There is not one Republican candidate or candidate wannabe that could earn my vote next year.
But I have an honest admiration for John McCain. I very strongly disagree with most everything he says, but he speaks from his heart.
I’d like to see his campaign continue. He and Ron Paul and a small amount of color to the pastey white GOP slate.
Senator McCain, I can’t vote for you, but you’re welcome for lively debate and dinner any time.

Prior to his capitulation to the Bush Administration on torture, I would have considered voting for McCain ahead of some of the potential Dem candidates.
He took what appeared to be a principled stand, then caved, then never brought it up again.
I guess he now considers torture to be an acceptable policy of the US gov’t…

Dear Democrats,
McCain was your candidate.
Why do you think he can’t raise any money and his campaign is failing?
Oh, and how much courage did you have to muster to take on the 12th place Republican presidential candidate?
However, we will take McCain’s advice on occasion:
{{{{{{{{{“General Petraeus and his commanders believe that they have a strategy that can, over time, lead to success in Iraq. General Petraeus and Ambassador Ryan Crocker will come to Washington in September to report on the status of their efforts, and those of the Iraqis. They ask just two things of us: the time necessary to see whether their efforts can succeed, and the political courage to support them in their work. I believe that we must give them both.}}}}}}}}}

An Al Qaeda cell may be in the US ready to attack at any moment… so Bush is scheduling an emergency meeting… in a few days, or so…
No rush. They may be about to attack, so the meeting is for Thursday because, you know, today or tomorrow would have been, uh, too early.
The White House leaked this report to ABC in order to influence the Iraq debate in Congress this week. Does anyone really believe that Bush is having a super secret counter terror meeting and it just happens to leak out by accident? If so, then I’m waiting for Bush to launch his criminal investigation of the leak the same way he always does with leaks that he doesn’t intend. In fact Karl Rove is helping run Iraq strategy for the White House. Yes, Karl Rove, the guy who does politics, not substance, is in charge of Iraq strategy now. And 24 hours later we see a leak like this? No coincidence there.
I guess this means Bush will cancel his usual month-long vacation in August, to deal with the threat.
Unfortunately for us, it’s not a case of “if we leave they’ll follow us home”. It’s more like “they’re coming here because we’re there”.

Sure, McCain took a principled stand on the Iraq War.
He also took a principled stand on the Immigration legislation.
On the other hand, he caved without explanation on the US policy of torture and he caved to Falwell (God rest his soul) in what appeared to be a pure political move to position himself for the GOP nomination.
He may truly believe what he says about how much improvement he is seeing in Iraq, his shopping trip to a Baghdad market complete with dozens of troops, humvees and Apaches…
Heck he may even believe that the war in Iraq is worth the sacrifice of 50,000 US troops and $10 Trillion (in addition to the 3,600 lives already sacrificed).

Well, let’s see. Today’s Whack-A-Republican is our esteemed John McCain as done by our twittering liberal Mikey Luckovich.
McCain is only a Viet Nam veteran who served years as a POW and still loved his country and fights for it any way he can.

“Anti-Neo-Con” Dimwit,
I don’t “Buy Dhimmitude”, I am ferociously anti-Dhimmi, and it is particularly foolish of you to assign a nickname to me that accurately describes yourself and legions of dangerously loony Leftists.
For the benefit of others who (unlike the particular dimwit I am addressing) may actually possess the capacity to think, this is as good a definition of Dhimmitude as any:
“As for the concept of dhimmitude, it represents a behavior dictated by fear (terrorism), pacifism when aggressed, rather than resistance, servility because of cowardice and vulnerability. The origin of this concept is to be found in the condition of the Infidel people who submit to the Islamic rule without fighting in order to avoid the onslaught of jihad. By their peaceful surrender to the Islamic army, they obtained the security for their life, belongings and religion, but they had to accept a condition of inferiority, spoliation and humiliation. As they were forbidden to possess weapons and give testimony against a Muslim, they were put in a position of vulnerability and humility.”
Speaking of loony Leftists……>
Mrs. Godzilla,
You’ll have to explain how John McCain is heroic while George Bush is evil, since they are firmly aligned on the most important issues of our time - the Iraq War as part of the larger War on Terror, and Immigration.
The fact that conservatives do support the War but do not support their disastrous immigration policy (not to mention opposing McCain-Feingold which Bush foolishly signed) kinda blows the rhetoric that we are robotic “Bush Bots” now - doesn’t it?

How easily most of us are led to drop our consciousness to the lowest common denominator, to react in kind to those with dark consciousness. How would the world change if we could remain true to our own light and, rather than being re-actors, maintain a higher consciousness and act and speak from that place? The consciousness of violence, the verbal violence displayed on these blogs, makes it so clear how we as a collective conscience create the violence that fills the world around us every day. And it is those who come from such low consciousness who are the first to condemn the violent offender, who want to treat him with violence, rather than seeing that we, each and every one of us, create the violent offender and are just like him in our hearts! We need not worry about the splinter in the other man’s/woman’s eye; we need to remove the log from our own eye.

Because when it came time to act, they returned to their accustomed role as the President’s lackey.”

You want a list of our President’s accomplishments? There are quite a few. But before you run off to the drug store to get your prescriptions filled under the new drug plan for Seniors, give us Clinton’s accomplishments.
You go first. Think hard now. And don’t say it isn’t fair to mention Clinton. Why not? Because he’s a liberal? His “accomplishments” are well know thoughout the world. Many women are quite aware of them. Maybe you could list them.

Austin–I just spent the weekend in this state capital, talkin’ impeachment at a meeting organized by the Texas Green Party, World Can’t Wait and Austin Impeach (www.austinimpeach.org), and was flying back home via Atlanta. As I was boarding my flight, the pilot, an Air Force veteran like many commercial pilots, looked at the bold “Impeach Bush and Cheney” emblazoned across my chest, smiled and said, “I like your shirt.” Some 20 minutes later when the flight attendant came through serving drinks and I asked for a bottle of red wine, she handed me a bottle and then waved away my proffered five dollars. “With that shirt, you don’t have to pay,” she said to me. Mrs. Godzilla,
Am I to infer that you agree with R.F.K., jr who states that people who disagree with him on issues are “traitors” who have committed “treason”?
I ask because you seem to be implying that because you disagree with Bush (but admire McCain who agrees with Bush, but I digress), or because you are not satisfied with Bush’s accomplishments, that he deserves to be “impeached”.
For the record I agree with Bush on the war, taxes, drilling in ANWR, refusing to sign KYOTO, and judicial appointees.
I vehemently disagree with him on immigration, I think Karen Hughes is a disaster, I disagree with his current policy with the Palestinians which permitted elections they did not deserve and resulted with a victory for Hamas, and I oppose any energy policy that includes the promotion of corn-based Ethanol as an alternative fuel.
Is that too “rosy” for you?
LHU,
How many American citizens have to die as you empower AQ and (among other dangerous tactics) willingly hand them their longed for Caliphate and base of operations in Iraq, from which they can run Jihadi terror camps to launch more attacks on us here at home - or elsewhere?
How many Iranians do you believe can conduct a proxy war against us unhindered?
How many provinces, like Anbar, have to be won before you admit that the surge is working and Iraqis are turning against AQ?

Good afternoon. A while back we had a brief discussion regarding political third parties.
I saw Sam Waterston (Deputy DA on Law and Order) in an interview discussing politics. He wasn’t stumping for Fred Thompson - he was discussing the Unity08 Party. Said how he’s watched, over the course of his life, both parties move to extreme ends of the spectrum, get co-opted by big-money donors, special interests and single-issue partisans, so the 40 percent of the electorate who call themselves “centrists” are shut out.
So he’s part of an Internet-based organization. He said how they’ll have an Internet convention and people who sign up will nominate their own candidate. After what happened with John Dean and Internet support fueling his candidacy, Obama’s resounding success with his Internet-based fund raising, this could get interesting. Seems like a good way, if not to bypass, at least a way to counter the influence of those who have so polarized the political process.

He (Bush) “Still has faith in the AG” states a spokesman in response to a call for investigation into a firing of US attorneys. Taylor, a former political advisor states she will refuse to answer most questions posed by federal investigators (oh yeah, unless-I read that). She’s ‘confident’ Bush’s instructions are correct (scared maybe)??? Don’t forget Bush’s ‘confidence’ in Scooter Libby. Now he (Bush) is confident Scootie’s sentence was excessive. Then we have Hurricane Katrina, “Brownie you’re doing a heckava job!” What confidence!!! And those WMD’s!!!!!!!!!!!!! What confidence! Where are they?? I’ve seen that question before. Seems to me it’s part of a current fad: foreign (read: military intervention) policy by casualty count. Look at one of the arguments invoked in support of the Kosovo intervention: how many US soldiers were killed? Or to justify another war (as some candidates are advocating) because the projected casualties will be “low.” I’d kinda hate to have a family member be one of the acceptable losses in a conflict I thought was not in America’s vital interest. It also leads to the problem of “okay, we’ve hit N casualties, time to go.” Or, getting into something and getting blindsided by the “known unknowns.”
Of course, that has absolutely nothing to do with taking action even if the casualties will be horrendous, or of recognizing a course is not in America’s interest (or even if it is, not a course we can dictate) and ceasing operations, regardless of the casualties that have occurred.
Did you notice that last paragraph was an example of “preemption” - taking action to avoid the nearly inevitable, problematic, largely irrelevant (in the current context) comparison to Iraq? Preemption does have its place -

Paragraph two was about special interests (think philosophical or business entities), paragraph three about single-issue organizations (think average folks bound together by a single issue).
Regarding your next to last sentence, I tried to give enough examples of “single issues” to avoid the shoot first and verify later reaction you had. If you’re thinking special interests are only on the “Right” well - that seems pretty ideological to me.
You may want to check to generally accepted definition of “troll” as applied to the Web. The people to whom I addressed the posts didn’t seem to have difficulty with them. Then again, when people conduct discussions with namecalling, I suppose accurate definitions aren’t all that important -

The President, the Vice-President and other cabinet members(with tacit approval of the President), in attempting to gain support for a war against Iraq, made statements that they knew, or should have known were false, to wit: “Saddam Hussien has reconstituted his nuclear program” “Saddam Hussien has attempted to acquire large amounts of uranium from Niger.” “Mohammed Atta met with an Iraqi Intelligence Officer in Prague shortly before the 9/11 attack.”
All of these statements were either knowingly false, made with reckless disregard of the truth, or made with indiffernce to the truth. None of these statements were made in good faith. All of these statements were made despite the fact that other avaliable intelligence either contradicted these statements in part and/or disputed them in whole. All of these statements were made with the intention of gaining public support, and thus congressional approval, for war with Iraq. Such statements, with such purposes, reflect a level of insincerity, fraud, deciet and/or a level of incompetence in performing their respective duties that they amount, in their culmative effect, to wit: 500 Billion Dollars, 3,600 dead soldiers, over 25,000 wounded soldiers, among other things, to an ongoing criminal enterprise. In short, whether these statements to the American people were made because of incompetence or malice, due to the reasons they were made and the effects that they have had, the President and the Vice-President are unfit to serve in their current positions and their further service will lead only to more and more American deaths due to their deceit, fraud or incompetence. The American People deserve, and the Constition implicilty requires, a President and a Vice-President who either tell the truth about such important matters, or who are at the very least competent enough to know what the truth is.

The standout in the article was Sen Byrd. All those years on Appropriations, yet he didn’t have his wife form a woman-owned minority construction business or do any of the myriad things so many Congressmen do to get rich (except those who are evil businesspersons, ‘cause they’re all Republicans, right?). My respect for him just went up a notch.
If you haven’t had the opportunity, drive through the state sometime. It’s beautiful - great highways. Sen Bryd did them well. Without him, there wouldn’t be much money flowing into the state from any source -

Well, the second paragraph was intended for the likes of agricultural conglomerates pushing taxpayer-funded ethanol so they’ll get more for corn. Or American car manufactures donating to Michigan Congressman so auto mileage increases will get stalled. Several of the examples you cite fall into (in my mind, anyhow) either special interests or the single-issue crowd: anything dealing with homosexuality (both pro and con)(both groups), Christian ideology as applied to social causes (both groups); Left/Liberal/Extreme ideology applied to social causes (mostly special interest); corporate rape (I’m not sure if you mean the rapist (corporations? Congress?) or the victim (corporations or the American taxpayers, depending on your point of view); I’m sure there are some who are Islamic paranoids, which I’ll distinguish from those (including some Muslims) who distinguish between “Islamic paranoids” and “those who recognize Islamic jihadists constitute a danger.”

The Article, drafted just off the top of my head, doesn’t say that they didn’t believe it. It says that even if you want to give them the benefit of the doubt that they believe the lies they were telling, they are too incompetent to be in their current positions. As far as the Dems who voted for the war, as well as the people like you who were for it, you are all also incompetent. But you aren’t the president. Your defense is weak. Address the issue. Whether they lied or are too incompetent to know the truth shouldn’t they be removed. I mean if you were president and you wanted to go to war with Russia because they are conspiring with the Intergalatic alien forces against us, I really don’t care that you believe it. You ought to be removed for being an idiot, a really really dangerous idiot. That is what these guys are…or they are malicious killers. Either way, they gotta go.

Jocelyn Elders was a politically correct joke peddling the politically correct views of Hillary, err, Bill’s domestic policy.
I believe it is inappropriate for the Surgeon General to advocate publicly what should be private behavior.
It is the role of PARENTS (and IF THEY WISH, of their children’s private physicians) to discuss these things with their children, and should not be under the purview of Nanny State Elders.

Marvelous spech today by Lindsay graham. A must - see for those who enjoy their ignorance raw. Of the “good” progress being made in Iraq. Of the troops who “eagerly” volunteer for repeated tours because they enjoy that “positive” progress. And when the slaughter ultimately comes to pass it will be strictly due to those who opposed the war. The “dramatic new” positive results of “the surge.” Repeated references to “God” blessing those who support the war. And, of course, repeated references to the Bushies’ new trick of blaming the whole thing on IRAN. Focus on our new enemy, Iran, thereby minimalizing the focus on the Iraq nightmare. It’s all the fault of Iran and its “new” policies. (As tho anything in that world has changed recently). “God. God. God.” You’ll love it. Gotta hand it to the Republiscum: they’re actually proud of the fact that they don’t know today what they didn’t know in the past.

Cindy,
Okay, you lost me there. I was citing examples of issues and where I see them fall on the political spectrum. I don’t recall citing Left/Liberal as a special interest. I don’t think it even fits with the definition of special interest I gave.
Special interests and single-issue voters exist at both ends of the spectrum. Every so often I read here what I interpret is the assertion that special interests and single-issue voters are the sole province of conservative/right wingers/neocons/Republicans (pick your label). I’m saying both parties and both sides have them. It’s the “you’re anti-abortion so you’re a single-interest radical, but if I want to reject every Supreme Court nominee because he doesn’t pass my standards for women’s/abortion rights then I’m just a reasonable person looking out for the welfare of America.” Or words to that effect.
You may want to read my first post to rushncap - the one about unity08 and Waterston’s comments. I do not fault much of what he said or what he’s trying to do. Or check the earlier reference to earmarks. Both parties by and large are comprised of pork pushers (even Ron Paul, but not the Congressman from Arizona - Flake).
I don’t mean this to sound reasonable. I think much of the current political structure and stagnation in this country is pretty unreasonable and I fault activists in both Parties, monied interests and … oh, just read Obama’s first book. He lays it out pretty well. Not that he’ll be able to do anything about it -

I have a question, totally off-topic but somewhat on topic for Buy Danish’s 3:53 and how morals and ethics can impact our kids. No jokes please, it wouldn’t be appropriate.
Prime Time last night was on the subject of sperm donors, #’s not names applied to the donors/tubes. Most of the women were looking for designer babies. In the early stages of the new endeavor, the focus was on good looks. One male model was purported to have fathered well above 60 children, most likely more.
Later, the focus was on intelligence and looks. They are guessing that there are over a million children who are the product of this procedure. Money was cited as the motivation for men to donate. Some now have regrets, but many maintain their anonymity. It was said that some European countries have changed the laws whereby fathers’ identity must be divulged. As a result, donations are down considerably.
It all seems rather sordid to me and leaves kids very vulnerable both psychologically and physically.
Now, if unbeknownst to them, two half siblings were to meet, have sex with or without the benefit of marriage that resulted in the birth of an offspring? Would that baby suffer abnormalities?
Some women actually purchase the entire vile, take what they need from it and then sell the leftovers to someone else.
Leftover babies? Aren’t they all?

“Left/Liberal/Extreme ideology applied to social causes (mostly special interest);”
and the fact that you didn’t bother to insert any rightist ideas.
Government is about making laws for the country. Many local politicians start out because they want something enacted that is personal to them. It might have worked better when only white males could vote, own property, etc., but it seems there are too many different ideas, groups and philosophies now for politicians to be self serving, but I still think they follow the $ rather than the country. It always makes me giggle when I hear somebody negatively talking about a politician putting their finger in the air or watching polls to see how the citizens feel about certain topics. Actually, in most cases it is their job to do the citizen’s bidding.

Or possibly it’s just that some can’t formulate a cogent statement, let alone argument, on their own.
But being understanding, assuming it was written by someone responding to my 3:39 who, while typing in “name” was thinking “responding to” - (Cindy, is that you?)
[[and the fact that you didn’t bother to insert any rightist ideas.]]
I thought at 2:26 where I cited the war in Iraq, abortion and special racial issues I was referring to right-wing issues. I guess I should have included “school prayer” - that’s a good one. But I’m pleased you see my point about Left-wing special interest groups and single-issue litmus tests.
I pretty much discounted the last paragraph when I got to the “white males” part - seems like a rather tired red herring.
Doing citizens’ bidding is why so many laws passed by Congress and signed into law have been found unconstitutional by the Supreme Court. Alexander Hamilton had some pretty provocative ideas on the general… advisability?… of following the will of the masses.

Good cartoon Mr. Luckovich!
John McCain didn’t lose his cred when he sucked up to Falwell. He didn’t even lose it when he supported Bush’s crazy idea of a war.
He had already lost it when he didn’t stand up to Karl Rove and the GOP slime machine in South Carolina.
And then for him to merrily jump right back on the Bush bandwagon was for me, like many Americans I’m sure, simply nauseating. Even with my respect for him as a POW, I could not vote for someone who so meekly would allow those men to do that.
THAT is why he has never been a relevant candidate since.
In South Carolina, Bush supporters circulated church fliers that labeled McCain “the f* candidate.”
Among the rumors circulated against McCain in 2000 in South Carolina was that his adopted Bangladeshi daughter was actually black, that McCain was both gay and cheated on his wife, and that his wife Cindy was a drug addict.”
“A smear campaign of the ugliest sort is now coursing through the contest for the presidency in 2000. Using the code word “temper,” a group of Senate Republicans, and at least some outriders of the George W. Bush campaign, are spreading the word that John McCain is unstable. The subtext, also suggested in this whispering campaign, is that he returned from 5 1/2 years as a POW in North Vietnam with a loose screw. And it is bruited about that he shouldn’t be entrusted with nuclear weapons.”

Forget about the traitors in this country who brought us the Iraq insanity. Blame it on Iran and the stupid masses will, as always, believe it and mouth it.
For those many imbeciles out there and those who never served in the military, one of the first things taught in military bootcamp are the damned rules. In situations especially like those in Iraq you don’t engage in unnecessary and needless killing and slaughter. You are taught that and you know that! For those Marines and others who did indeed commit such atrocities, they need to be punished in accordance. Be a great military if everyone did whatever he felt like doing and pleased him at the moment. GI’s have responsibilities and need to live up to them. They are supposed to be Americans and Americans don’t act like that, right? Don’t give me this patriotic crap. I just breezed through an article - don’t remember the state - where the legislature just drastically altered the penalties for sex between minors. It’s a start - some of the provisions, such as they had to have been dating for a year or two (eternity to a teenager), no more than a four-year spread between ages (although 13-17 seems a bit much to me, maybe two years is more reasonable) and a few other provisions were enacted. I understand it was to address cases such as the one in Kentucky where the 17-year-old went to prison, got out, then married the young lady (who’d had a baby) - they’ve been married several years and —- he’s a registered sex offender!
The pendulum swings and pretty soon the law is where it should be (IMHO).
Are kids having unprotected sex? Just look at all the “babies having babies” out there. Or grandkids being raised by grandparents or great-grandparents. Talk about almost guaranteeing a life of poverty. It’s pretty sad.

Genarlow Wilson wasn’t at the age of consent and neither was the girl. IT WAS TWO MINORS HAVING CONSENSUAL SEX!!
Paul,
I totally agree with you about the travesty of kids having unprotected sex. It is truly a recipe for disaster, which is why we shouldn’t be sheepish about talking about sex in general. Kids should learn patience and they definitely need to learn about contraceptives and safe sex. I know that we wish that our kids will practice abstinence until marriage, but I remember sneaking out of the house after midnight quite often to see my girlfriend when I was in high school, despite my good Christian upbringing….and I know that I’m not alone in that regard.

Buy Danish @ 5:00,
Thanks for responding. Nobody else seemed interested. I was about to file those one million plus kids into #13. I mean, what’s a couple more, right?
Anyway, I’m still left with the question of abnormalities in potential offspring. I’m checking that online now. I was really surprised that question wasn’t addressed on Prime Time or any other program that approaches the subject of sperm donation.
Oh btw, I’ve always heard that the people who like to “talk” about sex usually aren’t getting any.
I know you didn’t ask nor should you have, but I’m doing great. :-P

Mrs. G,
Right on cue you are “sharing” very private information with strangers. I’m very sorry for your terrible childhood experiences, however I don’t believe that this is the best forum for airing them.
It may explain your inappropriate compulsion to make the private public and your false analogy between privacy and prudishness.
It also may explain why you have so little faith in parents and so much faith in Big Government.
As for you “expertise” on female orgasms, you have forgotten that you once told shared some information with us which I won’t repeat. I asked you at the time how you came by this amazing “expertise”, but you never answered.
As I have no intention of discussing my sex life with you, you’ll have to find other sources for your “research”.
Stevie,
It doesn’t surprise me that you can’t differentiate between Elvis and crotch grabbing, or that you think a political blog is an appropriate place to discuss your exploits.
You seem to think that bragging about your sex life makes you come off as sexy to the rest of us, when it just makes you sound boorish and a bit desperate.
People who have seen the Genarlow Wilson video would disagree about how “consensual” it was.
gotta run!

Big topic of the day here seems to be masturbation. Hey, I’m a big believer in masturbation, especially when you lack an alternative. Its been a major calmative for zillions forever. Except maybe rightwing born-agin Christians. Of course a lot of “stuff” is wasted along the way. Some of it even falls on the floor, the carpet, or somewhere in the deep woods. Possibly you could spare us the necessity of watching H&C and simply list for us the dates, places, deaths and injuries of Al Qaeda attacks against US territory or interests through the 1990s, the direct US response, the restructuring of our military forces and equipment to deal with the escalating threat, the statements of Islamic jihadists regarding their plan of action against the West, bin Laden’s declaration of war against the US and how the US government prepared our country?
Thanks - it’ll save me from listening to another shouting match.

Nobody is “running from sex” here. Conservatives just don’t like “dirt”. Liberals are making sex into something to be enjoyed like a bunch of animals in heat, anywhere, anytime, anybody, anyway.
Conservatives try for a higher standard of life and it is known as decent. The only excuse for promiscuity is ignorance or little concern for anybody else if “you get yours”. Permanent relationships are hard to follow after promiscuity.
I hope all of you get treatment for your STDs, your herpes and possibly AIDs. But 0h 0h oh —everybody’s got to have their fun, ‘specially drop dead losers.

Paul…Do your own homework.
However, I feel compelled to point out that the war in Iraq has been BOTH a disaster AND a huge distraction from deterring the terrorists. It has, in fact, made the situation worse.
You and the other cons still don’t get that point, so I’ll make it simple.
The war in Afghanistan was just, supported by a broad coalition of countries and by the vast majority of the American people.
Only after the debacle in Iraq began did the situation in Afghanistan start to deteriorate.
The war in Iraq is unjust and has been marked by severe incompetence for over 4 years. It was not and is not supported by any substantive coalition of nations and 6-7 out of 10 Americans want us out.
Got it. I expect competence, you apparently do not.

It is important to recall that Saddam had thrown the U.N. weapons inspectors out of Iraq in 1998, and allowed them to return in 2002 only because of the credible threat of a U.S. attack. In addition, the sanctions regime was collapsing—Saddam had learned how to extract billions of dollars for weapons out of the humanitarian exceptions to those sanctions—and our European friends, and perhaps U.N. officials themselves, were complicit in this. Under these circumstances, Saddam could not have been “contained” or rendered harmless, and Iraq could not have been indefinitely subject to U.N. inspections. At some point, Saddam would have been able to throw out the inspectors again, with no further action by the U.N. It was clear that the U.N. itself would do nothing to enforce its own resolutions.// We also know from the reports of the weapons inspectors that Saddam and his scientists were working to develop nuclear weapons, work that certainly would have continued if Saddam had remained in place. Saddam had already demonstrated that he would use chemical weapons, and there is no reason in logic that he wouldn’t also restore his chemical weapons stocks once the inspectors had left. He had the largest army in the region, and had shown a determination to use it for expanding his control beyond Iraq. It’s not far-fetched, therefore, to consider what economists call a counterfactual—what things would look like today if the U.S. had not invaded Iraq.

I have done my homework, which is why I could dash off the response so quickly. I’d wondered if you’d ever researched the matter, or if you had, how you could so blithely discount the statements and actions of some very serious people.
I wasn’t referring to Iraq. At all. I believe I wrote of actions and attitudes that did and did not occur in the 1990s. I generally discount Iraq heavily in my view of Islamic jihadists. Concentrating on Afghanistan strikes me as equally myopic. Same for the “let’s invade Pakistan and get bin Laden!” crowd. There are a numerous theaters of conflict, on many levels, and viewing this war (again, NOT Iraq) solely though the lens of traditional military action is, in my view, a grave error.

Well Paul, why don’t you give us all a summary of your approach to dealing with the terrorist threat?
I WAS referring to Iraq since we have 160,000 troops there, are spending $10 Billion plus per month there, have been there for 4 years and, during those four years, things have gotten steadily worse.
I am not for only concentrating on Afghanistan at all. You are arrogant and mistaken to make that assumption.
Face it, Iraq is a distraction from the ‘War of Terror.’ Pointing out that fact does not equate to a ‘myopic’ concentration on Afghanistan.
But, please educate us to Paul’s approach to the ‘War on Terror.’

I’m back.
Paul,
I did see that video and it was about as consensual as that video of the 4 year old girl who is rumored to have been given Ectasy, but Horns is right in that she was too young to “consent” in any case.
It was also a public sexcapade and not a private encounter - and what a pity that I am so narrow minded that I remain unconvinced how fantabulously erotic that is.

I know you were referring to Iraq at 6:14. It struck me as entirely off point for what I wrote at 5:57 regarding the rise of Islamic jihadism. Reiterating it again at 6:37 doesn’t make it any more relevant to my 5:57.
I never said, or implied, you were “only” for concentrating on Afghanistan. My next sentence at 6:14 reference those who want to invade Pakistan. Both were given as examples of attitudes that seem to me pretty constricted.
Youu didn’t say where you were for concentrating. Where else is there? I can think of a few. Careful - you’ll get attacked as an imperialist (unless it’s Sudan - that’s okay imperialism) or here at home - then you’ll be a neocon fascist.
I think I’ve said several times on this forum Iraq can be viewed as a distraction from the war against militant Islam, so I have “faced it.”
You can breathe. The webmaster’s about to shut us down for the night. I could be snarky in response to your “educate us” request and say what you said at 6:14 “do your own homework.”
For now, I’ll simply refer you to “Real Security: The Democratic Plan to Protect America and Restore Our Leadership in the World.”

Thanks. I figured there was a “rest of the story.”
I’m pretty sure as a legal matter minors don’t consent to sex (I believe the intent of the law was with adults). The age spread of these two, plus the inebriation, is pretty troubling. Not a lot of respect for young ladies that I can see. Or for themselves, for that matter.

I’m out in the internet when I stumble on this Iraqi blogger. A young dentist living in Iraq. He seems legitimate; sings noone’s praises, but says he simply wants to share the truth about Iraq today. He points out some mistakes made in the past, but his future, Iraq’s future starts TODAY.
((( I wish that they success or even achieve some changes , we haven’t seen any till now , and i don’t think we will soon.anyway I always hear people say that if the US forces leaves Iraq everything will be OK!!! I don’t know how does these people think?if the US forces leaves today , tomorrow I’ll be face to face with an Iranian soldier , I had a dispute with my friend about this today, I know most Americans wish that their sons and fathers would get back to their homes very soon , and I think that’s their right , but at the same what about the Iraqi people?haven’t the US government promised Iraqis a new , united , prospered , liberated , democratic and peaceful Iraq? at least now with the US troops in Iraq there is a higher authority above the corrupted Iraqi government , if they are gone what will stop these sectarian beasts from committing unlimited massacre?)))
An interesting and very civil exchange going on between an informed American poster and this young dentist.

Good Paul…I am glad we can agree that the war in Iraq is a disaster and a distraction from the real terrorist threat.
Since you agree on this point, I hope you will join me in condemning the decision to invade and the severe incompetence that is now unfortunately coupled with that terrible decision.
I absolutely believe that our ability to deal with the actual terrorist threat (instead of the fictional threat that was trumped up by the Bush Admin in Iraq) is dependent upon ending that distraction.
Thereafter, our efforts should be extended to the safe havens we have allowed Pakistan to establish, hammering Saudi Arabia’s role in financing and enabling terrorist activity, etc. (this is just a couple of examples so don’t jump to conclusions…).
Be careful, though. Some of the cons here will start calling you names now…
