Well, O.K. let’s quote from the letter you pinkos find so amusing:
“Those with insight,” the Iranian tells Mr. Bush, “can already hear the sounds of the shattering and fall of the ideology and thoughts of the liberal democratic systems. We increasingly see that people around the world are flocking toward a main focal point—that is the Almighty God… . My question for you [Mr. Bush] is, ‘Do you not want to join them?’ “
This ought to be good for the future of liberalism, you think? Sharia Law is just so funny!
“September 11 was not a simple operation. Could it be planned and executed without coordination with intelligence and security services—or their extensive infiltration? Of course this is just an educated guess.”“>http://www.opinionjournal.com/editorial/feature.html?id=110008355)
So much for the “Bin Laden” mastermind of 9/11, sounds like Imawhackjob had more to do with it then Al Qaeda did.
Useful idiots.

I wonder if it will ever dawn on rushncrap that Rumsfeld is going to get up and go to work this morning like nothing ever happened last night?

Speaking of repetitive spastic disorder:
Atlanta Urinal, Bush Tax Cuts- But the package remains controversial, with GOP leaders saying it is essential to sustain a strong economic recovery and Democrats and a few Republicans saying the cuts would mainly benefit the wealthy. Aaack, aaaaack
Gee, seeing how the rich are the only ones paying taxes I wonder why it would mainly benefit them?

rushncap, Jon Stewart’s riff on Rumsfeld was priceless. I loved the video of Donald describing a chunk of Flight 77 as “wonderful”. Wonderful?? Sobering, yes. Thought proking? Okay… but “wonderful”?? What an idiot.
I wonder if it will ever dawn on rushnrap that Rumsfeld is going to get up and go to work this morning like nothing ever happened last night?
And that’s Rumsfeld’s problem. He goes to work EVERY morning like nothing ever happened last night.
After all, he’s not in the intelligence business.

This is a Republicans have to do to get the home team to the polls in November:
That would be understandable. The relentlessly partisan House Minority Leader, Nancy Pelosi of San Francisco, as Speaker? Senator Robert C. Byrd (Grand Kleagle, KKK), the ancient king of pork from West Virginia, as head of Senate appropriations? Gasbags like Patrick Leahy and Teddy Kennedy back in charge (When sobriety allows) of judicial nominations?

Last June Conyers commandeered a basement conference room in the Capitol to stage a mock hearing into impeachment charges over the Iraq war. “[Conyers] banged a large wooden gavel and got the other lawmakers to call him ‘Mr. Chairman,’” recounted Washington Post reporter Dana Milbank. “He liked that so much that he started calling himself ‘the chairman’ and spouted other chairmanly phrases, such as ‘unanimous consent’ and ‘without objection so ordered.’”
“As luck would have it,” Milbank wryly noted, “all four of the witnesses agreed that President Bush lied to the nation and was guilty of high crimes…. Conyers was having so much fun that he ignored aides’ entreaties to end the session. ‘At the next hearing,’ [Conyers] told his colleagues, ‘we could use a little subpoena power.’ That brought the house down.”
One of the “witnesses” for this show trial, not so coincidentally, was Ray McGovern, the ex-CIA briefing officer turned left-wing activist who turned up in Atlanta last week at a public speech by Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld. During the question and answer period, McGovern, who has adopted a number of left-wing causes and was a John Kerry supporter, seized the microphone to repeatedly demand that Rumsfeld admit to “lies” about weapons of mass destruction and other issues.

NICE touch with the mounted fish in Mike’s cartoon that’s hanging behind Bush the idiot.
It’s his highest acheivement!
Bush was obviously joking — to a point. But the thing about Bush is that he has stock answers to all the expected questions. So it’s the unpredictable ones where he’s the most revealing.
Remember when he was asked to name his biggest mistake and what he’d learned from it — and he couldn’t name any? (He hasn’t held a prime-time press conference since.)
So what to make of his response to the German question? Maybe it was just a little innocent clowning. But maybe it emerged from his own candid awareness that historians looking back at his presidency may see an obvious low point (or two or three), but no equally obvious high points.
Hater, since this is from the Washington POst, your favorite neo-lib paper, I know you’ll like it!!

Those braniac Republicans in the Senate sometimes get it right. Like the stopped clock that’s right twice a day.
WASHINGTON — Employers would have to check Social Security numbers and the immigration status of all new hires under a tentative Senate agreement on toughening sanctions against people who provide jobs to illegal immigrants.
Employers found to have actually hired illegal immigrants once an electronic system for the checks is in place could be fined up to $20,000 per unauthorized worker and even sentenced to jail for repeat offenses.
Makes a lot more sense than Hater’s pathetic expensive border fence.
But OF COURSE the Republicrap business owners making fortunes off the back of illegals paid slave wages see themselves as VICTIMS!!
Employers are wary of the system Congress wants them to use and say it would be unreliable.

The end result of the Jon Stewart generation:
Where are the bodies?
For years, reporters have been alerting America to one scare after another. Chemicals, cell phones, SARS — everything is going to kill us! You would think by now we’d be doing nothing but digging graves.
Instead, Americans are living longer than ever. Not that you’d ever know that from the mainstream (drive by) media.
So let’s grab a shovel to clear away the nonsense and dig out the truth: Myths, lies and stupidity are often the basis of today’s scary news stories.
A whole age group of easily excited, uneducated sissies.

The Cheney/Bush (note the order) Administration could follow the example of the Reagan/Bush Administrations in handling Iran.
Don’t try to fight the Iranian mullahs - appease them, arm them, sell them missile technology and other advanced weaponry. AND, while you’re at it use the money to fund Central American death squads.

The tiny coffins of the George Bush generation.
United Press International
The United States has one of the highest rates of infant mortality in the industrialized world…
Of the 125 countries listed, Sweden ranked first, or safest, followed by Denmark, Finland, Austria, Germany, Norway, Australia, Netherlands, Canada, United States and Britain.
10th?? The US ranks TENTH?? The US health care system gets a double star. It’s the most expensive in the world, by far… and in the developed world, it sucks the most.
What do Richard Nixon and Hillary Clinton have in common? They both backed nationalized, single pay health care systems. And they both were right.

This is what America is reading.
There are at least two general but nonetheless compelling reasons why Donald Rumsfeld should be required to resign immediately as secretary of defense. One is the stunning lack of competence he’s demonstrated during the past five-and-a-half years. We’ve called for him to step down, on those grounds, three times in less than two years.
But then there’s the even more troubling matter of his utter lack of integrity. Mr. Rumsfeld’s tenure at the Pentagon has been marked by a series of misstatements he made about Iraqi weapons capability before the U.S. invasion in March 2003. Worse, Mr. Rumsfeld denies making those statements.* That makes him a liar.
God Bless America.

Catching up before work. Since Andy’s link on the previous thread puts my favorite “Bob Dylan” amongst many who stood out and made a difference I’ll have to leave everybody with these:

“All this talk about equality. The only thing people really have in common is that they are all going to die.” By: Bob Dylan

Good toon ML. The “trophy” bass makes it great.
Give Tom Cruise a break, though. Selling any sort of American “intelligence” agency as anything other than bumbling idiots after pre-Iraq intel failures is a very tough sell indeed. Guess it depends on if you view the failure as a result of bad intel or if you feel that the administrative “interpretation” of it was flawed.
Ultimate responsibility does not rest with the CIA, regardless of how much the administration wants to shift our focus. Interpretation of gathered intel and action taken thereafter rests solely with the President!

I’m sick of and fed up to the gills of our “intelligence failure” re Sept 11. The only intellgence failure was between Bush’s ears. The signs were there, Bush refused to listen. Iran is doing what any group of humans would, reacting to a threat. Bush blathered and blithered about the axis of evil for his money men. Has anyone noticed how N Korea has disappeared from the rants since Bush got the Star Wars boondoggle through? It doesn’t work any better than previously but Bush accomplished his purpose, he paid his supporters who helped buy the elections. Now he wants to line the oil men’s pockets, principall his own and Cheney’s Halliburton. Wake up Bush is playing a very dangerous game and our future is at stake. Nobody knows what nuclear horror an attack on Irans nukes would unleash on the world.

Since this forum, like most, is just each side talking past the other, I’ll repeat what I’ve said about Iran before.
If our country had an occupying army in Canada or Mexico that had pre-emptively invaded that country, do any of you think we would renounce developing nukes in order to deter that occupying army from invading America? Obviously, not in a million years. I think even Bush knows this to be the case. All our bellicose rhetoric is only facillitating a strange bedfellows alliance of Russia and Iran.
That is not something we want unless we want oil to reach $100 a barrel just as summer driving season begins. If that is what you want, I hope you enjoy spending your vacation in your backyard. Leave the Iranians alone. They may be a little crazy, but they are not insane.

Well, let’s just see what happened to start World War II, The appeasement Frenchies that the pinko left loves so much looked the other way while Hitler built a massive army. Instead of preemptively attacking Germany and removing the threat, the appeasement French said stupid things like “Churchill wants to start WWII and kill us all.” By the time the appeasement French were invaded and under Hitler’s rule, most everyone was already dead. 50-100 million to be exact.

SEC. RUMSFELD: Not at all. If you think — let me take that, both pieces — the area in the south and the west and the north that coalition forces control is substantial. It happens not to be the area where weapons of mass destruction were dispersed. We know where they are. They’re in the area around Tikrit and Baghdad and east, west, south and north somewhat.
Second, the [audio glitch] facilities, there are dozens of them, it’s a large geographic area. It is the — Answar Al-Islam group has killed a lot of Kurds. They are tough. And our forces are currently in there with the Kurdish forces, cleaning the area out, tracking them down, killing them or capturing them and they will then begin the site exploitation. The idea, from your question, that you can attack that place and exploit it and find out what’s there in fifteen minutes.
I would also add, we saw from the air that there were dozens of trucks that went into that facility after the existence of it became public in the press and they moved things out. They dispersed them and took them away. So there may be nothing left. I don’t know that. But it’s way too soon to know. The exploitation is just starting.

I don’t know if you missed it, but the other day I came up with one i liked so much I think I’ll repeat it today. Just for fun, and because I like it when the wing-nuts go ballistic, let’s reprise seeker’s wonderful, sarcastic post from last night:
“The Islamofascists are waging a propaganda and psychological campaign of sublime effectiveness, all the more effective because those infidel Americans just don’t see it! Osama bin Laden is pleased.”
(You’ll have to click the link for the meat of her/his wit. But here’s the fun conclusion!)
“Osama is playing US fears like a violin. He’s loving every minute of it as he plots his next deadly attack, knowing that his enemy still refuses to see the forest for the trees. He may be shuttling from stone hut to cave in Tora Bora, but his satellite phones and Internet links keep his tiny ‘band of brothers’ humming like a well oiled machine. His well timed video and audio manifestos inflame this wasteful panic.”
“He and his comrades watch. And wait.”
“And smile.”

finch, Bush is handling the terrorists. I know you don’t want to recognize that but…
I would have put a bet on rising energy costs with or without Iraq. Global supply & demand my friend.
An all powerful socialist, followed by communist government under the Democrats? Hell yea! That one scares me. It’s already proven to be a failure for the people in France and everywhere else it’s taken hold.
And by the way, the voting public views the Democrats as incompetent. Their own constituency views them as incompetent, ineffective and clueless.
I’ll take your post to mean that socialism is O.K. with you.

Let’s put tax cuts in terms everyone can understand. Suppose that every day, ten men go out for dinner and the bill for all ten comes to $100. If they paid their bill the way we pay our taxes, it would go something like this:
The first four men (the poorest) would pay nothing.
The fifth would pay $1. The sixth would pay $3. The seventh would pay $7. The eighth would pay $12. The ninth would pay $18. The tenth man (the richest) would pay $59.So, that’s what they decided to do. The ten men ate dinner in the restaurant every day and seemed quite happy with the arrangement, until one day, the owner threw them a curve. “Since you are all such good customers,” he said, “I’m going to reduce the cost of your daily meal by $20.” Dinner for the ten now cost just $80.
The group still wanted to pay their bill the way we pay our taxes so the first four men were unaffected. They would still eat for free. But what about the other six men - the paying customers? How could they divide the $20 windfall so that everyone would get his ‘fair share?’ They realized that $20 divided by six is $3.33. But if they subtracted that from everybody’s share, then the fifth man and the sixth man would each end up being paid to eat their meal. So the restaurant owner suggested that it would be fair to reduce each man’s bill by roughly the same amount, and he proceeded to work out the amounts each should pay.
The fifth man, like the first four, now paid nothing (100% savings). The sixth now paid $2 instead of $3 (33% savings).
The seventh now paid $5 instead of $7 (28% savings).
The eighth now paid $9 instead of $12 (25% savings).
The ninth now paid $14 instead of $18 (22% savings).
The tenth now paid $49 instead of $59 (16% savings).
Each of the six was better off than before. And the first four continued to eat for free. But once outside the restaurant, the men began to compare their savings.
“I only got a dollar out of the $20,” declared the sixth man. He pointed to the tenth man, “but he got $10!” “Yeah, that’s right,” exclaimed the fifth man. “I only saved a dollar, too. It’s unfair that he got ten times more than me!”
“That’s true!!” shouted the seventh man. “Why should he get $10 back when I got only two? The wealthy get all the breaks!”
“Wait a minute,” yelled the first four men in unison. “We didn’t get anything at all. The system exploits the poor!”
The nine men surrounded the tenth and beat him up.
The next night the tenth man didn’t show up for dinner, so the nine sat down and ate without him. But when it came time to pay the bill, they discovered something important. They didn’t have enough money between all of them for even half of the bill!
And that, boys and girls, is how our tax system works. The people who pay the highest taxes get the most benefit from a tax reduction. Tax them too much, attack them for being wealthy, and they just may not show up anymore.

I must admit, these are happy days for me. The GOP’s popularity is going down like a crack-whore on a dealer. The Party of Lincoln is choking on its own hubris. The ideas they have are all stagnant and their speeches vapid. What are their ideas lately….. throw money at the problem. Whether its Iraq or high gas prices, spend, spend, spend our way out of it. At the same time these simpletons keep trying to cut taxes (essentially turning the Nanny State on its head, making the poor subsidize the rich), always thinking that will somehow save them and their party. As median incomes fall and the American citizen is further and further into debt, the concept of “Trickle-Down” economics has been thoroughly debunked, yet they hold on to it as if it’s a fundamental economic fact. I think that’s the GOP’s biggest problem these days, they can not separate fact from fiction. Even worse, they embrace fiction as fact and have been trying to peddle it to our citizens for 5+ years. The People are sick of it and they’ll hear their voices in November….

Thanks, finch. Maybe ‘true believers’ just don’t know how to do sarcasm, but I think there is some honest truth behind Seeker’s hysteria. I know the righties will call me an al Qaida sympathisizer, but the diabolical brilliance of the 9/11 attacks is that bin Laden doesn’t have to do anything else-ever. He’s turned our country inside/out, and he waited until we had exactly the kind of leadership in place that would react exactly the way he wanted them to react.
I’d be willing to bet the farm-if I had one-that we will never see another terrorist attack on the scale of 9/11 by bin Laden and/or al Qaida as constituted then or now.
Sure, a copy cat is always possible, but I doubt any wannabe outfit has the necessary funding. There was a documentary I saw not long ago that provided an analogy to what I feel will be the sad legacy of all this hysteria. It was about the leftist terror organizations in Europe like Bader-Meinhoff and the Red Brigades. All the death and destruction they perpetrated and all the fear and violence they provoked in response were for absolutely nothing in the end.
Years from now, the same will be said of 9/11…….and the “war on terror”.

Goldie: George Tenet’s ‘Slam-Dunk’ Into the History Books
Before the libs get a chance to rewrite history:
With President Clinton’s appointment yesterday of George Tenet as his next DCI-designate, however, there appears some danger that the system will not work the next time around. This nomination reflects, above all, an understandable desire on the part of the President and the Intelligence Committee — on both sides of the aisle — quickly to fill the vacancy at the Central Intelligence Agency and to put the rancor engendered by the last nominee behind them.
Bugs Bunny Stewart will never, never interview George Tenet, believe me.

Meanwhile, Queen Pinko apologizes for another failed corrupt school administrator just like Linda Schrenko, liberal hypocrisy abounds, as usual:
The federal investigation into financial mismanagement at Morris Brown College has ended with a guilty plea from former president Dolores Cross. At 69, the educator faces the prospect of prison time.
Sadly, she deserves it. While she pleaded guilty to just one count of embezzlement, her crimes were of consequence. Not only did she virtually destroy a historically black college already hovering on the brink of bankruptcy — the college has lost its accreditation and is down to 44 students — but she may have also damaged the credit ratings of countless young adults.

Speaking of WWIII.
Last week, Bernard Lewis, America’s dean of Islamic studies who just turned 90 and remembers the 20th century well, confessed that for the first time he feels it is 1938 again. He did not need to add that in 1938, in the face of the gathering storm — a fanatical, aggressive, openly declared enemy of the West, and most determinedly of the Jews — the world did nothing.
When Iran’s mullahs acquire their coveted nukes in the next few years, the number of Jews in Israel will just be reaching 6 million. Never again?

Their aim is to weaken America and it’s institutions. They are constantly nipping away, using Political Correctness, multi-culturalism, college professors, hinderences to progress like wacko environmentalistm - all sorts of tools which destroy the fabric of our country, and the nature of debate. They can’t launch a full-fledged violent revolution, so they accomplish the same goals, although it takes patience.
When they attack people like Rumsfeld through a useful idiot in the guise of an ex CIA agent, they are trying to weaken America through propaganda. Who in the MSM reported that McGovern is a leftwing kook?, not just a former spook? Just about zero.

Dear Goldie: Once upon a time, the World Trade Center was attacked out of the blue by some crazy Islamic terrorists hellbent on returning the Earth to allah. Bush and the neocons, up to this point in time, may have been laying awake at night dreaming about invading the rest of the world, but they had not yet done anything about it.
Since then we have wasted the Taliban, a delightful little group of jihadists who would have loved having you pinkos around had we not killed all of them, and, based on evidence presented to us by France, Britain, The CIA, Colin Powell, Bill Clinton, John Kerry and the United States Congress we invaded and disarmed a madman dictator who was feeding his populace into shredding machines feet first. Say what you will about WMD, but the next guy in line at the shredding machine when we invaded is eternally grateful to us.
He’s not France but hey.
Anything else I can help you with?

finch, RE, Daniel, the bunch of you,
I did make a big error in my post. I should have just said “The Left”. An army of little nipping ducks, with nothing to offer but criticism and hindsight.
All told you make up the vast majority of the Democratic Party which not the measly 5% that Finch cites. And when they make up virtually 100% of the professors at college campuses, feeding their anti-american bilge to our wide-eyed youth, they can insidiously accomplish more than votes, or revolutions can hope to manage.
You are all still alive and kicking doing all the things I described. Marching away in your stupid peace marches, keeping some useless species of fruit fly alive so things refineries can’t be built, insisting that we let all sorts of people who hate this country immigrate here because of “diversity”, defining us into whining groups with endless demands and grievances -by our sex, ethnicity,or religion, instead of just being Americans like it used to be. Telling us that we’re fascists and NAZIs because we don’t want cede to your every demand for some new right, usually to behave badly.
Weaken us enough, blast away at Bush and Cheney and Rumsfeld, spread the news through the MSM all over the world that “America sucks!” and pretty soon people like the Iranian nutcase have the confidence and courage to take us on. Bin Laden got that message decades ago. And the beautiful part about it? You get to blame it on Bush!

Today I am signing into law H.R. 4655, the “Iraq Liberation Act of 1998.” This Act makes clear that it is the sense of the Congress that the United States should support those elements of the Iraqi opposition that advocate a very different future for Iraq than the bitter reality of internal repression and external aggression that the current regime in Baghdad now offers.

Irresponsible fiscally, nepotism, cronyism, and bribary. That is the legacy of the GOP conquest. Our country will not put the Dems back in power because they have better leadership or ideas, but because they have learned not to trust any politician. They want balance and oversight more than any one ideology. The GOP has shown itself to not punish it’s own, and GWB is the exapmle of the concept that loyalty trumps all other values, including competance and honesty. The GOP has no ideas and can now only try to create frightening images to woo back voters, but it will not be enough

Sure they had a reason. Ego. Oh, money and privilege had a place in the choir, but it’s ego. Simple as that. Like Louis XVI, Napoleon, Stalin, Mao, Shah Reza Pahlavi, and so on, they want to be king of the dung heap. Big fish in a little pond. Ego.
The Iraq war wasn’t about vanquishing Islamofascist terrorism. If the Bush administration really cared, Army Rangers would be blitzing Tora Bora, roasting Bin Laden on a spit. The US would be weaning itself from the Saudi oil addiction (bioenergy) and telling the Wahhabis to shove it. The Iraq war is all about macho vengeance and my gun’s bigger than yours.

Is the U.S. Giving Mexico Intelligence about Americans?
There is no more explosive issue on the political landscape than illegal immigration. Not only has it sharply divided the American people, who want it stopped and reversed, from the political classes, which want to legitimize and, perforce, encourage more of it. It may be singularly responsible for President Bush’s alarmingly low approval ratings. Those, after all, are not being driven by the Left and the media. They’ve never been fans. The numbers are tanking thanks to flight by the Republican base and Reagan Democrats, who are apoplectic over the administration’s stubborn insouciance in the face of unabashed lawlessness that acutely threatens public safety.

Russell, a prominent leader of the South Carolina Republican Party and the local Christian Coalition, knew that Smith was not the sweet innocent first presented to the media because he had stolen her innocence. When she was only 6, her natural father killed himself over a messy divorce and Russell’s marriage to Smith’s mother. At the age of 13, Smith attempted suicide, and while aware of her fragile mental state, Russell began his sexual advances two years later. At 17,Smith attempted suicide again. Russell claims that he held off until Smith was married before escalating this sick sexual liaison.

Maureen Dowd had a funny observation in her column today in the NYTimes. George H.W. Bush raised taxes, cut the deficit and stayed out of Bagdhad. George W. Bush cut taxes, ballooned the deficit and has us bogged down in Bagdhad. Though fourteen years divides father and son, in ‘92 and ‘06, the approval rating of both is exactly the same. It’s that d-amn Sam Walton. Who does he think he is, trying to squash the little man. They love the guy in Pass Christian, Mississippi.
Alexis de Tocqueville, the noted French statesman and political philosopher, became famous for his book, “Democracy in America.” He wrote it after a visit to the United States in 1831. It ranks as a classic observation of American democracy by a person from another country.
One of his key beliefs, shaped by his visit, held that, “Democracy extends the sphere of liberty and individual freedom, socialism restricts it. Democracy attaches all possible value to each person; socialism makes a man a mere agent, a mere number. Democracy and socialism have nothing in common but one word: Equality. But notice the difference: While democracy seeks equality in liberty; socialism seeks equality in restraint and servitude.”
The Democrats are working hard to make sure Americans become a mere agent, a mere number.

Well, Bush is off the hook, go figure:
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Lobbyist Jack Abramoff made two visits to the White House before being convicted earlier this year in an expanding federal investigation of political corruption, documents released on Wednesday showed.
Visitor logs kept by the Secret Service showed that Abramoff visited the White House for about 26 minutes on March 6, 2001, and for about 47 minutes on January 20, 2004.

Coming right on the heels of a three-year witch-hunt directed at Rush Limbaugh for an addiction to prescription drugs because of his politics — as well as the continuing threat to put Tom DeLay in prison because of his politics — you would think there would be at least some serious discussion of prosecuting the young Kennedy for his addiction to prescription drugs, too.
The only violence on college campuses these days occurs when people like David Horowitz, Michelle Malkin and me show up to give a speech in defense of America. Then we need bomb-sniffing dogs and a lecture hall lined with armed police. But a Talibanist goes about his day at Yale unmolested.

Facts, who needs facts?
Many experts argue the Chinese currency is 10 percent to 20 percent undervalued, which means the U.S. consumer is able to purchase Chinese-made goods at a lower price than if the currency traded at its true market value to the U.S. dollar. If an American can buy a Chinese-made product at Wal-Mart for an artificially low price, it means the American consumer has an increase in real income (he or she can buy more with the same income).
In 2005, the U.S. bought (imported) $243 billion worth of goods from China. If these goods were only 10 percent underpriced because of the artificially low Chinese currency, U.S. consumers received a subsidy of about $24 billion.
Other countries’ consumers also received the Chinese subsidy to the extent they bought Chinese goods, but the U.S., as China’s biggest customer, received the greatest subsidy. The Chinese underprice their currency because they are trying to increase exports to obtain U.S. dollars and other foreign currencies. In turn, China’s government uses many of the dollars to buy U.S. government bonds to serve as the reserve for its banking system. If the Chinese had a more efficient banking and capital market structure, they would not need so many dollars.
For now, foreign ownership of U.S. government debt equals about 45 percent of that held by the public (not including U.S. government agencies). Of the little more than $2 trillion held by non-Americans, the Japanese hold about a third and the Chinese about 12 percent. If non-Americans did not buy much U.S. government debt, Americans would need to both save more and consume less to make up the deficit.

Buy Danish,
The AIM link says the following about Dana Priest’s story:
“After months of investigation by European investigators, no evidence has yet surfaced to support her claims about “secret prisons.”“
That’s odd, since the White House, asked about Priest’s charges, has never denied them. It simply spoons out the same old “we’re not mistreating prisoners” shuck and jive:
“WASHINGTON (CNN) — Suspected terrorists in U.S. custody are being treated humanely, Bush administration officials said Wednesday after a report that American agents are holding prisoners in a worldwide network of secret facilities.”
That, Danish, is an acknowledgement of truth.
And it’s not as if the Post said exactly WHERE the prisons are, is it?? So what’s the problem?
Or are you embarrassed that the United States, that bastion of freedom, the universally respected bulwark of truth, justice and due process around the world is engagaging in the sordid business of refusing to tell suspects what they are charged with, refusing to grant them legal representation, refusing to allow them to confront their accusers, refusing them a piublic trial (even Saddam is getting that!), refusing to even tell their governments or even their families that they’re not missing or dead…
In effect, treating them like they’re in some Soviet gulag. You know, the ones like Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn wrote about? The ones that the US was assured would never, ever happen in a free, democratic country?
Sure, lock ‘em up if they’re suspected of terrorism. Charge them. Try them. Execute them, if that’s the sentence handed down in an open court. But DO NOT lock them away and toss the keys without at least acknowledging that they are alive.
That’s so… un-American.
