The Catholic Church paid 660 million in sex settlements. Actually their insurance company did.

Did you know that the catholic church has sex abuse insurance? I wonder how long the “good hands people” argued it was an act of god?

I wonder what the deductible is: “innappropriately long hugs”, or “Acting out any scene from the movie Hairspray”?

And if any abuse occured in the confessional abuse, would it count?

And if the church had let the premiums lapse, would there still be a grace period?

Religion seems to attract perverts, all religions. I guess its the power of the position, allowing certain liberties that other people could not get away with. If catholic priests faced the same aggressive investigations that say muslim inmans face, I suspect the child molestation would end. What should be the punishment for organized religion for covering us these crimes for Centuries? I suggest full taxation of all churches, the same as for any other business. Make them pay property taxes, federal and state income taxes, sales taxes, and medicare and social security taxes. It is only just punishment, think of all the children the church has betrayed over the hundreds of years. Oh yeah, and end the tax deductability of contributions to religion, churches, and missionaries.

“Cardinal Roger Mahony, leader of the nation’s largest Roman Catholic archdiocese, apologized Sunday
to the hundreds of people who will get a share of a $660 million settlement over allegations of clergy sex abuse.

The deal settles all 508 cases that remained against the archdiocese, which also paid $60 million in December
to settle 45 cases that weren’t covered by sexual abuse insurance.

Sexual abuse insurance? Why did the Catholics purchase sexual abuse insurance? I don’t have any of that because I don’t plan to sexually abuse anyone - but they bought some?

The Los Angeles archdiocese have paid more than $114 million to settle 86 claims so far. Several religious orders in California have also reached multimillion-dollar settlements in recent months.

Why apologize for something you intend to do again and again? In 2010, Mahoney will express more shock and outrage when he writes more checks. The truth is, if they expelled every priest with a sex crimes in their past they’d have to close up.

That’s why they can’t take the “One strike and you’re out” pledge - they can’t afford to.”

“Cardinal Mahoney announced that to help pay for the deal, the church would sell a building it owns on Wilshire
and about 50 other properties they weren’t using, which reminded me, oh yeah, the Catholic Church owns more
property out here than Bob Hope did because it’s a business — and not just a business, really, the greatest
business in the world, in that, like all religions, it’s selling an invisible product.

The total payouts for abuse cases in dioceses all over America is now over $2 billion, and I imagine much of it
came from people who went to Church and bought the invisible product by dropping their hard earned money
into the basket. I wonder what those people think when they see that their money got spent on buying the
privilege of touching and f*** kids.”

I like how the Pope stated last week that only the Catholic church has the real Christians and all other denominations are inferior. And I wonder if any other Christians see any irony in the Catholic church having to pay out BILLIONS of $$$ for abusing children during the past 30 or so years.

I see the irony, and I think it’s pretty hilarious!

I think one of the major problems with the Catholic Church and Christianity in general is the suppression of sex and women. Sex is human nature and many religions make it something bad (which, IMHO, has a lot to do with St. Paul). Episcopal priests are allowed to marry, just like anyone else, and while there are cases of sexual abuse in the Episcopal Church, they are far less.

I think that is a problem in our society in general, and probably one of the reasons we have a high percentage of sexual abuse in the general population. We have an extreme Puritanical view of sex, people don’t like to talk about sex, they view the human body as obscene, etc.

So, IMHO, until our society stops seeing sex as something evil, talk about it openly with children (and not use all the goofy slang words because you are too embarrassed to say “penis” or “vagina”) we will continue to have problems like this.

Goldie, Pretty much everybody in Germany during that time was a member of the Nazi party (even if they weren’t). But no, he may have gone through the Nazi HItler Youth Program, at the time is was a legal requirement, but he was a “quiet” critic of the Nazi party. Obviously you had to be pretty “quiet” about your criticisms back then in Deutschland during that time - know what I mean?

His dad was a critic of the Nazi Party as well. But, to make this long story short, everyone had to go through the Hitler Youth Program, and he was drafted into the German army, but there is no indication that he was indoctrinated with the Nazi ideologue.

Some things the libs are “outraged” about, some things they aren’t:

According to a draft report commissioned by the U.S. Department of Education, in compliance with the 2002 “No Child Left Behind” act signed into law by President Bush, between 6 percent and 10 percent of public school children across the country have been sexually abused or harassed by school employees and teachers. Anti-Con, I think it’s all how you look at church in general. I was a big “church is stupid” kind of person until I met the other Bosch. I’m not a big proponent of organized religion, I can find “God” anywhere, but I’m very happy with my church. I think it is all how you make it applicable to your life. There are lots of things about Christianity that I have problems with, and things that I simply just do not believe, but I like my church because of the social programs we host (soup kitchen, giving clothes and coats to shelters, etc.) and the community of the members. I know that I could call most anyone in my church at anytime for help, and they’d be there in a second.

It is an outlet for my family to actually “do” things for the community together as a family instead of just talking about it. It is also a source of showing my children the realities of life, my kids work in the soup kitchen in the summer, and help the older parrisioners if they need help with yard work, moving something, etc.

There are a lot of people in my church who are extremely conservative politically, but we just don’t talk about it — I don’t even know what many of the members of my church do for a living.

But, I can apply much of what is “preached on” to my life, sort of translate it into Boschisms, if that makes sense. I also like the free bread and wine every Sunday!

But anyway, no, I do not like churches that preach a “right” and a “wrong,” that just isn’t for me, but there are some churches out there believe it or not that don’t do that.

Yes, Goldie, it is amazing to me how people can call themselves “Christian” and then complain about “them Mexicans” or turn up their noses at homeless people instead of viewing them simply as a human being. You may have “issues” with their circumstances, but they are still humans beings with needs and feelings.

I have to call Mother Bosch out all the time about things like that. She’ll complain about the “Mexicans” at the Wal-Mart, and I’ll ask her, “well, don’t you think these people need toothpaste too? I mean do you really want these people running around illegally AND with bad breath?” That just burns her up, and she’ll get all flustered.

I am also appalled at those like Vitter and Newt who scream for family values and deem themselves the moral police and then are caught in escapades like we’ve seen.

To me, the ones who are screaming for moral values are the ones you usually have to look out for (to quote an old middle school saying of mine, “first smeller is the feller!”)

And Goldie, Another thing regarding something from the other day, about the death penalty.

I hate to be almost “preaching” all this “Christian” stuff and not comment on this.

I really hate it that I feel the way I do, I do believe in the death penalty. I appreciate all human life, but those who totally disregard it, to me, don’t deserve that precious right to live. It is also very troubling to me that many death penalty opponents forget the victims’ families - who NEVER recover - I’ve seen that first-hand - the trauma and complete destruction of the families.

We all shape our opinions and beliefs on experiences we’ve had, and as you know, loosing a friend to murder can be really traumatic. The circumstances with both of my friends deaths was just so horrible, beyond words horrible, it’s hard not to feel bitter.

But, as far as that case from the other day, I’m glad to see he got clemency so that the new evidence can be heard and weighed. I, too, would really hate to see an innocent man executed.

Understanding the church and it’s teachings is a lifetime endeavor ml. I don’t know of anybody who has graduated and returned to show their diploma.

A couple of things have stuck with me.

Among them “Don’t ask for justice, because you might get it.” The other is a story about a wise and just king who ruled over a nation of wicked people. His responsibility was to discourage their wickedness, the king decided that anyone breaking the law would have his eyes put out. A young man was apprehended for violating the law, and when he was brought before the King, the ruler was dismayed to discover that the lawbreaker was his own son. What could he do? If he were merely a just king, he would have his eyes removed. If he were merely a loving father, he would overlook the crime and let his son go free. But he was both a just king and a loving father. So he said, “You have broken the law, and the punishment is the loss of two eyes. That is what it shall be, one of yours and one of mine.” Now as the story goes, from that day on, the appearance of both the King and his son reminded the people of the king’s justice and love.

I came to a different conclusion. We’re in it together and the sin is shared by all.

Kinda like the song says…”Stuck in the middle with you…”

I don’t get onto my kids about “language” so much as long as they use it appropriately, you know, not around old people or their teachers, and my middle son last night said (regarding our cats (we have three) who were literally (no pun intended) lined up at the litter box, he said, “Man, the cats are having a sh!tfest in there!” Appropriate? Duh is right. Only the Democrats pushed for the Catholic Church to be held accountable. I think the plaintiff’s were funded by the DNC weren’t they? However, Democrats “push” for preversion. Haven’t you seen that? I think its in the Party Platform that “perversion is good unless committed by Church people then its about the children.” This IS hypocrisy.

One might ask whether it is hypocritical to try to overturn the will of the people by impeaching a President for lying while championing the cause of a Republican caught for the same offense or whether it is hypocritical for pro-family candidates to pay for sex.

Those people who ask such questions should shut up and let me live in a world where I control the facts to suit my preconceived notion of the world. Right is Good! Left is evil! That is all I need to know. That is all I need to know! I already have the damn answer. I just said it. Don’t try to use facts to change my mind. I am right. You are wrong. That’s it. End of discussion. I will not let facts or events alter my belief that we are always right and you are always wrong. We are always good. You are always evil.

That is why we are the only people who can truly unite the country. (Once we kill the people who disagree with me, that is.)

It is true that the Nazis committed genocide by killing Jews and others. I agree because being Jewish isn’t something you can control. Being a liberal is different. You are choosing to be treasonous, perverts. Therefore rounding all of you up and killing you, while similar to the Nazis, is really entirely different. If you don’t think we’d do it if we could get away with it you are smoking too much lib weed.

Oops! I just read your 9:24 Bosch about anatomically correct words. Here’s a little something that you might enjoy.

I’m one of those parents who taught my daughter the specifics regarding sex. Never withheld anything. Used the anatomically correct words. Our discussions began when she started asking questions at a very young age. I covered it all from the psychological, emotional and physical aspects. Consequences were included as well. I wanted her to know that they were an inescapable reality. Wishful thinking would only land her in a predicament she wouldn’t be able to escape because her father and I are parents who believe that consequences are critical to learning.

My daughter is now 22. Recently she was telling me about a gathering of herself and her friends, mostly guys. The conversation went to anatomy. The guys were asking the girls, what do you call “it”?

Every one of the girls had a name for “it”, but “it” wasn’t vagina. I can’t remember what the other girls had named theirs, but my daughter calls hers “Suzie”. Why would she do that if I had taught her the correct name?

The guys found all the names given by each girl to be cute and adorable.

Why do you think that is Bosch? Is it because there are some guys who still enjoy a little “modesty” in women.

I know it was what attracted my husband to me; that and my innocence. It may not be what all men are looking for, but that’s where the shame comes in.

Ain’t it a shame that modesty and innocence is no longer seen as a “valuable asset”?

A “Lucy” goosey is all the rage, and what our society encourages. Doesn’t speak well for humanity now does it?

We discourage “self respect” and encourage the freedom to “disrespect”.

If it had been my child I would have taken him to a Priest and explained that my son has a problem with seducing members of the cloth. I would have then turned him over to the Priest for some intensive, one-on-one, counseling. Then I would have encouraged the Priests who were victimized by my son to either seek legal remedies or give the victims an opportunity to punish him privately.

The important thing is to remember that because the Church is good that no bad can come from it. It is the same thing with the GOP. It is inherently good. No evil can come from it, ever. The inverse is true of Democrats. They are evil through and through. They can do no good, ever.

If you simplify the world like this it is so easy to move through life because you know the answer before the question is asked.

@@, I enjoy modesty not only in women, but men also, I enjoy DECENCY in everybody. Innocence? That’s a matter of opinion, and a person’s own experiences and belief system. What is “innocent” to me isn’t so “innocent” to another.

IMNO, it’s hard to judge modesty and innocence, but you can judge just good old common sense and decency.

Like I said earlier, I think many of the sexual malfeasances we have in our society today is due to the absolutely Puritanical views we have on sex. Sex is seen as something bad and dirty instead of just plain old human nature. No, I do not like promiscuity and I certainly would not let my daughter run around in some of the outfits I see other “tweens” wear, but I think that until we get over our fear of sex in general and view it as a part of nature, we are still going to have these problems.

I think that the environment of some churches just breeds these types of malfeasances. Catholic priests? Well, IMHO, it’s just not NATURAL for adults to not have sex based on something said in a book (the Bible). Humans have urges and it’s instinctual, and if you go against your instinct, well, that’s just not how our bodies are made.

I’m not bashing on Baptists here either, it’s just the denomination I grew up in. They suppress sex (and women) as well, sex is something evil and dirty to them (at least at Mother Bosch’s church). Scary place. Again, it just isn’t natural - it’s not how our bodies were designed.

{{I really hate it that I feel the way I do, I do believe in the death penalty.}}

Totally understood, Bosch! Back when Tim McVeigh was being sentenced to death, I anguished for a few minutes about that. But then realized that if there was ever a reason to condone the death penalty, it would be for terrorists such as him or Eric Rudolph, who purposefully killed many innocent people to fulfill his own jihad. Just like I think we should quickly kill Bin Laden when we find him… sadly, that will only occur when we get a Dem president back in the White House!

Raisedanidiot, Hello! Yes, you are right, you said it much more simplier than I did, “suppression begets perversion.” Your body is going to find a way to do what it instinctually wants to do, by any means necessary — it’s just how the human body is programmed.

Buy Danish, Good Afternoon

You do bring up an excellent point.

First, allowing Catholic clergy to marry will bring in a much larger number of young men into the clergy. I have two brothers who would be thrilled to have the opportunity to be priests. Their wives would be highly supportive.

I agree with raisedanidiot that sexual repression is a large part of the problem.

I would go a step further and suggest the ordination of women as well.

Marriage may cure some of men’s “instincts” but I like you do not think that pedophelia would be one of them. The love, comfort and intimacy one should find in their marriage could certainly do no harm.

The problem is with both the men themselves and the Church’s continued ban of married clergy. As well, as the Church’s really poor record of dealing with the offenders.

There is plenty of responsibility to go around.

Hi Bosch! Did you see my post yesterday? I got to see my kids this past week…I feel about a 1000 pds lighter. I too wrestled with the capital punishment thingie for a long time. It would be much harder to process after being traumatized I’m sure. I believe that there are certainly those that deserve death…but the real question is who’s place is it to bring about justification through death…ours? the government? god? I just can’t answer that…what I do know is that life is a cycle of cause and effect…just as suppression begets perversion…violence begets violence…revenge begets revenge…that negative energy never leaves, it just cycles around. Call me an idealist, but I don’t see any real justification in violence…ever.

Good to be back;)

By From a lawyer who has handled many death penalty cases

July 18, 2007 12:49 PM | Link to this

The problem with the Death Penalty isn’t that there are some who deserve it. There certainly are. The problem arises when men set up guidelines for who gets it and then those guidelines ensnare people who don’t fit the mold of the extreme cases cited. For example, in some states if you shoot a person in the street: no death penalty. You shoot a person in a car: death penalty. You shoot a person for fun: no death penalty. You shoot a person for his money: death penalty.

Further, most people charged with capital murder have terrible, pathetic attorneys that you wouldn’t hire to handle a speeding ticket. This leads to haphazard results that are not at all consistent with the quality of the offense or the charecter of the accused. In other words if you were given a set of cases you couldn’t reliably pick out the ones where the death penalty was imposed.

In addition, different areas have different patterns with respect to the death penalty. Most people speak of the differnces between black and white defendants and black and white victims. However, the real disparity comes into play when you look at the community where the offense occured. In very white communities, the death penalty is rare. In very black communities the death penalty is rare. However, if you look at areas where the minority population is near 40%, the death penalty is common. Why? The white people are afraid and the death penalty seems to be the answer.

Another problem with the death penalty is this. My experience is that the more serious the offense the more likely the person is innocent. In other words, almost all people charged with stealing are guilty. When it comes to more serious offense like child molestation, murder, rape, etc… the chances that the person charged didn’t do it goes up dramatically. The are many reasons for this including te pressure on law enforcement and the pressure they put on potential witnesses. There are others too, but the point remains that there area lot of innocent people charged with these sorts of offenses. That is why there have been well over 100 people released from Death Row over the last decade.

Another issue is that when a guilty guy gets offered life without parole: he takes it. An innocent guy gets offered life without parole he is going to take his chances with a jury. They often lose.

I’m really glad that you got to see them, but are totally disgusted that you are in the situation you are in. That’s really just a travesty of justice.

Well, yes, like I said, I do feel bad sometimes that I’m bitter like that and feel the way I do, but trauma can have a pretty profound effect on a person.

I used to be dead set AGAINST the death penalty, but there’s nothing like seeing a friend (both of whom were horribly stabbed to death) lying in a coffin (one whose throat was cut so severely he had to be buried in a turtleneck that went up to his upper lip - and the other was stabbed so many times, he even had stab wounds through both his eye sockets - that’s why I TOTALLY believe in cremation - no one should see that).

After that, I was like, SIGH, yeah, okay, nevermind.

The Castrati? The Inquisition? Turning a blind eye on the holocaust?

Bosch:

I have NEVER seen in the Bible where sex is described as “unnatural”. To the contrary…it’s the reason and purpose as to why we’re here. I have attended both Baptist and Methodist churches. I have NEVER heard a sermon that claims sex as a dirty act. It is always put forth as a natural instinct and is therefore not a sin within itself. The consequences are the focus. There can be a welcome results or those wrought with difficulties. That’s why we are asked to be responsible when considering it. The difficult consequences are visited upon our children. That, to me is the greatest incentive to be responsible with our bodies.

Bosch, I’m not sure what message you’ve received from the pulpit, but those I’ve received and the sermons my friends have received are nothing like the church directives you speak about.

Natural urges aren’t in debate here. They are acknowledged by the church. We’re being asked to behave better than animals and use the reasoning God gave us.

Sometimes I see you as reasonable. Other times, I have to question your true objectives.

We are a society that in the interest of the individual’s right, are eagerly destroying our children.

I don’t have time to find it right now, but a study was done by a “secular” psychologist/sociologist who does a great job in pointing out the results and unintended consequences of the sexual revolution in this country.

It’s perpetual and it isn’t pretty.

I’m sure each individual pedophil priest has unique reasons or excuses for doing what they did…sexual orientation has nothing to do with perversion…from what I understand it has very little to do with sex, and a lot to do with power and control.

Mrs. Godzilla,

The “problem” that I addressed was specifically Pedophilia in Priests and what role access to marriage plays in preventing it.

You have veered off topic and stretched the “problem” to be virtually anything that causes people to be “sexually repressed”.

Despite your eagerness to engage others on these topics, I am not going to engage in such a broad and irrelevant discussion as it would be a pointless endeavor.

One reason we have failed in fighting terrorism is because we’ve got too much of our resources bogged down in the occupation of Iraq:

President Bush’s top counterterrorism advisers acknowledged Tuesday that the strategy for fighting Osama bin Laden’s leadership of Al Qaeda in Pakistan had failed, as the White House released a grim new intelligence assessment that has forced the administration to consider more aggressive measures inside Pakistan.

Once again I ask, what was the big hurry in overthrowing Saddam Hussein in 2003, when we had yet to contain or defeat Al Qaeda in Afghanistan and Pakistan?

Bush’s “war on terror” is an abysmal failure.

Can you not at least agree that claiming that marriage is the answer is counterintuitive?

So let me get this straight…you’re saying that since these priests are mostly interested in little boys, marriage would not benefit them…I do agree that it does seem that pedophile priests have a definate affinity towards boys…however, in the secular world, most victims of sexual abuse are girls (no statistics right now to give you), but thats pretty much a no brainer. Evidently we both agree that sexual orientation has nothing to do with perversion. What all catholic priests do have in common is the inability to marry and have intimate love in their life. Do you contend that marriage would not benefit them simply because the majority of them abuse the same sex, or are you saying that marriage is just a bad idea for these guys anyway? I guess thats where I’m getting confused. None of us can say why any of these sick men did what they did, but doesn’t it stand to reason that if they were offered a normal sex life it would give them at least another option of getting their rocks off?Would it help if we instated gay marriage so they would be benefited? Thats where you’re going with this isn’t it? I knew you were one of us all along :)

I agree with Duh with his idea that we expand the war rather than withdraw from Iraq. We should invade Pakistan because that’s where Bin Laden is and they have nukes, Iran because they want nukes and are crazy, Saudi Arabia because they produce more terrorsits per capita than any place in the world, Syria because it supports terrorism, Jordan because it isn’t a democracy, Egypt because it is a breeding ground for terrorists, Venezuala becauuse of Chavez, Cuba because of Castro, China because its Communist, France just because, Great Britain because they invaded in 1812, India just because there are too many of them and they’ve got nukes, and then we need to deal with the enemy within: The libs. We need to exterminate them with extreme prejudice. In fact, after we are done there will be only be about 60,000,000 of us on the planet. As Stalin said, “the death of one man is a tragedy. I AM saying that marriage won’t benefit them. I do not believe that their perverse inclinations are a result of a lack of opportunity.

rushncap,

Marriage is “just a piece of paper” was a mantra of the Left until they decided to promote Gay Marriage, when suddenly that piece of paper became very, very important.

Perhaps your youth is responsible for your ignorance of that quaint relic of Leftist activism.

Raisedanidiot and mrs. Godzilla,

While doing a Google Search of “Pedophile Priests+Statistics” I came across this fine piece by Michael Medved.

Finally, many attacks center on the tradition of priestly celibacy, in a spasm of trendy Catholic-bashing that reflects the basest sort of inconsistency. Gay activists and establishment opinion leaders unequivocally insist that homosexual identity is innate and inborn as blue eyes or left-handedness. These same enlightened thinkers then turn around and say that celibacy in the priesthood pushes prelates to pedophilia. If only priests were allowed to marry, the conventional wisdom declares, then they wouldn’t even feel tempted to molest little boys.

AND

{{{Moreover, nearly all victims of child-molesting priests turned out to be little boys, not little girls. If celibacy caused this problem, rather than homosexuality, why wouldn’t straight priests laboring under the same sexual restrictions abuse girls at least as frequently as their colleagues ravished boys?}}}

AND

{{{This uncomfortable question touches another illogical position of those who want to use this scandal as an excuse to attack a traditionalist church. The same people expressing the most strident condemnation of gay priests molesting young boys, also demand public pressure to force the Boy Scouts to embrace gay scout masters – insisting that such leaders present no danger to our sons. }}}

Well said! I yield the floor!
