A Reuben is more than a sandwich

The AJC’s shy, retiring editorial cartoonist is too modest to tell you this himself, so I will.

Mike Luckovich has won the National Cartoonist Society’s 60th annual Reuben Award as the top cartoonist of the year.

Mike, who last month won his second Pulitzer Prize, is a somewhat unusual choice for the Reuben which usually goes to comics cartoonists rather than editorial cartoonists.

The award was given last weekend in Chicago.

The other four Reuben finalists this year were comic cartoonists Bill Amend (“FoxTrot”/Universal Press Syndicate), Dave Coverly (“Speed Bump”/Creators), Brian Crane (“Pickles”/Washington Post Writers Group), and Dan Piraro (“Bizarro”/King Features Syndicate), according to Editor & Publisher.

retiring editorial cartoonist

What, he is too young to retire.

Congratulations Mike!

I really like ml’s stuff, but this is kind of an odd award for him. His ‘toons aren’t in the same category as the other finalists (“Foxtrot”, “Bizarro”, etc.) are.

Oh well….

Mike doesn’t just entertain, he challenges people to think and to laugh at human-kind’s foibles. This is indeed well deserved. Congratulations, Mike Luckovich!

Retiring? Say it ain’t so!!! Why?

ML, if you’re reading this: PLEEEEAAAASSSEE DON’T RETIRE! PLEASEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!! We (lovers of the TRUTH) need you! PLEEASE DON’T RETIRE!!!!!! :(

(Did I mention please?)

Another definition of “retiring” is “to withdraw especially for privacy”. Since it followed the word “shy” in the column I’m going to assume that’s what Lea Donosky meant.

Congratulations Mike! Well deserved!

Retiring???

Come on Mike, you can’t retire. I rarely agreee with your stance on the issues but you do a great job provoking discussion.

Congratulations.

I don’t think that he is retiring, as ALG stated it also means reserved.

TG, it is amusing to hear people claim that someone they agree with is the “lover of truth.” I bet nobody you disagree with is a truth teller

You’re the best, Lucko— always thoughtful and always thought-provoking!

Yeah, this “retiring” bit better be another hilarious joke of yours!

P.S. I’m ambivalent about this award. You got a couple of Pulitzers… I think the FoxTrot guy deserves something as well. :)

Thanks, angry, liberal guy That’s exactly what I meant. Not that Mike was retiring from drawing! I was posting about the award because the AJC’s shy, retiring (lol) cartoonist was too modest to tell you himself.

As an old Broadcast Journalist myself, who’s station was once up for a Peabody, I can tell you that such an award says a lot about the abilities of the man himself. Awards such as this are very rare and hard to achieve.

Add to the fact that it was awarded to a Editorial Cartoonist! Now that is amazing.

Mike — This means that not only does Atlanta love you, but so does the rest of the country.

Great Big Congrats - and you deserve it!

Keep those sneaky barbs targeted at the foibles of our society a’comin’ at us.

Tom
