Yep, back when he was running for election the first time GWB derided his opponents (gasoline had recently risen in price) by suggesting that he was connected in the oil industry and, by inference, could do something about gasoline prices. Now we know how true that statement was. Gasoline prices are higher than ever.
To borrow from another blog: “It’s not a coincidence that the oil and gas industries donated over $25 million to Congressional campaigns in 2004 (with 80% of that money going into Republican coffers), and another $7.2 million so far in the 2006 cycle (with 84% going to the GOP). They also doled out over $4.5 million to Bush’s 2000 and 2004 presidential runs.
And what did they get for their largess? According to Public Citizen, the top five oil companies have pocketed over a quarter of trillion (that’s with a “T”) in profits since Bush took office. Talk about a return on investment. That’s a gusher!” And Exxon is the biggest company in the world when measured by market value (Fortune magazine).
But Cheney and the WH refused to disclose what was said in the 1st term administration meetings with the energy czars?????? What do they have to hide????

The cartoonist has Bush as an oil lapdog and a poster has him as King Oil.
Meanwhile, back on planet Earth, the democrat obstruction of domestic oil production, ANWR and Continental Shelf, has come home to roost, settling in nicely up everybody’s a-ss.
Mad Scientist Algore and his merry band of Earth savers have just about regulated gas, the so called boutique fuels, to where it costs as much to produce as single malt scotch.
And don’t forget the domestic corn lobby, of course. Another brilliant liberal idea, let’s produce “alternate” fuels, such as corn derived ethanol, which lucky for you, uses more fuel to produce then it creates, and is scarce to boot.
Excellent work, Moonbats!

Big oil keeps saying (and so did pig-boy) that the high prices are due to high demand. Big oil got their “tell a lie often enough…” technique from the administration, or is it the other way around?
Anyone remember the oil embargo and the resulting gas lines? I haven’t seen a single line at a gas station during this gasoline “crisis”. In fact, the only stations having problems getting gas say that the problem is the refiners changing to a different gasoline additive. But the wing-nuts have proven they will believe any lie as long as it is outrageous enough.

The answer, RW (as you well know) is that Exxon is worth more than Walmart (# of shares x share price). In addition, Exxon has more profits. Thank you for emphasizing my point. Exxon has lower sales than Walmart, but makes more profit. More reason for a windfall profit tax.

Facts don’t matter to a wanker, they just pound away on that ole pud:
Later in the week, the Defense Appropriations bill also became a victim of Democratic obstruction. Because Republicans had attached a provision to allow oil exploration in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) to the bill, Democrats vowed to filibuster – even though the bill provides $50 billion in funding for the Global War on Terror and $50 billion for operations in Iraq and Afghanistan – and filibuster they did.

Once again we have the emotionalism without facts. Liberals like to b!tch about things that happen due in large part to their policies (or more specifically a lack of them) on gas prices:
o State/local gas taxes.
o State/local regs on fuel formulas.
o Lack of a willing to explore slate exploration, which has been said to harbor a trillion barrels of oil (yeah, that’s with a T).
o Increased world consumption (I always thought liberals were FOR world “progress.”)
There is plenty of oil in North America, and it is no coincidence that the plurality of our oil import percentage comes from Canada:
“Canada is the US’ largest foreign supplier of energy, including oil, gas, uranium, and electric power.”
http://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/geos/ca.html
I’d still like one liberal out there to ‘splain what he or she means by a “war for oil” every time we go kick a* in the Middle East.

First off, great cartoon! Just what I’d expect from a true Pulitzer Patriot, who is someone who uses his voice in the media to embrace all-American ethics and principles!!
And how ‘BOUT that lapdog President Bush?? His BOLD move to bolster energy supplies?? Temporarily halt 15,000 barrels a day in purchases for the Strategic Oil Reserve. Since the US already imports 10 MILLION barrels a day, that 15,000 is SO worthless…
What about ANWR and continental shelf drilling? Lapdog BUsh at the GOP just don’t care. Despite their control of the White House and Congress… nothing!
No, wait!! Here’s something! Bush is threatening to actually do a certain something he’s never done as President!

This unprecedented ultimatum comes because the bill is loaded with pork backed by GOP Senators who are far more concerned about the gravy train than gasoline prices… or the war in Iraq… or anything butt (hee!) their own backsides.

I have nothing against ANWR and I like caibous! But ANWR is no energy solution for 2 reasons. For starters, it’s not awash in crude, no matter what the big oil shills say. There’s a respectable amount there, but reserves in Saudia Arabia, Iran and Russia dwarf it. And if we start drilling tomorrow (doubtful) it’ll be 5 years minimum before anybody sees a drop of it, and it might satisfy 5% of US energy needs for 50 years before it dries up. That’s it.
It would help if US leaders (not just Bush) thought long term about energy needs. But in the US today, long term thinking prohibits looking ahead more than the next election. And G-d forbid we should look at some 3rd world upstart like BRAZIL and it’s bio-energy program for inspiration! That one’s for you, getalife.

If you had a bunch of kids and a load of sports equipment to cart around you might not look so disparagingly at SUVS (or mini vans).
If Big Oil thought that ANWAR was a bust they wouldn’t bother drilling there, would they? I think you like caribous too much and that’s the problem - because there is no sane reason not to drill there.
I heard some female Dem congressperson saying how alternative fuels would cut oil consumption by 7% and therefore we should go for it.
Great! Why not cut another 7% at Anwar? We’ve been trying to drill their for years and now you way it will take too long. Grrrrrrrr!

Rising oil prices have all their attention. Except Pelosi’s. Was she sleeping? Didn’t she repeat what Bush already said?
The world is a little wobbly on its’ axis and oil prices respond. Conserve. I always have. I didn’t need to wait for somebody to hit me in the head with a 2X4. Global population grows, so does consumption. The Middle East has been in turmoil for as long as I can remember and they sit on top of oil.
Sorry to disappoint all the conspiracy theorists, but this one isn’t Bush’s fault. It belongs to Democrats, Republicans, Conservationists, Government Regulations. You name it, they’ve all been blind.

Buy Danish,
That “bunch of kids and equipment” argument is SO bogus! First, you do not need an overweight, oversized all terrain monster getting 13 miles to the gallon for this. A van would be far more efficient and practical. That’s off the top of my head.
My parents had five kids. We had a Ford station wagon. No problem.
Second, 9 out of 10 SUVs on the road where I live have just one or two people in them. No “equipment”, much less kids.
Compounding this disgraceful consumption? Driving your SUV solo, 40 miles to work and 40 miles back, and THEN whining about gasoline prices. Perverse.
I hope they all have to choose between food and fuel when gasoline hits $4 a gallon. And when they’re forced to sell their beasts, they get pennies on the dollar.
I will laugh and laugh.
You have a lot in common with Big Oil. Like so many instant gratification capitalists (you give the word a bad name), you can’t see the forest for the trees. Bio-fuels? ANWR?? Doesn’t matter. Same road, same cliff. The world’s oil supply is finite. If a long term alternative isn’t found soon, it’s back to bicycles and horses for us. Actually, for our children. But I guess you’d rather use it all up now and let the little buggers walk.

Mike, there you go again, trying to mislead the people with skewed information. When will people realize and tell the truth of who is to blame for the rising oil & gas prices. It is the speculators on Wall Street causing the panic in the oil market. They are scared that China & India are going to start using more & more oil and with supply production stretched to near capacity and the EPA and environmentalist keeping the USA from drilling for new supplies in our own lands.
I know that drilling in Alaska and off our coast will stop us from importing oil, but it could help reduce our dependency long enough to come up with alternate fuel sources.

In the real world, that means merely the oil companies are big, and big companies, if well-run, inherently make big profits. The actual percentage profit, a number used by investors, not blowhards, illustrates this. ExxonMobil had more profit than any other company, but it also is “gi-normous” as a friend of mine used to say. Still, its profit margin was 10.6 percent, placing it at No. 116 on Fortune’s list of top 500 companies.
By contrast, Microsoft made almost 3 times as much — 30.8 percent.

How can ANWR’s 1 million barrels bot make a difference when all these little supplies of oil are making a difference?:
Iraq’s oil output is down nearly 40 percent (or 900,000 barrels per day) from pre-invasion levels; Venezuela’s output remains about 700,000 barrels (more than 20 percent) below its pre-strike levels of a few years ago; strife-torn Nigeria’s daily production has recently fallen by half a million barrels; Hurricanes Katrina and Rita reduced U.S. output and refinery capacity; and the intensifying standoff over Iran’s nuclear program threatens its 4-million-barrel-per-day output. Even Saudi Arabia’s alleged unused capacity of 1.5 million barrels, if it exists at all, is not conducive to the refineries where the oil is needed.
We can keep listening to these anti Americans and watch gas go to $5 a gallon. Or we could become more energy independent and decrease our trade deficit at the same time. Drill for oil!

Republicans in both the House and the Senate view McCarthy as the first of what they believe are four or five individuals who used access to information for political purposes.
“Going back to the Presidential election in 2004, there was a lot of negative information coming out of Democratic campaigns,” says a former Bush Administration staffer. “And it wasn’t the kind of stuff that was readily available from opposition research. This was leaked material. A lot of it wasn’t national security related, but it established a pattern that has followed form for almost two years now. There is orchestrated leaking, and the FBI, the CIA and Congress has to do something about it.”

Pay the pinko at the pump:
According to the Energy Information Agency, almost a quarter of the price of a gallon of gas goes to taxes. Refining costs and oil company profits combined make up less than 20 percent. (Those percentages will be slightly smaller now, with prices having risen so fast in the past month.) But the EIA does not include some local taxes in that count. The Tax Foundation and the American Petroleum Institute found last fall that taxes accounted for 45.9 cents of the cost of each gallon of gas. That’s a United States average, the total differs state to state. It ranged from 26.4 cents in Alaska to 60 cents in California.

It seems as though the Wall Street Journal is our agreed upon credible source, so here you go:
Fired CIA officer Mary O. McCarthy went on offense Monday, denying through her lawyer that she has done anything wrong. But the agency is standing by its claim that she was dismissed last week because she “knowingly and willfully shared classified intelligence.” It has been reported that one of her media contacts was Washington Post reporter Dana Priest, who just won a Pulitzer Prize for her reporting on the so-called “secret” prisons that the CIA allegedly used to house top level al Qaeda detainees in Eastern Europe.
We’re as curious as anyone to see how Ms. McCarthy’s case unfolds. But this would appear to be only the latest example of the unseemly symbiosis between elements of the press corps and a cabal of partisan bureaucrats at the CIA and elsewhere in the “intelligence community” who have been trying to undermine the Bush Presidency.

And again, from the Finch Street Journal:
House Arrest
If Democrats can’t win the Senate, GOP control of Congress is almost certainly safe.
The recent election talk from our pundit class has been about the chances of a Democratic takeover of the House. Many expect this. I am open to this possibility; however, as I have written in the past, I think the data favor a Republican retention. I am also open to, and would be interested to read, a thorough argument that supports a Democratic takeover. Many pundits draw this conclusion, but I have yet to read the support necessary for it. In other words, my real objection is not so much to the conclusions of pundits, but to how they have drawn the conclusions. On the path to a declaration for the Democrats, they all stumble.

Finch says ANWR’s 1 million barrels a day will make no difference, none!, to meeting our energy demands but the front page of the litter box liners “opinion (Rancid Anti American)” section says that Iran exports 2.5 million barrels a day and it rules the whole world. Anybody else see the disconnect here?
I know neither of them have any problems lying:
By finch April 25, 2006 09:29 PM Temporarily halt 15,000 barrels a day in purchases for the Strategic Oil Reserve. Since the US already imports 10 MILLION barrels a day, that 15,000 is SO worthless
The government has been adding an average of about 25,000 barrels of oil per day to the Strategic Petroleum Reserve so far this year. The U.S. imports about 10 million barrels a day.

Iraqi political leaders offered similar endorsements of Maliki. Kurdish leader Barham Salih told me, “This is the opportunity for genuine reconciliation between the communities in Iraq.” Haitham al-Husseini, a senior official in the largest Shiite party, the Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq (SCIRI), predicted that “we will witness a great improvement in the security situation.” He said Maliki’s effort to form a unity government “will be supported by all the other big blocs in parliament,” including the major Sunni parties.

Digging Deeper in The Snow
Obviously Martin @ 6:44 AM, only reads the parts that he thinks Bash Bush. It was during the 2000 campaign and Snow was dissing the Democrats moron.
Gore has more difficulty in this regard. For all his talk of fighting Special Interests in the name of “working families,” he lives for interest groups. Big business decamped at his party’s convention. Oil companies spent lavishly. So did pharmaceutical companies, insurance companies, medical companies, law firms, accounting firms, cyber-retailing empires and Hollywood entertainment conglomerates.
The Gore Democrats believe every faction deserves some dough. Gore dutifully proposed an unprecedented spending spree — as much as $2 trillion in new stuff over the next decade. He has programs for virtually everything. But nobody in his entourage seems to have asked the pertinent question: Has any federal program ever solved a problem and then closed its doors? (The wartime military doesn’t count.) On the tax side, Gore has defined as “rich” anybody who has a job and a mortgage. It would surprise most “working families” that he considers them deserving of a good fleecing.
Bush has a different sort of problem. He has to persuade people he’s smart. He recently tried to dazzle reporters by discussing the vagaries of Congressional Budget Office economic forecasts, but his recitation of numbers proved so bewildering that not even his aides could produce a comprehensible translation. The English Language has become a minefield for the man, whose malaprops make him the political heir not of Ronald Reagan, but Norm Crosby. Who can forget the time he vowed defiantly not to let the opposition put him in cufflinks? (He meant “handcuffs.”) On the policy side, he has become a classical dime-store Democrat. He gladly will shovel money into programs that enjoy undeserved prestige, such as Head Start. He seems to consider it mean-spirited to shut down programs that rip-off taxpayers and mislead supposed beneficiaries. Yes, he proposes an across-the-board tax cut. Yes, he wants to privatize some of Social Security. Yes, he promises to appoint more conservative judges than would Gore. But where do these items stand on his list of priorities?
The worst that Snow said about Bush is that he mangles the english language and I would tend to agree.
I’ll be debunking the rest of Martin’s post later. Just because liberals can’t read doesn’t mean the rest of us can’t.

Digging Deeper in The Snow
Debunking Martin’s post @ 6:44 AM
Bush, for all his personal appeal, ultimately bolstered his detractors’ claims that he didn’t have the drive and work ethic to succeed. He coasted through the last two weeks of the race, smiling and spinning. He and his people left hundreds of thousands of dollars in the bank — refusing to release ads in key states and rejecting advice to give a big, bold, reassuring speech in the wake of the last-minute DUI story. Gore’s decision to litigate until death cast a pall over him, as well. He confirmed suspicions that he views the law not as a brake on misbehavior, but as a tool for getting one’s way — through the use of force, if necessary.
Republicans have special cause for pause. They have boasted in recent years that America has become more conservative, but there’s not much evidence to support the claim. GOP candidates certainly didn’t act as if they thought Reaganesque pronunciamentos would propel them to victory, and the public seems wary of talk about old-fashioned values or virtues. We have become a nation of agnostics, not merely on matters of religion, but also manners and morals.
President Gore could find himself whipsawed between an expectant electorate and a very demanding group of Democratic interest groups — labor unions, trial lawyers, abortion supporters, government employees and environmentalists.
Democrats also need a bigger tent. Al Gore carried the big cities but lost everything else. One look at the electoral map shows the unique nature of his appeal: He carried the Northeast, the industrial Midwest and the West Coast. The rest of the country was pretty much Bush territory. This makes Democrats shudder. Gore won the fastest-shrinking areas of the country — densely populated urban areas — leading to the possibility that his political formula could relegate Democrats to permanent minority status within a decade.
So Bush didn’t even need to spend all of his campaign money to win. Talk of old-fashioned values and virtues got him into the White House, so I guess he knew what he was doing.
One more, let’s see what we can find when we can read.

Driving your SUV solo, 40 miles to work and 40 miles back, and THEN whining about gasoline prices. Perverse.
Finch,
Who is “YOU”? Not ME.
Now, why don’t YOU get your fellow libs on board to drill in ANWAR? It is has national security implications, and YOU are in the party that claims to be “strong on national security”, right? No more excuses or delays - YOU have already wasted 5 precious years.
Admit it - there is no reason not to drill in ANWAR, unless of course YOU are a Marxist who’s fondest dream is to weaken America to the point that we are no longer the world’s most powerful nation.
That’s the real agenda of the Left. ANWAR, spotted owls - they’re nothing but tools to hinder progress. And YOU call yourself a progressive. HA!
YOU Dems are a disgrace. YOU do everything in your power to keep oil prices high with YOUR silly boutique gas rules, bureaucratic regulations that make it impossible to build new refineries, and other hinderances. YOU declaim that high prices are a groovy way to encourage conservation (“look how much Europeans pay - we should be just like them”), but then YOU and Chuckie Schumer complain that prices are too high and it is all Bush’s fault. Why don’t YOU ask Chuckie to stop whining? How’s this for spin: Big Oil raised prices to encourage conservaton. YOU should be happy!
P.S. That station wagon YOUR mom used to drive YOU around in was a pollution machine.
P.P.S How dare YOUR mom have 5 children? Big families are for Capitalist pigs who overpopulate the Earth and take their unfair share of resources.

How do you expect to sway anyone’s opinion when you so profoundly demonstrate your lack of knowledge about an issue?

BD,
Congrats on your Subaru. That was the royal, accusative “you” I was using in my SUV slam, not a personal criticism. And my siblings and I were born before 1960, in the era of $0.30/gallon gas. Long before Zero Population Growth, catalytic converters and fuel economy standards, so no guilt trip here. Find another target for your sarcastic vents.
I harbor no environmental opposition to ANWR or shelf drilling. The caribou and polar bears (and the whales, shrimps and sharks) will surviove nicely. It’s just short sighted. It postpones $10 gallon and above gas for 10 years or less. It’s whistling through the slaughterhouse. Where’s the strategic thinking you BushBots are so smug about?
Or is that part of your plan? You want the US to be caught unprepared for the next inevitable oil crisis. By painting rosy pictures of unlimited ANWR fuel stretching forever and ever, you help convince Americans that cheap and abundant oil is their legacy forever and ever. You want chronic gas lines and uncontrolled inflation. You’d rather see big oil make the quick buck than see development of viable, sustainable and economically feasible energy options.

It just makes more sense to utilize our own oil and natural gas supplies while we are developing alternatives. As for ANWR, YOU don’t know exactly how much oil we will get out of there and neither do I. Even if it only lasts for 10 years, it gives us 10 years to find alternative resources and improve our technology - something YOU and the Left should be happy about.
YOU keep saying that you have nothing against drilling there, but YOU always add that in YOUR opinion it is a bad idea.
As for your royal we bit, where did you come up with the 80 miles round trip figure? The average Atlantan commutes 14 miles each way to work, the second longest commute in the nation

I don’t think that there was anything “royal” about it, unless of course it was just a coincidence that you used that 80 mile figure, which was based on incorrect data?

Rushncap is just SO much smarter than we are. How do I know that?
After he made some brilliant dig to LS&L about his manhood, I asked Rushncap how he would know what a “real man” is. His answer was that he has a mirror, visits his parents, and has male friends.
He also doesn’t know the difference between job and jab which must be because he is the heir to a great fortune and has never held a job, so his ignorance is actually a sign of superiority. Like Paris Hilton not knowing what WalMart is.
See? He is just leagues above the rest of us.

syd,
Try thinking in percentages. Oil company profits are at around 10%. In contrast, Pharmacueticals earn around 30%.
Is 10 cents on the dollar a fair profit?
And here are a few hints as to why gas is so expensive right now:
A barrel of crude is at around $74.00; they are in the midst of switching over from their winter blends to their summer blends AND they have to make different blends, called “boutique” blends for different regions of the country; New refineries haven’t been built in decades, and many of the ones we do have were knocked out by Katrina.
Now ask yourself who is responsible for the above. Dems or Republicans.
The correct answer is: Democrats! (Except for Hurricane Katrina of course - that was Bush’s fault.)

Syd,
Here’s some data for you -
In 2004, governments collected $58 billion in gasoline excise taxes. Overall, governments have collected $1.34 trillion in gasoline excise taxes since 1977.
Oil companies also pay taxes to governments for the right to extract oil from public lands and waters. For example, the federal government has collected a total of $48.8 billion in royalty payments from oil companies in exchange for their ability to explore and drill in the U.S. outer continental shelf. Oil companies also pay severance taxes to state governments for the right to drill on state lands.
Guess who pays to cover these taxes that are levied on the oil companies? We do!

By N-GA February 18, 2006 09:16 PM BTW, My daughter has Multiple Sclerosis. She is 37 years old, and her insurance plan is private (through a small privately-held company). The insurance company has tried every year to look for a way to cancel her policy. If they ever succeed, no one else will insure her….no one…period!!! If that happens, she will have to rely on medicare/medicaid (something that most of you neo-cons consider charity). Many mediacl services (doctors, labs, clinis, etc.) refuse to accept medicare/medicaid because the reimbursements are too low.

Well, only two people responded to my question about a fair price oil companies should be making. And those two did not bite. People…listen!!! You need to be focusing on margins (%) here, not dollars. The oil companies only are making about 8-10 cents on every dollar sold at the pump. That is a rather small margin. The reason their profits are so high is because we keep buying more. Only the gov’t reduces gas taxes, there is not much they can do.

RE, thanks for admitting you are such a gimp dumba-ss that you have to rely on the lies of other liberals so that you can participate in the discussion. You are basically to stupid to fabricate your own lies about me.
Or to read on your own:
There is nothing else that can be read into this. N-GA Wanker lied about being a millionaire, said that his daughter had to have help from the insurance company, I called him on his lie and said, exactly as it is reposted, that I would help her for him.
You hate speech liberals are the ones reading rape and sex into it. That is because you are pinkos and it’s how you function. You have no other recourse except to lie and fake things and make things up. It’s what liberalism is all about.

pauly,
On the contrary, the President has quite a bit of sway over oil prices. If it weren’t for Bush’s pointless invasion of Iraq and his inexplicable ignorance of Iran’s nuclear intentions, the Persian Gulf wouldn’t be the mess it is today.
And we wouldn’t be looking at $3 a gallon gasoline. Anyone for $4?
It’s kind of an academic argument, though. By vowing to prosecute profiteers, tap into the strategic oil reserve program, and push for alternative energy, President Bush has acknowledged that indeed he does have an effect on oil/gasoline prices.
And Kevin, your charge that I’m condescending is just so… condescending?? But I still don’t hate you!!

Syd,
You bring up a good point on profit margin, I have not done the research so lets agree to accept that the oil companies make 8-10 cents profit on each dollar of gas sold. If the profit margin is dictated by the dollar amount sold instead of the gallons of gas sold, than oil companies have a vested interest in keeping the price high.
For example, if a company sells one gallon of gas at 1.50, the oil company profits about 14 cents. but for that same gallon sold at 3.00, it would profit 28cents.
This means that the best way to increase profit is to raise gas prices, seeing how domestic demand for gas has not increased significantly, and demand is out of the control of an oil company, supply side manipulation seems to be at work. By decreasing production, they stand to make a greater profit. I am not sure how many oil companies there are, Exxon Mobil, BP-shell, Citgo, Conoco… but it seems like there are few enough of them for some collusion on pricing. Anyone else out there remember last year when gas was at 3.00/gal and the oil exec were called in to testify to congress. Amazingly enough, gas prices dropped a dollar in one month. What market force do you suppose did that?

Dusty,
Explain precisely how Carter’s policies are causally connected with the current gas prices. And can you do that without calling someone names? (That’s a challenge I wager you would lose every time.)
You don’t seem to recall that the Saudis restricted the oil supply in 1979 and before that OPEC boycotted the United States when Nixon was in office. This was what caused the increases at that time, not Carter’s policies. Neither of the policies of those presidents have anything serious to do with the current prices.
If the United States had heeded the warnings of Carter (long before Bush’s belated concession that we are addicted to oil) and began conserving and looking for other sources of energy to reduce our dependency we wouldn’t be in the mess we are in now.
The “free market” is the main reason that gasoline prices are up, Chinese demand in particular. 60 million barrels pumped out of the ground every day and 20 million go to the United States. And most people, including those who drive 6500 pound SUVs whine at every increase at the pump as if they have an indestructible birthright to cheap oil. We don’t and we will continue to pay for the consequences of oil dependency in manifold ways.
And drilling in Alaska would make about 3% difference in that dependency, so don’t recite that silly line again.

I responded twice. at 1:11 and 1:24. I said “Oil company profits are at around 10%” and “Is 10 cents on the dollar a fair profit?” I then provided a link that showed how much we are paying in taxes per gallon, and how much the oil companies pay in taxes to the government just for the rights to drill for oil.
Doesn’t that qualify as a “bite”. Glad you get it - I think.

Hate radio flourishes amid fear, resentment
I hate hate radio.
It is polarizing American politics. Much as the Iraqi insurgents seek to split their society, this strident scream aims to split ours. Positions are driven by fear and resentment instead of informed discourse. Do many conservatives endorse this scream stream? The format obviously pays.
Maybe those of us who disapprove should use the Web to identify hate radio sponsors. We might then communicate our dismay and boycott their products.

Gas taxes
Most states have a set tax per gallon, georgia has a combined tax per gallon plus 4% sales tax. So in general, the amount of tax on the gas remains the same no matter what the price is, in fact as a percentage, the higher price per gallon effectively reduces the percentage of the tax. High prices are not due to gas tax.

Hey Andy,
I see that ya’ll have been discussing some things that went on between Andy and me some time ago. I also noticed that he accuses me of lying about my daughter, my economic position, etc.
First let me respond by saying that EVERYTHING I said is absolutely true. I would much rather that my daughter did not have MS, but that is not the case. At first I thought that I would be angry & upset about Andy’s comments, but then realized that he must get up every morning and look in the mirror. What he sees looking back at him is a cretin full of loathing for itself.
He talks about things like his opposition to abortion because of the sanctity of human life. From this you would suppose he has some Christian qualities. But then you read his posts and profound hypocrisy emerges. It comes from his feelings of self-disgust and inferiority.
I bash Andy and, I admit, it makes me feel better because I can only vent my frustration with the direction our country is going by beating on Andy….he’s an easy target. He mouths thoughts so extreme that they cry for a response.
While Andy calls others liars, he is the real liar. He posted here more than once that he had apologized for his remarks about my daughter. I’ve asked him to post a re-print of any apology, but he couldn’t. He lied about that apology. He then said he would never respond to my posts again…as you can see he “talks” to me all the time.
He is a hypocrite, a liar, and a bed wetter. And nothing he says or does will ever change that.

RE,
Got caught in cross-posting and missed your 4:28.
I know I only made it through second grade, but my elementary education tells me that your analysis is incorrect.
While you are right that the State does not profit from the unchanging base rate portion of the tax, then when the price goes up and the state takes its 4%, the state collects more money.
Let me rephrase that - the State PROFITS when the price goes up.
For those who prefer actual data that they can interpret themselves, here’s a great link that shows how prices fluctuate
Note the mysterious correlation between crude oil and retail prices. Also note how the price spiked after Bush unleashed Hurricane Katrina.

BD, I don’t even know why I bother, but most states have a set tax per gallon so they do not fluctuate with price. Georgia and a few other states are the exception.
Scooter, Thanks for the FYI, I admit I do not know a great deal about this subject, but it seems the profit margin is based upon total sales, not total units. If they had a set profit, say $0.25 per gallon of gas, their profit margin would plummet as prices rise. That is not the case, profit margin remains stable as price rises, therefore it must be linked to total dollars sold, not total gallons sold. What I am saying is that there is an inherent profit motive for the companies to keep prices high.

N-GA- Glad to hear your daughter’s prognosis is good. My brother’s youngest daughter had leukemia and even though he and his wife both had insurance through their work (she was only 10 and covered on both policies), they were bankrupted after they maxed out both their policies. A million bucks is chickenfeed when it comes to those kinds of medical treatments. Fortunately, my niece is in her first year of college and in perfect health (knock on wood). All my brothers’ retirement funds were forfeited (they did get to keep their house) but who knows if they’ll ever be able to recover before retirement. The general public just doesn’t realize how little their ERISA based work policies (signed into law by President Ford) are worth when something really catastrophic happens.
FYI- ERISA (insurance you get through work) gives insurance providers blanket immunity from prosecution for non-performance. The Republicans sold that hogwash to the public by saying it would give employers the incentive to provide coverage. This incident turned me from a Republican to a Democrat for all time.

If this ain’t proof that the Iraq war WMD evidence is real, who knows what is:
That the Iraqi peril was a phantom, all but the pro-war diehards now concede. On the current menace posed by Iran, there is no such consensus. Some cannot help but feel sceptical as they hear London and Washington warn of Tehran’s nuclear ambitions: yeah, yeah, that’s what you said last time.
Iran has made like announcements to the world. And the pinkos still don’t believe it. So Bush must have been right about WMD.

How many of you people out there actually think that the price of gas has anything to do with who the president is? WHY?

For decades Democrats have been trying to raise the price of gasoline so that the working class will stop their infernal car-driving and start riding on buses where they belong, while liberals ride in Gulfstream jets.
Guess who.

I posted the wrong paragraph, er, well, here’s another one:
Gary Hart, another whimsical demonstration of what Democrats think a president should be like, said at the time, “I certainly favor consumption taxes, particularly on energy.” Then there’s John Kerry, who favored a 50-cent increase in the gas tax in 1994. If he were a rap artist, Kerry’s stage name would be “Fifty Cent a Gallon.”

Oh, what the hell, I’ll just post the whole article:
The Democrats’ only objection to current gas prices is that the federal government’s cut is a mere 18.4 cents a gallon. States like New York get another 44 cents per gallon in taxes. The Democratic brain processes the fact that “big oil companies” get nearly 9 cents a gallon and thinks: WE SHOULD HAVE ALL THAT MONEY!

Kevin,
Sometimes it’s better than others and you can usually bypass most of the worst of it. Several of us have written to that address up ^ ^ ^ there where Peggy wants to have Andy banned for someone else’s transgression and asked them to please just set up name protection. If they did they would have a pretty good site for both sides to debate, but they refuse so I guess this is what they want.
Maybe they just want an excuse to shut this site down when the elections start to get close.
(It also used to post immediately, there’s no telling why they screwed that up because it sure wasn’t for comment moderation)
Drop by here sometime, both sides can be heard but it’s much more civil.

Reason and civility, arguing in the sense of respectfully giving reasons that should or might appeal to anyone, irrespective of political ideology seem to have no place in this domain. The viciousness, hate, and diatribe offered on all sides here exceeds anything I have ever encountered in my life.
One may as well pay for admission to the “abuse room” in the Monty Python argument sketch as to become involved in “discussions” in this blog. What kind of person chooses “liberals suck and lie” as a handle or praises a convicted murderer or savages anyone with a slightly different view? This is like stumbling into a fascist Alice in Wonderland and a horrifying experience.

There are those who would hope to escape the pain of war. Can’t we just live and let live and pretend every thing is OK? Let’s discuss, negotiate, reason together. The film accurately shows an enemy who will stop at nothing in a quest for control. This enemy does not seek our resources, our land or our materials, but rather to alter our very way of life.
I encourage my fellow Americans and free people everywhere to see “United 93.”

May the taste of freedom for people of the Middle East hasten victory. The enemy we face does not have the word “surrender” in their dictionary. We must not have the word “retreat” in ours. We surely want our troops home as soon as possible. That said, they cannot come home in retreat. They must come home victoriously. Pray for them.

You are unable to differentiate between someone who buys crack on a street corner just to get high, or who shoots heroin into their veins just to get high, from someone who is prescribed an addictive pain killer by their physician because they are in pain, and…becomes addicted to it.
How can a genius like you waste your time here with lesser mortals like us?
