A million years could go by and people will still be astonished by this monstrosity:

{{{{The Supreme Court on Thursday rejected for the third time President Bush’s policy of holding foreign prisoners at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, under control of the military, ruling that these men have a right to seek their freedom before a >>>>>federal judge.<<<<<-Urinal/PMS}}}}

“Your Honor, I believe the tail of that747 jetliner is inadmissible as evidence in the state’s case against Mr. Bin Laden because, uh, it don’t got his fingerprints on it.”

“If the tail doesn’t hit, you must acquit, bwa.”

Sick, sick, sick.

How much longer are we gonna take it, America?

Can you not see that these people hate us and this country?

~~~~~
{{{{Scalia is blunter: “What drives today’s decision is neither the meaning of the Suspension Clause, nor the principles of our precedents, but rather an inflated notion of judicial supremacy.”}}}}
{{{{Thanks to lefties on the court, the latest way for foreigners to bring themselves under the umbrella of the U.S. Constitution, without the messiness and bother of trying to immigrate, or even trying to sneak across the border, is to attack U.S. forces on the field of battle.}}}}
~~~~~

{{{{The relentlessly negative impressions of American life presented by the media, including the entertainment media, explain something otherwise puzzling that shows up in psychological data. When asked about the country’s economy, schools, health care or community spirit, Americans tell pollsters the situation is dreadful. But when asked about their own jobs, schools, doctors and communities, people tell pollsters the situation is good. Our impressions of ourselves and our neighbors come from personal experience. Our impressions of the nation as a whole come from the media and from political blather, which both exaggerate the negative.}}}}

{{{{The top elected official in northwest Pakistan said Thursday the country should rethink its relationship with America after a U.S. airstrike that reportedly killed 11 Pakistani soldiers.-Urinal/POS}}}}

Oh, the Joy!

Too bad we got video:

{{{{The grainy, monochrome images show about a half-dozen men firing rifles and rocket-propelled grenades from a ridge at coalition troops off camera in the valley below.}}}}

~~~~~~
{{{{A group of real estate developers and property owners in La Manga del Mar Menor - a spit of sandy, low-lying coastal land and Murcia’s premier beach resort - are threatening to take Greenpeace to court over its graphic predictions of what global warming may do to the area, which they say have caused house prices to plummet.}}}}
I said last night we would see many links today inaccurately portraying the Court’s decision. And so we have. I saw nearly the same words in a newspaper article “compiled from other reports” - in other words, not lifted from a wire service or other newspaper. Funny how “reporters” from two papers can come up with the same concepts and wording, isn’t it?
{{{{The Supreme Court on Thursday rejected for the third time President Bush’s policy of holding foreign prisoners at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, under control of the military,}}}
The Court did NOT reject the policy of holding foreign prisoners at Gitmo.
The Court did NOT reject the military holding foreign fighters at Gitmo, or anywhere else.
The Court did not reject solely the Bush Administration. It also rejected Congress, as the policies were crafted by Congress (which Party was controlling is irrelevant in this case) and the Executive in response to earlier holdings. As one dissenting opinion noted, when four Justices of the majority arlier decision stated the Pres should return to Congress for specific authority bypassing habeas, who now found that a problem, they were “just kidding.”
“And today it is not just the military that the Court elbows aside. A mere two Terms ago in Hamdan v. Rumsfeld… when the Court held (quite amazingly) that the Detainee Treatment Act of 2005 had not stripped habeas jurisdiction over Guantanamo petitioners’ claims, four Members of today’s five-Justice majority joined an opinion saying the following: “Nothing prevents the President from returning to Congress to seek the authority [for trial by military commission] he believes necessary. “Where, as here, no emergency prevents consultation with Congress, judicial insistence upon that consultation does not weaken our Nation’s ability to deal
By Paul
“Where, as here, no emergency prevents consultation with Congress, judicial insistence upon that consultation does not weaken our Nation’s ability to deal with danger. To the contrary, that insistence strengthens the Nation’s ability to determine—how best to do so. The Constitution places its faith in those democratic means…. Turns out they were just kidding. For in response, Congress, at the President’s request, quickly enacted the Military Commissions Act, emphatically reasserting that it did not want these prisoners filing habeas petitions. It is therefore clear that Congress and the Executive—both political branches—have determined that limiting the role of civilian courts in adjudicating whether prisoners captured abroad are properly detained is important to success in the war”
As posted yesterday, here’s the… dang, what’s the word?… hmmm, oh yeah, thanks, ITN - the “source” material:
Link: Bourmediene v Bush
This excerpt is priceless. Uberlibs will love the use of the word “faux”:
“Even today, the Court cannot resist striking a pose of faux deference to Congress and the President. Citing the above quoted passage, the Court says: “The political branches, consistent with their independent obligations to interpret and uphold the Constitution, can engage in a genuine debate about how best to preserve constitutional values while protecting the Nation from terrorism.” Ante, at 69. Indeed. What the Court apparently means is that the political branches can debate, after which the Third Branch will decide.”
Believe me, I sense the mounting anger in America over this atrocity, but understand people, we DO NOT HAVE TO PUT UP WITH THIS:
Dearest (your representative’s name here)
1) Enemy combatants are not citizens of the United States therefore are not entitled to any protections under our Constitution.
2) The Supreme Court has assurped the powers of the Executive Branch, which are clearly enumerated by the Constitution, to provide the Executive with sole powers necessary to conduct our nation’s wars.
As my Representative to the Congress of the United States of America, I expect you to introduce, in the most expeditious manner possible, legislation that will restrict the Supreme Court of the United States to it’s sole and only intended purpose, which is to provide oversight of the nation’s laws in relation to the Constitution, not to impose law from an unelected judicial fiat.
We are serious about this and your action is required.
It would appear as though our more liberal justices had a “fire” in the belly.
Ramsey Yousef’s apartment fire was in 1995. “Law enforcement” (FBI) served no useful purpose then. Now our liberal justices have chosen to serve the useful purpose of our enemy with this ruling.
“Our job is to instigate, and by the grace of God, we did that, and certain people responded to this instigation.” - Osama Bin Laden
You certainly did Osama. Our military responded with swift and immediate justice, the liberals have fought to deliver you with THE RIGHT to our justice system.
“If the instigation for jihad against the Jews and the Americans … is considered a crime, then let history be a witness that I am a criminal.” - Osama Bin Laden
See! The liberals, their justices and Osama Bin Laden agree. His was a “criminal” act….not an act of war.
w00t, thanks for the link.
My time and journeys on this planet confirm a number of the facts presented therein.
Once people move past their teenage years, MOST are better able to see and evaluate the world in a realistic way and make informed decisions using reason, ration, experience and intelligence rather than relying excessively on fear of an angry, vengeful “god” and blind obedience to the fraudulent but ultra-charismatic religious power brokers who have always charted the course of these religions.
Which means, for most, dropping the silly dogma and the irrational mythology.
And forever disassociating themselves from those self-serving charlatans and otherwise obvious loons that have reached new depths of arrogance, misguided influence in government and of depravity.
But after a brief “conservative” “revival” in this country, it would appear that the flat-earth gang is once again going to be relegated to a seat at the children’s table vis a vis our governance, where they belong.
I have predicted before that in fifty years, the three great religions will be essential irrelevant, especially as a tool to bludgeon others via the government, excepting to the fanatics here and abroad, especially in the Middle East and in Israel.
(I recently talked with a good friend who just returned from Israel and he confirmed that BY FAR most Israelis are not at all religious.)
But the conclusion of that article is correct and the truth is inescapable, the numbers and significance of the “faithful” are continually dwindling in the centers of civilization and enlightenment.
And that bodes well for mankind…
{{{{Well, it is simply not happening. Worldwide there was a significant natural warming trend in the 1980’s and 1990’s as a Solar cycle peaked with lots of sunspots and solar flares. That ended in 1998 and now the Sun has gone quiet with fewer and fewer Sun spots, and the global temperatures have gone into decline. Earth has cooled for almost ten straight years. So, I ask Al Gore, where’s the global warming?}}}}
{{{{The cooling trend is so strong that recently the head of the United Nation’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change had to acknowledge it. He speculated that nature has temporarily overwhelmed mankind’s warming and it may be ten years or so before the warming returns. Oh, really. We are supposed to be in a panic about man-made global warming and the whole thing takes a ten year break because of the lack of Sun spots. If this weren’t so serious, it would be laughable.}}}}
{{{{Here is the deal about CO2, carbon dioxide. It is a natural component of our atmosphere. It has been there since time began. It is absorbed and emitted by the oceans. It is used by every living plant to trigger photosynthesis. Nothing would be green without it. And we humans; we create it. Every time we breathe out, we emit carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. It is not a pollutant. It is not smog. It is a naturally occurring invisible gas.}}}}
{{{{Let me illustrate. I estimate that this square in front of my face contains 100,000 molecules of atmosphere. Of those 100,000 only 38 are CO2; 38 out of a hundred thousand. That makes it a trace component. Let me ask a key question: how can this tiny trace upset the entire balance of the climate of Earth? It can’t. That’s all there is to it; it can’t.}}}}
Iraqi PM says security talks with US at impasse
This is the really scary part:
[Al-Sadr issued a new statement Friday calling for restraint in an apparent bid to exert control over his Mahdi Army militia fighters.
The cleric, who is believed to be in Iran, said the militia will continue to resist U.S.-led forces in Iraq but fighting should be limited to a select group.
“Weapons will be in the hands of this group exclusively and will only be directed at the occupier,” he said, using standard rhetoric for the American forces in Iraq in a statement read after Friday prayers in the southern city of Kufa](http://www.newsday.com/news/nationworld/nation/wire/sns-ap-iraq,0,4932927.story?page=2)
I still think the guy is a little weasel but he is definitely improving…
Bob Barr, the Libertarian Party candidate for president, admits he was wrong in his support for the “War on Drugs” and that it’s now time to call the war off because it’s doing far more harm than good.
“I see no progress in stopping the widespread use of drugs,” Barr concedes. “I’ll even argue that America’s drug problem is larger today than it was when Richard Nixon first coined the phrase, ‘War on Drugs,’ in 1972.”
Barr, a former federal prosecutor and congressman from Georgia, was once one of the federal drug war’s most vocal proponents. In the past, he advocated complete federal prohibition of medical marijuana and, in 1998, successfully blocked implementation of Initiative 59 – the legalization of marijuana for medical treatment.
Barr later reversed his position on medical marijuana and now supports ending marijuana prohibition.
“America’s drug problem is only compounded by the vast amounts of money directed at this ongoing battle,” Barr says, noting that in 2005, more than $12 billion dollars was spent on federal drug enforcement efforts while another $30 billion was spent to imprison non-violent drug offenders.
Barr points to the huge incarceration tab in America, along with just a 30% interception rate of hard drugs, as reasons why the ‘War on Drugs’ has not succeeded.
“While it is clear the ‘War on Drugs’ has been a failure, it is not enough to simply acknowledge that reality,” Barr admits.
WHAT A BEAUTIFUL DAY!!!
The corona’s are ICEY cold.
HERE’S A LITTLE READIN MATERIAL….
Republicans offer the same old tired slogans that they have touted throughout the Bush years and that haven’t done anything to combat the increase in gas prices
More Drilling: Domestic drilling has not led to lower prices. Since 2000, drilling has increased dramatically – climbing about 66 percent– while gas prices continue to increase. and gas companies have shown that they cannot keep pace with the rate of drilling permits that the federal government is handing out – over the past 4 years they have received and are sitting on nearly 10,000 permits that they aren’t using to increase domestic production. Since 1999, drilling permits for oil and gas development on public lands increased more than 361 percent.
OCS: The vast majority of federal oil and gas resources located on the OCS are already open for development - of all the oil and gas believed to exist on the OCS, nearly 80% of oil and 82% of natural gas is located in areas already open for leasing. In 2006, the federal government opened 8.3 million new acres in the Gulf of Mexico to drilling, yet gasoline prices have increased by $1.69 per gallon. Only 10.5 million of the 44 million leased offshore acres are actually producing oil or gas.
Open ANWR: EIA estimates that if we open ANWR today, twenty years down the road, at peak production, gas prices would be lowered at the maximum by $1.44 per barrel, which translates to only a few cents a gallon. Increased conservation and the use of alternative technologies in the last three years have cut the projected need for imported oil between now and 2050 by more than 100 billion barrels (EIA) – ten times more benefit than what we might be able to get a decade from now from ANWR.
More Refineries: We have excess refining capacity. Last week, our refineries were running at 89% capacity – well below the 95-98% capacity use rates we’ve seen this time of year for the last decade. Republicans argue that environmental regulations are preventing new refineries from being built in the U.S. From 1975 to 2000, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) received only one permit request for a new refinery, which was approved. In addition, oil companies are regularly applying for – and receiving – permits to modify and expand their existing refineries.
SOME MORE READING MATERIAL
Republicans and Democrats have a fundamentally different approach to tackling high gas prices. Democrats are being aggressive today to lower prices and reduce dependence on foreign oil while thinking ahead to tomorrow
Working to Address Rising Gas Prices
Enacted legislation to increase oil supply by temporarily suspending the fill of the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, the nation’s crude oil stockpile. (H.R. 6022)
Gave the FTC new authority to crack down on those manipulating wholesale energy markets to keep prices high in the Energy Independence and Security Act (H.R. 6)
Approved the Gas Price Relief for Consumers Act (H.R. 6074) to hold the OPEC monopoly accountable for price fixing that flouts the free market and artificially drives up the cost of crude oil.
Passed the Federal Price Gouging Prevention Act (H.R. 1252) to investigate price gouging by retailers who may be using the cover of high prices to unfairly inflate their rates even further.
Investing in a Sustainable, Energy Independent America
Enacted the landmark Energy Independence and Security Act (H.R. 6) that raised vehicle fuel efficiency for the first time in 32 years and increased the renewable fuels standard.
Passed the Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation Act (H.R. 5351) to end unnecessary subsidies to oil companies making record profits and invest in clean, renewable energy and energy efficiency.
Approved the Renewable Energy and Job Creation Act (H.R. 6049) to renew and expand tax incentives for renewable energy.
Passed the Food and Energy Security Act (H.R. 2419) that promotes the development of biofuels, including those from non-corn sources.
If costs go up then of course prices go up. But why then would profits go up? Shouldn’t it be a wash? YEP
Thanks. I’ve been rushing this morning - thanks for the info on Obama. Those guys have every minute scheduled well in advance. I do hope, regardless of format, that we see them both in an arena where there’s some kind of lottery/pick the name from the phone book audience, where the audience is told to discuss their question with no one, and where applause is prohibited. Oh, and no reporters moderating or asking the questions. Just a flashing red light that means “time’s up.”
Obama and McCain both are thoughtful guys. It’s good to break them both out of the canned response/applause line situation and see how they both come at specific issues.
Of course, if wishes were fishes…
WARNING: This is in regards to Battlestar Galactica.
Thank heavens!!! See? We knew there was just no way they could tie it up in one more episode. Unless there was some suspension of the time and space continuum.
“Unless there was some suspension of the time and space continuum”
That’s on the show “Lost” (the other Bosch show). Watch that one? I know things get confusing sometimes, but get your shows straght, man!
Just kidding. :-)
This is for you too Amvet, because I think it’s relative -
Did you know that Monty Python’s Flying Circus comes on Friday nights I think at 8:00 on BBC America? I’ve also told you about another show I like on that channel: Robin Hood - it’s pretty good - Saturdays at 9:00.
AmVet,
Been watch Euro 2008? The Germans got beat yesterday! I’m stunned, shocked, disappointed, and now horribly depressed. Damn Croatians - I mean, I could take it if they got beat by somebody like Italy - the World Cup Champs - even though I hate Italy (football team, not country) - but Croatia? I can’t bear to even think about it. If Battlestar Galactica wasn’t coming on tonight, I don’t know what I’d do.
BUT, Italy tied Romania today. Italy’s goalkeeper, Buffon, made an INCREDIBLE save against a Romanian penalty kick. It was amazing. I must admit. Ha, ha - the arrogant Italians think they are so great - if it wasn’t for Luca Toni who I admire as a player - I’d spit right now just thinking of them.
Okay, carry on bloggers with the regularly scheduled liberal v. conservative arguing.
AC/DC DUH. Your twisted hatred stops not for a moment. It is your life-blood, your very essence. If you could not hate you could not breathe. An acidulated intellectual eunuch who hugs his hatred and bitterness and personal failures to him like feather boas. Your own low-brow, vacuous mind quite unable to discern the difference between your own vile, cowardly, despicable hatred and those here who simply point it out to you.
At a news conference, Hunt said radical change and leadership are needed. After five decades of declining growth, the SBC reported an actual drop in membership — a decrease of about 40,000 people from 2006 to 2007. Seven out of the last eight years, baptisms have decreased, a more important statistic to many Southern Baptists than membership.
Cheney Acknowledges He Lied About China Drilling ‘60 Miles Off The Coast Of Florida’
On Wednesday, Vice President Dick Cheney gave a speech to the Chamber of Commerce in which he claimed that China, in cooperation with the Cuban government, is drilling for oil “60 miles off the coast of Florida.” “Even the communists have figured out” that drilling for oil is the solution to the energy crisis, Cheney argued.
It’s a talking point favored by the right wing. Cheney was quoting conservative columnist Geroge Will, who wrote on June 6 that China is drilling “60 miles off Florida,” “closer to South Florida than U.S. companies are.” The same day Cheney spoke, Rep. Roy Blunt (R-MO) wrote that Castro was allowing drilling “45 miles from the Florida keys.” Rep. George Radanovich (R-CA) and House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH) have also raised the specter of Chinese drilling just off U.S. shores.
The problem, of course, is that the claim is completely false. After his claim was thoroughly debunked in the press, Cheney acknowledged that he had, in fact, lied in his speech, though his statement today offered no apology and issued only a half-hearted backtrack of his original claim:
It is our understanding that, although Cuba has leased out exploration blocks 60 miles off the coast of southern Florida, which is closer than American firms are allowed to operate in that area, no Chinese firm is drilling there.
I would truly love to see the official release from Cheney’s office that says “I lied about the China drilling thing.”
The fact is that Cuba in cooperation with China and other countries are doing the seimic and geological studies to figure out where the oil is and the best place to put the drill. Does anybody in their right mind believe they’ll find the oil and then let some whiny Cuban enviroweenies talk them out of drilling for it?
Had Cheney said EXPLORING rather than DRILLING he would have been dead on. I’d call that more of a misspeak than a lie.
