Yeah, but Ku Klux Klintoon will just blame that on Obama.

~~~~~
Look at the Whiny Times making a “strong” case for government provided health care:
{{{{What happened to Allen at Georgia Regional reflects a pattern of poor medical care at the state hospitals….At Hughes Spalding Children’s Hospital, where the ambulance crew took Allen for treatment, a physician described Allen as “emaciated.” He was dehydrated. His kidneys had failed. Bruises and cuts covered his head, his chest, his abdomen, his legs, his neck, his buttocks. Several wounds, doctors wrote, were “superinfected” —- so badly, they had to be drained surgically.-Urinal}}}}
The people at Georgia Regional are not democrats or Republicans, no, they are government flunkies who couldn’t care less about the menial tasks that the bureaucrats assign to them.
They get paid no matter what, they are unfirable and if you complain about their performance they will hit you with a discrimination charge, no matter if they are white or black.
We are under the control of our own sorry government.
~~~~~

{{{{Pledging to make a “clean break with the past” and root out corruption, Republican Bobby Jindal tried to separate himself from politics as usual as he was sworn in as Louisiana’s governor Monday.-Urinal}}}}

Al-Gitmo: Just think, even if Ku Klux Klintoon gets, God forbid, elected president, you will still have your own little wingnut leading Louisiana down the road to a smaller and more efficient government.

And one that can probably evacuate their citizens when there is a huge hurricane coming towards you.

See, you asked for “change,” you got it.

Bwa.

~~~~~
{{{{Barack Obama joined the fray Sunday, proposing a $75 billion “stimulus” that would have the government send millions of Americans a check for $250, plus another $250 in bonus Social Security payments.}}}}
The same people that were whining about the $600 that Bush gave out a few years back, now, all of a sudden, $250 is a king’s ransom.
So you think the main stream media is liberal?
{{{Matthews stated, “I will never underestimate Hillary Clinton again.” But the next day, Matthews said, “[T]he reason she’s a U.S. senator, the reason she’s a candidate for president, the reason she may be a front-runner is her husband messed around.”}}}}
{{{In 1999, when Clinton was running for the Senate for the first time, Matthews said: “I mean, it’s hilarious, but isn’t that her main claim, that she’s the victim of the — of the — of the year?” later adding, “Now it’s an election ca — it’s a bumper sticker. ‘My husband cheated on me, make me senator.’ “}}}
That’s the kind of fairness that the GOP approves of.
{{{— The Republican presidential candidates sought to embrace Hispanics in a Spanish language debate, striving to mark common ground with a growing voter bloc while softening the anti-illegal immigration rhetoric that has marked their past encounters.}}}
Republicans aren’t racist in front of brown people. They are too busy locking their car doors.
{{{“Almost everyone I’ve talked to says we’re going to move to Houston. What I’m hearing which is sort of scary is they all want to stay in Texas. Everyone is so overwhelmed by the hospitality. And so many of the people in the arena here, you know, were underprivileged anyway, so this is working very well for them.”}}}
From the Republican earth mother herself! That is one cold hearted witch In a pearl necklace. Bet she scared the she-it out of HW.
{{{Citing “scheduling conflicts,” Republican candidates for president have dodged the National Urban League’s Annual Conference, the National Council of La Raza’s Annual Conference, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) convention, the National Association of Latino Elected Officials (NALEO), the National Education Association (NEA), the National Council of La Raza (NCLR),…. None of the top four candidates attended a PBS debate at a historically black college in Baltimore, not a single Republican candidate participated in the Logo forum on LGBT issues, and the refusal of all but one Republican candidate to participate in the proposed Univision debate on Latino issues forced the network to cancel it.}}}
The GOP plays it own race card.
{{{For all those getting really excited about anti-war, libertarian Republican Ron Paul, it’s worth noting that he’s pretty racist and also an anti-Semite. The Houston Chronicle story linked above contains quotes from a newsletter Mr. Paul put out in the 1980s and 1990s. It includes quotes referring to blacks as crime-prone and “fleet-footed.” Mr. Paul also wrote that “By far the most powerful lobby in Washington of the bad sort is the Israeli government” and that the goal of the Zionist movement is to stifle criticism. Below are two more news clips making reference to the racist statements in Mr. Paul’s newsletter. These problems have clearly been out there since the mid-1990s, but Mr. Paul has been below the radar until now. That anecdote, of course, presents Romney as a man of proper sentiments. But sentiment alone doesn’t make for a good president. Intelligence, discernment and courage count too. The racist dimwit kkkampaign plods on:
{{{{Democrats never miss an opportunity to play the race card against Republicans and even black conservatives like Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas who dare to dissent from liberal orthodoxy. So it’s tempting to enjoy the political entertainment value of a race-based dust up between Senators Ku Klux Klinton and Obama.}}}}
{{{{And as the fallout shows, she’ll have to be very careful about pushing back on this front if she wants to keep black supporters from abandoning her en masse, not only now but in November when they could decide to stay home.}}}}
~~~~~

{{{{Ku Klux Klintoon broadcast her own humility: “You know, I’m very other-directed. I don’t like talking about myself.” She also described the central role she plays in the lives of all living creatures in the universe: “The Iraqi government, they watch us, they listen to us. I know very well that they follow everything that I say.”}}}}

~~~~~
{{{{When asked to explain what he was talking about, the Ku Klux Klinton campaign—which has already lost a top official when he resigned over raising Obama’s drug use—issued a statement saying Johnson was simply referring to Obama’s days as a community organizer. This made perfect sense, of course, because Obama’s efforts organizing African-Americans in poor neighborhoods has nothing at all to do with his involvement with black concerns—the contrast Johnson was drawing. {{{{Ronald Reagan said once, “No greater challenge faces our society today than ensuring that each one of us can maintain his dignity and his identity in an increasingly complex, centralized society. Extreme taxation, excessive controls, oppressive government competition with business, frustrated minorities and forgotten Americans are not the products of free enterprise. They are the residue of centralized bureaucracy, of government by a self-anointed elite.” Ronald Reagan was right, but the self-anointed elite today is the media machine that tells us what to think and who to pick and when we don’t do what they want, they wonder how we could be so stupid.}}}}
{{{{That is Fred Thompson’s message to every Republican primary voter. The Reagan Coalition is not dead, but it is in need of a new leader. The voters are jaded by a Republican Congress who squandered the majority and by an Evangelical President they thought was a Reagan conservative. They are discouraged but they might find what they are looking for in Fred Thompson.}}}}
{{{{Since the beginning of the war in Iraq, Democrats have cast veterans and active-duty military men and women as victims or villains. Some where in the GOP are left a few people with sense.
{{{“We sound like we don’t want immigration; we sound like we don’t want black people to vote for us,” said former congressman Jack Kemp (N.Y.), who was the GOP vice presidential nominee in 1996. “What are we going to do — meet in a country club in the suburbs one day? If we’re going to be competitive with people of color, we’ve got to ask them for their vote.”}}}
Then there are those who have sense when it’s way to late to do them any damn good.
{{{“For Republicans to consistently refuse to engage in front of an African American or Latino audience is an enormous error,” said former House speaker Newt Gingrich (Ga.), who has not yet ruled out a White House run himself.}}}
Wow! Aren’t we glad we escaped that numnutz as President? What with his Contract On America and how well that turned out.
{{{“When you reject every black invitation and every brown invitation you receive, is that a scheduling issue or is it a pattern?” he asked. “I don’t believe anybody should be elected president of the United States if they think along the way they can ignore people of color. That’s just not the America we live in.”}}}
They certainly don’t mind having brown people watch their kids and mow their lawns.
It is wonderful to see liberals turning on each other wih the same intolerance and intellectual dishonesty they have displayed since Bush is in office.
The left has divided into the Obama, Clinton and Edwards camps and have started hateful attacks on each other. Just goes to show that the liberal hatred for Bush has a lot less to do with Bush than it does the intolerant nature of liberals.
Keep bashing each other, please. I am really enjoying it.
Funny how the GOP is always a day late and a dollar short!Running vets for Congress? Where the hell were they last go round?
{{{ Fighting Dem Candidates - It has been a pleasure to see the leadership roles taken by those Fighting Dem Vets who went to Congress and Senate. Jim Webb has been amazing in the Senate, moving more boldly than is normal for freshmen Senators. And in the House Vice Admiral Sestak has been an advisor up and down the halls of Congress and makes the chickenhawks on talk shows sheepish (sorry for the mixed metaphor!) when he speaks of commanding a battle fleet. His newly elected Fighting Fighting Dem colleagues have been equally powerful voices on the Hill.}}}
{{{ All of these candidates were challengers, and as usual, the incumbents won most of these elections. However, six Fighting Dems and two non Veteran parents of servicemen in Iraq won their races, and seven of those eight seats taken by Fighting Dems were previously held by Republicans. A number of fighting Dem’s also came very close to being elected. Further more the Fighting Dems forced Republicans to donate time, money etc. in districts and statesd that in previous years they had not. This allowed non Veteran Democrats in other Districts and states to win.}}}
The GOP is trying to copy a winning idea. They’ll do it badly. Always a day late and a dollar short. That dollar along with trillions of others charged to Our grandchildren!
Geez, where is IN THE NEWS today or did we get another name, ballboy?
~~~~~

{{{{Think about that. Clinton voted for a resolution that, according to its title, would “authorize the use of United States Armed Forces against Iraq.” You had to be a 5-year-old — or a Democratic senator with presidential aspirations — to believe that the measure was about putting U.N. inspectors in Iraq. And besides, as she voted for the resolution, Clinton said that a “pre-emptive war” would be “a mistake.”}}}}

~~~~~
{{{{Edwards divides the anti-Clinton vote - and so undermines the prospects for the changes that he so passionately demands in our government. By staying in, he’s helping deliver the nomination to the person whom he has described as the defender of the status quo.}}}}
{{{{The democratic nomination for president will likely be decided by the subtle pulls of ego against duty that tug at the conscience of John Edwards. He manifestly can no longer win - but he helps Hillary Clinton if he stays in the race and boosts Barack Obama if he pulls out.}}}}
{{{ Sens. Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, in an attempt to ease tensions between their campaigns after several days of contentious bickering, are calling for Democrats to come together.}}}
As always happens, the Dems want to make peace, but the GOP will want war, war, war.
Between nations or candidates. Little pundits in pleated skirts with GOP sweaters stomping on the floor and cheering - 2 4 6 8 there ain’t anyone we don’t hate
{{{ “We differ on a lot of things. And it is critical to have the right kind of discussion on where we stand. But when it comes to civil rights and our commitment to diversity, when it comes to our heroes - President John F. Kennedy and Dr. King - Senator Obama and I are on the same side.”}}}
But will the talking heads cover this part? Hell no. As long as there is money In making it look as though the Dems are having an internal war the GOP is happy.
War, War War is that all they ever think about?
Almost forgot $$$$$$$$$$$$$$ and war war war!
Isn’t it kinda cute, a million or so posts under the name “IN THE NEWS,” a three week frenzied attack under the name “Hey Duh” and now it has shifted it’s massive efforts into “Lackaballs,” all because of little ole me.
One person who’s whole entire life focus has been shifted to provide a hysterical outburst to the things that I do.
So the IN THE NEWS onslaught of spam is not to provide any message or debating points to this blog, it is the day long maniacal pursuit of a stalker, who obviously hates and cannot deal with what I represent.
Oh good grief, give the race card a rest.
Liberals are intolerant Mike? Pot…meet kettle. I think liberals have a better track record in the intolerance department.
You like to make general negative sweeping statements about liberals, don’t ya? So how exactly do you figure that liberals as an entire group are so intolerant?
I get very sick of the media making an issue of this, as they do with many things. I tried to watch the news last night, but this is all they talked about.
They did however mention the $20 billion arms deal Bush is making with the Saudis. This bothers me a good bit more. Is this foreign policy for Bush?
Speaking of Bush foreign policy, how’s that Middle East peace deal going? Haven’t heard much about that lately.
And speaking of track records, the US doesn’t seem to have a good one of making the best judgements in regards to who we sell our weapons too.
Well, we can be all positive about this, that’s $20 billion we don’t have to spend on the war because you know Bush wouldn’t do anything else with that money.
G’morning, Bosch
As I fast forwarded thru O’Reilly last night I saw he had remarks and a segment on this “race” issue. Said he wasn’t defending Hillary (sorta sounded like it) but was demonstrating how mainstream media manipulates remarks, etc.
Chris Mathews, MSNBC, attacks Hillary. Bill O’Reilly, FOX, defends her (my take) and attacks dishonest media.
What an interesting campaign season.
G’morning to you, too, Mrs. Godzilla
Take the radio broadcast completely out of the incident. Put yourself in the position of the ships’ captains even without the fake broadcast. Given the Navy’s track record with speedboats in the Middle East the captains showed proper restraint. I think it was the Iranians, not the Americans, whose actions in this case were provocative (one side was conducting normal transit, the other sought out the other).
I still maintain what I said the other day - Ahmadinejad’s position with Khameini, particularly after the American revised estimate on Iran’s nuke program, the perceived threat from America has diminished so the economic mess takes center stage, and Ahmadinejad may just provoke an incident for domestic political purposes. The US should engage diplomatically - not as Hillary proposed - without preconditions.
For my buddy RB from Gwinnett, let me answer your question also. You wrote:
“So, lets get this straight…
The intelligence community said Iraq had WMD’s from at least 1998, when Clinton commented Iraq had WMD’s, up until 2003 when Bush and most of the democratic leadership who also have access to their intel reports made a decision to disarm them of WMD’s. They believed Iran had an active nuclear program each and every year from 2003 to present, even though they now say it was stopped in 2003. So they were either wrong for the 4 years since 2003 or they’re wrong now. “
Here is the differnce, yes the intel community in 98 thought Iraq had WMD. The UN tried to send in inspectors in October of 98 and Sadaam wouldnt let them in to inspect. After a 15-0 Un vote we dropped a few bombs on him. I beleive the GOP at the time called this WAG THE DOG.
Now 2003, Intel still beleived that Iraq had WMD, but the major differnce is that the UN inspectors were allowed all over the country and found nothing. Hans Blix the lead inspector said as much while the Bush admin kept saying oh we know where they are. And if you remember Blix expressing his frustration with the Bushies that if they know where they are they should tell us. You remember Rummy saying “we know were they are, there in the North, the south, the east..blah,blah,blah. So you had one administration who was blocked from inspecting and another who inspectors found nothing but Bush didnt believe them. Just like now that intel shows no Iran nukes but Bush feels it in his heart so he thinks he is right…
Mrs Godzilla
The USS Cole was hit by a speedboat. Unarmed. Except for the explosives carried. Seventeen sailors killed, thirty-nine injured. It was a new tactic, one the Navy is now on guard against. Rather like airport security after airliners crashing into civilian buildings.
Even without ramming the ship (at N knots, closure rate of N feet per second, at what point is it too late to engage a speedboat heading directly at you? ask the sailors) there are enough portable munitions to cause harm. Or, as the dumping of the white boxes indicates, a new type of IED. Think about it. The ships did not alter course and sailed past the boxes. If the boxes had explosives, ball bearings, etc and a proximity fuse (designed to explode when they detect mass in the area) there could be more American deaths.
And that would be just a tad provocative.
I must question this blanket statement and ask for your source.
“That would be much funnier if the military didn’t already vote decidedly Republican.”
I know Ron Paul, the anti-war Republican is getting more $$$$ from military families than any one else.
I know that military dollars (40% according to the Center for Responsive Politics) are going to the Democrats.
What I don’t know is where you got that “fact”, or if it was true of the past or will be true in 2008.
Oh, and if the question count is on between us again, your last paragraph’s question is unclear, apparently rhetorical and based on your maliciously incorrect interpretation of a statement of mine, therefore not worth a response.
For RB again,
Yes i worked over 15 years in Intel. I worked when Reagan and Bush I was in office, what we in Intel appreciated was nobody tried to doctor what we found. But in the Bush case they used your GOP hero and future Presidental Freedom medal winner “Curveball” who told these elaborate stories about biological weapons. Now once the CIA deposed him and investigated the found all of his claims to be false. Problem was you had Cheney and Scooter up at Langley everyday cherry picking what they wanted to use. This has been well documented. So as you can see this is the only Administration to every do to the intel community what they have done. Cherry pick the info they wanted and leave out all the truth….
Being aware of the possibilities, I think the Navy captains showed remarkable professionalism.
But the scenario is a real possibility. Same holds true in the reverse. If we take certain actions against certain ships (include Iran, N Korea) in international waters we risk the possibility that we will be fired upon (even in that case we’d still be the aggressors…) - which is why we don’t maneuver in such a way around the ships of such countries.
But you are correct - certain actions bring about revisions in the rules of engagement. And the revisions are most often reactive - they are impelled by what others do.
Don’t worry about Lake Lanier. If you listen carefully, the broadcast from the speedboats approaching you will likely be “Do you have any beer?”
Good morning Paul and Mrs. G!
All this speedboat stuff is disturbing, but IMHO, not very important. Again, I think the media is making a mountain out of molehill.
I mean, let’s be real here, how stupid would you have to be to drive around in a speedboat dropping things in the water near a Navy ship. I know I’m talking about a culture who some members think nothing about strapping explosives to themselves and blowing up things, but I have a good bit more faith in our Navy and other military leaders than I do in Bush to use some restraint and only respond in an immediate threat.
I think places like Iran need war, don’t ask me to explain that right now….too long, short version, provoking us, looking the victim, getting weapons from other places to fight off big bad imperialistic US…. so I think it’s very important to use some restraint and diplomacy - but then again, I thought that’s what they needed to do in Iraq.
So what do you think about this $20 billion arms deal with the Saudis?
[[DebbieDoRight — Welcome back. If it’s not too personal, where’d your husband get posted after graduating from the language institute? I hope it’s in more of a garden spot than south central Arizona!]]
Thanks!! Can’t stay long though, duty calls and I still have to prepare for next semester — the good news though, with all the running around that I do, I’ve lost 25 pounds!!! Now I look like a Watuzzi warrior!! Tall and skinny — I’ve got to get some of my weight back!!! I’m loosing my ba-dunka-dunk-dunk! (The pride of all black females!)
My husband has been in Afghanistan for the past 12 months — I’ll see him when he gets leave in April; that’s when he’ll tell me that he’s “thinking about” re-enlisting again — so that all his training won’t go to “waste”. I’m going to pretend I’m suprised by his announcement but I really won’t be — he’s been hinting around for the past couple of months about re-upping.
But I WILL tell him to think long and hard about whether he wants to be married to the military or to me. When we got married, he was geting out of the military and, as far as I was concerned, WASN’T going to be a soldier for much longer; growing up in a military family I knew that the one thing I didn’t want to marry was a SOLDIER, AIRMAN, SEAMAN, etc. It’s HARD being the spouse of a military person and spending every holiday, birthday, etc. ALONE while everyone else has someone to share their lives with. So, I’m gonna put my foot down. Who knows where that’ll go.
How are things with you? I stop in about once a week to catch up on the blogs and I see you’re still smacking down stupidity for truth, justice and the American Way!! Keep up the good work!!
Well, they did it, so that answers your question! Also tells you we’re dealing with people who have a slightly different view of reality than we do.
I understand your “Iran needs war” comment. See my earlier comments about Ahmadinejad’s political position.
The arms deal - Foreign Military Sales have been a staple of large countries for years. Helps the companies. Helps the country’s strategic interests. Will use sorry excuse of “if we don’t the Russians, Germans, French, Brits will.”
Saudis getting a bit nervous over Iran. Their perspective, as has been discussed here, is a Dem Pres withdraws from Iraq, Iraq is unstable, Iranian influence grows tremendously, they become the premier regional power, they have a radical Islamic component to their government, the Saudis feel like the business in a gang neighborhood where the cops announce a withdrawal. The business owner buys some independent security.
Still doesn’t mean I like the scope of our arms sales. But in some cases they serve our interests.
We’ve been training Saudi pilots and other officers for decades. In America. They go through the flight program with American military. Then they go on to become high ranking officers, or back to their royal family duties. But many still have unofficial associations with Americans. Which, we hope, plays to our advantage.
Mrs. G.,
“And then President Bush used that faux mountain in the media to rachet up the same old terror talk.”
Exactly.
Hopefully some things will change and the general public will see through the fear tactics.
Now, the Saudis - it would be real easy to say, why the hell are we selling arms to a country where the 9/11 hijackers came from and OBL. But that’s comparing apples to oranges, well not oranges, but maybe red apples to crab apples. The thing that bugs me is that what have the Saudis done for us lately?
To me, it just another example of how our country has absolutely no intention of reducing our addiciton to oil, because let’s be real here, Saudis = Oil.
And, Bush was all about Middle East peace just a couple months ago. Where did that go? Call me crazy, but peace does not come from selling weapons. That’s kind of counterproductive in my opinion.
AND, I have a book that I think you would enjoy: “Animal, Vegetable, Miracle” by Barbara Kingsolver. It’s about the food industry - scary stuff, but really good!
Some good information in there, but not very surprising. I think most people already know the trends they show data for. In this one, those who have served in the military voted for Bush 57% to 41% for Kerry. Kinda shocking considering Kerry had such a stellar military record and Bush was nothing but a draft dodging drunk, eh?
I don’t have time to look for the absentee military ballot breakdown from the 2000 election in FL when the D’s tried to keep them from being counted, but I suspect they knew those votes would go to the R’s or they would have fought to count them. Sent my last, saw yours, here’s one last before I go.
It’s a tough situation. Really, this deployment thing has been an issue only since Iraq - before that, the remote tours were a lot, lot less. A couple in a career, in many cases. But this recent development is “the way it is” from your perspective.
You’ll have to ask him - depending on his MOS - these year-long assignments - will they be at all under his control, if he doesn’t volunteer will they be every four or five years? Or can he get postings elsewhere - DC - and have long assignments there?
I went to look at a vehicle a while back. Sales guy was a trainee. Middle age. We got to talking while his boss was going through the bad cop routine. He said he had a son, mid twenties, married, two kids, who’d gotten out of the Army after one or two enlistments. Guy said his wife was relieved, happy, didn’t like her son in the Army. Said their son came to them and said he was going back in (which he’d already done). Said his biggest reasons were, he was finally in a group where the color of his skin was irrelevant. His actions were what counted. Plus he liked being part of something larger than himself, where he felt a real sense of brotherhood (or whatever the proper term is when men and women are in the same outfit - but you get the point).
So while the current time away scenario may not always be the norm, it’s what it is now. But may not always be.
Good luck.
This is the thing I don’t get. If the leaders of Iran or any other country in the world just one day woke up and said, “Let’s bomb the hell out of [insert country name here], come on, it will be fun” wouldn’t every country in the known world come to the aid of the country who was attacked?
Yes there were dems on that committee but it was lead by a GOP. Here some more info for you:
Ten days after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, President Bush was told in a highly classified briefing that the U.S. intelligence community had no evidence linking the Iraqi regime of Saddam Hussein to the attacks and that there was scant credible evidence that Iraq had any significant collaborative ties with Al Qaeda, according to government records and current and former officials with firsthand knowledge of the matter.
The Senate Intelligence Committee has asked the White House for the CIA assessment, the PDB of September 21, 2001, and dozens of other PDBs as part of the committee’s ongoing investigation into whether the Bush administration misrepresented intelligence information in the run-up to war with Iraq. The Bush administration has refused to turn over these documents.
Indeed, the existence of the September 21 PDB was not disclosed to the Intelligence Committee until the summer of 2004, according to congressional sources. Both Republicans and Democrats requested then that it be turned over. The administration has refused to provide it, even on a classified basis, and won’t say anything more about it other than to acknowledge that it exists.
So if they hid this what else did they hide. I will tell you why the Dems didnt protest, they were spineless and didnt want to be called unpatriotic, so they have a hand in this also, but not a big a hand and Dubyas lackies…
“The sad reality is that if one of those Iranian speed boats had been packed with explosives and slammed into one of our ships you “know it all” libs would be on here b!tching about how Bush should have known better after the Cole and blown up the speed boats before they got close to our ships.”
So your basically saying that the Dems wouldn’t be shocked by this act but to quickly blame bush, pretty much the same thing, thinking GOP is better at Dems on terrorism. And yep i was in intel, and if you would like to see some of my work watch your credit report in the next couple of months…..
Trends always change, but until the next election what we have to go by is actual historical data, which even your post says was more decidedly Republican in past elections. And I wouldn’t put too much stock in polls, if you know what I mean.
Your comment from earlier today was yet another cheap shot against the military you claim to support (but not the war). You libs need to give up your thought they are a bunch of mindless victims who were signed up against their will and are over there killing women and children. Barack Obama is a member of Chicago’s Trinity United Church of Christ. Its minister, and Obama’s spiritual adviser, is the Rev. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr. In 1982, the church launched Trumpet Newsmagazine; Wright’s daughters serve as publisher and executive editor. Every year, the magazine makes awards in various categories. Last year, it gave the Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr. Trumpeter Award to a man it said “truly epitomized greatness.” That man is Louis Farrakhan.
{{{{{Maybe for Wright and some others, Farrakhan “epitomized greatness.” For most Americans, though, Farrakhan epitomizes racism, particularly in the form of anti-Semitism. RB from Gwinnett:
This will show you how the Bush admin had mishandled info worse than any other admin on record:
When the National Intelligence Estimate on Iran was released late last year, reporting that the nation’s intelligence agencies had concluded that Iran shelved its nuclear weapons program four years ago, Bush responded with some serious verbal jujitsu, trying to make the case that the report actually vindicated his white-hot hostility toward that regime. Newsweek, reporting that Bush had “all but disowned the document” in private conversations with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert last week.
Fred Kaplan writes for Slate: “For the president of the United States to wave away the whole document … is gratuitous and self-destructive.
“Then again, such behavior is of a piece with the pattern of relations between President Bush and his intelligence agencies. In September 2004, when he was asked about a pessimistic CIA report on the course of the occupation in Iraq, Bush replied that the agency was ‘just guessing.’”
Kaplan sees all sorts of irony in the present situation. “In decades past, the CIA has often lost credibility as a result of its own failures and scandals. Now President Bush is splashing doubt not just on the CIA, but on all 16 U.S. intelligence agencies, simply because their judgments are out of synch with his policies.”
Then there’s the fact that “this NIE is the product of reforms that President Bush himself signed into law — the creation of a director of national intelligence and various other procedural changes — designed to keep intelligence analysis free of political interference.”
Kaplan writes that Bush’s reaction “can’t help but demoralize the intelligence community.” And it also “reinforces the widespread view that the president views intelligence strictly as a political tool: When it backs up his policies, it’s as good as gold; when it doesn’t, it’s ‘just guessing.’ This result is that all intelligence is degraded and devalued, at home and abroad.
There you have it! It was in Newsweek, so it must be true!
Question for you WSFW. What was the NIE’s position on Iran’s nuclear program in 2003, 2004, 2005, and 2006? I do believe they thought the program was alive and well during those years, correct? RB,
Fact - A fact is defined as something that is the case, something that actually exists, or something that can be verified according to an established standard of evaluation.
Opinion - A person’s ideas and thoughts towards something. It is an assessment, judgment or evaluation of something. An opinion is not a fact, because opinions are either not falsifiable, or the opinion has not been proven or verified.
Please note the difference. You present your opinions as fact and everyone else’s facts as opinions. Hope this helps.
To answer your question on the Iran intel. Here is the thing at it was the same during the cold war. We dont have any agents in Iran, so we cannot verify what we think we know. So intel may have thought it was still there and Iran could have destroyed it. I will give you an example. In 82 we deposed and ex KGB officer who claimed the Soviets had a train that could launch ICBMS. Now we had some intel on RR tracks that ended at a mountain but couldnt figure out why. Even after this ex agent gave us the info we still were skeptical even though the Reagan admin was looking for anything to expand Star Wars. I give them credit they didnt take it and run, because 6 months later our sats picked up a photo of a train with one of its cars opened with an ICBM pointed straight at the sky. Lesson here, always wait on hunches until you have definitive proof.
So both parties are to blame on the intel,they should have stood up to the WH but for whatever reason they cowed down to them, That is why i say vote them all out, both parties and start over. what im saying about bush is they showed congress cherry picked intel instead of the whole package. No, WSFW, they didn’t. The CIA said she was a secret agent, however in their world there is a difference between being covert and secret. There is a distinction in pay grades and pensions. Those elements of her status were never released and were never asked for by the prosecutors. Scooter was accused and convicted of lying to the investigators. Through the entire process, the prosecutors avoided the issue of whether or not she was covert. It was never part of the trial. I found Hillary’s comments about MLK belittling. LBJ would have had nothing to do absent the brave efforts of MLK.
LBJ would have been a tiny footnote in history. He was an opportunistic democrat in other words. Dr. King took the risks. LBJ took political credit.
This is just a public service announcement—nothing disparaging against gays. I know that some here have professed to being so…
Drug-resistant staph passed in gay sex -US study
SAN FRANCISCO, Jan 14 (Reuters) - A drug-resistant strain of potentially deadly bacteria has moved beyond the borders of U.S. hospitals and is being transmitted among gay men during sex, researchers said on Monday.
19,000 Americans died of this staph infection in 2005.
Just Asking
Without rehashing it again, and I did save the letter from, I believe General Hayden, to the committee - CIA did not expressely state Ms Plame was acting in a covert status at the time of the disclosure, nor did he state her status met the requirements of the definition under the Intelligence Identities Protection Act.
The letter, and comments by Waxman, struck me as masterful examples of bureaucrat-speak. In other words, it isn’t what was said, but what people thought they said.
Waxman could have told the CIA the committee intended to state the sun is green. Then at committee he could have said that and then stated his remarks were cleared by the CIA. “Cleared” does not necessarily mean “accurate, acceptable or approved.” Maddening, but that’s how they play the game.
Paul,
The head of the CIA has stated numerous times that her outing was illegal and it jeopardized the WMD program. You guys remind me of the lawyer who after his client was busted with 20 kilos of coke says “oh its for personal use”. You guys can spin it how you want to but she may not have been James Bond but her outing served the Bush admin well.
The reason nobody was convicted of this was because of Scooters lies. Fitzgerald has stated many times that he was hot on Cheneys heels but the lies and stonewalling of Libby prevented him from finding the real truth. That is why Fitzgerald requested and received a harsher sentence for Scooter. Its not that they didnt try but lying wall of Cheney and Libby prevented him from finding the truth.
And speaking of Dubya stated many times he would get rid of whoever was responsible for the leak. Yet Karl Rove was allowed to still work in the WH even though it was proved that Rove also leaked her name. So bush is a LIAR…………. But we already knew that, you seem to be the only person in the world who thinks all dubya says is the truth….
What bothered me about the entire proceeding was a matter of law was ignored and politics reigned supreme. Determining her status from the beginning was a relatively simple exercise. Yet it was not done. If the statutes were weak and a case could not be brought, one would think the first order of business of a new Democratic Congress would be to revise the statutes? Yet they did nothing in that regard - they moved on to other issues. But at least the cafeteria has a new menu. One must keep one’s priorities straight.
Many actions that are immoral, unethical or downright dirty are not illegal. Some are. But that’s why we have laws. Just as those angry at the illegal immigrant situation say “we are a nation of laws” (another claim I find amusing) so those who are angry over the Plame affair cry out at the subversion of justice - yet cannot point to a statute that would have effected prosecution and conviction.
But Ms Valerie has moved on. So’s Karl. There’s a good lesson there -
It’s a felony, WSFW, why wasn’t anybody charged with it? If she was covert, she was outed by one of the crew mentioned or her husband. Why no charges? Could it be she wasn’t covert as defined by the law written to protect covert agents? It would have been very easy to prove she was covert based on the law, so why didn’t they do that and press charges?
Good point, but the difference is OJ was charged with the crime and the prosecution didn’t get the job done. In the Plame case, nobody was charged with outing her under the law that protects covert agents. The facts that support her being covert were never discussed as part of the case. Why would that be?
WSFW, Scooter Libby was convicted and sentenced by the same people you say wouldn’t charge anyone for outing an agent. Does that really make sense to you??? You really need to get your news from somewhere other than The View.
This cartoon is good, but only because it tells a deeper truth. The fact is that the Democrats have always been racist, but it has often taken different forms. Hitlery slipped up and said what she really believes in her heart of hearts. It takes a white politician to ‘give’ these rights to the black and brown folks. Black folks can never really earn these things on their own. They just have to yearn for them until some smart white person deigns to help them. I will remind all of you conscending liberals that Bill Clinton’s chief mentor was the overtly racist and segregationist J. William Fullbright. His other mentor was Orville Faubus - do y’all remember Little Rock? I will remind you that Eisenhower was the Republican president who stood him down.
Bosch – from your 11:03
The Saudis have a capable force. Others are larger – Iran, Egypt, Syria, last I checked. But bigger isn’t better. Look at Israel.
Although we fought alongside Arabs in Desert Storm, before the US took the lead, the response of the neighboring countries to Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait and threatening Saudi Arabia was tepid at best. Rather like I imagine ours would be if say, Belize invaded Guatemala.
I don’t think countries wake up one day and take such action. Some countries consider it years before taking action. Others have the force to intimidate to get regional objectives met. And countries tend to react to perceived threats, not just actual threats. So Iran, with their large military force, its unconventional organization (quasi military conducting unconventional operations throughout the region), it’s oil, it’s position on the Strait – plus their religious ideology, is a force to be reckoned with.
Ahmadinejad a nut? Sane. With views many find nutty. But take a sane person with nutty views, put him in charge of a country… and people think Huckabee would be a nightmare? Not even close -
Your last line – the Cold War was over. Russia imploded. Our military, doctrine and weapons were built largely around that engagement. Yet for years no service (save the Air Force) did any serious reorganizing, and none really even changed the type of weapons they were buying or had in the pipeline. One – the Osprey – that was designed for a lot of covert ops kinds of missions – took a lot of criticism. Only so many $$$ to go around. So I’ll briefly take the position we did not go far enough in adjusting to the new realities. And here’s the flame on the gas – when Rumsfeld came on board with his proposals to raise the status of special ops, stop the big-ticket weapons systems in the pipeline (designed for a Cold War scenario) – skip an entire generation of weapons, then see where technology and the world situation took us before committing more billions – he very nearly didn’t survive politically. Then came 9-11 and much of that fell by the wayside.
Paul, I appreciate your astute and faithful rendering of the recent history of U.S. defense posture, which reads like a professional and disinterested one prepared for policymakers.
As I followed your narrative, though, I mean, what of Stealth? From the Carter Administration on, a quiet development multiply applicable to any force and to multiple threat responses. And all kept tighter than a drum, and declassified in a climate still free of viable countermeasures. I think perhaps that program, and the submarine service and the enormous efforts and breakthroughs in satellite technology, represented sound, supra-partisan investment in durable security that could withstand the crushing disappointment (!) of the unanticipated Soviet collapse.
And wouldn’t the Chinese agree?
Glenn,
Stealth is an excellent example of a system that has applicability far past a Cold War scenario. God bless Lockheed and the Skunk Works. You are correct - it is amazing how the program was kept quiet, aircraft were developed, and the UFO watchers went absolutely nuts.
A point can be made for the submarine service - for certain types of boats. My broad generalization was for certain weapons systems. The Air Force’s F-22 program, for example. BTW - that aircraft is more stealthy than the F-117 Nighthawk that did the majority of missions over Baghdad in Desert Storm. The Army’s heavy systems. It took Rumsfeld to cancel the Crusader - a multibillion dollar howitzer designed for the plains of Europe. First time in eons a program’s been outright canceled. (I believe one of the Rumsfeld band of generals critics was a one-time head of that program…). Army’s reaction to the SecDef is also why we needed a new Secretary of the Army and a general or two.
But these programs take on a life of their own. People don’t get promoted for halting programs. And they detract from, oh, say, armored vehicles for urban warfare. Up-armored Hummers, anyone?
The Navy’s onto something with their proposals for stealth warships. Small ones. Heavy armament. Spaces for special ops forces.
There are rays of hope in all of this.
I would like to take this opportunity to recognize two very dear friends of mine, both women.
One is in air transport—the other is in trucking. Both have contracts with the military in logistical support. The one in air transport needs a truck to get one of those new IED resistant Hummers to an airfield for transport to Iraq. She calls my friend in trucking. The one in trucking arranges for one of their drivers to immediately drop his full trailer in transit…pick up an empty and sends that truck to pick up the hummer for transport.
I asked my friend in trucking if that was a common request. “Not common” she said “just crucial”.
“When our guys need something NOW, we’ll move heaven and earth to get it to them.”
Behind the scenes and without recognition for the wonderful work they do. I’m more than happy to toot their horn. They don’t.
Early exit polls say that about 68% of the vote in the Republican primary is from Republicans and most of the rest is from the Independents. Paul, that’s wonderful, to get such a succinct and informed update from this unexpected source. Thanks! I hadn’t been apprised of this stuff for some years, and I feel like you’ve brought us more than halfway up to speed already.
I think the moves to non-lethal, to very small and smart strike forces, to conventional-cabable platforms, and generally to larger quantities of smaller and cheaper systems over against the long trend toward a few gold-plated eggs in too few baskets (presumably to scare the Soviets in negotiations) — that all of those were shrewd investments. And even though i don’t share his politics I think that Bill Perry, Carter’s Undersecretary for Procurement (Stealth) and Clinton’s Deputy Secretary and then Secretary, should really share with Burbank a lot of credit for his foresight and resourcefulness. He was like a colorless Rickover of the air, I suppose.
But I take your meaning about our inexplicable myopia about something as basic as ground troop transport. Good Lord.
Not to detract at all from your guarded optimism, but when i think of the green gazillions and untold black gazillions spent on “stockpile stewardship”, I can’t help but think, how about one thousandth of that spent on IED countermeasures?
But this is the rankest armchair Monday-morning mourning. Sometimes I don’t know whether layman (as I now am) should assume a democratic duty to formulate informed opinions about such matters, or whether it’s futile to do so, or whether alternatively it’s really better left entrusted to the folks with the training and the really long G2’s.
I’d want Treasury to cut a blank check for a Kelly Johnson or a Ben Rich any day, but it seems to much to expect such utter discipline and professional commitment and sheer brilliance to continue. And after the Bear’s hibernation, what’s the point in Ike’s duplication of R&D, public vs. private, e.g. contractor operators of some labs and federal operation of others? Seems extravagant now.
Fools no longer rush in where angels fear to tread – they can’t shoulder their way past the pollsters. The current pollster chatter is the two big issues in the presidential race are the war in Iraq and the economy, with race on standby in case those predictions develop fatal New Hampshire disease.
With February 5 and “Tsunami Tuesday” primaries less than a month away, what you don’t hear is much talk about illegal immigration and what we do about 14-16 million souls, most Hispanic and mostly Mexican.
That’s very odd when you look at the Tsunami states: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Kansas, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Utah. Illegal immigration has been an issue in all.
For some – notably Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado and New Mexico — it has been a Very Big Issue. Which is why the overwhelming silence from the frontrunners, punctuated by occasional projectile politicking, is so depressing.
Of the top six candidates who have yet to become trivia-quiz answers, only Huckabee puts illegal immigration at the top of his website list of issues. For the others, Clinton, Obama, Edwards, McCain and Romney, it doesn’t even make the top five. And for all six, the menu is pretty much Platitudes with Piety Salad or Red Meat With DeportEm Sauce.
All the politicians pretty much ignore that deciding the fate of 16 million fellow humans is also deciding our own, whether now or in the court we all will face. For this issue, there are no easy answers or simple plans. But there are, increasingly, frameworks for discussion, mostly in books.
I wrote one such, “Opening the Borders” (Level 4 Press 2007). Patrick Buchanan wrote another, “State of Emergency” (St. Martin’s Griffin 2007). And a search on Amazon or Barnes and Noble or other booksellers will find those viewpoints and everything in between.
All the books are probably candles in the political whirlwind, but when the 2009 presidential inauguration trash hits a landfill, the problem of illegal immigration will remain. And it will grow unless something is done that begins with thought and walks hand-in-hand with reason, fairness and a sense of common humanity.
It would be nice to see such an initiative coming from our current political leaders, but history suggests it must first come
Perry was a very smart visionary. I know many criticize bringing in some from allied private industry, but the right ones among them (such as Perry) bring a fresh perspective that’s sorely needed. And programs such as Stealth result.
I don’t mean this to be Monday morning backwards looking - but the system is supposed to be built upon forward-looking views of likely emerging threats. With the appropriate weapons following. It’s a good concept with a cumbersome system. I’d just like it to get better.
