How about that Jim Webb?

There is no hint of “champagne squadron” about him.

Funny cartoon ml. I like what Giulliani had to say about the campaign.

“He fully expects to see 2012 candidates begin campaigning before the 2008 election is held.”

Jim Webb’s speech was very well written. He stepped into the hallowed halls like a stormtrooper though. I’m not sure how receptive the old guard will be to him. He’s been described as a loose cannon by his fellow representatives.

Well written, but no solutions. No Democrat interviewed offered solutions or details.

Disappointing.

This was Bush’s sixth SOTU address. It was also the first one in which he called for “reaching across the aisle” in a spirit of bipartisanship. I wonder why he didn’t bother using that rhetoric in the last five SOTUs?

Don’t bother to answer. We all know why.

All in all though the speech was a total flop. Seriously. There is nothing there. Bush was pathetic. The GOP is flailing. The Republicans stood by their man for years. Never questioned him, never challenged him. Bush and his party are bad for America.

And, we all know George Allen’s macaca moment was significant. But, one more time, we see just how important it was. Jim Webb’s eight-minute speech said more than all of the major speeches Bush has given for the past couple years.

By Blackadder

I really think Bush’s speech got re-written at the last minute after they’d gotten so much heat for their announced plans to pretty much ignore Iraq. Speaking of ignoring, what the hell happened to family values and the social conservatives? Did they get ANYTHING in the entire speech? Abortion, gone. Activist judges, gone. Gay marriage, gone. That’s the sleeper shocker of this speech, the utter cleansing of anything that would appeal to the family values crowd. They have truly become the crazy aunt in the attic, to be hidden at all costs.

Blackadder:

Your 8:50 comment? You have got to be kidding!!!

Bush’s acceptance speech in 2000 called for and promoted bipartisanship.

Might I suggest you do some research on Bush’s SoTUs. I’m looking at transcripts from every one of them, and in each one he offers and calls for cooperation. He commends Democrats for their efforts in bipartisan legislation.

He even refers to Ted Kennedy as “his good friend” on NCLB.

You wouldn’t favor one direction when you slither would you?

When you do your research, and I know you will, be sure that they’re “official transcripts”. Nothing from DailyKos, DemocratUnderground, Truthout, etc. etc. etc..

Now…please enlighten me on the solutions (in detail) that the Democrats had to offer.

Empty Democratic rhetoric doesn’t mean crap to me, as a voter.

Well,

That was a grand speech the President made last night. Americans should be proud of the President. He presented good ideas with honor and intelligence.

He was absolutely correct in saying that a successful finish to the Iraq War is essential to the security of the USA if not the world.

I also liked the compassionate touch of presenting those who are entrepreneurs, caring, fighters for their country and those willing to risk their lives for others. It was a good part of his speech.

For the first time ever, the response to the State of the Union Message overshadowed the president’s big speech. Virginia Sen. James Webb, in office only three weeks, managed to convey a muscular liberalism—with personal touches—that left President Bush’s ordinary address in the dust. In the past, the Democratic response has been anemic—remember Washington Gov. Gary Locke? This time it pointed the way to a revival for national Democrats.

Webb is seen as a moderate or even conservative Democrat, but this was a populist speech that quoted Andrew Jackson, founder of the Democratic Party and champion of the common man. The speech represented a return to the tough-minded liberalism of Scoop Jackson and Hubert Humphrey, but by quoting Republicans Teddy Roosevelt (on “improper corporate influence”) and Dwight D. Eisenhower (on ending the Korean War), he reinforced the argument that President Bush had taken the GOP away from its roots.

In January 1999, after his impeachment by the House of Representatives, Bill Clinton’s job approval rating was 65%. In January 1987, Ronald Reagan’s was 52%. Lyndon Johnson received a 47% approval rating in early 1967, even as debate about the Vietnam War raged. Johnson’s lowest approval rating was 35%, reached in August 1968.

I don’t blindly support this administration. I definitely don’t believe this administration is perfect.

However, I do get frustrated with the anti-war crowd ignoring a couple of simple facts.

First of all, we have won the war. We won the war the minute we took Saddam Hussein out of power and installed a democratic Iraqi government. We are not fighting government soldiers over there. We are being attacked by terrorists that are upset we won the war.

Second of all, we have not seen any kind of terrorist attack in the United States in five and a half years. Why? They are too busy fighting us in Iraq to worry about attacking us at home. Yes, it has resulted in the death of some of our soldiers which is regrettable and tragic. However, It has saved countless lives at home.

Third, the democratic party needs to wake up and realize a few things before I can vote for them.

Welfare is being abused badly. We do not need to consider handing our hard-earned money out like candy. I support some forms of welfare. However, we have third and fourth generation people doing nothing but freeloading off of welfare.

I saw a suggestion by a conservative that said we should make people work for and earn their welfare. The response from a person on the left: We can’t make people work for welfare.

This country is a free country. However, the founding fathers never intended free to mean that you can do whatever you want whenever. There are limitations to what you can do. It seems the Democratic party will support the ability of people to do whatever they want as long as those people give them money.

“We have not seen any kind of terrorist attack in the United States in five and a half years. Why? They are too busy fighting us in Iraq to worry about attacking us at home.

THEN EXPLAIN WHY WENT 8 YEARS WITHOUT AN ATTACK AFTER THE FEBRUARY ‘93 ATTACK ON THE WORLD TRADE CENTER. CLINTON WAS PRESIDENT FOR THOSE YEARS UNTIL JANUARY 2001. THEN WHAT HAPPENED? WE WEE ATTACKED BECAUSE BUSH IGNORED A STARK WARNING IN THAT ILL FATED DAILY BRIEFING.

“Yes, it has resulted in the death of some of our soldiers which is regrettable and tragic. However, It has saved countless lives at home.”

“SOME” OF OUR SOLDIERS? I’D CALL MORE THAN 3,000 MORE THAN “SOME”. NOT TO MENTION THE MORE THAN 5,000 WHO CAME HOME MISSING BODY PARTS AND THEIR MENTAL HEALTH.

“Welfare is being abused badly. We do not need to consider handing our hard-earned money out like candy.”

Goood cartoon. Wonder which candidates Mr. L will set his sights on first?

Okay SOTU. Wasn’t nearly as earth-shattering as some of the news reports led me to think it would be. Don’t think there was enough of success against jihadists (other than Iraq) - Somalia, southeast Asia, breaking financial networks. Not enough regarding successes with N Korea (again, financial isolation) or other options (financial embargo). Would have liked more “what’s on horizon” - China and Russia policies impacting America.

Latest Gallup Poll

Link:http://www.galluppoll.com/content/default.aspx?ci=26230

shows a majority of Americans are pretty satisfied with the state of the economy, think they pay too much in federal taxes and are not at all pleased with health care. They’re really upset with Medicare/Aid and immigration.

He could have played up the positives more and shown some change of course in his earlier proposals - and challenged both party leaders “if you don’t like it, work with it.”

Those energy proposals aren’t gonna cut it. CAFE? Fine - but SUVs, trucks, minivans aren’t “cars” and the increases won’t apply. There goes half the vehicles. Ethanol? As I understand it, it’s a net loss, at best equal. Expect the charges/countercharges to fly on this one.

Link:http://www.factcheck.org/article446.html

Same with health care. Republicans have too much faith in “the market” Democrats have too much in “the gov’t.” Both miss the mark, I think.

Immigration the same - I don’t believe in “Leadership by Polling” but there are some pretty big margins in those results.

Democratic response - well, I don’t mind talking to “the region” - but why would Iran want to make life easier for us? Instability serves their national interest. Last couple of days we see some religious leaders may be reigning in Ahmadinejad - possibly some contacts could go to the religious leaders through third parties. That’s messing in the details, though.

Well, Americans will want these problems dealt with. As long as someone else pays for it. Bipartisanship? I’ll believe it when I see it. Offers will be there - but little action, I’m afraid.

Paul @ 12:10:

I’m always looking at several pieces of the geopolitical puzzle.

Any country with a radical extremist problem, and their governments response to the problem.

China…pursuing global influence while dealing with internal problems at home. BTW…Look…Hu’s got religion…

“With the Vatican’s proven power to mobilize citizens, as well as the growing number of Roman Catholics in China, the Chinese recognize that cooperating with the Vatican will help to prevent future internal disorder.”

They’re also compromising on “property rights”.

…and then there’s Russia. I remember Andy, whose viewpoints I respected, said about Putin…”this man is not our friend.”

He, too is pursuing world power. His renewed interest in India is intriguing. I think India will benefit more than Russia though.

Anyway, nice to see your analysis of the SoTU.

Not interested in name-calling? That’s not my recollection. Sorry that you find “parrot” so offensive.

General Petraeus is going to deploy troops to the borders to keep the Iranians who are helping Al Sadr out of the country. For this to succeed they need more troops in the Bagdad. 21,500 is short of the number he would like, but I suppose Nancy Pelosi knows best about military strategy.

Since the only thing the Dems offered was redeploying to Okinawa, I can only conclude that you are willing to let Iran, Syria, and Al Qaeda operate with impunity.

It does appear that an awful lot of those little “W”s are disappearing from the rear of your BMWs, Lexus, and Big ole SUVs as quickly as another pole is published regarding W’s approval rating. Nobody wants to associate themselves with a looser or someone that can only pull a 28% approval rating! His pityful excuse for a health plan will only help about 3 million of the 100 million that are uninsured and the rest of us will end up paying more for what we currently have. You don’t believe it? That comes directly from the White House!! Gotta run and take care of some business, but look out for the “swift boat” people to rear their ugly heads again and go after Jim Webb, his son and his father the same way they did after John Kerry and Max Cleland. OK Randy I’ll throw you a bone. Here’s a sample:

“Democratic Party leaders are beginning to coalesce around a broad plan to begin a quick withdrawal of US troops and install them elsewhere in the region, where they could respond to emergencies in Iraq and help fight terrorism in other countries.

The concept, dubbed “strategic redeployment,” is outlined in a slim, nine-page report coauthored by a former Reagan administration assistant Defense secretary, Lawrence J. Korb, in the fall. It sets a goal of a phased troop withdrawal that would take nearly all US troops out of Iraq by the end of 2007.”

You’ll have to take the initiative and do more research. I don’t ask you wingnuts to provide me with answers. I do my own checking. I expect you to do yours.

Does the smell of burned flesh excite you in a million little ways? No, right?

Does the concept of 10,000 fine young people with head injuries so severe they will never function normally again help you get up in the morning. No, right?

Lawrence Korb’s a good quy - not partisan, very smart. Good bio of him here:

Link:http://www.americanprogress.org/experts/KorbLawrence.html

He was Asst SecDef for Manpower in the early 80s - was well respected. Since then he’s shown himself as an original thinker and a good analyst. One may not agree with all his positions - but he comes up with some pretty original ones.

The strat redeployment article is here:

Link:http://www.americanprogress.org/issues/2006/05/strategic_redeployment.html

with a pdf link to a summary and the full article.

There are some sound, rational recommendations there. The redeployment calls for basing in Afghanistan, Kuwait and “the Persian Gulf.” That makes me uneasy - aside from the “quick response” logistical problems (makes my head hurt thinking about it), that’s still a huge number of US forces in an area where alliances shift quickly.

Given the President’s already got the surge strategy going, this may make a good backup if the action does not prove effective. Then again, elements of the plan could begin right away.

But I am so tired of you BushBots hanging on every falacy he speaks about terrorist and how us being in Iraq will stop them. How we are making America safer. Meanwhile we are making the whole world worried about what America will do next. The other countries watch us and either look for advantage in our failures, or if they are friends worry that our actions will bring harm to them.

Iraq is not helping our world status one bit.

If you truly believe that Iraq is just one battleground in a war that may take decades then you are saying - Sorry world, but “We the People of the United States” have inadvertantly started World War Three. So beware everyone - your country may be next!

great future huh?

yes you are correct on the 49$ for our company to go, and yes I am correct on the $225 at the door.

FYI - I am the boss!

I am both the Founder of the Company and the Major Stockholder. Our CEO got the tickets for us! No one in the company has been made or forced to go. Everyone in the company (in Atlanta) was offered the chance to go if they wished to.

Thank you for playing - please try again!

Goldie, please - that was sarcasm!

It was a reference to here’s a trial - lying, obstruction - whatever happened to the “Covert Agent” thing? I read your links yesterday, gave my thoughts, then with another poster (BlackAdder, I believe) had a pretty good discussion about the Intelligence Identities Protection Act.

He’d also read it (ummm, no, I don’t think it was an O’Reilly summary) and correctly pointed out prosecution requires not only that a “covert agent” (defined in the Act) have identity revealed, but also that the “revealer” know the person was covert. Then he made the point, well, keep pressing and find a lesser, unrelated charge to go to trial.

He (I believe) also initially said I didn’t know if she was covert or not. I responded - of course not! That’s the whole point! No one - not CIA, not Fitzgerald, not Justice - ever documented she was at that time anything other than an employee. Fitzgerald specifically ducked the issue in his first press conference. The only ones who did know absolutely, positively, without a doubt were some on this forum who had an “I hate all things Bush” agenda.

So now we’re here, with a trial, and it’s not even an issue, as there are other ways to embarrass the Administration. Which is about as valid and sensical an issue as the Ken Starr thing.

RW, I can certainly afford skis. It would just be easier to buy them with your money. But obviously you wouldn’t dare to play a game which requires brains with me. You’re dumb, but you’re not too dumb to realize you’d get smoked. As to where I play, that’s none of your business.

If you can find nothing better to do than to insult my dancing skills, your life is even more pathetic than I previously thought.

Okay, Goldie, let’s run this “was Valerie Plame a covert agent” thing down.

Factcheck.org is a pretty good organization. Their speciality is tracking political ads, campaigns, issues, then checking the accuracy of claims and reports.

You like links. Here’s one to mid-2005 on a timeline of “what we know so far.”

Link:http://www.factcheck.org/article337.html

Pls check July 14 - Novak’s column named Valerie Plame but does not identify her as a “covert agent.”

July 16 - Plame’s husband speaks with David Corn, Washington bureau chief for the liberal magazine The Nation. Wilson says, “Naming her this way would have compromised every operation, every relationship, every network with which she had been associated in her entire career.” Corn’s entry is the first instance where someone alleges publicly that the release of Valerie Plame’s name disclosed the identity of a covert agent.

July 22 - Newsday publishes a story as saying, based in part on Wilson ’s assertions, that senior administration officials “violated the law and may have endangered her (Mrs. Wilson’s) career and possibly the lives of her contacts in foreign countries.” The newspaper says Wilson wouldn’t confirm that his wife was a covert agent.

So the reference to “Covert Agent” was first in a liberal blog, then Newsday said lives were in danger - and the source was Joe Wilson, Plames husband. Then Wilson says he won’t confirm she was covert - no need to - the story was running.

Old history, I know. But you asked.

You invited me to play poker with you and refuse to tell me where to come play. Then you say that means I’m scared to play you.

With that kind of “logic” I’m beginning to see why you can’t understand a simple concept of not allowing a threat to become imminent.

As for your dancing, I didn’t criticize your skills there either. I said it would seem that you being an airhead would get in the way which also leaves the possibility that perhaps it wouldn’t.

Paul,

I am disappointed…THINK, for just a second…

Novak’s article identified Plame as an employee of the CIA. Now, for all Plame’s contacts, associates, neighbors, etc. that were unaware of this fact (due to the fact that she claimed employment with Brewster Jennings - a CIA front) don’t you think that was the equivalent?

No, he didn’t say she was a ‘covert’ agent, though. Guess it depends on the definition of ‘exposed.’

Eighteen House Republicans have urged the Justice Department to proceed with a polygraph test for Samuel R. Berger, the former national security adviser who agreed to take the test as part of a plea of guilty of stealing documents from the National Archives. “This may be the only way for anyone to know whether Mr. Berger denied the 9/11 commission and the public the complete account of the Clinton administration’s actions or inactions during the lead-up to the terrorist attacks on the United States,” the congressmen said in their letter to Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales.

You reckon he’ll submit?

Or will they send out He Bit-ch Clinton to whine and shriek about the vast right wing conspiracy?

Cause where there’s smoke, there’s fire.

Bergler didn’t want us to see something, enough so that he stuffed it in his pants like he was hiding some smoke or something.

So how bad was the Clinton failure to stop 9/11, did he know dates, names, places?

LHU

Sigh. Coulda been such a good post without the little tag lines.

Matters of law are about what the law says. Not what we want it to say. Not what we think it should say. It’s about what it says.

The applicable Act, with definitions of when violations occur, is very specific in distinguishing a covert agent. One may work at CIA. One may be an agent. Or an analyst. Or a section chief. Or whether or not one took part in previous covert ops. Or whether or not one built a false identity in conjunction with those earlier actions.

But that does not constitute a criminal act for revealing the identity agent. Unwise, possibly. Dumb, possibly. But in this context it has to meet certain conditions to be a criminal act.

Considering that 21, 499 of them are complete losers who shouldn’t be put in charge of a pile of manure, why is a large number a problem?

Americans should have dozens of political parties to choose from and dozens of candidates. Everyone should have the opportunity to vote for the candidate that represents their views or as close as possible.

Thankfully Congressman Ron Paul from Texas will be running. America just might have a future if he gets elected.

Look him up and check out his excellent stands on every issue.

A politically weakened President Bush implored a skeptical Congress Tuesday night to embrace his unpopular plan to send more U.S. troops to Iraq, saying it represents the best hope in a war America must not lose. “Give it a chance to work,” he said.

In comparison to previous rebuttals by the Democrats Webb’s speech was better in quality only. Content was absent as usual. It was delivered with an “in your face” attitude that I’ve never appreciated in politicians.

Nancy Pelosi was funny though. I got the distinct impression she was looking to the Democrats on the floor trying to figure out when to applaude and when not to applaude.
