Well! We’re number two! Posted here hours after making it onto the washpost website. Thanks, Mike.

This IS pretty funny, in a bipartisan, secular sort of way!

Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, Nevada Democrat, railed against what he called the president’s “failed economic agenda that has left millions of American families with higher bills and lower wages to pay them.”

Why would Reid care when he has all that Abramoff cash in his pockets, that he ain’t givin back?

Another good one, ML. Referring to an earlier post by SIMON, of course he was correct in his short list of Bush, Robertson, Falwell, Buchanan, etc. Of course they are all in the same “boat.” They are the very essence of the Republican party. Their every word and historical actions speak precisely to/for the hatred, bitterness, jealousy, and resentment that permeate that group. Reasonably well-adjusted people who are content with their lives, possess positive ideas, rest easy within themselves, do NOT cast their lot with the angry hatemongers in our midst. The HATE vote has ALWAYS gone to the Repubs. Learned that decades ago as a member of that sordid group. Deeply dysfunctional people are drawn to the Repubs like a moth to the flame. No Repub can EVER win a face-to-face debate w a knowledgeable person. They grow angry, belligerent, and run away. This is not opinion, but rather inarguable fact, history, and truth. Period.

There used to be a time when newspapers would use the terms “alleged” and “suspected” to describe a person who had been charged with a crime but had not yet been given a fair trial. This was because of respect for our criminal justice system, innocent until proven guilty and all that, but was also used to keep a newsman from getting sued. There is something inherently corrupt and immoral about trying to influence the outcome of a judicial proceeding, whether you lie to the judge or create a false perception of guilt.

None of this bothers Cynthia Tucker, in even the least bit, as she gleefully appoints herself judge and jury handing down the convictions of uncharged Republicans and acquitting Democrats of the very same crime. Never mind that no one except Jack Abramoff knows who will be charged, Queen Lib doesn’t need details such as these, it’s time to burn some Republicans at the stake.

And all this while cloaking herself in an air of morality?

For one hundred years of more stupid Americans have been sending money to charlatans like Pat Robertson and Herbert W. Armstrong. Why? Guilt, I suppose. When will these stupid Americans understand they are being conned by Christianity?

Yes, Western Civilization has been hoodwinked by ancient semitic superstition for two thousand years or more, but at least in Europe they have come to see this. In America we are still in the dark Christian centuries.

“The vice president is experiencing a recurrence of a pre-existing foot condition,” said Jennifer Mayfield, a spokeswoman for the vice president.

Mayfield described the injury as an old war injury, “Dick suffered the injury while dodging the draft during the Viet Nam war. It was a close call but he got out of the way.”

This week Commander in Chief, President Bush also suffered a war injury, a small scrape. Bush is expected to be recovered enough to present Cheney with a Purple Heart later next week. Doctors are expected to remove Bush’s band-aid on Monday.

DU requires zero degree of intellectual ability or honesty, as the most outlandish, absurd and paranoid “progressive” delusions are given full faith and credit in an unquestioned manner.

I don’t know that there are any equivalent conservative sites that have similar membership practices, but if there are, the same criticism applies to them.

There is no proof whatsoever that any living Jew was ever gassed or burned in Nazi Germany or in any of the territories that Nazi Germany occupied during World War II. The holocaust propaganda was started by the Zionist Jews in order to acquire worldwide sympathy for the creation of Israel after World War II. RW, OO, BigDaddy loathes lurking little punks. The are intellectual cheap shotters who are too cowardly to try to actually prove a point. All they do is lie in wait for their one opportunity a day to try to demonstrate that they know their way out of thier spider hole. And they suck…

What I have to say is, if you’re doing a drive-by, present an opinion without taking shots, because taking shots necessitates a response. Those who take cheap shots and then run are intellectual cowards. Those that take cheap shots without ever presenting an argument are even lower than intellectual cowards. They are punk maggots who deserve nothing but derision…

A Libertatian needs to learn some manners.

Here’s a link to Lucianne. It’s news and editorial links are sharp, but it’s comments make Pat Buchanan’s essays look communist. The woman who runs it is Lucianne Goldberg, a New York literary type. Her claim to fame is that she told Linda Tripp to persuade Monica Lewinski to keep that infamous blue dress in a plastic bag because it was evidence. I guess if you have to be famous for something…

And if you’re drunk, and you want to read ill-informed liberals and brain impared conservatives flame eachother, and maybe even throw in a bomb of your own, there’s the Huffington Post. Apparently, this site will let ANYONE comment!

The Repbublicans are not the only ones with a messy house. Here’s a local news release: South Sound briefs

SHELTON

Cluttered home killed woman, police claim

A Shelton woman found dead in her home beneath a pile of debris was a victim of her own clutter, authorities said Friday.

Marie Rose, 59, first was reported missing early Thursday by her husband. Police searched the couple’s home in the 1600 block of Second Avenue about 2:30 a.m. and did not find her. They searched again about 10 hours later and discovered her body under 4 feet of debris.

“It’s the first time I’ve heard of it in 25 years,” Shelton police Lt. Dave Eklund said.

An autopsy was performed Friday.

The couple’s home was crammed with piles of old clothing and shoes, boxes, laundry hampers and bulk purchases of products such as hand cleanser. A narrow walkway cut through the piles, stacked 6 feet high in some places, police said.

Rose may have been reaching to repair a phone jack in the bedroom when she displaced a pile, Eklund said.

“Accidentally, it tipped over on top of her and buried her and she died of asphyxiation and compression of the chest,” Eklund said.

Rose did not like to throw out things and made a lot of bulk purchases. She was small, weighing 100 pounds, and had health problems, which hampered her ability to climb free, he said.

RW, Darn, I hadn’t heard that one before. Didn’t realize it was common. I thought it was strange that the police had to search the house twice before they found her. I guess they weren’t anxious to move all that junk. Yeah, the eagle had duck for dinner. I must have interrupted his meal because I found a carcass on my dock and went to get some stuff to clean it up. It was gone when I came back. Stupid ducks hide under the dock but don’t have the sense to stay there.

There used to be a time when newspapers would use the terms “alleged and “suspected to describe a person who had been charged with a crime but had not yet been given a fair trial.

A fine example of the open, honest reporting found in pinko media like the Chicago Tribune:

Shoemaker said it was because at the time of the 2004 hearings, the tribes that gave Durbin most of that money said they had a dozen law firms representing their interests, the one Abramoff worked for being just one. The tribes were the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe in Michigan and Agua Caliente Band of the Cahailla Indians in California.

It wasn’t clear at the time that the money Durbin received from the Indians — $8,000 — had anything to do with Abramoff. It still isn’t, said Shoemaker.

The $3,000 balance came from someone at the Greenberg Traurig law firm at the time Abramoff worked there, Shoemaker said.

“Why, this money came from the United States Treasury, not Jack Abramoff. See, it says it right here on the front.”

Big Dig. Done.

(Well, almost)

By Mac Daniel, Globe Staff | January 8, 2006

By the end of the month, after more than 14 years and $14.6 billion, barriers will disappear, variable message signs will switch off, and a two-lane slab of suspended concrete connecting the Interstate 93 south tunnel with Albany Street will open, marking the end of major road construction for the Big Dig.

With that debut—which will pass without ceremony—substantial completion of the project will be achieved, and the Big Dig, part of our lives for so long, will begin its wind-down.

More than a year of cleanup and detail work will follow: Workers will put in curbs and sidewalks and install utilities; they will plant 1,000 trees and complete the parkland along the Rose Kennedy Greenway. But by Jan. 31 all the project’s roads and bridges will be in place, and Boston drivers can begin getting acquainted with the finished project.

Not that this is any surprise but Diane Feinstein said this morning that she was prepared to filibuster Alito. He hasn’t even testified yet. I bet you can’t guess what issue she has with him. You got it, abortion. But the left says they have no litmus test. Shouldn’t we judge Supreme Court nominees on their merit? Thats what happened with Ginsburg. And I guarantee that Alito isn’t as far right as Ginsburg is left.

RLUIPA ACT - Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act signed into law by Bill Clinton, 1991 I believe. A well intended act with unintended consequences.

It has had me involved in a two-year zoning battle which is now going to court. Fortunately, my “corrupt” politician friend has supported my efforts, but now the suit is filed against the Board of Commissioners, and my community may end up the loser.

Research it and imagine the complications it may bring mostly in the land use aspect. But if you enjoy posing questions to yourself, you may want to ask “Why has the ACLU not questioned this separation of church & state in federal penetentiaries (spelling). Not that I think they should, but it does seem to apply double standard.

There’s a new poll on how Americans feel about warrantless wiretaps.

It’s from the AP

56 percent of respondents in an AP-Ipsos poll said the government should be required to first get a court warrant to eavesdrop on the overseas calls and e-mails of U.S. citizens when those communications are believed to be tied to terrorism.

I’ll wager the different conclusions being reached by surveys on this issue have lots to do with the questions being asked.

OO, the RLUIPA story is interesting. More, please.

Ricky, Feinstein is an opportunist. Well being, but an opportunist anyway. Give Alito his day(s) on the Hill and THEN talk filibuster.

RW, I remember when Chicago’s Midway was bucolic. 5 minutes from gate to luggage, 5 minutes to rentacar counter, 5 minute walk to car. No more. It aspires to be LaGuardia. Trouble is, the runways are so short, planes end up in streets.

RW: Thanks for the link to Ms. Schmidt’s page. It was an honor to fatten the coffers of the “Schmidt For Congress Committee.” I, for one, feel that we need more brave voices like Ms. Schmidt, who was willing to stand up against the thuggery of the democratic caucus and give voice to a proud soldier who is actually serving this country, not some old toadie to the anti war movement like Murtha. And having to live through the national embarrassment of being shouted down by the anti American crowd in the halls of Congress, by those who wish to silence the beliefs of our brave soldiers. I hope my small contribution reminds Ms. Schmidt that there are good people in the United States, not just hysterical pervert traitors.

Then we have the unfortunate innocents of Iraq. I have heard reports of up to as many as 200 of them killed yesterday. So if 200 were reported, one has to really wonder what the true count was. Bill O’Reilly and George Bush define a terrorist as someone who “kills innocent men, women and children.” Am I the only one who sees the irony and stunning hypocrisy in this statement?” Who do Bill and George think are being killed in Iraq? Well-trained and an organized Army? Terrorists? We all know that is false. This is who is being killed in Iraq: living breathing human beings, identical to Americans, or any other human beings on earth, who are just trying to go about their lives trying to survive in a war torn country that was no threat to America or our way of life.

Demographics used in “finch’s” AP poll.

AnkleBitingPundits did the heavy lifting to examine the inputs for this AP-Ipsos poll. Only 81% of respondents were eligible to vote, with no indication whether even those were registered and did vote in the last election. Respondents were 52-40 percent Democrats over Republicans, even though in the last election the split was 37 each (the rest being unaffiliated or third party).

Every single one of the following crosstabs from the poll are wrong, and in every instance the error favors the Democrat responses. Each is compared to actual voters in 2004. Religion: 19% said they had “none, versus 10% in 2004. Age: 31% were 18-34, versus 17% for 18-29 (closest available data). Income: 15% under $15,000, versus 8%.

Marriage: 56% married, versus 63%. Geography: 17% rural, versus 25%. Race: 71% white and 12% Hispanic, versus 77% and 8%. (Remainder were black, and other.)

The nerve of me to point this out, simply because I didn’t like the results. You would think I could at least point out some fact.

This whole sordid Abramoff affair is starting to become the perfect little microcosm of American politics: When Republicans are questioned about their involvement, they do the honorable thing; resign their positions or step down from their posts. When a democrat is confronted with evidence they immediately start to dissemble and lie like 3 year old children- Why, I have no idea how that great big wad of cash got into my pocket. The dog must have put it there. And of course the pinko media is perfectly cool with whatever excuse comes their way, as long as it wasn’t from the mouth of a Conservative; Oh Mr. Reid, that sucks, I hate when that happens. Delay is going down, down I tell you!

It’s just further proof of how hopeless and benign the pinkos in America have become. Their only hope is that the Republicans do something wrong and that they don’t get caught up in it too.

Hypocrisy-n. pl. hy·poc·ri·sies- The practice of professing beliefs, feelings, or virtues that one does not hold or possess; falseness.

Durbin has declaimed his desire to look into the state of our “individual rights and liberties.” No agency of the federal government has more power to infringe on our rights and liberties than the IRS. Surely Durbin should be held accountable for suppressing this report. There are no legitimate grounds for not publicizing it in its entirety. The reports of every other Independent Counsel have been published in full, save for brief sections containing classified materials. Gutting a report of 120 pages of detailed government wrongdoing goes too far. Are Safire’s investigative reporters ready to pounce? Will Frist and Hastert rise to their responsibilities? It is not clear how many (if any) solons will wind up in jail because of their friendship with Abramoff. Bribery is very hard to prove. Congressman Ney, identified in Abramoff’s indictment as “Representative #1,” says he was duped into performing favors for Abramoff’s clients. “Members of Congress are constantly raising and receiving money all the time, and they also perform official acts,” says Ney’s lawyer, Mark Tuohey.

“Tom DeLay is not concerned that Mr. Abramoff is cooperating. He urges everyone involved to cooperate in the investigation and to tell the truth.” Most of the influence peddling on Capitol Hill is perfectly legal: money funneled through charitable foundations or political-action committees.

RW, thanks for the stuff on the AP-Ipsos poll. Interesting. Seems it was more than just the phrasing of questions that influenced results. Looking at the breakdown though, it appears the poll was of citizens overall, and wasn’t weighted toward voters. I wouldn’t say this makes the poll statistically flawed, but it does pose some questions.

Since voters elect the officials who set policy, it’s arguable that the opinions of non-voters in such surveys shouldn’t be counted at all, or at least given less substance.

Which leads one to conclude that if (hypothetically speaking, of course) a majority of Americans oppose wiretaps, Bush, the Iraq war, etc., but don’t bother to vote, then what the HELL are they b!tch!ng about?

Furthermore, I’ve barked here repeatedly that the reason there are so few conservative newspapers in the US is because libs buy papers but cons don’t.

But all sorts of studies conclude that while libs read papers, they don’t vote. Cons, on the other hand, do vote, and probably don’t care that their fingers arent ink stained.

Bottom line is, it doesn’t matter who wins the arguments, it’s who wins the elections.

finch,

My questions would be A) Why are news services creating their own news by doing polls? and B) What moonbat crystal ball do they use to decide they should over sample Democrats or people that are more likely to side with the Democrat position?

I’m guessing they use the same absurd theory you are using to determine that there are news reading hoards of Democrats just waiting to be led to the polls. Maybe the paper could print a map, but they will have to print it in the gossip section and claim the latest “Benifer” will be there signing autographs.

And, btw (or by the way in case BigDaddy is around) when I say “absurd theories” it means the same thing as you saying “all sorts of studies.”

Having said all that, I hope Democrats continue to operate under this false premise instead of coming to their senses. I wonder how many more elections they will claim were stolen, before they realize nobody is listening?

RW, the AP story on the poll I linked to was in the Savannah Morning News, which said nothing about polling voters, so in that sense the story didn’t misrepresent the poll, which (according to the links you provided) never misrepresented its sampling base.

The “ankle biting” link you provided is a bit disingenuous in that respect, since given its parameters, the poll neither oversampled Democrats nor undersampled voters.

Chasing and citing poll numbers is a bipartisan obsession, too. You can’t hang that on liberals, since the WSJ and Forbes, among others, can get just as survey happy. That doesn’t make it right, but they do.

That being said, I can see why you hope Democrats “never come to their senses”. If I were in your shoes, I’d be hoping the same thing.

But back on topic. You’re right about lobbyists. Some may be odious, but it’s constituionally protected activity. It’s the lawmakers who have to be reined in.

Most people could probably agree that most polls are not a good litmus (hate that term but it applies) test of American opinion. It’s funny how on a poll if the #s change all of a sudden, say +/-6%, when the margin for error is +/-4%, can cause the the media to go off the deep end.

In your link it says the law is unconstitutional and the post is almost three years old. If there is a Supreme Court challenge ahead, one that is already working it’s way through the courts, maybe we could write to Senate members now with the Supreme Court in the spotlight.

I am pretty certain that a case has not gotten to the Supreme Court yet. The kicker is that a group called The Becket Fund argues these cases for the church, if the County loses, they are responsible for paying, not only their own legal expenses (my tax dollars), but the church’s legal expenses as well (my tax dollars). That money goes back into The Becket Fund so that they can take another case to court in the future. I’m paying to undermine my own property rights.

Now, let’s bring Dean’s assertions to their logical conclusion:

DEAN: Senator Byron Dorgan and some others took money from Indian tribes. They’re not agents of Jack Abramoff. There’s no evidence that I’ve seen that Jack Abramoff directed any contributions to Democrats.

Dean asserts that dems took money from Indian tribes, Republicans took it from Abramoff.

Jack Abramoff, the once-powerful lobbyist at the center of a wide-ranging public corruption investigation, pleaded guilty yesterday to fraud, tax evasion and conspiracy to bribe public officials

Jack Abramoff also took money directly from the Indian tribes. This money was used to try and influence congress in favor of the tribes, relating to casinos, etc.

What Dean has done, in his typical fit of stupidity and ignorance, is cut out the middle man. I guess you could argue that the Indians were really fond of democrats and had this burning desire to lavish hundreds of thousands of dollars on them.

Now if you are a Conservative, keep in mind that there are accusations that Abramoff stole money from the tribes and that he didn’t particularly even like Indians. Why, who’s to say what his motive’s were when he gave that money to Republicans only. Why would he steal money from a group he was trying to win favors for? They thought that money was buying influence and he was ridiculing them. Maybe he was just a political junkie? He stole money from the Indians, lying to them about it’s purpose, so he could hang out with big shot Conservatives?

The whole entire wrongdoing in this sordid little affair is the influence of Congress the Indians were trying to buy. And like Dean says, they went directly to the democrats looking for that action.

It is not clear how many (if any) solons will wind up in jail because of their friendship with Abramoff. Bribery is very hard to prove. Congressman Ney, identified in Abramoff’s indictment as “Representative #1, says he was duped into performing favors for Abramoff’s clients. “Members of Congress are constantly raising and receiving money all the time, and they also perform official acts, says Ney’s lawyer, Mark Tuohey.

“Tom DeLay is not concerned that Mr. Abramoff is cooperating. He urges everyone involved to cooperate in the investigation and to tell the truth. Most of the influence peddling on Capitol Hill is perfectly legal: money funneled through charitable foundations or political-action committees.

If anyone thinks that Howard Dean would be any less of an imbecile than George W. Bush as President, here are a few “Deanisms”:

Howard Dean: “We have to stop terrorism before peace negotiations”. (Forward) vs Howard Dean: “[I don’t] believe stopping the terror has to be a prerequisite for talking.” (CNN)

Dean: “The way to balance the budget is for Congress to cut Social Security, move the retirement age to 70, cut defense, Medicare and veterans pensions, while the states cut almost everything else.” (Newhouse News) vs Dean: “I have never favored Social Security retirement at the age of 70, nor do I favor one of 68.” (debate, Aug. 5, 2003) vs Dean: “I also would entertain taking the retirement age to 68.” (Meet the Press, June 2003)

Here’s where he exhibits a little intellect: Howard Dean: “Trying to have it both ways demonstrates neither strong leadership nor good judgment.â€? (Boston Globe)

Liberal Texas Dem, they have said that for years and it is common knowledge. Look, the Dems are extremely hypocritical on Supreme Court nominees. I can guarantee that at least 22 of them have already made up their mind to vote no. It doesn’t matter what Alito says. His qualifications don’t matter. It just matters that the pro-choice lobby has so many of the Dems in their pockets. Ginsburg and Breyer were both openly pro-choice, but the Reps were principled enought to recognize they were qualified to be on the Court. Dems don’t play by those rules. John Roberts has been called the most qualified candidate ever for the Supreme Court and still had half the Dem senators vote against him.

Robertson has always made outlandish comments. It seems that the only difference now may be that they are directed towards the leaders of other countries instead of those he despises within the United States.

Before he is dismissed, however, we should consider a few facts. Robertson has built quite an apparatus for promoting a religious-ethical-political agenda into law and has a place of some influence within the Republican party.

In addition to the television network and his Christian Coalition organization, he has established an accredited law school to train “Christian” lawyers to challenge the doctrine of state neutrality. He has also created an organization called the American Center for Law and Justice whose “Chief Counsel” Jay Alan Sekulov is interviewed by major news networks, who has met with Bush to lobby for conservative supreme court appointees, and who coordinates the legal activities of over 700 “Christian” lawyers in an effort to promte this agenda.

Ralph Reed headed the Christian Coalition for 6 or 7 years and went on to head the Republican party in Georgia, run the southeastern campaign for George Bush in the 2004 election in order to ensure that evangelicals and fundamentalists turned out in numbers sufficient to produce a majority in the vote count and not just the electoral college.

Again Robertson’s absurd remarks are not new. Consider the following comments(and wonder why the Republican party didn’t repudiate this wretched, mean spirited, hate-filled man long ago.):

“When I said during my presidential bid that I would only bring Christians and Jews into the government, I hit a firestorm. What do you mean?' the media challenged me.You’re not going to bring atheists into the government? How dare you maintain that those who believe in the Judeo-Christian values are better qualified to govern America than Hindus and Muslims?’ My simple answer is, `Yes, they are.’”

-from Pat Robertson’s “The New World Order,” page 218.

“The Constitution of the United States, for instance, is a marvelous document for self-government by the Christian people. But the minute you turn the document into the hands of non-Christian people and atheistic people they can use it to destroy the very foundation of our society. And that’s what’s been happening.” — Pat Robertson, The 700 Club, Dec. 30, 1981

“It is interesting, that termites don’t build things, and the great builders of our nation almost to a man have been Christians, because Christians have the desire to build something. He is motivated by love of man and God, so he builds. The people who have come into (our) institutions (today) are primarily termites. They are into destroying institutions that have been built by Christians, whether it is universities, governments, our own traditions, that we have…. The termites are in charge now, and that is not the way it ought to be, and the time has arrived for a godly fumigation.”—Pat Robertson, New York Magazine, August 18, 1986

“You say you’re supposed to be nice to the Episcopalians and the Presbyterians and the Methodists and this, that, and the other thing. Nonsense. I don’t have to be nice to the spirit of the Antichrist. I can love the people who hold false opinions but I don’t have to be nice to them.”—Pat Robertson, The 700 Club, January 14, 1991

“Just like what Nazi Germany did to the Jews, so liberal America is now doing to the evangelical Christians. It’s no different. It is the same thing. It is happening all over again. It is the Democratic Congress, the liberal-based media and the homosexuals who want to destroy the Christians. Wholesale abuse and discrimination and the worst bigotry directed toward any group in America today. More terrible than anything suffered by any minority in history.”—Pat Robertson, 1993 interview with Molly Ivins

How can there be peace when drunkards, drug dealers, communists, atheists, New Age worshipers of Satan, secular humanists, oppressive dictators, greedy money changers, revolutionary assassins, adulterers, and homosexuals are on top?”—Pat Robertson, The New World Order, p.227

“There is no such thing as separation of church and state in the Constitution. It is a lie of the Left and we are not going to take it anymore.” —Pat Robertson, November 1993 during an address to the American Center for Law and Justice

(Talking about apartheid South Africa) “I think ‘one man, one vote,’ just unrestricted democracy, would not be wise. There needs to be some kind of protection for the minority which the white people represent now, a minority, and they need and have a right to demand a protection of their rights.”—Pat Robertson, “The 700 Club,” 3/18/92

“The feminist agenda is not about equal rights for women. It is about a socialist, anti-family political movement that encourages women to leave their husbands, kill their children, practice witchcraft, destroy capitalism, and become lesbians.” — Pat Robertson, fundraising letter, 1992 (Reported in the NY Times, part of a fundraising letter to defeat Bill Clinton, with the Hillary Clinton described in language similar to the second sentence.)

“I think we ought to close Halloween down. Do you want your children to dress up as witches? The Druids used to dress up like this when they were doing human sacrifice… [Your children] are acting out Satanic rituals and participating in it, and don’t even realize it.”—Pat Robertson, “The 700 Club,” 10/29/82

Ricky,

This is what Nancy Pelosi has to say about “apples and oranges” comparisons:

House minority leader Nancy Pelosi, the California Democrat, engaged in a small but cheesy bit of deception last week. She released a letter, which quickly found its way to the front page of the New York Times, that she had written on Oct. 11, 2001, to then National Security Agency director General Michael V. Hayden. In it she expressed concern that Hayden, who had briefed the House Intelligence Committee about the steps he was taking to track down al-Qaeda terrorists after the 9/11 attacks, was not acting with “specific presidential authorization.” Hayden wrote her back that he was acting under the powers granted to his agency in a 1981 Executive Order… .

The release of Pelosi’s letter last week and the subsequent Times story (“Agency First Acted on Its Own to Broaden Spying, Files Show”) left the misleading impression that a) Hayden had launched the controversial data-mining operation on his own, and b) Pelosi had protested it. But clearly the program didn’t exist when Pelosi wrote the letter. When I asked the Congresswoman about this, she said, “Some in the government have accused me of confusing apples and oranges. My response is, it’s all fruit.”

There you go, It’s all fruit!

Like I said Ricky, “innocent until proven guilty” is the leading principle of our system of laws. To apply it arbitrarily is hypocritical. That is what makes America different than any tin-plated dictatorship. If America is truely America, bin Laden must be assumed innocent until proven guilty or the principle isn’t a principle at all; then it would be just a convenient fallacy. All Congressmen should certainly be assumed innocent as well. In this age of political “gotcha”, I believe half of what I see and next to none of what I hear, anyway.

So if we apply this same logic to Pat Robertson, what you are saying is that he is innocent of making stupid vile statements until his guilt is proven in a court of law. After all, not only did Bin Laden order 9/11, he celebrated it and took responsibility for it.

Liberals have redefined patriotism to mean “dissent, protesting against U.S. policy. Why? Because that is what liberals do. They criticize their country and moralize to their countrymen. They are “above the rest of us. But dissent is not service. Dissent is simply personal gratification, a right guaranteed. Patriotism is service; and the act of denouncing one’s country simply serves one’s personal need to be heard.

Likewise, idealism has been redefined by many liberals to mean doing that which undermines U.S. attempts at self-defense and condemning one’s country abroad, even though by so doing one jeopardizes the physical safety of fellow citizens.

This guy knows what he’s talking about.

Oh cool, Al Qaeda has set forth their terms for peace:

“First, chase out the invaders from our territory in Palestine, in Iraq and everywhere in Islamic land.

“Second, instal sharia (Islamic law) on the entire Earth and spread Islamic justice there (…). The attacks will not cease until after the victory of Islam and the setting up of sharia,” he swore.

Why am I willing to bet that these are acceptable to the democrats? This sounds like something Murtha or Dean would negotiate.

It’s judges, not prosecutors who set trial dates. If DeLay’s lawyers want an early trial, they’ll have to ask. Again.

Interesting to note that the Texas Criminal Court of Appeals is made up of 9 justices. They’re elected, not appointed. They’re supposed to be non-partisan, but they all ran as Republicans.

DeLay backers are dreading the thought of him wearing white jumpsuits with large, black horizontal stripes. They will make him look fat.

By RW-(the original)

January 9, 2006 09:28 PM | Link to this

rushncap,

The Abramoff thing wouldn’t have anything to do with the current charges. If he’s involved in criminal activity in that case then he can be charged for that then.

In the current case, if Earle has the evidence he claimed he had to the Grand Jury it’s time to put up or drop the charges.

By finch

January 9, 2006 10:07 PM | Link to this

I honestly don’t understand your question. Personally, I’m against cherry-picking the Constitution. Which clauses/amendments do you think I’m ignoring?

By RW-(the original)

January 9, 2006 10:27 PM | Link to this

finch,

If you scroll back you’ll see it’s started more as a joke. I don’t think Delay’s lawyers are going to let Ronnie Earle get away with endless stall tactics.

Once he got his indictment he needed to be ready to go. I’m pretty sure you’re not supposed to charge people with crimes and then start looking for evidence.

The Sixth amendment, the one I linked in my earlier question, should eventually have to come into play.

By finch

January 9, 2006 10:36 PM | Link to this

RW,

I see your point. You have to wonder, though, why the Texas (GOP) courts haven’t called Earle on this. But they’re not cutting DeLay much slack at all. Meanwhile, it’s hard to argue that Ronnie is NOT a little, eentsy, teentsy, tiny bit partisan. Sometimes.

Ya know?

By RW-(the original)

January 9, 2006 10:46 PM | Link to this

finch,

I never understood his lawyers appealing to have the charges thrown out and at the same time demanding it be sent back for immediate trial.

It was doubtful that the appeals court would throw out a valid grand jury indictment and if you’re arguing for that it’s hard to show simultaneous proof that you aren’t being given a speedy trial. But his lawyers know a lot more than I do.

My guess is now that they don’t have the motion to dismiss on the table they will demand a speedy trial and have it either granted or have a better case to appeal for it.

By rushncap

January 10, 2006 03:16 AM | Link to this

I’m confused, RW, as to why you feel that justice should move at such a pace as not to bore you. I don’t think that should be the case. I think justice should move at the fastest possible rate that still allows it to maximize its correctness. And, yes, in complicated, important cases that takes months, sometimes over a year.

All in indicment means is that there is probable cause to charge someone with a crime. If you actually looked at how our justice system works, you’d notice that it is very common to have someone charged with a crime wait a significant amount of time between being charged and the case going to trial. So just because DeLay happens to be an influential and thoroughly corrupt neocon does not mean that he deserves some sort of special treatment, no matter what he may think. I’m not a lawyer (and neither, I’m sure, are you), but I imagine that an indicament also opens more investigative avenues for the prosecutors, which were not available when DeLay was just under suspicion. I imagine it has become far easier to obtain warrants and interview those associated with the case now that there is the weight of a grand jury behind such maneuvers.

Finally, I notice that you seem to vigorously question the “stalling tactics” of the prosecution, whilst ascribing pure and just motives to DeLay’s lawyers’ attempts to speed this up as much as they can. Why is that? Pure, blatant partisanship? Intellectual dishonesty? Overwhelming gullibility? Both sides are jostling for an upper hand, as always happens in such matters. The fact that you seem to think that only one side is to blame for everything is telling.
