Meet Jim
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Jim Wooten, a native of McRae, Ga., and a graduate of the University of Georgia, is a long-time Georgia newspaperman.
After working at newspapers in Athens, Macon and Atlanta, he joined U.S. News & World Report for six years covering seven Southeastern states. After rejoining The Atlanta Journal, he served in several newsroom leadership roles before being named editorial page editor in January 1992. When The Journal was merged into the morning Atlanta Constitution in 2001, he was named associate editorial page editor of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. He writes often about politics and government.
A Vietnam veteran, Wooten served in the Georgia Army National Guard for more than 20 years.
He is past president of the Georgia Press Association and remains a trustee of the Georgia Press Education Foundation. He was chosen in 1996 as the Outstanding Alumnus of the University of Georgia’s College of Journalism and Mass Communications. Georgia Trend magazine has named him one of the year’s 100 most influential Georgians for most of the past decade. The statewide monthly news magazine James also includes him among its most influential Georgians.
