Middle East, spelling bee, Carter’s plan
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
T hinking Right’s free-for-all Friday. Pick a topic:
• A U.N. peacekeeping force in Southern Lebanon is to peacekeeping as a canary is to mine safety. Both indicate when conditions aren’t safe, but neither actually does anything to alleviate the problem.
• Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert says the cease-fire, with a call for 15.000 U.N. peacekeepers, is a major diplomatic success. It was, too. Just not for Israel. His ministering time draws nigh.
• GOP legislators are squeezing the Georgia High School Athletic Association to set rules for athletic practices in hot, humid weather. A difference between liberal and conservative legislators is that conservatives legislate as a last resort, while liberals legislate because they believe nobody else has good sense. School officials do.
• No bigger home-schooling fan exists in the media, but when an 8-year-old wins a spelling bee by correctly spelling the word “mail,” there’s the c-l-u-e that the competition’s not t-u-f-f enough.
• The Bush administration urges the U.S. Supreme Court to end the practice of drawing school attendance boundaries to achieve an arbitrary racial mix. The practice, employed by a thousand districts nationwide, should be halted. Schools desperately need to get back to the job they do best — academics — and leave the social engineering to parents. And to Hollywood, of course.
• John Mark Karr is to the JonBenet murder what Al Gore is to the Internet. They didn’t do it. Thought they did, but they didn’t.
• Think the bad guys don’t read American politics? Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad challenges President Bush to a televised debate on world issues. Now where do you suppose he’d get the idea that he’s smarter than Bush? The American left, of course.
• U.S. Sen. Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) gives the party of fiscal conservatives a bad name — not that he or a number of others in the party are actual fiscal conservatives. His previously secret “hold” on legislation to create a searchable database on the $2.5 trillion in government contracts, grants, loans and other financial information, has been outed. Go home, Ted. Quit. Go.
• How can Americans — any and all Americans — delude themselves into believing they’re not better off here than they would be anywhere else in the world? In Cuba, 300,000 families are getting new Chinese-made refrigerators. “Actually, they’re quite expensive,” said one purchaser. “I’m paying the equivalent of $286. My wife and I make about $25 a month. So, like most people, we’re financing it over a 10-year period at 10 percent interest.” Another, 42, said, “This is the first time I see a brand- new fridge.”
• Welfare reform’s lesson is immigration’s. Its success came because it sent a clear, unmistakable message: You’re expected to work and to move off the dole. The message, combined with a few incentives, changed expectations — and behaviors.
• A “grim milestone,” it’s called. And it is. American military losses in Iraq and Afghanistan will soon surpass the death toll in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attack, and next month combat operations in Iraq will pass the length of time U.S. forces fought in Europe in World War II. The temptation is to ask: And this proves what? World War II veterans of the 4th Marine Division gathered here last weekend. One of their battles was Iwo Jima. Some perspective: 2,972 died on Sept. 11. In Iraq and Afghanistan, 2,941. In less than a month on Iwo Jima, 6,891.
• I’m not into golf, but even I can appreciate the dream foursome that celebrity golfer Buck Lanford, a Fox 5 sports anchor, would assemble: Bobby Jones, Ronald Reagan and his 3-year-old son, Will. Throw in Furman Bisher for conversation and I’d caddy.
• Have the Michael Moore-Howard Dean Democrats done a party swap-out with Mexico? Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, the defeated presidential candidate in Mexico, urges fellow citizens not to recognize the winner and vows to create a parallel leftist government in the streets.
• Jimmy Carter agrees to host a meeting with former Iranian President Mohammad Khatami. Stand by for a joint statement condemning the Bush administration.
• OK, I can’t have the IKEA PR pro. Or the Atlantic Station spin-sters. But can’t I just borrow the Seeger’s restaurant promoter for a few hours? He/she’s real good.

Good morning, Jim,
This is bad of me…very, very bad…but I can’t resist.
Should we have a debate between “Georgie” Bush and Mahmoud “Schicklgruber” Ahmadinejad?
ONLY, IF THEY BOTH LEARN TO SPEAK ENGLISH!
I told you this was bad.
Have a great weekend, all.

Hey Jim, if you don’t care about the 2,941 who died in Iraq and Afghanistan (the number isn’t big enough for you to care), then why do you care about the 2,972 who died on September 11?
Isn’t that to small a number to blow your nose with?

Any signed peace treaty with Hezbollah isn’t fit to line a canary cage with.
Funny how Karr sang like a canary, then cried like a wolf. That’s the difference between conservative and liberal bloggers. Wooten immediately exonerated the Ramsey family. My wife smelled that lunatic Karr a mile away. The real story here is that child porn sells. Karnal Kiddies bumped Caliph Carnage to page three. We made a wrong turn somewhere, and now we’ve the devil to pay.
Alaska’s Senator Stevens sounds like he could sell Chinese Refrigerators to his state’s Eskimos. Dont think the Chinese are conservation minded? Their fridges use little electricity, and you can only flush 1.6 eggrolls down their toilets.
Bush should challenge Amadinejad to a Texas Barbecue Contest. The sauce with the least amount of curried goat meat wins!!
Without the racial gerrymandering of school districts, how would any of us know how to spell “ho”? Be thankful that no conservative vice-president attending that home-schooled spelling bee was asked to spell “potatoe”. If anything, Amadinejad should challenge you know who to a spell-off.
The Grim Milestone proves that without a proper alignment of a country’s ideological mission with a clear geo-political mission, then their army’s strategic mission becomes vague and can morph to Machiavellian Spin. (do I win the spelling bee?)

Jim - you’re pathetic. Obviously, since I don’t kiss your @ss like your other puppets on here, you had me banned from posting. I tried this post 4 times using my regular name. How sad it must be for you to have anyone disagree with poor little jim.
Hey Jim – you mentioned that Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad challenged President Bush to a televised debate on world issues. Then you asked where he’d gotten the idea that he’s smarter than Bush? You answered: the American left, of course.
No – the true answer is he’s watched him! Anybody can tell that Bush is the dumbest President the U.S. has had in several decades. His IQ is lower than Quayle’s (and that’s pretty bad). It doesn’t take a genius to discover Bush is stupid. I hope he takes the debate and falls flat on his face. When Bush talks from a speech – he’s okay, because someone else wrote it. However, when he ad libs – my God! What an idiot!
Don’t blame “the left” for the world knowing Bush is an idiot. It’s just common sense.
By the way – I hope Jimmy Carter does condemn the Bush Administration. Carter has done more for the well-being of the world than any other person (save Jesus) in history and he knows how Bush sends troops to kill innocent people (and get U.S. soldiers killed).
By the way, Jim, I see how you’re downplaying the 2,941 people who died in Iraq and Afghanistan as people who don’t matter. Unless the number gets real big it doesn’t rate with you and I can tell those people aren’t important to you. But, they are/were important to the families they left behind when they were sent to die for no reason.

May I apologize for the crudeness of the 8:16 and the 8:20 comments? Sir, Miller Time is at least four hours away. You forgot to watch out for the bull. (the schlitz malt liquor bull). Conservatives legislating as a last resort about had Cheerios coming out my nose. Notice how “local control” went out the window when the Republicans took over the federal government?
Al Gore did not say he invented the internet, but Newt did say about Gore,” In all fairness, it’s something Gore had worked on a long time. Gore is not the Father of the Internet, but in all fairness, Gore is the person who, in the Congress, most systematically worked to make sure that we got to an Internet.” Credit where credit is due.

President Bush would win the debate hands-down. All he’d have to do is what he does with new staff members—tell Ahmadinejad, “Pull my finger,” then cut loose. That towel-head would be so grossed out he’d head for the airport right quick. It’s the redneck way. You don’t win a debate by being smart. So conservatives legislate as a last resort and liberals legislate because they think nobody else has good sense? Wooten then says school officials do have good sense. Then why are the GOP meddling in on the High School Association if they have good sense? And of course Wooten has to bring up the same old Al Gore - Internet nonesense. He knows exactly what Al Gore meant when he talked about the internet - that he was instrumental in continually pushing for the funding in the early development of the internet. What person in their right mind would actually believe that Al Gore really meant that he actually invented the internet? He was talking about the funding and people like Wooten know that. Of course, the “liberal” media ran with it like the wind. Pathetic.

While I am of the opinion that George Bush’s performance is only slightly more effective than that of James Buchanan, the last person we need to try to deal with the “Persian Menace” is Jimmy Carter. I remember the fiasco of 1979.
While former President Carter’s outstanding service to humanity since his time in office is unparalleled in the annals of former Presidents, he is not the man to deal with this issue.

Its a veritable smorgasbord for those studying dysgenics and the everyday effects of mutation in pinko Bush hating appeasers.
Where is McKinney? Hanging out in Cuba for that final early retirement payoff in expensive fridges? Taking a refresher course in virulent anti-semitism in Tehran? Studying to become one of Calypso Louis Farrakhan’s polygamous white devil hating wives? NOPE - she’s out on the zoological interview circuit hoping to get a long term gig living with the primates where she will finally be able to relax, let her funny hair go and be herself without need for thuggish Black Mohammedan bodyguards!!

I have to agree with the earlier post about our school officials. The amount of crowing done over the fact that 4 states dropped in SAT performances so badly that we are now 46th instead of 50th shows an astonishing lack of judgment. And the only reason we are that high is the new writing section. Overall, the scores for the state dropped. Officials who think this is good news and evidence of progress, Sonny included, should be removed from office. And if GHSA officials had such good sense, why did it take another death for them to even consider rules? Why do they have to be pressured by anybody to come up with some reasonable rules?

Well I see TFTT has come out of her hangover. Her life is so pathetically sad that as soon as she enters the blog she starts insulting and condemning everybody.
Sounds like TFTT needs a little love (unfortunately she’s so ugly that she can only get her dog to hump her - and that’s only when she puts a steak around her neck). Maybe if she got out of the house once in a while and enjoyed the real world and some fresh air (instead of the odor from all the cat pee in her house left from the 100 cats she keeps) she might lighten up.
Alas, she is destined to always be a nasty, vile, self-loathing excrement of human existance. And she probably wonders why this blog is her only interaction with other people. Sad case, really.
By the way, TFTT, if the 1 after my name really is my IQ, it still puts me 1 ahead of you.

Chazman, The web as we know it today might have been a little different if left in the hands of private enterprise.
After starting out as a network between research universities and the military, it expanded. By the early 80’s it was widely used by many businesses and individules.
While the web today is great and has many good features, I wonder if the XXX and other unsavory items, would have been allowed onto the web if it still resided with private enterprise.

Actually phone service went public in 1984, when the government destroyed AT&T. Of course, it hammered on them with the split up of Western Electric and Graybar and other Communications acts through out the years.
Now we have three major protocaols for cell phones, developed by AT&T for the military, and phone service that is slightly confusing.

“How can Americans — any and all Americans — delude themselves into believing they’re not better off here than they would be anywhere else in the world? In Cuba, 300,000 families are getting new Chinese-made refrigerators. “Actually, they’re quite expensive,” said one purchaser. “I’m paying the equivalent of $286. My wife and I make about $25 a month. So, like most people, we’re financing it over a 10-year period at 10 percent interest.” Another, 42, said, “This is the first time I see a brand- new fridge.”
Cuba proves to you,Mr Wooten that ‘Anywhere else in the world is worse off than America”?!!!

Mr. Wooten loses credibility with me (I know, I know, I’m too generous) when he ignores pertinent NEWS of the day in favor taking yet another cheap shot at “the left” — and it IS a cheap shot Mr. Wooten if you drag up a LIE (“Gore says he created the Internet!”) from an election six whole years ago that has since been refuted by “lefties” and “rightes” alike.
A man in Mr. Wooten’s position has the potential to truly inform us regarding the issues of the day, issues he is free to choose and spin as he pleases. But he panders to his steady base instead: people who are not interested in facts, news, or information, but rather, only in a daily list of excuses and one-liners with which to bash “the left.” What a sad, sad waste of potential.

Hey Howard, Hey Howard, Hey Howard, You say Carter did nothing for 444 days? How did that deal ever turn out anyway? Did those hostages come home alive? Think about it: when people are taken hostage, what is the number 1 goal for the outcome of the situation? What do the families of the hostages want? What did all Americans want at that time? How did they want it to turn out? The number 1 goal is for the hostages to be released alive so they can come home. How did that deal ever turn out anyway? Oh yeah, they came home alive. I noticed that you wished for a Secretary of Defense WITH MILITARY EXPERIENCE.
Did you forget that Rumsfeld served in the Navy as an aviator and flight instructor for three years? Then went into the reserve after that? Did you not know that or just conveniently forgot?
If Rumsfeld is not to your liking, then you must want a Jimmy Carter type. I believe you said you didn’t. Rumfeld has made some seemingly poor decisions. Fighting Saddam was one thing but the terrorists there now are another. It is a different warfare involving men, women and children used as sacrificial combatants against us. The rules of war change. If all does not go well as we ADAPT, Rumsfeld is not totally to blame. We have Generals in Iraq who do not totally agree in their decisions.
But Rumsfeld is strong as is the president. I support them in the belief that we will leave Iraq as a country able to govern itself in freedom.

What is it with the mythology surrounding Jimmy Carter? The man was an unmitigated disaster as a chief executive. He became a joke to Americans. The press derided him unmercifully. A sizeable portion of his own party revolted in 1980 and tried to deny him re-nomination. He typically conceded defeat *before” the election that November. His lasting presidential legacy is his part in helping to create a radical Islamic Iran. He left office a joke, yet over the last 26 years he has reinvented himself somehow and is trotted out by the press and his party as some sort of elder statesman.
Others say he is the best ex-president we have ever had. Someone above says, “… Carter’s service to humanity since his time in office is unparalleled in the annals of former Presidents”. Really, based on what? His blatant support of the Palestinians to the determent of Israel? His efforts to derail support for the Gulf War? His inserting himself into American policy matters such as visiting North Korea during the Clinton administration and instigating the deal that allowed the North Koreans to obtain nuclear weapons? His certifying that the Cubans didn’t have chemical weapons based on Castro’s telling him so? His condemnations of his own country every time he sets foot on foreign soil?
I don’t get it. What benefits has he bestowed on humanity that offset the harm he causes?

I seem to recall reading somewhere that Bush was a fighter pilot in the National Guard who applied for service in Vietnam but was turned down because there was gult of pilots available. I have friends from that era who were in the service but never went near Vietnam. Does that mean their Daddys got them out of it? Just a guess, but I’d bet that the vast majority of people in the military during the Vietnam didn’t actually serve there. There was the whole rest of the world after all.

Realist,
Maybe you should read MidSouth’s post again. He said he would life a Secretary of Defense with MILITARY EXPERIENCE. I do not know what he might have meant other than he doesn’t like Rumsfeld who has military experience.
Rumsfeld is strong and smart. He’s not perfect but name someone who is.
And DANA,

We can agree to disagree Dusty. I dont beleive his military service (which isnt much more impressive than some members of my own family) qualifies him for his position, which isnt to say he isnt qualified, just not soley on his military experience. Furthermore, I do beleive you are right, he is smart, but strong Im not convinced. He does not have a background commanding forces which I would like to see in someone responsbile for our defense.
I disagree with his ideology of smaller more agile forces. Yes, this worked perfectly in Afghanistan because we were fighting a small, fleeting enemy. It is failing miserably in Iraq and I feel more forces are needed. A heavier hand.
All that being said, I think he is a good man, but there are some better suited for that position during this time in history.

The left opposed Vietnam and applauded those who avoided military service at the time. Thirty years later they make it a requirement that you not only had to serve - and not in the lowly National Guard - but also have done time in Vietnam because they think it makes them look warrior-like to a supposedly gullible American public. Talk about hypocrisy and opportunism.

Realist,
You may be right that we need someone besides Rumsfeld for Secretary of Defense. But who? (or should I say whom?)
Do you want a General whose whole life is spent in the military? I thought that was the whole idea. Get someone who also has civilian experience to give that outlook to the plans of the military. Balance.
I really don’t think there is someone stronger than Rumsfeld to do the job. May be. President Bush doesn’t seem to think so and he has full view of the situation.

How many people can run on a record of commanding large forces in a strategic manner in the context of political decesions made by civilian superiors? Washington, Grant, Eisenhower, that’s about it. Did Linclon have vast military experience? How about FDR? The first Bush flew a torpedo plane in WWII. The second Bush never ran on his military record. Kerry has never stopped talking about his record which is probably no more distinguised than those of Realist’s family members.

I coulda swore I saw Realist at Countryland Golf Club yesterday afternoon. He was standing way up on the bank above No. 2 fairway, I guess he had hit the ball to the right, of course, never left. Anyway, while he was pointing his playing partner toward something on No. 4, he was kinda nudging the ball with his foot, to get out from behind a little bush. Anyway, he gave me an idea, and I tried it out on Jim Earl a few times. Jim Earl like to have died when he had to hand over two quarters to me at the end of the round. He thought I was Hoodunnit, or something, the way I kept getting out of those tight spots.
Anyway, I knowed Jimmy Carter was going to be a bad president even before he ran for president. While he was governor, he had signed a budget and all these state employees was issued contracts for the next year. Then he tried to cancel the contracts. Course, the courts made him put them back, but I marked him down right then as a welcher. He didn’t disappoint me when he became president. The first thing he did was put libruls in all the jobs.
I have to admit I voted for him the first time cause I figured he was a Georgia good old boy. But he sure proved me wrong. I got no use for him now. If he had any desensy, he would just die off and stop saying bad things about the best president we ever had.

Ask him about whether it is a requirement to take a physical in order to get your certification to be a pilot? Ask Van if you complete your pilot’s training you will be issued a pilot’s license? Ask Van if Mr. Bush went into the National Guard as a “slick sleeve” who never had any ROTC and was given a commission within the early weeks of his entry? I would be willing to bet the farm that none of you can collect of the $10,000 reward being offered for anyone who can place Mr. Bush at the Air National Guard graduation and his certification as a F-100 pilot.

Van is not using my name. My point is, Van and I are both Viet Nam vets and we both know the procedure required for Mr. Bush to be a pilot in the Air National Guard. Jackie,
Basically I disagree with you. W opened up his records and proved that he did become a F-102 pilot and was certified. His records also show he completed his required time and received an honorable discharged. Yes, he did not get his flight physical and therefore lost his flight status, but he did serve in uniform as a pilot. BTW, while I was eligible to ride backseat, I never had a certificate in hand, but I did rack up enough hours to earn my flight pay.

I think if Van ran for President, and anyone questioned Van’s record, people would come forth with PHOTOGRAPHS.
Signatures on papers in a file are one thing. Photographs are another. Van, do you have any pictures of yourself with the men who served beside you? On the tarmac? In front of the plane? At the base? At the bar? Were photographs taken of you and these MEN WHO SERVED TOGETHER? Would any of these other men or their children have photographs of you, in your uniforms, side by side, on the tarmac, in front of the plane, on the base? “Look, there’s my Daddy in his flight suit, and next to him is Van!”
Where are these photos of Chimpy, his squad, his crew, and his plane? If they ever existed at all, why wouldn’t they have been trotted out in 2004 at the Repug convention along with the “purple heart” band-aids?

@Van,
I have many hours of stick time in a Huey, but, I am not a certified pilot. You say that he completed his time to obtain his certification in F-102, where is his pilot’s license? Secondly, YOU CAN NOT GET YOUR LICENSE IF YOU DO NOT TAKE YOU FLIGHT PHYSICAL!!!!!!!! Therefore, the paperwork that is available does not give us the actual picture. Mr. Bush was never a certified pilot; Mr. Bush was “given” a commission without going through OCS or ROTC; Mr. Bush never obtained certified flight status, therefore, he did not fulfill his obligation to the Air National Guard. How do you explaina that?

Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. Both Al Gore and John Kerry opened their military records to the public. John Kerry served in Viet Nam twice as a commander for a Riverine boat in the Mekong Delta. Had a high school friend that served in that fleet and you have to understand that riding up and down the Mekong in an aluminum boat and RPG’s and Ak-47’s and those d**n Russian-made anti-aircraft 37mm quad-fours pounding at was no joke. Colin Powell was assigned to the 9th Inf Div (Americal) in the Mekong under Gen. Davidson twice. As you know, most folks that were in a shooting war try to “forget” as much of that as possible because it is one thing to shoot at a target, it is something altogether different when the target shoots back.

Sorry to upset you Pete. I press the hypocrites on the point of service when they continue to defend a lie as if it were their own special point of honor. Obviously Iraq is a mess. Obviously, the war has been mismanaged and misdirected. Obviously Bin Laden hasn’t missed a meal or a dialysis treatment since ordering his fellow Saudis to attack the US five years ago, even though nearly 3,000 soldiers have died since then.
What’s the point of pressing people like that to answer? Because they keep defending the lie, based on another lie, based on another lie, and wearing it like a badge of f###ing HONOR! Then they use that lie to call the rest of us “immoral” and accuse us helping the terrorists.

Hello, everyone. I’ve been busy working and have not had time to engage.
Wondering if anyone has seen the commentary on msnbc.com about Rumsfeld’s speech to veterans in New Orleans? Apparently if you do not agree with the administration’s policy regarding Iraq, you are a fascist according to Rumsfeld.
Read it here
For a nation founded upon dissent and protest, it shows that Rumsfeld apparently thinks such concepts belong back in the dark ages. As in 1776.
Now we are supposed to be good girls and boys and smile sweetly as our rights are summarily dismissed.
My ancestors were fighting by the side of George Washington in those long ago days and their gene was passed on to me. Not to look at politicians (or King George) as leaders or shining examples of humanity, but rather people about whom we should always maintain vigilance and concern.
