Isn’t the subject of this cartoon like several days old now?

You mind telling us what day of the week it is, Mikey?

And what’s up with the stripes on the football?

Our boy has confused the ball with the referees.

Boring AND odd.

Luckovich is a broken hearted Falcon fan, like we all are. Mora has proved to be a child. A football coach is a peculiar archetype: he has to be smart enough to adjust his game plan to win, yet dumb enough to think it matters.

Mora has an very strange strange style on the field. He’s constantly waving the red flag in the opponent’s face, like he’s taunting bulls. He seems to be more concerned with cheap tricks than solid game plans.

He knows one play: the draw play.

If you throw every down, you cant win. If you run every down you cant win. But if you throw, then run, then fake punt and do a tweedle-dee flea-flicker, you’ll wet the cheerleader’s panties. That seems to be Mora’s strategy, and so far it’s working, but for how long?

That’s all I’m saying.

It’s amusing to read the wing-nuts’ recent posts about the changes in ML’s blog (particularly RW’s comments).

They are ridiculing this blog because it has fewer posts than in the past. Isn’t that just the most intelligent remark possible? [sarc/off]. And they then proceed to take “credit” for this decrease in post quantity because it is the wing-nuts who are posting less often.

I think they should also take credit for the increase in the quality of this blog since they are posting less often. Also, they should take credit for improvement in the relevance of the dialog on the blog since they have fled from here. Perhaps they should also take credit for this blog’s recent improvement in civility.

Now then…if they choose to say that they are leaving and won’t be back, I remember a wonderful line from the film “Clerks”: “You’ll be missed!”

Textbook stickers on evolution out in Cobb

By TommyT

December 19, 2006 04:29 PM | Link to this

The settlement puts an end to a nationally watched case that has raised questions of local authority over schools and whether Cobb’s sticker —- which called evolution “a theory, not a fact” —- runs afoul of the First Amendment. “We’re very pleased that the Cobb County school board has done the respsonsible thing, to call a halt to the litigation,” said Debbie Seagraves, executive director ACLU of Georgia. “It’s absolutely a victory for the parents and the children in Cobb County school.”

Goldie: It’s no wonder that you liberals get excited when ideas you don’t like get censored, seeing how you are too shallow and ignorant to debate them.

By rushncap

December 19, 2006 04:33 PM | Link to this

Ah yes, the typical Republican line: as long as someone, somewhere is making money, all is OK. Thanks Tommy for bringing that mantra to our attention. I guess thousands of deaths are far easier to swallow knowing that Iraqna is making someone quite rich.

The article is quite lovely. It quotes interesting factoids like “income-tax cuts (from 45 percent to just 15 percent)”. Amusing, considering that since there is no actual government, the tax rate could be 137% for all anyone cares, there is no one to collect these taxes. Or the factoid that “[s]alaries have gone up more than 100 percent since the fall of Saddam”, which comes a couple of breaths after “[u]nemployment runs between 30 and 50 percent”. So, ummm, although half the country is unemployed, the other half has better salaries? And, of course, “elimination of tariffs and trade barriers”. Hard to have those when there is absolutely no impediment to crossing the national borders, isn’t it?

And then there is this gem: “A government often accused of being no government at all has somehow managed to take its first steps to liberalize the highly centralized economy of the Saddam era.” This is presented as somehow shocking. No, what WOULD be shocking is if the non-existent government would have somehow retained central control. Of course economy is de-centralized! It’s reverted back to the primitive barter system of 4,000 years ago. “I’ll give you a sheep if you give me a Kalashnikov.” If you can convince someone of this particular trade, you’re a business mogul: you wind up with a sheep, a Kalashnikov, and a body to dispose of.

All of this adds up to the idea that Iraqis are more optimistic about the future than we think. That may be so. That may also be a failure of imagination. After all, how, exactly, does it get much worse than it is now? It reminds me of one of the many great stand-up routines by a famous Russian comedian: “They keep telling us ‘Don’t worry, there is no place to go but up.’ Yes there is. And we can still head in that direction for a very long time.”

Debate my a$$, I’ve seen what you call debate. You’ve got all the skills of a three year old child strapped into a high chair but armed with a bowl of cereal.

The outcome is pointless.

Real estate is booming. Construction, retail and wholesale trade sectors are healthy, too, according to a report by Global Insight in London. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce reports 34,000 registered companies in Iraq, up from 8,000 three years ago. Sales of secondhand cars, televisions and mobile phones have all risen sharply. Estimates vary, but one from Global Insight puts GDP growth at 17 percent last year and projects 13 percent for 2006. The World Bank has it lower: at 4 percent this year. But, given all the attention paid to deteriorating security, the startling fact is that Iraq is growing at all.

Hell, you can say the same things about the US economy.

You want to trash that too?

I guess you liberals think anything over a potato a day and a nice field to toil in is evil and bound to fail, right?

We liberals think that it does not matter how many companies there are when thousands are dying. We liberals happen to value human life. Even yours. You value only money.

Oh, and to answer your question. What is the price of oil today? About 2.5 times what it was at the time of our invasion of Iraq ($63 today, $26 in March ‘03). Hope that helps.

Rushncap: Not a very good analogy. I expected more from you than this. Ever since the Earth was created, gravity has held objects to it. This is indisputable and has never been in doubt. Perhaps your ancestors floated freely into space? I know mine didn’t.

A theorem was developed by Newton which explained the FACT of why gravity exists. It is called a theory because the exact force cannot be seen or proven.

Evolution does not possess the same factual evidence as gravity does. Maybe it would be different if there were species that were transitional, with their predecessor intact. But there is nothing. All you liberals have are some pictures of fish bones and textbooks full of babble.

Cobb County had every right to open the debate.

By your measure no country should ever defend itself, we should all live in a world commune, if someone wants to behead us then we should submit quietly as not to offend them.

So what is the point of even having an economy? What are we debating for?

It seems to me, Tiny Tim, that you “expected” me to be down on your level. Sorry to disappoint. Newton did not explain the “fact of why gravity exists”. Newton explained why an apple falls to the ground, and called that theory gravity. Darwin explained the fact that there are a lot of different species on this planet, and called it evolution. Same thing. As for “textbooks full of babble”, it is not the textbooks’ writers’ fault you cannot understand them. Most people can. There may be value in shooting low enough to explain things to people like you, but that is open to debate. I’m open to that option, however.

Cobb County has no more right to redefine science or evolution than it has choosing what it wants to teach about gravity. Cobb County either teaches biology as it is accepted by the scientific community, or it loses federal funding, which can be spent on those schools which actually impart knowledge upon their students.

One big difference between Newton with gravity and Darwin with evolution is that whenever you test the theory of gravity it works and whenever you try to find evidence of evolution there is virtually none.

If 99.99999% of the time things you let go of just hovered in place in front of you then you might call Newton as big a crackpot as Darwin.

A falling apple is a fact. We can observe it. Gravity is a scientific theory that explains why that apple falls to the ground. That is the difference. It makes no difference to me whether you accept this reality or not, but at least getting the truth out there is a good practice, IMHO.
