This guy could have been President?

VIETNAM VETERAN JOHN KERRY: [T]here is no reason, Bob, that young American soldiers need to be going into the homes of Iraqis in the dead of night, terrorizing kids and children, you know, women, breaking sort of the customs of the — of — of — of — historical customs, religious customs, whether you like it or not. Iraqis should be doing that.

The Republican response:

MEHLMAN: John Kerry was on Face the Nation this past weekend and he talked about American troops terrorizing Iraqi people, going into Iraqis’ homes. I thought that was an incredibly irresponsible comment.

The schoolyard perspective:

BLITZER: Getting a quick reaction to my interview only within the past few minutes where the chairman of the Republican Party Ken Mehlman who took a strong swipe at John Kerry for comments he made on Face the Nation with Bob Schieffer this Past Sunday. David Wade, a spokesman for John Kerry, just sent us over a statement saying: “Ken Mehlman’s filthy and shameful lie about a decorated combat veteran is disgraceful. Political hack Ken Mehlman and draft dodging, doughnut-eating Rush Limbaugh have something in common, neither of them know anything about how to make American troops safe. John Kerry will continue to speak out about how to succeed in Iraq and protect brave American troops.”

The only torture that I know about first hand is Mike Luckovich. He takes us poor old patriotic Americans and twists us every way he thinks will hurt. Sure, just claim that we torture, we lie, we invade, we occupy, we starve, we kill for oil, we are imperialists, ..the jokes just go on and on. I am so tickled. And I must remember to say , “Oh, how sweet it is. All that great dissent to kill our country and our troops!” WWho ha! What fun!! Mike Luckovich, the great joker and betrayer. And hand him that white surrender flag again. He’s already burned the big red, white and blue one. Let’s have a big hand for Mike the comic traitor.

Bush is turning out to be a bad liar: Paul Mulshine

What bothers me is that of late his lies are so obvious that even the boobs can see through them. I allude, of course, to his recent attempts to placate his base with an alleged “crackdown” on illegal immigration.

*”When I was first running for the presidency back in 2000, I made a promise to the American people. I promised I wouldn’t get our military tied up in nation-building exercises overseas. ‘Absolutely not,’ I said. I also said, ‘I’m going to be judicious as to how to use the military. It needs to be in our vital interest, the mission needs to be clear and the exit strategy obvious.’

“Well, I made a big mistake: I trusted Dick Cheney. What can I say? He sure looked like he knew what he was doing. But I managed to get 2,000 good Americans killed because Cheney and his nutty neocon pals never bothered to draw up that exit strategy I had promised. In fact, they never intended to exit Iraq at all. They thought our troops would be greeted with rose petals and we’d have permanent bases there for nation-building exercises throughout the Mideast.

“Don’t worry, though. I’ve wised up. Cheney’s in the doghouse. I’m finally releasing a national strategy for victory in Iraq. Critics may say it’s a little late to be coming up with a strategy for Iraq. They’re right. It’s three years too late. What can I say? Cheney’s an idiot. And I’m an idiot for trusting him.”*

But even the boobs in his political base are starting to look at Bush’s speeches on Iraq the same way they look at his speeches on illegal immigration. This is, I suspect, a rare moment when a politician might be better off leveling with the American people. If I were his spin doctor, I’d advise him to take advantage of it.

Torturing the Facts by Maureen Dowd

December 7, 2005 Op-Ed Columnist

Torturing the Facts By MAUREEN DOWD Our secretary of state’s tortuous defense of supposedly nonexistent C.I.A. torture chambers in Eastern Europe was an acid flashback to Clintonian parsing.

As chatter spreads about Condi as a possible presidential contender, we are left wondering, once more, who this woman really is. Is she doing this willingly, or is she hemmed in by the powerful men around her? As a former national security adviser who has had the president’s ear for five years, did she try to fight the appalling attempt to shred the Geneva Conventions, or did she go along with it? Is she doing Vice’s nefarious bidding on torture, just as she did on ginning up the case for invading Iraq?

When Ms. Rice was a Stanford professor of international relations, she would have flunked any student who dared to present her with the sort of willfully disingenuous piffle she spouted on the eve of her European trip.

Maybe she figures that if she was able to fool people once with doubletalk about W.M.D., she can fool them again with doubletalk about rendition.

Of course, Midori,Maureen Dowd, etc. don’t like Condi. Condi is very smart, classy, charming, talented, an experienced leader and great American—-all the assets that the two mentioned above do not have. We will have to excuse the excesses of envy shown by those who are seriously lacking.

RW, nice link to the torture survey. I wonder what the survey takers, and the respondents mean when they say torture is okay in “rare instances”? And did you notice that almost 9 out of 10 in South Korea think torture, in those “rare instances’, is okay?

This overwhelming support for torture is all the more fascinating when you consider that US produced computer games based on a future Korean war have been banned by the Seoul government. It seems the action in these games hit, er, too close to home.

Speaking for myself, I think the Bush administration’s opposition to the anti-torture amendment sponsored by Senator John McCain (my former neighbor) is idiotic. Why upset the world by declaring that torture is US policy? And Mike gets it right again. Condi looks like SUCH a hypocrite saying the things she does.

Instead, approve the McCain amendment. And then LIE. Generally, I don’t think torture (and I doon’t mean sleep deprivation or chilly cells) extracts much in the way of information. Shove a hot poker up my bottom and I’ll tell you anything you want to hear, even if it isn’t true, just to stop the pain. Supposedly, when McCain was asked under extreme duress to name US war bigshots, he rattled off the Chicago Cubs batting lineup.

So, while publicly declaring it is firmly and adamantly against torture, the US can (in extreme cases, where it might do some good) use powerful persuasion techniques to get captured terrorists to spill the beans. Keep it quiet. If any reporter finds out, the White House can simply plead ignorance and express serious concern. Plausible deniability is a wonderful thing, dontcha think??

Please note, cAndy and RW that I did NOT post the Maureen Dowd op-ed. I’m too busy enjoying my Paul Krugman.

Merry Christmas.

finch,

Since ml draws accusations of torture about three times a week, the link is a very lame stab at pretending to stay on topic for a couple of posts.

Besides it doesn’t make any difference what laws we pass, they are instructed to claim torture and abuse no matter what we did and moonbats and their fellow travelers in the press buy it.

Have you gone to Midori’s link? I made it a direct link, it’s quite entertaining.

RW, I did see Midori’s link. The same usual mess they call journalism these days.

Did you see that Mike has just posted the same cartoon AGAIN under a different title? Now it is “Condi in Europe”. Somebody at AJC.com is a little off track tonight. I think it is Luckovich. Oh, well, he’s always off track.

Maybe we could make terrorists look this stuff up. A few good Jimmy Carter rabbit/UFO/rodent sightings should break them.

Isn’t this nice- The Valerie Plame Joe Wilson pinkos at the CIA said it would be 10 years before Iran gets nuclear weapons. The International Atomic Energy Agency, a UN Commission says just a few months. And if Israel gets blown off the map, the libs, after they finish the celebration, will blame Bush for it.

The prudent course would be to turn Iran into a vast, glow in the dark parking lot. If they blame you for everything anyway, why not have fun?

Do pinkos really care about jobs or is that just talk? See how your congressman votes on ANWR drilling to find out the truth.

Despite all the recent good news about economic growth, the American Chemistry Council estimates that since 2000 roughly 100,000 jobs and $50 billion have been lost because of rising natural gas prices. Between 2000 and 2002 the plastics industry lost 150,000 jobs and $14.6 billion in economic activity. The American fertilizer industry, also hard hit, lost over one-third of its capacity since 2002.

Drilling in ANWR could produce about 150 billion cubic feet of natural gas a year. That’s not a huge amount, but it’s a start. Drilling in ANWR is good for the economy in other ways as well. Estimates of the number of new jobs it will create range from 250,000 to 735,000.

Merry Christmas!

Mornin’ Andy: Don’t know about everybody else but I would kinda like to see Condi without clothes (she’s hot). Why’d ML have to get all tasteful on this one. It’s news that the rest of the world thinks we’re a bad citizen? Heck, I saw on Yahoo news today that the USA is now being sued by the Inuits (eskimos) because we are the worlds biggest polluter so we are melting all their icebergs. Won’t it be hilarious if not signing the Kyoto Treaty ends up costing us more than if we had signed it? The greatest failure of the present administration is it’s stated indifference to world opinion. “F*#$! ‘em if they don’t like it” just won’t work in the age of globalization.

It is so politically correct to condemn torture, but it is an effective way to gain information. It has been around for centuries only because it is a useful practice. Ask the enemy. Unfortunately, we have to outsource our information gathering to other countries that don’t have a liberal intelligencia problem with it. What the hell does Luckovitch know about torture other than what his goose stepping superiors tell him?
