candide: i suggest you stop relying on your wacked out friends, cnn and local newspapers for your news, and educate yourself before forming your opinions. think, if you still can: would a moron enforce policies that are making our country safer and economy stronger? has there ever been a politician, republican, democrat, or anywhere in between that has not lied during their public service? what politician has not, at some level, deceived their way into power? if the american people believed that this man is a fool, would they have elected him president not once, but twice? you are entitled to your opinions. i am glad that people who share your views are currently a defeatist, losing minority in our country. our president may not have the best grammar, verb tense, or vocabulary, but that does not make him a fool.

my goodness this site has devolved since i’ve been out of town. i have decided not to post anymore because i have become nothing more than a troll. i guess i prefer my debates to be in person. face to face contact is so much more rewarding in forming a dialogue. in the one in six trillion chance that we all converge in the same bar, i’ll be buying all the drinks.
i think rw has a wonderful sense of humor; buff is like a great big old teddy bear (please don’t take offense, i mean that in the best way); finch is a good and knowlegable guy; candide is a somewhat annoying, but playful character; phil is a troll like me (inserting non-relevant topics); dusty is a delight who probably still puts peanuts in his coca cola - i love that; andy is, i’m sure, a good family man who only speaks his mind - i don’t agree with what you say, but i respect your devotion to family and faith.
to scooter, i say this: i’m twenty seven years old, i’m a social science grad student, and am in a monogamous relationship.
if ml puts some kind of recognition program on his web-blog, i might come back. there’s too many people pretending to be others. there are good alternatives - ml, check it out. btw, ml, i liked the king kids and the turning the corner cartoon.
you guys and gals (jc, don’t take offense to gals) take it easy. sorry to have been a troll.

getalife: That means you missed the best part:
Among the things that war entails are: killing people (sometimes innocent), destroying buildings (sometimes innocent) and spying on people (sometimes innocent). That is why war is a bad thing. MSNBC Poll:
Do you believe President Bush’s actions justify impeachment? * 31461 responses
Yes, between the secret spying, the deceptions leading to war and more, there is plenty to justify putting him on trial. 88% No, like any president, he has made a few missteps, but nothing approaching “high crimes and misdemeanors.” 4% No, the man has done absolutely nothing wrong. Impeachment would just be a political lynching. 8% I don’t know. 1%

Darn, I missed devil doll. And after all the nice things she said about me, and most everybody else! Please come back. I promise to join any campaign here that prevents people with no integrity from hijacking other people’s handles! And we can talk rock and roll and the joys of significant others.
RW, Coulter is, as usual, the tramp steamer of wingnut writers, busy noting imaginary similarities between apples and oranges. Her comparison of the NY Times story on web pedophiles with the Bush administration’s apparently unconstitutional phone tap and email fishing expeditions is logically skewed and intellectually barren. Even by her standards, it reeks of shallow sanctimony. Plus, she’s a dog. Michelle Malkin on the other hand? There’s just something about that woman…
Andy, are you just Andy again? That’s fine by me. You could call yourself Lefty and your prose would reveal your true identity (that’s a compliment). But rethink abandoning Dude. That was kinda cool.
Midori, I like the MSNBC poll results, but viewer/reader response polls are about as accurate as ouija boards. Darnit.
I guess I was too late for the fun. Sleep tight, everyone…
Oh, and Mike swats a homer again. When is President Bush going to realize that Dick Cheney, once President Ford’s chief of staff, has never shaken off the rage he felt when his hero, the tyrant Richard Nixon was deposed? Cheney cares more about giving the office of President sweeping dictatorial powers than he does in building and preserving Bush’s fading legacy.
Impeach Cheney and Bush wouldn’t be so bad.

Nice article in the litter box liner about Delay’s fundraising, he was rather the boring sort, wasn’t he?
Yet in the sort of unbridled arrogance that we have routinely come to expect from liberal Democrats, Rep. Sanchez has scheduled a fundraising pajama party at Hugh Hefner’s Playboy Mansion. And despite the objections of Patrick Kennedy, D-R.I., son of renowned party-animal Ted Kennedy, the show will go on; and the clothes will come off. Furthermore, every garment and dollar that is dropped at the affair will go to the Democratic Party.
Hopefully, Swimmer will get a designated driver..

The democrats would never sell the White House as a fundraiser, would they?
Welcome to Bill and Arianna’s excellent adventure: on the heels of a small donation made to the Democratic National Committee — the result of a lost bet with Al Franken — she’s invited to spend three days, with access as full as an intern’s, in the infamous Lincoln bedroom.

Apparently, they’re hoping that sheer attitude will be enough to brazen this out. But that only works if enough fools agree that, in a “time of war,” the President should be above such petty trifling constraints as the Constitution.
Great cartoon, Mike. And another good, seasonal reminder that America is infested with people claiming to be Christians without a shred of understanding of what their religion actually teaches.

It’s the mantra of the Bush administration. If the truth doesn’t help your cause, make things up!
“President Bush asserted this week that the news media (that was the Washington Times, Andy!) published a U.S. government leak in 1998 about Osama bin Laden’s use of a satellite phone, alerting the al Qaeda leader to government monitoring and prompting him to abandon the device.
“But it appears to be an urban myth.”
It seems there were two earlier reports on bin Ladin’s satphone. One from the Taliban, when it stioll ruled Afganistan, and one from Osama himself!
The truth shall set us free.

Our leader’s shouldn’t be trying to reduce our dependence on “foreign oil” with a quick fix, they should be trying to ween us of our dependence on pertroleum as our primary fuel-source, altogether.
Whether whale blubber or Texas tea, what we burn in our lamps eventually runs low and brings us trouble. But it’s the light of American intelligence and ingenuity that seems to suffer the most. Then we expect somebody with a badge from Toastmasters will solve our problems for us.

Hit the nail on the head Mike! But it’s not just Dubya, it’s a republican disease. Once they get in power, they truly believe they have the God given right to do any damn thing they please. Laws just don’t apply to them. It was that way with Nixon and with Reagan too, not to mention Delay, Cheney, Reed, Libby, etc, etc, etc….the list goes on and on. Eventually it all catches up to them. That’s exactly what’s happening to the current corrupt administration. It’s just a matter of time before they fall. Unfortunately, they’ve done so much damage to the country that we may all fall with them. Who would’ve thought that a mental midget like bush could be so destructive and decietful!

Andy: Nuclear breeder reactors are the energy solution. Fusion too far off; plasma containment problems not conquered. French nuclear program uses smaller reactors than US behemoths so there is not enough fissionable material to go critical; no chance of melt-down. French were smarter than us and are now nearly energy independent (can afford to thumb their noses at us). Jimmy Carter(D) saddled us with this one. Said that cause breeder reactors work on enriched plutonium cycle, the fuel might be diverted for a home-made H-bombs (hah, hah). Breeder reactors make their own fuel and burn their own waste (biggest problem with existing US reactors is the tons of long-life nuclear waste they produce every year). Free, clean energy is already available to those who aren’t too afraid to use it.

Why is fundraising a crime when a Republican does it but not when a pinko does?

The Volcker commission faulted Annan for bad management of the oil-for-food program but cleared him of personal wrongdoing, including influencing a contract that went to a company that employed his son.
You are saying the when Paul Volker’s commission cleared Annan from any personal wrongdoing, they were wrong. They lied.

You had an opportunity and you blew it and you gave up! Sheesh, this won’t be any fun if you keep folding like this. Stand your ground if you believe something to be true and only concede if you change your mind or discover you were wrong.
Goodness knows, I’m wrong on stuff from time to time, I change my mind after learning new facts, I embrace a new perspective because it makes more sense but I never just give up.

He scored a point by dissing the ANWR vote, but fumbled when responding to the “light water reactor” solution proposed by Antiradical. Probably because it’s a French idea.
His cry in the wilderness, “Fund raising is virtuous if you are a lib, it is a CRIME! if you are George Bush, is that right?” falls flat. Really flat. Repukes are in hot water for a plethora of SECRET fundraising. Democrats are out in the open. Abramoff, secret. Soros, open. Get it?

He also has a strong religious faith. Many of you who come here simply want to show that you are smarter and better informed than Andy. You end up looking quite the opposite. Hey, RW… I know it seems like fun to poke at Ted (how long can you tread water) Kennedy and his anecdote about the graduate student and the “Little Red Book”.
But this happened to me. Drop dead seriously. A long time ago, when I was young, I got a “Little Red Book” in the mail. I was curious, okay? Who the heck was this Mao guy anyway?
My dear Mother and I were ordered to the Post Office where we were questioned by federal agents who demanded my book (I gave it to them) and told me to turn over or burn any similar material I might receive.
If I had been older, smarter and angrier I might have told them to stuff it. Then again…
You see, this little incident taught me some important lessons. Question authority. Your government isn’t always there to help you. Never ever let someone limit your freedom of association. And never ever let someone tell you what you can and cannot read or say or think or write.
Warrantless wiretaps and email intercepts are a form of indimidation meant to limit your rights by fanning your fear of detention. The Bush administration’s flagrant use of them raises questions.
Secret demands for your financial, medical, post office and library records (where if someone TELLS you you’re being investigated, they’re committing a crime) are also a form of intimidation.
The argument that “if you’re innocent, so what?” is fatally flawed. Submitting to questionings, detentions, legal fees and court appearances which all result in your “being released without charges” is an oppressive government’s way of silencing you. Among other things, it makes it difficult to keep a job and pay your bills. So the Patriot Act, in it’s original form, raises quiestions, too.
No, I’m not paranoid. I’ve learned from personal experience that I’m very definitely not paranoid.
Merry Christmas.

finch,
The book isn’t that hard to get right out on the street with people everywhere, so I don’t think the Feds are snatching up everybody that looks at one. As you can see from that photo essay, the Bay area would be pretty empty.
I’m not as surprised that Kennedy wrote the unsourced anecdote as I am that the Boston Globe reports the rumor, but not the “story”. Maybe he was talking about you, but that would certainly pre-date the Patriot Act. (It doesn’t pre-date the FBI, does it?)
For anyone else reading,

RW, my “Little Red Book” experience dates back to J. Edgar Hoover’s twilight years. The Nixon era. I’m not paranoid, really! But I’m concerned for anyone who is complacent and naive when it comes to the evil that humans can do.
The Bush administration may not have “Big Brother” in mind. Then again, some Bush aides may. Dick Cheney, who never forgot his days as Chief of Staff under the post-Nixon powerless Gerald Ford comes to mind. Either way, they’re ignoring or attacking the very safeguards in the Bill of Rights that protect us from genuine tyrants.
You are a consistent defender of the Bush administration, RW. If I have misrepresented your views, please call me on it. I’m not too proud to apologize.
I agree with you that Andy is being demonized by some rather nasty people here. There’s no excuse for impersonating him. However, some of the posts from people who pretend to be Andy, who are so clearly not Andy, are preposterously funny.

finch,
These snippets won’t make much sense since they will no longer be couched in the “Son, let me tell you a little about the way the world works” diatribe, but here goes.
Your government isn’t always there to help you.
I am from the Ronald Reagan school of thought here, the scariest words you can hear are, “I’m from the Government and I’m here to help.”
Warrantless wiretaps and email intercepts are a form of indimidation (sic) meant to limit your rights by fanning your fear of detention. The Bush administration’s flagrant use of them raises questions.
We will have to agree to disagree here because I think they are operating within the law, you believe they are operating outside the law and neither of us knows enough to be sure at this point.
If you think your cell phone, wireless phone, or e-mail transmissions are secure, however, you’re beyond naive. (Don’t get paranoid on me!)
Secret demands for your financial, medical, post office and library records
I don’t agree with any of those things being done without a warrant, but oddly the people that use that as an excuse to sunset the Patriot Act don’t seem to care that the law allows this in all sorts of other criminal investigations and even if you killed the Patriot Act today nothing would change in the other laws.
The argument that “if you’re innocent, so what?
I have never made that argument or anything you could twist into that argument.

Brian Curtis:
Ann Coulter clerked for the Honorable Pasco Bowman II of the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit and was an attorney in the Department of Justice Honors Program for outstanding law school graduates. After practicing law in private practice in New York City, Coulter worked for the Senate Judiciary Committee, where she handled crime and immigration issues for Senator Spencer Abraham of Michigan. From there, she became a litigator with the Center For Individual Rights in Washington, DC, a public interest law firm dedicated to the defense of individual rights with particular emphasis on freedom of speech, civil rights, and the free exercise of religion. A Connecticut native, Coulter graduated with honors from Cornell University School of Arts & Sciences, and received her J.D. from University of Michigan Law School, where she was an editor of The Michigan Law Review.

“the law allows this (the use of phone, postal, medical, bank and library records) in all sorts of other criminal investigations and even if you killed the Patriot Act today nothing would change in the other laws.”
RW, with the exception of the current Patriot Act, the law does not allow this without a court’s permission. My objection to the Patriot Act centers on warrantless subpoenas, and it’s provision that notifying people that their records are being searched, which would give them the opportunity to defend themselves, is in itself a crime.
Would you agree with me that if this isn’t illegal, it should be?
“If you think your cell phone, wireless phone, or e-mail transmissions are secure, however, you’re beyond naive. (Don’t get paranoid on me!)”
No, I don’t. Newt Gingrich, Tom DeLay and Dick Armey helped make that clear in 1996. But warrantless snailmail and landline intercepts are, and should be, illegal. The legality of warrantless wireless intercepts I’ll leave to the courts.
The argument that “if you’re innocent, so what?

R.W.: What is your objective on this blog?

Objective Observer,
I can tell you one thing that makes this blog much less enjoyable is someone that will act as if they want to discuss or debate, but takes every cheap shot in the book when they appear to be talking to someone else and you know is the kind of person that would smile to your face and stick a knife in your back any chance they got.

R.W.: You of all people…Dusty & Ricky and a few others are here to reasonably debate your issues. Would you rather debate with the likes of Iras…or Finchs?
Ira is not content to discuss, he wants you to see it his way, and if you don’t, he resorts to vicious attacks and name calling. If we were all successful in bringing everyone around to our way of thinking, we would end up arguing against ourselves. How much fun would that be?
Ira wants to reign supreme! Finch just wants to engage in discussion.

R.W.: Is that really how you see him? I guess you would have to be female to see him in a different light. I couldn’t find any posts today where he did that.

Objective Observer,
Maybe finch wants to discuss things civilly now. I hope so because he is a smart guy with a sense of humor and presents a challenge. That hasn’t been my experience so far with finch. He’s no different than Ira, but finch will wait for a new thread, bury his shots at you and start his discussion back at square one while misrepresenting your position, so others can’t follow along.

Objective Observer,
That’s funny while a was typing you just showed exactly what I was talking about.
I couldn’t find any posts today where he did that.

R.W.: I will take you at your word. I have always said that you were much quicker than I. Men must be better at spotting the enemy. Sorry if I seemed to scold. That was not my intent.

Objective Observer,
That’s OK, like I said I hope things have changed.
Have you looked at the new thread? Our “gift horse” just got scolded by a new guy for being a blind Bush supporter.

Just got your “that’s funny”. I would have to go back to see, and I’m not willing to do that. Like I said, I’ll take you at your word. Maybe I am a little too trusting!!!

I guess one of my problems here (and it is my problem) is that I can only drop in in fits and starts. Other responsibilities and all that.
This is not your headache, it’s mine. I’ll try to pay more attention.
Objective, I’m glad that you don’t think I’m a total idiot. Just a partial one, right?

I had just cancelled the Denver Post because of it’s liberal, secular, politically correct, anti Military, anti country, anti Bush agenda. A friend who was doing likewise brought me your cartoon. She was incensed. So was I. I won’t have to put up with your ink anymore. My wallet and I are walking and we made the right choice. You are one ill puppy…..
