C’mon, you know why Bush is happy. Anything that’s bad for America is, by definition, good news for Bush. In some cases, it helps distract from all the crimes he’s committing and the colossal failures he’s racked up.

Of course Bush is happy with these high oil prices, global warming, and prospects of another senseless war where he can finally hammer in the last nail on America’s coffin. He’s an idiot and he’s fulfilling his idiotic destiny.

The fact that Limbaugh is as successful financially as he is is testimony to the shallowness and ignorance of his listeners. Unlike Lake Woebegone, the children of Limbaughland are a little below average. We’re talking Far Side here.

Disrespect to Charles Schulz

I am shocked by Luckovich’s July 3 cartoon. Clearly Luckovich has never had any respect for morals, family values or people’s religious beliefs. But this latest cartoon proves Luckovich has no respect for federal law or for his fellow cartoonists, not even the honorable talented and renowned Charles Schulz.

The Peanuts comic strip is unsurpassed. It has entertained millions for generations. Charles Schulz never used profanity in any of his cartoons. He relied on wisdom, wit, and cleverness, traits that Luckovich sorely lacks. Why would a self-proclaimed family newspaper run a cartoon with the implied use of a vulgar profanity by the beloved Lucy character. Have you no class? Is Luckovich’s talent so lacking that he must steal from Schulz?

I truly hope that the heirs of Charles Schulz and/or the licensees of the Peanut characters (i.e. Met Life & Hallmark Cards) sue Luckovich and Cox Enterprises for copyright infringement and trademark disparagement. Then maybe Cox Enterprises will fire Luckovich and hire a cartoonist that doesn’t defame someone else’s intellectual property.

Shawny

That was a good cartoon.

Seems to me, this is a classic case of Dems being long on theory and short on implementation. And of Reps being long on theory but hazy on the reasons.

I’ve said before - we have two strategic interests in the Middle East - and one is oil. For decades neither our Presidents or Congresses have done anything to disengage us from that reason for having a presence there.

Obama and McCain are both approaching alternate energy, or increased domestic production, as a response to high oil prices. They should be advocating such policies even if prices decline.

Obama is alienating voters by not offering even the appearance of relief from hight prices. McCain’s missing by not tying his proposals to our not having to have a Mideast presence along the lines of the Cold War model - decades after the cessation of hostilities.

Pursuing domestic production will likely not have a long-term effect on rising prices, but it will provide an interim source of supply while alternate forms are developed, possibly equal to what we now import from the Middle East - projecting for offsets in demand by alternate power forms. Obama hasn’t addressed this. McCain hasn’t addressed how his advocacy of nuclear, renewables, etc. ties in with his long-stated advocacy to reduce greenhouse gases and carbon use. He could show that is an advantage, even if not the primary reason, by developing nonpetroleum energy sources, which would negate the long-term reasons for the US to have a Mideast presence.

Even Obama hasn’t made that connection. He’s still looking short-term, clouded by Iraq, which is why his position on the future of American military involvement is becoming less distinguishable from McCain.

Just like the cartoon, Shawny. The pieces are there, but they’re not connected.

truthman,

I think there’s a larger issue at play. Many who assail the Bush Administration (Executive) for invasions of privacy, snooping, attempting to build a database of personal or business information, etc., especially without a warrant,

seem to support the Congress (Legislative) to be able to do the same thing - demand records without a warrant. Saying “they get tax dollars or they’re tax exempt” isn’t a justification. Normal protections against government intrusion should still hold. Congress assumes the right to demand information that would lead to howls of protest if the Bush Administration did it to causes near and dear to the Left.

What would a George Bush scooby snack look like? Maybe millions of dollars in profits from his stake in the defense contracts.

Should we let our public office holders profit from their office?

Should we? Seems to me we’d always be at war, which is capitalism’s greatest revenue source.

Paul, I agree we need to pursue domestic production. Initially I totally disagreed, but as you (I believe it was you, forgive me if I’m wrong), have stated here, times do change dictating the need for a change in direction and thinking.

Do you really think we would be able to keep the oil we would produce, or would this (oil) also be shipped to ‘somewhere,’ still leaving the American people up the creek, so to speak.

Evidentally we MUST pursue alternative sources, but does anyone have the vision, or do they care? It doesn’t seem to be so. I’m really concerned about the future of this great country.

Good question about how new oil would be directed. IF the world market price is X and doesn’t vary by country, seems it’d be sensible to keep it and refine it here. Else, laws directing oil produced domestically needs to satisfy domestic demands first. I’m usually not keen on such gov’t direction but this is an extraordinary situation.

As I wrote in my first post, referencing Shawny’s ‘toon, the elements of inability of current domestic production to meet demand or offset Mideast imports; current environmental and production restrictions; programs for developing alternate energy sources (including revising permitting for nuclear); continuing gov’t support of questionable paths (ethanol subsidies to agribusiness); and, our presence in the Middle East.

I keep hoping someone running will link them and say “here’s my plan. Everyone won’t like elements of it. But all parties have to give up something. It’s a national security issue.”

Steven Covey once said to begin with the end in mind. “Develop alternate energy” or “reduce foreign dependence” or “get out of Iraq” do not adequately define the end point.

By Shawny

July 3, 2008 10:48 AM | Link to this

Here is the thing I think many don’t get when it comes to increasing domestic production. While the oil we would produce would be added to the world market, it would have to be a HUGE amount to drastically reduce oil prices…I get that. HOWEVER, at $145/bbl, producers of oil IN THE US would be raking in that money, and those that have the mineral rights to whatever lands are developed…also IN THE US, paying US taxes, in an economy that is depressed in a country that needs the cash.

Don’t do it, and the rest of the money is profiting hand over fist while we don’t.

That is short term income while we work on long term solutions, which is imperative to get off of this oil fix that we are on.

It is a national security issue, and “everyone” needs to get over it. It would be nice to have a leader emerge, who has no need of money, power and all the trappings; someone who cares about people and the future of the country.

Suppose it would be a miracle to find ANYONE with this type of self esteem.

I read in the March 10, 2008 issue of American Conservative “The average American G.I. in Iraq uses about 20.5 gallons of fuel per day, more than double the daily vol consumed by US soldiers in Iraq in 2004…..nearly every drop of that fuel is imported into Iraq……these massive fuel requirements……..are a key reason for the soaring cost of the war effort.

Thank you much for that link. It lays out an ambitious outline - more than a plan - to stop dependence on foreign oil.

BUT

That speech was over a year ago. He should repeat that message often, loudly and clearly. Particularly the points:

The transfer of American wealth to the Middle East helps sustain the conditions on which terrorists prey. Some of the most oil-rich nations are the most stagnant societies on earth.

breaking our nation’s critical dependence on foreign sources of oil,

Since then he’s talked about an American presence of decades in the Middle East - too much the Cold War model, I think. That obscures, some say contradicts, the points of this speech.

So one speech does not the message make. I’d like to see him emphasize the points over and over and over. Even the points about the ancillary effects of reduced greenhouse gases.

Obama would find himself on the defense as he talks about faith-based initiatives and no drilling (couldn’t resist).

Thanks again,

Well heck Paul (who’s gone but may return.)

You, yourself have said that McCain’s 100 year quote has been misrepresented.

And by that bastion of truth, Obama no less.

And repeatedly I might add. But then considering the enthusiasm of the audiences he addresses….?

Who’s misleading whom?

How exactly is McCain supposed to force people to understand what they have been prepared not to hear? Seems like he’d have to fudge a little. Obama could certainly give him pointers on how to do that, if not outright lie.

I have far more trust for a politician who sometimes tells me what I don’t want to hear.

Whether it’s for the short-term oil or a sense of obligation to the Iraqis, we’ve gotta be prepared to accept the realities. His 100 year comment was an attempt to do that.

Obama’s done more misrepresenting than I’d care to see. The 100 year quote is a good example. But his followup did follow the Cold War model, referencing US forces in Europe and Japan (no casualties). You know I’d be pleased, fiscally, politically and militarily, if those troops were withdrawn (BTW - after the last cutback in Europe - which Dems opposed - the largest contingent in Germany is in the vacation district. Go figure-).

I heard Obama (at a rally) say “Bush the Third” and remarked at the time it was disappointing and played to the faithful. But it’s continued. The fact he has to continue with that line - playing off antipathy towards Bush - and not directly against McCain is telling.

So yes, McCain has stated some things people don’t want to hear. But I think he should state them again, and again, and again. Pretty soon people will consider, then understand, then believe.

Worked for “Bush lied” didn’t it?

Paul,

McCain and Obama’s energy plans have many points that are the same which is encouraging to me. So regardless of whose becomes President, things are going to change.

The biggest problem as I see it are our oil companies. The way I see it, they care more about their profits, and absolutely nothing about the American consumer.

But to the oil companies, and most any other corporation, there are no countries, only profit. And I don’t have a problem with capitalism working, but with absolutely no taxpayer money helping them along.

Naive? Yeap. But can’t a person dream?

Paul,

I’m not sure McCain’s point in his mangled 100 years quote was either that he thought it was OK or that he was a proponent of that. When you read the actual interchange it simply sounds like he’s saying that as long as no Americans were getting killed or injured most people wouldn’t care how long they were there.

I thought it was more along the lines of most people wouldn’t care - just as they don’t care about all the other places we have forces. It’s a fair point.

But it’s too dang much money to keep subsidizing other countries with. And it creates the impression - accurate or not - that he’d be fine with a decades-long presence there.

Your last paragraph - I’m watching the HBO series about John Adams. There was a line last night, Adams to Washington and Jefferson, about how they provided, in the Constitution, for a strong Executive to counter the corruption that would befall the Congress. Words to that effect. I wondered how many people choked the first time they hear that.

Bosch

Yes, it is heartening. And a reason, of all the candidates, I’m glad it was McCain the Reps nominated. I think on that issue he //could// be an agent for change.

I like the point about no subsidies for those who put country way in the background.

Paul,

I think the McCain 100 year quote was misrepresented, as is almost anything else in politics, but I have a problem with permanent bases in Iraq, and the oil companies moving in - the ones Saddam kicked out 30 years ago.

I have a big problem with that.

It seems to me that the oil companies do not want to drill here, otherwise, they would be doing it. The big oil executives sit back and love to hear blame, blame, blame from all sides, when in fact, they are the ones to blame (in my opinion).

And since the title of the cartoon is about happiness, I had something last night that made me very happy and I would like to share with you all since it is a holiday weekend - it will also give you lots of energy, since that’s what the conversation has gone to:

Watermelon Salad

cut 5 pound watermelon in cubes (take off the peel first) - you could also throw in some cantaloupe 1 vidalia onion Package of Gorgonzola Cheese chopped mint 1/2 cup red wine vinegar 2 tbsp. honey Salt/Pepper

Mix in a bowl and eat! It will make you happy happy happy, just like Snoopy.

By Paul

Bosch

I’d read that the leases oil companies hold now inland are for the right to explore, and if oil is found, to drill. Saw stats that said since 1999 about half of the drill sites panned out. But the offshore - 50 miles - are proven. Sink a shaft, out comes the oil. But I think the Congress could find a way to persuade them. Might jeopardize some campaign contributions, though.

I understand the Iraqis are redoing their bids for oil companies. Fine - it’s their country. And I am in agreement with no permanent bases. Sends an entirely wrong message to the population over there.

I like the transition - thanks! I’m saving that - recommended for a great red wine vinegar - Spectrum Naturals Organic Red Wine Vinegar. Tremendous flavor - really changes many recipes. Too late for the plans tomorrow - already have the stuff going. It’s also my birthday so it’ll be a traditional cookout and dunk in the pool.
