As it shifts to “right” position.

So here’s a little something

Does the Atlanta Journal Constitution have any business mocking the Wall Street Journal for Lindsay Lohan news? The AJC is a wanna be smut Hollywood sleaze bucket special, 24/7, just go to AJC.com and see for yourself if you don’t believe me.
The WSJ hasn’t ever printed a pointless harlot article, not one.
Do you liberals re create your world every morning when you get out of bed?
~~~~~~
{{{{Outside that world, the Vick saga looms large, the subject of countless Weblogs, sports talk shows and watercooler conversations. Robert Byrd (D-W.Va.) took to the Senate floor in full-throated outcry over dead dogs, but there have been no similar speeches from the high and mighty memorializing Annaijh and castigating her alleged assailants. Children like her simply don’t command that sort of attention — in life or in death.-Cynthia Tucker}}}}
Ummm, who works at the “news” paper and has the ability to change the news coverage from AJC Goofy to serious, you or your readers?
Geez.
~~~~~~
When you have no evidence on a man that causes you to suffer from extreme paranoia and raging delusions, these are the kind of things you will resort to:
A 2004 report by the inspector general found no basis for a claim by then-Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry that White House political advisers interfered in developing water policy in the Klamath River Basin in California and Oregon. But investigators did not ask about Cheney —- and no Interior employee volunteered information about him, said Mary Kendall, deputy Interior inspector general.
Think infantile, AJC, infantile.

Andy-saq, you know that Mike’s “opinion” doesn’t necessarily represent the AJC, its owners, or its reader base right?
Really what he is talking about here is what Murdock did to the “New York Post”. He was able to turn a respectable news paper into a paper no different that the National Enquirer.
That is what everyone is afraid of, especially the writers, that Murdock will use the WSJ for his own personal gain, and further lower the quality of news and reporting that so many have warned about. Especially the writers of the WSJ.
It’s kind of funny that you crazy neo-cons claims to be open market and small businesses, but you have no problem with someone forming basically a Monopoly in the news market. Though, I guess as long as someone tells you what you want to hear so that it makes you feel better inside as a person, you don’t mind, because no one should question anything or anyone… especially the government.

WASHINGTON - Democrat John Edwards said the Bush administration’s plan to sell $20 billion worth of weapons to friendly Arab states amounted to a foreign policy of convenience and he will take a tougher stance with Saudi Arabia if elected president.

Bush Terrorism Strategy:
WE MUST invade and bring democracy to Iraq, a country that had minor ties to terrorism, by helping to solidify a new Iraqi gov’t that is comprised of terrorists…so that we can be safer from terrorism.
WE MUST sell massive amounts of high tech weaponry to a completely undemocratic, totalitarian regime (Saudi Arabia) that represses women and minorities, and is one of the worlds worst enablers of terrorism…so that we can be safer from terrorism.
WE MUST support a military dictatorship that overthrew a democratically elected gov’t to gain power (Pakistan) with billions in aid and weapons AND is one of the worlds worst enablers of terrorism AND allow for the establishment of safe havens for the terrorist organization responsible for 9/11…so that we can be safer from terrorism.

So instead of trying to promote peace in the region, we’re just going to arm our friends in the region up to the gills and hope for the best! Won’t Russia sell arms to our “non friends?” Probably? By chance? Things aren’t so swell between us and Russia right now — isn’t that the case? Putin seems to (as the rest of the world) think Bush is quite the idiot?

Political analysis is not like running a mathematical formula - input values for the variables and always get the same answer. It’s not even like cooking, using chef’s discretion. It’s a lot like the intel community - best guess, given certain assumptions. In this case, I think the operative words were “has the capacity.” The last phrase makes clear he’s speaking of a future event - if certain actions leading up to that event are taken.
Plus - being wrong on one event doesn’t mean the other events are wrong. A tax attorney who gives an opinion later found to be at odds with a subsequent court decision does not have all of his other opinions labeled “wrong.”
Big picture here: are the Dems in the House playing politics by intentionally crafting a bill at odds with the Senate version to provoke a veto?

Not necessarily. Iraq and Iran fought each other to a bloody standstill. Both were significantly weakened. Another factor to consider: when the Shah of Iran was overthrown, Iran had one of the most modern air forces in the region. It takes spare parts, regular maintenance and contractor support to maintain that status. The US froze spare parts and other support. The air force (equipment) rapidly deteriorated. Same with Iran (until those greedy capitalistic French stepped in. Arms sales are just worth way too much to the major powers). So there is continuing leverage that can be exerted.

Paul, You have apparently forgotten, that in the 80’s Reagan/Bush provided billions in high tech weaponry to Saddam, Iran and to the Afghans that would later form the Taliban.
Our support for Iran was clandestine, but you may remember a minor scandal called Iran/Contra that thankfully exposed this illegal foreign policy. You should read up on it when you have a moment.
Our support and enabling of Saddam Hussein during the 80’s was multi-faceted, however. We provided intelligence, chemical/biological and high-tech weapons, training up to AND AFTER he used those chemical weapons on his own people.
Even more devastating, were the high-tech weapons, training, etc. we provided to Afghans in the 80’s (some of the same people that would go on create Al Qaeda and form the Taliban).
These are dark, ugly truths that we SHOULD be acknowledge and be ashamed of (and vow to not repeat).
Unfortunately, we are likely making equally fatal decisions with Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and the Sunni Insurgents in Iraq as we speak…

Sorry about that. Not necessarily” referred to
“We sold weapons to Saddam Hussein, right? That didn’t work out so well.”
Point was just we arm various people/countries at various times as our geopolitical aims change. High tech weapons require a lot of follow-on support (which usually costs lots more over the life of the system than the weapon itself). If the countries who have the weapons later become less than friendly, we stop the spare parts and maintenance support. The weapons become degraded or inoperative.
While I can give you some responses to your questions, it’d be more in the mode of answering, not advocating. I’ve long been a skeptic and critic of Foreign Military Sales. There are valid arguments on both sides. DoD web sites (and some major weapons manufacturers) post policy papers on why it’s a good thing.
BTW - just saw this:

The illegal activities were more along “how” it was done. I was commenting a little on the “why” and a lot on how these actions are not permanent.
I think a lot of this latest sale (which we - at least those of us here who pay Federal taxes are gonna pay for for a long time) is as much to put pressure on Iraq as anything. Again, I don’t necessarily agree. Just thinking about the “why” and “why now.”

Pervez Musharraf that he must do more to shut down terrorist operations in his country and evict foreign fighters under an Obama presidency, or Pakistan will risk a U.S. troop invasion and losing hundreds of millions of dollars in U.S. military aid.
“Let me make this clear,” Obama said in a speech prepared for delivery at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. “There are terrorists holed up in those mountains who murdered 3,000 Americans. They are plotting to strike again. It was a terrible mistake to fail to act when we had a chance to take out an al-Qaida leadership meeting in 2005. India and Pakistan have come extremely close to a nuclear exchange in the recent past. A couple of times. Land disputes, among other reasons. But fundamentalist Muslims view Hindus as possibly worse infidels than Jews or Christians (not “people of the book” after all, worship idols and such). So if I were an Indian government minister, I would not be casual about the actions of a fundamentalist Islamic regime in Pakistan. “Use it or lose it” could be given serious attention.
Watcher 10:53
So the actions of Musharaff’s political opposition, in the face of US invasion over Musharaff’s objections, could be what? And if M is overthrown, who would likely ascend? And a new government’s policies towards the US and Islamic fundamentalism would be what? And Pakistan’s controls over their nukes would be how strong? And the US response to war between India and Pakistan would be what? The response of other Moslem governments towards India would be what? Just for fun, speculate on the response a few years down the road of Iran with nukes.

So poor lil’ liberal IN THE NEWS had to fall back on that old line “I’m for truth, justice and the American way.”
I’m for those generalities also and I make the personal choice to support the country visibly and verbably, extend justice to our troops by supporting them, and I choose the American way of supporting the country, not the enemy’s evil intentions.
IN THE NEWS is deliberately encouraging the enemy by reporting ONLY the bad news that makes terrorists think they are winning.
In the liberal hate pattern for President Bush, liberals think they are justified in working against the war, supporting the enemy and visibly seeking defeat.
That is truth. Working against your country is neither justice nor the American way.

I have too much to say and not enough time to say it.
Do you see the irony (or hypocrisy) of condemning Iran for supplying shaped-charge explosives to Sunni insurgents who direct them at our soldiers when our CIA provided Stinger missles to the Taliban to kill Russians? It really all depends upon whose side you’re on.
The whole Mid-East arms deal may be less about who balances out who and more about how much money can be funneled to American arms manufacturers. I mean c’mon, how many of these countries have been willing and able to fire a shot in anger? Saudi Arabia (seldom). The same for most of the others.

Bosch,
“Winning in Iraq” means having a slogan to keep to 25% of us with out a functioning cerebral cortex behind the President so that he can run out the clock and then the GOP can blame the Dem’s for losing. We’ve seen this playbook before. There are tapes of Nixon and Kissinger saying “the war is lost.” Did they quit? Hell no! They kept sending kids to die until the wimpy American people elected a Congress who cut off the funding. Then they blamed the loss on the Dems after they had already said it was lost. Isn’t that great?
This is the same playbook again 35 years later. Run out the clock, let the wimpy people elect Dems who pull us out and then claim that victory was at hand but the Dems are wimps and quit. Then you use the whole affair as a cautionary tale for generations to claim that you can’t trust Dems on National Security. So winning in Iraq means the Dems losing in Iraq.
Damn I love the GOP. You just have to love a group of people who avoid service, wrap themselves in the flag and use dead soldiers for political gain. It really is a marvelous thing to watch.

By “rhetorical” I meant “no answer required - just something to think about.” I’m concerned about what would happen in the event of an American ground invasion of Pakistan. Just some of Rumsfeld’s “known unknowns.”
As I said the other day, I’m not convinced killing bin Laden or not killing him will have much impact. Is the establishment of training sites, not just refuge sites, in Pakistan a problem? Yes. Is American ground force intervention the only solution? I don’t think so.
BTW - the “for oil” argument strikes me as a rather weak derivation of the “Bush/Oil/Republican Corporation” agenda of the radical Left. I’m just saying it doesn’t hold up under scrutiny. As I’ve said, if we wanted to conquer a country to gain their oil (even though we could get all the oil we can consume under the current arrangement) then Venezuela would have been a better target. We coulda built a pipeline right across the Gulf to Louisiana or Texas!

Dusty,
I think that you are being disingenous when you say that your support for the war is support for the country. First, most Americans (that 70% without severe brain damage) don’t support it. Isn’t this a democracy where the majority rules? So if you support the country shouldn’t you be against the war. Second, if the next President says that its in our country’s best interest to get out of Iraq, will you support the President or “undermine” the President verbally and visibly?
The point is that what we support is not the troops, its not the Country, its the President, period. Don’t try to make yourself anymore noble than anyone else, because we are not. We are just lemmings for Bush who are willing to leap off the cliff on his command. That’s not patriotism, its insanity.

Nearly all of you are wrong about Murdoch. His political agenda is secondary to his primary objective, which is building the world’s biggest media empire while making tons of money at it.
Let’s step into the “wayback machine” to two years ago when the Times of London (Murdoch owned) broke the “Downing Street Minutes” story, summing up a secret memo written after a meeting between high ranking officials of then British Prime Minister Blair’s government at those from President Bush. It concluded that the Bush administration was “fixing the facts (on WMDs) to justify the policy” of invading Iraq. i. e. Bush reps were lying.
Did heads roll at the Times of London? Was there a published correction or retraction? Nope, nope, and nope. The Times makes money, and that’s all Rupert cares about. Hey, he’s the guy behind “The Simpsons” and “Married… with Children.” Not exactly metaphors for the stable American family.
I predict the WSJ will maintain both it’s responsible news department and it’s psycho right wing editorial department, even if it costs him some bucks. It’ll have tremendous synergy with his “Fox Business Channel”, set to launch in October. Watch out CNBC.
Andy, your comparison of the NY Post to the AJC shows you’ve never read the Post, which is an anomoly in the Murdoch empire. It barely breaks even. He just wants a working man’s paper in the nation’s biggest city. An ego thing. The only other US paper he’s ever bought was the Chicago Sun-Times in ‘84 or so, and he sold it within a year. If he could get away with it, he’d put a page 3 girl in the Post, like in his UK based Sun (a bare breasted bimbo invariably described as an “aspiring actress.)”

Dusty,
You are the best useful idiot that the President could ever hope for! Keep up the good work. I’m sure your parents were the same useful idiots for Nixon when he privatly said that the war was lost but publicly continued the war and pressured the Congress to fund it. If we can just keep useful idiots like you in line then we can keep this Iraq War in the air until the people elect leaders to pull us out so that you can say victory was at hand.
Tips on staying a useful idiot:
1) Never ask how our military can win a political battle in the Iraqi Parliment.
2) Never question whether progress can be had while the people that need to be making the progress are on vacation.
3) Never worry about the fact that the Iraqi politicians are taking a month off because its hot, but our troops keep working and dying in the heat
4) Never worry about the fact that if Iraq is ever going to protect itself from its enemies that we are going to have to give them weaponry that will exceed that which they had before and may end up used against the troops or fall into the hands of terrorists
5) Never worry about the fact that whether we stay 5, 10, 20, 50 years that the day we leave there will be a battle of Shia and Sunni funded by the Saudis and the Iranians for control of that country
6) Never worry that it will cost the tax payers 1 billion dollars and thousands of dead and wounded troops simply to protect Bush from having to face the failure of Iraq while still in office
7) Never worry that these men and women in uniform died, in part, because you were too stupid to see that there was no victory to be had in Iraq before the mission began
8) Never concern yourself with Reagan’s repeated insistence that the military should never be sent into battle without a clear, achievable goal and an exit strategy
If you follow these tips you will remain a completely brain dead useful idiot long enough for Bush to pass this off the a Democratic President. It’s what I’m planning on.

Musty@11:36,
You are hardly worth replying too. But since most are your guesses are wrong, why not?
I don’t have a pool. I do have a bird bath. I don’t swim in it.
Majority rules at the ballot box. We are not into brain washing so freedom of speech is our own opinion, not just what the majority or anybody else wants us to say.
When you use freedom of speech to aid the enemy during wartime, it is called something else, the nicest being propaganda for the enemy. How far you want to carry that is up to you and the law.
I prefer to support our country without having to explain it. That is NOT politically correct. You are supposed to say nice things about any and every whacko (open minded), moral and ethics should not affect your decisions (let it all hang out). The “sagacity of celebrities” is prominent, and many in academe have shifted to far left instruction instead of enriching the mind.
As the old expressions goes, “Never call a spade a spade.” It is all kum-ba-ya.
Anyway, musty, we disagree. “Left is left and right is right and never the twain shall meet”. So it seems.

Dusty says, “When you use freedom of speech to aid the enemy during wartime, it is called something else.”
Does it have to be your purpose to aid the enemy or can that just be a happenstance result? Or does the difference even matter?
Should we have an election during wartime? It would seem to me that if we are going to have candidates debating the war in this election cycle that those statements could be used by the enemy.
Should the elections be cancelled?
Should only pro-war candidates be allowed to run?
Should we jail people who do polling? I can see Bin Laden using Bush’s approval rating as propaganda. In fact, Bush’s 28% rating may be very good proaganda.
Should people who conduct polls or report the results be determined to be enemy combatants and locked away?
Should people who say to a pollster that they don’t approve of the President knowing that their answer could be compiled with others to result in a number that is a propaganda tool, be put in prison?
In a time of war you are likely to have press, media types, bloggers, opinion columnists etc… say things against the President. These things are easily accessible to the enemy. Should we suspend free speech until the war is over?
Do not suggest that your response does not logically lead to the conclusion that your answer to each of these questions is “yes.”
Of course, you are right in each response, but I’d like to see if you are willing to own it like I am.

Debbie’s first link (PDF) was an interesting history of Pakistan/India relations. Page 30 made me go hmmmmm.
One article, one opinion piece I read this morning in a Pakistani paper. Bhutto and Musharraf didn’t talk directly to discuss a power sharing alliance in the interest of Pakistan. Instead they had interlocutors do it for them.
Precondition of a Musharraf/Bhutto alliance. Ditch the uniform Perez. He wanted time to put his people in place in the military. Now the message to Bhutto.
Therefore, it is supposed, given the presidency’s statement about indirect contacts, that the ISI chief might have discussed with Benazir, in the words of the spokesman, the “fight against militancy, extremism and terrorism and holding of free and fair general elections”
(((In view of the presidency’s declaration, it is quite possible that top UAE leaders, present on the occasion, also worked as “indirect contacts” between Musharraf and Benazir.)))
Off to China, the country my Dad, career military man said should be closely watched.
I asked my husband the other day if I should be worried about China nuking us. His response was “Who would buy their bras?”
Opinion piece.

Dusty @11:19 I’m for those generalities also and I make the personal choice to support the country visibly and verbably, extend justice to our troops by supporting them, and I choose the American way of supporting the country, not the enemy’s evil intentions
Dust ball - you make me laugh at almost every post, but this one was classic! Please, do expound your Dustiness, how do you visibly support our troops? Are you involved with a particular relief organization, do you write a homesick soldier letters of encouragement? Please inspire us all with your story of patriotic courage and sacrifice for our troops…listen up people, this should be good :)

Ah, but Americans are now much more enamored of celebrity! New definition for “optimist”: one who thinks soccer has a real chance in America.
Murdoch: others think “conservative conspiracy/mind control.” Murdoch thinks “$$$$$$.”
Off topic: your “LCD” (lowest common denominator) jogged my memory regarding the other definition, LCD as in hi-def. If you enjoy movies on DVD, you may want to check out oppodigital.com. Upscaling DVD players (DVDs are 480p, hi-def sets are 720p or 1080p native resolution). They are excellent at upscaling to the native format. Cnet highly recommended them. Faroudja scaler. Prices are under $225 or so. Rated almost as good as a $700 Denon. Noticeable, incredible difference. Even on a high-end hi-def set.
Yeah, they’re Chinese. Go figure.

Right on my brother. Just make sure you say “pitch” instead of “field” next time. ;)
N-GA,
The “personality” thing actually worked in that it attracted more American youth to play soccer. As the kids have grown and matured, we have made it to 5 consecutive World Cup Finals tournaments, which was unthinkable before that. Ultimately, what killed that professional league, NASL, was financial mismanagement. A true pity indeed.

Dusty supports the troops by wishing we kill more terrurusts.
In the mean time we undermined the very government we built there by arming Sunni militias that hate AQI terrurusts, but at the same time hate the Government we built.
In the mean time, we have to stay longer because of the circle jerk we created, which in turn gets more of our troops killed.
Basically, Dusty supports the troops by wishing more of them were killed.
Oh, yeah, and ignore the weapon deals we just made to each side, who, I might add, are mortal enemies of one another’s.

Good afternoon all!
I note with some interest that there are a few “football” fans here.
Let me preface my comments by saying I know little about soccer, but wanted to share a couple of observations.
As most know, many Americans have the attention span of a gnat and that is why even our national pass time is pooh poohed so often, Too slow, too boring, etc.
Maybe because I don’t find that to be the case at all, I think soccer is a pretty cool game.
I remember one match (again forgive any ignorance in terms, etc - I’m a novice!) where I believe it was Milan and Barcelona were playing. And for about 10 minutes, believe it or not, it was just scintillating action. It was like hockey on a pitch!
Pass, pass, pass, shoot! Then the other team would immediately recover and get the ball and the same thing would happen - great breakout passes, incredible touch, bounce pass, a header - GGGGOOOOAAAALLLL! And back and forth it went.
Granted this happens very rarely, but if I wasn’t before, I was hooked. (BTW I was stationed in England years ago and was always mildly interested in the FA Cup. And very cool team names!)
In light of the thuggery in major American professional sports, especially the NFL and NBA, I find “football” a nice change.

AmVet, Yes, soccer is non-stop action, and strategy of pure wit and skill, that is the beauty of it. No pads (except shin guards). Hell, the clock doesn’t even stop. If someone gets hurt, they lay there until they either a) get up or b) carried off the field (which is rare). No time-outs (time-out is for wimps).
Unless you’ve ever played, very few appreciate just how hard it is to control the ball, and soccer players are the fastest in the world - our football players are nothing compared to soccer players. They run fast in one direction, soccer players have to run equally as fast, stop on a dime, and change directions in a fraction of a second.
Aw, the beautiful game, AmVet, I’m like you with baseball, it is very close to a religion!
Football (soccer) has it’s thugs too, that’s for sure, but soccer players would definitely know better than to flip off their fans. They would be murdered in their sleep! :-) One thing that is horribly dangerous to one’s health is to really p** off a soccer fan.

Bosch, I did presume that soccer had its share of thuggery too.
I remember one night in Ipswich a few of us were walking down the sidewalk and out of a pub come a dozen or more obviously drunk guys singing football songs. Though my friends and I can all handle ourselves quite well, we knew better than to even get near those blokes!
Do they also have steroid and HGH scandals? And the “fixing” of games by refs and managers?
And though I admittedly don’t follow the game much, I do know there is much hoopla regarding Beckham coming here.
Isn’t this kinda like ARod going to play for a Triple A team? I thought the competition in this country was paltry to say the least compared with Europe and elsewhere.
Also is world soccer in danger of following American pro sports in that prima donna players who have no integrity for the game are revered anyway?

And yes, dust ball, I have many humanitarian interests…none of which I feel compelled to reveal to you…you don’t seem to grasp compassion well anyway. I would have thought since you are constantly squawking, “support the troops, support the troops!” that you would at least be actively participating in USO, ASU, Soldiers Angel Foundation, or Something! I don’t think you can call shaking the preacher’s hand after church and commenting on how sorry you are his boys are dodging bullets supporting the troops any more than you can call posting an opposing opinion on the war on a blog non-supportive. Life is not as simple as it seems sitting on a comfy pew on a Sunday morning. Life asks hard questions and there are no simple cut n paste answers. THINK! QUESTION! DISCERN!

AmVet, There was a huge scandal last year about players and refs fixing games in Italy. That’s why it killed me when Italy won the World Cup, because most of the players on the Italian team all played for club teams that were involved in that scandal.
I think all professional sports have their steroid scandals, but soccer is so much of a team sport, one player having a physical advantage (which, in my opinion, is the reason for taking steroids) wouldn’t make much of a difference. But I’m sure it happens.
Beckham coming to America is huge here, but not such a big deal globally. He is the most recognized football player in the world, but he’s over the hill as far as a player. He still has a few years left in him here in the States, but in Europe, he’s old news. Him leaving Europe isn’t much of a heartbreak for most fans (except maybe the lady fans)!
Professional American soccer players can still walk down the street and no one knows who they are, so, again, in my opinion, there aren’t any prima donnas, but again, in all professional sports, there is that potential. Any occupation where you make millions to kick, throw, or dribble a ball gives the person a sense of too much self importance.
American players are all working to play in Europe where they can earn huge salaries. Very few Americans have made it in leagues such as Germany’s Bundesliega or the English Premiere Leagues. That will take a few more years.
My love for the game is strictly based on the flow of the game and the incredible precision required. The more you watch the game, the better your appreciation will be. And another way to really appreciate the game, is to simply dribble a soccer ball around in a park, you’ll see exactly how hard it is to control it.
I never really appreciated tennis too much until I tried to play it, I always thought, how hard can that be? You hit a ball with a racket across a net? And then I quickly understood, and now I watch tennis with complete awe.

Raiseanidiot says: “Life asks hard questions and there are no simple cut n paste answers. THINK! QUESTION! DISCERN!”
Clearly you aren’t paying attention. The answers ARE easy. The right answers are those that are told to you. You libs’ problem is you do to much thinking and not enough listening. Do you think the founding fathers sat around and thought? Of course not. They rebelled simply because they had no real powerful centralized government to tell them what and how to think. King George was just too, I dunno, liberal, I guess would be the word. So the founding fathers had to form a new Government that installed a President who was infallible, could not be questioned and would have ultimate power over the citizens. His job is to tell you what to think and what not to think.
This idea that people should think leads to problems that we have today. Do you think that Bush would be at 28% if people quit thinking? No. He’d be in the high 90’s. Would our enemies be emboldened by Bush’s paltry numbers if we quit thinking? Of course not. They’d see one blindly stupid monolith supporting their President. Can you imagine facing a country of 300 million Dusty’s? It would be awfully scary wouldn’t it?
So Dusty has it right. Don’t even attempt to think. Just blindly support the President and everything will be ok.
It’s what the founders fought and died for. Don’t make their sacrifice be in vain by thinking for yourself.
Just remember that every independent thought makes the enemy stronger.

Harsh realities from the ground in Iraq:
MICHAEL WARE, CNN CORRESPONDENT: “Well, Anderson, there is progress. And that’s indisputable. Sectarian violence is down in certain pockets. There are areas of great instability in this country. They’re at last finding some stability.
The point, though, is, at what price? What we’re seeing is — is, to a degree, some sleight of hand. What America needs to come clean about is that it’s achieving these successes by cutting deals primarily with its enemies. We have all heard the administration praise the work of the tribal sheiks in turning against al Qaeda. Well, this is just a euphemism for the Sunni insurgency. That’s who has turned against al Qaeda.
And why? Because they offered America terms in 2003 to do this. And it’s taken America four years of war to come round to the Sunnis’ terms. And, principally, that means cutting the Iraqi government out of the loop. By achieving these successes, America is building Sunni militias.
Yes, they’re targeting al Qaeda, but these are also anti- government forces opposed to the very government that America created. And another thing to remember, Anderson, yes, sectarian violence is down, but let’s have a look at that. More than two million people have fled this country. Fifty thousand are still fleeing every month, according to the United Nations. So, there’s less people to be killed.
And those who stay increasingly are in ethnically cleansed neighborhoods. They have been segregated.”
A lot of stuff here that should at least make some of you cons think about the definition of ‘success…’
From what I have seen of Michael Ware, he seems to be a hard-nosed, straight shooter that gets outside the green zone more than any other reporter I have seen.

Another reason why I trust he won’t be nominated, current poll standings notwithstanding. All I can guess is he “looks” Presidential. Americans love appearances. Then again, there are some good things to be said regarding Massachusetts health care - Rudy’s coming across a bit too negative on that, I think.

I certainly, certainly hope not. Government coercion at its worst. Redeploying troops from around the world back to the US, massive reorganization, reducing duplicate headquarters and senior staff might just free up enough spaces and dollars to do it. That, and cancelling some major weapons systems like Rumsfeld wanted (had to have a little fun with this post) -

Uh yeah, a real unbiased “expert:”
Michael Ware, TIME Magazine’s Baghdad bureau chief appeared on Real Time with Bill Maher on Friday night. He called the situation in Iraq, like “watching a slow trainwreck” then goes on to tell Maher how is drinking now and that he’s drunk at the moment. He bashes Bush, says there is no good news coming from Iraq because in order to even go report he has to dodge getting blown up. Maher jumps in and compares the current status in Iraq to the Ma Lai Massacre in Vietnam.

Hi Paul, I’m sure you know I’m being facetious about bringing back the draft.
And though it MAY be possible to shift enough GIs around, I thought we were already perilously low on people in order to fulfill our military missions. Which obviously includes areas other than Iraq and Afghanistan.
My point is Goldie’s point? Where in the hell are we to get these 100,000 “new” troops? Realistically.
Rumsfeld was a major (play on words there!) screw up in some ways, but I agree that he was at least smart enough to see that equipping our military in terms of the ways conflicts have been fought in the past 75 years is no longer effective.
But then IMHO, not much about this invasion has been so far.

Goldie: Your left wing history may suggest otherwise, but how could we wingers say the things we say if YOUR history is correct? We couldn’t. Opinions such as “keep your mouth shut during war” or “dissent is treason” would just sound really stupid if you accept the liberal notion of history that is taught in school.
I was taught in liberal institutions that the Revolution was the result of an emergence of Classical Liberalim that suggested that the only legitimate soveriegn power derived from the people and the people had the right to overthrow or abolish governments who abused their power. These liberal institutions said that the founders feared centralized power and that the founders wanted checks on power so that it wouldn’t be abused. They recognized that placing war powers in the hands of the executive would subject the people to partcipating in wars that were personal to the executive or were simply fought for reasons other than national security, i.e, to gain power.
Now how could I believe that BS history and be a Right Winger? You simply can’t. Right Wing thought is premised on authoritarianism. That authoritarianism uses faux patriotism and faux morality to manipulate the people into ingnoring the fact that all the power is being taken away and placed into the hands of corporations and the military industrial complex at the expense of average people. It pits black agaisnt white. Gay against straight. Religious against agnostic. Liberal against conservatives. It divides and conquers. It never suggests that we are all in this together. Hell no, its the good guys dragging around these heathen, traitors around who hate the flag.
It claims that they are perfect. They never make mistakes. They never question their own decisions.
Now if I’m a winger. And if being Right wing is being an authoritarian. And if being authoritarian is American then doesn’t that mean that our Founders were authoritarian too. Otherwise you could call wingers UNAMERICAN, and that couldn’t be true could it?

From Stratfor…
(((Among those tasks and benchmarks is achieving the buy-in of the various Iraqi factions — by force if necessary — with the Iranians responsible for the Shia and the Americans responsible for the Sunnis and Kurds. But not everyone likes what Tehran and Washington are cooking up — and this leads to various, shall we say, objections. Some powers object by challenging the prime minister, others by threatening secession, yet others by backing Kurdish militants or interfering with military operations. The jihadists object by blowing up cheering soccer fans.
Chaos in Iraq is to be expected — not because it is a failed state (although it is) but because everything is up in the air, and a new political and military reality is being imposed by outsiders. Rebellion, violence, institutional failure and confusion are all natural byproducts.
Which means that “progress” — such as it is in Iraq — is now not only largely out of the hands of the Iraqis, but also largely outside of Iraq itself. The country’s future can no longer be ascertained by reading the local smoke signals, but only by looking at the wider region.)))

Whew! Thanks for clarifying. Interesting point on “enough” people. For years we gave defense enough money to fight two wars at the same time. Then it was one and a half (half war?). Then it was a couple of major regional conflicts. Now we see one sustained conflict and we’re “broke.” Okay, so it was a budgeting game. But now we have reality. Air Guard units are taking massive cuts - to plus up the active Army. Same true with other services, I imagine.
Still troubling - if you got’em the temptation is to use ‘em. And using ‘em means supporting the political decisions of whatever administration’s in power. Oh well, with new invasion plans being bandied about on the campaign circuit I’m sure they’ll find a use for all the new ground pounders.

Preferably you would do so with detailed explanation, historical refernces and perhaps, dare I say it, discernable logic. You are far too often conclusory in your statements. You also avoid very salient points from your opponents and you either hide from a challenge or pick out one part of what you percieve is the weakest part of the other’s argument all the while ignoring the whole of the argument that shows you to be an utter buffoon.
The problem you have with me is that we are a lot more alike than you are comfortable with. Thus the protestations.

David Warren says it all:
It is a little known fact — at least, to the Western media — that the vast majority of Iraqis cannot possibly want to live under the murderous tyranny of a relatively small number of Islamist psychopaths, of foreign inspiration, and will do everything except master the art of self-government to avoid it. What has changed, over the past few years, would seem to be the popular attitude towards the future, in Iraq. It contains more fear, and is therefore easier to harness towards such specific ends as finding Islamist terrorists and annihilating them.
And that’s why we are going to win.

Have you ever actually watched a soccer game or has somebody just fed you all this garbage? Most of the time half the players are standing around picking their noses since there’s nothing going on out on that big old field.
BTW, I picked up a soccer ball in the garage and it was no harder to dribble than the basketball it lives with out there. It’s a little too small to shoot accurately with it and backspin doesn’t seem to help it through the hoop. Maybe that’s why nobody ever scores until they get to the shootout.

It sounds to me like you don’t understand that what you are saying cuts against the very strategic choices you insist we make.
If you are dumb enough to believe that by invading we risked Al Qaeda taking over Iraq, but the war was still a good idea, you really ought to blow your brains out ‘cause they aren’t doing you any good.
The point of leaving isn’t to give the country over to Al Qaeda. They weren’t there before and they will be gone when we leave. The point simply is that we can’t settle a fight between Sunni and Shia that they will end up with an uncertain, albeit anti-Al Qaeda Government. If you think that Al-Qeada free governemnt is victory, hell, we had that before we went in you moron.
The problem is that we are dying over there to keep the peace between Sunni and Shia. That is not a mission that our guys should be doing. Its not a fight that can be won. It can simply be put off.
