Was Cheney implicated or indicted in this “politically motivated outing”? I don’t remember reading anything about that, but being a good “leftist” ml knows the unknown and will forever use government to chase the unattainable.
I do however remember the report Wilson returned from Niger with didn’t say Iraq had not attempted to acquire yellow-cake. It simply said the tri-nation oversight of uranium mining in Niger would have probably prevented any transfer. But, the “media” being concerned with the truth did not let us know about that.

Well, the questions to the Rep candidates last night by CNN just made MSNBC look like partisan amateur hour. Maybe standards are slowly rising.
I saw an advertisement on CNN for a special on Hillary, Obama and Edwards talking about faith, God and such. How they believe, how it operates in their lives. I had to back up and replay.
It occurs there are many who post here are not going to have anyone to vote for in ‘08. Religious Reps. Religious Dems. But I do look forward to the equal-opportunity bashing of religious Democratic candidates.
As if those views mattered in the first place -
BTW - ML could have done the ‘toon with a “Get Out of Jail Free Card.” Instead of Libby there could have been a crowd with Armitage, Fitz, Wilson, NYT editors, Novak, etc ad nauseum. And instead of a Monopoly box it would be a Politics 101 box.

Well ml, the call to pardon Libby in last night’s debate drew applause. Did they show how it registered on the “mood meter” used by CNN.
That meter was rather interesting, but they didn’t explain how it worked. How exactly do you hook up to a mooooood?
I can understand how it works with the Democratic candidates. They moooooood everything that their constituents wanted to hear.

Editorial cartoons have lots of explanations - many see what they’re predisposed to see.
I take it as showing Cheney was really guilty (of what, no one’s ever explained to me) and does a handoff of any consequences to Libby. Libby then gets handed the consequences for all the illegal, against the law, violation of statute of the Bush Administration (I guess being a member of the Bush Administration constitutes a “crime” for many).
I know, that doesn’t explain “funny” - maybe in a Greek tragedy sort of way for the Bush haters.

Its both funny and sad. The point that is being made is that Libby is going to jail in Cheney’s place because Libby covered for him by lying to the investigators. So, in effect, Cheney passed off his “Go to Jail” card to Libby. Pretty simple.

The reason Cheney wasn’t prosecuted is because he would have claimed that he had the executive authority to release the identity of a CIA operative to whomever he wanted including the NYT. The evidence is pretty clear that Libby and Rove both leaked Plame’s name under the authority of their respective bosses, Cheney and Bush. That is why the leak itself wasn’t a crime. Libby’s mistake was lying about what he couldn’t be ultimately prosecuted for in order to protect his boss, not from criminal wrongdoing, but substantial political fallout.

Last night did you muse about a Hillary-Ron Paul ticket, or some role for Ron Paul?
I rather think most Democrats would run screaming from anything dealing with Ron Paul. He ran as a Republican after getting defeated as a Libertarian. He votes according to principle, not special interests. He’d abolish the Federal Reserve, most government agencies, return to the gold standard, defer to states for most social policy, views Roe V Wade as a horrible decision by the Court for the role of states, and in general wants the Federal gov’t to stay out of most peoples’ lives if it’s not specifically enumerated in the Constitution.
But he is interesting in that he mixes things up. I don’t think the Dems have a counterpart - that ex-Senator from Alaska is pretty much a one-note wonder on Iraq.
Are you sure you didn’t mean RuPaul, not Ron Paul, as the last, greatest hope for Democrats in ‘08?

Interesting view. Reclassification authority rests with the Chief Executive - not the VP. The leak/confirmation/information wasn’t a crime because there was no violation of statute. Agreed. I’m not speaking of whether or not it was good, bad, political, immoral, consequental or not - just that the actions did not meet the test of violation of statute, which I think Fitz knew within the first month. Same reason Fitzgerald didn’t prosecute Armitage (of whom he was aware as the source from the start) - there was no violation of law.
I’ll agree about Libby - but “lying?” I’ve said before, my opinion (not fact) is Libby & company wanted to discredit Wilson by showing the only reason he was selected for the Niger mission was not his credentials (soft) but because he was recommended by his wife, who happened to work at CIA. Then Wilson went public with “hey, she just doesn’t work there, she’s a covert agent” and Libby, VP and all said “oh, s**t” and went into damage-control mode. For something, as you said, they couldn’t be prosecuted for - but they didn’t know that. And the guy was a lawyer who’d been up against Fitzgerald for years (Fitz was on the team prosecuting Marc Rich that got short circuited in part by Libby’s efforts). I like guys like Ron Paul - they mix things up, and since they take positions based upon principle, it’s fun to watch them go against people who are more… situational.
I’ve tried a couple of things, I think it’s the main air conditioner valve/drain (new) aren’t working properly so all the condensation goes to the overflow pan and out the overflow tube. We’re talking a lot of water here on the side of the house, here. The parts are under warranty, the labor’s not.
Did you hear about the guy who calls a plumber for a stopped up kitchen sink? Plumber works ten minutes, says to the guy, “all done, that’ll be $150.” The guy yells “$150 for ten minutes?!!? I’m a doctor and I don’t make that kind of money!” The plumber says, “Neither did I when I was a doctor.”

I am not suggesting that we should make clitorectomies legal. All I am saying is that we should avoid dehumanizing our fellow man as much as possible. History shows that when one group looks at another as animals and uses language that suggests that the other group is somehow less than human that it results in much violence. It is a tacit of many in Palistine and Arabia in what are called madrasses and sometimes even on the public airways in those areas. (This is where the Borat jokes about Jews with tails and horns have refernce.)
We should first and foremost understand. Second, we should respect that which we would expect the other group to respect in us. Third, we should, when and where possible, in a constructive and not demeaning way modify those behaviors that our evolving standards of decency suggest ought to be modified.
We enslaved tens of thousands of Africans because it was felt that they were lesser humans. We killed millions of Native Americans because it was thought that they were savages. Let’s try to avoid going down that road again. At least we should ignore those who try to send us in that most unfortunate direction.

Well, the A/C guy just left for parts. The installers reversed the drain pipes - the overflow drain went into the bathroom drain/sewer system while the main drain carrying all the normal condensation went straight to the outside of the house to make a little lake.

About the foot washing. My church has opted to do a ritual handwashing ceremony.
Since noone walks in sandals through dusty streets anymore, the process has progressed for some of us. I’m pretty sure that pantyhose contributed to the change. Shoes…socks…all that “stuff”.
Anyhoo, I think I prefer the handwashing. It is the hands of the church that reach out to the community and the world. More appropriate in my opinion.
So you see…many of us don’t adhere to the scriptures in their literal sense. We do progress as does our faith. Church doctrine and individual faith are two separate issues for us.

Last night you made reference to Vermont wants to secede. Today at lunch I skimmed thru yesterday’s BOR. First up was the Dr who’s leading the movement. Quite a guy. Second up was the woman in charge of Code Pink. BOR asked her about the organization, about how it’s going now that Cindy Sheehan’s left (volunteered CS felt betrayed by Democrats). Next up was Carl Bernstein of Watergate fame to pitch his book about Hillary - seven years in the making, lots of personal stuff. BOR’s questions (most) were “why should we care about her personal life? Weren’t you troubled by the things you wrote? What does it matter?”
Had to cut the review short. I don’t know what was on MSNBC or Comedy Central (I was watching CNN), but the good Dr, Ms Code Pink and Carl Bernstein (neocons? Spinmeisters? radical nuts? Bush lovers?) were given time to present their views and I learned a bit.

Did you know that when we invaded Iraq there were already 33 other wars currently under way around the world? Did you know that there have been 150 wars fought since WWII ended?
Did you know that during the last 4,000 years there have been only 286 years of peace despite more than 8,000 peace treaties?
Were you equally as troubled by all those OTHER wars, or is it just Bush’s war on terror?
Wars suck, but as horrible as they are, the outcome of war can be good if the victor exalts righteous principles, and I do believe that our military and the coalition forces exalt those principles.

The problem with this war isn’t personalities or party politics. The problem is that nobody in a decision making position thought through the distinct possibility that the mission as set out was unattainable and that the ultimate end could be quite worse than the problem we were trying to solve.
After Vietnam we went through a long period where, in the context of war, the main points of discussion were: Is the mission attainable? and What is our exit strategy? Unfortunatly we forgot the lessons of Vietnam.
We are throwing money and troops at a problem that we simply are in no position to solve. The Iraqis are going to decide the outcome of this whether it be next week, next year or in 10 years. The only question that remains is how many of our kids are going to die postponing the inevitable blood-letting that we put into motion.
It is a sad and difficult thing to say, but as a country we screwed up and a lot of people are going to die because we tried the impossible, but I sincerly would rather the Iraqis kill each other than continue to kill our guys. Al Qaeda is an ally of convienence for some of the fighters there. Once we clear out the Iraqis with deal with them…harshly.
Ask yourself: What is success? How can we get there? Why should our kids suffer while the Iraqis refuse to solve their political differences? Under what circumstances can we leave knowing the job is done? You can’t realistically or logically answer those questions because the solution is in the hands of others outside of our control who have no motivation to give in.
I agree with Bush that the only way to achieve anything in Iraq is to stay there like we have in Korea. We’ve been there for nearly 60 years, but we are guarding a border and our guys aren’t getting killed on a regular basis. Indefinite commitment is the only way. Are we willing to do that? Why? Do you want to see troops coming back in body bags in 2025 still trying to keep the Shia from killing the Shiite?
I, for one, say no damn way. We need to get out and try to re-learn the lessons of the past.

I heard plenty of disagreements among the Reps. Much more than among the Dems. In fact, post debate Dem talk was about how “don’t speak ill of another Dem” is still in full force and when they did disagree the audience smile-o-meter turned to a frown.
BTW - prob with Don’t Ask/Tell is one can be discharged for just admitting to being gay (I’ll have to check - don’t believe “keeping it secret” is a requirement) - without any overt conduct being discussed.

Paul, I think you’re kidding yourself my right-wing friend.
On the biggest POLICY issues facing us, there was virtually no dissent.
Every single one of them but Ron Paul are for surging/status quo in Iraq.
Everyone asked said they believe in Jesus as their savior and only a couple begrudgingly think evolution isn’t a crock. And that may well be just to get some “centralist” Republican votes, if there are any left.
ONLY Tancredo had the temerity to insuate, via implicating Karl Rove that he didn’t George Bush was a GREAT president. The others essentially think he is, just a little off on this Iraq thing. Funny that NONE would use him in any real capacity after he’s gone though!
All would probably pardon Libby, given the chance.
Virtually all would support keeping on the table not only the option of a military strike against Iran, but the use of tactical nuclear weapons.
I would say that the divisions between the Republicans were not at all pronounced, other than on immigration.
The neo-cons like their lemmings and these guys are not going to risk take any big chances to distance themselves from one another.

Well Moron, the Vietnam war was cancelled not lost. If you read any historical accounts of the Indochina conflict, you’ll learn that South Vietnam was able to defend itself for a full two and a half years AFTER the U.S. pulled our troops out. It was only when the Democrats cut ALL FUNDING (something that they’ve been threatening to do in Iraq) that the South Vietnamese fell to the NVA.
The rest is THE HISTORY that concerns me most. The statistics on the democide that occurred after Indochina was abandoned ARE staggering. More Vietnamese died AFTER the fall of Saigon than in the prior decade of fighting.
I read recently that those in Iraq who have been helping the coalition forces are begging…BEGGING our troops to bring them to the U.S. if we pull out before their security forces are operational.
Maybe THEY remember the history of Vietnam as well.
