Goldie,
The Dixie Chicks have always had great music. Their last album in 2002 sold over a quarter million more units in it’s opening week release than this one.
Did KOS or DU just now tell you about them?

I never really understood the controversy surrounding the Dixie Chicks. All she said was something to the effect that she was embarassed that she was from the same state as W. Big deal. She didn’t like W. Its not like she went on and on about it. One little comment and folks went crazy.
I guess its because it was an international audience, but let me tell you, most non-americans don’t like W. Thats not a slight, thats a fact. It used to be that when you traveled to Europe, Africa, or South America, people treated you very warmly if they knew you were American. In the last 5 years, that has all changed. Maybe thats W’s fault and maybe it isn’t, but there is no denying that we are not very popular these days.

I was reminded of a great quote from the past earlier this week — same would apply today to our situation in Iraq:
“Somehow this madness must cease. I speak for those whose land is being laid waste, whose homes are being destroyed, whose culture is being subverted. I speak for the poor of America who are paying the double price of smashed hopes at home, and death and corruption in Viet Nam… The great initiative in this war is ours; the initiative to stop it must be ours.” M.L. King, Jr. — 1967
What a terribly sad place we find America in today— facing down a nuclear threat like Iran, and so much of our resources being wasted in a never-ending war in Iraq. Yes, “somehow this madness must cease” in order to save America — where are our true leaders to speak the truth today?!

These lofty ideals make him and the Iranians better than Bush, which is the underlying theme of the cartoon.

Who cares about the Dixie Chicks? Another issue the media has blown out of proportion. Once again Lucko makes a mockery of a serious issue. For months the left has been saying Bush hasn’t done enough to confront Iran. Now that we have made them a legitimate offer, they say it’s not good enough. Of course this is the same group that allowed the N Koreans to lie for 8 yrs while Clinton was in office about their nuclear program. There are some serious issues that this country is facing and we need serious ideas on how to confront them. We don’t need more name calling and political bullcrap.

I’ve always thought the Dixie Chicks were too close to the country music establishment to be taken seriously. What has passed for country music for the past fifty years is just lame pop music sung with a redneck twang ala Faith Hill, Shania Twain and all those male idiots with cowboy hats who are practically the same guy. To their credit, the Chicks seem to be moving in a more honestly pop direction. Truth be told, I don’t care much about their political statements one way or the other, but I do enjoy the way they push you rightwing creeps to new frontiers of nastiness.

Who cares about the Dixie Chicks? Obviously many people do since they sold over 1/2 million copies of their CD the 1st week. Radio stations are refusing to play the Chicks because of a vocal minority. Guess the number of music downloads on all the services and the great success in the sales of the CD reflect that. You who want to control the airwaves, go ahead. I will listen to my XM radio who plays the Chicks and not support local radio who refuses to play them.

Rolling Stone’s Politics.
By bobby
June 1, 2006 02:50 PM | Link to this
The controversary, if that is even the right word, with the Dixie Chicks stemmed from the fact that red state conservatives simply cannot tolerate a point of view that differs from theirs. It really p** them off. How’s this for irony: red state conservatives who support what we are doing in Iraq - our soldiers dying to enable Iraq to form a constitution - proudly thumb their noses at certain elements of the US Constitution, those elements which they do not understand, including free speech, separation of church and state, separation of powers, etc. But don’t touch my guns. That much they do understand.
How ‘bout this. Remember that town in Alabama that actually held a town-wide rally where they collected and destroyed Dixie Chick CDs and paraphenalia because of what they said? Shades of Nazi book burning, anyone?
Like I’ve said before, I don’t know what is worse - ignorance, or watching people happily wallow in their own ignorance.

bobby,
Let’s see if you can see a difference. On the one hand you have the Nazis forcing people to burn various books and publications under the threat of death should they decline. On the other hand you have a town that sponsors (actually a radio station, but I digress) a voluntary CD destruction to protest the Dixie Chicks.
I know the difference is very subtle, but see if you can noodle it out.

Jo Ro, if you’ve ever seen the Chicks perform live, you might agree that they’re a little different from some other C&W performers, in that they play some traditional instruments like fiddles and banjos. I do appreciate some good pickin’ & fiddlin’, but mostly, they’re different in that they were brave enough to speak their minds when so many in the C&W community wanted to stifle anyone who didn’t conform to their version of political correctness after Sept. 11th.

“Iraq is a long way from [here], but what happens there matters a great deal here. For the risks that the leaders of a rogue state will use nuclear, chemical or biological weapons against us or our allies is the greatest security threat we face.” —Madeline Albright, Feb 18, 1998
“He will use those weapons of mass destruction again, as he has ten times since 1983.” —Sandy Berger, Clinton National Security Adviser, Feb, 18, 1998
“[W]e urge you, after consulting with Congress, and consistent with the U.S. Constitution and laws, to take necessary actions (including, if appropriate, air and missile strikes on suspect Iraqi sites) to respond effectively to the threat posed by Iraq’s refusal to end its weapons of mass destruction programs.” Letter to President Clinton, signed by: — Democratic Senators Carl Levin, Tom Daschle, John Kerry, and others, Oct. 9, 1998
“Saddam Hussein has been engaged in the development of weapons of mass destruction technology which is a threat to countries in the region and he has made a mockery of the weapons inspection process.” -Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D, CA), Dec. 16, 1998
“Hussein has … chosen to spend his money on building weapons of mass destruction and palaces for his cronies.” — Madeline Albright, Clinton Secretary of State, Nov. 10, 1999
“There is no doubt that … Saddam Hussein has reinvigorated his weapons programs. Reports indicate that biological, chemical and nuclear programs continue apace and may be back to pre-Gulf War status. In addition, Saddam continues to redefine delivery systems and is doubtless using the cover of a licit missile program to develop longer-range missiles that will threaten the United States and our allies.” Letter to President Bush, Signed by: — Sen. Bob Graham (D, FL), and others, Dec 5, 2001
“We begin with the common belief that Saddam Hussein is a tyrant and a threat to the peace and stability of the region. He has ignored the mandate of the United Nations and is building weapons of mass destruction and th! e means of delivering them.” — Sen. Carl Levin (D, MI), Sept. 19, 2002
“We know that he has stored secret supplies of biological and chemical weapons throughout his country.” — Al Gore, Sept. 23, 2002
“Iraq’s search for weapons of mass destruction has proven impossible to deter and we should assume that it will continue for as long as Saddam is in power.” — Al Gore, Sept. 23, 2002
“We have known for many years that Saddam Hussein is seeking and developing weapons of mass destruction.” — Sen. Ted Kennedy (D, MA), Sept. 27, 2002
“The last UN weapons inspectors left Iraq in October of 1998. We are confident that Saddam Hussein retains some stockpiles of chemical and biological weapons, and that he has since embarked on a crash course to build up his chemical and biological warfare capabilities. Intelligence reports indicate that he is seeking nuclear weapons…” — Sen. Robert Byrd (D, WV), Oct. 3, 2002
“I will be voting to give the President of the United States the authority to use force — if necessary — to disarm Saddam Hussein because I believe that a deadly arsenal of weapons of mass destruction in his hands is a real and grave threat to our security.” — Sen. John F. Kerry (D, MA), Oct. 9, 2002
“There is unmistakable evidence that Saddam Hussein is working aggressively to develop nuclear weapons and will likely have nuclear weapons within the next five years … We also should remember we have always underestimated the progress Saddam has made in development of weapons of mass destruction.” — Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D, WV), Oct 10, 2002
“He has systematically violated, over the course of the past 11 years, every significant UN resolution that has demanded that he disarm and destroy his chemical and biological weapons, and any nuclear capacity. This he has refused to do” — Rep. Henry Waxman (D, CA), Oct. 10, 2002
“In the four years since the inspectors left, intelligence reports show that Saddam Hussein has worked to rebuild his chemical and biological weapons stock, his missile delivery capability, and his nuclear program. He has also given aid, comfort, and sanctuary to terrorists, including al Qaeda members … It is clear, however, that if left unchecked, Saddam Hussein will continue to increase his capacity to wage biological and chemical warfare, and will keep trying to develop nuclear weapons.” — Sen. Hillary Clinton (D, NY), Oct 10, 2002
“We are in possession of what I think to be compelling evidence that Saddam Hussein has, and has had for a number of years, a developing capacity for the production and storage of weapons of mass destruction.” — Sen. Bob Graham (D, FL), Dec. 8, 2002
“Without question, we need to disarm Saddam Hussein. He is a brutal, murderous dictator, leading an oppressive regime … He presents a particularly grievous threat because he is so consistently prone to miscalculation … And now he is miscalculating America’s response to his continued deceit and his consistent grasp for weapons of mass destruction … So the threat of Saddam Hussein with weapons of mass destruction is real…” — Sen. John F. Kerry (D, MA), Jan. 23. 2003

Goldie,
You should probably ask RE since it was his slogan, but since you asked.
A group of hostages in Iran were pretty happy to see Jimmy Carter tossed, I was getting pretty tired of waiting in three hour lines for five gallons of gas too.
Clinton took the country on a wild ride of appeasement and good time economics, but all that did was embolden terrorists to strike heavier and heavier blows and here at home he had no answer to the bursting of the dot com bubble other than to let the country fall into recession.
What usually happens is that a Republican comes in and does the heavy lifting which takes a lot of time and sacrifice. The country gets tired of the sacrifice and elects a Democrat just as the tough choices are beginning to pay off. Then it’s a few years of good time Charlie, but the Democrat doesn’t do anything to maintain the strength so we have to start the cycle over again.
It’s a thankless job, but don’t worry. We Republicans will continue to do the hard work and make the right choices for the good of everyone.

How dumb of country music radio to ignore the number one selling album on the country charts…well pretty dumb I must say. But, this is country raido we’re talking about, do the math. The Dixie Chicksd seem to be riding on a wave of popularity that W could benefit from, considering one would have to look under a rock to find his positive approval ratings they’ve sunk so low. I told my husband, a Bush supporter still, the only reason his supporters have bitten down and held onto the belief he’s a good president it the fact you all are too ashamed now to admit you followed that moron this long and he led you all into a wall of stupidity. I don’t see how anyone with an IQ above average room temperature can possibly think that confederacy of dunces in DC running this country is doing a good job. Well looking over the post today, most of the regular liberals have brought the same intelligent discussion forward. It goes like this; Republicrats are the root of all the countries problems because they don’t nurture world sympathy as self defense to allow them to continue America’s great experiment in social engineering. Never mind the extraordinary power dependency affords crooked politicians.
Goldie, I am actually very good at art but dropped it when teachers began pressuring me to pursue it. Now, I am in environmental engineering and would be depressed if my life’s achievement and education ended with being able to draw well. But ml, probably needs the positive re-enforcement to supplant his ego. As the rest of the world does task to create tangible goods and services ml draws us towards socialism, how depressing.
Goldie, can an individual be dependent and free at the same time, or will they always answer to their provider?

Scooter, One of the things you said was correct: “Republicans are the root of all the country’s problems.” You are learning (but not spelling- country’s, not countries; “the rest of the world does task”?).
Granted, environmental engineering is not a bad occupation, but ML does more than simply draw. I suspect that if you didn’t go to work they’d find someone else to plug into your place pretty quickly. That can’t be done with ML. He reaches thousands of people daily and millions over his career, love him or hate him. In today’s MTV/blog world of 2 minute communication, a political cartoon can be and has been quite an effective way of getting a message across.

However, you ask me about Iraq being an experiment in social engineering and I 100 percent have to agree with. It is a society of dictators and religious rule that breeds terrorist, so how else would you suggest we fight a long term war against it.
But I have this funny thing where I think all humans long to be free and many seek comfort in religion to help explain the many things science will never tell us.
I don’t recall the spreading democracy or liberty phrase, seems to me it was always spreading freedom. Free nations don’t breed terrorist etc…
One of the Majority’s Voices of Dissent, yeah short cartoons can be very influential to certain types of people. Influential like Michael Moore “documentaries” that pervert the truth? It seems like we have two choices and have to support one or the other, quite honestly, I would like a RICO investigation of both parties done and shut down both.
“However, you ask me about Iraq being an experiment in social engineering and I 100 percent have to agree with. It is a society of dictators and religious rule that breeds terrorist, so how else would you suggest we fight a long term war against it. “
I don’t buy it, maybe you have faith enough in government programs to change the mindset of a people and he government there of, but I do not. There are bad people out there who will try to kill us, and destroy everything they can in our country, but that does not mean giving up our rights as Americans to protect against threat. The most protective society for it’s people is a military dictatorship, but if you give up your rights for the sake of protection, being an american just does not have the same value. What choice would you make, liberty with danger, or conformance with safety?

If you’re talking about perverting the truth, you’ve got to start with your man GW. His perversions have had more negative impact on the world than anyone since Mao Tse Tung and the worst impact on this country since, well, ever (although Andrew Johnson may be a close second).
So first you say you’re against social engineering, but then you say except in the case of Iraq? You really think anyone is better off because GW chose to invade under false pretenses? The American soldiers are better off? The American people? The Iraqi people? You can’t be serious. And free countries don’t breed terrorists? What about Timothy McVeigh? What about Eric Rudolph? You think Iraq has fewer terrorists now than when they were oppressed? Surely you couldn’t be saying that.
You seem sincere, but your logic just does not make sense.

On the 29th anniversary of the fall of Saigon General Vo Nguyen Giap, the legendary commander-in-chief of North Vietnam’s military, praised America’s Vietnam anti-war protestors for their contribution to the communist victory, “I would like to thank them,” the general told Reuters.[1] Former North Vietnamese Colonel Bui Tin explained, “Through dissent and protest [America] lost the ability to mobilize a will to win.”[2] With the help of certain journalists who couldn’t tell the difference between victory and defeat on the battlefield, the communists prevailed. While anti-war activists were spitting in the face of our returning troops, the people of South Vietnam were being slaughtered by the thousands.

So I ask RE what he thinks a long term strategy to fight a war on terrorism would be and he follows the typical line of throwing some criticism with no solutions. Loosing my rights? Am I to believe that is intelligence? I personally have not lost any rights that I felt I had before. I have always assumed the government could and would ease drop on me, but information is harmless, unless gov’t uses it to take away my life, liberty, or pursuit of happiness. The courts protect me from those infringements. All of this talk about losing our rights make me think the republicrats are not the only ones playing on our fears. I’m scared of terrorism without anyone telling me I need to be.
The we have One of The Majority’s Voices of Dessent (OTMVD), who says my logic doesn’t make sense. It’s not logic it is an intuition. OTMVD, did you read this part of my post; But I have this funny thing where I think all humans long to be free? OTMVD doesn’t I guess?
