“What were they smoking?” asks the cover of the current issue of Fortune magazine. Underneath the headline are photos of recently deposed Wall Street titans, captioned with the staggering sums they managed to lose. The answer, of course, is that they were high on the usual drug — greed. And they were encouraged to make socially destructive decisions by a system of executive compensation that should have been reformed after the Enron and WorldCom scandals, but wasn’t.

On another note, Democrats and Republicans thrashed Bill Clinton yesterday for claiming he’s been opposed to the Iraq war since it started - a whopper that flies in the face of many of his previous public comments. .
Even Barack said [Asked about the reversal yesterday, Sen. Barack Obama laughed off Clinton’s alleged opposition to the war.

Tough guy Republicans are really afraid of questions from real Americans
by Joe Sudbay (DC) · 11/30/2007 08:38:00 AM ET
The right wingers are in a frenzy over the CNN YouTube debate. In their world view, it’s somehow diabolical that real Americans, some of whom were Democrats, submitted questions to the candidates. The GOPers have gotten used to watching Bush live in his his bubble where’s he only greeted by adoring fans. Apparently, right wingers only want their candidates to be insulated from anything except immigration bashing and supporting Bush’s war in Iraq — and top GOP operative Grover Norquist who managed to get a question.
Seriously, how are any of these wimps going to stand up to Al Qaeda if they can’t even take a tough question from a Democrat?

Shawny,
Sorry. No Huckabee ‘08, no Rudy, no Mitt, no Republican at all.
They and by extension, you have had every day since 2000 to do what’s right for this country. The results are just showing themselves for the disaster they are and will be. I’m going to take the Jim Wooten tack, when I and my band of happy liberals are in charge anyone that voted twice for Dumbya will not be allowed to vote for 16 years. They just don’t have the intellectual capacity to be trusted.

Where can I file my complaint ml? Housing sales in my county went into a slump nine years ago.
Why? We had a bunch of BOE members who could do nothing but fight while the quality of education declined. That and the crime rate increased.
Building an over abundance of affordable housing was the solution. As a result it’s only gotten worse.
In twenty years we’ve only had two Republicans run for county commissioner. Both were defeated.

Any vote for a Repug in ‘08 is a vote for NO CHANGE in America’s direction… the Repugs have no vision for America other than maintaining the status quo and for big business to rule our gov’t policies. STUPID, STUPID, STUPID.
2008 is the time for America to “rediscover how to be a smart power”:
The United States needs to rediscover how to be a “smart power.” That was the conclusion of a bipartisan commission that I recently co-chaired with Richard Armitage, the former deputy secretary of state in the Bush administration. A group of Republican and Democratic members of Congress, former ambassadors, retired military officers and heads of non-profit organizations was convened by the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington. We concluded that America’s image and influence had declined in recent years, and that the United States had to change from exporting fear to inspiring optimism and hope.

Good morning fellow bloggers.
To me there is a fundamental difference as regards this upcoming election between the dwindling Bush apologists, neo-cons and right wing Republicans and the rest of the country.
The question for the Bushbots is, will the country be worse off with a Democrat at the helm. And for everybody else the question is will the country be better off.
As this incompetent, arrogant GOP has set the bar so amazingly low, it would seem that the answer is obvious.
And for me personally, it is hard to even imagine another administration that could fail as miserably, across the board, as this one has.

You’re missing the point entirely.
CNN is incompetent when it comes to vetting their sources and since most liberal’s get their news from CNN, their incompetence is passed along through you.
Most of the comment I’m hearing is that the Republican candidates did great in fielding the questions — planted or not. It was definitely one of the better debates and that includes those I’ve seen from the Democrats.

This morning, former White House chief of staff at the time, Andrew Card, appeared on MSNBC’s Morning Joe and completely discredited Rove’s argument:
SCARBOROUGH: We have to start with something that we all are talking about a couple of days ago where Karl Rove went on Charlie Rose and he blamed the Democrats for pushing him and the president into war. Is that how it worked?
CARD: No, that’s not the way it worked.
Card went on to explain that sometimes Rove’s “mouth gets ahead of his brain”:
SCARBOROUGH: Is that just Karl spinning beyond the White House? …
CARD: Well, Karl is very smart. He’s — sometimes his brain gets ahead of his mouth. And sometimes his mouth gets ahead of his brain.

WASHINGTON — The Bush administration and major financial institutions are close to agreeing on a plan that would temporarily freeze interest rates on certain troubled subprime home loans, according to people familiar with the negotiations.
Hopefully some good news on the horizon. It comes down to when the banks want to lose money, either it is now or it is later. Expect an industry wide immunity for the banks if they take this plan, what they are planning on doing is illegal and opens them up to lawsuits by investors. Funny thing about that, if anyone has followed news out of Ohio, a few federal district judges have started throwing out foreclosures because the lenders do not have standing if they sold the loan to investors. If anyone is in a situation where they might be facing an eminent foreclosure, it would be in your interest to get a lawyer instead of just letting the bank go foward. The bank may not have standing.

Watching the Repug debate was pretty scary. The candidates were pretty scary in themselves, but what was even scarier was watching all those looney right wingers in the audience and those submitting questions on Youtube. That Bible thumper who waved his King James in front of the camera and asked the question about the candidates’ belief in the Bible reminded me of a fundamentalist Muslim and his Koran. The fact that such assinine issues were even discussed showed me that the Repug party is not anywhere I’d like to be.

I liked the planted tough questions on the debate. Too bad it didn’t work the other way in the Dem debate. Read that Peggy Noonan piece, where she imagines hard hitting questions like “Mrs. Clinton, Mr. Obama, Mr. Edwards, this is a human fetus. Given a few more months, it will be a baby you could hold in your arms. You all say you’re ‘for the children.’ I would ask you to look America in the eye and tell us how you can support laws to end this life. Thank you.”
Now that would work the same as those ridiculous planted questions like ‘do you believe what is in THIS BOOK?’, ‘what do you think of this flag?’, or any of that kind of crap.

ITFS et al,
The only problem with the debate is that most of the questions were on issues of interest to Democrats and we’re supposed to be in the process of selecting a Republican nominee. Fortunately Republicans keep themselves informed so we didn’t really need another debate/joint press conference to hone in on our selections.
It was interesting to see them have to think on their feet and our guys did a fine job.

Through their ethics scandals, Republicans in Washington long ago began making the word “conservative” synonymous with the term “corrupt.” Surprisingly, though, it is a group of Democrats that is cementing this definitional conversion for good. In the midst of the housing crisis, a cadre of self-described “conservative” Democrats called the Blue Dog Coalition is demanding congressional leaders delay legislation designed to help people trapped in high-interest loans stay in their homes and avoid foreclosure. The bill, House Resolution 3609, allows judges to ameliorate the terms of abusive “subprime” mortgages. Rep. Brad Miller, D-N.C., is championing it—a gutsy move for a lawmaker whose state domiciles major lenders. The Blue Dogs say they oppose Miller’s initiative out of concern for the integrity of the 2005 Bankruptcy Bill—a telling justification. Under that odious law, millionaires can shield their mansions from creditors, and corporate executives (think: Enron guys) can prevent ripped-off shareholders and employees from seizing their holdings. Harvard’s Elizabeth Warren notes that the law also “permits people with vacation homes and investment property to rework their mortgages in bankruptcy.” But regular homeowners? Sorry—without Miller’s legislation, judges are barred from defending you against the vultures.

{{{{What is notable, however, is what a hash CNN is making in this long election season of its self-described reputation as “the first name in news.” In two successive debates now, CNN has made editorial decisions that range from the bizarre to the scandalous. The bizarre conduct came in the Democratic debate in Nevada two weeks ago, which concluded with a bubbly young woman asking a vapid question about whether Hillary Clinton preferred diamonds or pearls. When that young woman came under withering assault for wasting time with something so stupid, she said she had wanted to ask about nuclear-waste removal but that a CNN producer had pushed her to come up with something lighter.}}}}
{{{{The scandalous aspect last night is that three Democratic operatives were allowed to pose as “unaffiliated voters” asking questions specifically designed to embarrass the entire Republican party, not just the candidates on stage. Given the fact that it took bloggers all of 12 seconds to figure this out, one has to ask how on earth CNN producers didn’t think to do the elementary spade work of simply Googling the names of the questioners to ensure they met the “unaffiliated voter” standard CNN and YouTube had set out.}}}}

sorry for the double…
This time, from the Washington Post regarding the CNN screwup.
One item I find interesting, is the the left leaning, but mostly factual Post confirmed that Hillary disclosed that that retired general is on her steering committee on gay and lesbian issues.
Yet, she said that he “is not a campaign employee and was not acting on behalf of the Clinton campaign.”
So, if he isn’t an employee (read: volunteer) and he acted on his own with this, then he should be removed from her campaign for infiltrating the GOP debate with the planted question, right? Hmmmm…follow this one to see if she tosses him out.

Let’s take a deep breath here. Say, hypothetically, we here at The Carpetbagger Report decided to host a presidential forum, and I invited readers to submit questions for the candidates. Once I had a complete list, I’d go through them and pick the ones that seemed interesting, provocative, policy-oriented, relevant, etc. The goal would be to produce a spirited, though-provoking discussion. Would I do background checks to see where the questioners interned years ago? Probably not, because it doesn’t matter. Whether questions came from candidates’ harshest critics or their own family members is largely irrelevant — the point is to consider the questions themselves on the merit.

Anyone else notice how simple the new fed chairman sounds when he enunciates economic and monetary policy compared to how Greenspan sounded? See the markets react to perceived good news? No wonder Greenspan talked in code, (econobonics, if you will).
I think that the new fed chairman unwittingly manipulating the markets and a price-whiplash effect is taking place putting the entire stock market system in jeopardy. This is the one sin Greenspan went out of his way to avoid.

BAGHDAD — As U.S. forces begin to scale back in Iraq, the military is becoming increasingly reliant on Iraqi forces to report a wide array of crucial statistics, from the number of attacks on the local infrastructure to how many Iraqi civilians have been killed or wounded. And just as Iraqi forces have had a mixed record in fighting insurgents, they have been spotty at providing data from the regions where they have taken command.
Iraqi officials have been reporting far higher civilian death totals than those reported by U.S. forces, and aides to American commanders now acknowledge that the U.S. military probably had been undercounting such casualties

I see where some Republicans are literally calling for a “do-over” on the you tube debate. One wonders how the will advertise for new questions?
Have you ever had a liberal thought in your head?
Are you related to somebody whose last name is Kennedy?
Do you agree with everything ever done by any Republican going back to the time of Rome?
Are you wearing a blue shirt?
Please, ladies and gentlemen, if one side can’t ask the other side questions we do not have democracy.

John Q. Public - The question that I would ask you is whether or not you had ever had an intelligent thought in your head. Liberal thoughts - socialism, universal health care, isolationism and being soft on crime, terrorism etc… does not exactly make you intelligent. It makes you either incredibly short-sighted or what you are implying about conservatives. I have had a few liberal thoughts, mostly in my youth, but they died quickly because I analyzed the issues from all angles and realized the fallacies of those beliefs. I did not so much mind the questions as I minded the fact that they were planted and that it was an attempt to embarass and sandbag the candidates. I also mind the fact that had something like that happened to the Democrats you and your ilk would be screaming bloody murder about the unfairness of it all - just as you did when Hitlery was asked ONE simple yes or no question by LIBERAL Tim Russert.
Go read National Review or the Weekly Standard and broaden your horizons. I do read liberal journals like the AJC and The New Republic, so I KNOW what the other side thinks, and it is STILL WRONG!!!

The rumors are swirling that Hillary might consider asking Colin Powell to be her VP and that Obama may be considering NY Mayor Michael Bloomberg. Weird but interesting notions for each candidate. Pohell isn’t exactly loved by Democrats, and he really screwed President Clinton, his commander in chief, to the tune of insubordination in the early 90s. Odd that there might be a rapprochement with the Clintons now. I’m not sure Hillary can or should trust Powell. And it’s an interesting question, though not a very PC one, as to whether America will take kindly to the first woman president and first black vice president being on the same ticket (and even if they wouldn’t, is that a reason not to do the ticket?) As for Obama, also a bit odd, talk of him considering a Republican, albeit a very moderate kind of Democrat one, isn’t going to thrill party regulars.

The Surge: Sunnis join our side, thus formally splitting Iraq into Sunni vs Shia, (and we’ve chosen the Sunnis in this 10K year old civil war, or they chose us, either way, we are formally committed to fight with the Sunnis against the democratically elected Shia government. I know what you’re thinking: How can the 1.4K year old islamic factions have a 10K year old civil war? THE VIOLENT RADICALIZATION AND HOMEGROWN TERRORISM PREVENTION ACT: An Act passed by The House in late October and currently before the Senate Homeland Security Committee is as bad as or WORSE than anything from the McCarthy/HUAC Era. Language in the act partially defines “homegrown terrorism” as “planning” or “threatening” to use force to promote a political objective, meaning that just thinking about doing something could be enough to merit being labeled a terrorist. The act also describes “violent radicalization” as the promotion of an “extremist belief system” without attempting to define “extremist.” Note Section 899A Homegrown Terrorism where it becomes a crime “to intimidate or coerce the US government, the civilian population or any segment thereof, in furtherance of political or social objective”. And Section 899B Paragraph 3 – The internet is a tool of terror!

Even Mara Liasson, political correspondent for NPR, said she sees a real difference in how media – particularly CNN, but including other media – pose hard questions to Rep candidates that challenge fundamental positions, yet they regularly “softball” questions to Dem candidates, not challenging fundamental Democratic positions or assumptions. That’s the larger issue.

So from that, your following paragraph (implying only a Dem is an alternative) is a bit of a bait, isn’t it?

UNITED NATIONS - In an about face, the United States on Friday withdrew a U.N. resolution endorsing this week’s agreement by Israeli and Palestinian leaders to try to reach a Mideast peace settlement by the end of 2008, apparently after Israel objected. Deputy Ambassador Alejandro Wolff informed the Security Council that the United States was pulling the resolution from consideration less than 24 hours after Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad had introduced it and welcomed the “very positive” response from council members. Khalilzad had said he needed to consult with the Israelis and Palestinians overnight on the text of the resolution to ensure it was what they wanted. Well-informed diplomats said Israel, a close U.S. ally, did not want a resolution, which would bring the Security Council into the fledgling negeotiations with the Palestinians. The diplomats spoke on condition of anonymity because the discussions were private.

(((Pakistan: Kayani Begins Consolidating Power)))
(((In many ways, this is not an unexpected move. First, a new chief of the army staff is expected to reshuffle the deck, bringing in his own people to begin consolidating his hold over the military institution. Second, in the last reshuffle — which took place in early October, when Vice Chief of the Army Staff Gen. Ahsan Saleem Hyat and Joints Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Ehsan-ul- Haq retired — Musharraf only made partial changes in the top brass. This also was when Musharraf appointed Kayani as his deputy and successor.)))
(((That said, Kayani’s reshuffle is significant because it will replace Musharraf loyalists with his own, which will lead to the gradual weakening of Musharraf’s hold over the army. Given the critical role played by corps commanders and intelligence directors in the Pakistani military establishment, Kayani will bring in people who will not just help him solidify his position as military chief, but also play a key role in steering the army out of the political crisis and dealing with the jihadist insurgency. His move to replace ISI sector commanders is in keeping with his strong desire to purge the military/intelligence complex of jihadist sympathizers.)))
And Bhutto is now saying she won’t boycott the upcoming elections.
Kayani, a loyal and trusted advisor to Musharraf is appointed by Musharraf when his political stability begins to crumble. He also assists in orchestrating an alliance between Musharraf and Bhutto, who he once served under.
Musharraf steps down as military leader. Kayani finishes the job of restructuring the military leaving signs of no former connections to Musharraf.

(((But recent elections have returned the Orange coalition to power, Gazprom now has to pay more for its natural gas, and Ukraine’s current contract with Gazprom expires at the end of the year. It is almost inevitable that a fresh natural gas fight between Moscow and Kiev will erupt. The last time this happened, Russia reduced natural gas flows to Ukraine. But since supplies to downstream states in Central and Western Europe transit Ukraine and Ukraine kept taking gas from the network, many of those downstream states suffered supply reductions. Suddenly a pricing spat with officials locked in mutual dislike with Russia turned into a continent-wide geopolitical rift.)))

BTW, Jim Jones called his group of koolaid drinkers a religion too. Would you gladly stand by him and praise him as your fellow countryman too? Open your eyes, idiot. That’s right folks, this weekend you can choose from among our 27 Farm Fresh ingredients and have us make your own perfect burger! And who knows, if your burger turns out to be other people’s favorite too, we’ll keep the delicious thing on our New Menu and name it after you!
Think of it: your very own signature hamburger right there among Tiny’s World Famous Classics!
Classics like The Thinking Man’s Whopper, a tribute to candidate Clinton’s memorable Tiny visit of 1992, when Governor Bill ate not one, but two pairs of buns with relish, and just the right touch of pork smothered in our signature Down Home Sauce and topped with enough cheese to challenge the fortitude of a Joseph A. Bank!
As with all our burgers, the Thinking Whopper offers your choice of two delectible favorites: dry-aged beef or, a Clinton favorite, fresh Spring veal. Y-y-yUM-M-MM.
When you show your coupon at the door you’ll automatically qualify to win an all-expense paid luxury trip for two to Davos, Switzerland, to attend this year’s Buildaburger Cook-off Invitational!
Imagine the two of you, strutting your taste buds with the World’s top burger builders—giants like John Kerry and Bill and Hillary Clinton rubbing elbows with burger Hall of Famers like Paul Wolfowitz and David Rockefeller!
You’d even be eligible to compete with the very best for Bildaburger Nation’s most coveted award, the Internationalist Cup, “Prize of the Oligarchs”!

W is for worst,
I’ve answered that question for dozens of people on this blog over the years. I’m not sure why you have your panties in a twist over a question you asked somebody else that I didn’t answer for you, but here you go.
I’ll have to assume you’re using 91 as 1991 and when Saddam agreed to certain terms of cease fire. Saddam didn’t live up to those terms and in 1998 Bill Clinton bombed them and signed a bill making it the law of the land that the United States would seek regime change in Iraq.
Back in 1995 the United Nations set up the Oil For Food program which allowed Saddam to sell oil supposedly so that Iraqis wouldn’t starve, but he soon corrupted that program enriching his military stockpiles and held off further sanctions by bribing our so called friends in Germany, France, and Russia. These countries were working to get the sanctions completely lifted against Saddam.
The real tipping point was September 11, 2001 when we realized that sanctions and military containment were not the safety net we had hoped for. When inspectors were sent back in 2002 Iraq was very uncooperative and never did produce the documented proof of the dismantling of the weapons programs and the destruction of any source material.
He was given one last chance by a vote of the Congress and was also given 48 hours to step down and avoid war. A defiant Saddam caused us to attack and end any potential threat from there.
