I can see Bush defenders in the early 1800s. “This ‘blacks should be free’ thing is getting old.” Or perhaps as the British: “this ‘America should have Independence thing’ is getting old.” Or in modern times: “This ‘gays should be able to marry’ thing is getting old.”
Oooohhhhh. I get it!

Well, Luckovich has wrapped up another nice little Christmas present for the liberals. There’s the tree, the stockings and the little white lie about Bush. Who could ask for more? Maybe AJC will put a bonus in his stocking for this contribution. If not, Osama will send one in appreciation.

Well, timid one, perhaps you are not used to the shenanigans of political cartoonists such as Luckovich. If you honestly don’t understand, these cartoonists try to make political people look like fools. In this cartoon, Luckovich shows a lady talking on the phone to “Pumpkins” and saying that the president of the United States is sitting in his office evesdropping on their conversations. That is so rediculous that it is supposed to be funny. Luckovich, an anti-war liberal is trying to make our president look like some kind of subversive spy type. The politics behind this are so complicated:Patriot Act, NSA, balky Congress, wartime Presidential powers, wire taps, legalities, terrorists. It goes on and on. Don’t have any more time tonight. I am sure someone else will give you a different opinion.
Good night.

For Our Democrat Friends:
Please accept with no obligation, implied or implicit, our best wishes for an environmentally conscious, socially responsible, low-stress, non-addictive, gender-neutral celebration of the winter solstice holiday, practiced within the most enjoyable traditions of the religious persuasion of your choice, or secular practices of your choice, with respect for the religious/secular persuasion and/or traditions of others, or their choice not to practice religious or secular traditions at all.
We also wish you a fiscally successful, personally fulfilling and medically uncomplicated recognition of the onset of the generally accepted calendar year 2006, but not without due respect for the calendars of choice of other cultures whose contributions to society have helped make America great. Not to imply that America is necessarily greater than any other country nor the only America in the Western Hemisphere; and without regard to the race, creed, color, age, physical ability, religious faith or sexual preference of the wishee.
By accepting these greetings you are accepting these terms. This greeting is subject to clarification or withdrawal. It is freely transferable with no alteration to the original greeting. It implies no promise by the wisher to actually implement any of the wishes for herself or himself or others, and is void where prohibited by law and is revocable at the sole discretion of the wisher.
This wish is warranted to perform as expected within the usual application of good tidings for a period of one year or until the issuance of a subsequent holiday greeting, whichever comes first, and warranty is limited to replacement of this wish or issuance of a new wish at the sole discretion of the wisher.”

As long as whosits keeps on listenin’ and abusin’ his authority, continuing to point it out ain’t gettin’ old—no way, no how.
Joseph McCarthey’s witchhunt killed many creative people’s careers (as well as sometimes literally killing them by killing their spirts); and we may have lost some great works due to McCarthey’s abuse of power as well.
It is true that whosits never even had a passport before becoming king of the U.S.? No wonder he’s always suspicious of them furenurs and people who may be talkin’ to ‘em.

Kevin, Difference: So far no one has shown that Clinton or Carter used the power of their office to imtimidate political enemies like Nixon did with is “Whitehouse Plumbers” and the Bush administration did with Valerie Plame (oh wait, the Bush spin doctoring machine will probably tell us that exposing Plame’s CIA identity was neccessary to insure national security). I don’t think people would be up in arms about this wire-tapping thing if Bush didn’t already have a history of abuse of power.

The Scribbler’s recipe for political cartooning:
1) Take any political issue that casts the Republicans in a bad light
2) Beat the horse.
3) Flay the horse.
4) Wring every last bit of commentary possible out of said political issue until nothing is left but bones.
5) (Optional) Draw a maximum of one cartoon per year that disparages Democrats, no matter their levels of malfeasance or complicity - you know, so that you can show that you’re balanced.
6) Repeat, beginning at Step 1, until even your supporters recognize that you’re a tired, boring hack…

This is an excellent cartoon Mike.
Keep ‘em coming on this front. The psuedo-patriots that p** and moan on this site that are willing to give up some of their rights are cowards and leaders of the real anti-America crowd.
They should all abide by their sometime credo: America, Love it or Leave it. Since they don’t love this country enough to stand up for the basis of it — the US Constitution — the should get the heck out.

Intercepting communications into and out of the United States of persons linked to AL-QAIDA in order to detect and prevent a catastrophic attack is reasonable. In this circumstance, if there is not enough time to get a warrant, exceptions can be made for the sake of national security.

OO,
Still waiting on you to enlighten me on what your link was supposed to point to the other day. Let’s discuss whatever it was.
As for ML and this issue… The secret abuses of the 4th Amendment rights of the citizens of this Country is not an “issue of the day” that can be ignored just becuase you’re bored with it. This is serious and needs to remain in the public focus. I believe a crime was commited and do not think ML or the AJC or FOX News should do anything but discuss, report, investigate this until all the facts are brought to light and the full extent of this illegal activity is known to one and all.
Finally, I’ve never attacked you so I don’t know where this paranoia is coming from. I mock Andy alot but that’s becuase he’s a whacko. I inadvertantly taunted RW yesterday, admitted my error and retracted it. When have I done anything to you? Serously, what’s got your knickers in a wad this am?

How much more does the left think they can get out of this Cindy Sheehan woman? Very interesting, the holiday “greeting” from Prester John…
It shows what it’s really all about for the Republicans: they despise Democrats for representing something other than their vision of the all-WASP world that they long for and expect to live in after the Second Coming. They see us as the enablers of a real-life Nicolae Carpathia (see the Left Behind series of trash novels).
Republicans, on the other hand, are the virtuous Christians knights that will defeat the Beast.
It figures. Except for a select group of war profiteers and other scoundrels, it is impossible for a rational individual to still support George Bush.

I have no idea where “Prester John” got this. As you have pointed out some variation appears in many areas, I have received similar greetings via e-mail. There is no need for attribution in a case like that.
In the hypothetical case of some unnamed pompous jerk trying to act like they are some sort of legal genius cutting and pasting directly from the ACLU web site referencing cases the ACLU is proudly holding up as examples of their fine work, then said pompous jerk should attribute their source.

Sigh. RW, it’s depressing that you don’t believe that Senator Joe McCarthy “actually destroyed” the lives of people.
McCarthy’s campaign to crush the reputations, careers, and (yes) the lives of people began with this famous telegram that he sent to President Harry Truman in 1950.
You remember Truman, don’t you? The guy who dropped The Bomb on Japan? The guy who stood up to the Reds in Korea?
It’s believed that Truman never sent this telegram in response, in which he told (or wanted to tell) McCarthy he “was not fit to serve in the U.S. government”, and adding that “the people of Wisconsin must be very sorry to be represented in the Senate by such a person”.
McCarthy went on to tar and feather countless others. Oh no, he didn’t directly ruin them. He simply presided over and encouraged “blacklists” that branded people suspected of even saying the word “communist”.
McCarthy’s exuberant campaign to crucify anyone who even knew someone who might be a Commie started to fall apart during this exchange between him and Special Counsel for the Army Joseph N. Welch.
Do you really think, as Ms. Coulter does, that McCarthy was at best, a patriot, or at worst, a harmless crank?
“You have done enough. Have you no sense of decency sir, at long last? Have you left no sense of decency?”
You probably know all about this already, RW. The links are for open minded people who either don’t know, or feel the need for a refresher course.
For further information, go see “Good Night, and Good Luck”, George Clooney’s entertaining movie about Edward R. Murrow’s expose of McCarthy. I won’t bother posting a link. Now playing at a theater near you.

Unseating old-time liberal ‘actor-vists’ such as Warren Beatty, Tim Robbins and director Rob Reiner, George Clooney has now emerged as the leading political voice (kook) in Hollywood, winning plaudits from liberals and stinging attacks from conservatives.

My like or dislike of the President is irrelevant as far as whether a crime was commited or not.
It is clear that what the President did was illeagal to many that are smarter than you or I. I agree with them and apparently you agree with those equally intellegent folks that believe otherwise.
Is your position based solely on you blind trust and support for the President? I think not. I’d be willing to bet that you’ve listened to the same arguments I have and have just come to a different conclusion.

Ira,
Maybe you should let “finch” handle his own argument, you’re sinking it faster than the Titanic.
McCarthyism took place during a period of intense suspicion in the United States primarily from 1950 to 1954, when the U.S. government was actively countering American Communist Party subversion, its leadership, and others suspected of being Communists or Communist sympathizers. During this period people from all walks of life became the subject of aggressive “witch-hunts,” often based on inconclusive or questionable evidence. It grew out of the Second Red Scare that began in the late 1940s and is named after the U.S. Senator Joseph McCarthy, a Republican of Wisconsin.

Finch, please tell me that you are not enriching your history studies from a movie starring liberal hate-Bush George Clooney? That is like asking Luckovich to describe the good qualities of George W. Bush.
As to McCarthy, sounds like he started a true search to uncover Communist subversion and then went beserk. Sorta like Cindy Sheehan. She lost a son and then went beserk over notoriety. If Truman didn’t like McCarthy, I would be inclined to dislike him too. Truman had a good head on him and a character strong enough to do what was right. George W. Bush is much like him.

Not bitter. Just resigned to the fact that you and yours are next to impossible to engage in reasonable discourse.
It seems to me that you’re po’ed at gettig busted over having a double standard when it comes to “posts” on this blog. Sorry I had to expose you but it needed doing.
Take a look back at the back and forth I had with DR R the other day. We disagreed, respectfully, and had a nice discussion. Take a look above at my give and take with Jay. No venom there.
Why do you think all of your discussions here devolve into your alternately trying to claim a moral high ground and snippy little barbs? Perhaps the common denominator is you? RW? the original? Hmmm? You?

Yes, let’s move on. You obviously believe in the Old Testament, as you cited Nebuchadnezzar. Let’s just see what the Old Testament prophesied about the Coming of Christ-
Psalm 2:7
I will proclaim the decree of the Lord: He said to me, “You are my Son; today I have become your Father”.
Zechariah 9:9
“Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout in triumph, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold your King is coming to you; He is just and endowed with salvation, Humble, mounted on a donkey, Even on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
Daniel 7:13, 14
I kept looking in the night visions,
And behold, with the clouds of heaven
One like a Son of Man was coming,
And he came up to the Ancient of Days
And was presented before Him. And to Him was given dominion,
Glory and a kingdom,
*That all the peoples, nations, and men of every language *
Might serve Him.
His dominion is an everlasting dominion
Which will not pass away;
And His kingdom is one
Which will not be destroyed.
Amen.

Neither the Old Testament nor the New Testament is anything but literature and propaganda. Old Testaments prophecies were transformed by Christian writers to pretend they had something to do with Jesus, which they did not. You cannot go to the Bible for predictions of what will occur, since the people inventing these predictions had purposes and intentions far different from our concerns.
The desire for a book which one can believe is understandable but there is no such book. God, if there is a God, which is highly unlikely, does not need to write a book or to dictate a book to others.
People who say they believe because of some biblical verse cannot tell you why that verse is more believable than something out of the Iliad, the Bhagavad Gita, or the Koran.
And their God or Jesus is just another version of the Blue Fairy.

For the pinko trinity, Midori, Candide and Ira: It should turn your heads that the Old Testament, which is believed by many different faiths, including Christianity, so accurately predicted the Coming of the Birth of the Saviour, the Word Made Flesh. These books were written, as best as we can tell, hundreds of years apart, and, most importantly, before the Birth of the Lord Jesus Christ. There are mulitudes of witnesses for both Testaments, the Calender was changed at the Birth of the Saviour and, at last count, 95% of Americans believe in God.

no one can prove one way or the other. what you believe is what you believe and probably will never change.
my only qualms with religion is that is seems to be something you are born into. if your born in the US the chances of being christian are high, whereas if you are born in Iraq you are more than likely muslim. Same for most countries. A religion is usually geographically located. Not so much anymore but you need to be looking at the time and place it started and not today’s date of locations. That alone proves to me that a higher power doesn’t exist. And the fact humans have hooked a man’s brain to a computer. now when he thinks about moving his hand the cursor on his computer moves. now that’s cool.

Cherish: we godless bastards don’t have to prove there is no god. You have to prove there is one. Nothing in science demands a creator. All we need is that things develop through evolution. That is why you all hate evolution — it makes god unnecessary.
But on another tack: Even if there is a God, surely he is not so evil as to demand that his son be crucified for sinful man. Most of Christian theology is extremely sado-masochistic. Is this the God you want to worship?
God is our blue fairy, whom we need when we are blue. But when we are feeling ok. we don’t pay him much mind.

Candide: The man that built the very first car took it out for a test drive, when it started raining. The man couldn’t see the road anymore because he forgot to install windshield wipers. From there, the car evolved into one that could be driven in the rain.
Now the liberal belief system has the history of the car starting when the windshield wipers were installed. The pinko who installed them sat around thinking how much better he was than everybody else since he came up with the windshield wiper idea. He came to consider himself a god and wrote a manifesto about himself and his windshield wipers. Many other libs read the manifesto and were mesmorized by the story of the windshield wiper. Taken by the wisdom of the windshield wiper pinko; they denounced god.
The Christians saw the windshield wiper manifesto and had to stifle gales of laughter because God taught them not to judge others. They also thanked the man who Created the automobile because they didn’t have to walk to Church anymore.
Any questions?

finch,
I’ll repost:
finch,
One of these days in a post all by itself, would you mind listing the actual people whose lives were destroyed by Joseph McCarthy?
Take your time, I understand you don’t get to post often.
As most people could see this a simple request for names, it implies neither that they exist nor that they don’t.
To which you respond:
Good afternoon, RW. Jeez, I got so rattled by your reverence, shared by Ann Coulter for Joseph McCarthy,…
If you find reverence, to the point of being rattled, in my above questions would you please point that out in a separate post after you answer the initial question. That would be my question, not your redefinition of the question.
I do love this part:
I’d like to thank Ira for a solid, though not complete list of McCarthy’s victims.
Since neither of Ira’s lists contain anyone whose lives were destroyed by McCarthy then, unless the number is in fact zero, I would agree that would indicate an incomplete list.
So finch,
One of these days in a post all by itself, would you mind listing the actual people whose lives were destroyed by Joseph McCarthy?

hey RW When the United States entered the Second Word War McCarthy resigned as a circuit judge and joined the Marines. After the war McCarthy ran against Robert La Follette to become Republican candidate for the senate. As one of his biographers has pointed out, his campaign posters pictured him in “full fighting gear, with an aviator’s cap, and belt upon belt of machine gun ammunition wrapped around his bulky torso.” He claimed he had completed thirty-two missions when in fact he had a desk job and only flew in training exercises. In his campaign, McCarthy attacked La Follette for not enlisting during the war. He had been forty-six when Pearl Harbor had been bombed, and was in fact too old to join the armed services. McCarthy also claimed that La Follette had made huge profits from his investments while he had been away fighting for his country. The suggestion that La Follette had been guilty of war profiteering (his investments had in fact been in a radio station), was deeply damaging and McCarthy won by 207,935 to 202,557. La Follette, deeply hurt by the false claims made against him, retired from politics, and later committed suicide.
On his first day in the Senate, McCarthy called a press conference where he proposed a solution to a coal-strike that was taking place at the time. McCarthy called for John L. Lewis and the striking miners to be drafted into the Army. If the men still refused to mine the coal, McCarthy suggested they should be court-martialed for insubordination and shot.
McCarthy’s first years in the Senate were unimpressive. People also started coming forward claiming that he had lied about his war record. Another problem for McCarthy was that he was being investigated for tax offences and for taking bribes from the Pepsi-Cola Company. In May, 1950, afraid that he would be defeated in the next election, McCarthy held a meeting with some of his closest advisers and asked for suggestions on how he could retain his seat. Edmund Walsh, a Roman Catholics priest, came up with the idea that he should begin a campaign against communist subversives working in the Democratic administration.
On 9th February, 1950, McCarthy made a speech in Salt Lake City where he attacked Dean Acheson, the Secretary of State, as “a pompous diplomat in striped pants”. He claimed that he had a list of 57 people in the State Department that were known to be members of the American Communist Party. McCarthy went on to argue that some of these people were passing secret information to the Soviet Union. He added: “The reason why we find ourselves in a position of impotency is not because the enemy has sent men to invade our shores, but rather because of the traitorous actions of those who have had all the benefits that the wealthiest nation on earth has had to offer - the finest homes, the finest college educations, and the finest jobs in Government we can give.”
On 20th February McCarthy made a six hour speech on the Senate floor about how the Democratic administration had been infiltrated by communist subversives.
McCarthy named four of these people, who had held left-wing views in their youth, but when Democrats accused McCarthy of smear tactics, he suggested they were part of this communist conspiracy. This claim was used against his critics who were up for re-election in 1950. Many of them lost and this made other Democrats reluctant to criticize McCarthy in case they became targets of his smear campaigns
Drew Pearson immediately launched an attack on Joe McCarthy. He pointed out that only three people on the list were State Department officials. When this list was first published four years ago, Gustavo Duran and Mary Jane Keeney had both resigned from the State Department in 1946. The third person, John Service, had been cleared after a prolonged and careful investigation. Pearson also pointed out that none of these people had been members of the American Communist Party.

whynot,
You can paste in the history of the world if you’d like, but I think you are falling for “finch’s” trap of redefining the question.

Nothing like a supremely powerful police state with unquestioned authority to make those “smaller goverment” conservatives happy, all right!
After, all security’s MUCH more important than some piddling old freedom, isn’t it?
