you worry about him, though. I’m going to put him on my Redneck-do list.”
But I guess I’ll just have to keep my distance. Sonny’s lucky he has a wife he can turn into a campaign ad just by turning a camera on in the kitchen in the morning. But for me, you never know when that woman of mine will turn mean as a wounded bear. Anyway, she’s back at the feeding trough again after she got mad about Mark Taylor. It will be back to 370 lbs. in another week.

Mark Taylor comes accross less than honest. I can’t say I particularly like all of Sonny’s politics, however, after having the opportunity to meet him, I have to say he at least projects the ability to be sincere. To have a politician listen, respond, and then, actually respond to an email follow up - well, he gained some credibility with me. I don’t believe that Mark Taylor has what it takes to govern the state. I see him making promises that I do not believe he can keep, and I do not believe he completely grasps the implications of those promises. Cathy Cox does, in my opinion, however we won’t get to see that in action.
I am not happy to see that once again, women are lumped together here and somehow viewed as second class. Is there a possibility that women retain a “motherly, nurturing” side that shows when we vote? Well, probably. Is there a bravadura, a macho/protective side to men when they vote? Probably. Does it ultimately have that big an impact on the vote? Um, that would be a no. At least not for an intelligent voter, which, btw, quite a few women are. I can’t believe all of you wonderful specimen’s of virility married stupid women, did you think only YOUR wives were bright enough to make decisions?
TFTT - What the heck is NAMBLA?
And once again - meetings beckon so I’ll be back later. Oh - Happy Monday all…

Realist, I too am disappointed in the Foley situation. The Republican party sure didn’t need that right now.
As for the Sonny vs. Taylor and women voters, I personally don’t see much difference in their physical appearances, so that’s not really an issue in this race. For me it’s more about what they are going to do for us. Unfortunately we’re so polarized right now that each candidate is going to cater mostly to their party. When Mark Taylor said he’d put 2nd time child offenders to death, I thought “well, I just might vote for him if he does that!”, but shortly thereafter I realized that the Dems are never going to let that happen and it is just political jockeying.

NAMBLA is the real face of the far left democratic party’ it stands for North Amercan Boy Love Association … and the ACLU is literally currently defending one of their members and the organisation whose official web site helped provide info that led to the rape and murder of a young boy in Mass. the ACLU considers NAMBLA’s right to free speech which consists of “teaching” sickos how to have sex with boys something every American should have the right to have access to.

Talon News,
This actually point out a difference between Republicans and Democrats.
With the right, it is okay to be gay as long as you are discreet and stay within the law.
On the other hand, the left celebrates being gay and makes being gay a resume enhancer. If you should break the law, like running a gay bordelo out of your apartment, you are then protected because you’re gay.

TFTT, I really think this NAMBLA and predator problem could be solved with a little help from the general public. I saw how easy it was on Dateline NBC to go on the computer and pose as 13 year old boy and have these pervs come to your home. That gave me a great idea. All the bubbas and rednecks and young guys who like to raise hell on the weekends, could set up this little “sting” and pose as a kid, but when the perv shows up, instead of a 13 year old boy, he gets a good old fashioned nose breaking beatdown!! jbmlaw @9:16 “…all for ourselves, and nothing for other people, seems, in every age of the world, to have been the vile maxim of the masters of mankind.” – Adam Smith in “The Wealth of Nations” jbmlaw – If you’re going to use the “Wealth of Nations” to rationalize your shameless greed, then perhaps you should read it first. You were mistaken when you wrote that progressive taxes (income tax) constitute a tax on savings. Not preferring savings (i.e. investment) over consumption is not the same as taxing savings. The economy needs both investment and consumption like I need both my right and left legs. By condoning a tax system that favors investment entirely, you favor a tax system for the rich over one that supports the middle class and poor – money wasters who blow all or most of their wads on such frivolities as shelter, transportation, food, child care and health care.
On the other hand, you were correct when you wrote that a tax on consumption (regressive sales taxes) doesn’t penalize wealth. Taxes on consumption penalizes poverty and expedites the shrinking of the middle class.

It sure seems to me that getamaggotbrain, along with rednekkks NAMBLA are the two main NAMBLA types on here. They are utterly obsessed with the Foley situation.
I agree with instigating the selfless suggested sting operation - the only thing though, is given the huge sadly rising poof population in metro Atlanta there may be far more broken noses than any local hospital - even crack pipe/meth addict/drive by shooting victim Grady can handle. The other thing is that such a vigilante sting will also always bring out obsessive cyber leftist sickos like we have on here - thus it might get to the point where the brave bubbas defending kids in their communities would need to invoke rather more drastic self defence tactics than mere fisticuffs. Happily lawful gun ownership tends to be higher amongst law abiding GOP types than effete lefties.

No, I have a son so I suppose I was applying my personal situation and emotions to the topic. “I suspect that it’s his size, which women either find intimidating or see as a lack of discipline.”
Sexist much, Mr. Wooten? As a woman, I couldn’t possibly care less about Taylor’s size: I am interested only in his effectiveness and his platform, and it’s the latter that I have a problem with. Despite what you may think about my pretty little head, I’m focused on the issues, not on how many Big Macs the guy has eaten.
Taylor wants to make it a criminal offense to sell M-rated video games to those who are younger than 17. This is the best he can come up with as a campaign plank? Speaking tactically, that issue hasn’t played well for either Lieberman or H. Clinton, so I’m really surprised that his political team can’t generate something more relevant to Georgia voters.
For this independent female voter, it’s about the size of the issues, not the size of the candidate. Unfortunately, I think either option is a lousy choice. Yet another “lesser of two evils” election.
However, I’ll likely hold my nose and vote for Taylor because he offends me less than Perdue does.
