I agree with Mrs. G and @@. I’ve watched my kids grow up playing different sports, but now it’s only soccer they enjoy.
But I used to love it when my kids were little playing sports. They would occassionally take a break out on the field and start playing with bugs, once my son found a frog out on the field and ran over to me during the game to show me (I had to remind him the game was still going on). It was great.

Unfortuantely the only reason I watch baseball is if I’m having problems sleeping. No disrespect, but baseball has to be one of the most boring things ever to watch, (besides watching grass grow). I mean, come on people!! Who wants to watch a no -hitter? It’s a game where NO ONE HITS THE BALL!!! That’s fun?!?!? I’m watching a game, forcing myself to stay awake and no one hits the ball?!?
What’s next? A game where no one can FIND the ball? They look all night but it can’t be found and that’s considered a great game?!?
Announcer: Yes people history is being made again tonight, no one on either team has found the ball!! What excitement!! What thrills and chills!! What a game, WHat …A…Game!!!

Tom, I know. Many fans have given up on our national pastime and I would never argue against their choice. Perhaps they are smarter than I.
And there is no doubt that the game has been somewhat perverted over the past thirty years - the DH, ‘roids, strikes/walkouts, umps screwing with the strike zone and ungodly amounts of money.
But as a lifelong fan who grow up watching Mickey Mantle, Whitey Ford et al, I have this hope (naivety?) that the game has only temporarily been hijacked by these prima donnas and insane money grabbers.
Ah, it’s good to have a (pipe) dream!
Bosch, I very much respect your opinions and enjoy your writing, and I guess I’m a fundamentalist evangelical about it. But for me, baseball is the only true religion. The others are all false religions!

Baseball is exciting. It’s the announcers who put you to sleep.
The problem baseball cant solve are the umpire’s opinion of where the strike zone is located. They seem to think that if the pitch SHOULD have fooled the batter into swinging, then it’s a strike.
In other words, it’s not where you throw the ball, it’s how you throw it.

AmVet, I never mean to disrespect someone’s religion! I am truly, truly sorry. I remember watching the game, the actual game, when Hank Aaron broke that record. The last time I was in Atlanta was for the Hunger Walk, and I walked down to that section of the back fence they have up, told my kids the story, and we all stared for a while in a little meditative salute to the man.
I used to love baseball when I was a kid, but it has gotten out of hand [just like with other professional sports-soccer included].
I could be wrong, but I have never heard of a professional soccer/football team going out on strike, the fans would revolt and kill all the players and owners! You don’t mess with soccer fans, man! They are serious!

I watched the You-Tube debates last night.
I’m prepared to elect Barack Obama for Senior Class President. For all of his idealism, for all of his lofty dreams…other world leaders who lack both would clean that guy’s clock.
If I was considering voting Democrat, which I’m not. Joe Biden would be my choice. At one time I thought Richardson was worth a looksee but dang, he’s begun to pander and he doesn’t seem to be all that bright which surprised me with all of his experience in foreign relations.
Maybe he’s a doer that can’t put his experience into clever soundbites.
The frontrunners keep talking about change, change, change. Enough already, that one has been overdone and is now stale.
Gravel, as nutty as he is, has nailed it. “There’s not going to be any change in how Washington operates.”
It was interesting to me that only 3,000 questions were submitted when You-Tube has millions of participants. The 3,000 total were submitted from around the world. Of that 3,000 only 35 were worthy enough to make it on air.
Some guy talked with a roomful of Democrats who had watched the debates. Everyone in there said that Obama “seemed” honest, “seemed” to care, “seemed” to offer change. Those voters “seemingly” don’t require substance from Obama.
Kinda leaves you scratching your head about poll numbers. Who the heck are these people they question, and just how serious and informed are they about politics?

Not a sports comment (I tend towards nonprofessional viewing) - comment on the debate last night.
I thought of you when Darfur came up - Sen Biden was asked about unilateral military action, which he supports, when asked why, how it’s different than other situations, his response was an honest, unequivocal “because we can.” Power projection at its purest.
I’ll give Anderson Cooper credit for followups. Hillary did not want to answer about committing US ground forces. He asked her, I think three times, before he got a straight answer. Watching that exchange was more painful than watching… golf?

To All Baseball Fans: Sorry. I can’t help it, baseball is boring. Baseball is the only game where you have a 7th innning stretch. Why? Because they have to wake up all the fans!!! They were sleeping so they give them some time to wake up and stretch!! They even have some of the PLAYERS on camera sleeping during the games!!!
Come on!!! Baseball is BORING. Gymnastics would be boring if not for the little men wearing those tight pants. Golf is boring, not as boring as baseball, (mainly because the fans can’t fall asleep standing up), but still boring. NASCAR my god NASCAR!! I don’t get it!!! It’s not even a sport, it’s DRIVING!!! They drive around in a circle, sometimes for 200 laps — TWO HUNDRED LAPS, round and round in a circle, and people consider that fun?!? The only good thing about NASCAR is all the beer.
Soccer, Ice Hockey, Basketball, Tennis, Football, and yes, even SYNCHRONIZED SWIMMING is better than baseball. Ironing is better than baseball. Eating liver is better than baseball. 12th grade PHYSICS is better than baseball. NASCAR is better than baseball, at least you have beer and can cookout and you can’t fall asleep because of all the car noise.
Baseball fans, God bless you, you are the most loyal people in the world. Single handedly keeping the most boring sport EVER alive. You people need medals for your sacrifice.

Paul, Hey Paul, thanks! I didn’t see the debates last night.
Well, I disagree with Senator Biden. I don’t think it’s the US’ responsibility, I think it is the world’s responsibility (UN). But, you have to give it Biden for being honest, even if his honesty is hypocritical. I think situations like Darfur are very similar to conflicts like Somalia, Yugoslavia, etc. They are in the national interest, and I think they can be accomplished, but as a war-hating liberal, I’ve never, never think it is appropriate for one country to go in and try to solve another countries problems.

You are so right about that guy that was released. I didn’t know that the ACLU and a panel of liberals made the decisions as to who should be released from Guantanamo. I guess I just assumed that the military actually made the call as to who would go and who wouldn’t. Thanks for keeping all of us up to date and informed.
Frankly I think that the Government should lock up everybody that the President suspects is undermining our mission i.e., bloggers, media types, politicians, judges, people in uniform who make disparaging comments, etc… and shopuld throw away the key. We also should allow the Government to do what it needs to to root out these people without regard to any privacy rights that the ACLU may claim we have. I would, however, insist that executive priviledge be enforced strickly. If somebody needs their privacy it is Our Dear Leader.

Going back to the Darfur thing for a minute, and then I must go out for a bit, I think there is a lot of things we as a country can do to HELP the situation, we have so many resources, I like anyone else, hate to see genocide occuring, but again, if military action is needed, I think it is the responsibility of the UN to take action.
The UN has become too dependent upon nations like us, just marching in and taking over, which makes them seem weak and useless. I think a lot of changes need to be made in the UN as well.
Consistency, consistency, that is the true mark of success.

Unfortunately, I was able to see only the first hour. The YouTube questions were, by and large, better than many presented by professional journalists.
I believe I may have misunderstood your earlier position. Biden did say he wanted unilateral US action (air cap, 2500 groundpounders) as the UN was ineffectual. That is a good assessment. The UN is ineffectual in situations like this - and much of the obstructionism comes from African/Muslim power blocks. He sees it as straight humanitarianism with little downside for us.
I don’t see the national interest - in Darfur or in the former Yugoslavia (I know, NATO op - but we pushed it). The whole theme I’ve addressed is “when should the US intervene militarily (if it’s humanitarian, but military is involved, it’s still military intervention)? Strategic interests at stake? No strategic interests, but humanitarian? If humanitarian, how grave before intervention? What casualties are we willing to accept? (Hence my “intervention by casualty count” comment). Human suffering does not equal US national interest. I give Biden credit for acknowledging that. Possibly we should have a military force organized for humanitarism/nation building if we’re going to stay in the humanitarian intervention. Protestations of others to the contrary, Iraq showed the military is not exactly equipped for nationbuilding (boots on the ground to keep a lid on strife does not equal ability to build political infrastructure).
That’s why I’m such an advocate for some pretty extreme (to some) measures regarding environment/petroleum. If not for oil, we wouldn’t give two cents for what Muslim countries did to one another. We’d still be a target (jihadism is not about oil).

All this badmouthing of my beloved game!
Yes, many people find baseball boring. And now that I think about it, as someone who would almost certainly have been diagnosed with ADD back as a child, it is odd that I find the ebb and flow, the sometimes very slow pace of the game very soothing.
But for me there is some comfort in the fact that unlike our ultra fast paced society where the clock is god, baseball is the antithesis of that.
And yes, I know that many people could give a rats behind about great pitching.
Mrs. G and DDR, you’re both way cool, and that 10:17 was, I must begrudgingly admit, very funny, BUT…don’t make me come over there and make you watch a pitching dominated doubleheader! And the same goes for the rest of you cretins!

Bosch, Actually it is two people, the pitcher and the one deciding what pitch to throw, the catcher.
If ‘action’ is what determines a sport, then golf (the action of the club and ball), bowling (pin action), and I guess you could include dog fighting as a sport. While I have never witnessed a staged dog fight (only the ones where two neighborhood dogs get loose and go at it) I suspect there is plenty of ‘action’ and “rowdiness” in a dog fight.
DDR, Your NASCAR comments show just how little you know about the sport. If it is just ‘driving’ you should give it a try. Try setting in a chair, with the temperature around 150 degrees, moving only your feet and hands, and avoiding obstacles while you’re just ‘driving’. Oh and do it for 2-3-4 hours without taking a break. They also sell beer at baseball games so I guess that makes baseball a ‘good thing’? Ever watch a hockey game end with the score of 0-1, was that boring and not a sport?
Seems that ‘beer and booze’ are the key factors for little miss DDR.

I may not be crazy about sports, but I’m crazy about a sports fan!
I had more fun though, when my daughters and I tailgated at the opera last year! Sequins and cold lobster. Mr. G sooo missed out on that!

The connection is quite clear. When DDR and others talk about a sport that they clearly have no knowledge of and then, as Bosch does (10:29), make fun of the people that do enjoy that sport you show a large character flaw. Now, when this same group of people spout off about politics with about as much understanding and knowledge as they have shown about sports, and then these same people call those with a different point of view names (liars, crooks, criminals, ignorant) just because they don’t agree with your point of view.
The correlation is definitely there.

And that scene in Philadelphia where Tom Hanks is listening to and describing some amazing aria (I don’t know the piece) is one of the most compelling pieces of film I have ever seen.

I love to watch the Braves play baseball. Lotsa fun ‘specially when Willie Harris makes six hits in one game.

Opera has never had much appeal for me. But oh, that classical Spanish guitar is wonderful. You Tube has come up with some great guitarists. Segovia got me going with this long ago.
One of my favorite selections right now is the semi-classical introduction to the Maria Pales firedance on the original Riverdance. That is a lovely soothing piece that I can listen to many times and that followed by the great talent of Pales. Flamenco is great but the Spanish guitar is even better.

While I appreciate the “cute” I disagree that somehow “Right Wing” can be disconnected from “Nut Job”. You don’t get one without the other.
It is amazing to me that my posts, which are simply stating current Right Wing theology, are met with such resistance. All I have ever done is be a “ditto head” for you are the rest of my Right Wing Nut Job friends here.
Post after post I merely repeat or restate what all of us Wingers believe. Now I would agree that I don’t spin it and I don’t try to avoid the logical conclusions that derive from the facts.
For example it wasn’t too long ago that I pointed out that we were going to have to give the Iraqi’s substantial weaponry in order to protect them from its neighbors after victory is had and we leave. I mean it seems to me that they wuld have to have far more advanced technology than before. Fighter planes, surface to air missiles, an up to date and modern radar system so that they can reliably shoot down enemy planes, a Patriot Missle battery to shoot down incoming missles etc… If we don’t do this they will just be sitting ducks. Now it may be that the Iraqi’s end up with a well-armed governemnt we don’t like and we’ll have to go back against a much better force than we took out before, but hey, “we broke, we own it” right. This line of thinking was either resented or ignored by my winger friends. Why I don’t know. I mean we knew when we did this that ultimately we would have to prepare a country to defend itself in a very hostile region. While this seems obvious and in no way undermines why we engaged in this most glorious mission, bringing it up hasn’t been welcomed. I think its because somehow you think it makes us look stupid. Hey, you are a winger…own it.

Dusty, To answer your question, we didn’t go into WWII unilaterally, and before you give me some BS answer about the “coalition” don’t bother. We are in Iraq alone. The one or two troops that some countries have sent is just ridiculous.
In my opinion, war should always be the absolute last option, and NEVER followed by unilateral action.
Why do people like you always compare apples to oranges? WWII? Iraq?
Paul, Back to Darfur. Well, to some degree I think your are right, human suffering does not equal national interest. But as I said, I think when genocide is in play, it is a moral obligation of the world community to do something. There is also the bigger picture of WHY the genocide is happening in the first place. That is usually about control, power, money, and greed.
But, on the other hand, when is it a government’s responsibility to take on moral issues? IMHO, never. One clip I did see of the debate last night were the two lesbians who asked about gay marriage. I would have loved for one candidate to stand up and say, “Well, to be honest, gay marriage isn’t a governmental issue, that’s an issue between you, your God, and your church.” Why should the government get involved when churches can’t even agree. HELLO PEOPLE, there is a thing called seperation of church and state! Which I truly believe. I think that the government trying to intervene in gay marriage is absurd - trying to actually AMEND our CONSTITUTION to ban gay marriage is completely insane.
So, yes, military action for humanitarian reasons are a tough call, that’s why I think it is the UN’s problem, and like I said earlier, I don’t think the UN is all that great, but that’s why they were created, and if properly utilized, could take all the heat off of us trying to save the world a bit, and onto the shoulders of everyone.

Bosch: I’m apt to agree with Paul. Darfur’s problems should not involve the world. Whenever any other country tires to get involved in another’s business, (VietNam, Somalia, Bosnia), the more powerful country is greeted at first as a hero, but after a couple of months the heroes turn into zeroes; mostly because of a lack of knowledge for the customs of the country they are in. But predominantly because the helpee will start to feel like the helper is trying to rule or tke over their country and resentment starts setting in.
When the US troops imposed strict curfews in Somalia, (to curb looting and random violence by warlords), the local populace took that as the US trying to govern their lives — completely ignoring the fact that it was for their own safety.
On the flip side of that, US troops started FORGETTING who were the bad guys and who were the good guy populace. They started treating everyone as a “suspect”. Of course, you know what happened afterwards.
Sometimes it’s best NOT to intercede. Cuba always come to mind when I think of intervening in another country’s politics. Even though the press, the US, the war department, Cuban dissidents, etc.; paint Castro as a violent dictator, however its the CUBAN CITIZENS that are the ones keeping Castro in power. The people of Cuba outnumber the military 3 to 1; if they wanted to overthrow Castro, they would’ve done it by now. Instead, they treat him as an honored and revered uncle who commands respect and admiration.
Castro will never fall, because the people of Cuba keep him in power.

I really don’t even like to compare Iraq to Darfur, because it is completely two seperate things. With Iraq, we went in, at first, I think, I’ve lost track, because of WMD….then it was the big bad dictator…..now he’s gone…..now, we are there because we are fighting the terrorist there……now we can’t leave because there will be mass slaughter…..and as I said the other day, NOW the UN doesn’t want to go in because we have completely alienated every country in the world against helping us, and why should they send in soldiers to be slaughtered to fix a mess we started. We lied to them, or rather manipulated data to fit our needs, and then we dismissed their warnings saying that the UN didn’t have the authority to intervene, etc. etc.
And while I’m not trying to say the the situation in Darfur is so simple, it’s just straight forth genocide and we need to stop it, nothing is ever that simple, what I am saying is that if military action is needed to stop genocide, it should NEVER be ONE country to take on that responsibility.
Like I said earlier, and so many times, that is the UN’s job. And while I think the UN has lost some of it’s power, because as I said earlier, we are real quick to march in and take control, that should really change, IMHO.

Raisedanidiot, It’s okay to be a war-hating liberal. I’m ignoring Dusty for the rest of the day, it’s just more healthy for me that way.
I really think that a lot of liberals are kind of hypocritical about war though, they see nothing wrong with rushing into battle for humanitarian reasons, to save the poor from genocide, because it’s the moral thing to do, when really, IMHO, governments should rarely intervene is issues of morality, and stick to the basics of what it is set up to do.
In the tragic cases of genocide, then I really do think it is the responsibility on a global scale to try and put a stop to it, hopefully, through diplomatic means or sanctions if necessary, but if that doesn’t work, then yes, militarily, but again never unilaterally.

Raisedanidiot, Like I told Paul earlier, the only question I saw on the debate last night were the two lesbians who asked the candidates if they would “allow us to marry…..each other” I thought that was really funny.
Kuchic(something - I dont’ know how to spell his name) came the close to how I feel about that.

It says WE the PEOPLE, not straight, gay, man, or woman, but “people.” And after that sets up the basic responsibilities of the government.
I think it’s a really great document and to the ultra-right evangelicals who are trying to spoil it by making a freaking AMENDMENT to it, telling us who and who can not get married, is truly disturbing.
Those of us who are truly interested in preserving the Constitution should really be afraid of that.

Bush is now desperately selling the continuation of war in Iraq by pointing out how incompetent his Administration has been in dealing with Al Qaeda ‘Central.’
President George W. Bush argued forcefully today that an Al Qaeda-affiliated group in Iraq is linked tightly to the central Al Qaeda leadership, and that for American forces to leave Iraq without defeating the terror group would be “dangerous for the world and disastrous for America.”
So, 6 YEARS AFTER 9/11, Osama Bin Laden is powerful enough and operationally capable of killing our soliders AND undermining our efforts in Iraq (where he had no influence or operational capability prior to Bush’s invasion).

Yes, it is absolutely true that without the French and their own particular struggles with the Brits we would not have won the American Revolution.
However, and I know this has been stated millions of times, if not for the contribution of thousands of Americans, many of whom lie beneath rows and rows of crosses in Normandy, you would be speaking German.
Of course none of this has a thing to do with the Oil for Food program, where Frenchmen were beneficiaries of bribes from Saddam, and thus uncooperative in our efforts to depose him.
Luckily for us, Monsieur Sarkozy was just elected and, unlike his predecessors, he is not predisposed to look down his Gallic nose at us as if we were unenlightened peasants (like the so-called “elites” in this country).
I’d be curious as to whether or not “France” celebrates or mourns this changing of the guard.
