But in this country, anyone can insult the president of the United States. Colbert just did it, and he will not suffer any consequence at all. He knew that going in. He also knew that Bush would have to sit there and pretend to laugh at Colbert’s lame and insulting jokes. Bush himself plays off his reputation as a dunce and his penchant for mangling English. Self-mockery can be funny. Mockery that is insulting is not. The sort of stuff that would get you punched in a bar can be said on a dais with impunity. This is why Colbert was more than rude. He was a bully.- Richard Cohen, Washington Post

Bush Sends a Message to Tehran
By NICHOLAS WAPSHOTT - Staff Reporter of the Sun May 5, 2006
America will never desert the state of Israel, President Bush said last night, sending an unambiguous signal to the ruling mullahs in Iran - who are developing a nuclear weapon capability in the teeth of international pressure - that their threats to destroy Israel will be fiercely resisted.

If ‘cartoon boy’ were an objective and unbiased reporter, he’d have had something on Rep. Patrick Kennedy keeping up his family’s appearances (driving while under the influence). But something like that wouldn’t happen unless it was one of the Bush daughters.
Thank God a Kennedy didn’t take the life of another innocent ‘lady friend’ (snicker).

Another day, another Andy-link to Cohen’s petulant column dissing Colbert. Stephen thanks both of you for the publicity.
“Mr. Cohen has things the wrong way round. A “bully” is someone who picks on the weakest kid in the schoolyard. Someone who stands up to the meanest kid in the schoolyard, as Colbert did, is the very opposite of a bully. Cohen is resentful because he has already given Bush his milk money and bought his protection.”

Really?:
The Iran hostage crisis was a 444-day (about 14 months) period during which student proxies of the new Iranian regime held hostage 52 diplomats and citizens of the United States, which lasted from November 4, 1979 until January 20, 1981. It is believed by many to have caused President Jimmy Carter of the United States to lose his re-election attempt, and punctuated the first Islamic revolution of modern times.

So Many Republican Hypocrites, So Little Time
Elisabeth Bumiller, the New York Times Public Relations specialist for the White House, wrote the evening up as a laugh riot centering around Geroge W. Bush’s “Doublemint Twins” stunt. It must have been a long evening for Elisabeth, because she forgot to even mention Stephen Colbert’s appearance. It was perfect hypocrisy in the New York Times, with a big photo of Bush and his impersonator. Form meeting content. White House reporters prove themselves the shills Colbert accused them of being.

Reports are surfacing people taking Ambien are experiencing sleepwalking, memory loss / amnesia, binge eating while sleeping, having sex while sleeping, and other disturbing side effects. Some of the most serious side effects involve Ambien users having auto accidents the day after taking Ambien due to daytime sleepiness and the lingering feeling of being drugged
I’m tempted to put my compassionate conservatism to work and fill the form out for Patrick. I’m just not sure how to answer the part about having sex while sleeping. Maybe I’ll put a call into his office.

Sorry Danish, thought you were serious. Sore topic for me and I was up all night with a fragile patient.
Not that I am defending Kennedy, but the link does state that he was only prescribed Phenergan (promethazine) on Tuesday. It is unlikely that Kennedy received proper cautions on the interaction of these two compounds.
The difficulty may have been that the two compounds potentiate each others actions. Phenergan is often prescribed to combat the nausea associated with narcotic therapy (or gastroenteritis) but is also used to potentiate the effect of narcotics thereby allowing a reduction in narcotic dosage (see the pharmaceutical preparation “Mepergan”).
In the medical “profession” this sort of phenomenon is know as “sundowners syndrome” and is associated with confusion and apparent intoxication usually occuring at the hour of sleep.
That said, I believe that both Limbaugh and Kennedy are probably guilty of drug abuse. When we allow Limbaugh to skirt responsibility by blaming his abuse on something other than his own lack of responsibility, we open the door to everyone under the sun to avoid reponsibility for their own actions, too. (This is the “Doctor made me do it defense” or as I called it the “Limbaugh Defense”)
It is ultimately each individuals responsibility to be informed regarding the medications that they take. Doctors cannot read your mind and discern that you have been given another medication by a different physician that may be interactive with what you are being prescribed. They should ask and usually do but patients do not often tell us.
Don’t worry RW. Few Doctors care to open themselves to the liability of turning their patients into “chemical zombies” anymore. No jury in America is going to find them guilty of trying to keep their patients off drugs, while every control script that they write opens them to potential litigation or close examination by authorities. End result, the scripts don’t get written and you are left to suffer. That should ease your fears.
Andy: You might want to look at the precautionaries regarding Oxycontin. Limbaugh should certainly have been aware of the addictive liability of this compound had he read same. Someone of his expressed concern regarding drug abuse should have refused the prescriptions he was given and should certainly not have shopped for multiple scripts.
BTW- Narcotic scripts are all very carefully monitored by computer networks, now, so if anybody thinks that they can get away with this nonsense anymore, they should take a long look at what happened to Limbaugh. OK, so he got a slap on the wrist but he had political connections and wealth. Can you count on the same?

Mr. Professional: I believe in Limbaugh’s case that his doctor, obviously a member of your profession, did him a terrible disservice by allowing him to become addicted. Most doctors are arrogant blowhards, more proud of their pinko school PHD’s then they are of their success rate. Who cares if your patient croaks as long as you have his insurance carriers phone number, right?
Even getalife’s doctor showed enough professionalism to realize he was dealing with a hypocrite liberal, a bald faced liar at that, and correctly weaned him off the meds.

Just a note. The MSM failed to tell us that the latest Kennedy intoxication incident is the second in three weeks. Little Patrick was involved in a significant accident in Providence a couple of weeks ago. The local press buried the story in the SPORTS section and the national media didn’t pick it up. His hand-written accident report is described as illegible. Must have been shock setting in. Why no outrage from the media about Patrick not telling us what happened - or does that only apply to Republican VPs and not Democratics. How may times does this have to happen before our intrepid Mikey shakes off the shackles of his masters in the DNC and gives us a good cartoon. Maybe he likes the shackles….

WASHINGTON -U.S. Rep. Patrick Kennedy insisted yesterday that he had consumed “no alcohol” before he slammed his Mustang convertible into a concrete barrier near his office, but a hostess at a popular Capitol Hill watering hole told the Herald she saw him drinking in the hours before the crash.
“He was drinking a little bit,” said the woman, who works at the Hawk & Dove and would not give her name.

Andy: If you will remember, I said that “Limbaugh’s Dr. Feelgoods and his own predisposition for addiction” were responsible for his problems on the last thread.
I am, also, aware that Doctors are sometimes influenced by having a “celebrity” patient and want to keep that patient “happy” as a calling card to other potential patients. Limbaughs’ celebrity probably also worked against him in that respect but that does not absolve him of responsibilty for his actions or lack thereof.
You are obviously unaware of the fact that Physicians are NEVER finished with “schooling”. Unlike many other professions, ours is a very dynamic one which changes all the time.
“Who cares if (my) patient croaks (or has adverse outcoming)?” I DO! So do most of my colleagues. There are always a few bad apples in every barrel, though.

Petulant Professional,
I accept you apology, but…
You are accepting an initial newstory “from the Kennedy camp” as the final word, even though that story makes no mention of reports that he was also drinking at The Hawk and the Dove. Alcohol+Ambien+Phenergan must be quite a potent mixture.
I don’t believe you know much about what Limbaugh did or did not accept responsiblility for, unless you are a closet dittohead. He admitted he was addicted, and has taken all appropriate steps to end his dependency to Oxycontin. He has never claimed to be a victim of anything other than the Palm Beach D.A.’s fishing expedition into his private medical records.
Finch petulantly protests that it wasn’t a sufficiently sincere admission (unlike Bill Clinton I suppose). What more can I say?

No political party has a lock or patent on addictions, vices, etc. The difference in others and Limbaugh is that others are not sitting in an ivory tower pontificating on the sins of others while committing those same sins themselves. How many times did Rush preach to his feeble minded choir while washing down pills that he had acquired by hook or crook. How many times did he call his housekeeper during commercial breaks to get her to run down to the corner to get him some more. Guys like Limbaugh and Kenny Boy Lay, who can hold a bible in his hand, look a camera square in the lens, and declare, “I’ve done nothing wrong,” are true examples of everything that has gone wrong in this country. They opitomize what can truly be considered the scum of the earth.

I think the majority of Americans are the real patriots and you and your ilk are not the majority.
My solution is this. The so called contract with America has been a joke and should be held accountable for the failure of the party in power.
Since we have the majority, we will have a contract with the world. We will hold this administration accountable for its failures along with the 32%.

Bush brother’s divorce produces startling disclosures
The Associated Press
HOUSTON — In the annals of embarrassing presidential relatives, Neil Bush is no Billy Carter or Roger Clinton.
But his messy divorce has produced some eye-opening disclosures. Among them: He had sex with women who showed up uninvited at his hotel rooms in Asia; he had an affair and may have fathered a child out of wedlock; and he stands to make millions from businesses in which he has little expertise — including a computer-chip company managed in part by the son of former Chinese president Jiang Zemin.
It seems certain opportunities tend to present themselves when your name is Neil Bush.
For his part, Bush defended the fees he has received for consulting jobs. But he gave little insight into whether the women who offered him sex in Hong Kong and Taiwan were perhaps paid by mysterious benefactors.
In a deposition taken last March and reviewed by The Associated Press, Bush told the attorney for his wife of 23 years, Sharon, that the women did not ask him for money and he did not pay them anything.
Asked how he knew what to do when he opened his door and saw a woman standing there, the 48-year-old Bush replied: “Whatever happened, happened.”
“It’s a pretty remarkable thing for a man just to go to a hotel room door and open it and have a woman standing there and have sex with her,” said the attorney, Marshall Davis Brown.
“It was very unusual,” Bush replied.
Sharon Bush also accused Neil of fathering a child with the woman he now plans to marry. The woman’s ex-husband has filed a defamation lawsuit, and DNA testing has been requested.
The titillating details have made barely a splash in Texas, where loyalty to the president runs deep. University of Texas government professor Bruce Buchanan said he doubts Neil Bush’s shenanigans will become political fodder in the 2004 election.
“There are lots of examples of presidents with troubled siblings and it never seemed to have that much of an impact,” he said.
Jimmy Carter’s beer-swilling brother, Billy, wrote a book called “Redneck Power” and accepted money from the government of Libya. Bill Clinton’s half-brother, Roger, was jailed for a year for dealing cocaine. Richard Nixon’s kid brother Donald took $205,000 from Howard Hughes in the hopes of opening a fast-food chain selling Nixonburgers.
It is not the first time Neil Bush has caused his family some trouble. At the end of his father’s presidency, Neil was among a group of defendants who agreed to pay $49.5 million to settle a negligence lawsuit over the $1 billion collapse of the savings and loan he directed in Colorado.
Bush denied wrongdoing and was not charged in the grand jury investigation, but the U.S. Office of Thrift Supervision found Bush’s conduct “involved significant conflicts of interest and constituted multiple breaches” of his fiduciary duties.
Bush has gone on to reap profits from other ventures. In the deposition, he said he hoped to receive an estimated $2 million for acting as a consultant to Grace Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp., co-founded by Jiang Zemin’s eldest son.
“Now, you have absolutely no educational background in semiconductors, do you Mr. Bush?” Brown asked.
“That’s correct,” said Bush, who holds an MBA from Tulane University.
Bush recently told the AP he has “not received one penny of compensation” from Grace Semiconductor because he never did the consulting. He did not respond to a request for comment on his divorce proceedings.
Bush has focused most of his energy on Ignite Inc., an Austin-based educational software startup. So far, he has raised $23 million from investors, including Winston Wong, the other founder of Grace Semiconductor.
“Let’s face the reality,” Bush told the AP in 2002. “I probably have access to people who probably wouldn’t meet with a development-stage company, but I feel I’m held to a higher standard.”
Bush’s tax returns, obtained by the AP, showed $357,000 in income from Ignite and at least $798,218 from three transactions involving the stock of Kopin Corp., a small U.S. high-tech company where he had previously been a consultant.
There is no evidence he has tried to enlist help from the president for any of his ventures. Bush spokesman Taylor Gross said the White House had no comment.
Still, said Rice University political science professor Bob Stein, “there is a family pattern here where the Bush sons — Jeb, Neil and George — have benefited tremendously by their connections through their father.”
Currying favor with a relative of the president can “start to smell bad,” said Steven Weiss, communications director for the Center for Responsive Politics, a nonpartisan group that tracks money in politics.
Rex John, who has known Neil Bush since his Denver days, said he has never known Neil Bush to use his family connections to obtain business opportunities.
“I’m sure it has opened many doors for him, but it wasn’t Neil out there trying to get them open,” John said. “Neil would never do anything like that. That’s not his style.”
After Neil Bush severed his 23-year marriage to Sharon in May, he proposed last month in France to Maria Andrews, a former volunteer for former first lady Barbara Bush.
Sharon Bush’s lawyer in the defamation case, David Berg, allowed the AP to review the deposition but said he did not have a copy of Sharon Bush’s testimony. He would not make her available for an interview.
Sharon Bush, 51, alleged her ex-husband could have fathered Andrews’ 3-year-old son. That prompted Andrews’ former husband to file a defamation lawsuit against Sharon Bush. Neil Bush submitted a tissue sample for analysis.
In the meantime, he has been ordered to pay $1,500 a month in child support for two of his children, Pierce, 17 and Ashley, 14. The couple’s oldest child, Lauren, is 19.

Funny - the same people who proclaimed the Cheney shooting incident as “nothing to see here” and “liberals making much ado about nothing” are sure fixated on this Kennedy incident.
These same noble souls also think Rush did absolutely nothing wrong and he is the epitome of good old fashioned Republican family values.

Ummmm:
By Roger May 5, 2006 12:39 PM I’m still picturing Sal’s sight of Hog Man Danish at Talladega. This is the same 4th grade dropout who gives lessons on grammar and punctuation. The same uneducated hayshaker who picks out a simi-longish word from his old greasy paperback dictionary and places it out of context somewhere. The same woodchuck who never understands words or phrases of refinement, yet argues blindly in his typical numb-nutted way. About 12 people tried to explain a few things to him, but Hog Man never got a clue. Speaks of “classics” but never saw even the comicbook version. Can’t you just see those fat, pudgy, filthy fingers banging away on a computer as he blindly blunders into trying to find some association for his ignorant, crude comments? White trash to the end.

APRIL = JUST NOT A GOOD MONTH FOR THE BUSH CREW/JUNTA…..JE JE JE JE
GLENN ;-)
“April is the cruelest month,” said T.S. Eliot in his poem “The Waste Land.” President Bush might agree. Eliot’s poetry often centered on spiritual dryness and drabness, and now more and more Americans finally are catching on to what we in the anti-Bush camp have been saying all along - that the “W” in George W. Bush stands for war, wickedness, wantonness and a wasteland environmental rape and ruin: political dryness and drabness.
With the Bush crew, it is a full-time job for journalists to keep up with every scam and scandal emanating from the Oval Office, but this month of April really has revealed the dismal depths of the sordid sinkhole of scandal that is the trademark of this president and his allies. Before his friends on the Supreme Court cleared the way for Bush to assume the mantle of the presidency after the dubious “election” of 2000, Bush vowed he “would restore honor and dignity to the White House.” That was not the least of his lies, and historians will note that it was in April 2006 that the wheels fell off the vaunted Bush juggernaut.
The month began with the saga of the CIA leaks case, when high-level Bush Leaguer “Scooter” Libby testified against his bosses - Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney - about leaks of secret information about Iraq to the media. The bad news for the Bush boys continued with the political demise of longtime administration ally and Texas congressman Tom DeLay, and the arrest of Homeland Security Department spokesman Brian Doyle on what the Associated Press called an online police sting “related to sexually graphic conversations with what he thought was a teenage girl, who was in fact an undercover Florida detective.”
Things got even worse for the Bush backers in April, as a chorus of retired generals from the U.S. Army and the U.S. Marine Corps called for the ousting of Donald Rumsfeld, Bush’s embattled secretary of defense. Five generals blasted Rumsfeld in April. Marine Gen. Anthony Zinni said April 2 that in Iraq, America is “paying the price for the lack of credible planning.” In an April 12 Washington Post article, Army Gen. John Batiste called for Rumsfeld to “step aside” for a defense secretary “who can be more realistic.” The next day, Army Lt. Gen. John Riggs said Rummy should resign because the Bush team “only need(s) the military advice when it satisfies their agenda.” On April 14, Army Maj. Gen. Charles Swannack hammered Rummy for “his absolute failures in managing the war.”
Perhaps the best statement against Rumsfeld came from Marine Lt. Gen. Gregory Newbold, who said on April 9, “The commitment of our forces to this fight was done with a casualness and swagger that are the special province of those who have never had to execute those missions - or bury the results.” The general’s pointed remarks came as a much-deserved slap in the face to a warmongering Bush team that is chock full of chickenhawks.
On April 23, the Los Angeles Times went the generals one better, calling for the retirement of not just Rumsfeld, but of Cheney also. The paper called for “throwing Cheney overboard” as a “repudiation of the excessively hawkish foreign policy” of the Bush administration.
As the White House junta girds for war against Iran, possibly involving the use of nuclear weapons, it’s good to see at least some in the military, the media and the American populace telling the Bush crew in April that “we won’t get fooled again.”
Bush’s bad month of April continued with the recent retirement of media mouthpiece Scott McClellan and the reshuffling of the duties of the Machiavellian Karl Rove, the White House adviser who has been called “Bush’s brain.” It got even worse for the Bushitistas April 20, when a lone but loud protester from China’s persecuted Falun Gong religious sect interrupted the pomp and ceremony of a White House visit by China’s President Hu Jintao. For her brave act of free speech, Wenji Wang faces a six-month jail term here in the land of the allegedly free.
Bush apologized to Hu rather than defending dissent and human rights. That’s not surprising, since the president’s father, and brothers Neil and Marvin, have extensive political and business interests in China. Bush’s uncle, Prescott Bush Jr., the older brother of former President Bush, is the retired head of the U.S.-China Chamber of Commerce and a partner in a multimillion-dollar golf resort built near Shanghai.
Perhaps all the Bush family and friends were best described by T.S. Eliot when he wrote, “We are the hollow men, we are the stuffed men, leaning together.”
By just wondering

Andy,
Thanks for posting that. I missed it - I guess I should be pleased that Roger has promoted me from second to fourth grade.
He seems to suffer from word-envy. I don’t blame him, since his own abilities fall short. Apparently he has to use a dictionary to keep up to speed, and that’s somehow my fault.
He screwed up a decent attempt at alliteration when he described my…fat, pudgy, filthy fingers. He should not have used the word pudgy which ruined the flow, and is redundant as he already used the word fat. He fared somewhat better with blindly blundered, although I would have said blundered blindly (putting the verb before the adverb) and he may have offended some sight-impaired folks by that reference to blindness. At least he didn’t call me a spaz.
And he too has the sex wrong despite more than 12 people noting it on various occasions.

Thank goodness the peace is being restored in Baghdad. It’s just like Andy says… safer than downtown Atlanta!
“The month after the bombing of the Golden Mosque in Samarra was the bloodiest in Baghdad’s modern history, with 1,294 bodies arriving at the city’s morgue. Ninety per cent had been shot…”
“What has been particularly disturbing about the bodies being found across the city is not only the number but also how many show signs of having been horrifically tortured before they died.”
Man, that makes downtown, Little Five Points or Buckhead look like war zones or something!
No sign of ethnic tensions here. Not a hint of civil war, either. Move along, nothing to see….

Dusty, unless you were THERE, then you don’t really know what Kerry went through in Vietnam, now do you? People who were there spoke up for him; people who were sort of nearby claimed to know more than the people who were there, and denegraded his service (how conveniently) during an election year against a man whose “service” is indeed questionable at best.
Speaking the truth to Congress in such troubled times must have taken great courage. Letting a bunch of corporate hacks spend millions on advertising smearing him in ‘04, and not responding with the appropriate outrage was, in my opinion, something less.

Shepherd Smith, that right wing wingnut is asking a sensible question:
Why is P.K. going into rehab for painkillers when it was supposed to be about Ambien and the stomach drug?
Come to think of it, it was also a bit odd that P.K. mentioned “the stomach flu”, but I’m not an expert like W.S., AntiRad, and Finch, so I’ll leave that question for them to answer.

finch: I said it was more safe for Americans in Iraq than it is in America. Big difference.
Why must you go to England to get bad news about Iraq? Let’s just look at what See BS, avowed Bush haters, has to say about it:
Authorities also said 31 “foreign fighters” had been killed since April and 161 al Qaeda in Iraq leaders were killed or captured since January, seriously undercutting the group’s logistical abilities.
Lynch said that U.S. operations against al-Zarqawi had dramatically cut the number of suicide attacks in the country from an average of 75 per month to fewer than 25 per month now.

This may have been previously shared on the blog but it never hurts to make positively sure everyone gets it:
Patrick Kennedy’s past includes several troubling episodes, starting with his treatment in 1986 for cocaine use. More recently, a charter company accused him of causing $28,000 in damage to a rented yacht in 2000. That same year, he acknowledged that he was “on a lot of different medications for, among other things, depression,” and was accused of shoving an airport security guard at Los Angeles International Airport when she tried to make him check his bag.
He was in a traffic incident last month in his home district, according to Boston Herald columnist Howie Carr, who reported that the mishap occurred as Kennedy was hurrying into the parking lot of a pharmacy in Portsmouth, R.I.
