Let’s start the day with a quote from Trent Lott:

LOTT: I think they’ve made a mistake by [invoking executive privilege]. I think it will damage the credibility. It looks like they are hiding something, so I think they shouldn’t have done it. I think it’s an improper use, and the courts will have to decide whether or not that’s a proper use. And it may wind up in the Supreme Court, like it did in the Watergate matter.

Of course, he made this statement regarding a previous administration.

But it holds so very true now.

I want Gonzales to testify, in open session under oath.

The American people have witnessed the Democrats “foaming at the mouth” everytime they smell Republican blood for the last 6 years.

Will anyone question why Hillary made this statement while calling for an investigation of Bush’s executive privelege?

She conceded that should she win the presidency in 2008, she likely would replace all of the U.S. attorneys appointed by President Bush. She said that’s merely following traditions in which presidents appoint prosecutors of their own party.

Bill Clinton replaced the Attorney Generals at the start of his term, those who were appointed by the previous administration which is the usual. Bush tried to replace the ones appointed by his administration when they did not follow the party line as dictated by him and his people. When they did not drop cases that were not of their liking and not convict people that they thought should be.

Sure Clinton purged his roles of US Attorneys. But he did not purge select attorneys because they were investigating members of his own party and he did not have his AG lie about it. This administration can’t get out of bed in the morning without lying about it. And THAT is the problem!

EVEN BIGGIE RAT MAY BE LEAVING THE SINKING SHIP

Bob Novak noted it in his column today:

The word most often used by Republicans to describe the management of the Justice Department under Gonzales is “incompetent.” … The I-word (incompetence) is also used by Republicans in describing the Bush administration generally. Several of them I talked to cited a trifecta of incompetence: the Walter Reed hospital scandal, the FBI’s misuse of the USA Patriot Act and the U.S. attorneys firing fiasco. “We always have claimed that we were the party of better management,” one House leader told me. “How can we claim that anymore?” […]

The answer that is not entertained by the president’s most severe GOP critics, even when not speaking for quotation, is that this is just the governing style of George W. Bush and will not change while he is in the Oval Office

What is really astounding is the utter stupidity of those who keep saying that the issue is simply the firing of the Attorneys General. In fact, the cause of the controversy is due to the reasons for firing these people. They were fired because they weren’t jumping to the demands of the administration. Then the problem was exacerbated by Gonzales lying to Congress. Add to that the appointments that Gonzales said would be subject to review by the Senate, and weren’t and you get controversy.

But there are those who will continue to wear the “stupid” sign on their foreheads while trying to defend the actions of the incompetent.

After watching various commentary programs, listening to NPR and Sean Hannity, and even lowering myself to watch the Communist and Nazi Network and reading the AJC and the NYTimes, I have come to the firm conclusion that no one has even come close to alleging a crime was committed in firing these eight prosecutors.

DID YOU READ ONLY THE CAR ADS AND SPORTS IN THE NYT ON 3/19?

TRY THIS:

Misrepresentations to Congress. The relevant provision, 18 U.S.C. § 1505

OR THIS

Calling the Prosecutors. As part of the Sarbanes-Oxley reforms, Congress passed an extremely broad obstruction of justice provision, 18 U.S.C. § 1512 (c),

OR THIS

Witness Tampering. 18 U.S.C. § 1512

OR THIS

Firing the Attorneys. United States attorneys can be fired whenever a president wants, but not, as § 1512 (c) puts it,

AND SUMS UP

It is far too soon to say that anyone committed a crime, and it may well be that no one has. But if this were a law school issue spotter, any student who could not identify any laws that may have been broken would get an “F.”

A small growth was discovered last year in his lower right pelvic area, and it was removed on Monday. Doctors determined that it was cancerous, and that his cancer had metastasized, or spread, to his liver, White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said.

You can fool the American people for awhile but you just can never fool God. Snow must have a little conscience left, so the maker is calling his marker now instead of waiting til he is standin fore the pearly gates. Bush, Cheney, Rice, Gonzales and the rest of the criminal cabal probably won’t get notice like Tony Snow has, they’re on an express ride to hell!

Getalife:

I’m not finding anything in the news that Tony Snow has liver cancer. When I googled “Tony Snow+liver cancer” some “liberal” blog comments came up at HaloScan.

“Tony Snow to have growth removed… So the hemorrhoid says to the Doctor, “Doc can you do something about this a***** I’m stuck to?”

There’s quite a bit of “liberal compassion” displayed for Tony there.

Now I’m definitely out of here until later.

{{DDR, That is called a “fishing expedition”. Either they have evidence that a law was broken or they don’t.}}

That’s what we do in this country. Ever heard of a Grand Jury? A DA calls a grand jury when he doesn’t have sufficient amount of proof to go to trial. The primary function of the modern grand jury is to review the evidence presented by the prosecutor and determine whether there is probable cause to return an indictment. The grand jury hears only cases brought to it by the prosecutor. That’s “fishing” with style.

Bi-Danish,

While many think that there were illegal acts involved in the firing of some of the Attorneys General, it would be unlikely for Gonzales to investigate himself or his minions. Therefore it is up to Congress to determine if there was anything wrong with what was done.

A brief quote from the link: “If the firings of these eight U.S. Attorneys were motivated by partisan electoral goals, and it appears at the very least that the firings of Iglesias and McKay fall into this category, then these firings are an abuse of the power to choose federal prosecutors and, more importantly, seriously undermine law enforcement.”

As far as beef tips, I believe it was Paul who remarked that he was having beef tips. I suppose you enjoy a nice bottle of Arbor Mist with your Alpo kidneys and rice with gravy.

The VietNam Veteran’s Memorial Wall also has a couple of dramatic sculptures in addition to the names of US casualties.

So I was thinking about the D.C. memorial for the US casualties in the latest Iraq War. In addition to having the names there would be a statue of Dick Cheney aiming a shotgun at birds and another showing George Bush fishing off Kennebunkport. It is important to know what our leaders were doing while our soldiers were fighting and dying for them.

WASHINGTON - Teams assigned to make sure foreigners ordered out of the United States actually leave are grappling with a backlog of more than 600,000 cases and can’t accurately account for the fugitives’ whereabouts, the government reported Monday.

This is what happens when your government thinks it can ‘fight them over there so it doesn’t have to fight them here’. Then, your government doesn’t have the resources to fight them here at all cause all its resouces have been p** away in Iraq.

As we can now see, the terrorists are comin over here in spite of the fact that our fighting troops are stuck over there! All Bush did in the Middle East is stir up the hornets nest so they’ll end up coming over here for spite and revenge. Once again, King George got it bass-ackwards.

Don’t it make ya feel all warm n cozy knowin that there are 600,000 potential terrorists floating around America and NOT ONE OF THEM CAN BE ACCOUNTED FOR. I’m sorry to hear that Tony Snow’s cancer has returned and that it apparently has spread to his liver (CNN). He is a class act who has taken on the backbreaking job of explaining and defending the policies of an unexplainable and indefensible administration. He never should have attempted this task so soon after his treatment for the original colon cancer.

All this shows how Dumbya and his corrupt cronies just use people up and spit them out when they’re done with them. If it ain’t our youth over in the mideast, its their own people.

Now the issue in this case is were these USA’s fired for political gain. Which if you read any article will show you they were. Most of the emails from the WH to Alberto and Harriett show they wanted nothing but Attorneys loyal to both Bush and the GOP. Night Train- You have only remembered half of your high school civics class. The USA is a {{{{Democratic}}}} Republic. Big difference, comrade.

In a Republic, all decisions are made by representatives who are not neccesarily elected (see the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics - USSR). In a Democratic Republic, those representatives are elected to their posts by voters.

America has never been a Democracy OR a Republic. We are a hybrid of several governing philosophies that were near and dear to the hearts of Madison and Jefferson. Their true genius was overlaying their hybrided Democratic Republic with a strong system of checks and balances in hopes that their new government would not become oppressive.

You sound like a B&W mentality, typical of neo-thinkers. Unfortunately for you, the real world exists in kodachrome and full technicolor.

BBBB: “…uh…er…”

And that is the crux! Losing what, Bush? Tell us what we would lose if we weren’t in Iraq?

ACTUALLY THIS SOUNDS CLOSER

Symptoms of mania The symptoms of mania, which can last up to three months if untreated, include:

Excessive energy, activity, restlessness, racing thoughts and rapid talking Denial that anything is wrong Extreme “high” or euphoric feelings — a person may feel “on top of the world” and nothing, including bad news or tragic events, can change this “happiness.” Easily irritated or distracted. Decreased need for sleep – an individual may last for days with little or no sleep without feeling tired. Unrealistic beliefs in one’s ability and powers — a person may experience feelings of exaggerated confidence or unwarranted optimism. This can lead to over ambitious work plans and the belief that nothing can stop him or her from accomplishing any task. Uncharacteristically poor judgment — a person may make poor decisions which may lead to unrealistic involvement in activities, meetings and deadlines, reckless driving, spending sprees and foolish business ventures. Sustained period of behavior that is different from usual — a person may dress and/or act differently than he or she usually does, become a collector of various items, become indifferent to personal grooming, become obsessed with writing, or experience delusions. Truthman - as a fellow Journalist -I agree 100% with your opinion of Fox. I left a CBS station 1 week before they became a FOX affiliate and am so glad I did.

Andy watches Faux —even though they are racist =- Yet Andy proclaims WE are the racist!

Clearly Fox suppports Conservative White Male opinions only:

[Special Report continues to overwhelmingly favor white and male guests: As in 2002, only 7 percent of guests were women, and the percentage of people of color rose only slightly, to 11 percent from 7 percent in 2001 and 2002. In 2003, only one woman of color was featured in a one-on-one interview: National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice.]

In politics, a plan by Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki and President Jalal Talabani to introduce legislation to allow former members of Saddam Hussein’s ruling party — including those in the feared security and paramilitary forces — resume jobs in the government or receive pensions met with criticism.

The commission currently carrying out the government’s so-called “de-Baathfication” policy said the draft law ignored victims of the former regime in a highly critical statement, indicating the draft law could face trouble in parliament. “This draft turns a blind eye to the feelings of millions of the victims of Baath Party and pays no heed to their emotions and rights. This will not lead to reconciliation,” the statement said.

Long demanded by the U.S. to appease Iraq’s once-dominant Sunni Arab minority, the measure would set a three-month challenge period after which ex-Baath party loyalists would be immune from legal punishment for their actions during Saddam’s reign.

Let’s see. Republicans told us that the reason for the Iraq invasion was WMDs, no wait they changed that to the Baathtists were dictatorial murdering and raping thugs.

Now those same Republicans do not want any type of Nuremburg trial for those they describe as horrific criminals, so vile that their removal from power justified WAR. Instead they want to give them pensions and their old jobs back!

Republicans have about the same credibility as toe fungus.

Hey getalife, put another NO down in your poll. No damn liberal here at Mikey’s is qualified to diagnose mental illness because you all suffer from it yourselves.

Bush Derangement Syndrome (or BDS) is a loss of the capability for rational thought. This loss is often displayed over a period of hours, days or even months and years. The sufferer in all cases blames President George W. Bush for any and all types of disasters, human maladies, etc. despite abundant evidence of contrary causal effects. BDS is also manifested in many sufferers by a determination to label President Bush as the greatest single threat to democracy and freedom in the United States since the passage of the Alien and Sedition Acts during the presidency of John Adams. Also, closely related, see Karl Rove Syndrome (KRS).

In close relation to the above example, a person who from time to time will comment that Al Gore was really elected in 2000 despite the fact that however anachronistic, the results of the Electoral College determines the result of presidential elections, not the results of the popular vote.

And in yet another related area, any person who insists that in 2000 that voter irregularity in Florida gave that state to Bush and /or in 2004 that voting machines in Ohio were tampered with by the RNC, again to throw the last, critical state over into the Red column.

A person who resolutely insists that hurricane damage is controlled from the White House and is routinely directed towards areas of lower income / high minority population.

Persons who routinely use terms such as “dictator”, “fascist”, “monarchary” or “Generalissimo” when discussing George W. Bush.

Persons who never had any problem with former President Bill Clinton attending Sunday worship services with Bible in hand, but who see in George W. Bush the man who would be Grand Mufti of the USA.

What a bunch of dumbass losers.

All day every frvckin day same old shi-tzo schizos.

On the attorneys:

I think that there is no underlying crime in the case. The president does have the right to remove without cause any attorney they feel they need to. There is a possibility of obstuction of justice if they shutdown ongoing investigations when they change AGs, but the removal is legal.

The problem is the inability to tell the truth. If Gonzales et.al told the truth from the beginning that these firing were done without performance related cause and solely for political reasons, there would have been much contraversy and political discussion, probably calls for hearing on to the reasons, but they would have been protected because what they did may have been seen as unethical, it would not have been illegal.

Instead of taking the political heat, a decision was made to try to hide the plan and who is responsible. This lead to lying to congress. Now everyone involved in this is under legal threat. That is why goodling is pleading the 5th, she believes a crime was commited and needs protection. So the person who believes a crime was committed for all of you out there is the counsel to Al Gonzales

Report Charges Broad White House Efforts to Stifle Climate Research Bush administration officials throughout the government have engaged in White House-directed efforts to stifle, delay or dampen the release of climate change research that casts the White House or its policies in a bad light, says a new report that purports to be the most comprehensive assessment to date of the subject.

Researchers for the non-profit watchdog Government Accountability Project reviewed thousands of e-mails, memos and other documents obtained through Freedom of Information Act requests and from government whistle-blowers and conducted dozens of interviews with public affairs staff, scientists, reporters and others.

The group says it has identified hundreds of instances where White House-appointed officials interfered with government scientists’ efforts to convey their research findings to the public, at the behest of top administration officials.

The report is slated to be released tomorrow at a hearing before the House Science Committee, which is investigating the issue.

THE MYTH OF THE PERMANENT MAJORITY….The Pew survey I linked to yesterday showed some pretty stunning reversals for the Republican Party, and I think it’s worth taking a minute to deconstruct what the numbers show. The party ID catastrophe, in which Republicans have plummeted from a 43-43 tie in 2002 to a 50-35 deficit this year, obviously happened on George Bush’s watch. He’s the least liked president among moderates and young people in over a generation. But the survey also shows something more fundamental: a loss of sympathy for conservative positions, a trend that began well before George Bush ever set foot in the Oval Office.

In a nutshell, what I think happened is this: beginning in the early 90s the Republican Party hitched its wagon to two things: tax cuts and culture war politics. In the short term this worked nicely: people like low taxes and talk radio was pretty successful at keeping cultural conservatives in a constant state of inchoate outrage. George Bush and Karl Rove were this strategy’s ultimate practitioners, and the attacks of 9/11, which they treated as a culture war issue, kept the GOP successful through the first part of this decade.

But in the long term this strategy has been a disaster. Even the wingiest of wingnuts understands that you can’t keep cutting taxes forever, and after 2003 the tax cut jihad simply ran out of steam. There were no more taxes to cut. On the culture war side, as the Pew charts confirm, the problem is that America is getting slowly more culturally liberal as time goes by. Partly this is a generational thing and partly it’s just a continuation of the same slow march of social tolerance that’s been a hallmark of the past half century. Every year there’s one or two percent more of the country that doesn’t hate gays, doesn’t want to ban abortion, and would just as soon see the Ten Commandments stay in church.

Both of these trends are only going to get worse for the GOP. As entitlement benefits grow, taxes are going to have to go up. Everyone knows there’s no way around this, and insisting otherwise will increasingly mark you as a fringe crackpot. Likewise, as culture war issues slowly become the province of a dwindling band of senior citizens and dead-end homophobes, arguing about gays in the military will seem about as relevant as attacking the tin trust.

The GOP isn’t dead, and Democratic victories i

The figure, far higher than any previously disclosed, includes cases investigated by the Army, Navy, CIA and Justice Department. Some 65,000 prisoners have been taken during the U.S.-led wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, although most have been freed.

The Pentagon has never provided comprehensive information on how many prisoners taken during the U.S. wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have died, and the 108 figure is based on information supplied by Army, Navy and other government officials. It includes deaths attributed to natural causes.

BAGHDAD — Two nearly simultaneous truck bombs _ including one detonated by remote control _ ripped through markets in Tal Afar on Tuesday, killing at least 48 people and wounding dozens, police said, as violence surged outside the Iraqi capital.

A suicide car bomber exploded his payload near Ramadi, killing 10 people, and another attacker detonated his explosives-laden car near a police patrol in Baqouba, killing two policemen.

The attacks in Tal Afar, the second in four days, occurred about five minutes apart at popular markets in the northern and central parts of the city, 260 miles northwest of Baghdad.

At least 48 people were killed and 103 wounded, police Brig. Abdul Karim al-Jubouri said.

NOW WHAT?

YOUR GOVERNMENT AT WORK Embattled AG now accused in teen sex scandal ‘cover-up’ Attorney General Gonzales among officials who allegedly ignored abuse of minor boys. By Jerome R. Corsi © 2007 WorldNetDaily.com Attorney General Alberto Gonzales and U.S. Attorney Johnny Sutton, both already under siege for other matters, are now being accused of failing to prosecute officers of the Texas Youth Commission after a Texas Ranger investigation documented that guards and administrators were sexually abusing the institution’s teenage boy inmates.

Among the charges in the Texas Ranger report were that administrators would rouse boys from their sleep for the purpose of conducting all-night sex parties.

Ray Brookins, one of the officials named in the report, was a Texas prison guard before being hired at the youth commission school. As a prison guard, Brookins had a history of disciplinary and petty criminal records dating back 21 years. He retained his job despite charges of using pornography on the job, including viewing nude photos of men and women on state computers.

The Texas Youth Comission controversy traces back to a criminal investigation conducted in 2005 by Texas Ranger Brian Burzynski. The investigation revealed key employees at the West Texas State School in Pyote, Texas, were systematically abusing youth inmates in their custody.

So not only are you a military tactician, but your a legal beagle too??

OK lets say the gun did belong to Webb? So what? Do you have any sort of legal case against Webb even if the gun was his?

Webb of course is a former Marine with honors.

For the record here is the statement from Webb’s office!

[Webb’s office issued a statement saying that “to our knowledge this incident was an oversight.” The aide, Philip Thompson, is “a long-term friend and trusted employee” of the senator, according to the statement.]

The only person who can be accused of a crime is the aide who carried in the gun. I guess you want his blood too.

Oh wait - He’s a former Marine too -

[Thompson is a former Marine and former editor of the Marine Corps Times newspaper who served as Webb’s personal assistant during last year’s campaign and was hired for the same role on his Senate staff. He travels frequently with Webb and generally is at his side during Senate committee hearings.]

I thought you supported the good people that made up the armed forces of Amerika’.. I guess not - you waffler’

Most likely when your talking two Marines working together and both having weapons permits, these two military buddies probably go to the firing range together.

Senator Webb is entitled to carry a gun (unloaded and wrapped) into the building in question. The issue is the aide carried in a gun with clips loaded in conjunction with it. That is what the capitol police arrested him for.

In any case, the United States could not get involved in a land war in Asia in the Philipenes because we had controlled it since 1898.

Whatshisname makes a moronic comment that Patton could drive on Tehran at the behest of a dead man, and this is where you wind up?

Walt,

It is certainly ridiculous to pursue this, but it is also true that US policy, which Truman famously tossed, was TO NOT GET INVOLVED IN A LAND WAR IN ASIA.

The Philipenes -could-not- be in Asia for this purpose, nor could Iwo Jima or any other major battle of WWII. The US forces that -were- sent to Asia (basically Burma) were chroincially short changed in every department because the policy was to TO NOT GET INVOLVED IN A LAND WAR IN ASIA.

The Senate just voted to allow the troops to run with their tail between their legs next year. This is not reflective of the bravery of our troops, but this move is that certain Homocrat candidates for ‘08 can say “Look what I did!” They care nothing about our troops or the safety of our country, they just want to get in the White House.

And I would have voted for McCain in 2000

Man that was harsh. McCain looks like a fool. I would like to see him drop out of the pres race just in order to save his dignity. I have a lot of respect for him still, but the last 4-6 years he has just been positioning himself for a presidential run. There is still time, maybe if he is far enough back in the polls he will just lose it and start acting like himself instead of a politically molded candidate

RE — I agree. I think politics has done what no prison camp could to McCain: made him sell himself out. 6 years ago he was a straight-shooting outsider. Apparently he learned a harsh lesson in political reality from Bush, and is now selling his dignity as fast as anyone would buy it. I don’t dislike him, I genuinely pity the man. I too wish he would not run to save his reputation and his dignity.

Do you repugs have anyone left in government who hasn’t committed multiple crimes, resigned in disgrace, or is about to resign in disgrace?

Resigned in disgrace: Rumsfeld, Delay, Libby, Cunningham, Ney, Foley, multiple underlings…

About to resign in disgrace: Gonzalez, Rove, Cheney…

Committed multiple crimes: Cunningham, Ney, Delay, Rove, Cheney, Gonzalez, and of course the lowliest criminal, GW.

(And I know I probably missed about 12 others.)

RE: McCain looks hapless, of late. I think his play for the christian whacko’s fell flat. They seem, for now, to be gravitating toward Giuliani. We can watch. The phrase not to engage American Troops in a land war in Asia is famous. MacArthur told Kennedy that in 1961. he was talking about VietNam. I fought the Nut-Jobs on that for two days on this Blog. They insisted MacArthur never said it! I think Bush has learned that lesson the very hard way. The Iran War will be air only. The Israeli Press report war is imminent.

LuckoDull @6:30- “Hey maybe Snow will suffer and make you real happy, you piece of sh-it ghoul.”

No amount of earthly suffering would suffice to equal the suffering that Bush and his band of henchmen (including the Snow man) have wrought on the world.

The Snow Man and his accomplices have begun to answer to a higher power, now. I hear THAT level of suffering is much more appropriate to the level of darkness in their souls and it lasts for all of eternity!

McCain is simply pathetic now. His saving grace 6 years ago was that he could appeal to moderates, and even a few of us liberals liked him. Now he’s pandering to the fundamentalist loonies. They’re not falling for it, and moderates and liberals won’t touch him because he’s mirroring bush’s failed ideology.

The two best Republicans are moderates- Giuliani and Hagel- and one of them is suggesting impeachment for the idiot in the White House whose been in over his head from day one.

Doom you have it all wrong. I have the Dem plan for 08, which really predicts goals can be reached by 2010.

First, require all grade schools and highschools have a free abortion clinic in every nurse’s office.

2nd, Promote “gay is ok” day at schools where every child is encouraged to explore themselves and others of the same gender. Details are still being worked out with Nambla.

3rd, To formally surrender to “the terrorists” and give over control of the country to muslims. Each US citizen may be required to denounce Christ and urinate on a flag wrapped cross.

4th, to implement the new government which will be an athiest, maoist, socialist, communist, fascist, muslim, ACLU, pro-gay, anti business, pro union, pro tax, anti freedom, pro abortion, anti gun law, anti hunting, pro bad stuff, anti good stuff communal collective where we will all be forced to work on state controlled farms and kick little puppies and babies.

Basically, it is just like you think it will be. See the voices in your head were right.

Certainly “we” does not include the left side of the aisle “contributors” who think Tony Snow deserves to have liver cancer because he’s a “LIAR” like Bush.

How about the rest of the “moderates” who comment here? Do they grieve or do they cheer?

Quite frankly, I don’t sense a bit of “grief” from the Left. Rage should not to be confused with grief.
