Great toon Mike.
I think that when the gop talks about enforcing illegal immigration or any other laws, the Dems should say fine.
When the gop enforces accountability for this administration, the Dems will be all for it.
Until then, the gop should STFU about the law.

While it is illegal to lie under oath to Congress, this doesn’t include a Democrat controlled Congress, only a Republican controlled Congress, unless the liar is a Republican, in which case that’s ok too.

dubya’s continuing confidence in gonzalez is identical to that embarrassing ordeal with rumsfeld. what an new low for him, he obviously can’t learn from his mistakes. after gonzalez is proven incompetent and shown to be a liar, why hang on to him? my hunch is because the democrats continue to ask for his head, and like a 3rd grader (lil bush?) he HAS to do just the opposite even at his own demise.
well believe it or not the A.G. is not supposed to be a soldier for the president… and this calls into question bush’s motives. i can just hear it…
“Alberto i can fire you now like i should, OR if you do everything i say i will stand behind you and shield you forever”
what is congress doing?????? why isn’t this criminal impeached yet????
anyone that calls themselves an american can’t support this president’s massive power grabs.
just ask yourselves if you’d like hillary clinton to have these exact same overtly unconstitutional powers?

gtengineer said: what an new low for him, he obviously can’t learn from his mistakes. What mistakes? How can he learn from mistakes when he doesn’t even admit they are mistakes? after gonzalez is proven incompetent and shown to be a liar, why hang on to him? One good reason: a confirmation hearing for a successor would be held by a Democrat-majority committee, asking more of those pesky impertinent questions. Plus, an extra-credit answer: Whaddya mean, incompetent? AG is doing exactly what W wants him to. Lying, obfuscating, and refusing to answer simple direct questions. Aside from Ari Fleischer, there aren’t many who could as good a job.

Day after day after day after day after day after day, nothing provocative, nothing groundbreaking, no pioneering, it’s the same old paranoid delusional obsession with Bush and Gonzales, Bush and Cheney, Bush and Miers, blah, blah, blah, blah, that’s YOUR Atlanta Journal Constitution, the rag.
OUR OPINION: Bush asserts a king’s prerogative- Jay Kookman, AJC
After 8 months of non legislating, obstructionist, non stop investigating, all you libs have are false accusations, mindless cartoons and idiot opinion columns, with no evidence whatsoever, oh and a minimum wage hike, whoop dee do.
{{{{{{{The media are doing their best Claude Rains act over the revelation that the office of New York Governor Eliot Spitzer orchestrated a smear campaign against State Senate Majority Leader Joe Bruno. The investigation had been prompted by the Governor’s office after Mr. Spitzer’s communications aide and hatchet man, Darren Dopp, saw to it that allegations of impropriety against Mr. Bruno had found their way into the hands of gullible, pliant reporters. The AG cleared Mr. Bruno of any wrongdoing, but in the process uncovered Mr. Dopp’s unseemly little scheme to plant the story and then use that as a pretext to call for the investigation.}}}}}}}}
The EXACT same things that the libs accuse Republicans of doing, it turns out the Republicans are innocent but the democrats are the ones actually committing the crimes.

well the simple fact is that they’ve been caught. bush’s constitutional showdown simply shows how little he regards justice and how much he favors coverups.
when will he learn that the prosecutors have a job to do regardless of how he feels about it? he can appoint a prosecutor but he can’t call them and forbid republican investigations.
this little man certainly feels that the constitution is simply a ‘suggestion’.
and shame on each of you here defending him… this criminal deserves justice, please don’t continue to call yourself an american!

“It is depressing to realize that a country organized on a religious basis with religious rule of law could and would execute its power for purposes which most countries would find intolerable and loathsome,” Doumar wrote in his ruling. “It is a further tragedy that the laws of the United States, in this instance, provide no remedy for the psychological and emotional losses suffered by the survivors.”

But the agenda (of Congressional oversight) was different during the Clinton administration. The government reform panel alone, for example, issued 1,052 subpoenas related to investigations of the Clinton administration and the Democratic National Committee from 1997 to 2002, and only 11 subpoenas related to allegations of Republican abuse.
The panel received more than 2 million pages of documents and heard from 44 Clinton administration officials, including two White House chiefs of staff, according to statistics culled by Democratic staff on the Government Reform Committee.
The nonpartisan Government Accountability Office has found that from October 1996 to March 1998 — well before the impeachment hearings — the Clinton White House staff had spent more than 55,000 hours responding to more than 300 congressional requests, and had produced hundreds of video and audio tapes, along with hundreds of thousands of pages of documents, to congressional investigators.

The Repukes have painted themselves into a corner with Bush and Iraq. While they held both houses of Congress they let Bush do anything they want. Now they defend him only because do to otherwise would allow all the malfeasances that occurred prior to 2006 (when the Democrats took over and actually exercised some oversight) to bubble to the surface. They currently defend the insanity of “stay the course, forever, or at least until I’m out of office in 2009” strategery in Iraq but it is to their own detriment. The longer they blindly support this president, the longer it will be before the American people, particularly the crucial independent middle of the road voters, will place any trust in the Repbulican party. Once Bush is out of office THEN the floodgates of scandal and affronts to our constitution will REALLY be revealed. Gonzalez is just a symptom of what is the cancer of the Bush/Cheney mis-administration.

getalife: How many times does “IN THE NEWS” have to tell you, Andy got banned for jacking his name and posting NON pornographic homosexual websites with it, I guess because the people at the AJC must be closet homophobes and find gay men objectionable.
And as I remember he did it in retaliation for the libs who were jacking his name first and posting racist Ku Klux Klan Robert Byrd trash with it, which apparently is no problem with the AJC, race baiting and race haters are all welcome here.
Point being, if it was Andy jacking your name, they would have banned him by now.
No, it must be some lib doing it, they can post vulgarity, threaten people’s families using the blog, sexually harass other bloggers using the most vile, disgusting language imaginable, gay bash, and jack names with impunity, these things are perfectly acceptable at the Atlanta Journal Constitution, unless of course, a Con does it.

As no one has responded, the situation was remarkably similar to the Libby situation (much ado about nothing?). The specific articles were “alleging that the President had provided perjurious, false and misleading testimony to the grand jury regarding the Paula Jones case and his relationship with Monica Lewinsky and that he had obstructed justice through an effort to delay, impede, cover up and conceal the existence of evidence related to the Jones case.”
So again, we have lying under oath and obstruction of justice. You’d think both parties would finally be aware of the difficulties that ensue from appointing “special prosecutors.”
A fuller treatment of the background is at the Eagleton Institute of Politics at Rutgers University:

I would hope that after the events of the past few years the next President, Democrat or Republican, would not want to take the same actions. But it seems that whoever’s in office, if the Congress is held by the opposing party we’ll have more of the same - not matter how much the President cooperates (there will still be Executive Privilege issues). Congressional oversight is crucial. But like anything it can be carried to extremes. The desire to score political points will trump legislative action to benefit the people, for some.
Hillary strikes me as more of an iron fist sort than Bush - George Stephanopoulos has written extensively about her temper and intimidation of dissenting views.
For example, I saw Sen Majority Leader Reid last night (on tv, for the literalists reading this) at the min wage bill conference - he said they’d held 500 hearings and would hold 500 more before they could prepare to bring the troops home. I replayed it to make sure I heard correctly. No wonder Sheehan’s upset.

My response to your 6:14 question hadn’t even posted when your 6:36 came up. I’m not quite tracking where this is coming from.
I’m concerned if Hillary wins and there’s a Rep Congress we’ll see more of the same - much more. She engenders a visceral response from many conservatives - more than Bill does (the guy has charm, gotta give him that). About the only good that comes out of this is that the Executive Privilege concept gets refined further by the courts.
I’d like to see some real restrictions on the use of special prosecutors. Let Congress do their job and not outsource their responsibility.
