EARNINGS: Troubled GM loses billions

Wagoner said the company is moving forward with its turnaround plans, including a restructuring that will cut 30,000 jobs and shutter 12 facilities by 2008 and a plan to cut structural costs by $4 billion this year, ———->largely through a health care agreement with the United Auto Workers<——— and manufacturing improvements.

Well today we’re back to the domestic spying thing. (Yawn!) If anybody is REALLY worried about being spied on you may find the following useful or amusing. I have a lot of overseas friends with whom I share e-mail and we play a little game. I took a high-res photo of my hairy-arse which I saved under the file name, “Osama”. I warned my friends not to open this file unless they wanted a big surprise and now attach it to all my overseas e-mails. It always gives me a warm feeling to know that at any point during the day, I am probably “showing my arse” to the tireless and dedicated workers at the NSA. Citizens still have the power to civilly disobey (within the letter of the law) those policies of governments that they find onerous and unsupportable if they would only engage that small amount of gray matter between their ears. Big brother only “thinks” he has ultimate authority

PS- I now have 173 friends in my network (that I know of) who are “showing their arse”, as well. Join us and YOU could make the world a more decent place, too! SHOW YOUR ARSE!!!

Bush and company are so busy invading Iraq, eavesdropping on domestic phone calls, fighting porn, and now collecting Americans web surfing habits, Osama is sitting back, making videos and probably playing computer games. The idiot Bush can’t even be bothered to track down the man who killed over 3000 Americans. What a disgrace.

Mr. Ramani’s five-page letter mentioned privacy only once, at the bottom of the fourth page, and then primarily in the context of perception rather than reality.

“Google’s acceding to the request would suggest that it is willing to reveal information about those who use its services,” he wrote. “This is not a perception that Google can accept.”

Even Google’s allies are shying away from legal arguments based on privacy. The American Civil Liberties Union, for instance, said it planned to file papers supporting Google. But not on privacy grounds. “We will probably not be making that argument,” said Aden J. Fine, a lawyer with the civil liberties union.

If the New York Times and the ACLU say this isn’t a privacy issue, why would the scribbler want to lie about it?

Now Mothra wants Hillary to surrender. Does this guy ever think in terms of winning?

Murtha also weighed in on other topics during the meeting, saying the United States should use diplomacy in combating the threats Iran poses to Mideast stability. He also said Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., could win the Democratic nomination for president in 2008, but that she would lose in the general election.

By Wilma Lamb

January 27, 2006 11:39 AM | Link to this

Don’t knock Murtha’s Hillary comment, it,s right on the money. The Republicans will do the same thing to Hillary in 08 that they did to Kerry in 04, register as Democrats in the early primaries so she will get the nomination and then pull out every dirty trick they can to beat her. Or since they have Diebold voting machines in key swing states they can just beat her in a “fair?” election sickofsleaze

By RW-(the original)

January 27, 2006 11:50 AM | Link to this

Wilma Lamb,

A few points here. I agree with Murthas statement about Hillary, but your reasons are a little silly. In the 2008 primaries, Republicans will have their own slate of candidates and aren’t going to forfeit the right to pick their own candidate by voting in the Democrat primaries. Blaming Diebold is just denial. Speaking of dirty tricks, why won’t Kerry sign standard form 180?

“This is not acceptable,” festival head Eman Hamouri told reporters at the time, accusing Hamas of trying to force its values on others. “We condemn this and we have sought the help of the Palestinian parliament to discuss this serious issue.”

In response to the incident, al-Zahar told WND: “I hardly understand the point of view of the West concerning these issues. The West brought all this freedom to its people but it is that freedom that has brought about the death of morality in the West. It’s what led to phenomena like homosexuality, homeless and AIDS.”

ML, is this toon supposed to have Americans fear our own government. Have you decided that Homeland Security is wasting their time and spying on internet pervs? Are we all supposed to believe your ruling in the court of public opinion? ML, if I may dedicate some lyrics to you sir;

Every twenty seconds got me peepin out my window Investigatin the joint for traps Checkin my telephone for taps I’m starin at the woman on the corner It’s f^ked up when your mind is playin tricks on ya*”-the Ghetto Boys

ML, there are people out there trying to kill all of us and the left wants to fight them extra nice. Funny, in my lesser than respectable days, I saw many kids try to maitain the higher ground in fights and they all got stomped. Is that the left’s plan for this war, or do they want us to retreat behind our borders let the terrorist plot and scheme while we whack moles and prosecute them? I would argue that we must enforce UN resolutions if they will not, and show the people of the Middle-East that not all styles of freedom have to be as perverse as America’s.

ML, UBL better be dead when we get him or you will see new terrorist coming out of the wood work to obtain his freedom.

Now it has come to the point Iran is pursuing nuclear weapons and developing them in underground facilities, yes. Fortunately, no thanks to the left, we have temporary bases w/troops next door. You know, it would be nice if Israel got its hands on some sort of bomb that could penetrate the earth and eliminate Iran’s program. Turns out the Chicken Hawk wanted something like that, but of course the America protecting media would never let that happen.

We just don’t seem to be able to turn the corner even on researching what’s doable with new kinds of weapons. Bumper stickers aren’t going to accomplish some of the missions this country is going to face.”

Why don’t you doodle up a little toon about that ML? That is, if you want to get the people stirred up over a threat that doesn’t have a sunset clause.

Don’t bother, Voice. The neocon tools here are lost in a blind panic, and they’re mooing for Bush to keep them safe ‘by any means necessary.’

Even if it means trampling the Constitution? “Heck yeah; in fact, especially if it means that! We have too many freedoms anyway, and we have to give them up for the government to keep us safe!”

This is why fear remains a powerful neocon tool—and why the successfully terrorized folks will react with outrage if you dare try to point out how they’re being used.

Osama did not attack US soil before 9-11 either. And the result of the invasion was to take out a secular dictator and install a fundementalist Islamic democracy. Chances are that will not hold together much longer anyway, there will be civil was in that country for years. Where is the progress?

interesting stat, completely wrong however.

assuming 25mil population, 30k killed over 3 years, that would be a rate of 0.04%

In the US we have a rate of 5.5 per 100k, so that would be 0.0055%.

So the death rate is actually about 8 times that of the US.

Voice of Reason, I concur with your assessment of the domestic boondoggle the current Republicans have gotten us into in regards to the Medicare prescription drug coverage and the budget. The Republicans have developed a Democrat-on-crack spending habit and should all be ashamed that they have strayed so far from the fiscal discipline that has long been the hallmark of the GOP.

I disagree with you on the tax cuts - tax cuts have always been beneficial to the economy; the problem is spending, not revenue (tax revenue has risen as a result of the tax cuts).

We have so many turn around liberals.

They make one statement. The next post claims they didn’t say that.

The war in Iraq was not necessary because Sadaam was not Osama. But their representatives in Congress voted FOR war.

They want those “criminal-like” rich people to pay higher taxes. Yet they nominate and elect only rich people for Demo posts.

They know this country had a great and expensive NATURAL disaster. They know the war they voted for is expensive. But Republicans alone have wrecked the budget.

Democrats are delaying every motion and movement in Congress. But it is the fault of Republicans simply because Republicans elected a Republican president.

And we are supposed to listen to the ineffectual whining of liberals?

Molly ivins:

“What would happen if we had not a political, but a pragmatic debate about all of this: We have made a horrible mess of this entire war on terrorism, now how do we fix it? What do we do? I realize it’s a bit simplistic of me after all this time, but I really think one of the best things we could do for ourselves is deal honestly with the facts. Because we have made a mess of this does not mean we are a pitiful, helpless giant — the United States still has more sheer military power than anyone else on earth. But using it is not necessarily the best way to get the results we want.”

Dusty, a South Park conservative is one that is freed from the traditional stodginess with which conservatives had been associated (think Judge Smails in Caddyshack)

A South Park conservative is much more libertarian - they enjoy and engage in bawdy humor as a matter of course (without decrying it as destructive to “family values”), while at the same time remaining fiscally conservative. The genesis of the term comes from the show South Park, whose creators, through the show, espouse essentially libertarian ideas while skewering pols on both sides of the aisle (but particularly goring “progressives”) all the time putting out some of the most offensive material to ever be broadcast on non-premium cable.

Hope that helps!

RE,

Trying to change the Middle East for the good of the World was certain to increase terror attacks in the short term. Things like Spain backing down as soon as they were attacked ensured more attacks. Watching people voting in free elections were bound to increase terror attacks in the short term.

The long term solution is to show them the only thing they respect, which is best summed up by Toby Keith. A boot up their a-ss will get their attention.

Surrender ensures more terror attacks in the long term.

A USA TODAY/CNN/Gallup Poll taken last weekend and interviews across the country this week found most Americans pessimistic about the economy, divided on the war and doubtful that Bush has the best plan to address the issues that matter most to them — among them health care and corruption.

By more than 2-to-1, those surveyed say things have gotten worse in the United States over the past five years.

…. even conservatives divide 47%-44% on whether things have gotten better or worse.

The country’s downbeat mood poses a challenge for the president as he tries to command support for the legislative agenda he’ll unveil for his sixth year in office. With a 43% approval rating, he is in “a weakened position trying to convince Congress to do whatever it is in the State of the Union that he wants them to do,” says Charles Franklin of the University of Wisconsin.

• Said the country has gotten off track. By 62%-35%, they were dissatisfied with the way things are going in the USA. That’s the most pessimistic view at the start of a year since Bush took office.

• Questioned Bush’s leadership. By 64%-34%, they said Bush didn’t have a clear plan for solving the country’s problems. The president received his strongest approval rating, 52%, on fighting terrorism. But on health care — ranked as an issue equal to the economy — congressional Democrats were more trusted, 54%-35%.

RE,

We go through the same discussions every day so any resemblance to dancing around this issue should be seen as new and exciting. If you want the same answers to the same questions just go read a different thread.

A true democracy does tend to make a country much more peaceful, but that doesn’t begin until they have had usually many years of practice, it’s people need to have some economic freedom, there needs to be property rights, and most importantly they need to go through a few elections that result in a peaceful transferance of power.

Nobody has said, have an election and everything is wine and roses from day one.

Now I know where RE gets his ideas from:

“Perhaps Prof. Liu put it best, of the Berkeley law school, when he wrote this: He said, Judge Alito’s record envisions an America where police may shoot and kill an unarmed boy to stop him from running away with a stolen purse; where federal agents point guns at ordinary citizens during a raid, even after no sign of resistance; where the FBI may install a camera where you sleep on the promise that they won’t turn it on unless the informant is in the room; where a black man may be sentenced to death by an all-white jury for killing a white man absent any kind of multiple regression analysis or other analysis of potential discrimination; and where police may search—I paraphrased that last sentence; it reads precisely ‘absent a multiple regression analysis showing discrimination’—and where police may search what a warrant, may search and define what a warrant permits and then some. This is not the America we know, he says, nor is it the America we aspire to be.”—John Kerry* Jan. 27, 2006*

DAVOS, Switzerland (FORTUNE) - Be afraid. Be very afraid.

That’s the message from two of the world’s most successful investors on the topic of high oil prices. One of them, Hermitage Capital’s Bill Browder, has outlined six scenarios that could take oil up to a downright terrifying $262 a barrel. Investor George Soros says Iran is heading for a confrontation with the West.

Billionaire investor George Soros, wouldn’t make any specific predictions about prices. But as a legendary commodities player, it’s worth paying heed to the words of the man who once took on the Bank of England — and won. “I’m very worried about the supply-demand balance, which is very tight,” Soros says.

“U.S. power and influence has declined precipitously because of Iraq and the war on terror and that creates an incentive for anyone who wants to make trouble to go ahead and make it.” As an example, Soros pointed to the regime in Iran, which is heading towards a confrontation with the West over its nuclear power program and doesn’t show any signs of compromising. “Iran is on a collision course and I have a difficulty seeing how such a collision can be avoided,” he says.

Today’s New York Times carries the results of a poll on the kerfuffle over surveillance of terrorists. According to the Times, the poll finds that “public opinion about the trade-offs between national security and individual rights is nuanced and remains highly unresolved.” Translated into English, this means that the public is on the opposite side of the issue from the Times.

Answer: 68% are willing, just 29% not willing—and by the way, the number who are willing is up, from 63% in 2003 and 56% in 2005. It’s possible that by revealing the surveillance program, the Times succeeded in both damaging national security and diminishing public support for “civil liberties.”

Andy, here is another poll for you: A new Zogby poll indicates a majority of Americans want Congress to consider impeaching President Bush if he wiretapped American citizens without a judge’s approval.

Respondents were asked if they agreed or disagreed with the following statement:

“If President Bush wiretapped American citizens without the approval of a judge, do you agree or disagree that Congress should consider holding him accountable through impeachment.”

The poll found that 52 percent agreed, 43 percent disagreed and 6 percent said they didn’t know or declined to answer.

“The American people are not buying Bush’s outrageous claim that he has the power to wiretap American citizens without a warrant,” said Bob Fertik, co-founder of the left-leaning group AfterDowningStreet.org which commissioned the survey. “Americans believe terrorism can be fought without turning our own government into Big Brother.”

The poll interviewed 1,216 adults in the U.S. from Jan. 9-12, and has a 2.9 percent margin of error.

As one might expect, the respondents’ political affiliation played a role in their answer, as 66 percent of Democrats favored impeachment, as did 59 percent of Independents, but only 23 percent of Republicans.

One month ago, one-third of Americans polled by Rasmussen Reports said they believe Bush should be impeached

Luckovich demonstrates his utter ignorance again. None of the data requested of Google by the government was personally identifiable. It was simply a text string of terms searched for and the results they produced.

Luckovich is like most liberals in that he is too lazy to gather any fact before he starts his mindless criticism.

Frankly, if any of you great supporters of privacy were sincere in your concerns, you would be going after Google itself. We are all much more likely to have our privacy invaded by individuals and companies researching us through google than we are to be the subject of a government survellience. But liberals really don’t care about privacy any more than they care about expanding presidential authority, the Patriot Act, unlateralism or any of thier other excuses for their lame partisan attacks. They just see another excuse to criticize an adminstration they have hated prior to its election.

It figures, I’m dealing with a lightweight, a hysterical one at that.

The Attorney General compromises the Justice Department, specifically- the Attorney General was to be “learned in the law with the duty “to prosecute and conduct all suits in the Supreme Court in which the United States shall be concerned, and to give his advice and opinion upon questions of law when required by the President of the United States in other words a member of the Judiciary.

It should have been easy for you when I tipped Bill Clinton’s use of Jamie Gorelick to review the legality of his surveillance activities. You must not be capable of complex reasoning. Do you get all your ideas from Michael Moore? Why am I discussing this with you and not him? Wouldn’t it save time?

Also, if you would happen to read a little further into your own link you would see that the Department of Justice is “an executive department of the government of the United States with the Attorney General as its head, or in other words, the Executive Branch. Press conference yesterday:

“THE PRESIDENT: May I — if I might, you said that I have to circumvent it. There — wait a minute. That’s a — there’s something — it’s like saying, you know, you’re breaking the law. I’m not. See, that’s what you’ve got to understand. I am upholding my duty, and at the same time, doing so under the law and with the Constitution behind me. That’s just very important for you to understand.

Secondly, the FISA law was written in 1978. We’re having this discussion in 2006. It’s a different world. And FISA is still an important tool. It’s an important tool. And we still use that tool. But also — and we — look — I said, look, is it possible to conduct this program under the old law? And people said, it doesn’t work in order to be able to do the job we expect us to do.

And so that’s why I made the decision I made. And you know, “circumventing” is a loaded word, and I refuse to accept it, because I believe what I’m doing is legally right. “

Just out of curiosity, if you wanted to do something but it was not allowed by the laws on the books, and then you did it anyway… what would you be.

Sen. George Allen (R.-Va.), who like John F’n Kerry is frequently mentioned as presidential candidate in 2008, ripped his Democratic colleague for making the suggestion (for a filibuster)—from Davos, Switzerland, nonetheless.

“Well, hearing this news today, Senator Kerry must be feeling lucky because he wants to make my day. If Senate Democrats follow his advice, then I say we must pull the trigger on the Constitutional option. Senators should vote on this nomination and not hide behind partisan political processes to deny this exemplary nominee the fairness of a vote. Senators can vote ‘yes’ or vote ‘no’, but it is our responsibility to vote, said Allen.

RE,

Are you invested in ruining everyone’s weekend?

The bottom line is still that the President believes he has inherent power to do what he is doing in the Constitution. He also discusses how the FISA act comes into play in some cases. WE DON”T KNOW WHO IS RIGHT, YET!!!!!!

I can tell without a shadow of a doubt that the FISA law doesn’t trump the Constitution. What do you have against letting the system work?

I’ll have a piece on another of your twisted polls on my blog in about 10 minutes. I’m sure you can pour through it and find all sorts of meaningless tripe to somehow support your conclusions.

The FISA law and the 4th admendment seem to suggest what he did was illegal. The 4th is pretty clear and direct, the FISA is much more complicated, but also outlines how to proceed. These two provisions were clearly not followed. The only support for his action’s legality is a very liberal and broad reading of his responsibility as president, a reading of which the FISA law was enacted to curtail.

RE,

It doesn’t matter how much you spew the same thing over and over, it is being looked at and we will find out. Republican lawmakers say that ties between Rep. John Murtha (D-Pa.) and his brother’s lobbying firm, KSA Consulting, may warrant investigation by the House ethics committee…

According to a June 13 article in The Los Angeles Times, the fiscal 2005 defense appropriations bill included more than $20 million in funding for at least 10 companies for whom KSA lobbied. Carmen Scialabba, a longtime Murtha aide, works at KSA as well. KSA directly lobbied Murtha’s office on behalf of seven companies, and a Murtha aide told a defense contractor that it should retain KSA to represent it, according to the LA Times.

In early 2004, Murtha reportedly leaned on U.S. Navy officials to sign a contract to transfer the Hunters Point Shipyard to the city of San Francisco, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. A company called Lennar Inc. had right to the land, and Laurence Pelosi, nephew to House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), was an executive with the firm at that time.

Murtha also inserted earmarks in defense bills that steered millions of dollars in federal research funds toward companies owned by children of fellow Pennsylvania Rep. Paul Kanjorski (D).

Cindy Sheehan to Dianne Feinstein: Fillibuster Alito or I’ll Challenge Your Senate Seat

Caracas, Venezuela - Gold star mother Cindy Sheehan has decided to run against California Senator Diane Feinstein if Feinstein does not filibuster the Supreme Court nomination of Judge Samuel Alito. While in Venezuela attending the World Social Forum, Sheehan learned that several Democratic Senators had announced their plans for a filibuster but that Senator Feinstein, who’s up for re-election in November, had stated she would vote against the nomination but not filibuster it. “I’m appalled that Diane Feinstein wouldn’t recognize how dangerous Alito’s nomination is to upholding the values of our constitution and restricting the usurpation of presidential powers, for which I’ve already paid the ultimate price, Sheehan said.
