from al franken’s new book, the truth (with jokes)
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
“You can’t count on them to give you straight information. You can’t count on them to tell us straight why we’re going to war. You can’t count on them to tell us what’s happening over there.
You can’t count on them to do their homework. To keep track of our money. You can’t count on them to punish war profiteers. You can’t count on them to protect our troops.
You can’t rely on them for much of anything. Armor. Veterans’ benefits. You can’t count on them for the true story of how Jessica Lynch was captured, or how Pat Tillman died. Even for how the “Mission Accomplished” sign went up on the U.S.S. Abraham Lincoln. They actually lied about that.
You can’t count on them to count terrorist attacks. You can’t count on them to count civilian victims. You can’t count on them to listen to military commanders and send in enough troops, or to not lie about the commanders asking them to send more troops, or to listen to Colin Powell and not torture people, or to not lie about whether the torture policies started at the top.
You can’t trust them to care. About Iraqis. About Americans.
You can’t trust them to do the work of actually signing killed-in-action letters. You can’t trust them not to lie about not signing killed-in-action letters.
You can’t count on them to acknowledge any mistakes whatsoever. You can’t trust them not to lie when confronted with those mistakes.
You can’t trust them not to believe their own propaganda.
You can’t trust them. Period.”

thanksgiving altercations
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
extended family gathered around the table, enjoying a meal together. a norman rockwell painting come to life.
in reality, tipsy relatives, who don’t like each other much, around the same table, make for potentially explosive/humorous situations.
does anyone have any good thanksgiving with relatives-from-hell stories to report?
happy thanksgiving to all you wingnuts and pinko libs!

murtha on meet the press
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
did you see rep. murtha on meet the press?
it was refreshing to see a politician discussing the situation we find ourselves in iraq without resorting to name-calling, or soundbites like, “when the iraq army stands up, we’ll stand down.”
this guy, a vietnam vet, loves the military , believes that the war has been incompetently waged by rumsfeld and bush and doesn’t think that expending more soldier’s lives will accomplish anything.
he believes the troops at this point are fueling the insurgency and that pulling them to the periphery and letting the iraqis be responsible for their own security, is the least bad option.
he wants america’s leaders on a bipartisan basis to focus on what to do and his stand has hopefully started the debate.

mike attends clinton conference
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
last weeknd, hofstra university hosted a four-day clinton symposium. it looked back at every aspect of the clinton presidency from foreign and domestic policy to the way the media treated clinton.
i was invited invited to participate on a panel entitled, “EDITORIAL CARTOONISTS AND THE CLINTON PRESIDENCY, THE GIFT THAT KEPT ON GIVING.”
the panel consisted of me, two other editorial cartoonists, a cartoonist from the new yorker, plus about a half-million monica cartoons.
prior to my panel, i attended clinton’s speech that kicked-off the conference. he took credit and responsibility for the successes and failures of his administration.
after the speech, i shook his hand. he told me he follows my cartoons and mentioned one he had seen the previous sunday in the ny times.
he was very kind to me despite all the monica cartoons.
below is one of the cartoons i showed during my panel.
