{{{Until the recipient culture is capable of doing an effective job of Americanizing immigrants, it’s preposterous to talk about a massive influx of Hispanic immigrants accomplishing anything other than turning America into yet another Latin American-style banana republic. To the contrary, Democrats are trying to turn new immigrants into wards of the state — and with some success! — so they will be permanent Democratic voters. Rich Republicans and their handmaidens in Washington are trying to turn immigrants into a permanent servant class.}}}
Check this out, imagine down the road in a few decades when we have to pay these people “reparations” for the low slave wages they are getting today.
Or should I say reparación?
{{{Naturally, immigrants soon get angry. And rather than showing thanks for a ticket out of the slums of Mexico City or Tunis, blatant hypocrisy can follow: The once thankful, but now exhausted, alien may wave the flag of the country he would never return to while shunning the culture of the host county he would never leave.}}}
And:
{{{It is past time to remember that paying our own poorer laborers more, doing some occasional physical work and obeying the laws - the immigration ones especially - are not icky or a bummer. Rather, this is the more ethical and, in the long run, cheaper approach. There is a final irony. The more Western elites ignore their own laws, allow unassimilated ethnic ghettos and profit from an exploitive labor market, the more their own nations will begin to resemble the very places immigrants fled from.}}}
Like I was saying.

{{{It’s tempting to ask how FDR would have dealt with a Congress debating whether to withdraw the 101st Airborne from Bastogne after the first days of the Battle of the Bulge, or the Marines from Guadalcanal because the slogging was hard. Frederick Kagan poses the question another way in the Weekly Standard: “To imagine that America can lose in Iraq but prevail in the war against jihadism is almost like imagining that we could have yielded Europe to the Nazis but won World War II.”}}}
He would have told Congress to STFU just like he did with the Chicago “news” papers.

{{{Today, hundreds of millions of people — mostly African children under 5 — get seriously ill and more than a million die every year from malaria in large measure because many nations stopped using DDT. Rachel Carson (author of “Silent Spring”) was wrong — and millions continue to pay the price. Why should anyone honor that legacy?}}}
When liberals start with the junk science two things are going to happen for sure, 1 is the lib will get some pinko award and showered with lib accolades and 2 is that millions of children will die.
Why is Rachel Carson not a pariah, why is her name not synonomous with Hitler’s?
Why are the libs honoring her???
Is millions upon millions of dead African children some kind of liberal achievement?
WTF?

{{{The Connecticut Republicans, down to one seat in Congress after 2006 election losses, cheered when Fred Thompson told them: “I think the biggest problem we have today is what I believe is the disconnect between Washington, D.C., and the people of the United States. People are looking around at the pork barrel spending and the petty politics, the backbiting.}}}

President Bush said yesterday he fears that the backlash against immigration being incited by opponents of his legalization proposal could result in the nation losing its soul. His comments came in an intense interview aboard Air Force One with McClatchy Newspapers. “I’m deeply concerned about America losing its soul,” Bush said. “Immigration has been the lifeblood of a lot of our country’s history.” He added: “If we don’t solve the problem it’s going to affect America. It will affect our economy and it will affect our soul.

{{{Hence liberals’ hostility to school choice programs that challenge public education’s semi-monopoly. Hence hostility to private accounts funded by a portion of each individual’s Social Security taxes. Hence their fear of Health Savings Accounts (individuals who purchase high-deductible health insurance become eligible for tax-preferred savings accounts from which they pay their routine medical expenses — just as car owners do not buy automobile insurance to cover oil changes). Hence liberals’ advocacy of government responsibility for — and, inevitably, rationing of — health care, which is 16 percent of the economy, and rising.}}}
Isn’t it just jaw dropping to listen to libs like Dhimmi Danny and al-Gitmo whine and shriek about the federal deficit, when it is the democrats that are spending all of the money?
The two biggest budget reducing measures out there would be to 1) kill the IRS like a mangy dog in the street, blow up that massive complex in downtown Washington DC, and 2) reform Social Security, why do billionaires like Clinton and Kennedy need retirement payments, huh, huh?
If you were to propose either of these massive cost savings, the libs would fall on their swords and go 24/7 ballistic, pulling out all of their hair and screaming, oh, the screaming.
So what the F is Dhimmi Danny and al-Gitmo talking about?
Geez.

Vinod Gupta heads infoUSA, a “list broker” that has been selling the names of elderly Americans to known con artists. In 2002, he flew the Clintons to a vacation in Acapulco on the company jet. The Omaha-based enterprise subsequently paid Bill Clinton more than $2 million in consulting fees. Gupta gave $1 million to his foundation.
The concern goes beyond the Clintons’ decision to consort with such questionable personalities. That they would do it so openly magnifies long-festering discomfort over their judgment.
One recalls the dark days of the Lewinsky scandal, when people like me worked their darndest to drag Bill over the finish line of his last four years. We were not about to let the Republican leadership use a sex scandal as a pretense to overturn an election.
But then what does Clinton do? In his last hours on the job he pardons Marc Rich, a fugitive moneybags charged with more than 50 counts of fraud, racketeering and tax evasion. This was done unblushingly and without concern for how it might reflect on Hillary, whose political career was just taking off.
Geez.

Thanks for the response. I oftentimes do not understand if you’re trying to make a point - I read the headlines and think “and? so?”
I look at the bill and think “what’s the alternative?” The people are here, I don’t think our courts can really handle “capturing and punishing” 12-14 million people” - it’d take a long, long time. The alternative is to reject the bill, which means doing nothing on the topic (again) while the problem continues to worsen.
It’s all fine to hold out for a “pure” piece of legislation, but that will neve happen on this subject. Anything we get is going to contain elements with which people will strongly object. I’m for passing it, then introducing subsequent legislation to modify it as the situation warrants.
Lots of talk about punishing the illegal aliens (according to a certain editorial writer in SF, that makes me a racist because I didn’t use the term “undocumented worker.” Oh, well) as well as fining those who hire them. Well, heck, let’s deploy local police (if the politicians refuse, yank their Federal funds) to cruise the neighborhoods, checking all the lawn care companies, and arresting homeowners as well. We could also go after all the road construction companies - pick your favorite stretch of roadway being widened, expanded, resurfaced - and shut down the whole project. Then arrest the local government contracting personnel who awarded the contract - they didn’t perform due diligence in making sure the company complied with law.
Not serious, of course. Except maybe for arresting homeowners. Point is, people may talk about “enforcement” - but to do it completely, universally, would cause an uproar. Rather like being for enforcing the law and arresting the violators - like the people on the freeway who don’t understand the meaning of the word “limit” in “speed limit.”

LuckoDork @8:06 (prior thread)- JFK started it, LBJ escalated and the abandoned it, the Tet offensive was in 1968 while LBJ was still president and Walter “Jackas-s” Konkrite declared defeat after a total stunning victory by the Americans, what did you expect Nixon to do, flee from the battlefield? You own Vietnam. Losers.
Sorry, Dork, but the window was open when I posted last night after returning from an evening out. Didn’t pay attention to the hour.
As usual, you got the start of the Vietnam conflict ‘Bass-Ackwards’, too. The first American advisors were deployed by Truman(D) in 1950 to assist the French in their efforts at pacifying their wayward colony.
Remember that Ho Chi Minh was a stalwart ally of America during WWII. We would’ve had a hard row to hoe if Ho not been our point man in Indochina during the war. After the war was over, Allied forces betrayed Ho by not giving Vietnam its’ autonomy. The Frogs wanted to exploit its third world resources and they had more clout so the rest of the allies went along. In response, Ho began his people’s revolution.
Eisenhower(R) continued Trumans low level advisory support, JFK in cold war fervor escalated the troop strength to around 15,000 but it was LBJ that capitalized politically off the conflict and dramatically escalated troop deployment. He was forced to abandon any thought of re-election for his effort and his VP, Humphrey, had his head handed to him at the polls by Nixon whose sole campaign pledge was to end the war.
You really should try to learn a little something about history before popping off with more verbal diarrhea. The Vietnam debacle did not belong to the Democrats, it belonged to both parties pretty much equally. Too bad that historical fact gets in the way of your carefully constructed world view but you don’t get to rewrite history just because it is inconvenient to your prejudices.
I find it even more curious that you deride Cronkite for his scathing attacks on the Democratic Johnson administration. Hell, I thought you liked Republicans and were all for allowing them to call attention to the failings of their Democratic rivals. Can’t you make up your mind who to hate?

Gary Larson - did “The Far Side” was interviewed once, interviewer showed him a cartoon he’d done and said he couldn’t figure it out. Larson said “I had a deadline, they wanted a cartoon, they got a cartoon.” Makes sense to me -

Do you really want to invoke a public sharing ethos as the Kennedy legacy while deriding Bush as spoiled, arrogant, etcetera? One can easily point to numerous examples of “spoiled, arrogant” behavior from the Kennedys - from the “build an empire through breaking the law” of patriarch Joseph - to his and his sons’ involvement with organized crime (so strong at one point the senior Kennedy had a contract on his life - which was removed in a deal he made with Sam Giancana of Chicago) - to the sons’ behaviors, as well as the scandals with the Kennedy cousins, nephews, etc over the years.
No, I’m not bashing one family to excuse another. Just saying opening the door to “this family has kids who are really great and this family has bums” makes for introducing really unpleasant history - much of which has nothing to do with today’s reality except character assassination.
Now maybe if both families would break up their trusts, pay income taxes on the value of the assets the first year, count future increases as ordinary income subject to taxes - I’d take all this table-thumping about “fairness” and “tax the rich” a little more seriously.
Back-Asswards 9:32 There is a (documented) school of thought that Kennedy seriously questioned the military objectives presented to him and was preparing to draw down the advisors. Although there was Republican involvement, it’s pretty well accepted Pres Johnson made the decision to greatly expand - not withdraw - so it was recognized as “his” war.
Regarding Nixon: the lesson for today is electing someone who uses as a campaign slogan “secret plan to end the war.” I believe about half our casualties occurred after he was elected.

Paul- Ever pull duty at Carlisle. You sound like alumni.
Think you hit the nail on the head with the lesson for today.
I agree that Johnson should get the blame for most culpability in the Vietnam foofarah, but in truth it was Truman who started our involvment. Given the circumstances of the immediate post WWII times, and his great stewardship of the country during the war, he might be given some slack .
The flip side of the coin is that Nixon(R) and his Secretary of State, Henry Kissasser, were the ‘surrender monkeys’ of 30 years past. Never had the pleasure. I just like to read a lot. I’m just a 25-year-old wise guy (this is a blog, we can be whatever we want, right?).
There was a lot going on then, as you pointed out. Post-WWII hegemony. Belief in dangers of communist expansion and the domino theory. Discounting the prominence of nationalism in former colonial countries.
There was a good movie a few years ago - Mel Gibson in They Were Soldiers - based on the life of Col Hal Moore - said to be the father of many AirCav tactics. Long and bloody fight - few hundred Americans against a couple thousand North Vietnamese. In the end NVA overwhelmed by superior firepower and new technology. At the end of the movie the NVA commander says the tragedy is the Americans think they one a great victory. They will continue to fight, but the end will still be the same while thousands more die.

Somewhere in all those stacks you’ll find the “Communist Manifesto” ml. It’ll have Hillary’s picture in it somewhere. What was it she said recently in a speech?
(((Clinton told the students that the Bush Administration promoted an “ownership” society. She implied in her remarks that ownership is not something that should be promoted, but rather fairness brought about by government regulation and policies.)))
(((This is the type of society that failed under the Soviet Union and even Communist China has abandoned these “FROM EACH ACCORDING TO HIS ABILITY, TO EACH ACCORDING TO HIS NEED” philosophies of Karl Marx. Americans are a free people, but they won’t be if Hillary Clinton has her way.)))
I never thought I’d hear her say it “outright”.

Still going to radical blogs for news analysis? I went to the DailyKos site - read through the 24 comments, all in the vein of “I never listen to BOR but.. Repubs are knuckledraggers… I didn’t see the episode… more religious maniacs…”
That’s analysis?
What happened was Boulder HS students were sent to a mandatory assembly, where speakers advocated they do drugs, told them to experiment with same sex or group sex, etc. Parents weren’t notified. Nor would school officials initially address parents’ concerns.
After a similar event one parent read a transcript to school board officials, who told her to stop reading because the language was inappropriate. It was the language of the speakers at her daughter’s assembly!
If you think that’s okay for a school to do, fine. But the least you could do, or the sources you cite, would be to list the facts of the case. Namecalling and false outrage are not adequate responses.
Here’s a non-direct source, non-BOR take on it from WorldNetDaily:

As a dedicated Republican I can assure you that WE don’t experiment with drugs. Nor do we enjoy having sex. According to the Bible sex is strictly for having children. Cute. Many will. But the issue is school responsibility vs parents’ rights. Is it right for schools to not inform parents when outside, controversial speakers are brought in? Is it right for schools to advocate personal, moral conduct at variance with parental teachings? Those are the issues. I believe BOR even said if that’s what the citizens of Boulder want, then fine. But he’d heard from enough parents who didn’t like being shut out by the administrators.

I would certainly want to know ANY speaker that is coming to my child’s school. I read the article you sent Paul, and I can see the speaker’s point, that if you are going to experiment, then do it wisely, but I can definitely see how that would get parents fired up.
I certainly would have wanted to know if that particular speaker was coming to my kids’ school.
But on the flip side, I would also want to know if some Bible-banging, fundamentalist, “you are all going to hell” type speaker was coming as well, and believe me, in the area I live in, that is a perfectly plausible concern.
Many times, people are blinded by the more broad issue like you said, school responsibility vs. parents’ rights. It’s easy to see this as a “sex” issue when the more pressing matter is that the parent’s were completely shut out of this process.

You’d get speakers like that in your local schools?!!? I’m of the opinion that, too, it totally inappropriate.
I saw the segment - it wasn’t just a “do it wisely” - it was “do it. Go ahead with opposite sex, same sex, group - whatever you want. I am here today to encourage you to do drugs and have sex. Ecstasy will enhance the experience. I know shrinks who do sessions on Ecstasy. If I had some I’d be on it now.”
Typical some here don’t address the issues at all - instead make it a “Repubs deny kids have sex, the reporter’s a jerk, Repubs are Bible thumpers, etc ad nauseum.” But at least it’s a clever way to avoid an issue.

And of COURSE you know this because Sam G wrote a Tell-All book to confirm it!! NO?! Well where DID you get yoru source from?

Methinks you could do much better than to hold the Kennedys up as examples or moral, virtuous, selfless examples for other rich, dynastic families to emulate.
Remember Maria Shriver’s comment about when she brought Arnold home to meet momma and the clan? Momma told her she’d had her fun, now get with someone more appropriate (foreign, Austrian, bodybuilder). She said she went right back to CA and married him. Good for her for rejecting the expected family values.
BTW - lots of sources about Mob influence and interaction with the Kennedys (Mostly Dad, also Jack and Bobby). How do you think they ever got introduced to Marilyn, anyhow? Heck, you can even check Congressional hearing records. Fascinating reading.

Kerry talked with several potential picks, including Gephardt and Edwards. He was comfortable after his conversations with Gephardt, but even queasier about Edwards after they met. Edwards had told Kerry he was going to share a story with him that he’d never told anyone else—that after his son Wade had been killed, he climbed onto the slab at the funeral home, laid there and hugged his body, and promised that he’d do all he could to make life better for people, to live up to Wade’s ideals of service. Kerry was stunned, not moved, because, as he told me later, Edwards had recounted the same exact story to him, almost in the exact same words, a year or two before—and with the same preface, that he’d never shared the memory with anyone else.

Here is a little history on lazy Fred:
“In the Washington world of workaholics, Fred is remembered as a virtual teetotaler. During his eight years in the U.S. Senate, an insertion into the Congressional Record amounted to heavy lifting.
His high school yearbook sized him up early: “The lazier a man is, the more he plans to do.”
Sliding back and forth between the fantasy worlds of the silver screen and politics is nothing new for him.
Back in 1992, the Gucci loafers, Lincoln Continental and high-dollar lobbying fees of Fred D. Thompson, Esquire, weren’t playing too well at the political box office in Tennessee. So, he bought an old red pickup and a pair of $100 boots, tuned up the drawl and beat a Harvard man for the Senate in Big Orange country.”
Just a good ole boy.

Sure I have. As I understand it, the family fortune was made by Daddy Bush in the west Texas oil fields. I believe he used a lot of his savings, pretty much lived out of his car for a while. Don’t know of any big irregularities in the wealth acquisition, but it wouldn’t surprise me. It’s pretty typical that the younger generation goes pretty nutty with the money.
Again, it’s not a political party issue. Most such families have members who are embarrassments. But the import for a political campaign is nil (waiting for the “what about character chorus” to begin…)
True for the earlier (30s-early60s) generation. They didn’t even have a name for the “organization” - thank Hoover and the government for that. Those guys were like carbon copies of Saddam and his sons - same pathologies. But there was a lot of gov’t interaction which led to the earlier disclosures. Progress is today such “secrets” would be nearly impossible.

Bob Shrum may put his foot in his big mouth from time-to-time, but everyone raise your hand if you prefer having Dick Morris as a pol-consultant for your party:
Last night on Hannity and Colmes, right-wing pundit Dick Morris also claimed that we need to keep U.S. troops in Iraq so that terrorists don’t come to the United States. But he argued that we need to put “Americans right within their [terrorists’] arms’ reach” so that they have the opportunity to “kill Americans” there. He added that therefore, “they don’t have to come to Wall Street to kill Americans. They don’t have to knock down the Trade Center. They can do it around the corner, and convenience is a big factor when you’re a terrorist.”
So close, those two…

Joe reported no yellow cake uranium link between Iraq and Niger, Bush had to punish Joe. So, Bush revealed that Valerie Plame was a covert CIA Agent! There’s your Bush! Rat Bush had to hurt Joe Wilson. Bush learned from Lee Atwater. There’s our president. History will remember Bush.

WASHINGTON - The economy nearly stalled in the first quarter with growth slowing to a pace of just 0.6 percent. That was the worst three-month showing in over four years.
With $3.25/gal gas what would you expect. And why is it $3.25/gal? Could the fact that Iraq has been taken out of production have anything to do with it? Another ‘Mission Accomplished’ for Boy George.

In the Ashcroft Gambit, Bush dispatched lackeys Gonzales and Card to the hospital bed of an ailing John Ashcroft. Mrs. Ashcroft had asked no visitors attend her very ill husband. Bush wanted Ashcroft to sign an illegal order on surveillance of American citizens. Mrs. Ashcroft, a loyal American, called her husbands deputy when she learned of the late night Bush larceny. Fortunately, “Iago and Judas” were intercepted. The Bush gambit failed. There’s our president, once again. Shoving legal papers in the face of a very sick man.

In the caging of the votes of Black Servicemen and women Bush finds his apotheosis. In the last election, Bush identified Black Servicemen and women. He then sent letters to their home addresses. Some of the letters were returned. Those were sent to the republican party. When those Servicemen and women voted their votes were challenged by republicans and cancelled! This is called caging. It is illegal. Monica Goodling testified to the caging of votes in her testimony before Congress. This is why she sought immunity. John Conyers has this. Perhaps Bush will have Albert Gonzales investigate this on behalf of the American people? Bush scandals eclipse one another. This has legs.

[[raise your hand if you prefer having Dick Morris as a pol-consultant for your party]]
Bill Clinton raised his hand, several times. Called him back in after a couple of debacles, as a matter of fact. He ain’t 100 percent - but he nails it sometimes (his column on the Democrat’s coming problems over the Iraq funding bill, for instance. Even some very pro-Democratic (guessing) bloggers here reacted just as he predicted.
I once heard him in an interview, the interviewer kept pressing a point, Morris responded with “you’re asking me about what’s right. I’m telling you what to do politically.”
That’s it in a nutshell.
Daniel 1:32 1:43 Old news. Beat to death. Surely you can find something more current?
Midori 1:39
Okay, you saw through that. It’s dog years.
You’re right about the indoctrination, though. When you’re raised in a free-thinking, progressive household where you’re taught to challenge every assumption, reason though an argument and treat all labels with suspicion it rather affects one’s outlook.
RW-(the original 1:40) (Have you ever heard of Richard Armitage?)
I have! Isn’t he the guy Fitzgerald prosecuted and indicted for telling Novak Plame was a CIA employee? Wait, wait, that wasn’t a crime under statute. I know!! Fitzgerald prosecuted and indicted Joseph Wilson for then going to a Washington blogger and broadcasting to the world that not only was she a CIA agent, she was also a covert agent!!!! Right?
I can’t figure it out, though. The Bush Administration can’t keep this conspiracy a secret but they can keep secret that they knew Islamists were going to hit the World Trade Center on 9-11 and they kept quiet so thousands of Americans would die and they could invade Iraq for their oil. And they’ve kept the names of the hundreds of conspirators quiet all these years. Well, I’m sure some here will tell us how Pres Bush is so smart to have pulled that off.

[[[WASHINGTON - The Bush administration said Tuesday it will fight to keep meatpackers from testing all their animals for mad cow disease.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture tests less than 1 percent of slaughtered cows for the disease, which can be fatal to humans who eat tainted beef. But Arkansas City-based Creekstone Farms Premium Beef wants to test all of its cows.
Larger meat companies feared that move because, if Creekstone tested its meat and advertised it as safe, they might have to perform the expensive test, too.[..]
The Agriculture Department argued that widespread testing could lead to a false positive that would harm the meat industry. U.S. District Judge James Robertson noted that Creekstone sought to use the same test the government relies on and said the government didn’t have the authority to restrict it.]]]
Nice to see that the Feds’ biggest concern is not the citizens, but false positives hurting the meat industry.

Getalife,
We’d vote for a guy who was sodomizing goats if he did it with a Bible in his hand. Whether you HAVE family values is irrelevant. It’s whether you give lip service to them that matters. Haven’t you been paying attention? Its just like military service. It isn’t whether or not you fought, it is only important that you act like you would. Why else would we elect Cheney who asked for and received five deferments? Obviously he wussed when he had the chance but he looks mean, talks tough and he likes shooting small animals. That’s enough for me.
Another example of right-wing hypocrisy is our criticism of Hollywood elites. We criticize them at every turn and then elect as many as possible while the left elects zero. My personal favorite inconsistency is our criticism of “left-wing media.” Our response: produce the most biased cable news and talk radio shows known to man and discuss, therein, “left-wing media bias.” I just love it when the NYT says something bad about a Republican: “well what do you expect they are known as abiased media outlet?” The same paper says something bad about a Dem: “Its must be true, why else would the NYT say it, given their bias?” It’s an amazingly clever racket we’ve got and we’ve got millions of idiots eating it up.

Luck,
I agree. The dems are dumb. They don’t have one candidate who takes the Bible as the literal word of God and we’ve got what, three candidates who are smart enough to know that the story of Genesis is absolute fact. I know that you will agree that the world is in fact only around 6,000 years old and that scientists who say otherwise are part of a Satanic conspiracy to take God out of our public lives. Only the real smart people know that and they are all Republicans like us, right?

Hmmm….Dusty, so we are in Iraq for freedom and peace. I honestly thought you were going to say to fight the Islamofascists or something equally as lame.
Dusty, we won the war in Iraq about three years ago, when we ousted Saddam, because isn’t that what we went in there for? Get rid of the big bad dictator because he had WMD?
My question now is why the hell are we still there?
I think if given the chance, there isn’t a U.S. soldier in Iraq right now who wouldn’t come home, or better yet, if given the chance, have the opportunity to be transferred to the Afghanistan front.
You must not have ever met a woman who is in the military, or know what the word “feminism” means. The women I’ve met who are in the military could whip my a* hands down. That’s it, you just don’t know what feminism means.

I thank feminism and feminists every day. And Dusty, so should you.
I got to use birth control, so I did not have to have 1 child every 18 months till I died young and worn out.
I got to go to high school and university, rather than be married/sold off when I started menstrating.
I got to enter the profession of my choice.
I got to vote.
I could run for office.
I can own property in my own right.
I got to pick my own husband.
My daughters are as valuable as my sons.
My husband cannot “discipline” me. (He’d have to catch me first!)
Do you want to turn back the clock on any of these things?
One difference between you and I Dusty is that I require that ALL men I deal with respect me. Much to my delight, they live up to my high expectations and I respect them right back.

Bosch,
Isn’t it obvious why we are there? We are there because it is clear that Iraq is in worse shape than before and even a greater potential threat. This gives us an excuse to stay there for years fighting “evil doers” and making billions for our friendly campaign donating contractors. In addition, you can’t justify the invasion in the eyes of the American people if you leave a bigger mess than you found. You’ve got to run out the clock and blame the mess on the next guy, or Congress. Just like ‘Nam. Remember this diddy: “we were just so close to victory and then the dems cut off funding. Damn shame.” LOL. We’ve ran on that load of crap for decades. Same play here.
Further, our guys get to be within easy range of the Iranians who we are just wishing would “make our day” by killing a bunch of our troops so that we can use all this hardware we’ve bought kill more brown people and make even more money.

I thought the Presidency was the biggest power trip of all? Well, you got me thinking. I suppose one could say Coulter is intentionally provocative to make money. Dean - well, he’s provocative. Not always intentionally, and with the exception of his “I hate Republicans” some of his comments are worth reflecting upon. Such as:
The fact is that we wouldn’t be in Iraq if it weren’t for Democrats like Senator Kerry. (Yup)
Someone earlier made a remark about losing 500 soldiers and 2,200 wounded in Iraq. Those soldiers were sent there by the vote of… Sen. Edwards and Sen. Kerry. I think that is a serious matter. (Yup, again)
I have my warts. I sometimes say things that get me in trouble. In other words, I lead with my heart and not my head. That’s the only chance we have against George Bush. (Policy by emotion. Hmmmmm).
We have to say what we believe… whether it’s popular or not. (Hillary? Your war vote? Hillary?)
I still want to be the candidate for guys with Confederate flags in their pickup trucks. We can’t beat George Bush unless we appeal to a broad cross-section of Democrats. (those guys are Democrats?!!? And here I thought they were all neocon racist Republicans?) (Goldie: your 4:32?)
Real Democrats don’t make promises they can’t keep.” (Are there any “real Democrats”? Pelosi? Reed? War funding? Real Security? Hello?)

Luck,
I didn’t have to be there. All I have to do is read the revealed word of God to know the truth. And stop splitting hairs. You seem to suggest that you can reject the Bible and still believe in God. That reminds of the people who believe in and God AND evolution. You can’t have it both ways. This is a black and white world. You are either for us or against us. You either go to heaven or to hell. You either believe in Genesis or you are a heathen just like those who believe that God and Darwin can be reconciled.
But back to the original point. Smart people like those in the majority of the GOP understand the literal word of God and reject evelotution or any of your other alternative anti-God theories, Mr. Darwin-light. That is why the members of the GOP are so smart and had the wisdom to elect a man as wise as George Bush, twice.

Seriously, thanks. I still don’t remember all the long-standing interactions here. So let me say my 5:10 didn’t apply to you -
I say Ms Geyer’s column this morning. Gotta say it’s “strange.” But, if you read it without the “wild-eyed” words, it really does change the entire tone. Same with the second example - take out “extended whine, a rant” and what do you have? Another politician monopolizing the conversation to make his points.
Sen Dodd was on Letterman a couple nights ago - discussion about his “extended” discussions - it was all humorous. Of course, Letterman didn’t refer to Dodd’s “rants.” I’m always a bit suspicious when opinion adverbs or adjectives are implied as facts - especially when rereading the text without the words doesn’t give the same message.
Again, not defending the Pres here - just a discussion about the impact of certain words in pushing perceptions.

Paul @ 5:10,
I am accustomed to the potty level of brain “smarts’ on this blog. So their remarks do not surprise me one bit. Kinda “forgive them for they know not what they talk about” sort of thing.
My husband and I, both professionals, have learned to think for ourselves. We work as a team at home, even when one is on the other side of the country from the other at times.
We both grew up in an environment where no one had to be”taught” to have respect for others, male or female. Our parents showed us by example.
My family through many generations has fought for this country. I love the USA and am most thankful for my good fortune to be here.

Yours sounds like a rewarding partnership. Congrats. I must say, though, that “example” is teaching. The best kind.
My mom just gave me my dad’s medals, insignia, etc from WWII. I wrote my Congressman (his didn’t respond) and got a flag flown over the Capitol and a certificate of appreciation. They’re all going in a glass-front box and the family will get together and present it to him for Father’s Day.
My wife just came in from work - quite emotional - interview at lunch on NPR with Martha Raddatz, journalist who’s been to Iraq 12 times, just wrote the book “The Long Road Home” about the battle for Sadr City. She related how the bodies of the killed servicement were kept in a refrigerated unit pending shipment home, and how the commander, every morning before going out on another mission, would go inside the unit, touch each one, talk to each one, and tell them how sorry he was. By that time my wife couldn’t talk much - but I thought you might want to read the book.

I think it’s a patriotic duty to point out here that there is no credible blogging support for W (or the right) left on the internetz.
The raving drools and smudge-wits who cling to neo-bonic promises of mission accomplished in Iraq prove only that Pathos is not pretty. (indeed it’s a damn shame).
What is the mission of US troops in Iraq? The horrible realization that dawns on America is that there never was a mission. They are there because Cheney’s defense industry cronies insisted they be there, cause it’s just too profitable.
No mission. No scenario for withdrawal. No secret conspiracy or grand plan for evil domination of the world….just a human being who screwed up and, like the accidents that litter history books with catastrophic consequences, our unlikely president, (gore won, ditto Kerry), is the wrong man invading the wrong country at the worst possible time, and now we’ve the devil to pay. This accident of history which uncorked the ancient enmities need never have happened. It’s bad folks. It’s real bad. And there’s nothing that can save us, unless the arabs decide that 10K years of feuding is enough and cooler heads finally prevail, sure, that could happen!
The entire USA is now on double secret probation by every other country. It’s us against the world now, and all we’ve got on our side is Murphy, Rube Goldberg, and whoever Peter is.

{{{“The events of the past two days are promising developments. Sunni citizens of Amariyah that have been previously terrorized by al-Qaida are now resisting and want them gone. They’re tired of the intimidation that included the murder of women,” Kuehl said. A U.S. military officer, who agreed to discuss the fight only if not quoted by name because the information was not for release, said the Army was checking reports of a big al-Qaida enclave in Amariyah housing foreign fighters, including Afghans, doing temporary duty in Iraq. U.S.-funded Alhurra television reported that non-Iraqi Arabs and Afghans were among the fighters over the past two days. Casualty figures were not immediately available. But the district councilman said the al-Qaida leader in Amariyah, known as Haji Hameed, was killed and 45 other fighters were detained.}}}
