Independent voters broke heavily for Democratic House candidates Tuesday, as more than half of voters overall told pollsters they disapproved of the war in Iraq and the president’s job performance.
More broadly, the poll captured a pessimistic mood among voters, with more than half saying the country is on the wrong track. Fewer than a third of respondents said they believe they are better off financially than they were two years ago.
Incompetence has been rewarded.

Mike: Yesterday’s picture with the turkeys pointing fingers in the slaughterhouse might have suited the mood of today a little better. The cartoon’s clever and gets its point across well. Better, I suppose to show the Republicans driving off a cliff than to show them in a trainwreck or in the Titanic, although when this election is completed two years from now, it will seem like the wreck of the Titanic. Again, it’s well done. Lacks some of the snappy wit we’ve come to expect from you at your best, perhaps because it is a bit of a cliche.

Good Morning mike!
As promised, here are your yesterday-words (and mine) to eat with your morning cereal. {:-)
And I quote:
“November 7, 2006 09:02 AM, mike wrote:
It’s amazing to me that despite all of the anti-Bush, anti-Republcain sentiment, the Dems can’t even take back the Senate and might not even win the House. This just demonstrates that most Americans hold Democrats and liberals in contempt. What a bunch of losers.
I’m saving your comment for tomorrow. I will reprint it again. This is the first time I have felt some hope for a regime change. I think you are whistling in the graveyard of the NeoCons.
Now, for your labeling those with whom you disagree as “losers.”
Who lost Osama bin-Laden?”
So there are your words (and mine), mike: Eat up! Enjoy!
Now the thought for the day (to go with our yesterday words):
The regime hasn’t changed because the current president has no reason to change (he never makes mistakes, remember?). However, the majority of the folks he needs to deal with HAS changed significantly. I have no hopes that he will change, but I now have hopes that some change in the disaster in Iraq may occur, for the sake of the Iraqi people and for the sake our own troops.
Almost as many of our own troops have died in the invasion and occupation of Iraq as the number of those who died in 9/11, and Osama bin-Laden is still on the loose.
So for me, although I am delighted that the current president’s party has had a significant loss, I don’t think of them (or YOU, mike) as “losers.”
You folks just got what the Bible promises (Galatians 6:7-8), because you didn’t follow Paul’s advice (Galatians 6:9-10).
By Paul

I say this not taking sides:
Let’s watch and see how the Democratic majority conducts itself. No more excuses of “we didn’t even introduce this legislation (such as Medicare Drug price competition) because we knew it’d never get out of committee.” The ball’s in your court. No backtracking or reneging with the excuse “we didn’t put our hearts into this because we knew the President would veto and we don’t have the votes for an override.”
Democrats now have the responsibility they’ve wanted. Let’s see if they keep the commitments and are willing to take the accountability.
Two years from now, let’s see if things are much different.
This should be very interesting.

To believe that the Republicans politicos are evil and corrupt and the Democrats are without sin is like believing that Clinton “did not have sex with that woman”, or “did not inhale”. Be real; both sides suffer from the same weaknesses, it’s just a matter of who gets caught. If you don’t think Nancy and Hillary have some skeletons in their closets that would get them bounced you’re simply incapable of accepting the fact that the spectrum of human behavior has no party affiliation.

Paul (847) speaks, sense as does Diogenes at 835. If you want to talk dirt…..why is ethics committee holding back on the old Foley thing? If it was good news don’t you know it would be pasted from one end of the media to the other.
There is a history of bad behavior on all sides of the political spectrum. There has been no one who has said otherwise. Truer words were never spoken.
However, the folks that WERE in the majority in Congress liked to pretend that your words aren’t true, in order to gain the support of the Pharisees of the Christian Conservative Right.
Remember the Party of Christian (traditional/family) “values?” My hope is that the NEW majority won’t be quite so hypocritical, but since your words are true, maybe not.
Anyway, the current president is in a new ballgame. Perhaps the former “owner” of the Texas Rangers will learn to “play ball” with the new majority. But then again, maybe not.
The disaster in Iraq is not a “game.” Something needs to be done to get our troops out of harms way. My hope is that the new majority can pull it off, even given the “spectrum of human behavior” and a current president who doesn’t believe your words as they apply to him (he has never made a mistake, remember?)
My battlecry remains the same:
Get our troops out of Iraq on a timetable set by the Iraqis (not set by the U.S.), and NOT ONE MINUTE LATER!!

Democritus— no one is saying that the Dems are perfect… we all know the human factor here, and that power does corrupt. Democritus,
Granted. And do I beleieve that all, or even most, of the enormous problems facing this nation are just going to be easily fixed in record time?
Of course not.
But I am as optimistic as I have ever been, since Nixon resigned anyway, that our elected leaders MAY just take the lessons of the past few years to heart.
9/11 showed us all that for a brief moment in time, we can come together as one nation. We can put our mutual resolve to effecting the changes that best move this republic forward.
The onus is as much on the dems as on the gop now. If they also squander this chance to solve problems, and remain steadfastly partisan, the wheel will again turn.
If, however, they seize the day and put grudges and self interests aside, if they join in resolving immigration, security and fiscal issues, much good can happen in the next two years.
Do we dare get our hopes up?

Given a goodly number of new Democratic Congressmen/women are pretty moderate (in some districts, an important factor in defeating an incumbent Republican) we’ll see just how the interaction goes with the new Speaker. It may temper apprehensions of Republicans - and prove quite frustrating for the new leadership.
I’d like to toss out a semiserious proposal for our new Speaker. A previous poster noted there’s not a lot of time to produce results. That’s true. We have but a few months until we file our 2006 IRS forms. So -
Speaker Pelosi, given there won’t be substantive tax changes for a while, perhaps you’d like to set the example, doing not just the minimum the law requires, but doing what is consistent with your pronouncements. So, when you compute your taxes this year, perhaps you could compute them at the pre-tax cut rate. Better yet, perhaps you could dissolve your family trusts, designed to shield assets from tax. If not that, maybe you could compute the value of your trusts’ assets and freely offer to pay taxes at the highest marginal tax rate you’ve cited as “fair.” Senator Kennedy may want to join you in this and set an example of fair action for the rest of the Congress.
Then, while you’re introducing legislation to raise the minimum wage (which should have an excellent chance of passing) perhaps you could set the example for livable wages and worker rights by allowing your farm workers at your vineyards to form a union, without getting fired as they have in the past.
Accountability and personal example can be just a tad problematic, can’t they?

But democracy in America worked as it was intended, and that is something that we can promote. Let’s see if the Democrats are willing to risk 2008 with an extreme liberal agenda. Americans are still decent people at their core.

What scares me most is this: Islam is growing at a rapid pace. Their hatred of ANYTHING and ANYONE non-Muslim is profound and ingrained from earliest childhood. As the daughter of a suicide-bomber said on TV the other night “these people will not rest, EVER, until the flag of Islam flies over Washington and London.” As much as the Dems want to call this “scare tactics”, it is fact. 9/11 was not a “scare tactic”…and the fact that we have not been attacked again since 9/11 was the best reason of all not to change things in Washington. But the short attention span of the average American produces such results, where 9/11 is now a distant memory to be forgotten. Like it or not, today is a victory to the terrorists, who will undoubtedly be emboldened by the results.

OK then Andy. Riddle me this:
The war costs _. I’ll say ~$340BILLION DOLLARS. I’m sure you have your own #’s…. feel free to use THAT #.
In order to PAY for this clusterfu… I mean WAR… it takes tax dollars. Yes? Correct? Am I talking in a foreign tongue?
HOW exactly do you expect the all wise and all knowing ‘Shrub’ to pay for it all then, if NOT to raise taxes? Did you have an extra billion lying around somewhere? Does ol’ Gee Golly Dub? Anyone?
Bush was exactly right: “The Democrats are still determined to raise your taxes, and if they gain control of the Congress, they can do so without lifting a finger.”
Dems ARE determined to raise taxes. How else does the largest quagmire in HISTORY get paid for? I don’t see Halliburton ponying up the dough. Its got to be paid for SOMEHOW right?
What is the Repugnicant line? How does $340BILLION get paid? Do we run out to Texass and shake the trees on Daddy’s lawn and watch cash fall to the ground? No? Surely there’s a plan in place. All wise and knowing Gee Golly Dub has the cash hidden away for pre-2008 election days? It will magically appear and this “war” will be paid in full and Repugnicans everywhere will rejoice! The great and clever ‘Shrubby’ has saved us again!… YEAH. Right.
Go ahead. WOW me by NOT answering a thing I’ve posed to you… I’ll be shocked right along with everyone else reading this.
You’re “all blow and no go” just like every other Hannity/Rush/Kimmer windbag out there. You can p!ss and moan and whine with the lot of them but do you EVER actually SAY anything? I’m gonna go out on a limb here and say…. NAHHHHH.

To Progressive Patriot,
Your comment, “Georgia will unfortunately stay Republican until we get serious about educating our children,” seems to ignore history. We’ve been 49th or 50th since the Talmadge administration. I’ve seen little or nothing that would persuade me that Sonny is willing to make the radical changes needed to get out of the bottom tiers. To attempt to do so would mean fighting the biggest, nastiest lobby in the state: the teachers union. The teachers don’t want to change because more of them would have to be literate in order to advance the state, and the teacher’s union could not stand for that.

I just learned of an incident in which people of color were denied the right to vote. My dear friend and her retired disabled military spouse had voted in the previous election and had not moved but their records were somehow lost. With them were two other black military retirees. I might add that this was in a predominantly republican district with a tight “House” race. One of those denied managed to get home and back with her registration card in time to vote; the other four were not even allowed to cast a provisional vote. Complaints have been filed, but their constitutional rights have been denied in this election.

WHAT IS NEXT?
Early this morning the Professor called me.
“You are still young and increasingly rich so that you can afford a taxi ride here and enjoy a first class breakfast. The election results deserve some serious commentary.”
I would not miss a session with the Proff on a date as important as the day after the elections of 2006.
Just to look at the table that Antoine, the Professor’s majordomo had prepared, almost erased the purpose of the visit. There was a tray with two pitchers of fruit juices and one with the nixtures favored by the Professor that included a blend of exotic fruit juices laced with Champagne. The table had fruit cocktail cups, small bowls with yogurt enhanced with small pieces of dried fruits, an enticing cheese plate, scrambled eggs kept warm on the elaborate frying pan, separate pans for Canadian Bacon, sausages, thin slices of Hungarian blood sausage, and the filet of sole gently fried in butter with champignon and chopped onion, and encouraged with white wine, asparagus tips and selected herbs.
“Well, Professor, the Dems are in. Now what?”
‘You really want to hear?”
“The breakfast has prepared me to hear the best and the worst. Let us have it Professor!”
Without preamble, he began listing the pending matters that the new congressional arrangement will have to face, and hopefully, review, rectify, resolve or improve. It took him about five minutes to list them all, or most of them.
“Professor they’ll need five consecutive terms to accomplish a fraction of the items you mention!”
“I am not implying that they act upon everyone of them. I am simply drawing a blue print. Remember the Egyptian Pharaohs, who dominated civilization for a good while, had a board of specialists that did nothing but enumerate matters that had to be considered. Their motto: ‘You can never solve the problem if you do not look at it”
“Dou you really think so, Professor?’
Of course. If you don’t believe me, ask your doctor!”

To Ed Lorenzo,
Of course, I agree with you, Ed. I’ve been fighting this battle since Talmadge. I lived in Oregon for several years. Oregon ranks in the top 10 in literacy year after year. It is so pleasant to work with people who can write intelligible memos, instructions, letters to clients, and all the written bricabrac of a normal work day. When I returned to Georgia, I suffered from severe culture shock. I couldn’t make sense of my assistant’s memos. Needless to say, I had to replace him with someone who coud read and write (and spell) just so we could go on with the business of the day. Until grassroots Georgia says, “That’s enough,” it will never happen. And until it happens, Georgia will be regarded as backwards. There’s no other way about it. I’m surprised that employers aren’t screaming their bloody heads off about the quality of graduate they get here.

No, I don’t want to fall under Islamic extremists, but I believe the US is strong enough to resist them. To defeat them with our way of life and constitution in tact is a must. If we become like them with hatred, irrational religious dominance and loss of personal freedom, then they have won even if they don’t succeed in flying their flag in DC.

As I’ve been known to say before, the repression of evangelical christians is as terrifying to me as the repressions of the Taliban. It will Solomon, if there is one in the US, to untangle the mess at the Pentagon. Let me quote from today’s article in the AJC (“Pentagon caught in religiouss battle”), “… with one set of plaintiffs contending that the Pentagon is suppressing evangelical Christianity and another set arguing just the opposite — that the brass gives the most aggressive evangelicals free rein to proselytize in uniform.” The next thing you know, they will be wearing their saffron robes, beating their tambourines, and waylaying people in airports.

The wingnuts have one thing right. The ball is now in the Democratic Party corner. “Had Enough?” worked great as a campaign slogan, but it’s not an agenda. And if the party spends all it’s time on the misdeeds of BushCo, it’s doomed.
The next two years are going to be SO much fun!
This election has certainly thrown a monkey wrench into BushCo’s plan to build an “Imperial Presidency”. Cheney and Rumsfeld, both veterans of the Nixon-Ford terms, wanted to institutionalize the pre-Watergate presidency of Tricky Dick; the one that regarded the Bill of Rights as so much litter. That’s going to be a lot harder now. Good.
And there’s a nice sense of justice in knowing that what BushCo saw as a tool to advance this agenda (the pointless Iraq War) turned into it’s worst enemy.
Any truth to the rumor that Karl Rove’s in the White House dog house? His plan to pay off Mark Foley and engineer a backlash against the Democrats (revealed here by Andy!! Shhhh!!) failed miserably.

To Mark and Diogenes,
Your’re both right it does work. The little ripple yesterday is nothing compared to the paroxyisms which accompanied the reign of Lyndon and the criminality of Dick. The form of government survived and has prospered since those perilous times. One of the magnificent achievements of the framers of the Constitution was a form of government that has sufficient checks and balances to survive the little revolution we had yesterday and the major revolutions of the Johnson and Nixon era. Unlike ancient Rome, which had to have civil war to change administrations, we do it like we change our shirts. It is the greatest form of government ever conceived for all its fits and starts.

Murtha would be a poor choice. Despite a distinguished record of service as an active duty (and I believe, Reserve) Marine and his assignment to Defense-related committees in Congress, his past comments about the Iraq situation would become the focus of attention - again.

A good point regarding “corporate welfare - subsidies - oil industry.” The idea of giving subsidies for operations to an industry experiencing astronomical profits (please everyone, I’ve heard the “but it’s only an n% profit” arguments - more fun with numbers) is ridiculous. But I’m interested - is your ire because they’re “oil companies?” Or is the basis the level of profits? Or is it tax breaks to corporations in general? In which case, do you also support elimination of say, crop subsidies (take a look sometime at the sugar industry - primarily Florida), airlines and other transportation-related industries, etc?

Hooray. This is a wonderful day. I hope that the House convenes hearings on all the corruption of the bush administration. Bush and his sycophants have raked in the dough to the detriment of our nation for way too long. It will take us a long time to dig out of the mess and to prosecute the criminals. (And, Andy, the housing bubble already started bursting well before this election. Nope, I don’t drink the stupid juice of which you seem to have a generous supply.
I do not think that patriotism requires blind subservience. But I do think that elected officials should be treated with respect, especially if they have served most of their lives in high office. I still believe Rumsfeld resigned because he thought it best for our country.
Rumsfeld received the same information as Congress and the President. I do not equate misinformation and poor decisions with lies and deceit.

Jenn— maybe you have an explanation for why Dubya and Rummy did not want to capture OBL in 2001?
The Bush administration has concluded that Osama bin Laden was present during the battle for Tora Bora late last year and that failure to commit U.S. ground troops to hunt him was its gravest error in the war against al Qaeda, according to civilian and military officials with first-hand knowledge
There no rhyme or reason for them to ignore this opportunity, other than the fact that they did not care and had already decided to divert military resources to invading Iraq instead.

Sigh. I do believe we’ve been through this before. As there’s no confusion (BTW - I fully reserve the right to change my mind or position as new information becomes available or as situations change. Just think opposite of ideologue or hyperpartisan).
Let’s see - I do believe you’d like me to list some of my “neocon, right-wing, neanderthal, antiprogressive” positions. Okay, let’s start with:
Antiterrorism: I’m pretty hardcore here. When an ideology makes it clear they feel it’s their God-bound duty to convert me, my parents, wife, kids, etc or kill us, I don’t have much patience for those who won’t fully engage.
Warfare is not law enforcement.
Dept of Def could use some severe restructuring. This was the source of Sec R’s difficulties pre-Iraq. He took on the political and corporate interests and was nearly forced out. You might not like the restructuring, though. Georgia could lose the logistics center at Warner-Robins. That’s a lot of jobs, taxes, etc. lost. I do not believe the DoD exists to serve as a jobs program for local politicians.
I pretty much think people should get to keep what they work for. Those at the low end should get some slack cut. I think a total tax rate of over half is confiscatory. As the religionists here might say “Hey Nancy, Hillary - God wants only a tithe (tenth) - why do you want more?” (Okay, it’s kinda fun to tweak your icons).
This country needs an energy policy. Presidents and Congresses since Carter have failed. All of them. We aren’t going to produce our way out.
Our education system is great for college prep, lousy for anything else. Some systems lose about half the kids as dropouts. This is a tradegy. Noncollege-bound graduates are ill-prepared. There needs to be a curriculum restructuring - nationally. A kid in a slum in Atlanta should have the same resources, quality of teachers, infrastructure as a kid living on Nob Hill in San Francisco. Got that, speaker Pelosi? Dismantle your local system, integrate with the unfortunates and help the kids. A kid’s chance in life should not be controlled by his parent(s) economic status.
Is that enough to get you started? Conservative enough for you? Now, as I’ve made no assumptions about your views, but I’ve tried (unsuccessfully) to coax the

I hope the Dems really will show their Repube colleagues what it means to be a grown-up good sport, and extend the hand of bi-partisanship to help end the Iraq quagmire, heal this country’s wounds, and start patching up the rifts with our allies. And to the poster who listed the Repubes’ achievements as “4.4% unemployment…Highest real wages in history…Highest home ownership levels in history…Stock market at sustainable record levels… Democracy in the Middle East.” Are you kidding??? That unemployment figure doesn’t take into account those who have stopped looking for work (some estimates count those numbers at between 2 and 2.5%), not to mention the underemployed (those folks who were laid off or downsized from jobs that paid higher wages than the lower paying ones they had to take after looking for longer than 8 months). Along with those high home ownership levels is the highest mortgage default rate in history, followed closely by the highest number of reported predatory lending investigations ever. Stock market highs? That’s easy— there’s a war; hardly sustainable. Democracy in the Middle East? Not really, unless you’re talking about Turkey, which the US had NOTHING to do with. Giving the Repubes credit for these things isn’t giving them credit for much, because they’re all phantom gains, pal. Better get your info from someplace other than Faux News and The New Republic.

Today in class we celebrated the democrat victory by having an “abortion clinic in every school” lesson where we had your kids take off their condoms and have unprotected carefree sex.
Every thing was going fine until your little Johny pointed out that we were discriminating against homosexuals since they can’t have abortions, so we called them transgenders and proclaimed them married.
Tommorrow we get out the coat hangers.

By Andy 4.4% unemployment.
I’ll give you that.
Highest real wages in history.
For whom? CEO’s salaries are growing by double digits. Wages for the shrinking middle class aren’t keeping up with inflation even when it’s this low.
Highest home ownership levels in >history.
Could be but where’s your source.
Stock market at sustainable record >levels.
Sustainable would require some time wouldn’t it?
Democracy in the Middle East.
Is that what you call that mess? You know, the one where their leader ordered our troops to take down the roadblocks searching for our men.
These are the things that degenerate >panty waist filthy mofo ing liberals >consider to be “damaging” our country.
Blah, blah, blah. The Andy venom machine in action. Couldn’t help yourself could you. When in doubt call names.
Get ready for recession, for plunging >home prices, for higher tax payments, >record interest rates and high >unemployment except for the teacher’s >union.
What could have caused that? Lets see, record deficits maybe?
All over a contrived media scam played >out with the full cooperation of the >same people that killed 3000 Americans >on 9/11.
Oh, again, it’s “The Media” but this time they’re in collusion with Al Qaeda. Sadly, someone will actually believe this.
Got rid of a dictator that was >harboring weapons of mass destruction >as admitted by the New York Times.
Even Bush has admitted there were no WMD. You really need to move on.
A war with historically low casualty >rates, lower than some BATTLES that >were fought in World War Two for a >whole entire war.
You forgot to add, lasting as long as WWII with no end in sight.
A false perception of a righteous >conflict that was fought to keep our >children from having to fight it.
See above. It ain’t over yet and NOBODY knows when it will be. As for righteous, lets see, no WMD, ignored info that supported that conclusion, ignored war simulations that predicted the current situation, forced generals to the side who disputed the propaganda this administration was selling. Help me out here.
And these silly a-ss perverts think if >we pull out of Iraq now, that will be >the end of it.

Here are the number of House seats lost by the President’s party in the 6th year of his presidency during the post-war period:
1958: Eisenhower—Republicans lost 48 seats 1986: Reagan—Republicans lost 5 seats 1998: Clinton—Democrats gained 5 seats
So only once in the last half century has the President’s party lost more than 30 seats in the second-term midterms.

Paul,
I read your 4:55 post and had questions/comments.
I tend to agree with your views on terrorism. However, I want to draw the line on loss of civil liberties. I don’t just accept what certain officials say is needed to fight that battle.
Definitely agree with you about the military not being a jobs program for local pols. It also bothers me a lot to see retired (or ex-) officers who influenced DOD purchasing suddenly working at Martin-Marietta, Boeing, etc.
As far as taxation, the average American worker has little or nothing to say about it. When top US execs earn 250-300 times more than the lowest paid worker, something is wrong. In Japan & Europe, the multiple is less than 100 (more like 50X-70X). And that addresses the problem at both ends (lower exec pay/perks…higher pay at the bottom). Just look at Nardelli (Home Depot). He didn’t founf the company, nor has he helped its stock (major AJC article about that subject). He just keeps raking it in. It’s obscene.
I disagree with you about education preparing students for college. I taught graduate school and found that the product of American public high schools was pathetic (math & language). Students from private schools are much more prepared. I agree that there is little for non-collegebound students. Many are better off joining the military in a guaranteed enlistment program (MRI Technician - enters civilian life with training & experience). Our education system can do much better.

N-GA Thank you for a thoughtful post. Mine was a highlight, somewhat scattergun approach. Amazes me the assumptions people make - hear one view on one subject and extrapolate to everything.
Couple clarifications:
My views on terrorism/civil liberties was regarding non-citizens who do not qualify for Geneva Convention protections. Given they don’t qualify, we need to come up with procedures to handle. Congress/Executive just did that. There will likely be tweaks but that’s the nature of the system. As the latest trial showed - we were lurching with how we handle a foreign national, in the US, engaged in war against US with no government sponsorship. New ground here.
Last I knew, military officers with direct responsibility for procurement were prohibited for a certain period from obtaining civilian employment related to their prior duties (whew). Don’t know if still true - or if strictly enforced. Recent scandal with AF senior procurement official and Boeing makes me think not - on both counts. Personally, I’d ban general officers and civilian equivalents from any boards, positions, etc. related to their prior military duties for say, oh, five years. Course, I’d do the same for Congresspersons and staffers regarding lobbying.
Your Home Depot example is a good idea of theory of free markets, shareholder votes, etc. vs. the reality.
I didn’t mean to say secondary education does not prepare students for college - just that that is the major emphasis - which leaves a lot of kids behind, for both their interests and abilities. I’m big on vo-tec and others in secondary education.
Thanks - I must run - company coming for dinner, got to be home before the wife and get in the kitchen to start cooking (another neocon characteristic, Goldie).
More tomorrow -

Karl Rove’s mobilize the base, scare people with terrorism, scare people with higher taxes, go as negative as possible strategy.

Re,
In regards to your 3:52.
I too watched quite a bit of the coverage last night on Fox. I was amazed to see Hume smiling and laughing more than ever. But it was that sort of uncomfortable laugh that Ann Coulter uses all the time. Too funny watching Kristol et al try as hard as humanly possible to not let it show how they were just dying inside…
Also, because today heralds new changes, I decided to do something I haven’t done in 5 to 10 years - listen to talk radio!
First Boortz. I was able to handle him for about 10 minutes until he bullied the first caller I heard, muted her and accused her of doing the exact same thing he does everyday! Truly hysterical that he hasn’t changed one iota in all of those years and that people still find him relevant.
Then Laura Ingraham. This one doesn’t even pretend to play nice! Just more far right wing drivel. About 3 minutes was all I could stomach.
Oh well, I tried…
Rumsfeld is gone. Along with last night’s results, that is very good news for the country. Even Bush now knows that this nation is going to demand some real improvements and results from this administration.
I missed his press conference this afternoon. Anything else sifgnificant?

There was discussion this morning about the state of education in Georgia despite all of Sonny’s brave words about improving it. Georgia has ranked at or near the bottom (always bottom 5) as long as the rankings have been published (at least the 60’s and maybe longer than that). Every governor we’ve had in that period, say Carl Sanders to Sonny, has promised to improve educational achievement in Georgia. It hasn’t happened, and probably will not happen in this century either.

Had to log on - quick note - topic near and dear to many here -
Heard O’Reilly’s having on the attorney for a doctor in Kansas who does late-term (1-3 weeks of delivery date) for $5,000 - states women are depressed. Also does abortions for 10-12 year olds, then does not report to authorities (required by law) so rapists/abusers can be prosecuted. Doctor also funneled hundreds of thousands of dollars to PACS to defeat the Attorney General who was investigating.
Should be interesting - more source material - be interesting to see if O’Reilly got it right and if the lawyer sounds like a moral person or not.

Whether O’Reilly got it right or not, he is still guilty of a very serious breach of ethics. Abortion clinics are assured of privacy by law; someone has violated the law to give O’Reilly the material. He sold his soul (and maybe the souls of several others) to get the story. If the material was that solid, he should have taken it to the DA, not made it public nationwide. Before the trials are over, the privacy of a lot of innocent people will be invaded.

Diogenes,
Your 5:58 reminded me of a story I heard not long ago from a friend of mine who is a teacher.
He told me about a young, well spoken, highly qualified black woman who joined the school.
After she ahd been there for a short period of time, guess what some of her black studenst asked her? Ms. So and So, how come you talk so white?”
Granted this is one story that is directly related to young black students but I believe the problem transcends races and cultures.
As long as learning is not valued and as long as being dumb as a rock is seen as no big deal and often viewed as being cool, the problems are not going anywhere fast.
What ever happened to the message that being smart is cool?
