Governor of Alaska, potential Republican vice president.
{{{{CALLER: Yep. She’s been heralded throughout the state as being personable, likable, intelligent, strong, and conservative. {{{{RUSH: Yeah, plus she’s a housewife, before that, she’s a babe. I saw a picture.}}}}
{{{{CALLER: (laughing)}}}}
{{{{RUSH: Well, it’s undeniable.}}}}
{{{{CALLER: Well, it is undeniable, and that’s why the paradox is there for me. I think that because she’s intelligent, number one, conservative maybe number one also, but she is photogenic, she is likable, she is engaging. When you meet her, she is interested in you, she speaks well.}}}}
{{{{RUSH: By the way, wait a second. I’m not diminishing any of those things by pointing out that she’s a babe.}}}}
{{{{CALLER: Oh, no, no, no.}}}}
{{{{RUSH: The babe is the icing on the cake aspect, something the Democrats can’t claim on their side.}}}}
{{{{CALLER: Exactly, especially when the highest Democrat that you can speak of is Mrs. Bill Clinton.}}}}
{{{{RUSH: (laughing) You said it, not I. I just advanced the theory.}}}}
{{{{CALLER: Well, I can tell you that Governor Palin doesn’t have to lift her chin up to 12 o’clock to get a good photo of her.}}}}

Another spot-on cartoon. The right wing can’t even TRY to brag about McCain, because so many conservatives hate him.
And unlike with Hillary, they can’t find any scandals or ‘baggage’ to attack Obama with. What’s left?
Why, childish insults and desperate background digging, of course… in the hopes of turning up SOMETHING to use against this guy. Because they certainly can’t promote their own candidate—all they know how to do is attack, in the silliest manner possible.
It’s sooooo transparent… and best of all, it’s sooooo not working! The Repugs are DOOMED and they know it.

I guess we should blame the Demoncrats for the fact that our servicemen and women are still in bases in England, Germany, Italy, Japan and Korea? There is hardly a quagmire. The surge strategy is working. I guess you folks on the left want to lose the war so you can win the presidency and then ruin the U.S. economy and then run us into the ground diplomatically and militarily. Many of you just cannot remember the Carter presidency! Obama will just be a repeat.
By the way, most Republicans have done their best NOT to mention the guys name. But if he doesn’t like it, why doesn’t he just change it?

O.K. ml, we’ll call him Barack H. Obama while likening him to John Fitzgerald Kennedy. His middle name is of no concern to me. It’s his “roundabout” rhetoric that causes me to worry.
I’m not the only one either — even some Democrat economists are beginning to say…..Huh?
“Threatening to repudiate international agreements would have serious foreign policy consequences which would undermine Mr Obama’s broader foreign policy goals,” says Susan Aaronson, professor at George Washington university and a former adviser to Bill Richardson, who dropped out of the race in January. “Some of this may be normal pandering for the primaries. But it has gone much further than expected.”
((Mr Obama’s proposal to levy lower corporate tax on companies that reverse the offshoring of jobs has caused disquiet. “Patriot employers” was unveiled when Mr Obama had already become the favourite to secure the nomination. Some say it is unworkable.))
((“It just isn’t clear why the Obama campaign felt the need to bring this out now,” one Democratic economist says. “It might have political merits in the primaries but there are many more effective and less bureaucratic ways than this to incentivise the creation of new jobs.”))
((Mr Obama’s terminology has also raised eyebrows. “What he is effectively saying is that companies that offshore jobs are unpatriotic,” says Gary Hufbauer, senior fellow at the Peterson Institute of International Economics. “This is serious language.”))
((Tacking to the left on the economy would be vindicated in the eyes of many if Mr Obama won in either Ohio or Texas next Tuesday. But officials on John McCain’s Republican campaign believe Mr Obama has given them ammunition for the general election.))
The more Obama talks, the more trouble he creates for himself in the general. Is this why he’s avoiding the press? To limit ammunition?

Sponsored by Defense of Democracies, a group with GOP connections, the ad takes the House to task for not passing the bill, as the Senate has. The ad appeals to fear, with its image of Osama bin Laden and similar ploys. But we find that it also makes several misleading claims.
Specifically, the ad says that:
•”The law” allowing government eavesdroppers to intercept al Qaeda communications has expired. But the main, 30-year-old law that lets them listen in, the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, is still on the books. It’s a law amending FISA, making it easier for intelligence-gatherers to eavesdrop on communications that might include Americans, that has expired.
•”[T]he House refuses to vote” to replace the lapsed law. Actually, the House passed its own version of the legislation months ago. The House and Senate are now in conference to resolve the differences in their bills, which is the normal legislative process.
•”[N]ew surveillance against terrorists is crippled.” The administration has admitted that surveillance authorized under the expired bill will extend at least into August. It has also admitted that when a new member of a known terrorist organization is discovered, that person can be surveilled via authorizations granted under the expired law. And at any rate, FISA itself hasn’t expired, and any time the government has strong evidence that someone is a member of a terrorist organization, it can still get a court order to eavesdrop on that person.

Predominantly Sunni forces in Iraq are so frustrated right now, many are abandoning their posts. Among their chief concerns are low salaries, late payments, and the fact that U.S. troops are accidentally killing many of the Awakening forces. The Washington Post’s Dana Milbank notes that Chief Justice John Roberts appeared “bothered” that Exxon might have to pay for its destruction:What bothered the chief justice was that Exxon was being ordered to pay $2.5 billion — roughly three weeks’ worth of profits — for destroying a long swath of the Alaska coastline in the largest oil spill in American history.”So what can a corporation do to protect itself against punitive-damages awards such as this?” Roberts asked in court.The lawyer arguing for the Alaska fishermen affected by the spill, Jeffrey Fisher, had an idea. “Well,” he said, “it can hire fit and competent people.”

* George Will really slammed John McCain today: “Although his campaign is run by lobbyists; and although his dealings with lobbyists have generated what he, when judging the behavior of others, calls corrupt appearances; and although he has profited from his manipulation of the taxpayer-funding system that is celebrated by reformers — still, he probably is innocent of insincerity. Such is his towering moral vanity, he seems sincerely to consider it theoretically impossible for him to commit the offenses of appearances that he incessantly ascribes to others. Such certitude is, however, not merely an unattractive trait. It is disturbing righteousness in someone grasping for presidential powers.”

If it’s not NAFTA that’s sending jobs to China, but an agreement “LIKE” NAFTA, what trade agreement is that, specifically? If the issue is jobs going to China, why wasn’t that agreement mentioned instead of NAFTA?
When US based companies are losing ground to foreign made products on pricing, what exactly is it you expect them to do? If they do nothing, they lose money and go out of business. They have to do something. What is that something?

I wonder how many of the bigoted Repugs know the translated meaning of Sen. Obama’s name given to him by his parents?
Barack translates to “blessed”… and Hussein translates as “handsome”… very appropriate names for our next American President, dontcha think?!!
Barack and Hussein are Semitic words. Americans have been named with Semitic names since the founding of the Republic. Fourteen of our 43 presidents have had Semitic names (see below). And, American English contains many Arabic-derived words that we use every day and without which we would be much impoverished. America is a world civilization with a world heritage, something Cunninghamism will never understand.

Why don’t they just say “our plan is to tax foreign made goods to make them more expensive for Americans to buy so American made goods are more competitive”. If that’s what they’re going to do, why not say that?

Many more American name translations for the bigots to think about — the informed link again:
Let us take Benjamin Franklin. His first name is from the Hebrew Bin Yamin, the son of the Right (hand), or son of strength, or the son of the South (yamin or right has lots of connotations). The “Bin” means “son of,” just as in modern colloquial Arabic. Bin Yamin Franklin is not a dishonorable name because of its Semitic root. By the way, there are lots of Muslims named Bin Yamin.
Also, feel free to look at the translated name for our American heroes such as Gen. Omar Bradley…

I don’t have any strong feelings either way about whether Drudge was good or evil for reporting that Prince Harry was in Afghanistan. Obviously there are times when news outlets should consider not reporting things, but on the other hand one gets a little uncomfortable when there’s a conspiracy of silence so large that it suggests that the media is simply an adjunct of the government or state.
Still, as others have suggested, if, say, the New York Times had broken this story it they would have been accused of painting a bulls eye on his head so The Terrorists could kill him faster.

IN THE (FAKE) NEWS - As long as I have been aware, the liberals have used fear and hatred to sell their nafarious message of socialism as “equality and fairness”, when it is neither. In the current campaign both Barak Obama and Hitlery Clintax are using fear to sell themselves - the economy is in the tank. The conservatives want to starve the poor/old/children, deprive them of health care and thrown them out in the streets!!
I remember John Lewis saying in the 1990s that “they (the Republicans) are comin’ for our chirren!”
We actually have something to fear from Islamic terrorists. The DemoNcrats are always manufacturing ghosts. You liberals are the supreme hypocrites.

{{{{In an interview with ABC News’ Cynthia McFadden to air on this evening’s “Nightline,” Sen. Ku Klux Rodham, D-N.Y., says it’s tougher for her to run as a woman than it is for her male opponent.}}}}

It is a good cartoon illustrating the blend of ad hominem attack and red herring which we will see much of in the presidential campaign from the GOP and their 527 chorus.
However, this time, unlike the Swift Boat liars club it may not work. The economy looks to be the main issue, rightly or wrongly, and a war once it has become unpopular, remains so.

Also CopyLeft, you talked about in your 10:22 post that Obama has no specifics. Can you explain to me why when his supporters are asked what he has accomplished they cannot answer? Is it because he hasn’t done anything or is it because he hasn’t focused on his record more?

Good Morning all:
Especially for WOOT, and others discussing the Bible here yesterday. Sorry for the delay; I had to consult my bookshelf. Feel free to pass on by if not interested…
Check out Hauer and Young’s “An Introduction to the Bible, A Journey into Three Worlds” (can be found on Amazon).
This excellent piece of Biblical Scholarship looks at the Holy Bible in three ways:
Text: What pictures are the stories trying to paint? Where else do these fables (my word) and symbols (e.g., the flood, a virgin birth) appear in cultural folklore? Frankly, what did Biblical authors steal from other cultures/belief systems?
Author/Audience: Examining writing styles, scholars have identified specific authors, and in some cases even made a hypothesis as to their identities. What audiences were they writing for? Great compare/contrast to the two versions of the Creation and different accounts of the Nativity.
Also, an excellent review of man-made embellishments to the Bible and Christian faith since the death of Jesus - including purposeful mis-attribution of some authorships (Paul) in order to lend credibility and weight to some of the writings, and the addition of symbolism like the virgin birth and star in the east (both stolen) to make the point that this was the birth of a Very Important Person.
Historical/Archeological corroboration: Were events in the Bible recorded in other, contemporary historical documents? If so, what is the quality of those historical accounts? Does archeological evidence support or cast doubt on those events?This book is a great secular read, even without cross-referencing Biblical passages. It gave me a greater understanding of the Bible for what it is: a work that has evolved and been massaged over the centuries. Did it weaken my faith? No.
But it sure gave my sweet little Pentecostal aunt fits!

Between 2001 and 2006, McCain contributed roughly $950,000 to the foundation. That accounted for all of its listed income other than for $100 that came from an anonymous donor. During that same period, the McCain foundation made contributions of roughly $1.6 million. More than $500,000 went to his kids’ private schools, most of which was donated when his children were attending those institutions. So McCain apparently received major tax deductions for supporting elite schools attended by his children.

We need Obama, people. America needs a leader. A leader is measured not by how much he leads, but by how much he is followed by others. There’s a undefinable quality about how a leader emerges, and that is directly proportional to the effect that the leader has on assemblies, the national conscience, and on the global zeitgeist. JFK’s vibe went to the corners of the earth. Obama’s vibe may spread even further. One man can make a difference, but only if he can get people to follow him.
Who would follow McCain? You would be afraid to go anywhere near that accident prone disaster-in-waiting. Hell, he set fire to an entire aircraft carrier and has never apologized, nor taken responsibility for it. “It wasn’t my fault” is all he has ever said, the dirty lying Saudi azz-kisser. McCain doesn’t even know that there’s a difference between sunni and shia islam. He has never wankapedia’d it. He’s never googoo-gaga’d it either. Will MSNBC devote as much coverage to McCain’s embrace of Hagee’s support as it did to Obama’s rejection of Farrakhan? Summary: On February 27, MSNBC devoted significant coverage to an exchange from the most recent Democratic presidential debate in which NBC Washington bureau chief Tim Russert repeatedly questioned Sen. Barack Obama about praise he received from controversial minister Louis Farrakhan, whose statements Obama has denounced. The same day, Pastor John Hagee — who has made controversial comments about homosexuality, Islam, Catholicism, and women — endorsed Sen. John McCain, who embraced Hagee’s support. Hagee’s endorsement and McCain’s response to it raise the question of whether MSNBC will report on them as extensively as it did on Farrakhan’s praise.

Bush Orders ‘Amnesty’ for Foreign-Born McCain by Scott Ott for ScrappleFace · 101 Comments
(2008-02-28) — President George Bush today signed an executive order granting ‘amnesty’ to foreign-born Sen. John McCain, allowing the presumptive Republican nominee to bypass the Constitutional requirement that a president be a “natural born citizen.”
John Sidney McCain III was born in the Panama Canal zone when his Naval officer father was stationed there in 1936. The Supreme Court has never definitively interpreted the phrase “natural born”, but no person known to be born outside U.S. borders has ever been elected president.
Under President Bush’s order, Sen. McCain would be granted an immediate ‘P visa’ allowing him to remain in the U.S., with ‘guest candidate’ status, as he works toward full presidential eligibility.
“My compassion moves me to create a legal path to the presidency for my amigo, John McCain,” said Mr. Bush. “Of course, he’ll need to pay a $2,000 fine, but he already speaks English better than some recent presidents.”

By Bush’s logic, Reagan “embraced” Saddam and lent Saddam the stature of the United States…………..I’d just add that Bush’s criticism of Obama’s approach is quite the political gift to the Democratic frontrunner. Americans are not only opposed to Bush’s Iraq policy, but generally disapprove of our diplomatic failures and the deterioration of our global standing. For the president to publicly denounce Obama’s beliefs about diplomacy only reinforces the belief that Obama is probably on the right track.

HOUSTON - Democrat Barack Obama accused rival Hillary Rodham Clinton on Friday of trying to “play on people’s fears to scare up votes” with a television ad showing sleeping children and asking who would be more qualified to answer a national security emergency call at 3 a.m.
“The question is not about picking up the phone. The question is: What kind of judgment will you make when you answer?” Obama said as he campaigned in Texas ahead of crucial contests here and in Ohio on Tuesday.
“We’ve had a red phone moment. It was the decision to invade Iraq. And Senator Clinton gave the wrong answer. George Bush gave the wrong answer. John McCain gave the wrong answer,” Obama said.
Obama’s response to his Democratic rival’s ad — which began airing in Texas on Friday morning — was a double-barreled swipe at both Clinton and the likely Republican presidential nominee.
Polls show a tight race between Obama and Clinton in both states. Military issues play well in Texas, home to 16 active-duty military bases, including Fort Hood, the nation’s largest Army post.

“Despite widespread popular belief, U.S. military installations abroad and U.S. diplomatic or consular facilities are not part of the United States within the meaning of the 14th Amendment. A child born on the premises of such a facility is not subject to the jurisdiction of the United States and does not acquire U.S. citizenship by reason of birth.” However, the Panama Canal zone was under U.S. sovereignty at the time of McCain’s birth. The question stands on whether that constitutes being part of the United States. It’s a question for legal minds now, but how funny would it be if after all this, John McCain would be forced to bow out of the race on grounds of ineligibility?
I think we should let Senator McCain run! Don’t you?

(((That @@(RW), is a racist lie.)))
No ITN, it’s not. Margaret Sanger had a plan which she put into play through Planned Parenthood. You heard the audio where Planned Parenthood employees, manning the phones, are more than happy to accept donations specifically earmarked for African American women. They listened to the racist comments and said they “were understandable.”
You repeatedly proclaim that the Bush Administration had evil intents prior to invading Iraq. You have no proof of that but yet you claim it to be true. You have a personal agenda.
On the other hand you have historical documents indicating Margaret Sanger’s objectives but yet you want to claim that as false? You can’t. It’s documented.
If you support Planned Parenthood and, at the core of that program, Sanger’s racist eugenics, then you support racist discrimination. There’s no getting around this argument ITN. You are what you “willingly” promote. It’s their agenda and yours.

I’m getting tired of people complaining about the reference to Obama’s middle name “Hussein.” Its as if these libs don’t think its relevant to anything when its very clear that having such a name means that you are in fact a Islamofacsist terrorist who wants to kill us all. Worst still is the fact that his parents knew 47 years ago that their son would be member of a terrorist organization not to be formed until some 30 years later. In fact, they gave him this name before there were any US/Middle East conflicts whatsoever, all in anticipation that their son would publicly be a member of a Christian Church but would secretly support world-wide jihad. I mean Obama’s parents were thinking way ahead weren’t they? What I can’t figure out is that if they wanted their son to be the Muslim Manchurian Candidate that they didn’t name him something less threatening like “Bob.” I guess we can just be glad that they weren’t THAT smart, right?
I suppose that the America-hating libs would also think that suggesting that a politician was the Anti-Christ because each of his three names has 6 letters like… let’s say… pull a name out of the hat: Ronald Wilson Reagin.
You see 6-6-6. Pointing that out is clearly a relevant campaign issue that voters should have to decide: Do I want the Anti-Christ to be President? I don’t know about you but I am certain that Ronald Wilson Reagan would agree with me on this one. In fact I’m quite certain that Reagan would want all of us to know that anyone with 3 names of 6 letters each in fact is the demon-possessed son of Satan himself.
I personally think that we should not have any President’s whose names derive from prior or current enemies. That means no German, British, French, Italian, Spanish, Japanese or Confederate named people ever. Why? Because people with those sorts of names tried to kill us. That’s why I didn’t vote for Bush. He might be a closet Nazi with that German surname. Who wants a President who could be “just like Hitler?” And I’ll never know how anyone could support the Mussolini like Guliani nor can I figure out how Eisenhower got to be President. We might as well have elected a damn Jap.
I think that we should import our Presidents from Switzerland or Scanidavia. I don’t think we’ve ever gone to war with peopl

Senator Jay Rockefeller Endorses Obama
by Sam Graham-FelsenFriday, February 29, 2008 at 02:46 PM CHICAGO, IL – Today, Senator Jay Rockefeller, the Chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, endorsed Barack Obama for president, citing his judgment on the Iraq war and national security issues, and calling him the right candidate to lead our country during a time of instability at home and abroad.
Senator Rockefeller said, “Today, I’m proud to lend my support and strong endorsement to Barack Obama and his candidacy for President of the United States. Barack Obama is the most qualified person – Democrat or Republican – to lead our country in the face of enormous challenges – the very real threat of terrorism, economic uncertainty, and instability at home and abroad.
“As Chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, I am all too aware that the threats we face are unconventional. They are sophisticated. They are constantly changing and adapting. And they are very serious. What matters most in the Oval Office is sound judgment and decisive action. It’s about getting it right on crucial national security questions the first time – and every time.
“The indisputable fact is Barack Obama was right about Iraq when many of us were wrong. It was a tough call and the single greatest national security question, and mistake, of our time. Today, we remain a country at war, and countless mistakes over the last six and a half years have made us less safe. The stakes have never been higher, and that is why we must take a stand.
“I am not just supporting Barack Obama because of his strength on national security. I am equally proud of his commitment to rebuild America – so that we’re a country of equality and prosperity – where no segment of society is left behind. I know Barack Obama will fight and win the battle for health care, good paying jobs, and energy security.
“Barack Obama is a uniquely gifted, brilliant and strategic thinker, who genuinely understands the hopes and desires of the American people. There is nothing sheltered about his life; he’s always had to work hard, and he’s always fought to make his community and his country better.
“A leader like Barack Obama just doesn’t come along very often, and as voters who care passionately about the future of our country, we cannot afford to squander this opportunity.”

GreenJeans,
I really appreciate, and like, your equibility in response to my junk tomato cracks about Hauer & Young. To clarify: I haven’t looked at the text in a few years, but when I did I was glad not to have to assign it. Presumably no harm could come from your recommending it—-as a great many people have done—-to a skeptic wanting to understand the import of that foundational canon.
But here’s why I didn’t want to, and didn’t have to, use it. I was able to group students according to the nature of their interest in, variously, Hebrew and Christian Bible. Huge advantage.
Those who wanted to get “The Bible as Literature”, Hauer’s & Young’s intended readership, were students with no exposure to Western religion but with a great deal of interpretive training. So the hermeneutical chapters of the “Intro” were too scant for them.
Those couple of skeptics who wanted scientific approaches, e.g. Biblical archaelogogy, philology and German historicism, were better off boring right into that stuff, as they did do.
But the biggest groups always were the ones who wanted to study those sacred texts to understand what the texts mean to those who hold, and have held, them sacred.
That is what Comparative Religion does, what Hauer & Young do especially poorly, and what teachers of “The Bible as Literature” almost never do. Indeed in public schools, for example, it’s erroneously considered unconstitutional to do so.
So, the same old problem with textbooks: they’re textbooks.
