McCain gets defense firm cash after helpful comments. Last year, Sen. John McCain’s (R-AZ) campaign advisers “lobbied for a European plane maker that beat Boeing to a $35 billion” contract, which Boeing advocates say McCain helped make possible. Huffington Post is now reporting that the day after McCain “formally called for multiple bidders in the tanker deal,” contributions from the Northrop Grumman/EADS consortium “began to flow” his way.

The Spitzer issue has me troubled a bit. I know what he was doing is wrong and he should resign but WHY were the Feds looking in his direction? I’ve heard that $5000 money transfers got him caught. Is that true? Lots of people move $5000 around so why was he ‘picked’ for this operation? I’m sure there are lots of men of high income and position (by this I mean either business or political) that pay high priced call girls the same way. Why weren’t they caught up in this? It just doesn’t pass the sniff test to me. There is something more to this and it being an election year I’m sure has something to do with it. So let him resign in disgrace but I think we should also ask the question why him and why now.

{{{{David Mamet: Why I Am No Longer a ‘Brain-Dead Liberal’-Village Voice}}}
{{{{The play, while being a laugh a minute, is, when it’s at home, a disputation between reason and faith, or perhaps between the conservative (or tragic) view and the liberal (or perfectionist) view. The conservative president in the piece holds that people are each out to make a living, and the best way for government to facilitate that is to stay out of the way, as the inevitable abuses and failures of this system (free-market economics) are less than those of government intervention.}}}}

The stereotype of a cranky old man, set in his ways, getting more conservative by the day, is an enduring one. But new research has debunked the myth that people become more conservative as they age. By comparing surveys of various age groups taken over a span of more than 30 years, sociologists found that in general, Americans’ opinions veer toward the liberal as they grow older. “All the evidence we have found refutes the idea that as people age their attitudes become more conservative or more rigid,” said Nicholas Danigelis, a sociologist at the University of Vermont. “It’s just not true. More people are changing in a liberal direction than in a conservative direction.”

Cause and effect? Or the standard practice of donating to any politician who is, or who might be, in a position that will affect their interests?
Don’t forget - the documentation shows the AF planned to “lease” 100 tankers from Boeing (a plan, BTW, that went against existent policy concerning leasing) when McCain intervened. A top Air Force official went to prison. Now, years later, following standard procedures, the AF is buying nearly twice that number - for the same price.
So, bottom line - what’s your point - that big-ticket defense acquisitions should remain US-only, in effect another domestic corporate welfare program, regardless of the negative impact on America’s defense capability or the impact on soldiers?
Northrop-Grumman/EADS provided more military capability at lower cost. They did it with a political concession to assemble the aircraft in Alabama. Washington state politicians, where Boeing assembles aircraft, lost.
Care to post another link showing if any Boeing dollars “flowed” to Washington’s Senators and Congressmen?

Don’t have a hypertext link as I read it in the newspaper this morning - evidently Spitzer had a number of transactions where he split transfers to less than $10,000 - by law, banks have to report transfers of over $10,000. When the bank questioned him, he asked the bank to take his name off the transfers. The bank declined.

How about a link stating the number of times NBC’s and ABC’s morning and evening news shows identified Gov Spitzer as a Democrat? Can’t find one? Maybe it’s because there aren’t any! How about CBS? Hillary will be seated as the nominee. She will win with the super delegates. Obama should write another book about the dem’s identity politics & racial intolerance when the dust settles.
African Americans comprised nearly half of the Democratic vote in Mississippi — and 90% of those voters, according to exit polls, pulled the lever for Obama, his strongest showing yet among African Americans. But Obama did poorly among whites, winning only 30%, according to exit polls. While this split was visible in Alabama and the border state of Tennessee earlier this year, it was visible in Ohio’s primary last week, too.
Mississippi is one of the most reliably Republican states in presidential elections. Only a Democrat who could win 35 to 40% of the white vote, while holding onto a lopsided percentage of blacks, could put the state in play in a head to head match with a Republican in the fall. Obama’s 30% showing in the primary against Clinton falls short of that target.

13 % of Republicans voted for Hillary today…….and she still didn’t win….but this is why her numbers were so high among Whites in Mississippi…………..
As I wrote HERE, Barack Obama’s performance on March 4th represented a real loss in support among non-Democrats who up until last week had tended to support him over Hillary Clinton by fairly large margins. We’re seeing the same thing in Mississippi today.
According to CNN’s exit poll, 13% of those that voted in the MS Democratic primary today were Republicans and they went for Hillary Clinton by a huge margin of 77-23%. Among independents who voted in the Democratic primary today, Clinton loses only by a slight 48-51% margin. These results represent a phenomenal improvement for Clinton among these groups as compared to her overall pre-March 4 results when she lost among Republicans 29-64% and among Independents 36-56% (h/t Open Left.)
The real story here is Clinton’s performance among Republicans though. This is the first open primary since John McCain secured the nomination, so it makes sense that they would participate in the Democratic primary in larger than normal numbers (Republicans represented about 9% of the Dem primary electorate in the last 3 open contests in Wisconsin, Texas and Ohio) but going for Hillary by more than 50%? What made her Republican support in TX and Ohio so surprising was that she had closed the gap to a single digit deficit or a tie, but here she is well ahead. I was skeptical of the right-wing campaign to turn out for Hillary Clinton so that the battle for the Democratic nomination would drag out even longer, supposedly meant to help John McCain (John, who?), but today’s results make it difficult to ignore. Although, the more insidious side of what may have motivated these Republicans to vote for Hillary against Barack is that the racist vote may have been alive and well. The electorate was deeply polarized along racial lines (90% of black voters went for Barack, 73% of white voters went for Clinton) in Mississippi today and I don’t think it’s entirely unrelated that the exit polling The AP did show Clinton benefiting from a distinctly anti-Obama sentiment.
—[Just] 4 in 10 Clinton voters said she should pick Obama as her running mate if she wins.

Listening to MSNBC and James Carville last night…most of them said that Spitzer need not resign, that it was a victimless crime and a personal matter (like WJClinton). Please…lest we forget that the rise to power as govenor was built around the AG position of cleaning up illegal activities, like prostitution…all the while, participating in said ILLEGAL activity. The media collectively decided to give McCain a pass, the senator made a half-hearted effort to distance himself from some of Hagee’s comments, and McCain critics had no choice but to give up on making this an important part of the campaign. But before we can move on in earnest, McCain’s latest explanation for his relationship really deserves a closer look.

It’s tough to think of two states more different than Wyoming and Mississippi.
But we won Wyoming on Saturday, and we won Mississippi by a large margin yesterday.
Between those two states, we picked up enough delegates to erase the gains by Senator Clinton last Tuesday and add to our substantial lead in earned delegates. And in doing so we showed the strength and breadth of this movement.
But just turn on the news and you’ll see that Senator Clinton continues to run an expensive, negative campaign against us. Each day her campaign launches a new set of desperate attacks.
They’re not just attacking me; they’re attacking you.
Over the weekend, an aide to Senator Clinton attempted to diminish the overwhelming number of contests we’ve won by referring to places we’ve prevailed as “boutique” states and our supporters as the “latte-sipping crowd.”
I’m not sure how those terms apply to Mississippi and Wyoming — or Virginia, Iowa, Louisiana, or Idaho for that matter.
I know that our victories in all of these states demonstrate a rejection of this kind of petty, divisive campaigning.
But the fact remains that Senator Clinton’s campaign will continue to attack us using the same old Washington playbook. And now that John McCain is the Republican nominee, we are forced to campaign on two fronts.
It’s up to you to fight back. Please make a donation of $25 today:

The issue is whether or not the mainstream media treat Democrats and Republicans in the same circumstance, equitably.
From my 8:46: “…the number of times NBC’s and ABC’s morning and evening news shows identified Gov Spitzer as a Democrat? …there aren’t any! How about CBS? …maybe one instance. Possibly you could run a comparison with the reporting for Larry Craig?”
The reporting is usually couched in the context many of these Reps ran as family-values candidates, so it’s appropriate. Gov Spitzer ran as the morality guy, so it also is appropriate. But the party references are woefully lacking.
Not that they should be an issue, but the mainstream media have already set the standard that it is.
Remember what you said a few days ago about the number of people who think there was an al Qaeda/Hussein operational link? So how on earth can you make a comment that people outside NY would know Gov Spitzer’s party affiliation?

Paul and ITN,
I find it useful never to trust anyone who brings up morals in an election. In my opinion, they are the ones you have to watch out for. Morals should be a given, and I really don’t need anyone telling me what is moral and what isn’t.

Now about that $200 billion in credit facilities offered to our banking system to loosen the credit markets a little. Where do you think that maoney comes from? Uncle Sam doesn’t happen to have a spare $200 billion sitting idle in a savings account somewhere. Oops, a Euro now costs us $1.55 today. Result—two all nighters, that’s three days straight, of Bob and me seeding puff pieces on Lt. Gov. Magoo. On the weekend I don’t think either one of us could even name the Lietenant Governor of this state, and as of press time yesterday we could have told you more about David A. Seems like that ought to be Dean’s problem to worry about. Maybe he’s doing the same thing, I don’t know. Anyway it’s been an easy sell as usual. Your first paragraph opens up a bag of worms. Well, there’s illegal, then there’s illegal. Many archaic laws on the books. The ones you cite - usually used to prosecute johns or gays. Fortunately the courts are overturning such prosecutions on privacy grounds.
Regarding the other - more of our foreign friends? When will the piper get paid? Sometime after the current crop of politicians leave office, I’ll wager. I feel sorry for the coming generations. “We“‘ve left them quite the mess. Pity is, a little compromise and giving up a little to benefit others could have great long-term effects (a criticism I have of Obama and Social Security).

Boy, didn’t oil prices plummet when the dimwits in charge of our great country introduced their marvelous “cafe” standards, we really showed them Arabs:
{{{{OPEC’s present market power dates to early 1999, says economist Verleger. Oil prices then were about $10 a barrel. The 1997-98 Asian financial crisis had cut demand; supply was essentially unregulated. Saudi Arabia undertook frantic negotiations with other major producers, including Iran, Kuwait, Venezuela and non-OPEC members Russia, Norway and Mexico. The result was an agreement to cut production sharply. Compliance with output quotas was surprisingly good; countries were terrified by the collapse of their oil revenues.}}}}
{{{{By doing so little to check its own thirst for imports, the United States has contributed to OPEC’s present triumph. The extent of that triumph will be tested this year and next. Non-OPEC oil supplies — from Brazil, Canada and Kazakhstan, among other places — will increase. Meanwhile, a weaker global economy may dampen demand. Even OPEC may be unable to hold prices at today’s high levels. Whatever happens, the long-term threat of a global oil cartel will remain. We should be taking the hard steps to limit its power. Considering our past complacency, we probably won’t.}}}}

And it’s just going to keep getting funnier.
While Dems were arguing over who got suckered instead of taking responsibility for their Iraq votes, and while they were trying to one-up each other over who was going to “really” withdraw (notice how that’s forgotten, now?), McCain was a tireless critic of the Bush Iraq strategy and offered alternative strategies.
If developed, that concept could cause the Democratic nominee a bit of a problem. After a few months the cry “McCain = Bush” wears thin as people think beyond the sound bites.

Paul:
I just read your response to me on yesterday’s thread. I was NOT having fun with the “Obama Blows HIS Nose” video.
Barack In The Day Long before Obama ran for president, he was a state senator in Illinois. Here’s what he did.
The morning after the story was posted online, I arrived early at my new offices. I hadn’t taken my coat off when the phone rang. It was Obama.
The article began, “It can be painful to hear Ivy League-bred Barack Obama talk jive.”
Obama told me HE doesn’t speak jive, that HE doesn’t say the words “homeboy” or “peeps.”
It seemed so silly; I thought for sure HE was joking. HE wasn’t.
HE said the black legislators I cited in the story were off-base and that they couldn’t have gotten the bills passed without HIM.
I started to speak, and HE shouted me down.
HE said he liked the other story I wrote.
I asked if there was anything factually inaccurate about the latest story.
HE repeated that his former colleagues couldn’t have passed the bills without him.
HE asked why I wrote this story, then cut me off when I started to answer.
HE said he should have been given a chance to respond.
Obama looks less and less like “the breath of fresh air” and more and more like a politician who will step over his own to get to where HE aspired to be.
((Jones appointed Obama sponsor of virtually every high-profile piece of legislation, angering many rank-and-file state legislators who had more seniority than Obama and had spent years championing the bills.))
((“I took all the beatings and insults and endured all the racist comments over the years from nasty Republican committee chairmen,” state Sen. Rickey Herndon, the original sponsor of landmark legislation that dealt with racial profiling and videotaped confessions, complained to me at the time. It was yanked away by Jones and given to Obama. “Barack didn’t have to endure any of it,” Herndon said. “Yet, in the end, he got all the credit.”))
((“I don’t consider it bill-jacking,” Herndon told me. “But no one wants to carry the ball 99 yards all the way to the 1-yard line, and then give it to the halfback who gets all the credit and the stats in the record book.”))
Hankerchief smankerchief…Obama may as well have blown a big booger at those attending HIS rally.

And the markets rebounded temporarily so that what, America’s wealthiest people can gradually sell off their holdings now without experiencing the pain of the sudden drop in the market. Now it will drop more slowly?
Next you’re going to tell me that the economy is just fine…that it will only go into recession if the idiot liberals keep saying it will; a self-fulfilling prophecy? Nothing to do with the price of oil that Bush said he could manage because Saudi Arabia is his friend. Nothing to do with the government spending more money than it brings in. Here’s a nice running mate for SEN. John McCain…..
(CNN) – Jack Kevorkian, the assisted suicide advocate currently on parole from prison, is planning a run for Congress, a Detroit newspaper reported Wednesday.
According to the Oakland Press, Kevorkian is planning to mount an independent bid in Michigan’s 9th District seat currently occupied by Republican Joe Knollenberg.
“We need some honesty and sincerity instead of corrupt government in Washington,” Kevorkian told the paper. He also said his plans are in the “formative stage” and he would make a formal announcement next week.
The one-time pathologist needs to gather 3,000 signatures in order to appear on the ballot as an independent candidate.
Kevorkian has said he has helped well over 100 people die during the 1990s. In 1998, he was formally convicted on second degree homicide for assisting in the death of Thomas Youk, who suffered from Lou Gehrig’s disease.
He was released from prison on parole in June.
Oakland County Prosecutor Dave Gorcyca, who was responsible for sending Kevorkian to jail, told the paper he thinks the candidacy is merely a “publicity stunt.” Rep. Knollenberg’s office is refusing to comment on the story. CNN has been unable to get a comment from Kevorkian.

I, for one, am sick and tired of the scribbler always hammering on Democrats! When is he going to make fun of that dufus in the white house or the other innumerable corrupt Republicans?
(Just doing my “conservative” blogger imitation!). Speaking of which, they have suddenly gone very silent on that particular topic, no?
I still chuckle at this quaint notion that the contest between Obama and Clinton somehow helps the GOP. How exactly is that so? Just remember this “analysis” is brought to you by the crowd that blames “variations in the sun’s temperature” as the reason for global warming!
It is unquestionably a worst-case scenario for the fake conservatives. Not one of their brain-dead candidates could beat the moderate McCain.
And then the demonized Sen. Clinton who they desperately needed to win the Dem ticket, so as to energize the “base”, is apparently headed for a defeat.
And even our always progressive (HA!) southern “conservatives” dare not make too big a deal out of that nice, young, eloquent mulatto.
Yes, so for the GOP “faithful”, no matter how they twist in the wind and no matter how they spin it, are hopelessly screwed this time around.
Too f@cking bad.

Have you ever heard of D-E-M-O-C-R-A-T-S?
Spitzer is a Democrat. Pelosi is a Democrat. She is the Democratic leader in the House of Representatives. (Spit out is ‘wordplay ’ on Spitzer. Duh!) Democratic leaders do NOT want Democrats to disgrace the party. So they try to forget such activity and do not want to mention it.
Spitzer disgraced his family, his state, his political party, and others who believed in their governor. Got it? Besides, it was probably illegal behavior in case you don’t know that.
Waxman wants to investigate every Republican on general principles. I thought he might like to investigate a Democrat’s procurement of prostitutes which is not model behavior.

Yes, I’m sure. The Republicans too, boy those Repub leaders have been very very busy trying to forget such activities of THEIR party members. Whew! A Republican leader trying to keep the cover on a scandals work is never done!
But in all seriousness - I agree with you about Spitzer’s behavior - good thing he didn’t try to blame all this on his political enemies and just took it like a man and resigned.

Paul @ 2:56:
(((Well, he’s recrafted his image)))
I’ll see your “recrafted” and raise you a “crafty”.
You’re comparison to McCain made me laugh. McCain has been a maverick throughout his entire senatorial career. While I have differences with him on some issues, his disdain for government waste in pork barrel spending isn’t one of them. You know the guy who launched Obama to stardom, Emil Jones, Jr…….the guy Obama calls his “Political Godfather”?
This is how he paid Jones back for his “starburst”:
(((Last June, to prove his commitment to government transparency, Obama released a comprehensive list of his earmark requests for fiscal year 2008. It comprised more than $300 million in pet projects for Illinois, including tens of millions for Jones’ Senate district.)))
(((Shortly after Jones became Senate president, I remember asking his view on pork-barrel spending.)))
(((I’ll never forget what he said:
“Some call it pork; I call it steak.”)))
I’m pretty sure it was included in my previous link. If not just Google Jones’s response.
Bosch @ 3:19:
(((Don’t you think the biggest problem you have with Obama is the fact that there is a (D) that comes after his name?)))
Why can’t you be honest with your question? That’s what you think I think. It was your “oh so subtle” incrimination of me without basis in fact.
I’ve voted for candidates with a (D) after their name on many occasions - national, state and local.
What doesn’t sit well with me is a candidate who “builds” his platform on CHANGE while the foundation on which it was built appears to be anything but.
You might have missed it…scratch that, you DID MISS IT! I was defending those (D) legislators in Illinois who he pulled the rug out from under.
I don’t like injustice Bosch. I don’t like this game of Obama doing unto others and then crying foul when it’s done unto him. It leaves the playing field unlevel which is something else he promotes

For those of you who are screaming against the rising cost of oil. Here’s some possibilities you might want to consider. I remember stumbling on this story last year:
Ethanol Has OPEC Publicly Concerned
((Abdalla El-Badri, Secretary-General of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries [OPEC] said the biofuel strategy being pushed by President Bush and European leaders would backfire because “you don’t get the incremental oil and you don’t get the ethanol.”In this scenario, he warned, oil prices would go “through the roof.”))
((He said OPEC members had so far maintained their investment plans, but he warned: “If we are unable to see a security of demand … we may revisit investment in the long-term.” Why the change? In the past OPEC had all but mocked biofuel’s potential. This is the first public expression of concern.))
The Big Green Fuel Lie
So tell me….do you ever feel like the “odd man out”?
I do my part. I conserve. It takes me a month to burn a tank of gas in my fuel efficient auto…….mobile. Right now it’s our only salvation (economically speaking.)
I watched a special on the History Channel last night. Depleting oil supplies, growing global demand and Democrats and Republicans alike failed to see the writing on the wall?
Sure they did. They just needed to prime the pumps for the money grab.
It all started in 1979 when Carter was President. What did President Carter propose? Nuclear energy. Who objected? Environmentalists who terrorized the public against agreeing to do what needed to be done.

For all you conspiratorial paranoid liberals who think Fallon’s abrupt resignation was because he wasn’t on board to attack Iran. Think again…
((But this was not a one-way vector, and the jihadist insurgency in Afghanistan spilled over into Pakistan, where the insurgency is not only operating from a comparative safe haven, but is compounding political instability in Islamabad and exacerbating the tensions within Pakistani society.))
((Under Fallon’s tenure, in other words, if it did not all come crashing down, it certainly did become apparent to everyone in Washington that the persistent stalemates that had been easy enough to ignore thus far — the military stalemate in Afghanistan and the political stalemate in Pakistan — had become unacceptable and unsustainable.))
((Fallon’s “resignation” was about these very unaddressed problems. Stratfor’s strategic perspective does not often fall to individuals; we see larger forces at work in the world. Fallon did not matter. But the empty seat at CENTCOM is likely to be an exception. Not simply because it is one of the most crucial posts in the U.S. military today, but because of the shift in focus Fallon’s removal entails and especially because of the two individuals at the top of the list to replace him: Marine Corps Gen. James Mattis and Petraeus himself.))
Putting our best men forward in other words.
((Petraeus was one of the architects of the “surge” strategy and has overseen its successes thus far. He was also a principal force behind the Army’s new counterinsurgency manual. Mattis is something of a legend in the Marines. Not only did he lead Task Force 58 into Afghanistan in 2001, he commanded the 1st Marine Division in Iraq and later the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force during the surge. Petraeus and Mattis worked closely on the new counterinsurgency manual.))
((The appointment of either man to the top post at CENTCOM has serious implications for the conduct of operations in Afghanistan and the situation in Pakistan. No two contenders for the job are more likely to forgo the current stalemate in Afghanistan and come at the problem with renewed intensity. Indeed, it is the first real telling potential shift in the command of Afghan operations, perhaps since 2001. And neither contender is likely to sit by and let Pakistan continue to simmer, either.))

LT. GEN. MARTIN DEMPSEY, Fallon’s temporary replacement ain’t too shabby either.
I loved the part about the fatwah.
(((This year, we also informed both Iraqi ministries that in the future, the coalition would only provide fuel to the ISF in extremis. We saw that the Iraqi system was capable of providing fuel to its forces, but it was much easier for Iraqi commanders to go to their American counterparts and say “I’d love to go on a mission with you, but I need fuel.” So we’ve gone from providing 60 percent of the fuel for the ISF to under 10 percent today.)))
(((When I congratulated Iraqi officials at a recent meeting for stepping up, they said there was no choice in the matter because ——>I had issued a “Dempsey fatwa!” I told them if I knew earlier that was all it took, then I would have issued the fatwa much sooner.<——)))

Alright which one of you liberals blew up the military recruitment center in NYC.
They’re finding striking similarities to past groups within a movement called Black Bloc
(((A black bloc is a nebulous entity that has no centralized command and control structure, similar to organizations such as the Earth Liberation Front and the Animal Liberation Front. Instead, activists who join black bloc groups usually also participate in other more benign activist organizations and affinity groups. Because a black bloc is not a formal organization, there is no clear definition of its ideology. However, ——>individuals who participate in black bloc actions are typically anti-capitalism, anti-globalization and anti-war and often identify themselves as anarchists. Overall, they oppose “authoritarianism,” which they believe is present throughout modern society.<——)))
