I guess it was all ml could stand after scribbling a real event yesterday. Of course in taking this cheap shot the “artist” has denigrated every man and woman in our Armed Forces, our International security alliances, our transportation security officers, the CIA, FBI, and the Secret Service.
Maybe we should just start asking why the Prophet Mohamed is looking in the Oval Office window. That should put ml into hiding for awhile.

Little late on this one ML. The President hasn’t said a word about bin Laden for a couple of years now; he finally got tired of looking dumb. What’s it been, now, nearly 5 years since 9/11? By making a figurehead and martyr of bin Laden on international TV and counting his chickens before they hatched, the President has insured that America will look inept to the rest of the world for as long as bin Laden lives. Another “job well done” for Bush! Toon does a good job of capturing the frustration the President must feel when confronted with his own failures.

But hey - we’re WINNING big the “war” in Iraq - just as precisely predicted by all sanity. My own notes of long ago are eerily accurate. Just happening a tad quicker than I said. Couple months. And now the REAL show begins. 25,000 American casualties later. Let’s see how the Bushmongers handle this one. And the slaughter’s not over yet. Courtesy, Republiscum all. -Night zzzzzzZZZZZZZZ

Jay not Jay: Sorry but Pakistan might well not help even if Bush does want bin Ladens’ head. Problem is this guy has the succor of religious radicals who have turned down over $30 million in bounties every day for the past 4 years. The President underestimated the religious fervor that exists in the Middle East and by succumbing to his penchant for braggarding, has made America look inept each and every day that bin Laden eludes capture. The President alone bears responsibility for thinking with his balls instead of his brains. Can’t blame this one on staff, the Dems, the price of tutti-frutti, or today’s relative humidity (though I’m certain the “Way-Rights” will find some way to excuse their “Master”, who is never responsible for anything you know).

If the US had sent huge numbers of troops to Afghanistan and Pakistan, instead of Iraq, maybe Osama would be a Gitmo guest right now. Or maybe he’d be dead. I’ll take either over him playing peekaboo in the Afghan-Pakistani mountains.
Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf is caught between a rock and a hard place. He’s damned if he helps capture OBL and damned if he doesn’t. For now, he seems willing to leave Osama alone.
We asked President Musharaff who he thinks is more popular in Pakistan — the United States or Osama bin Laden?
“That’s a very difficult question,â€? Mr. Musharaff replied. “Maybe Osama bin Laden. In the man in the street, it may be Osama bin Laden.â€?
Musharraf is a coward who is playing the US for fools by harboring terrorists through inaction. With friends like these…

finch,
Buckley is unfortunately no longer a spokesperson for the right. His intellect and reasoned approach together with his unfailing courtesy have been replaced by the shrill voice of the Coulters of the political world (all too often on both sides.) It is too bad that true conservatives like Buckley no longer have much say in the GOP. We are left with the idealogues and there in no way to have a reasoned dialogue with an idealogue. Nor are they likely to admit mistakes.

Dusty,
finch has a good link to a post from a true conservative, William Buckley, Jr. I think you should read it and consider moderating your condemnation of liberals and at least acknowledging that more and more conservatives are having doubts about the course Bush has chosen. BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - A car bomb exploded in a Shiite holy city and 13 members of one Shiite family were gunned down northeast of the capital Saturday in a surge of attacks that killed at least 30 people despite heightened security aimed at curbing sectarian violence following the bombing of a revered Shiite shrine.
Only 30 killed? That’s it? Zarqawi usually gets 30 by himself. It looks like even Al Qaeda is standing down. It’s a veritable land of peace in old Asia, the Sunni and Shiite brothers have practically taken to singing lullabyes to each other. If this were America we could call it Brokeback Desert…

Washington State,
I know that William Buckley, Jr. is a well known conservative. But he’s thrown in the towel before the bell rings.
If Buckley want to “acknowledge defeat” that is his business. Anybody can be a loser. We can all be well informed with all of the communication of today. But to declare defeat before a war is over, shows a degree of spinelessness that I don’t have.
So STOP SNIVELING. To treat this subject a little more lightly I will say: It aint over ‘til the fat lady sings.

Washington State:
And in December, 2005, Buckley had this to say:
This does not mean that the effort should be abandoned — especially at this point, when there is formal hope, arising out of the elections, that democratic practices will take hold. Whoever the council chooses as prime minister must make this point most emphatically: that the Muslim faith is honored by rejecting theological presumption that refuses to share power with people of different faiths.
Opinions change with the prevailing winds. The objective is to change the direction of the prevailing winds, if possible. Those who loose their footing in the shift of the those winds are………I don’t know, human? The threat of “radical Muslims” has been imbedded long before Bush took office, I’m glad he had the courage to recognize it and stand firm in the windshift of public opinion.

OO, pointing out that Clinton boggled his chance to get Osama is not running with the “Clinton did it too” crowd. It does make one wonder why Bush, with Americans positively lusting for OBL after 9/11 chose to divert the bulk of US military resources to Iraq, where neither Osama nor Al-Qaeda was hiding. Oh, and no WMDs, either. What a waste of American lives and money.
Meanwhile, President Bush has done an about face on Osama. He’s gone from America’s Most Wanted to a footnote.
In this sense, Mike’s cartoon scores points. It’s been 4+ years since 9/11, and OBL and cohort Zaraqiri (hiding in the mountains of stalwart allies (sarcasm) Pakistan and Afghanistan) are still going “nyahh nyahh, can’t catch us! nyahh nyahh!”

As an American, I never found myself lusting after OBL in retaliation for 9/11. He was just the hand holding the match. I had, however, been watching his game being played out over many, many years. Didn’t get the attention I believe he deserved then either.
I tend to agree with the leaders in the heart of the Middle East. Who better to know the influence of a neighbor than the ones who live nearby. He has become a footnote. Leave him at the bottom of the page and read the full text. Radical Muslims are the threat, and they are from all over the middle east.

Cpl. Wassef Ali Hassoun will also be charged by the Marine Corps with larceny and wrongful disposition of military property in connection with his service-issued 9 mm handgun that disappeared with him and never turned up, officials said.](http://www.cnn.com/2004/LAW/12/09/hassoun.desert/)
Another Marine we should be “proud” of.
We could keep this up all day, you know? The Marines, like an large group, has the “Good, the Bad, and the Ugly” within its’ ranks. This organization certainly has much more “Good” than “Bad” but that doesn’t mean “Bad” doesn’t exist. Sorry that you, like so very many, pull up short of supporting your country when it comes time for you to pull out the wallet. I guess REALLY your “greenbacks” mean much more to you than the welfare of the nation does, right? All your sort ever does is look for ways to avoid your responsibilities. The country needs your tax dollars to fight the scourge of terrorism; how much extra are you planning on sending in this tax season! RW- I am not talking about charitable giving. TAX DOLLARS support the war effort, not charities. If someone REALLY supports the war, they should be willing to support it by paying for it. If you support it more; you should pay more. Frankly, I’m tired of paying for the “Great Iraqi Welfare Program”. If you tax us too much you end up with less, not more money for the war. So I figure I’m doing my duty by helping the economy roll on as best as possible.

I can just imagine Queen Pinko typing up this week’s column with a full blown grimace planted firmly on her face. She knows d-amn good and well that Bush is right about the ports deal, but saying that would put her at odds with the party moonbats.
Still in all, even Cybil didn’t swap personalities as many times as Mother Lib does. Which one is it, good Bush or bad Bush?
But he has hardly used his bully pulpit to tamp down xenophopia. He has never had a Sister Souljah moment, when he forcefully and publicly confronted the hateful, natavist elements in his party. So what would we call sticking to his guns on this port deal, standing up against majorities in both parties against discrimination?
I don’t know who in the h-ell General Boykin is, or why Bush has been tasked to keep an eye on him, but people who have Howard Dean and Cynthia McKinney running loose in their party shouldn’t be broaching the subject of “bigots.”

Venezuela said this week it would halt Delta Air Lines (DALRQ.PK: Quote, Profile, Research) and Continental Airlines (CAL.N: Quote, Profile, Research) flights and restrict flights by American Airlines (AMR.N: Quote, Profile, Research) effective March 1 as it demanded Washington lift restrictions placed on Venezuelan carriers a decade ago.
Venezuela has delayed a suspension of some U.S. passenger and cargo flights until March 30 while the government holds talks with U.S. carriers over the restrictions, authorities said on Saturday

What bothers me the most about this whole sordid little affair is that the Iraqi (Asians) citizens remained calmer than the Americans did. What’s up with that? Bill Buckley wet his panties over something Al Qaeda perpetrated because they knew Americans would wet their panties.

finch & Andy,
The AJC story has a different take on who is responsible for the mosque:
Security forces extended a curfew aimed at curbing the religious strife that began with Wednesday’s bombing, presumably by Sunni extremists, of a Shiite holy shrine in the city of Samarra.
I heard those peace-marching Iraqis that I saw on the Fword News Network blame Zarqawi, but maybe the AJC knows better.
Or maybe poor Zarqawi is being made the scapegoat by peace loving Iraqis who are eager to prevent a civil war and thus deflect blame away from Sunnis.

No one tracks — or even counts — the small stuff, but NASA estimates there are at least 100,000 pieces of debris the size of a dime or larger — and “tens of millions” of birdshot-sized fragments — hurtling around the globe many times faster than a speeding bullet.
Too small to worry about? Not when the closing speed between an errant wing nut and a billion-dollar spacecraft can be 30,000 mph. And not when the quantity of debris — 5,000 tons of it — is growing by the year.

2 U.S. GIs Among 21 Dead in Iraq Violence
When WILL it end?
Buy Danish,
I don’t think anybody really knows who is to blame for the Golden Mosque bombing yet. Sunni radicals? Zarqawi, the sociopath freelancer? Motives abound. But it’s interesting to note that almost nobody is accusing Osama, and Al Qaeda (the real one) hasn’t said a word.
As for the post bomb violence, I’d guess that all anyone has to do there is pick up a flag, an RPG launcher or an AK-47 and you’ve got a civil disturbance.
I like your choice of music. That Byrds song is cool, but I think they plagarized the lyrics.

RW,
For starters, they aren’t MY “union goons”. Tsk, tsk.
The point is, even if Al Qaeda’s silent on the bombings, almost no one of any credibility is even speculating that they could be responsible.
Good reason for that, I think. Al Qaeda’s made it blindingly clear that it wants to unite the Islamic world against Americans and Jews. It wants to create a one world order where only sharia is law. Formenting a civil war in Iraq, where Muslims are killing eachother (ignoring Americans and other infidels) would be a tad counterproductive, wouldn’t it?

Was that really you??? All we’ve been hearing from your side is that there will be a massive civil war and that it plays right into the hands of Al Qaeda because Iraq will be in chaos. finch -
MY MY we are p****** today. I quote Iraqis who, unlike you, are actually on the scene, and THEY blame Al Qaeda. But you don’t consider that a reliable source and prefer to rely on the MSM.
But most important, wasn’t it YOU who linked the Zawahiri/Zarqawi letter for us? Apparently you have been so focused on a minor disagreement over Jihadist techniques that you have missed the BIG picture: That Al Qaeda wants there to be civil war so Americans like you will get all wobbly in the knees and pull out of Iraq.
Why would they want that? So that Osama “the footnote” Bin Laden/Zawahiri/Zarqawis or any garden variety Islamofascist leader can move forward with their grand plan for a Caliphate in Iraq and “surrounding countries”. Just one step in their lovely vision of total world domination.

From the peaceful, sleepy pre civil war days in Iraq (Asia.):
Insurgents Kill 140 as Iraq Clashes Escalate
BAGHDAD, Jan. 5, 2006 — The residents of Ramadi had had enough. As they frantically searched the city’s hospital for relatives killed and wounded in bomb blasts at a police recruiting station Thursday, they did something they had never publicly done: They blamed al Qaeda in Iraq, the insurgent movement led by Abu Musab Zarqawi.
140 killed in one day last month.

Alright, fess up. How many of you pinkos are sweating the space debris?
So if one of the bigger reasons for you to even exist is to put the space shuttle into orbit and return it to Earth safely, but it isn’t something you are very good at, how else would you go about justifying your massive budget and legions of pinko bureaucrats? Hummmmm. Let’s see. I know! Let’s harass the public about our space junk. We know that you stand a greater chance of being killed from the shuttle coming apart over your house the next time we launch it, but so what. Let’s see if we can make the libs panic!
I always figured if a random 1/2” bolt, traveling at 30,000 miles per hour, finds the top of my head, there’s not much I’ll be able to do about it. But seeing how it has like never happened before and the odds are like incalculable, it doesn’t bode well for the future of space travel if this is what NASA is choosing to focus on. Shouldn’t they be working on a space craft that can survive the journey into space? Seems straightforward enough, don’t it?
You have to remember that these are the same government subsidized pinkos that got swept away in the freon environmental damage craze, so much that they changed the foam on the shuttle fuel tanks to a more “environmentally friendly” type. That’s right, the same foam that came off in mid flight and hit the orbiter, dooming all of those astronauts.
By my count NASA has a higher body count then any ozone depleting “damage” that has ever been done. But since we didn’t release any freon, it’s a liberal victory!

Standing up a civilized society and transforming the Middle East into a self sufficient and peaceful area may be a nearly impossible goal, but it’s much better than what the status quo had brought us and it’s not the same as creating a permanent underclass on our own shores. Now if you think that our military is part of a “welfare state”, then you are even loonier than even your wacko economic theories revealed.
P.S.
MOST Iraqis are trying, under very difficult circumstances, to implement democracy and become independent - They are not laying around with their hands out and smoking crack. It is going to take time and effort and sadly, American lives will be lost. It is not a 2 hour movie and a bag of popcorn. War is hell. What else is new?
The sooner you get on board, the quicker it will happen. So stop whining about how you don’t want to pay for it, as if you are and we aren’t.

If you’re still wondering why health care costs so much:
Since 2003, the Manhattan Institute (which I am advising on a book project) has examined what it calls “Trial Lawyers Inc.” (triallawyersinc.com). Twice the size of Coca-Cola, the $40 billion litigation industry is a hulking Goliath, not the plucky David it fancies itself. To gauge its impact, consider the 406 percent increase in per-doctor malpractice insurance premiums between 1975 and 2003. Simultaneously, medical-care inflation grew 525 percent, while Trial Lawyers, Inc. turbocharged medical-malpractice expenses 2,108 percent, to $26.5 billion.
Insurers shield themselves from massive payouts by charging doctors more for malpractice coverage. Average policies rose 18 percent in 2003 alone: Chicago-area obstetricians watched their premiums zoom 67 percent to $230,428.

It’s basically the same security measures employed at airports. I still think they should search much more than 5% of the containers completely. All you need is a need or desire to get something through and people can get it done, like drugs at airports.

I’m being misinterpeted again, RW…
“All we’ve been hearing from your side is that there will be a massive civil war and that it plays right into the hands of Al Qaeda because Iraq will be in chaos.”
I don’t know about “my side” (whatever that is) but thats not what you’ve been hearing from me. Yes, there could (I hope not) be civil war in Iraq. But I never said it would play into the hands of Al Qaeda. In fact, a civil war would be counter-productive to Al-Qaeda, whose leadership is Wahhabi Sunni, because most of Iraq is Sh-ia, and danged if those two don’t hate eachother.
Iraq will not be the crown jewel of a new Caliphate. It will just be another oil rich backwater in the Arab world where differences will be settled with or without US help/interference. Only, if the US doesn’t interfere, it doesn’t bleed cash and troops. Iraq failed to export trouble under Saddam (Kuwait failed, remember?) and it will have a tough time doing it after him.
The real threat of a growing Caliphate is in Saudia Arabia. Where even more oil is. Where Mecca is. Where the Wahhabi are. Where Osama’s influence grew and is still centered. It ain’t Iraq. But the Bush administration did, and does, turn a blind eye to that.
Buy Danish,
“I quote Iraqis who, unlike you, are actually on the scene,” And I’ve quoted Iraqis who are on the scene and don’t say a word about Osama or Al Qaeda. If they’re Sunni they blame Sh-ia. And vice versa.
It wasn’t the US’s fight. The US shouldn’t be in Iraq. It should be chasing the real international terrorists. They aren’t in Iraq. They’re somewhere else… Saudi Arabia, Syria maybe, or Pakistan, planning stuff that could haunt our dreams.

RW et al -
FWORD News Network ran a story during the dinner hour that described how contractors in NOLA had been on the job for many months, had yet to be paid, and were on the verge of quitting.
Why? Because FEMA has to sign of on every itty bitty request. OMIGOD as they say.
This may be one of the best illustrations ever why it is foolish to rely on the Federal Government for local issues. What the feds should be doing is giving Louisiana a check for X amount, that is administered locally, (by the albeit incompetent) Gov, senate, and mayor of NOLA.
Currently it is like posting on this blog. It takes too long and since the replies end up out of synch, they often don’t make sense.

Like the Electoral College, I see the wisdom of the 17th. Without it, States would lose power to the federal govt. and our govt. would be entirely population-centered with big bad blue states like California or NY in charge.
As an erstwhile Mainiac, I know how exasperating it is to have Sens like Snowe & Collins gumming up the works, but I believe that it beats the alternative.
By RW-(the original)
February 26, 2006 08:53 PM | Link to this
Buy Danish,
I don’t see how the way the Senators are chosen would have anything to do with the population center problem that scrapping the Electoral college would create.
There would still be two from every state and the Senators would be looking out for the States interest rather than the electorate. The House would look out for the peoples business as was intended. That is why every member of the House faces election in every cycle. Of course, gerry mandering has made that useless as well.
I’m not one of these zealots about getting rid of the 17th amendment, but DavidU’s story brought out one of it’s biggest problems. Those Governors shouldn’t have to be doing this themselves.
One thing for sure, though. Without it the States would have more not less power and I generally think that is, as Martha might say, a good thing.
Sorry for rambling, but my cable is screwing up and I am on dial-up.

BD - The 17th Amendment changed the wording from Senators “chosen by the Legislature thereof” to “elected by the people thereof.” So it took away from the interest of the States. But from what I’ve been reading, the old way was not working so a change had to be made. Can you imagine a state being so inept that it neglects to elect a Senator for 4 years?

Enroute to WalMart (HA HA) I heard a snippet of an amusing bit on Neal Boortz about now to write liberal-socialist”hate mail”, and what familiar de rigeur words are required: Nazi, Hitler, fascist, neo-con, neo-Nazi were among them. A new one for me, to use when “discussing” immigration issues was “minuteclan”, along with the predictable “anti-Latino” and “anti-immigrant”.
Boortz pointed out that NAZI stood for “National Socialist Party” and therefore it was not without irony that Socialists fire the NAZI word at Bush.

March 1, 2006 — THE reporting out of Baghdad continues to be hysterical and dishonest.
By RALPH PETERS - In Iraq’
Yesterday, I crisscrossed Baghdad, visiting communities on both banks of the Tigris and logging at least 25 miles on the streets. With the weekend curfew lifted, I saw traffic jams, booming business — and everyday life in abundance.
Yes, there were bombings yesterday. The terrorists won’t give up on their dream of sectional strife, and know they can count on allies in the media as long as they keep the images of carnage coming. They’ll keep on bombing.
