it amazes me 30% still support bush & co.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
almost daily, it seems, there are revelations about the LIES-( anyone who leaked a cia agent’s name in my administraion will be fired, wmd, al-qaida/saddam link, we’ll be greeted as liberators, central front in the war on terror, makin’ good progress….) INCOMPETENCE- (katrina, iraq, my pet goat, tora bora, global warming, harriett miers, dubai….) TREASON- (valerie plame). and yet there are a minority of americans who say they support these idiots. retired general tony mcpeak, member of the joint chiefs during the gulf war said this recently, “America has been conducting an experiment for the past six years, trying to validate the proposition that it really doesn’t make any difference who you elect president. Now we know the result of that experiment [laughs]. If a guy is stupid, it makes a big difference.” fortunately, 70% of americans realize that too. in 2008, i hope you 70% will join me in voting for the candidate you feel is most COMPETENT and pray the 30% forgets to vote. mike

I think it comes back to people wanting to feel safe and secure.
-Their- security seems okay, so the Bill of Rights and the finances of the country going down the toilet, or the wrecking of the Armed Forces — none of that fazes them.

The most black and white issue that the Bush supporters have to rationalize away, in my opinion, is the one of an American citizen (Jose Padilla) being held for 3.5 years with no charges and no trial. This in clear contravention of the Bill of Rights.
No matter how much pablum from FOX they suck down, this is just plain as day.
And that is why I say that their own personal security is what is paramount to them.
Apparently, they are juist terrified of Al Qaeda and Bush makes them (still) feel safe.
When Bush says that everyone had the same pre-war intel and it was all a big mistake, they buy it.
When Cheney says that the Bush Administration has kept us safe here, they buy it.
When Bush says that “we’d better fight them over there in Iraq,”, they buy it.
Even though noon of those statements will bear even a moment’s scrutiny.

Luckovich,
I prefer not to say here the words that come to mind when I read what you wrote. I don’t usually use those words. Patriotic American was not one of them. In fact, I would say that you are the exact opposite of patriotic American.
You seem determined to undermine the country and show your opposition to our war in Iraq. You do not support the troops by any means. You do it all under the guise of hating Bush. You are a disgrace to the country and to Atlanta.

Our next President, whether Republican or Democrat is really going to have a tough job repairing the damage this administration has done.
One of the biggest problems with Bush is that he doesn’t seem to want to be the President of all the people. He is far from the uniter he claimed to be which I feel is one of his biggest lies. His loyalty seems to be to his friends, his failed ideology and $$$.
Mike, your blog has been a great tool in exposing the fraud that this administration is. Reading some of the responses of the Bush supporters here makes it clear, Bush is the biggest failure of a President in American history, by far. Thanks for letting them help prove it day in and day out.

It amazes me that someone who can’t type in uppercase letters where they belong would call anyone an idiot.
Especially someone who has grown our economy so that unemployment is at a decades low 4.5%, home ownership is at a record high, Al Qaeda has been dismantled from the monster that Clinton ignored into a noisy harmless democrat clone, the Middle East is soon to have a functional democracy in it’s midst where there was once only mass graves and liberalism is being exposed as the fake problem creating, government resource wasting bald faced liars that they really are.
It’s pretty sad to know that the only way you can win is to make mountains out of molehills and blame them on the other guy.
It’s pretty sad actually.
I can remember John Kennedy.

We were close to becoming a nation of enablers.
We were overtaken by a medium-sized dose of good sense last November when the wisest of American voters changed the course of this nation. The American electorate clearly voted against this Administration, against the whatever-it-is in Iraq and for decent damn government.
We still have the enablers though. I figure the percentage is in the low 30’s currently, but with love, gentle guidance and most likely an unfortunate tragedy - that number can and will come down to the low 20’s. Some people may have to suffer an actual physical or financial loss directly tied to our current pack o’ neo-publicans before they wake up and smell the coffee. I am truly sorry for that.
Some people just won’t get it. It will be our responsibility to be tolerant of these individuals. American history has a colorful cast of characters. Washington, Jefferson Adams, Franklin, et.al. There was also the occasional Benedict Arnold. Now don’t you members of the far right get all fussy. I’m not calling you traitors. Just misguided. I think Arnold was misguided as well. He fell for the madness of HIS King GEORGE. YOU can still join the good guys.
We must vow to each other, that come regime change in November of ’08, we will be vigilant in our search for truth, unwavering in our commitment to traditional populist values and hold our elected officials to the highest of possible standards. 70% of us know it’s not about any political party. It is about political MOVEMENTS. Right now, the movement is carefully stepping back to the center. We can learn compassionate compromise.
If we don’t watch the newbies as closely as we are watching this sinking ship, then we too will become enablers.
I don’t know about you, but I refuse to be co-dependent with this bunch or any other for that matter.
Peace.

LuckoDull,
Unemployment is figured at 4.5% because they changed the way it was figured. They no longer count those whose benefits have run out or those who’ve given up the search. They count part-time employment without benefits as full-time employment. Good-paying middle-class jobs are outsourced to the lowest bidder and formerly well-paid citizens are now Wal-Mart greeters.
While home ownership is at record highs, so is the foreclosure rate. Sub prime lenders are already in the deep stuff, and major players in the mortgage industry are fixing to take one right between the eyes. What good is ‘owning’ a home if you’ll be unable to KEEP it?
Al-qaeda is dismantled??? What the heck have you been smoking??
The only democracy in the ME is Israel, and if you think for one minute that Iran will allow Iraq to become one you’ve had too much Kool-Aid.
Bush is nothing more than a puppet for the Globalists, and a sock puppet at that. Karl Rove has his hand so far up Bush’s behind he could pick his nose from the inside.
And I VOTED for the dweeb. Boy, am I ashamed at that.
We need new, patriotic blood in the White House, and it’s not going to be found in EITHER of the major parties.
Ron Paul for President!!!!

The Luckovich cartoon I’d like to see involves Congressional Republicans. They say Congress must send money to Iraq because they support the TROOPS. If they want to help out soldiers so much, ask those troops if they’d like to leave Iraq. What they support is WAR!

I am also amazed that Bush has 30% support. The liberal media, liberal Hollywood, liberal academia, liberal Democrats have continually bashed him for the last six years - and he still has 30%! Gosh, it seems that only 30% of those polled think for themselves and are not swayed by all of the hot air liberal nonsense.

Great toons, Mike. Great editorial. What those 30% can’t see is that any US President would have worked to protect the citizens after 9/11: bush didn’t have a monopoly on security. However, I believe ANY past US President would have done a better job than bush.
Another thing is that the 30% cannot comprehend how stupid, weak and ineffective a US President can be; they are supposed to be great leaders and most have had leadership abilities, but this man has done nothing to deserve being in the White House; he is only a con artist and total failure.
Another piece of that 30% is a group that can’t comprehend all politics. They vote one way because they always have; will support the President because they think they should and not realize by supporting bush, they are supporting the internal destruction of this great country.
And Dusty, Andy, all neocons; we owe our patriotism and allegience to this country before some stupid man with funny ears that sits in the White House with his finger up his… Unlike neo-cons, we are trying to defend and preserve our great country and we worship God, not a neocon president.

Mike,
By and large the supporters of Bush and his cohorts are: NASCAR Nation, NRA members, religious fundamentalists, and extremely wealthy bigots. Subgroups include skinheads, KKK, white power supporters, freedom of choice opponents, and big business fanatics.
Finally, even some of these mostly single-issue voters have seen the light and realize that the Bush administration has single-handedly set the United States back decades, if not generations both financially and in the eyes of the planet’s community of nations.

Cindy, if he is so bad, why was he reelected? He was reelected by 51%, which means that 21% have been swayed by all of the liberal hot air. BTW, after winning their FIRST (and only) election in six years, the Democrats have done nothing but give us more grid lock. They seem to think that they were elected president (crazy). It’s get Bush at all cost - forget the country.

That’s the whole point, Brad. He lied and deceived the American public. People just would not believe an American President could be so evil, so many continued to trust him. As his true colors were exposed, supporters dropped their support and many have regretted that they didn’t know before the election what kind of person bush was.

Cindy - my point is that he was reelected even after going into Iraq! If he is so evil, why is the liberal media always criticizing him for asking God to bless America. Why would an evil person do that? Well yes, they criticize him no matter what he does.

Mike, You must be either intellectually dishonest or have a room temperature IQ to believe what you have stated in your post. Correcting all the inaccuracies would take too long, so let’s concentrate on the Plame matter. 1. The author of the law, Toensing(sp?) has stated that Plame’s identity would NOT be protected under the law. 2. Since no one was ever prosecuted, by the special prosecutor, who certainly was after administration officials, this seems to support no law was broken in the revelation of Plame’s identity. 3. The people who did reveal her identity have been established as Rich Armitage and Ari Fleischer. Neither of whom is now, or has been for some time, a part of the administration and, arguably, are not seen as being close to the President or top Presidential aides. Yet with all these facts, you continue to use “TREASON (Plame)” and refer to President Bush’s statement that he would fire anyone in his administration that leaked her name as some sort of negative. So which are you, intellectually dishonest or of low IQ?

Using Ms. Toensing logic, no CIA operative’s identify can be protected when they are on U.S. soil. No one was tried for outing Mrs. Wilson because the law does make allowances for ignorance. Armitage and Fleischer not being high in the administration when the outing occurred is comical. You can’t get much higher in the administration than second in command at the State Department and the President’s Press Secretary. The original leaker Armitage plead ignorance, Fleischer plead the fifth, and everybody else got a pass because they were not the first and told the truth to the grand jury, except for Scooter. The current CIA Director confirmed in writing that Mrs. Wilson was a covert-undercover operative at the time. What is so unfortunate is that a major secret CIA organization, Brewster Jennings, had to be dismantled, people may have been killed or like Mrs. Wilson no longer having value to the country as agents, and the United States integrity around the world has been further diminished. All because Richard Cheney was upset that Mr. Wilson said that he was sent to Niger by the VP. I would say that if the office of the VP ordered the CIA to check on the yellow cake situation, and the CIA sent Joe Wilson, then under the unity of command model says that Cheney sent Wilson to Niger. Using Cheney’s logic, it would be wrong for any soldier to ever specifically say that they are in Iraq because the President sent them.
