ANOTHER CONSERVATIVE TURNS ON W

this time it’s christopher buckley

Bob Woodward asked Bush 43 if he had consulted his father before invading Iraq. The son replied that he had consulted a higher father. That frisson you feel going up your spine is the realization that he meant it. And apparently the higher father said, Go for it! There are those of us who wish he had consulted his terrestrial one; or, if he couldnt get him on the line, Brent Scowcroft. Or Jim Baker. Or Henry Kissinger. Or, for that matter, anyone who has read a book about the British experience in Iraq. (18,000 dead.)

Who knew, in 2000, that ‘compassionate conservatism’ meant bigger government, unrestricted government spending, government intrusion in personal matters, government ineptitude, and cronyism in disaster relief? Who knew, in 2000, that the only bill the president would veto, six years later, would be one on funding stem-cell research? A more accurate term for Mr. Bush’s political philosophy might be incontinent conservatism….

Despite the failures, one had the sense that the party at least knew in its heart of hearts that these were failures, either of principle or execution. Today one has no sense, aside from a slight lowering of the swagger-mometer, that the president or the Republican Congress is in the least bit chastened by their debacles. George Tenet’s WMD ‘slam-dunk,’ Vice President Cheney’s ‘we will be greeted as liberators,’ Don Rumsfeld’s avidity to promulgate a minimalist military doctrine, together with the tidy theories of a group who call themselves ‘neo-conservative’ (not one of whom, to my knowledge, has ever worn a military uniform), have thus far: de-stabilized the Middle East; alienated the world community from the United States; empowered North Korea, Iran, and Syria; unleashed sectarian carnage in Iraq among tribes who have been cutting each others’ throats for over a thousand years; cost the lives of 2,600 Americans, and the limbs, eyes, organs, spinal cords of another 15,000 — with no end in sight. But not to worry: Democracy is on the march in the Middle East….

What have they done to my party? Where does one go to get it back? One place comes to mind: the back benches. It’s time for a time-out. Time to hand over this sorry enchilada to Hillary and Nancy Pelosi and Joe Biden and Charlie Rangel and Harry Reid, who has the gift of being able to induce sleep in 30 seconds….

My fellow Republicans, it is time, as Madison said in Federalist 76, to Hand over the tiller of governance, that others may mess things up for a change.

I don’t remember a Lucko posting years back saying another lib turns on Clinton. Why this post? Are you not a cartoonist, or have you become an biased opinion editor as well? Don’t answer…we all know.

Shawny,

Why can’t you grasp a simple concept.

Your beloved Pres is a liar, a fool, and an embarassment to the majority of the country.

Deal with it. Or better yet, move.

Heh, never knew Mike was a Republican. So there are some left who actually look at reality. Wow. There may yet be hope for this party.

Shawny, this is called an “editorial cartoon”. The “editorial” part means that the cartoonist has an opinion. Deal with it.

Perhaps that’s because Clinton never caused thousands of deaths. Perhaps that’s because Clinton was smart and personable, not given to smirking at those who disagreed with him. Perhaps that’s because Clinton, despite any personal faults, was actually good for our country…

Shawny, this is called the editorial page - meaning even the cartoonists have a politcal bent.

And instead of answering the question, why do you focus on the past, and the possibility that is isn’t fair that he didn’t say the same about Clinton, in fact what does Clinton have to do with this?

This is a conservative, worried about the direction of his beloved party under its current leadership, and you immediately attempt to avoid the question and spin it towrds a right/left debate.

How sad you are, to be so programmed in your thought processes. You’ve responded exactly as they have taught you to.

I tell you what. Let’s let Luckovich do editorials and Bookman do cartoons. Bookman can’t draw and Luckovich can only quote others. But nobody will tell the difference. Liberals will say it is wonderful without even looking. Thus goeth the AJC to liberal lala land without a bit of professionalism. Just liberal propaganda.

He didn’t have to use quotation marks. It’s the first line of the column.

Interesting. Another apparent conservative responds by not answering or even mentioning the topic - but instead calls it liberal propaganda. When, again, the blog is about a well-known conservative who disagrees with the current party that represents him.

Much like Zell Miller”s “I didn’t leave the Democratic party, the democratic party left me.” It seems Buckley is saying, “I didn’t leave the Republican party, the Republican party left me.”

What gives two conservatives and neither broach the subject of the blog - just try and start the hate fest.

Aren’t you guys kind of tired of blaming liberals for everything? Hell, the party has controlled all three branches of government for the past six years.

The majority of the country doesn’t feel positive about the future of the republic. That’s OUR fault.

We’ve ripped the Sunni curtain that was holding down the most radical Shia’. The President of the United States has to sneak into the country but the prime minister of Iran can visit Ayatollah Sistani with not even a worry. Something’s wrong there.

This isn’t partisan, it’s the survival of the nation. Any moderate Arab leader (read Sunni) is now outside of the mainline Arab thought. We brought that on, stop blaming the Dems.

True, “crusty” is the queen cheerleader for w.

She has never posted anything except rah, rah, razz for w and calling people unpatriotic when they do not agree with her bs.

She would have made an excellent Nazi. BTW, what did they do with all the Nazi appeasers?

Rather than hand the governance over to the party that originated big government, why don’t we vote Libertarian and send the republicrats a message. That’s what I’ll be doing.

Let us not fool ourselves into thinking the Middle-East was stable, or Iran, N. Korea and Syria required empowering to pursue their ambitions. They were well on their way prior to Iraq’s liberation.

Never the less, we are Americans, we want our gratification and results now. We are unwilling to pursue a long term strategy to see if people in the Middle-East will embrace freedom and representative government. Heck most of us can’t even think in the long term and prefer to pursue the status quo.

Also, is my understanding wrong, in that Bush does not have the privilege of the line item veto? But rather he is forced to veto an entire bill.

Midori,

You can’t possibly be this stupid. This post says {{{ANOTHER CONSERVATIVE TURNS ON W}}}} and gives a brand spanking new story as evidence.

It’s quite clear that Christopher Buckley is saying that things are even worse in 2006 than they were in 2004.

Can’t argue with that.

In 2004, Buckley said he’d reluctantly vote for Bush and the GOP. But today? Good Lord, he’s given up.

I guess the difference between reluctant acceptance and outright surrender is a bit too nuanced for the typical neocon here.
