ROLL CALL ON GI BILL

By Goldie

May 23, 2008 8:21 AM | Link to this

So, everyone is now supposed to believe that the Clintons are really concerned about the “disenfranchised” voters of FLA and MI? Where was Hillary’s leadership and cries for justice last fall, when she agreed with the rules of the DNC about the primary season and who would be the first states to vote?

And no one wonders what the Clintons would be doing right now if Obama had been ahead with the popular vote in both of those states… that the silence from the Clintons would be deafening.

Goldie,

Considering that it was the REPUBLICAN state legislature that did the actual disenfranchisement (and purposefully at that) - you’d think Hillary would be talking about THAT.

Maybe if Hillary had shown some real leadership on various issues, she might not be losing the Dems’ nomination right now:

Where was Hillary’s leadership back in October 2002 when the Dems were struggling to defeat Bush’s plans for invading Iraq? Maybe if Hillary had not voted “with conviction” to allow Bush’s invasion, more Dems in the US Senate might have followed her lead, we might have stopped Bush’s invasion, and she would then not be losing the nomination today.

[Could the Republicans Pick the Democratic Nominee? — The Untold Story of How the GOP Rigged Florida and Michigan……In Florida, Crushed by a Republican Supermajority

The Republicans don’t just control both houses of the Florida legislature. Their combined 103-to-57 majority allowed them to dictate the terms of the bill that moved the primary to January 29. It is true that all but one of the state’s Democratic legislators supported the bill. But a closer look reveals that vote to be more an indication of a realistic and productive compromise with the ruling Republicans than any intent to breach Democratic rules…..Another factor attracting Democratic votes in the legislature for the bill was one the DNC should certainly appreciate. Governor Crist threw a reform long sought by Florida Democrats into the bill: a mandatory paper trail for all votes cast in future elections. “The Democrats have been fighting for a paper trail bill since 2000,” said State Senator Nan Rich, “and Governor Bush never would support it. So finally we got a governor who was willing to support it and it ended up connected to the early primary bill. That was unfortunate. If the paper trail hadn’t been there, I believe we Democrats would’ve all voted no. Still, if all the Republicans had voted one way and all the Democrats had voted another way, the bill would’ve passed.” (This Christmas tree bill — whose title alone was 154 lines long — had something special for everyone. It would even enable Crist to run as John McCain’s vice presidential candidate, revoking a ban against state officials running for federal office.](http://www.commondreams.org/archive/2008/04/01/8025/)

There’s that word, “CHANGE” again ml.

I remember reading an article early on and linking to it here. “The Democrats would rue the day that Florida and Michigan were punished for their early primaries” said I.

Disenfranchised voters are disenfranchised voters, whether they were so in 2000 or every election since. Democrats are laying down their arms now?

Obama wants to “change” the rules of foreign diplomacy.

“Change” is a word often used by politicians during campaigns. It’s a word that inspires dreamers, not those who are capable of doing on their own.

If Obama takes Hillary as his VP, he’ll have a hard time justifying his call to “CHANGE”…what with her connections to the politics of the past and lobbyists.

The big question becomes who would replace Hillary as VP. I’d like to see someone outside conventional wisdom like General Shinseki ( He’s the General who TOLD the White House BEFORE the Iraq War that we needed about 300,000 troops to win the peace in Iraq. Shinseki was forced into retired the very next year.)

OR Chuck Nagel ( Nagel & Voinvich are the only two decent Republican Senators.)

I think VA Senator Jim Webb would be another terrific choice!

“If Obama takes Hillary as his VP, he’ll have a hard time justifying his call to “CHANGE”…what with her connections to the politics of the past and lobbyists.”

Absof&ckinglutely correct, @@.

It appears that both McCain and Obama have greatly appealed, rightly or not, to those that are fed up with the do-nothing status quo, as defined by two families - the Bushes and the Clintons.

McCain’s claim is a bit more tenuous as he has demonstrated much (misguided?) loyalty to Bushco at times and has been in the much derided Senate for 16 years.

Should either McCain or Obama name a VP who is seen as one of the entrenched in the government, or are somehow too closely connected, either by job or philosophy, to these power brokers, it may be a fatal move.

And lets all just be honest here, shall we?

Change is just a buzz word. It always has been.

I don’t for a moment believe the fundamental and gigantic problems in Washington are going to be dealt with in any significant way. No matter which of these two is elected.

Don’t get me wrong. Either will be a refreshing alternative, especially after the endless debacles of the past 8 years.

But empty campaign promises and slogans and flowery political lip service will not make much difference in the end.

The lobbyists and monied masters will regroup and find even more devious ways to buy off the payola profiteers who “lead” us.

But there is still perhaps a chance to speak out for REAL change in Washington.

George,

Very interesting choices.

Nagel would never switch parties though. I know him fairly well (he is from my home town) and he is a very unique guy.

Some of the less lucid here have referred to him as a liberal and a RINO.

They of course are idiots.

He is staunchly “conservative”, and has voted along with the administration more than any other single GOP senator.

There is one issue and one alone that he disagrees with them on, and it absolutely infuriates these “conservative” baboons.

As a highly decorated combat veteran he knows better than his fighter-pilot hero CIC (who essentially hid out in Alabama stumping for some unknown GOP hack, after getting daddy to get him to the front of the line in the first place ahead of many others who had waited longer) that getting our best KIA had better be for the RIGHT reasons.

And that these bumbling boobs - Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, Pearl and Rice et al - sent them to that needless and moronic meat grinder after cooking the books, squashing every opinion counter to what they wanted to hear and utterly deceiving the nation, was simply more than he could bear.

And he spoke out against the madness.

LOUDLY.

And like the rest of us, he is not going to let these screw ups just dance off into the sunset with no accountability. And so, he indicts them for the partisan, misguided and incompetent posers they are.

Heads in Washington need to roll, but the best we can settle for is another chest pounding chickenhawk massacre this fall…

The leftist dominated Democrats couldn’t even unseat the worst president and administration in US history and I wonder if they will EVER just man up and say, “You know what? We really screwed the pooch”.

Had you trotted out even a halfway decent and palatable candidate and even more importantly, agenda, you would have won both elections HANDS DOWN. TWICE!!!

But no-oooooo.

Most, if not all of the recent Dem candidates cow-towed to the neo-cons simply for political expediency I believe, and voted to give you-know-who the power to do you-know-what.

Shameful. And now some have had their epiphanies about the invasion/occupation.

Spare me.

RB,

Are you REALLY so naive to think that oil prices can’t be manipulated?

Of course, oil prices at up world wide, but the percentage increase in the states far exceeds the rest of the planet.

Here’s a perfect example of what I’m talking about…. Over the last 20 years the price of gas has been roughly 25 to 30 cents less in Georgia than Ohio. Not sure why, but it was consist for 20 years!

Then SUDDENLY two months before the 2006 mid-term election gas prices in Ohio were about 35 cents LESS than Georgia. Why? Well, there was a tight governor’s race AND a tight Senate race in Ohio.

In fact, the lowest gas prices in the nation in Oct. of 2006 were in Ohio and Missouri. Both states had very close Senate races! Yeah sure, just coincidence…..

Even in Georgia the price of gas the day BEFORE the election was $2.07, then magically the day AFTER the election the price was suddenly $2.19.
Up .12 in 48 hours…. Yeah I know, just coincidence……… sure.

You’re nuts, dude!

Most of the gas price differences between states are caused either by differences in the state taxes or by the blends states require for seasonal pollution control. You might look at what the seasonal pollution control time limits are for the states in question and see if they might be close to the changes you’re describing, you know, like when we transition from warm weather to cold in maybe, say, November? Senator Chuck Schumer claims that coercing Saudi Arabia to increase oil production by 1 million barrels a day would drop the per barrel price by $25, saving Americans 62 cent per gallon at the gas pump. Yet, somehow, that same amount of oil coming from Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge would only ease oil prices by a penny.

Anybody care to explain why a million barrels of Saudi oil will lower the per gallon price of gas $.62 and a million barrels of Alaskan oil would only lower prices $.01?

Oh what a tangled web we weave when first we practice to deceive.

After doing a little research, the price of gas has increased in Europe at the same rate it has increased in the States - from what I’ve read approximately 150% in the past eight years. The reason it isn’t such a big deal in Europe is they have infrastructure already in place to deal with this - we don’t.

I feel the oil situation globally is quite simple - it’s running out - in other words, the supply is going down. So the oil companies are making a killing with their prices. The increased demand in China and India, plus the instability in the ME, are causing the price increases.

While I’d like to blame Bush solely for this, coupled with the fact that his negotiation skills are worse than a 12 year old, it’s not alone his fault - it’s the American consumer’s fault for not altering their lifestyles to deal with the situation and until that happens, nothing will change.

The thing that worries me is the increase of electricity prices as we all are now looking to hybrid vehicles. That’s just as bad for everyone too.

My solution, you know, if I were in charge, would be to give absolutely no more money to make driving convenient to the sole driver, but rather find better solutions for mass transit, and creating communities that are more bike friendly, and hell, even more golf cart friendly. I’ve always wanted a golf cart, even though I think the game is boring.

{{{Why is it that the average car in Japan gets 44 mpg? In Europe, cars average 36 mpg and in the US, our cars average 24 mpg!}}}

2 reasons. Their laws are different and they were paying the prices we’re seeing at the pump 15 years ago. Supply/demand. Simple (for rational people, anyway).

{{{Why is it that Flex Fuels are just NOW being intorduced in the United States, yet Flex Fuels have been in Brazil for OVER 20 years!}}} See above.

{{{Go watch “Who Killed the Electric Car?”}}} Should I watch farenheight 9/11 too? I’m sure they’re both equally objective and fact filled.

{{{Eight years ago I drove an EV-1 and it was an AMAZING car, but they don’t exist anymore because GM took them all to the deserts of Arizona and CRUSHED all of them!!!}}} So George Bush is making decisions for GM on what vehicles they build? Who’s telling Kia, Honda, and Toyota what to build? Are these foreign companies under his influence too or are you just plain stupid?

{{{Oh yeah….. I’m just a “Conspiracy Crazy.”}}} Agreed!

Hey dunce. California can’t produce enough electricity to keep their lights on TODAY. What will happen when 2 million cars get plugged into the grid for a recharge? Where is all that energy going to come from? Do you not also know that coal, which fuels many of these power plants, is going up too? Also because of demand in China and India.

Do you all still believe “fossil” fuels are from the decayed matter of a bunch of dead dinosaurs? There must have been one hell of a lot of dinosaurs to have produced all this oil we’ve been burning for the last 100 years. Gee, I wonder why we don’t find more dinosaur remains if there were so many? Or maybe it wasn’t dinosaurs, it was a bunch of other animals? So where are their fossils?

And wouldn’t you expect to find all the oil in places that can actually support all those animals who are now dead and decayed and not in the middle east where nothing lives?

Or did those areas once support life and now they can’t? If that’s the case, is George Bush responsible for that climate change too or was climate change going on long before our industrial revolution came along?

Surely you’ll be able to find a scientific answer to these questions. Good luck!

So, the middle east was a rain forest millions of years ago? What happened? Careful, you don’t want to admit the earths climate might change without man’s influence…

I was just wondering… If I took all of the vegetation in an existing rain forest and put it all in one big pile, how much oil could it produce? Surely it can’t produce more than it’s own volume, right? So how many times has this rain forest that covered the middle east been a rain forest, been covered up a thousand feet deep with sand, been a rain forest again, and been covered up again to produce all this oil?

GM spent over one BILLION dollars designing and creating the EV-1, but there were others at GM who thought the company could make MORE money with another vehicle, so when they killed the EV-1 program, they started a NEW program callled….. HUMMER.

It’s not all bad news though, for example….. The Toyota Prius would not exist if not for GM’s EV-1. Toyota was so worried about the EV-1 they started the Prius to compete with GM’s electric car.

Eventually, we will have Plug-in Hybrids combining the best technology of electric cars with the best technology of hybrid cars!

I too would hate to see that (shriveled up like a soccer ball), which is why I advocate we get off our a*******es and start using renewable sources.

As I said earlier, I feel the “fault” of oil prices falls on the shoulders of the American consumer. Just because we are tapping into new discovered resources won’t change the addiction problem, that’s like a heroin addict finding a new stash somewhere.

Simply because there is newly discovered oil doesn’t change the fact that it too will eventually run out. If we’d listened to Carter 30 years ago, we’d be well on our way to other ways, more cleaner ways, more ways that do not cause wars (hopefully) of dealing with our energy needs.

There are no guarantees that our oil supplies will be used here, we’ve allowed politicians to screw us.
