Seriously - why waste time with a group whose opening statement is “you suck.” I imagine Congressman Paul was rather embarrassed by this.
Your twofer: full video? Where is the part where the cameraman was set up, the guy walked over and stood in front of the lens, the guy was asked to move and didn’t, the cameraman shifted several feet left, then the guy (who got his start selling windsurfing equipment to Sen Kerry and has been hanging on ever since - in other words, a nonprofessional operative) again walked over and stood in front of the camera.
Plenty of partisan web sites have the tone you cited. I’ve yet to find a professional journalist who condoned what the guy did. True, some say O’Reilly could have handled it better, but professional journalistic support for the guy is absent.
Frankly, if Sen Obama really calls for an end to partisanship, a new way of operating, he should fire the guy. What an embarrassment to a “new way” campaign. I could just see this guy on the White House lawn after Marine One touches down and the news crews are all set up…

Think Progress leads its questioning with a piece by a news organization - ABC. But who follows, on video, but a far-right opinion person (not a newsperson - Michelle Malkin. Who appears on Fox. Then follows quotes from “respectable” news organizations. It looks like the Think Progress antipathy towards anything Fox continues to muddy up its “analysis.”

He was in the place for the press. It was roped off from the regular folks. The fact the camera crew was set up around other camera crews.
Did you see the rest of the clip? Where Sen Obama walked over to O’Reilly, said “I’d like to shake your hand” and said he’d like to appear on the show after the primaries? I’d guess that was the reason to set up where they were - so they could get on film an invite to appear.
Do you not recall how some farleft sights threatened any candidates who would appear on Fox? That has since dissipated as Sen Biden, Sen Kucinich and others have appeared on O’Reilly’s show. Hillary steadfastly refuses - she pretty much refuses to take questions from the audience at many of the NH events. Sen Obama had been invited on - and his press person turned down the requests. But now it’s changed.
BTW - When Sen Kerry appeared on BOR after the last election he said it was a big mistake not to come on right before the election. The show has the largest audience in that cable time slot and Kerry said he thought reaching that many people - and getting treated the way he does on the show - could have turned the votes in some key states.
“Like” the guy or not is irrelevant. Lots of people across the political spectrum tune in to hear his interviews.
Didn’t Obama give a speech the other day decrying the kind of namecalling you just used? It’s a new day, Goldie. Remember?

Since I have no idea what situation you were referring to with the “situation/fault” comment, I’ll assume is was mortgage related with the housing problems going on now. So the question is, if a person signs up for a loan on a house they really can’t afford and is unable to make the payments, WHOSE FAULT IS IT? Who, other then them, do you feel is responsible for managing the finances in their home? Is that Obama’s responsibility? Should he create a “Department of Financial Responsibility” to make financial decisions for people who can’t make good decisions on their own? At what point in your socialist/communist world are people responsible for their own decisions?
BTW, the word you were looking for in your post is “empathy”, not “apathy”. Not sure if you figured that out from RW’s post. My 2nd grader probably can’t help you with that one, but my 8th grader could.
One more question for you. Will you back up your claims and answer the questions, or will you continue your pattern of changing the subject and calling people names? Put up or shut up lightweight.

Did you see the Jan 7 panel about “change?”
Regarding the McCain panel - I have sympathy for some of his positions. I think McCain-Feingold, aside from its objectives, is a good example of opposing parties working together for what they see as the common good. I’ve said before - I think McCain’s experience in the 2000 primaries with the Bush money machine had quite an impact on him. As I’ve observed - I really don’t see the fundamental difference between a campaign contribution (particularly a large one) and a bribe.

I found the national security article long on a certain view of history, much rehash of where we are and how we got there, and even at the end, very, very little on what, specifically, the author says should be a progressive strategy.
He laid out a view on what, specifically, did not work. He was thin on what would.
This line cracked me up: “A conservative line of argument that centers on conventional military action ignores two key fundamental factors. First, non-state terrorist groups use asymmetrical warfare and media campaigns as a primary means to advance their agendas.”
That’s almost exactly what ex SecDef Rumsfeld said in 2000 - and why the generals, career bureaucracy and many industrialists hated him!
Oh, and please remember Administration attempt to counter jihadists’ assymetrical media campaigns. Progressives did nothing but complain about civil liberties (even in cases where actions was directed overseas) and offered nothing in its place.
People know what didn’t work. They also know what happened when they bought the “trust me, we’ll be better line” when they voted Democratic in 2006. They need to offer more compelling reasons now.

RB, it’s simple. I’ve told you already but you refuse to listen because you always have your thumbs in your ears with your fat mouth open shouting, “I’M NOT LISTENING! I’M NOT LISTENING!”
The war, which has been a huge mistake from the beginning, is a HUGE financial burden on this country and its people. The war so far, has cost $600 billon, but that doesn’t include the yearly budget of over $700 billion in the Defense department. The current estimates have shown that the true cost of the war may be over 2.3 trillion dollars. A war Busch&Co. said would cost no more than $50 billion dollars. A war they said would pay for itself. We all know the old saying, “If it sounds to good to be true, then it probably is.” What did they do to make us feel better about going along with the war? They cut taxes of course, and told us to go shopping! Well, the tax cuts created a $239 billion budget deficit. So where do we get all of that money for the war? China and other US hating countries! So, the national debt gets higher and higher. It’s over $9 trillion dollars now. That’s over $30,000 for every man, woman, and child in America. This of course weakens the dollar, which we have seen. This leads to increases in oil prices as the dollar doesn’t have the buying power like it used to. That turns in to higher cost for pretty much everything that uses oil in some fashion. People start to have less money in their pockets to buy “stuff”. The economy starts to slow, job growth slows and we start to see signs of a recession. Your own favorite president had to admit yesterday that they country may be heading in to a recession. And many other business firms have warned about it saying there is now a 50% chance that the US will head into recession.
So, I guess it is still the American people’s fault that their goods are so expensive, and that the dollar is weak? It was their fault for dishonest home equity companies causing them to lose their homes? It is our fault that our president has committed us to a war that we will never be able to pay off, or that other countries essential own us? It is the policies of the Republican Party that have almost sent this country in to financial ruin, and you want to point the finger at families. Bush&Co. have unfairly put the burden of his failed policies on the backs of working American, and you expect us to be happy about it, like this is some sort of gift.

There has been a bit of discussion on clarifying the jurisdiction clause.
Fourteenth Amendment. Section one.
“Section 1. All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the state wherein they reside.”
While custom in the law has been all persons born here are citizens, the 14th states the people need to be subject to US jurisdiction. Argument goes, people are here not under the jurisdiction of the US (presence is outside of legal means) so citizenship of children born is open to question.
I’ll predict we’ll see a lot of misrepresentation and charges of “racism” to obscure the issue on this one.

Woot, Here’s another lesson for you lightweight. The President of the United States does not have the authority to take this nation to war without the approval of congress. The congress of this nation, while looking at the evidence and the situation, made the decision to authorize this war. No one man got us into this on his own. We as a nation did this. To suggest that Bush and Cheney alone are to blame is just plain dishonest. It’s a lie, lightweight. Our government does not work that way.
But I guess you think we should just walk away now and to hell with the people of Iraq, eh? I mean, you’ve got your little slice of heaven all snug in your police protected city, right? Let them take on these terrorists with guns who would like to run the country themselves. They can always throw sand in their faces, right? Do you care about people or not, woot? You’re dual positions are confusing. Or do you only care about people who vote for democrats?

This cartoon was actually good - although still poorly drawn. Bill is so ugly it only IMPROVES his looks. However, it is true that when Clinton campaigns for others, especially his wife, it tends to hurt them. This has been true throughout his career. He is great at promoting himself - so good at it, in fact, that he does it at the expense of everyone else. If he really wants to come back as co-president, then he needs to go home to Chapaqua and be with his mistress(es)!!

No, there is a difference; First, Bush used false and baseless intelligence for his push to war with Iraq. He used Powell at the UN for the push to war. Powell has later expressed regret for doing what he did at the UN. There is so much documentation out there that the evidence used to go to war were out-right lies. It was the same lies that lead the Congress to vote for authorization for war. Many have regretted ever voting for that war. Just because you change your mind doesn’t make you any less of a person.
The Second part was the blunders of the CPA in Iraq and the policies that they enacted. The biggest policy failures of the CPA was the policy of de-Baathification. This is the policy that essentially fired the military, the police, and pretty much any professional worker in Iraq. The Iraqi army was waiting there to work with Bush, but they fired him. They had no job, no money, and a family to support. What else did you expect them to do, sit around with their thumbs of their butts? So, we have no professionals like doctors, and engineers that have fled the country, and the Iraqi army that knows the locations of weapon depots.
Third, we have the disastrous “rebuilding” effort in Iraq where nothing is getting completed, or is unsafe to live or work in. These people have hardly any running water, and maybe an hour of electricity today.
Oh, and lets not forget about Blackwater and all the fun they have had.
So you tell me, should they be grateful that we are there after we have screwed so much up?
Have you ever considered reading some of President Eisenhower’s speeches? “…use our power in the interests of world peace and human betterment” ring a bell?

I would say that the namejacker is mocking ITFS more than imitating him.
That being said, namejacking has been the source of all the troubles with this blog from day 1.
So what did the libs at the AJC do to fix the problem?
Over time they removed real time posting, limited the posting hours, took away bolding and italics even though they still make the claim you can use them, set up a delay so that you couldn’t post comments within a few minutes of each other (Polly shows them how good a job they did at that one every day), and limited the number of links within a post.
Everything except tying a nickname to an email address to eliminate the only real problem they ever had.

As I’ve said before, the “why aren’t their family serving” is a glib, soundbite, silly argument:
If one supports medical assistance to poor countries or the African continent, do we check to see how many family members are in Doctors Without Borders?
If one supports lifeskills assistance to impoverished countries, do we check to see how many family members are in Peace Corps?
If one supports education in poor sections, do we see how many family members are teachers in disadvantaged schools?
Do we check to see how many family members of Sens Biden or Sen Hillary are in the military? They want to invade Sudan. Pakistan too, I believe. Or is it only if there’s a foreign policy issue with which we disagree?
Take it a bit further. If Romney did have family members serving, and they were Navy, you’d still complain. Because they have zip risk of harm. Pretty much same with AF. Remember, if you’re going to discuss casualties, it’s a //volunteer// force. People decide if they want to serve or not, and if so, which branch. Then they decide which specialty, knowing full well the risks they face. They’re adults. Don’t condescend to treating soldiers like schoolchildren.

Yes, ITN, they have mountains and other surface imperfections, but I think most people would consider a golf ball and a basketball to be round as well even though they also have a less than perfect surface. The question remains valid, however. You can’t tell me something randomly blew up and created a bunch of generally round fragments by chance. Surely at least one of them would have turned out rather odd shaped. Somehow, in our solar system, that doesn’t seem to have happened.
I suppose 1 or 2 of the particles might have turned out rather round, 3 on an outside chance, but 9 plus the moons??? Come on….

The big bang did not form the planets. It only created the material, essentially hydrogen, and a very small portion of helium, that made it possible for the formation of starts that led to the eventual development of the planets. It was gravity that led formation of the planets.
But, hey, lets just through out our understanding of the four fundamental forces, math, logic, and reasoning.

Always read “uber” with a smile. Kind of a ping thing.
Sending material goods is not the same as personally being on site and doing the work. I just think it’s a phony argument designed more to cast aspersions on political advocates than meant as an honest policy position.
I think it’s great Sen Biden’s son decided to serve. And his Guard unit went to Iraq. Army, even. But JAGs are usually rear echelon types… If he was really, really serving he’d be an infantry officer (insert snark and uber here).

I rarely speak in absolutes. By “personalizing” I don’t mean not counting the human cost and impact. I mean making foreign policy on the basis of “how will it affect my family.” FDR was a good example of this. He knew America’s involvement in WWII (sidebar - it it’d been today, and he’d been a Rep, Dems would have had a field day with his pre-Dec 7 actions) could get his sons killed. But he made his decision based upon what he saw as best for the country.
Before someone goes off on the “but his kids served” tangent - WWII required national mobilization, a draft, etc. Different circumstances. Today we have an all-volunteer force, a concept I support.

RB, I guess you’ve never heard of nucleosynthesis, and supernova nucleosynthesis then. The heavey elements found in the planets are formed in the cores of massive stars and in the supernova of stars. Stars that are massive enough, once burned they have through their hydrogen fuel, can burn elements and fuse them up to as heavy as Iron and Nickel. Once this stage is met, the star dies in either a supernova or throughs off its layers in a planetary nebula. Once the “ash” from the star has been cast in to space it is then used in the formation of new stars and our solar system.

IMO the discussion should never be about how the Iraqi people are better off without Hussein. The real discussion should focus on what triggered the US to attack Iraq.
At the time the US was swept up in a wave of uber-nationalism as a result of 9/11, so a majority seemed to respond positively when our government rattled its saber in the direction of Iraq. After all, we appeared to have OBL on the run after a quick overthrow of the mighty Taliban.
But the excuse for invading Iraq (WMD’s) was trumped up. And Iraq was no threat to the USA. Israel had a vested interest in seeing Iraq suffer ignominious defeat (or any other neighbor, for that matter). But perhaps we’ll never know the real reason(s).
When no WMD’s were found, the excuse became “bringing Democracy to the Middle East”. That rings hollow since US allies Jordan, Egypt, and arguably, Israel are not true democracies.
So this “right to wage pre-emptive war” is valid even if the initial premise is wrong? Who is held accountable? No one if you carry the biggest stick (read: if you are the biggest bully). And this constitutes our foreign policy? While we have become the world’s biggest debtor nation?
At least we can say we were there when the sh!t hit the fan and American influence became a memory.

I did get the idea of the concept, however, but it doesn’t explain how all the planets could pull matter from the same debris field with gravitational forces and end up with different composition. Maybe you can paraphrase a slightly more comprehedable answer to that?

Wish I could tell you of the wines at Christmas, should have saved the labels. Much French (good Bordeaux is like crack) and a few Italians tossed in. My brother also brought along some Jamon Iberico ham (the acorn-fed Spanish ham). Wonderful time. I trust yours was well.
Try looking at the Iraq thing independent of administrations. We’d been dealing with Hussein for years. We’d been told of nuke planning, WMD stockpiles, etc etc for years. Then they were gone. Then the capability remained. Then they turned up again. It went on and on.
Simultaneously we endured probes by OBL and treated it as a criminal matter. Again, this had been going on for years. Then came 9-11.
Do I think people like Perle, Feith, Wolfowitz, were looking for an excuse to take out Hussein? Sure. But absent this, risk assessments of “what are the capabilities, they’ll do anything, civilians in the USA are targets, who will supply them, how many more thousands could die” were alarming. Just the idea of “who hates us, who has used chem weapons, who could hand them off” made Hussein a target to consider.
The democracy thing: we knew jihadist intentions. Some say engaging them in Iraq played into their hands. A case can be made. But their intention was to overthrow corrupt mideast regimes preparatory to their caliphate dreams. Then engage the West. Several countries had been dealing - harshly - with jihadists for years. Others - Saudi Arabia - bought them off to keep them engaged out of country. I think even some of these regimes were shaken by al Qaeda’s organization, resources and infrastructure. Which made them feel even more threatened.
Had there been any good transition to democracy models there? Nope. So add onto Iraq the idea of a (we thought) secular society, no intertribal conflict, an educated society, a despised dictator - what better place to raise a new government and provide a safety valve model for the other countries in their “preserve the monarchy/government or go Islamist” situation? Or so we thought.
So I think there were a lot of intertwining factors occurring. And a lot of terribly, ignorantly, arrogantly wrong assumptions. And a number of tremendous failures by our Administration. And intelligence agencies. And the military. And State.
Next Pres is going to have a real job on his hands.

R.E. Iraq, I really do try to separate the Iraq debacle from the administration. Unfortunately, it happened on this administration’s “watch”, so to speak. It is easy to say when one is blogging anonymously that one was against invading Iraq…but I was. It was the wrong thing to do at the time. And I am certain that most of those responsible for making the decision to actually invade are smarter than I, and had more information at their disposal.
But then when was the last time any elected official acknowledged a policy mistake? They are quick to admit their sins. In fact they often wear their sins like medals (If you haven’t been caught doing…yada, yada…).
Instead people continue to die and the outcome is certain to be to the disadvantage of the US.
Yes, our next President will have his/her hands full, to say the least.
And RB….it really doesn’t suck to be a liberal. Blessed are the poor…blessed are the meek…don’t look for any compassion in people who tell you they are compassionate!

al-Gitmo: If Mexico were taking Chinese embassy workers hostage, threatening to develop a nuclear weapon so that they could launch them at China and were flying airplanes into Chinese skyscrapers, I believe your little scenario, if played out in the real world, would be the U.S. invading Mexico.
And while we are out of the fever swamps, I find it hard to believe that the Chinese would set sail with enough ships and troops on board to invade Mexico, and that they wouldn’t all be sunk to the ocean floor just a few miles off their own coast.
Navy pilots dream about things like that.
And what would “president” Klintoon have done with the Iranians, surrendered to them?
Would you libs have marveled at It’s “restraint” and laud it for being the perfect little pacifist?
Personally, I hope they try it again, you can believe our Navy’s standing orders have been, uh, modified.

Sorry, I was in a hurry and the sentence should have read as: “Stars that are massive enough, once they have burned through their hydrogen fuel, can burn heavier elements and fuse them up to as heavy as Iron and Nickel.”
This means that the star starts off “burning” (nuclear fusion) hydrogen which is fused to helium which is burned and fused to carbon. Next it goes to oxygen, neon, silicon, sulfur, Iron, and nickel. The heavier the element, the more massive the star needs to be to use it as fuel.
This is how the elements that make up the planets are formed.
I didn’t have to look this up. Most 8th graders are expected to learn this in science class. So, this is something that you should know. If you want to look up planet formation, google “Planetary formation”, and “frost line”.

I appreciate your points here. May I quibble a bit with the valid illustration you made using FDR as exemplar? FDR had Hopkins pull strings to keep his boys out of harm’s way. I know this because I knew his eldest, the late Congressman James R., who was enormously ashamed of it and who tried hard, and with some fine success, to get into the fight. What most upset Jimmy was that his father had given orders to keep his own clan trumped up in the press while meanwhile the military papers were under tacit orders to ignore TR’s children, notably Ted, a brilliant soldier who was the most highly decorated U.S. infantry officer of the war. (The guy who went unarmed to become the ranking brass on the Normandy beaches in the first wave.) But your example still holds, though unfortunately it also holds for TR’s enthusiastic support of U.S. entry into WWI, which support he later rued when he lost his beloved youngest child, Quentin, to an airplane crash that occurred simply because of Quentin’s lifelong desire to please and impress his father.

It may be simplistic, but we really do need change…SIGNIFICANT change!
Perhaps Obama or R. Paul can make that happen. I’m not real enthused about Ron Paul…I think he tends to think he is messianic. He just doesn’t advertise it.
Obama is mostly an unknown quantity. Yet I suspect when he says that he wants to reach across the aisles, he means that he will compromise his position in order to achieve his objectives. When Bush said he wants to reach across the aisles, he always means that he expects the opposition to endorse his position.
At this point, it’s Obama!!

Unfortunately, I didn’t know what the appetizers were (there were over 20 of us) so we were snacking on that along with the different shrimps and such. But it was a nice accent to the company.
No real joy in that hindsight, is there? Smarter people? Doubtful. More information? Sure - but much was wrong (and had been repeated at truth for years) and much was, I think, assumptions masquerading as facts.
Admit a mistake? I just heard, the other night, a Dem operative tell a talking head “never, ever admit a mistake.” I do hope that’s one of the changes Obama’s talking about.
What concerns me is the process by which all this occurred. And what has changed. Intel agencies? Reform, maybe - but the real budget power wasn’t changed. Much is still concentrated in the Pentagon. Homeland Security? Oh, please. State? Still rather hidebound by my way of thinking. Military? Lots of good counterinsurgency thought and changed practices in the Army. But where the $$$ go - not a lot changed. Gen Petraeus was head of the last Army general’s board (select colonels for general). We’ll see from those promoted if that institution was really willing to change in a meaningful way. Other services? (Navy, AF) - business as usual. As well as Congress’s and buying big-ticket stuff for their constituencies.
But Iraq deaths are down. Iraqi cooperation is on the increase (motives aside).
But I fear our mideast presence will be much larger than it needs to be. For a long time, regardless of who is President.
Maybe when the fuel economy standards kick in in 2020, and when the current crop of guzzlers stop running…

What the movie doesn’t mention is that Ted died from a massive heart attack four or five days earlier, in his tent near the beach, in which tent his soldier brother and nurse sister had just visited him, and in which he received news of his award of the medal of honor.
Ted also co-founded the American Legion.

It was the magnitude of Ted’s achievement that embarrassed James so much. Two big differences between James and Franklin were that the former was a Republican willing to admit his reverence for Theodore and his enormous admiration for Theodore’s children. James aged and died humiliated by his beloved father’s general pettiness.
