Look at Jay Kookman having to qualify his own column:
{{{{Let’s be honest: It’s not about the mussels.-Urinal}}}}
I thought you were going to be honest?
~~~~~~
{{{{Mr. Thompson, in turn, took a swing at Mr. Romney after one of the debate moderators said the former governor had run “to the left” of Sen. Edward (Swimmer) M. Kennedy in his failed 1994 Senate bid. “Actually, Mitt, I didn”t know there was any room to the left of Ted Kennedy. In fact, I didn”t know there was any room to the right of him, either.”}}}} ~~~~~~
{{{{“It’s rather unbelievable that [Hillary] Clinton would listen to a conversation being conducted by political opponents,” says one Republican campaign consultant, “but refuse to allow our intelligence agencies to listen to conversations conducted by terrorists as they plot and plan to kill us.”}}}}
~~~~~~
The terrorists in Iraq know full well that they can hide behind innocent civilians and get them killed or even kill them themselves, and the pinko media will be there to blame it on America:
{{{{The U.S. military said Sunday its forces killed an estimated 49 militants during a dawn raid to capture an Iranian-linked militia chief in Baghdad’s Sadr City enclave, but Iraqi police and hospital officials reported only 15 deaths, including three children killed when helicopter gunfire hit a house as they slept. Iraqi government spokesman Ali al-Dabbagh said all the dead were civilians, and he told CNN that Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki had met with the U.S. commander in Iraq, Gen. David Petraeus, to protest the action.-Urinal POS}}}}
The mainstream drive by media is fully responsible for each and every civilian death that occurs in combat with the terrorists.
Every one.
Instead of exposing the actions of the terrorists as despicable, these scumbag media people just do what comes normal to their sick, depraved minds and blames our troops for the actions of the terrorists.
The terrorists aren’t stupid, this is great, they kill civilians and display their bodies as propaganda against America, here comes the lib media to megaphone for them, with much joy and glee.
FY, POS AJC, MF.

I knew a freshwater mussel once. No kidding.
In the old days, when the ‘Zillettes thought boys were icky and slimy, they also thought all stuff that really was icky and slimy was cool.
After an expedition to the Pearl River they brought home a shell, which contained our newest pet. Happy the Clam.
Thanks to the folks at the Ole’ Miss extension center we learned Happy the Clam was actually Happy the Freshwater Mussel. But the original name always stuck.
He lived at the bottom of a Tupperware bowl on the patio for nearly a year. The girlies had to go back to the river regularly for new “dirty” water. We learned about osmosis that summer.
One day the youngest ran in crying that there was some “white pudding” stuff in Happy’s bowl. We explained, holding back hysterical laughter, that the “white pudding” stuff WAS Happy.
I guess I have a soft spot for that particular species of mollusk.
Faced with our current (and probable future) water crisis, I believe the need of the humans outweigh the needs of my shelled friends. No doubt about it.
Is it not possible to satisfy our requirements and maybe also help out the little mussels?
Heck, aren’t we the home of one of the greatest Aquariums in the world?
Wouldn’t it be nice if Mr. Marcus and the aquarium staff took an interest in the plight of Happy’s relatives?
I’d volunteer to help. And if Mr. Marcus and the Georgia Aquarium needed some cash, I have a little put aside.
I’m praying for rain, cutting back wherever possible, given up ninja watering of my precious calicarpa and am watching the water evaporate from our old hot tub.
I have heard that other states that share our water do not have the same restrictions we do. If that is true, it’s just plain wrong.
I don’t care if the bank’s pansies whither or my car is dusty. Commercial watering must cease.
We should not be bottling tap water. Too much is wasted.
It is not going to get any better, so we will have to learn to live a little differently.
I also hope, we can leave some freshwater mussels for the next generation of kidlets who love the icky and the slimy.

Well Ga., at least you are not on fire like in SoCal.
Saw treason last night on 60 minutes
Couric: “Do you think President Bush was in on this?”
Plame: “I don’t know about that, but I, like most other Americans saw President Bush say on TV that he would fire anyone from his administration found to be involved in the leak of my name. It turns out, the president is not a man of his word.”
But it gets worse:
So if you have wondered why Joe and Val are a little p** off, this might help shed some additional light on the matter. Not only did the Bush Administration out a covert intelligence officer working on the most sensitive national security issues in a time of war, but when that officer faced a direct threat to her life and her family’s safety because of that public exposure, they did not do a g******* thing to help.
Disgusting.

Plame was undercover trying to trick the Iranians into buying poison-pill blueprints for a phony nuke. Cheney outed her at a critical moment. Iran’s nukes were saved. Everyone in Iran who dealt with Plame were hanged. It’s part of the reason that amnehnijihad rose to power. Bush all but hoisted him up there. The truth is probably classified by Cheney, but in future generations, when the truth becomes unclassified, and Cheney/Bush are revealed to be the traitors they are, history wont be kind. (Of course, That future may be nuked by Iran, thanx to Cheney.)
Anyone else get the feeling that the man sized safe in Cheney’s office is radiation proof? What a coward.
I demand the resignation of George W Bush effective noon tomorrow. Ditto Cheney. Let the Speaker run things till Hillary takes the oath in ‘09.

Water, water, water. My gosh do we need water. It’s time we realized that as a species, we are caretakers of the environment. It’s essential that we take a look at the past and recognize the mistakes of the past. In the mid eighties during the last big drought, plans were drawn up to create more water reservoirs downstream of Lanier. This would have alleviated some of the pressure on Northern Ga, and still able to provide more of a precious natural resource downstream.
What happened? Take a guess.

ML’s toon about what are W and Cheney going to be for Halloween was published in the Sunday St. Petersburg Times.
Lake Lanier’s plight was also done in a big story in the local papers. Gov Perdue even came accross as looking good.
As the great philosopher Mr. Spock once said, “the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few”.
SAVE YOUR WATER, a billion gallons of water a day released downstream sounds irresponsible.
Perhaps we need to consider pipelines to carry springtime floodwaters from the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers and pipe it into the Southeast to store in our reservoirs. We can move oil thousands of miles in pipelines, why not water? California can tell us how to do it.

You can’t guess?
Red tape my man, red tape. NIMBYS, enviormentalists and capitalistic ventures thwarting the attempts at creating these reserviors. Not only could they have gained more water resources, the commercial impact of another lake would have benefited the region with increased habitat for fishing, economic oppourtunities for leisure and lessen the impact of water shortages in the future.
Instead, we got a bunch of infighting by individuals and organizations not looking at long term solutions.
A lot of states along the east coast are revisiting water resources and taking a hard look at future needs and pressures on current sources. With increasing populations, it only makes sense to investigate these issues.
I was doing some reading on desalinization technology and came away quite impressed. It’s something that should be looked into, in particular our neighbors to the south along the Gulf and the East along the Atlantic.
With populations expected to continue to rise, it’s important for us to examine our future water needs and sources now. It’s important to develop a plan of action and implement it now.

In fact, Novak told the Society of Professional Journalists that Wilson was more interested in not being portrayed as simply an opponent of the Iraq war. He also said that Wilson told him his wife goes by her married name.
Novak said he didn’t expect his report to lead to an investigation by special prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald, who Novak claims knew all along that the source of Plame’s identity original came from then-Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage.
“It was an off-hand remark to a question I asked in an interview I requested,” Novak said. “This was not a conspiracy in the federal government to go after Valerie Plame Wilson.”
Novak also said he was forced to pay his legal fees, which totaled $160,000. His home newspaper, the Chicago Sun-Times, contributed $30,000. But most of all, Novak said he was shocked by the attacks against him for reporting a perfectly legitimate story.
“I was stunned by how little editorial support I received. I was under assault from editorial writers from across the country,” Novak said. “It is startling how little is known about this case by the people who are commenting on it.”

Now remember, as a US citizen this is completely illegal and not allowed though for businesses, it’s perfectly OK to pack your bags and stop paying US taxes. US citizens are required to file US taxes regardless of where they reside and even if you rescind your US citizenship, you are required by law to continue filing (and possibly paying) for 10 years. Why corporate America is allowed to operate with such different terms speaks volumes. Halliburton must be so happy to have saved $133 million in taxes. Why does Halliburton, who has profited so handsomely courtesy of the US government, hate America?

I read a fine article in the NY Times this weekend on the water situation out west. Very interesting. It seems that they are having to come up with a system that will bring them water in the event that the Colorado River flow reaches a certain low level. There is an agreement in place where “the river’s lower-basin states (Nevada, Arizona and California) can legally force the upper-basin states (Colorado, Wyoming, New Mexico and Utah) to reduce or stop their water withdrawals.” Sounds like the Western U. S. is a few years ahead of the Eastern U. S., as usual.

I guess we’ll have to rehash everything - not - but as far as firing a “leaker” - Richard Armitage left public service in 2005. And Pres Bush couldn’t fire her husband for using the phrase “covert agent” (which neither Armitage nor Novak did, but Wilson did in his interview that introduced that phrase to the public) because he wasn’t part of the administration.

You’ve GOT to be kidding. You’re not actually confusing the fact Hillary can qualify (over 35, citizen, etc.) with her being “qualified” to be president, are you? Surely you’re smarter than that. And don’t give me voting records you moron. If showing up to vote qualifies her, then Larry Craig is as qualified as she is. I want to know what bills she’s written, what meaningful plans she’s developed, anything that qualifies her to run this country. The fact is she hasn’t done a d_ thing since she’s been in office and didn’t do anything prior to that either that qualifies her to run this nation.
And don’t give me “look up the Clinton Presidency” either. We’re not voting for Bill are we? And if we are, I don’t need to look it up, I lived through it and don’t really care to again. There’s a blight on our history….

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Doughnut eateries, stationery chains and purveyors of private jets are cashing in as White House campaigns open their warchests leading into the make-or-break weeks of primary voting. Financial data released by the candidates shows they have raised collectively a staggering 420 million dollars this year, led by Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton, who has taken in just under 91 million.
Clinton and her chief Republican rival Rudolph Guiliani spent a fortune on five-star hotels, spa retreats and chartered jets as they pursued their presidential quests in style. But Texas Representative Ron Paul from the libertarian wing of the Republican Party (campaign issues: scrap income tax, the Federal Reserve and gun control) saves his pennies at motel chains.

RB from Gwinnett- None of the candidates from either party has been President, a unique set of job skills in and of itself.
None of the candidates thereby have accomplishments that are relevant to the job, because none of them has ever done the job. Every single one brings to the debate a uniques set of life experinces and values that qualifies them to lead.
No Republican candidate has any presidential experience. Closest thing out there to a candidate having any presidential experience whatsoever is Hillary Clinton who at least resided within the Whitehouse and was activist regarding many issues during her husband’s 8 year tenure.
So your argument that Hillary has no presidential accomplishments is actually counter to the disparagement you wish to make. Nice try at partisan hacking, but no banana for you today, Bush-monkey.

What do you know, another Campaign Finance Scandal, should we start numbering them?:
{{{{“That Hillary Clinton’s campaign is involved with this particular cast of characters should give people pause,” says John Moscow, a former Manhattan prosecutor. In the late 1980s and early ’90s he led the investigation of the corrupt Bank of Credit and Commerce International (BCCI) global financial empire—a bank whose prominent shareholders included members of the Harken board. “Too many of the same names from earlier troubling circumstances suggests a lack of control over who she is dealing with,” says Moscow, “or a policy of dealing with anyone who can pay.”}}}}

BAGHDAD, Iraq — U.S.-led forces reported killing 49 insurgents on Sunday during predawn clashes with renegade Shiite militia members. The fighting was the deadliest in recent months and further stoked furor among Iraqis over the heavy toll the war is taking on civilians.
The U.S. military claimed that no civilians were killed or injured during the raid, while Iraqi police said at least 13 were dead, including three children and a woman. Iraqi authorities said 69 people were injured.
“The best equipped, most highly trained fighting force the world has ever seen”……..still can’t manage to shoot straight. Or are they TRYING to shoot the women and kids? Must be part of that grand Republican scheme to win over the hearts and minds of the Iraqi people by killing off their women and children!

RB,
Give it a rest, you can’t win this argument.
No, you can’t call yourself a doctor if you spend a lot of time in the hospital, that’s illegal. You need a medical license to call yourself a doctor - did you not know that?
Here’s some things she’s done:
She’s a lawyer, she’s a two-term Senator from New York, she has served on five Senate committees with nine subcommittee assignments.
We get it, you don’t like her and don’t find her qualified to be President.
Again, don’t vote for her and move along.
I find it incredible that you are so stubborn on this. Can you tell me what Bush has accomplished in his presidency?
See the thing is, what you consider acomplishments and what I consider accomplishments are not the same. You can ask what qualified Hillary, and I can ask what qualifies Rudy? You can waste your time and make a list of Rudy’s accomplishments, and I can waste my time and list Hillary’s. You’ll come back and say, “Oh those aren’t accomplishements because….” and I can come right back and say the same thing.
It’s a ridiculous exercise.
You do not get to determine who is qualified and who isn’t. You get to vote. That’s it. The Constitution is pretty clear about this.

Scary is what w and gop have done to this country for Ron Paul to have to introduce this bill:
“This legislation seeks to restore the checks and balances enshrined in the Constitution by our Founding Fathers to prevent abuse of Americans by their government. This proposed legislation would repeal the Military Commissions Act of 2006 and re-establish the traditional practice that military commissions may be used to try war crimes in places of active hostility where a rapid trial is necessary to preserve evidence or prevent chaos.
The legislation clarifies that no information shall be admitted as evidence if it is obtained from the defendant through the use of torture or coercion. It codifies the FISA process as the means by which foreign intelligence may be obtained and it gives members of the Senate and the House of Representatives standing in court to challenge presidential signing statements that declares the president’s intent to disregard certain aspects of a law passed in the U.S. Congress. It prohibits kidnapping and extraordinary rendition of prisoners to foreign countries on the president’s unilateral determination that the suspect is an enemy combatant. It defends the first amendment by clarifying that journalists are not to be prevented from publishing information received from the legislative or executive branch unless such publication would cause immediate, direct, and irreparable harm to the United States.
Finally, the legislation would prohibit the use of secret evidence to designate an individual or organization with a United States presence to be a foreign terrorist or foreign terrorist organization”

Uh oh.
Looks as if the hard-core Bible thumpers may have no choice but to try to convince their “faithful” to support a flip flopping, neo-heathen in Mormon clothes rather than the other RINO Giuliani.
And if they detest him so, it makes me want to take a closer look at “America’s mayor”.
{{{Evangelical leaders are urging followers to support Romney’s campaign for president to prevent Giuliani from gaining the Republican nomination.
One evangelical, pro-life activist and attorney James Bopp Jr., last week sent a letter to hundreds of social conservatives warning that they must unite behind Romney or risk a Giuliani victory.
“Other evangelical leaders have weighed in on the acceptability of the leading Republican candidates. [Focus on the Family founder] Dr. James Dobson, America’s most influential evangelical leader, has expressed his opinion that Rudy Giuliani, John McCain, and Fred Thompson are not acceptable, based on their positions on various important conservative issues.”
Bopp points out that Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council and Dr. Richard Land of the Southern Baptist Convention have also declared that Romney is an acceptable presidential choice for social conservatives.
“So it does come down to two things,” Bopp concludes in his letter.
Dr. Bob Jones III, chancellor of Bob Jones University in Greenville, S.C., has also come out in support of Romney.}}}
ANY moderate Republican is going to be distasteful to this impractical and dogmatic crowd due to their intransigent litmus tests on two or three wedge issues. Whether the man they support is a complete screw up regarding everything else is of no matter to them apparently.
It seems that for them, their support for any candidate is always going to be a matter of religious ideology first not basic competence, true leadership or what is best for the United States.
And how awful for the nation is more of what we’ve seen from this crowd for the past seven years?

Actually, RB, first repsonse to Andrew was on GHB’s watch. He did a much better job of it than “junior” did with Katrina and that is a highly documneted historical fact that you seem to be unaware of.
Clinton worked in a bipartisan manner to promulgate the recovery when he had office. Effectively, I might add.
There are many factors at play here and I do admit that we are comparing apples and oranges, but there is simply no comparison between GWB and his father/Clinton in terms of response and result.
I repeat, Katrina was not GWBs finest hour; instead it is perhaps the greatest failure of his presidency as it gave fodder to the notion that he cares more for the welfare of Iraqis than he does americans.

RW-(the original) - October 22, 2007 8:53 AM - Shouldn’t in the news/aka anonymous get his OWN blog, instead of posting repeatedly simpleminded and crude irrelevancies here day after day?
I dunno RW. In between lovingly tending to your newest meth batch, and repititiously defending that barely functioning alcoholic Andy, shouldn’t you be looking in the mirror and seeing what a shallow liar you (and your “Soldiers of War” buddy) are?
Yup, President Bush and a good portion of our Iraq forces (aided by that paragon of fairness, Blackwater) can do no wrong. Every Iraqi man woman and child they kill is a terrorist; a terrorist whose WMDs and IEDs magically disappear during questioning. (Admittedly, it’s hard questioning a corpse). Not to worry. The lucky “terrrorists” have corroded, non functioning AK-47s planted next to them to “prove” they are evil.
And the moon is made of gorgonzola cheese.
Mistakes are made in war. But your (and drunken Andy’s) refusal to admit that not a single one has been made simply shows that the illegal substances you’ve been sampling has fried your neurons.
Now go back and tend to your meth lab. That stuff can be explosive, you know. Then you and Andy can share the ice and ethyl you’ve made and strive for that feeling so close to being normal.
Of course, that means you’ll be repeating the exact same lies about the “perfection” of the Iraq war over and over again, but I’ll have to be a Christian and forgive you. With so few brain cells left, you can’t help yourselves.

“Remember this from last week?
The U.S. military believes it has dealt devastating and perhaps irreversible blows to al-Qaeda in Iraq in recent months, leading some generals to advocate a declaration of victory over the group, which the Bush administration has long described as the most lethal U.S. adversary in Iraq.
But there’s always that big dark cloud around any tiny silver lining in Iraq. WaPo reports that part today:
Gen. David H. Petraeus and Ambassador Ryan C. Crocker have concluded that Shiite extremists pose a rising threat to the U.S. effort in Iraq, as the relative influence of Sunni insurgent groups such as al-Qaeda in Iraq has diminished drastically because of ongoing U.S. operations.
Who could have predicted that? It’s as if the U.S. is bogged down in the middle of a sectarian civil war in Iraq.”

Bosch, I think you know how I feel about the extraordinary, undue and IMHO, unfavorable influence of organized agenda-driven Christianity on many of todays politicians.
With that said, you might be surprised that even though he is a former Baptist preacher and from Hope, Arkansas, which might otherwise be two big strikes against him in my book, I actually think he is fairly worthy of consideration over the other GOP candidates.
At least he seems sincere, reasoned and informed whereas the others seem more along the lines of your garden variety, ultra-polished, say whatever it takes to get elected, professional snake oil salesmen/politicians.
And though he does carry on sometimes about honor, which in todays races, is usually another big red flag, I have a sense that he may be trustworthy.
The others, including the Democratic front runners? I’m not so sure.

We provided the umbrella for Iraqi elections, and they chose the Shia.
The Shia are our natural enemies both ideologically and geo-politically, and socio-theologically, and culturally, and they dont wear suits and ties, and they hate mickey mouse.
We bring our democracy to the middle east, and they elect our enemies.

Am Vet at 11:41 - well said. One of the very few things that oxycontin boy ever said was that in politics, you can generally follow the money.
I recently read something, probably on that awful blog dailykos, about that as it applies to the theocrats. For years they’ve made their money by shrieking about abortion and the dire dangers of ‘mo’s wanting to get married. The poor little old ladies in the church pews had to send them money so they could support good Republicans and defeat evil. Now, all of a sudden, the good Republicans are about to post a guy who - supposedly - is pro choice and pro gay rights.
So now, how will Dobson and crew raise money now?

Let us look and see what parts of the WaPo article that al-Gitmo, terrorist mouth piece, has cherry picked over:
{{{{“As the Sunni insurgents quit fighting us, the problems we have with criminality and other militia, many of them Shia, become relatively more important,” said a U.S. Embassy official, who like others spoke on the condition of anonymity because the plan is not finalized.}}}}
Well, no Shiite.
{{{{The revised plan lays out specifics of the withdrawal of five U.S. combat brigades from Iraq by July 2008 as announced by President Bush last month, but it stresses that any drawdowns hinge on continued security gains — not a timeline.}}}}
In other words, we plan on killing all of the terrorists before we leave. You ain’t gonna wait us out.
{{{{The plan also outlines how U.S. commanders should carry out the transition as Iraqi forces assume greater responsibility for the country’s security while the gradual withdrawal of combat brigades shrinks the U.S. presence.}}}}
Just as planned.

Blackwater accused of tax evasion. In a letter to Blackwater CEO Erik Prince today, Rep. Henry Waxman (D-CA) says he has obtained documents “which suggest that Blackwater may have engaged in significant tax evasion” by labeling their armed guards “independent contractors.” Due to the label, “Blackwater may have avoided paying millions of dollars in Social Security, Medicare, unemployment, and related taxes for which it is legally responsible,” writes Waxman. DynCorp and Triple Canopy, “the two other major private military contractors providing security services to the State Department in Iraq,” classify their guards as “employees.”

One of the more intriguing aspects about these “social conservatives” (NOW there’s a euphemism if ever there was one!) is that they make for such strange bedfellows with the other “conservative” elements of the GOP.
Their extreme aversion for virtually everything liberal, academic, scientific and progressive makes them the perfect ally for the non-religious hodge podge of far right extremists who share that one over-arching philosophy.
And as irrational as the demagoguery is to most reasonable and centrist Americans, it inexplicably sells very well to those uber extremists who probably could give a rats arse about Jesus, the church or their dogma but are willing to pretend to be faux Judeo-Christians themselves in order to be part of the “conservative” machine.
So it strikes me as odd that in some ways the political parties have had a role reversal from their traditional functions.
For decades the GOP acted as a brake, sometimes effective and sometimes not, against the excesses of liberalism.
Now the Dems are acting in a similar fashion against the ill-conceived excesses of the theocrats in the Republican Party.
Ban abortion, bring back prayer in public schools, outlaw homosexuality, deport 20 million people, willy nilly and pollute the US Constitution with inane amendments defining marriage.

Giuliani’s stance on abortion falls right in line with the Republican Platform of 2004. AmVet keeps wanting to ignore this fact:
(((Our goal is to ensure that women with problem pregnancies have the kind of support, material and otherwise, they need for themselves and for their babies, not to be punitive towards those for whose difficult situation we have only compassion. We oppose abortion, but ————>our pro-life agenda does not include punitive action against women who have an abortion. We salute those who provide alternatives to abortion and offer adoption services, and we commend Congressional Republicans for expanding assistance to adopting families and for removing racial barriers to adoption.<————)))
Hell, even Ralph Nader, AmVet’s preferred choice said the Republicans have no intention of overturning Rowe v. Wade.
On same-sex marriage Rudy said that there is no need for an amendment at this time. When the states begin seeking such legislation in increased numbers, then it will be time for the amendment and not before.

Craig, the “faithful” in the GOP are in a very, very difficult spot.
They know they’ve been used by the leaders of that party, in that even the most rabid Republicans know they are looking at political suicide by too strongly advocating these extreme measures.
So they bide their time and try to back door their agenda with executive signing orders, and other quasi-legal aberrations and to stack the Supreme Court with “strict constructionist” judges who just happen to have pictures of Roy Moore on their walls!
So, in a semi-transparent and desperate move to appear more rational and centrist, these neo-con politicians dance on the line and give lip service to these repulsive ideas, cloaked in terms like “family values” and “compassionate conservatism”.
And it is these failed notions straight from the “base” that the nation will no longer tolerate nor quietly accept though a huge part of their dogma driven lunacy.
But based on the path they’ve followed religiously (get it!) since Reagan, the GOP is going to be hard pressed to win without them or their dollars.

This month’s National Geographic has a wonderfully informative article (do they ever have any that aren’t?) regarding Meeting the Climate Challenge.
Though the debate rages on, one thing is absolutely and incontrovertibly certain - the increasingly accurate information available to everybody, regarding this situation is growing every day.
One cannot turn anywhere these days, it seems, without the topic being discussed, analyzed and referenced by innumerable publications, news outlets and legitimate, respected, credible scientific sources.
And this is great news for mankind.
This is the very scientific model at work on a grand scale.
The more accurate information people, including scientists and experts, have from a wide variety of sources, the better they are able to make informed choices and decisions.
And, of course, this knowledge and information is extremely bad news for the dwindling nay-sayers who, like it or not, are every single day being more marginalized, discredited and repudiated by an ever growing number of relevant people and respected, experienced organizations.
This fact is irrefutable.

Global warming? Study planet formation. We have nine planets to look at. We can see what went wrong with eight of them. We can deduce what’s happening with ours, the right planet, the good planet, the planet with all the water, and mean temperatures that stay within reasonable limits for hundreds of thousands of years, certainly longer than modern man who’s only been here for 75000 years give or take.
So did we mix our DNA with the Neanderthal or did we simply kill them off, so that they wouldn’t impurify our precious bodily fluids? I dont know, every time I read something from the anthropologists, the contradict what I read before.

Wasn’t Blowhard AmVet bloviating about how nice liberals are compared to conservatives earlier? What are the odds that this was done by a conservative?
An all-American kid from a little all-American town, the 22-year-old Marine lance corporal died heroically in Iraq. More than a thousand people turned out Wednesday as a white hearse carried his body to burial in the historic 1800s Cooke Memorial Cemetery./Within hours, the grave was desecrated. About 30 sprays of flowers were ripped apart, petals strewn over the loose earth. Flags decorating the gravesite were also torn down and sentimental notes and posters shredded./”It looked like a big debris field about 40 feet square,” said Liberty Police Chief Mike Cummings. “This wasn’t done by the wind or animals. It was obviously intentional. We don’t know if someone did this for a stupid prank or they were anti-war or what.”
One of the comments is from someone who thinks it was probably done by a feral hog. Guaranteed that person is a Moonbat and would be a good candidate for “No warming, No War!” marches. Just send him a polar bear suit and he’ll be ready to go.

RE, it seems to me this unusual collection of nay-sayers fall into two main categories.
First, is the crowd who denies there is even a global warming issue as evidenced by strange attempts for example, to “show” that the NW Passage was as “ice-free” centuries ago as it is today.
These are almost always just dismissed by knowledgeable scientists and experts as laughable.
Then there is the crowd who begrudgingly agrees that the earth is indeed warming, but that volcanoes, changes in the Sun’s orbit around the Earth (screw Galileo and Copernicus!) or cow farts are the main reasons.
These are even more laughable.
Throw in the evangelists who literally believe all the animals were loaded onto the ark two by two and you have one helluva incompetent voice to argue the credibility of their position!
And I would venture to say that like myself, most rational people around the world see their “anti everything liberal” bent as their true, perhaps only motivation.
Certainly, not scientific accuracy or the welfare of this planet’s occupants.
But it does not matter. These ostriches will have no lasting influence on the scientific conclusions and therefore the answers to addressing these enormous problems.

{{{First, is the crowd who denies there is even a global warming issue as evidenced by strange attempts for example, to “show” that the NW Passage was as “ice-free” centuries ago as it is today.}}}
Who has done that pray tell? NO ONE?
{{{Then there is the crowd who begrudgingly agrees that the earth is indeed warming, but that volcanoes, changes in the Sun’s orbit around the Earth (screw Galileo and Copernicus!) or cow farts are the main reasons.}}}
Uh, it was a U.N. report that blamed it on farting livestock and it was people like me who ridiculed that report.
What Galileo and Copernicus have to do with any of this reach depths of stupidity I won’t even try to fathom.

Read the bald faced lie being pushed at the National Geographic:
{{{{According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, eleven of the twelve hottest years since thermometer readings became available occurred between 1995 and 2006.}}}}
Uh, wrong:
{{{{According to H. Sterling Burnett, a senior fellow at the National Center for Policy Analysis (NCPA), NASA scientist and famous man-made global warming proponent James Hansen’s well-known claims that 1998 was measured as the warmest year on record in the U.S. were the result of a serious mathematical error. NASA has now corrected that error, and 1934 is now known as the warmest year on record, with 1921 the third warmest year instead of 2006 as was also previously claimed.}}}}
If you have a brain and know how to use it, this should be obvious:
{{{{Unlike mid-latitude glaciers, which are warmed and melted by surrounding air in the summer, ice loss on Kilimanjaro is driven strictly by solar radiation. Since air near the mountain’s ice is almost always well below freezing, there is typically no true melting. Instead, ice loss is mainly through sublimation – the same irritating process (whereby ice goes directly to vapour, without going through a liquid phase) that causes the ice-cubes in your freezer to shrink, so that when you finally need them for that must-have gin and tonic, there’s almost nothing left. Sublimation requires more than eight times as much energy as melting.}}}}
Gosh, does this mean solar radiation is increasing and that’s why the climate on Mars is also warming?

“Dodd screws up:
Senator Chris Dodd on Thursday single-handedly blocked a bill to legalize unconstitutional spying and immunize criminals who have engaged in it. But by doing so, Dodd may have made the biggest blunder Washington has seen in many months. He advertised the fact that a single senator with nerve has the power to block a bill, including – of course – every bill to further fund the occupation of Iraq. Now, how will Dodd explain his past and future failure to use the same power to end the war that he has used to end warrantless spying? How will other senators, including Harry Reid, explain their own failure? How will Nancy Pelosi manage to keep asserting in every conversation that only 67 senators can end a war?”

Yep, single cell orginisms begot multi cell orginisms which begot multi cell orginisms with funtional groups (tissues) and on and on getting more complicated in order to propogate.
So far as the DNA thing goes, I would take a look at Mitochondrial DNA. Amazing thing, the mitochondria inside everyone of your cells actually has it’s own seperate and distinct genetic code. The theory goes that the mitochondria was originally an independent orginism that eventually had a symbiotic relationship with larger orginisms. It eventually became a part of the larger orginism. Mitochondria are, I believe, found within every living plant and animal, and still have a seperate genetic code.

I don’t think evolution works that way, I think it takes a long time to work. See, that’s the problem with some folks, it’s not instantaneous, like microwave popcorn, you have to wait a while for things to develop.
And, please correct me if I’m wrong, but not just one thing evolves over time, I think your “one thing” that woke up one day and wanted to live, probably had other things that woke up and wanted the same thing.
Now, if you are calling evolution an irrational theory, what is rational to you to explain how we got where we are?

John, LMAO on that 3:06!
You know one of the many interesting things about these blogs is how many of the participants here are so invested in being absolute correct about everything they write that they will go to such extraordinary lengths.
I mean, who but the most immature would get their panties in such an enormous twist about ANY of this stuff, that they come to literally hate their opponents and so consistently rely on insults and juvenile venom as a valued “debating” tool?
(Hey! New book idea, Debating tools for Tools!)
Let’s face it, none of us are paleontologists, climatologists, economists, political scientists or even remotely experts regarding the many other things we discuss here. Though a few fancy themselves as such.
But we can all read, learn and inform ourselves to the extent of our individual limitations.
I personally don’t write what I do to try and persuade or influence any who oppose me. It is neither practical not worthwhile IMHO.
And as you can probably tell, I choose to only engage those who will have discourse on an adult level, and who can show the self-discipline to avoid all juvenile, personal slurs, name calling and attacks, no matter how great their passion is on ANY topic.
I truly wish there were more here who fit this criteria of mine, as I believe that opposing viewpoints, well reasoned and well stated, can be the most valuable. And it is from those, that I look even closer at my own.
Nor do I write to win any popularity contests here or seek support for my opinions, though numerous people over time have spoken up on my behalf and I always truly appreciate them for doing so. Some are complete blogging strangers.
Rather it is this very brotherhood of like-minded souls exchanging ideas and information that gives me the most enjoyment for now.
And I am glad you have joined this gang as your humor and insight are to be valued, at least by this blogger!

LuckoDuh,
With respect to your Bin Laden post, would you explain to these libs why getting these messages from Bin Laden 6 years, one month and 11 days after 9/11 demonstrates Bush’s success in the War on Terror? I don’t think they get it. You know, because they are stupid libs.
If a Democrat were in power he would have been at large like 15 years by now.
My point to the libs is that Bush said he wanted Bin Laden “Dead or Alive” and he certainly is the latter so I call that success. If he had said that he wanted him dead or captured then that would be a complete failure obviously, but he never said that. Bush was clear that he would be perfectly happy if Bin Laden were alive.
BTW: For all of those people out there who think that the right would be totally in hysterics if a Democrat had taken this long to capture or kill Bin Laden they are probably right, but that would be a completely different set of facts. First of all, the liberals claim that Government can do some things right. We have never said that and we prove it to be true every day we are in charge of it. If you aren’t convinced at the ineptitude of Government you clearly haven’t been paying attention these last 7 years.

Speaking of antis — after reading about the protests against the World Bank in Georgetown last week I dropped into a website put up for members of NEAN, the global anti-capitalist organization.
It was hilarious. The site’s host was accusing one of his more reasonable contributors of being a fed spying on his site. Back and forth…back and forth they went until some anti-capitalist came in screaming IN ALL CAPS that it was time to arm themselves and take out the capitalist pigs.
Strange and violent people they are!
Violence does little for protesters’ cause
I couldn’t agree more. One of them hurled a brick at some poor store clerk leaving her with a gaping wound in her forehead and a broken nose.

In this day and age where twisted and sometimes meaningless slogans and sound bites are used in lieu of proper verbiage, one of my pet peeves is the use of the misnamed term “pro-life”.
Why not just call it what it truly is? Anti-abortion.
Oh yeah. That doesn’t sell as well.
Unless one is completely against capital punishment (Romney is not) and perhaps even for the ending of all military killings, they are just exercising in mental masturbation.
I now fully expect the least literate here to try and put words in my mouth and say I’m equating murderers and terrorists with human fetuses. Any bets on it happening?
{{The doctor known as the founder of the pro-life movement has endorsed former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney in his bid for the Republican presidential nomination.
Dr. John Wilke, an original member of Senator Sam Brownback’s Exploratory Committee, has thrown his support to Romney in the wake of Senator Brownback’s withdrawal from the race.
“Unlike other candidates who only speak to the importance of confronting the major social issues of the day, Governor Romney has a record of action in defending life,” Dr. Willke said. “Every decision he made as governor was on the side of life. I know he will be the strong pro-life president we need in the White House, Governor Romney is the only candidate who can lead our pro-life and pro-family conservative movement to victory in 2008.”}}

Bush Wants $46 Billion More for Wars
{WASHINGTON — President Bush will ask Congress for another $46 billion to fund the war in Iraq.}
Yep, that is $46 billion with a B.
{The figure, which Bush was expected to announce later Monday at the White House, brings to $196.4 billion the total requested by the administration for operations in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere for the budget year that started Oct. 1.}
yep, thats $196 billion with a B.
{The figures were disclosed by congressional officials briefed on the request and who spoke on condition of anonymity because the announcement had not yet been made.}
To date, Congress has already provided more than $455 billion for the Iraq war, with stepped-up military operations running about $10 billion a month. The war has claimed the lives of more than 3,830 members of the U.S. military and more than 73,000 Iraqi civilians.

Nat Geographic:
There’s a tendency for people to take this temperature increase and draw quick conclusions, which is a mistake,” said Douglas R. Hardy, a climatologist at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, who monitored Kilimanjaro’s glaciers from mountaintop weather stations since 2000. “The real explanations are much more complex. Global warming plays a part, but a variety of factors are really involved.”
According to Hardy, forest reduction in the areas surrounding Kilimanjaro, and not global warming, might be the strongest human influence on glacial recession. “Clearing for agriculture and forest fires—often caused by honey collectors trying to smoke bees out of their hives—have greatly reduced the surrounding forests,” he says. The loss of foliage causes less moisture to be pumped into the atmosphere, leading to reduced cloud cover and precipitation and increased solar radiation and glacial evaporation.
Thats what I got. So what do you have that tells you the sun is getting hotter?

It would be impossible for the sun to get hotter. The chain reactions that keep the sun from imploding are taking place at a steady rate and the temperature can vary only one standard deviation from the mean or else it would mean that we couldn’t sell magazines or advertising space when we talk so ignorantly about the sun, which nobody knows anything about, not really.
But we like to assure ourselves that we are in control. People are so afraid. It doesn’t take much to set them off. This war is a mistake because it is a rise in the temperature of the sum of the people’s total stress. Day after day more war and more war and OMG what’s gonna happen…etc.
This war is going to ruin us. It’s already lasted longer than the thirty years war, the hundred years war and the thousand year reich combined!

AmVet. Amazing! I’ve known Dr. Wilke since the late early 1970’s, at which time called on him as a pharma company rep dozens of times in Cincinnati. He was courteous back then, but very, very strange. Then came his all out crusade for anti-abortion. It just grew and grew and the intolerance was just overwhelming. Cincy is the perfect city and surely the most right-wing in the nation. Always been that way. Charley Keating of the infamous S&L scandal out West was an attorney & my next-door neighbor. In the late 50’s he started “Citizens For Decency.” It grew into the country’s largest anti-porn, phoney religious operation of them all. w a slight name change. Still headquartered in Cincy today. Also in Cincy began the first nest of “Citizens For Community Values” which has also spread throughout the nation. Headquartered in Cincy. In the 70’s, several of us often gathered at the office of an attorney buddy which was directly across the hall from Keating’s office. Every other Thursday night a group would gather in Keating’s office to “examine” porn films. Physical freaks! We took some fun candid photos of them & had a ball w them in Cincy. Gawd, I could list names, events, behavior galore. Several of these Cincy freaks were appointed to Ray-Gun’s/Meese’s “porn commission.” Sooo much history and fact and documentation available on all this. The guy who started “Community Values” (His name will come to me in 5 minutes) repeatedly admitted to the ultra-conservative Cincy Enquirer that he had spent 15 years in his house (married w children) and his car, masturbating to the Sunday newspaper ads for girls’ underwear and swimsuits. EVERY day, EVERY week. “Then I got into the REALLY HARD STUFF - Playboy and Penthouse. Masturbating to THAT as well.” (sic) (It’s all still there in the Enquirer archives. Today the guy is on numerous church boards, Cincy business boards, library boards, and a frequent guest in Bush’s White House, as well as frequent speaker to Congress re that “DREADED PORN.” How’s that for credentials?? Gee, I’m glad you brought it up! I don’t spend much time here - too much right-wing filth. But let me know if you want details. Small world, eh. (Gotta remember THE MASTUBATING HERO’S name! Our sun is small — less than 8 solar masses. Therefore we really don’t have to worry about our sun ever going supernova.
However it may turn into a red giant someday. That would pretty much toast planet earth to a crispy molten ball of lava in no time. most all teh planets in our solar system would be gone.
Lets just hope Andy is wrong about the sun being the cause for global warming, because if it is — then the sky really is falling and “The End is Nigh’!”…
If global warming is man-made then lets do something about it - besides cleaning up teh environment is still a good thing for mankind. — if Global warming is not man made — well that really blows because things are only going to get worse.
Sun -=> Red Giant -=> Planetary Nebula -=> White Dwarf… Not even a black hole for our sun…
Cheers —

Gary, funny stuff about the “ultra-orthodox” in Cincy!
Ed Meese. Now there’s an unpleasant blast from the past!
Talk about COMPLETELY hung up!
And to think that nearly thirty years down the road these frauds and prudes, have yet to learn a thing and are still at it.
It is a complete mystery to me that this “pro-family conservative values” crowd has even a shred of credibility with most in this nation.
But then again, perhaps they really don’t.

He says that the increased solar brightness over the past 20 years has not been enough to cause the observed climate changes but believes that the impact of more intense sunshine on the ozone layer and on cloud cover could be affecting the climate more than the sunlight itself.
Dr Bill Burrows, a climatologist and a member of the Royal Meteorological Society, welcomed Dr Solanki’s research. “While the established view remains that the sun cannot be responsible for all the climate changes we have seen in the past 50 years or so, this study is certainly significant,” he said.
Now which part of your own link’s article will you believe is true, and which part is false?

Did RE really just blame the beekeepers for Mount Kilimanjaro’s icemelt, oh my Gawd, he did:
{{{{By RE October 22, 2007 4:53 PM According to Hardy, forest reduction in the areas surrounding Kilimanjaro, and not global warming, might be the strongest human influence on glacial recession. {{{{{{{{{{“Clearing for agriculture and forest fires—often caused by honey collectors trying to smoke bees out of their hives—have greatly reduced the surrounding forests,”}}}}}}}}}}} he says. The loss of foliage causes less moisture to be pumped into the atmosphere, leading to reduced cloud cover and precipitation and increased solar radiation and glacial evaporation.}}}}
Any idiot knows that the forests have quadrupled in size over the last several decades, people don’t cut trees down to burn wood any more.
(They will start anew if al Gore gets his way.)
This is the most patently ridiculous thing I have ever heard, that came from the National Geographic?
These people are stupider then I thought.
{{{{That appears to be what is happening, judging from three papers in the May 6 issue of Science. These three papers argue that the amount of incoming solar radiation reaching the surface of the earth has increased dramatically in the last two decades. While the values vary from paper to paper, in toto the new studies suggest that the increase in solar radiation absorbed at the earth’s surface had almost 10 times as much warming power during that time as the concurrent increases in carbon dioxide, the main global warming gas. Therefore, the warming observed over the past 20 years must have little to do with changes in greenhouse gases.}}}}
{{{{Data gathered by NASA’s Mars Global Surveyor spacecraft suggest that the martian climate may have changed significantly in the past, and may be changing quickly even now. According to two papers published in the Dec. 7, 2001, issue of Science, these changes may happen over a much shorter time scale than scientists previously thought.}}}}

He finds humor where there’s humor — courage where there’s courage — loss where’s there’s loss, and the human heart right where it’s supposed to be — in your chest or in your throat. It depends on the story.

gtengineer, So if evolution is an undisputed fact, why do they still call it the “theory” of evolution? Yes there are lots of things that support the “theory”, but there are so many unexplainable gaps in the “theory” they can’t call it a “fact”. You can, because thats what you’ve chosen to believe, but the facts don’t support it beyond “theory”.
Where are all the 1 eyed creatures, anyway? Did EVERY species decide it wanted 2 eyes instead of 1? And if 2 eyes were better than 1, what about 3, or 4? Wouldn’t that be better? So where are the 3 and 4 eyed animals? Or plants with eyes?
And when the genetically mutated monkey improved it’s DNA to make it superior to every other monkey on the planet, what did it mate with? A genetically inferior monkey?
And speaking of mating, when that first genetic mutation occured making more than 1 sex, did 2 separate mutations occur at the same time creating the male and female versions vs. the asexual one it started with? So 2 completly random DNA changes occured at the same time creating male and female species in the same place(if they hadn’t happen at the same time and in the same place, the mutant wouldn’t have had anything to mate with…)??? For every animal species on the planet? Come on.. You’re making this stuff up!!

See it as one of the seven signs of the apocalypse or take it however you want. Believe it or not, today I actually agree with Lucko and Bookman. Atlanta’s chickens have finally come to roost.
Georgia’s water crisis isn’t being caused by “GLOBAL WARMING” as most screwball tree-huggers would have you believe. Georgia’s water crisis is being caused by years and years of Metro Atlanta’s GREED, ARROGANCE, CORRUPTION (see Fulton and Gwinnett County governments, just for starters) mismanagement (ABUSE) OF THE LAND and WATER resources and over self-indulgence and exuberance. The State of Georgia and Metro Atlanta governments have been in bed for years with developers and now our government’s slutty infidelities and all-around unfaithfulness to the people of Georgia have come back to burn us all like a cheatin’ husband or wife that fools around one too many times and brings home an “unpleasant surprise” to the spouse one night. Now we’re all “burned”, or worse, by dwindling water supplies with the all-too-real-possibility of thirst and starvation because our local governments never met a developer they didn’t like. Those two (Georgia goverment and developers) have been at it so much that they’ve single-handedly kept the roadside motel business afloat for years, why I think I just saw them on that show “Cheaters” the other day. Now the good people of Georgia are in need of a trip to the clinic for penicilin because of their government’s “Cheatin’ Heart”. I hope it’s something that can be cured…

AmVet. Got it . PHIL BURRESS is the founder of “CCV.” “Citizens for Community Values.” He is a REALLY a big whell in and around Cincinnati. And his name is often seen nationally whenever anti-porn, Christian Values groups meet. (A new name to remeber for all those interested in “OUR NATION’S DOWNFALL.”) (sic) Phil especially enjoyed his 15 years of masturbating in his CAR. “MY CAR WAS MY FAVORITE PLACE.” (sic) In public parks and large school parking lots. THAT’S when he decided he HAD to do something about this “CREEPING EVIL.” The particular lengthy Cincinnati Enquirer article I quote is circa a Sunday, about 1985.
Phil and the CCV should be all over the internet. Look up “Cincinnati/ Citizens for Community Values” or “CCV” and you should discover the motherlode. There should be explanations and lists of all the good, wholesome Christian things they do for our society. CCV is BIG. All thanks to a fine, respectable, Republican who spent decades masturbating within sight and earshot of our children - and Gawd only knows what else he did/does. The Repub party has ALWAYS had lotsa room for guys like Phil and his followers. The need grows by the day. They make up a huge portion of the Repub constituency nationally. Phil Burress and CCV - proud names to remember. God, I love it!

You may want to read National Geographic’s “Was Darwin Wrong” for a fuller treatment of “theory” - “That’s what scientists mean when they talk about a theory: not a dreamy and unreliable speculation, but an explanatory statement that fits the evidence. They embrace such an explanation confidently but provisionally—taking it as their best available view of reality, at least until some severely conflicting data or some better explanation might come along.”

Darwin: How could he be correct? He came. He saw. He pondered. His theory has beauty because it explains diversity and the mechanism for diversity. A genetic change gives a moth a slight advantage that over 200 million years would make that moth dominant. It explains why moths look like they look today, instead of looking different than they look today.
But it’s hardly a fact. And it sort of backs into the truth, and it feels like a plugged number. It just allows us to imagine a possible way in which the universe evolved.
We are monkeys when it comes to understanding our universe. So when someone comes up with something that has beauty and passes initial scrutiny, we worship him.
Was Darwin wrong? Of course he’s wrong. Einstein was wrong. So what? His theory is amazing. Try understanding one word of it. Know what? You cant.

Do this only in emergency. Go to #2 otherwise. Use paper plates, plastic utensils, & save every drop of H2O for plants, toilet, pets, etc. You CAN get by using 3-4 gal. of H2O/day. At best you can find some expert who questions aspects of the hypothesis.
