How soon we forget that Ole Jimmy Carter with the blessing of “Bubba” Clinton negotiated the deal with the North Koreans which led to the debacle and that when Barney Frank and Gary Studds were caught in this same sort of sex scandal back in the early 1980s, both were reelected gladly with the blessings of the Democrat leadership and noone resigned. Ah liberal Democrat, the mirror has two faces and the hydra many heads.

If I was a left-wing hyperpartisan I’d raise my fist in the air and shout “yes!.” If I was a right-wing hyperpartisan I’d point my finger and say “Well, what about Democrat leaders who (fill in the blank).”
I’m a bit disappointed in this cartoon - perhaps his point was to illustrate how Republican Congressional leadership has pretty well mishandled this entire Foley case and - wait - this doesn’t specify Foley. It’s just Republican leadership in general. Well, I guess Mr. Luckovich has gone from illustrating Republicans in an ill light on specific issues to just casting them in an ill light in general. Maybe there aren’t any new issues that illustrate the concept - Foley and Iraq are getting repiticious. Or maybe he just wanted to get out early for the holiday weekend.

More importantly, Prime Minister Maliki will have to use his bully pulpit to forge the broad political compromises that are essential to long-run peace. A key issue here is what to do with Iraq’s oil wealth. There has been a lot of talk about Sunni opposition to federalism, or strong regional governments. But the Sunnis are primarily worried that strong Kurdish and Shiite regions would hoard Iraq’s mineral resources; Sunnis would probably appreciate some autonomy in Anbar province if they were assured they wouldn’t be deprived of funds as a result.-OpinionJournal

Needless to say, the Bush administration was blamed for not creating enough jobs to meet forecasts. The headlines about low job levels meant that administration’s economic policies, in particular tax cuts, were not working. With the new data, job creation exceeded the Administration forecast of 175,000 jobs per month in 2005. If the undercounting continues, the economy is well on its way also to exceed the 2006 job forecasts.-NYSun

We can parse out every element of former Republican Congressman Mark Foley’s behavior that sickens normal, decent Americans and find that these elements are today, in one form or another, a generally accepted part of everyday life in the country. We can thank liberals for this state of affairs, and these liberals are Democrats. In the world of the Democratic left, the only intolerance is intolerance.-TownHall

In the wake of the Foley revelations, it is social conservatives who are taking the heat. This is entirely wrongheaded. If the Republicans do indeed lose the House, they will lose it because the party has capitulated too much to social liberalism.-RealClearPolitics

Bush and the GOP ringmasters were hoping for something to push Foley off the front page.
They’ve got it. North Korea, and how the Bush administration’s policies pushed that unpredictable sociopath Kim Jong Il into the nuclear weapons club.
Oh, they would have had the bomb sooner or later, unless Kim has died or something. Make no mistake. But if it weren’t for Bush’s pig-headedness, it might not have happened until after he left office. Certainly not 29 days before the elections.
It’s also apparent that Bush was so obsessed with the phantom dangers posed by Iraq that he ignored far more serious threats posed by North Korea. And Iran.

Bon Scott: Please back up 5 years. Or ten. Or however many. And Bush (or Clinton, or Kerry, or anyone who did/might have occupied the White House) should not have “ignored the far more serious threats posed by North Korea” and should have done what, exactly? Seriously, I’d like to hear what could have/should have been done. Or, in Iran’s case (prior to testing a device) - should be done.

I must be psychic. I had a cartoon comment on the old cartoon before the new cartoon was even posted. Here it is, in a slightly altered form:
[But as far as culpability in the Foley case, Mr. Dunn said, House Republicans may benefit from the evangelical conception of sin. Where liberals tend to think of collective responsibility, conservative Christians focus on personal morality. “The conservative Christian audience or base has this acute moral lens through which they look at this, and it is very personal,” Mr. Dunn said. “This is Foley’s personal sin.”] (http://www.nytimes.com/2006/10/09/us/politics/09conservatives.html?ei=5090&en=c1f50470c9270cce&ex=1318046400&partner=rssuserland&emc=rss&pagewanted=print)
Liberals, ML being one of them, believe in the tenet of “Collective responsiblility” -just like life on the commune.
Conservatives (and this does not require an Evangelical view) believe in “individual responsibility”.
Bonnie Scott Sybil,
You of all people are walking on thin ice when you complain about other people being “obsessed”.
Are we now to believe that Bush is delighted that North Korea took Foley off the front page? What policies do you recommend Bonnie Sybil? Unilateral talks with the sociopathic Communist tyrant?
Maybe Bush can grow a beard and pretend to be Sigmund Freud.

Buy Danish,
I’m not sure “took Foley off the front PAGE” is the best choice of words.
This does show a contrast though, all the Democrats can do is try to magnify a case of human failing into a full blown (probably my contribution to the bad choice of words) national scandal, while Republicans try to work to install and test missile defense and work with our allies to address Iran and North Korea all the while establishing beacons of hope in the Middle East.
Your choice on November 7th comes down to substance or show. If you want substance you will vote Republican in 2006, but in 2008 it’s time to get some real conservatives to challenge the sitting Republicans in the primaries.

Hey Honu, you see David Warren this week?:
The matter came up because the head of a police union (Michel Toomis of Action Police) had appealed to the French government to supply his members with armoured cars, to patrol certain Muslim neighbourhoods. Among other things, he mentioned that, “We are in a state of civil war, orchestrated by radical Islamists. This is not a question of urban violence any more, it is an intifada, with stones and Molotov cocktails.”
Interesting, the supreme pinko apologists need armored cars in their own country.

RW,
I was just quoting Bonnie Scott!
Gadem,
I’m just reading the New York Times, dude. That’s where I got the brilliant analogy.
If Republicans blamed Democrats “collectively” it would be because Clinton did not accept personal responsibility, perjured himself in front of a Federal Grand Jury, did not resign, blamed it on a vast right wing conspiracy, and the Dems “collectively” all cheered him on with a chorus of “It’s just about sex!”.
Contrast that with Foley who immediately resigned…for sending IM messages to an adult former Page, AND the fact that no one is condoning Foley’s behavior or cheering him on.

Summary: James Dobson and Daniel Henninger both echoed a claim previously made by Matt Drudge and Michael Savage that the sexually explicit communications that Rep. Mark Foley allegedly engaged in with former congressional pages were “sort of a joke” or a “prank” on the part of the former pages. While Foley may have immediately resigned, according to some, Republicans would rather blame the kids. In the opinion of others it’s not about Clinton, or even Foley. It’s about what they feel is Republican leaders not responding appropriately when informed of Foley’s shenanigans.

Actually, it’s the Republicans who are hurting their own party over this scandal. Their reaction has been to accuse eachother of apathy, ignorance and stonewalling.
Uncontrolled political cannibalization. Democrats sit in the stands and grin.
A casualty of the Mark Foley cyberspace sex scandal is the once-close relationship between Illinois Republicans Rep. John Shimkus and House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert.
Moreover, Hastert’s team, by asking Shimkus to appear at a press conference with the speaker in Washington last Monday — but not letting him take questions — made a bad situation for Shimkus worse.
“I am now,” said Shimkus when we talked last week, “a little jaded.”
Jaded?? How about paranoid??
A very cautious Shimkus taped our phone conversation and said it was now his standard operating procedure for all of his interviews.
Democrats are now an afterthought to the GOP leadership, which is too busy dodging knife thrusts from other Republicans, who themselves are consumed with watching their own backs.
And then there are the voters.

Don’t know why everyone’s freaking out about N.Korea. It was entirely predictable. It was also entirely predictable/knowledgeable that the Iraqis had no interest whatever in “democracy,” have always hated the U.S. and West. Never ever gonna accept democracy. Yet we’re gonna shove it down their throats at the point of a gun. Could never work, should never work. Busy for thousands of years hating & slaughtering each other. Yet the drunken maniac Bush thought he’d gain a bit of fame by invading. His mighty army can’t even defeat a group of untrained civilians. His father before him assembled a huge coalition which fought against…nothing and no one. Tanks rolling thru the countryside, opposed by no one and nothing. And the troops were called “heroes.” And “Victory Parades” were held endlessly over that great farce. Now drunken Bush and the Republiscum will use N. Korea as “Now we need experienced men in Congress - who can work in these dangerous times with an experienced wartime (Oh Geesuss!) president.” The chimp is experienced in boozing, lying, being AWOL, being technically a deserter. Stand proud all you Repugs. It’s getting better and better. The Chinese have for 50 years called the U.S. a “paper tiger.” They are correct. What else, with the election of putridity like the Chimp. NAMBLA, he says, “is actively training their members how to rape children and get away with it. Seriously, I’d like to hear what could have/should have been done.
ou did what CLinton did in 1194, that kept the nuke facilities shut until 2002. You use diplomacy. Bush owns this debacle.
Clinton lied in front of a civil jury. There was no obstruction of justice. What he should of done is what Gingrich and Barr did, which was to refuse to answer the question. There was a vast rightwing conspiracy and it spent over 70 million dollars to find out that Clinton got a blow job from a consenting adult. Many Dems found the president’s adultry a problem, and said so. However it pales in comparison to what Bush and his cronies have done in office- the lies, wars, pedofiles, no-bid contracts, deficit increase, gay “journalists,” and blatant corruption.
Correction: The facts as we know it in the Foley case so far show that there was no contact with a “juvenile” with the exception of the email to the Lousiana Page, which was not explicit - just weird.
Foley asked explicit questions about sex and body parts, even requesting a page to get a ruler. SOme of these were with 16 year-olds. This is the type of behavior Foley actually helped craft laws against! Trying to defend him know just show that you wingnuts will go to any length of hypocrisy to try and hold onto power.
Foley resigned. Clinton didn’t. Can you explain the difference to me?
Clinton had sex with a consenting adult. It was not against the law.
Foley is a sexual predator pursuing teenage boys. The emails and IMs are not alone. He showed up at the page’s dorm drunk before. His whole pattern of behavior show what used to be called a “chicken hawk.” Not the Bush kind of chicken hawk, but the kind of older creepy man who chases young teenage boys chicken hawk. It is morally wrong, frequently legally wrong, and just plain sick. However BuyDanish, if you want to keep defending NAMBLA, which is what you are doing, be my guest. I bet NAMBLA gives a number of campaign contributions to the GOP every year. Has your membership card expired? Better check!

More GOP cannibalization as documented by Robert Novak:
The survival of J. Dennis Hastert as speaker of the House of Representatives will produce an uncomfortable scene Thursday at the Hilton Chicago. President Bush is the principal attraction at a reception to fund congressional candidates in two suburban Chicago districts — once thought safely Republican but where Democrats now lead. In the wake of the Mark Foley scandal, Hastert’s presence at the reception will be an embarrassing distraction.
Do tell!
The speaker seems certain, unwittingly, to take attention away from the congressional candidates. As the most prominent Republican officeholder in Illinois, Hastert could not be removed from this event, as he has been from five congressional campaigns as of this writing.
Oh sugar!! Darn it all!! Well, Hastert might as well show up for the food. It won’t make a difference.
“It’s really moot,” one of Hastert’s most severe Republican critics (who would not be identified) told me. “We are sure to lose the House, and Denny never would want to be minority leader.”

LHU,
According to ABC news, he resigned because of explicit IMS. We now know that those IMs were to a 21 year old adult. We also now know that he had sex with at least one FORMER page who was 21.
Is that too difficult for YOU to comprehend?
Maybe he resigned because the behavior is not befitting a Congressman, even if it is technically legal and is not technically “sexual harrassment”?
I’m not a mind-reader so I can’t speak for Foley, but history has shown that Democrats don’t resign for similar or worse behavior.
Can you explain that to us? Do try to do it without getting on Bonnie Scott’s bandwagon and accusing us all of being “drunks”.

Hi Andy – as always, thank you.
Didn’t know if you’ve had a chance to read “America Alone.” David Warren’s article ties in nicely with the message in Mark Steyn’s book. (But where Mr. Steyn tempers his messages with humor, Mr. Warren’s in-your-face style is sure to bring him more hate mail today.) He speaks the truth, however — appeasement and tolerance of the Muslim fanatics in the European communities is simply not working, and it really is only a matter of time before it stops working here in our country.
I read a great article this weekend by Lawrence Wright, written in 2004 for New Yorker magazine, entitled “The Kingdom of Silence.” It’s a startling look at where the “total domination” mindset of a militant Muslim stems from, what they’re running from by leaving their own countries and what they hope to achieve once settled into our communities. Quite an eye-opener and I can so empathize with their plight – hundreds and hundreds of years of oppression and living in abject poverty, wanting only to rise up out of it and make a difference and be noticed, while trying to maintain their identity.
However; we weren’t and aren’t their oppressors, and our country cannot afford to allow the current generation of radical “Islamists” to achieve this recognition at the expense of our freedoms and Christian beliefs. And sadly, it does come full circle to Mr. Warren’s point today – “The majority of European [and American] Muslims…trying to fit in are irrelevant to this developing story.” (Developing being the operative word.)
Hi Buy Danish - credit to you for pointing me towards Lawrence Wright. Perhaps there’s a new book in someone’s future :-)

Hey Honu: I hate replying in this forum because I know the mouth breathing savages in here will soon be attacking you, but I wanted to add to the point^^ the you made:
The Europeans and Americans who are trying to “fit in” with radical Islam will also become irrelevant, so to speak.
Sadly so.

Cartoon idea: Show Bush walking along the white house lawn followed by his dog, who holds a pooper scooper, and the piles W is leaving behind for the dog to scoop up are labeled, “Iraq”, “Iran”, “Foley”, and “N. Korea”. (show a mushroom frowing out of the N. Korean pile)
Also, show a sign that reads, “pets are responsible for their owner’s messes”.

Honu,
You lack an understanding of history if you think we have not been the oppressors of Muslims. Whether it was western European powers during the crusades or our own involvement helping the Shah repress Iranians for decades, there are well-established reasons for some of their hatred towards us. It’s not all justified, and terrorism is never justified, but we have also done things that aren’t justified. If we would get out of their face and end our involvement in the Middle East, with the possible exception of supporting Israel in extreme circumstances, the whole world would be a better place. But we can’t do that because of our dependence on oil, and the petroleum companies that pull the strings in the republican party won’t allow it.

Aboriginal, when you repeat lies, it’s unwise to do so when it’s a simple matter to refute them:
The 9/11 Commission report concludes that Sudan never offered bin Laden to the United States. Also, Clinton did not admit at any time to any Sudanese offer of bin Laden.
Your other Clinton fibs can be sliced and diced just as easily.
Ya know, this intense preoccupation with Clinton as the GOP crumbles is painful to watch. Whining over your revisionist take on the past while ignoring the pus filled sores in your party today won’t win any votes in 29 days.

Your Sunday (cartoon?) depicting Republicans as all the same was disgusting and an outright lie. No Republican that I am aware of offered up excuses for the bad behavior of our Florida Senator. Not one!!! On the other hand every time a Democrat is caught doing something bad the Democrats, and the liberal press come riding in and attempt to make them a cult hero. The most amazing thing is that they are also almost always re-elected. Imagine that, re-elected.
We are not angry that this person was caught, or that he was punished too severely, but rather that the Democrats never do the right thing.

Buy Danish: thanks for the clarification - I hadn’t recalled that.
Couple of thoughts, some serious, some less so -
People rather expected it of Clinton. There were indications during his governorship, surely during the primary. So when it comes out in the open, well, what did we expect. It wasn’t really a secret, now, was it?
Foley, on the other hand, has hints of hypocrisy to it. He’s a Republican, for pete’s sake. Republicans don’t fornicate, commit adultery, and they’re never ever gay. So with Foley, everybody’s really shocked. And the way it was handled, well, again, during the Clinton years we expected the denials and coverups to be artfully and skillfully done. So when they did occur, well, the public could at least nod and say “we didn’t expect anything less.”
But the Republican leadership’s handling of the Foley situation has been horrible. I mean, these are the guys who run corporations, know the art of business and politics, and they’re supposed to handle it well. Jettison the flotsam and protect the shareholders. So the public and the opposition party are, it seems, outraged, just outrated.
There are also parallels to the shocking revelations about how radical Muslims commit atrocities and the comparisons made to some unfortunate situations with the American military and intelligence agencies. You see, the world expects such conduct of the radical Muslims. For them not to behave this way would be astonishing. They rise to the lowest expectations every time. The Americans, on the other hand, are naturally assumed to be far above their enemies on a moral and practical. So when breaches do occur, there is shocked, apoplectic gasping and recriminations. Because the superior moral wall has been breached.
Well, I’m off for some cardio workout. Have a wonderfully pleasant evening.

WASHINGTON — Four weeks before congressional elections, a new USA TODAY/Gallup Poll shows Democrats hold a 23-point lead over GOP candidates. That’s double the lead Republicans had a month before they seized control of Congress in 1994. President Bush’s approval rating was 37%, down from 44% in a Sept. 15-17 poll. The approval rating for Congress was 24%, down 5 points from last month.

bon scott,
I like the name, by the way. I’m a big AC/DC fan, too. I’ll be going away for a couple weeks and I noticed you’ve taken to calling Buy Danish “Granny” from time to time, so I thought I’d leave you some info into the origin of it. Katherine Anne Porter has a short story entitled, “The Jilting of Granny Weatherall.” Granny Weatherall reminded me of Danish- a strong woman, but ornery, argumentative, bitter, combative, and she thinks she’s always right. She goes through life degrading people with the satisfaction that she is holy and Jesus will come take her away upon her death. By calling her Granny I was trying to impart upon BD how utterly misguided she is to the core of her belief system, that she too would be jilted many times over. Another thing that seemed to aggravate Granny Danish was that Porter actually socialized with socialists and communists. Then the last twist of the screw was my estimation that Granny Danish is somewhere between 43 and 49 years old, and no woman her age wants to be referred to as Granny. Good luck and have fun with the repugs.
