Well, so much for the Bush is a liar crying jag:
{{{{In the Oval Office, without saying whether interrogators use waterboarding, Bush said, “The American people must know that whatever techniques we use are within the law.”-Urinal}}}}
He’s telling you to your faces, morons.
He could have lied about it, bill Klintoon style and then just did it anyway, but he is being honest about their interpretation of the Constitution.
So now it is a matter for the Courts, not a bunch of whining pinko grandstanders:
{{{{If Democrats want to strip the CIA of this tool, then they ought to legislate it openly, not make law under the table through the confirmation process. Congress has twice had the chance to ban or criminalize waterboarding, but it declined to do so in both the Detainee Treatment Act of 2005 and the Military Commissions Act of 2006. And not for lack of trying: In debating the Military Commissions Act, Ted Kennedy offered a detailed amendment that specifically prohibited waterboarding, as well as other coercive interrogation methods; it lost on the Senate floor, 46-53.}}}}
~~~~~
Just further proof of how much liberals hate America and do not want to see us become strong and prosperous:
{{{{Safety issues at Alabama nuke plant- Screaming Front Page Urinal Headline}}}}
No one has ever died from Nuclear Power in the United States, no one.
Nuclear Energy does not pollute the environment.
Nuclear Energy does not kill coal miners.
I’m sure this story there is more to this story than the urinal has printed and we will never see a follow up to it, because it wasn’t news in the first place.
But all of the numbnut, mindless goony liberals, the stupid target audience of the AJC, will remember the screaming headline and will whine and moan on cue when they hear the word “nuclear.”
And the coal miners keep dying.
~~~~~~
Isn’t it just amazing how much the Atlanta Urinal Constitution hates the most successful black woman in history?:
{{{{Rice to scold rebellious diplomats- Washington —- Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is trying to quell a revolt among U.S. diplomats angry over attempts to force foreign service officers to work in Iraq or face dismissal.-Urinal}}}}
Of course the libs put the ugliest picture of Ms. Rice they could find next to the article.

On Torture and American Values……………….Once upon a time, it was the United States that urged all nations to obey the letter and the spirit of international treaties and protect human rights and liberties. American leaders denounced secret prisons where people were held without charges, tortured and killed. And the people in much of the world, if not their governments, respected the United States for its values………………………………………………………..The Bush administration has dishonored that history and squandered that respect. As an article on this newspaper’s front page last week laid out in disturbing detail, President Bush and his aides have not only condoned torture and abuse at secret prisons, but they have conducted a systematic campaign to mislead Congress, the American people and the world about those policies.

So, we liberals have decided that we should order our Sec. of Defense to attack Alkaka and destroy them in Afghanistan. What? The Sec. of Defense refused to attack? Why? What? jimmy carter thinks the US tortures routinely?
“I don’t think it. I know it,” Carter told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer.
“Our country for the first time in my life time has abandoned the basic principle of human rights,” Carter said. “We’ve said that the Geneva Conventions do not apply to those people in Abu Ghraib prison and Guantanamo, and we’ve said we can torture prisoners and deprive them of an accusation of a crime to which they are accused.”
Carter also said President Bush creates his own definition of human rights.we should just offically withdraw from the geneva convention! we torture in direct violation of it. the world KNOWS that we torture and are proud of it. In that same situation any one of our troops would without hesitation be tortured because any enemy would expect the same!
sure our troops are officially less safe because of the republicans decision to abandon basic elementary human rights… but BUSH is so smart that he’s got to know what he’s doing, right?

[BUY DANISH……….During the latter days of the Cold War and the quite warm days of the first Gulf War, I served in the United States Army as an Interrogator (MOS 97E). As a graduate of the Interrogation program at the U.S. Army Intelligence Center and School, Ft. Huachuca, Arizona, I received comprehensive training on acceptable interrogation techniques, as well as training in adherence to the Geneva Conventions. But it’s not that training that produced my firm conviction that torture and “coercive interrogation techniques” are ineffective intelligence gathering techniques. It is my experience using such techniques myself, as an instructor in resistance to interrogation. Working with US and NATO troops as part of a program called “Survival Evasion Resistance Escape” (SERE), I used these techniques on our own and allied troops. SERE training prepares soldiers, airmen, and commandos most likely to be captured for a worst-case scenario. It helps them learn how to avoid jeopardizing missions (and the lives of their brothers in arms) by resisting abusive treatment and harsh interrogations. As a quid pro quo for providing this training, the interrogators involved were also allowed to hone their own skills, using doctrinally-approved interrogation techniques as well. Even when working with such elite troops as the US Special Forces and the British SAS, we found that the standard interrogation techniques found in the US Army Field Manual 34-52 were far more effective than such abusive behavior as stress positions, sensory deprivation, and humiliation. We obtained more information – and more reliable information – with our basic skills than we did with even days of harsh treatment. As an interrogator, it was also critical to keep in mind the reliability of the information being obtained from a source. When the subject was convinced (or even tricked) into cooperating, the intelligence gathered proved to be reliable. On the other hand, it quickly became evident, even in my early days of resistance training, that when subjected to harsh treatment, the tendency is indeed to say whatever the subject believes will make the abuse stop. And that, I learned, is generally not the truth. – Peter Bauer](http://www.globalsecurity.org/intell/library/policy/army/fm/fm34-52/toc.htm]

Not knowing of course, his abominable track record in the Oval Office over the past seven years.
And IMHO for him to lament and blame the US Senate for endangering our national security by holding up the decision on the new AG was just shameful.

Here’s my terrible CHRISTMAS story…

Anyway, next to me as I was walking in was an 18 year old illegal alien and her 4 kids, ages 3 month, 1 year, two years, and 3 years old. She looked pregnant. This lady a walking food stamp machine
As this lady and her Grady kids were walking in the Illegal Alien Greeter said to her in this girlie sounding voice “Felix Na david.”
I admit I got all hostel and in his/her face. “This is AMERICA” I shouted. “Its Merry frigen CHRISTMAS, Comprando?”
He then put his hands on his hips and said “I am verrrry sorrrrrry sirrrrr” His r’s were all drawn out and everything.
I’m not doing any CHRISTMAS shopping there this year, but will still buy my guns there.

Too many generalities and “single train of thought applied across the board, here.”
Much said “torture doesn’t work” then experts cited. In general sense, generally true. In certain specifics, generally not true.
Doesn’t generally work: taking people with no knowledge of background, apply torture to see what you’ll get.
Doesn’t generally work: applying torture because the society doing so enjoys it.
The two above are what generally happens, what Sen McCain and other Americans were subjected to. The North Vietnamese were fishing. And as a society, they approved.
Generally works: very restricted circumstances, are absolutely positive individual has information desired. NPR discussion yesterday: number of enemy combatants subjected to waterboarding: approx 30. According to ex CIA Chief Tenet and the head of the CIA bin Laden team: absolutely worked. Information gained from sheik Mohammed - more than gained from all other interrogations. The specific method was waterboarding.
Is waterboarding torture? That’s opinion. If so, those opposed should be petitioning DoD and Congress to absolutely bar the practice from certain military training programs. Because we do it to certain of our own military.
Will use of such techniques cause Americans to be tortured? Irrelevant. Since signing the fourth Geneva protocal - 1949 - Americans have never been afforded Geneva Convention protections by those with whom we are at war. Even in most nonwar actions.
Should discussion be on, not the method, but the specifics circumstances? Even Sen Schumer recognizes it’s sometimes necessary. First, if. If so, when? If when, how?
And there is a big, realistic difference between public acknowledgement and private practice.

“Before Dubya became America’s banana republic dictator, we never condoned torture and we never tried to change the rules about what constitutes torture — it’s un-friggin’ believable that Americans are even having to debate this issue!”
Care to explain how the most effective technique used in Nam was not torture? You know, the one where we loaded 4 or 5 gooks into a helicopter, went up about 2000 feet and asked the first one a question. When he spit in the interrogators face, he was promptly tossed out. By the time the second gook went airborne, you could not shut up the rest of them.
Effective? You bet! Accurate information? Always! Or they went ‘flying’ a day or two later.
How do I know of this technique you ask? I worked the flight line where the CH47 Interrogator, as it was referred to, departed from. 5 gooks get on with 6-8 officers and 3 gooks get off when they landed. It seldom took more than two airborne gooks to get results.

Hillary Clinton and it’s taken out of context. She was not addressing the general public, but a group of well-to-do Democrats attending a June 2004 fundraiser for Barbara Boxer. It was a pieced together from a May 29, 2007 economic policy speech. Here’s the full quote:
“It’s time for a new beginning, for an end to government of the few, by the few and for the few, time to reject the idea of an on-you-own society and to replace it with shared responsibility for shared prosperity. I prefer a “we’re all in it together” society.
Now, there is no greater force for economic growth than free markets, but markets work best with rules that promote our values, protect our workers and give all people a chance to succeed. When we get our priorities in order and make the smart investments we need, the markets work well.”

Well, the subject de jour is “torture” or how to get rid of Judge Mukasey.
The magic word, of course, is “torture”. Twist it all around. Bright lights=torture. Dripping water on face=torture. Lack of sleep=torture. Lack of chocolates by Jenny Craig=torture. Stretch racks=torture. Bobbing for apples=torture. Bamboo under nails=torture. Paying taxes=torture.
Now, take Macasy and quiz him on every one of these “tortures”. Don’t give specifics, just generalizations. If he does not answer correctly (in true liberal mode) then he is neither gentleman nor jurist. Off with his head!!!cries Pelosi.

It should be obvious by now that within the legal definition of torture, as used by the administration, waterboarding as a practice is not torture. Reason? probably much like distinguishing between murder, premeditated murder and manslaughter. Equating all killing with murder is inappropriate. There’s a lot of reliance on the “lasting effects” aspect in the definition.
The discussion seems to imply the practice (waterboarding) is endemic. It’s not. It’s not done by the military. It’s done with the oversight of the Agency’s inspector general and legal staff.
So I’ll toss out that while torture is different from harsh interrogation methods (anyone here ever been “interviewed” by small-town cops about 25 or 30 years ago? Some of those practices would be labeled by many here as torture), that torture is morally wrong. But there are limited instances when that which is morally wrong is necessarily right. And instances in which not to employ methods which are morally wrong would be to commit a greater moral wrong.
It’s the old moral development discussion leadoff: Is stealing wrong? If so, does one let one’s child die rather than steal medication to save the child’s life?
Dealing in absolutes poses numerous quandaries.
Diane Rehm show, yesterday, audio clip at the link.

The sources added that each US plane carried one tactical nuclear weapon and that the site was hit by one bomb and was totally destroyed. At the beginning of October, Israel’s military censor began to allow the local media to report on the raid without attributing their report to foreign sources. NSA Sought Data Before 9/11 Beginning in February 2001, almost seven months before the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the government’s top electronic eavesdropping organization, the National Security Agency, asked a major U.S. telecommunications carrier for information about its customers and the flow of electronic traffic across its network, according to sources familiar with the request. The carrier, Qwest Communications, refused, believing that the request was illegal unless accompanied by a court order.

LuckoDuh, says “Isn’t it just amazing how much the Atlanta Urinal Constitution hates the most successful black woman in history?”
You are right, if you are left of center you can’t attack black people because it makes you “seem” racist, while Republicans can attack black people because everyone “knows” they are racist. I mean you’d never hear a liberal saying “isn’t it amazing how Sean Hannity attacks Obama, the most competitive black candidate for President ever?”
Of course not. It wouldn’t make any sense at all as racism from the right is expected. Its just like libs railing against anti-Gay Repubs getting caught giving sexual favors in public bathrooms. Its the hypocrisy that makes it a story. If a conservative makes racist attacks, where’s the hypocrisy? There isn’t any. That’s just consistency.

Unfortunately, we are fighting to maintain (or create) another nation in the middle east.
There IS a difference.
Please explain why we would have to fight them over here. Are they going to storm our beaches? I don’t think so. Are they going to parachute in? I don’t think so.
9/11, as with all terror attacks, was isolated. Even with us fighting a war for 5 years, we could have another attack tomorrow. They will sneak into this country. We need to be protecting our borders. And we need to eliminate OBL and his sidekick Mutley.

Paul,
How old are you? Could you possibly be my Philosophy professor from college? I loved that class.
“Dealing in absolutes poses numerous quandaries.”
Nice Paulism there. I couldn’t agree more. That’s been a Boschism as well for a long time.
Or as Obi Wan said in the last Star Wars movie:
“Only a Sith speaks in absolutes.” (You know, Obi Wan said that right before Anakin proclaimed he was the new king of the universe and was going to take over the world - and then Obi Wan kicked his a$$ and he got all his flesh burned off and lost all his limbs and was left as a deformed, deranged torso).
Let’s just say, for me anyway, there are plenty of things that go on behind the scenes that we don’t know about, and to be honest, I don’t want to know about them.
Off the record, I think many of us wouldn’t mind torture so much if, and I’ll give the example RW gave last week, it meant that we were able to find a bomb hidden within a city and millions were saved.
Well, that’s a no brainer there for me.
But, on the record, it is illegal and therefore as a civilized society, we have to uphold it.
Sometimes I think the old saying, “just don’t get caught” is applicable in alot of things. Unfortunately, Bush has taken that philosophy to a whole other, inexcusable level.

Goldie, just because you do not understand or do not agree, is no reason for name calling.
Nowhere did I claim to agree with the methods used or condone their use. I simply related what I witnessed while on active duty in my younger days. I was simply pointing out that Bush is not the first administration to use or be linked to improper interrogation procedures. Your holier-than-thou attitude speaks volumes about your character.
As to how many lives did it save? If you’re looking for a firm number, I cannot provide that. I can tell you that it altered many patrols that were sent out. I know that on a few occasions that the ambush that was set against the US was turned into a rout for our side. Did that save the 15 men on that particular patrol? I would think yes. Does that quantify ‘how many lives did it save’?
Whether you agree or disagree with the techniques used today does not matter. Ones mans torture is another man’s interrogation.
You nor I, or for that matter, President Bush can control what method is used unless we are present when it is happening. We can only address the method used once we have solid proof that inappropriate methods have been used. It is the congress’s responsibility to provide strict guidelines as to what constitutes torture and what is allowed. Do different situation change what is defined as torture?
Is making someone walk around in their underwear in front of the opposite sex torture? If so, then my drill sergeant was guilty of torture. He made our platoon do exercise in the rain in nothing but our boxers while there were many females walking by.

I haven’t listened to Rush in at least 5 years, mm. I know you think we all get our talking points from him, but the fact is we just “think”.
I think the difference in what you presented and my opinion of what is going on here is the nature of the threat. Our enemy is using our society against us. Storming the beaches won’t work against us, so what will? Exactly what we’re doing. Radical Islam has a goal of taking over the world. While the left has no problem electing muslims to political office, I do. What happens when 51% of our offices are held by muslims? Will we still have the freedoms we have today, or will we have the freedoms “enjoyed” in Iran today. I have no intention of ever “enjoying” those freedoms and am more than willing to eliminate that threat today even if it means taking on Iran and the rest of the middle east. I don’t get the impression you believe that threat is real.

WASHINGTON - An increasingly confrontational President Bush on Friday vetoed a bill authorizing hundreds of popular water projects even though lawmakers can count enough votes to override him. “When we override this irresponsible veto, perhaps the president will finally recognize that Congress is an equal branch of government and reconsider his many other reckless veto threats,” said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev
But Bush never vetoed spending bills under the Republican Congress, despite budgetary increases then, too. Attempting to demonstrate fiscal toughness in the seventh year of his presidency, Bush risks being criticized for doing too little, too late and of waging a transparently partisan attack against the Democrats who now run Capitol Hill.

Article 3: Contempt of Congress.
In his conduct of the office of President of the United States, Richard M. Nixon, contrary to his oath faithfully to execute the office of the President of the United States, and to the best of his ability preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States, and in violation of his constitutional duty to take care that the laws be faithfully executed, had failed without lawful cause or excuse, to produce papers and things as directed by duly authorized subpoenas issued by the Committee on the Judiciary of the House of Representatives, on April 11, 1974, May 15, 1974, May 30, 1974, and June 24, 1974, and willfully disobeyed such subpoenas. The subpoenaed papers and things were deemed necessary by the Committee in order to resolve by direct evidence fundamental, factual questions relating to Presidential direction, knowledge or approval of actions demonstrated by other evidence to be substantial grounds for impeachment of the President. In refusing to produce these papers and things, Richard M. Nixon, substituting his judgement as to what materials were necessary for the inquiry, interposed the powers of the Presidency against the lawful subpoenas of the House of Representatives, thereby assuming to himself functions and judgments necessary to the exercise of the sole power of impeachment vested by Constitution in the House of Representatives.
In all this, Richard M. Nixon has acted in a manner contrary to his trust as President and subversive of constitutional government, to the great prejudice of the cause of law and justice, and to the manifest injury of the people of the United States.
Wherefore, Richard M. Nixon, by such conduct, warrants impeachment and trial and removal from office.
(Approved 21-17 by the House Judiciary Committee on Tuesday, July 30, 1974.)

Paul,
I am not very concerned with waterboarding. I am more concerned with those who practice it. We invariably find that when extraordinary measures are authorized, there will be those who abuse the authorization.
The most recent example was the FBI’s admission that they routinely violated the rights of many individuals by abusing the Patriot Act. The U.S. Government has a long history of invading people’s privacy, etc.
Not a simple matter to discuss, especially when there are clear violations of the law. And that is excluding “renditions”. Interesting how our government (acting on information from the Canadian Government) took a Canadian into custody then sent him abroad to be tortured only to find out that he was innocent. Do we (the USA) bear any guilt in this? I think we do!

Sales of all US automakers have dropped and layoffs are planned. Consumer confidence is down. Retail holiday sales are expected to be below expectations. You summed it up nicely.
Science fiction/science fantasy is quite adept at dealing with moral issues. One reason I like it so much. I just finished rereading Orson Scott Card’s “Pastwatch: The Redemption of Christopher Columbus.” Deals with the question: what if you could go back in history and change events to prevent one of the greatest (perceived) tragedies - in this case, slavery. But what’s the moral right to do so if, by going back, you would cause all the people who already lived, from that time forward, to have o existence. Then the kicker of the novel: what if, in the course of preparing to change history, you found that another future group had gone back in history and made sure slavery in the Americas took hold to prevent a far more horrible future?
You might enjoy it. It also dealt with the ecological disaster awaiting future generations, before it was fashionable to write about such things in such a manner.
I’ll guess the only reason the nuclear question re. torture is raised is… because that’s about the only “justifiable” option one can put forth. Unless one is in the habit of personalizing issues, in which case the “protect your kids” argument is made.
Really doesn’t leave a lot of exceptions to the general principle (torture is morally wrong), does it?

Well, hello, stranger! Nice to hear from you again. I’ve been going through a few Rose’s (need another punctuation key, here) - but your recommendations are sterling.
Lots of issues with those who employ violence. It can’t help but have a dehumanizing effect. It is still vivid in my mind - after the fall of the last Peacock Throne - news crews did a story on a government torturer. They showed a metal box - an oven - he would put people in, then turn up the heat and killed them. Then he would go home to dinner with his family. Sickening. But some societies (even here in North America) did such things for entertainment. That’s what happens when the concept of “common humanity” is not developed and people see those outside their tribe as not human. Unfortunately, such attitudes exist in many parts of the world. That’s a key element I think of when I point out everyone is not “just like” us.
Remember the social science experiments from - what - over 40 years ago (remember thru textbooks!) where people would “shock” another person if an authority figure told them it was okay. Sheer abdication of moral responsibility. Same with those who clearly violate the trust of their government positions.
Renditions - what I find troublesome is this was not an invention from the current administration, by a carryover by the bureaucracy of the previous administration. Some seem to take the view of “well, it’s been ongoing, so it must be okay.” Not enough questioning by those incoming along the lines of “you are suggesting we do what?” Equally troubling: the story was there. I suppose the mainline media would say they just didn’t know.

The war on Christmas. Battleground Colorado.
Christmas displays are to be less “Christmas-y,” avoiding “things that scream Christmas at folks.” For example, lights will be blue and white, because red and green lights might remind someone of Christmas, which must never be done at Christmastime, since that might offend those who hate Christmas./What kind of fiend hates Christmas? Why do the Grinch and Ebenezer Scrooge take precedence over the vast majority of Americans who are decent, normal people? The answer: because moonbats are in charge, and they are anything but decent or normal.

OK, some simple oil economics and math: The best refinery technology in the world can only get about 20 gallons of gasoline out of a 42 gallon barrel of oil. The rest is other stuff, like diesel, home heating oil, kerosene, and chemicals, all of which have value. So when oil was say 60 dollars per barrel, a gallon of gasoline should have cost 3 dollars, but was less because the other stuff could be sold. Let us say other stuff sold for 20 dollars per barrel. With oil at 100 dollars per barrel, we can still sell the other stuff of 20 bucks, so that means gasoline should cost four dollars per gallon, plus the crack premium and distribution costs. Get ready for gasoline to jump to four plus bucks per gallon, thanks mostly to the Neocons, with their war talk against Iran, and their occupation of Iraq. Way to go WingNuts.

You gotta love the Rocky Mountain state! Lots of tree huggers and not so many neo-cons.
But it turns out the “WAR on Christmas” in Colorado was really a WAR against the JEWS!!! Who woulda thunk it?
{The 17 members of Fort Collins’ Holiday Display Task Force have spent the past few months hammering out exactly how city government should commemorate Christmas, Hanukkah, Ramadan and Kwanzaa, and the solstice, and any other religious or secular celebration that happens to take place near the end of the year. Their recommendations would take effect next year, but task force members tentatively said Wednesday they hope the city starts moving toward a more secular set of winter displays this year.
The task force was created this summer after a heated controversy during the past two years involving a request to place a menorah in Old Town Square. Representatives from the Chabad Jewish Center requested a menorah be allowed on city property just like a Christmas tree was. But City Council decided to prohibit the menorah, fearing that allowing it would open the floodgates to requests for everything from Wiccan symbols to reindeer to Nativity scenes.
CooperSmith’s Pub & Brewing decided to host the menorah last year, but the controversy didn’t rest, so the task force was created.
Its draft recommendations are still being finalized and are not yet available to the public, but at a meeting Wednesday, several task force members discussed what the holidays in Fort Collins will look like.
For one, there will be no city-sponsored Christmas tree nor a city sponsored Hanukkah menorah.}

Every imagined problem for the Neo-cons involves “terrrrrists” and “war”. Why stop with a “War On Christmas”, which started as a pagan holiday to begin with? Why not also have a “War On The Easter Bunny” too? We can never do enough to stop those darned paganists and their brainwashing tactics, after all. They’re all a bunch o’ terrrrists, correct?

I was in the Rocky Mountain state years ago on business - near Golden, home of Coors (remember all those college kids who would ice down a truckload of Coors (before it was distributed nationwide), take it back east and make their tuition for the year)?
Anyway, I remember that trip ‘cause I was watching the news in my hotel room and they cut to the Coors brewery - a guy died there on one of those public relations tours. The people had access to places we wouldn’t dream of nowadays. They had the police and ambulances there, along with they guy’s wife, who had gone to pieces. The Coors spokesman was being interviewed and said the tour was going along a catwalk near the huge vats, a couple guys started horsing around and one of them went over the railing, bounced off some pipes and fell in a vat and drowned. The guy’s wife looked at him, crying her eyes out, and asked if he suffered before he died. The Coors guy said “we don’t think so. He got out three times to go to the bathroom.”

Oprah is in the news. She sponsored an African School for Girls in Africa. One of the staff at that school in Africa abused seven children attending Oprah’s school. Oprah gave cell phones to the students as a remedy. They can call her, she says, anytime if anyone tries anything ever again. Oprah herself is a victim of abuse, you know. So she knew the risks when she sponsored that school for innocent african girls.
Oprah, why didn’t you scrutinize the staff at that school? You are being led by incompetents. I wouldn’t left you so wide open, Oprah. You need me, girl. Go ‘head. Call me.
Here’s your problem, Oprah: if there is anything that a diligent person, making a routine background check, should have discovered in that abusive-staff-person’s past, then you are in for it, girlfriend.
Go ‘head.

Jim Wooten took the moral high ground in his blog today about contraceptives in the schools. Africa has millions of children dying of AIDS. Africans aren’t doing anything any different that Americans are doing, when it comes to their sex life. We fook! We all just fook. Africans die because propriety constrains precaution.
Americans need to teach sex-ed in middle school.
If not, we’re finished.
