Woooooooo Hooooooo!!!

{{{{ABCNews’ Mary Bruce Reports: Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is actively courting the Vice Presidential nomination, according to Republican Strategist Dan Senor. “Condi Rice has been actively, actually in recent weeks, campaigning for this,” Senor said this morning on “This Week with George Stephanopoulos.”}}}}

Yes!!

~~~~~
{{{{Campaign trail turns to Iraq: THE ISSUES- U.S. losses: The war has taken the lives of more than 4,000 U.S. troops and wounded nearly 30,000.-Urinal}}}}
It seems to me that if the liberals are going to use this opportunity to point out the casualty rate in Iraq, something that Patreaus has reduced during his implementation of the “surge,” then I get to point out that 59,000 soldiers died in Vietnam, a war that the dimokrats escalated and then they surrendered to the enemy, thereby completely wasting the lives of all those brave men.
Why are they trying so hard now to waste the sacrifice of the 4000?
~~~~~

{{{{Meanwhile, the Klintons also made liberal use of the charitable deduction, claiming $10.2 million in charitable giving over the eight years. Intriguingly, nearly all the donations went to the KKKlinton Family Foundation, which has disbursed only half the money. The KKKlintons can thus use the foundation for, er, strategic giving, such as the $100,000 it donated last year to a local South Carolina library - the day after Mrs. Klinton debated in that key primary state. There are other examples of such politically targeted philanthropy, and it’s worth noting that most of the foundation’s disbursements came only after Mrs. Ku Klux Rodham announced her Presidential run.}}}}

They force you to pay more taxes but here they are taking advantage of a tax shelter and using “contributions to charity” to pay freaking political bribes.

Like I was saying:

{{{{For myself, I watched the Basra dust-up from Panama, amazed at the willful obtuseness of “war correspondents” who still refuse to acknowledge basic military realities. They demanded a level of effectiveness from Iraqi troops that the British had been unable (and unwilling) to deliver over the last five years.}}}}

{{{{Unlike the Brits, who faked it, the Iraqis went into the city and fought. Was their performance perfect? Of course not. But this is where the punditry got really interesting.}}}}

{{{{Many of the critics had previously lavished praise on the counterinsurgency manual that Petraeus midwifed. One of the most-quoted maxims from that document was T.E. Lawrence’s admonition that it’s better for our local allies to do something imperfectly themselves than for us to do it perfectly for them.}}}}

{{{{Well, the Iraqis stepped up to the plate. A few units folded. Others fought ferociously. They did what we said we wanted - and the critics raised the bar again. (Unfair criteria for success now may pose a greater obstacle in Iraq and Afghanistan than do al Qaeda or the Taliban.)}}}}

Hey, Andi, why don’t you go to Iraq and contribute to the surge, if you’re so gun ho for it? I’ve got a son over there right now, and I don’t even support the war. Seems like there is a little something that a true patriot like you could do other than stealing the thoughts of others.

They always say the apple falls close to the tree but in this case, it looks like the son is smarter, braver and a whole lot less wormy than the father is.

But you go right ahead, mountain dumbas-s, give aid and comfort to your son’s enemies, give them a reason to fight on hoping that the surrender monkey’s in America can win battles for them that they cannot win on the battlefield, put your son’s life at greater risk.

Dr. John Ehrenberg, WHO adviser on malaria and other parasitic diseases, said unchecked human development has contributed to the problem. That includes deforestation and an unprecedented level of human migration. As people move, so do diseases.

Proceed with caution I say. Land is also a finite resource. Do we plant it to feed people or do we use it to plant fuel crops.

I like this new microbial research or the garbage to fuel concept. Use something besides the resources that are essential to mankind.

Entire ecosystems have been lost.

The only county out of 153 in the state to be outright banned from hosting any of the events of the 1996 Summer Games. Turns out they had a little problem with their homophobia.

And just a few days ago one of their typically idiotic representatives got chastised publicly by the House Speaker for trying to slip in an anti-abortion clause in the pending dog collar legislation.

What a maroon.

And who could forget this little gem from their High school Biology classes?

“This text book contains material on evolution. Evolution is a theory, not a fact, regarding the origin of living things. This material should be approached with an open mind, studied carefully and critically considered.”

Many of the people in the third world are like neo-cons, they can’t see the big picture.

And in some cases they have yet to even learn, that it is irresponsible to destroy the very things, such as the natural resources, they desperately need.

But then they have generally, unlike their ignorant and rapacious American counter-parts, never had the chance to learn how to better provide for themselves. And in such a way that they don’t run the risk of ruining forever what they cannot replace.

Some of the poorest do it out of misguided need. Unlike the corporate wh0res, pollution lovers and ostrich-like man-induced global warming naysayers who do it out of avarice and a consuming hatred for all things they consider “liberal”.

Actually the “star dust” was made when a past massive star went super nova casting out its heavier elements and creating even heavier elements than iron during the explosion. This exists even today when we observe supernova remnants today such as the crab nebula, Tycho’s Nova , etc.

{{{On average, supernovae occur about once every 50 years in a galaxy the size of the Milky Way and play a significant role in enriching the interstellar medium with heavy elements. Furthermore, the expanding shock waves from supernova explosions can trigger the formation of new stars.}}}

Saw a political cartoon today, guy reading a paper, says to his wife “I’ve had it! I’m not buying anything else from China!” She says “good luck.” Everything in the house is labeled “made in China.”

It’s not just the shareholders of Walmart. People complain about job outsourcing, etc, then buy the low price. Consistently. So it’s middle America, too.

I too don’t understand about the global warming advocates not taking a hard line on China. Seems more shameless to me than the farconservatives using a different standard for China than the Soviet Union. Soviets threatened Western Europe, had a decades-long history of “we will bury you” rhetoric. China - more benign, in that context.

But the record’s been there for a while, including discussions on difficulties with caps, etc given China’s record. But nary a peep on doing anything substantive.

IThN

The one word is germane only to the context of the article. We had quite an exchange when you first posted Webb’s call for increased benefits. I pointed out much nonsupport is because of impact upon retention; Webb’s deriding of current GI Bill as “peacetime” when original was designed as a peacetime bill; that, tied into Webb’s regular “back door” approach to trying to exert any influence over the conduct of the Iraq war, given the Dem leadership’s failure - well, just seems to me another example of the farleft not being able to have an honest policy dispute with anyone (how Obama and McCain have spoken of conducting the election) - instead, it’s “you disagree with me, you’re evil, heartless and an idiot.”

It really isn’t so difficult to see why many on this blog deride proclamations of tolerance, is it? (Pointing out similar egregious examples from the farright isn’t an excuse-)

I don’t see it as being in lockstep (and agree it’s healthy to not be) but he has called for a different concept, not just a specific example, in political conduct. So just as McCain strongly condemned the “Hussein” intro person Obama condemned Ed’s remarks. BTW - when it came to warmonger controversy, when I read Ed’s response on getting challenged on his use of the word it was along the line of , well, this is how I define the word, so…

Heston could laugh at himself - an ability all too rare with many celebrities. Remember the Planet of the Apes remake? When Heston as the old “warmonger” was on his deathbed and his kid wanted his gun? And there came that famous line? The audience howled at that.

Speaking of taking on corporate types - Heston did. I’m sure you’re familiar with Heston criticizing Time Warner for promoting “music” because it was profitable - and how after he read some lyrics the press said they couldn’t print them. But Time Warner was selling them to kids.

The episode is included in a speech he gave, reprinted here:

Paul, I kinda liked old Charlton.

Earlier in life he was pretty “liberal”:

Heston campaigned for Presidential candidate Adlai Stevenson in 1956 and John F. Kennedy in 1960. When an Oklahoma movie theater premiering his movie was segregated, he joined a picket line outside in 1961. During the civil rights march held in Washington, D.C. in 1963, he accompanied Martin Luther King Jr. In later speeches, Heston said he helped the civil rights cause, “long before Hollywood found it fashionable.”

Following the assassination of Senator Robert F. Kennedy in 1968, Heston and actors Gregory Peck, Kirk Douglas and James Stewart issued a statement calling for support of President Johnson’s Gun Control Act of 1968.

And I always cut him some slack because he was no chickenhawk (two years as a B-25 radio operator/gunner), like his buddy Ronnie RayGun, who he drank much KoolAid with later in life.

Thanks very much for fleshing him out. I don’t agree with some of his later activities, but so what? He did some things I consider wonderful, others I’m not so enthusiastic about. It’s the same with politicians - you kinda weigh them in the scale and see how it looks. His earlier work, as you cited, paints him as more complicated (and human) than many of the caricatures celebrating his passing.

Saw an article in a Sunday paper - relates to those with the “well if you support the war how come your kid isn’t in it, huh?” Seems McCain’s son enlisted in the Marines at 17 (and told his dad about it later). Been in Iraq, supports the effort. But the article noted McCain ducks questions about it, doesn’t want to use his son for political purposes. I find that admirable.

I fundamentally disagree with the Senator from Arizona about the occupation, but find him to be the most palatable big-time Republican in a VERY long time.

He refuses to deny some very basic things - the theory of evolution and the belief in man-induced global warming for instance. Though not that big of a deal to most rational people, it is nonetheless a refreshing change among these ever-worsening GOP neo-cons.

Paul, and if McCain continues to distance himself politically from the Hannity’s, O’Reillys, Coulters, Limbaughs, Robertsons et al, he has one helluva chance of residing at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue next January.

It appears, and I really do hope, that he is smart enough to not chase off most, if not all of the independents, moderates and centrists who will otherwise vote for him by pandering to the “base”.

And trust me they are watching for the signs and awaiting his next big chance to demonstrate, or not, his non neo-conservative streak - when he names his Veep choice.

Given his age, that may just be make or break for him.
