My, oh my, it just goes to show you that hope really does spring eternal, especially when hope is all you have.
Cartoon boy has hit on a good point here, although I seriously doubt he was thinking the same way I am, that Bush, like Nixon before him, also hasn’t done anything worthy of impeachment.
If you think a two bit political burglary and a shoddy attempt to cover it up is grounds to impeach a sitting president, then you missed some recent democratic party antics such as stealing a Republican opponent’s credit report, recording a GOP adversary private phone calls and a certain president who lied in front of the whole entire nation “I did not have sex with that woman, Ms. Lewinsky.”
The biggest thing this grade school day dream brings up is the fact that the pinkos don’t have anywhere near the power that they had when the lied their way to Nixon’s demise.
Nope, this new and improved democratic party doesn’t control the media or any branch of government, thank God Almighty. They can lie, defame and distort all the want, you and I will find the truth and share it with everybody.

I’m frankly amazed at your legal talent. Many Constitutional scholars have debated whether the “terrorist surveillance program” is legal under Article II of the Constitution or if it should be governed by laws such as FISA. You, on the other hand, say simple research is all that’s necessary.
One simple piece of research I know of tells me that no law can supersede the Constitution. That’s why we have such a high standard for an amendment.

At the risk of upsetting you even further, Andy, I’ve never had a problem with the health care probvided by the VA. Of course a lot of that may have to do with ther fact that I am rated 100% disabled, service connected, resulting from injuries received in combat. Veterans with service connected disdabilitioes have priority. My brothers, also veterans, have no real gripes about their care either. Ricky, I have read Leo Strauss. I have read William Krystol. Their neo-conservative philosophy cannot exist in a free society. The Cheney side of this administration are disciples of neo-conservatism and the scary thing is that they will do whatever it takes to force this philosophy on this country. One of the preferred tactics of the left, that you seem to have adopted, is to parrot the same talking point until they believe it is accepted by the general public as truth. “Domestic surveillance” is a great example. There is no evidence that there is any such program, but you jump right on the band wagon.

Semper Fi.It was while grilling Condi Rice on why the intel was ignored that this came up. And yes, to be fair Clinton was remiss as well. But Bush did make the “swatting flies” statement and the concern was that in spite of what others did not do before him, he had the chance to prevent 9/11 if he had listened to the intel people and “swatted” a few of those “flies.”

One thing I respect about Bush(and there aren’t many) is that he will at least make a decision and go with it. People claim Bush is dumb just like they did with Reagan. They will tell you that Carter was much smarter(a lot of good that did him). Nixon was thought to be very intelligent and he was a horrible president. I don’t think you can paint with a broad bush and say that great leaders are all intellectuals. Probably most are, but not all.

If I had a sudden yen to burn the Yemeni or Sudanese flag on my village green, I haven’t a clue how I’d get hold of one in this part of New Hampshire. Say what you like about the Islamic world, but they show tremendous initiative and energy and inventiveness, at least when it comes to threatening death to the infidels every 48 hours for one perceived offense or another. If only it could be channeled into, say, a small software company, what an economy they’d have.

And, in Bush’s case at least, they think stupidity is a good thing. They persistantly believe that Iraq had WMDs and a nuclear program, and even worse, was implicated in 9/11. Even Cheney is denying the latter some of the time nowadays.
Winning is all to them, and it doesn’t matter if one of their own has to lie about the parentage of an innocent adopted child in order to get votes from racists or if the reputations of men who served honorably in combat must be destroyed to protect that of a deserting coward. And, somehow, they seem able to maintain the delusion that God is on their side. (Never mind the prohibition on bearing false witness).
These bozos cheerfully send hundreds of thousands of our military off to possible dismemberment or death because they won’t or can’t admit that it was a mistake to vote for a guy who makes a specialty of “getting away with stuff.” A guy whose parents or their corporate cronies unfailing bailed him out of every problem with the law, the military, or his businesses.
It is PATHETIC watching these lemmings twist themselves into pretzels trying to rationalize the stupidity and craziness of this administration.
Oh yeah, they really scream a lot about unqualified liberals who hang onto their teaching jobs via tenure and teacher’s unions…the moron who insisted that there was a border between Wyoming and Canada claimed to be a teacher with 20 years of experience. I wonder how many children SHE has left behind.

RW, there you go again! “My Name Is Earl” is, hands down, the best new show on TV.
But a question. One justification that you and others have made for the US invasion of Iraq in 2003 was Iraq’s repeated attempts to down US and British aircraft enforcing the “no fly” zones over Iraq.
But the “no fly” zones weren’t a condition of the UN cease fire. They were unilaterally imposed by the US, Britain and (for a time) France.
Therefore, the argument that UN cease fire violations justified the US invasion is highly suspect.
I’m not even going to get into the “Iraq had no WMDs and no Osama connections” arguments, since those puppies have been beaten to death here.
No such argument can be made about the Afghanistan invasion. Al Qaeda was based in Afghanistan. The Taliban protected it before and after 9/11, which was an attack against the US. Case closed.

Here’s a bipartisan one: The FDA doesn’t have enough people assigned to keep up with the backlog of applications for generic drugs. The feds don’t plan on changing that. Next year, they will fall even further behind. Every year that a drug is kept from the generic market costs consumers millions of dollars(and coincidentally makes millions for the pharmaceutical industry.) Write your congressmen and tell them that this is a disgraceful situation that needs to be changed. Buying cheaper generic drugs is one of the ways our president has suggested to cut down on medical costs.

Andy: It doesn’t surprise me that there are reports of soldiers chaffing at the weight of body armor. When I served in Viet Nam in 1969 the big baga boo was about the army issued steel pot that many refused to wear, opting instead for the soft cammo cap. Complaints with regards to the pot were that it was too heavy and uncomfortable, and restricted vision. The doctor who performed the cranioplasty (sp?) on me assured me that had I not been wearing a steel pot (which I did religiiously even though it was uncomfortable and the band on the liner gave me a bout with jungle rot)there wouldn’t have been enough left up there to bother with. The issue is, or perhaps should be, is there body armor, heavy or not, for those troops who want to wear it?

candide, Yes I would welcome Bush’s resignation, at this point. Why? I think Cheney would no be such a panderer to hispanics over immigration, liberals over socialism (welfare, Medicare, etc.) And such a Big Government lacky. He would also push for us to drill our own oil, and tell Jeb to stick it, and allow Natural Gas companies to drill offshore in FL.
That doesn’t mean I would ever elect him, but at this point, W hasn’t done anything we need, or stopped anything we don’t.

In response to the immigration post of Michael J. Laurella, I would like to point out that there is one obvious reason that legal immigration is impossible for many of the low wage immigrants that prop up a substantial sector of our economy. MONEY. My wife is a green card holder and a practicing psychologist. She is a green card holder because we had the means to pay for it. There is fee after fee. And it does not stop there. There is the expense for travel (airline tickets) lodging, rental cars, etc. for multiple trips to various consulates and INS locations. Just getting the K3 visa which is the first step to legally living and working in this country while the green card application is processed. There are multiple medical examinations, bio-metric scans, fingerprints, FBI checks, lawyers fees (and if you don’t have one the process can be a nightmare)etc. Everytime you turn around the government has its hand out. To make a long story short, this process from beginning to end took 3 years and cost us $30,000.00+. This is exactly why those who come here to do menial labor that others will not do come here illegally.
These people are essential to numerous sectors of our economy. Without them many industries would be belly up. The immigration process needs to be simplified. Most would obviously choose to be legal instead of illegal were the means available to them. Instead of ranting about these productive, hardworking people, rant about a government that makes the process too formidable for those of few means to be legal. Simplifying and lowering the cost of the process would be to everyones benefit. Nothing is going to chase these good people back from where they came. Don’t bash these people for seeking opportunity. Bash the government that impedes legality. They are here and they are not going away. And to those of you who wish they would. Be careful what you ask for. This country needs these people whether some of you realize it or not.

That was a very good post ARTC…most if not all people are somewhat xenophobic. I am guilty of this at times as well. I personally did not know that so much money was involved. Knowing that, I can see why a lot are not legal, not because they don’t want to be, but they can not afford to be. I just hate that some illegals buy socials and screw up someone else’s credit.

gadem. The buying of fake SSNs and such is a direct result of not being legal. Once a person has gotten to the point of a K class visa, they can obtain a legal SSN card and legal work permit. There is an endless aray of visa categories that are actually more cumbersome than ours. In fact, ours is probably the easiest because my wife is the spouse of an American citizen. If people could be legal alot of the bad stuff will go away.

The Democrats tactic on this seems to be to act nice and say they would happily give the President the authority he needs if would only ask.
The problem is that President Bush believes he is acting lawfully under Article II of the Constitution. If he were to fall for the latest Democrat trick it would effectively strip the office of the President of any power. Kennedy will lose it once he realizes this strategy isn’t getting anywhere. He also has to be a little careful with Gonzales after his memo that said ‘Miguel Estrada must be stopped because he is Hispanic’ was made public.

I’m just a middle of road American who trys to see all sides of the equation. I need some of you conservatives to explain to me why the President has taken out of the budget today the federal funds for community policing because they say the money was needed for Iraq. I’m all for fighting terrorists but why are we spending billions to protect Iraqis at the expense of fighting crime in America. I’m just confused here and need to understand the reasoning. I’m sure one of you regulars in here understand the reasons for this and could explain it to me so that I understand. Thank you all.

Boy do I long for the days of Nixon and his cronies….in those days you could at least count on Congress to question whether the war was the right thing to do…..oh, and there was this thing called “political discourse”…people with brains and educations (not just money and blackmail fodder) actually discussed factual evidence with decorum rather than resorting to smears and inuendo to win arguments and elections (everyone but Nixon of course) …oh and the Supreme Court had rational, well educated, highly regarded legal minds with publicly known liberal/conservative tendencies based on their public records.
I can only wish for those good ole days. Now I have to be worried about those nasty terrorists coming to attack my American lifestyle - like taking away my life (oh yea, kids in Iraq are getting killed cause they don’t have armor), my freedom (Oops, Patriot Act means my civil liberties are non-existant), my financial well-being and livelihood (hope that budget deficit doesn’t bankrupt us all - I’m not rich enough for tax cuts), my future (wonder if all that money I paid in to Medicare will allow me to get an aspirin when I’m old) and the education of my kids (especially considering the Leave the Poor and Unreligious Children Behind Act).
Yep, even when we had “Peace with Honor” and high gas prices, we didn’t have to worry about those mean ole terrorists taking away our way of life. We just worried about a dishonest, mean-spirited man who would stop at nothing to have his way and was at the beck and call of a select bunch of crooks, right wing conservatives and military wanna-be’s….and when we finally figured out what a crook he was, we took the very serious step of impeaching him so his actions would not bring dishonor on our country, our Constitution and our way of life. Guess there’s not much difference between then and now except America needs to figure out who the “terrorist” really is and throw the bum out.

Monday’s hearing got off to a rocky start when Republicans and Democrats disagreed over whether Gonzales should be sworn in. Democrats said he should, but Specter said it wasn’t necessary. He wasn’t. “My answers would be the same whether I was under oath or not,” Gonzales told the panel.
Apparently, the ritual of swearing to tell the truth is only important if you’re a Democrat being questioned as to the whereabouts of your willy on the night in question. Matters of national security or global interest just don’t merit the gesture.

It USED to be you had to swear to tell the truth when giving testimony. I seem to remember a bunch of patriotic Congressman voting to impeach a sitting President based on a discrepancy of something he said while testifying under oath about his own johnson.

Kimberly - I know exactly what you are saying about swearing in, but if it makes any difference to you: Swearing in is basically a formality reserved for “hostile” or disliked people appearing before the Congress. Even old Specter said he didn’t ask Gonzo to swear in out of respect.
They can do that, because it is “illegal” to lie to Congress whether you are sworn in or not. Bill had to swear in because they had little respect for him.

I’m not sure I see anything that brought on that 4:12 rant. I tend to share your distrust of Government, but I see nothing wrong with pointing out that same laws that apply to me should have applied to Clinton. He really did try to use the defense that it didn’t apply to him, you can even look it up.
If it was about Cheney meeting with people to form the basis of his recommendation then I’m only pointing out that it’s ultimately up to Congress to write the finished product.

Dusty’s got a point there, Brian. Bush’s DUI records mysteriously disappeared, as did his military medical records indicating just why he refused to take his phyicals back in the 70s. While they DID manage to put SOMETHING back into the files that claimed he actually showed up in Alabama, there is virtually no tangible outside evidence to back that up. So when Dusty says “there’s nothing in his record” she’s actually almost right.
Oh, but I don’t think you’re a traitor. Monkeys who can’t have a meaningful discussion fling feces at those who can. Try not to let Dusty’s feces hurt your feelings. {;->

It’s not slander if it’s true, Dusty. You fail the basic American test: standing up for our freedoms no matter what. Fear is nothing to be ashamed of—just admit it. Mike’s nailed it. There is literally no provision in our legal system and Constitution that would ever, under ANY circumstances, allow the President to ignore the law. It’s not an option.
Not even if he believes with all his heart that he DOES have that power. Not in a time of war. Not as commander in chief. He can not, must not, in a box; he can not, must not, even on FOX. Zip. Zero. Zilch.
The President is not allowed to circumvent or ignore the law, despite his repeated (illegal) comments about reserving the right to do so… including his ridiculous “signing statement” about the torture bill. Our system simply doesn’t work that way, no matter how hard Bush tries to pretend otherwise.

The “left� in this country is beginning to see that hate of the president is not a plan to defend the nation. Let’s see how this wire tapping thing turns out, or pounce and scare people (oops, they would have you believe that only republicrats scare people for political gain). Well, that’s not fair; they can also socially engineer some good government dependents to solidify their power in Washington DC.
So now we have the Commander in Chief using software to weed out extraneous calls and humans to verify or contradict the veracity of overseas calls (this is an early understanding) into the US. So, the “left� being nothing but socialist social engineers in disguise criticize like they do and then say; Mr. President, if you want to do it, just ask us, we will make the law to give you that power. We just want oversight of your powers and I say that is fair. But, what the hate has prevented them from seeing is if they write a law, it will make our spying programs transparent to the enemy and they will adjust tactics accordingly. The nature of this warfare requires that the American public not know absolutely everything the government is doing to capture the people who want to kill my children.
But, these are the same people who think warfare follows plans more detailed than the one Bush and the Joint Chiefs of Staff laid out, to bring peace to Iraq, you know all of those benchmark elections and provisional authorities?
