this is interesting. from rawstory.com

Fitzgerald expands probe, believes he can get Rove on more serious charges, lawyers say

Jason Leopold

In one of the boldest moves yet in the 22-month investigation into the outing of a covert CIA agent to a handful of top reporters covering the White House, Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald is extending his probe and pursuing much more serious charges against senior White House officials, specifically President Bush’s Deputy Chief of Staff Karl Rove, lawyers directly involved in the case told RAW STORY Friday.

While many people were left confused by news reports that said Rove wouldn’t be indicted Friday, the lawyers said that Rove remains under intense scrutiny and added that Fitzgerald is betting on the fact that he can secure an indictment against Rove on charges of perjury, obstruction of justice, the misuse of classified information, and possibly other charges, as early as next week.

“This investigation is not yet over, one of the lawyers in the case said. “You must keep in mind that people like Mr. Rove are still under investigation. Rather than securing an indictment on perjury charges against Mr. Rove Mr. Fitzgerald strongly believes he can convince the grand jury that he broke other laws. Advertisement

The lawyers said that in the past month Fitzgerald has obtained explosive information in the case that has enabled him to pursue broader charges such as conspiracy, and civil rights violations against targets like Rove. Specifically, the lawyers said Fitzgerald is focusing on phony intelligence documents that led to the outing of Valerie Plame Wilson’s identity: the documents that claimed Iraq was attempting to purchase yellow-cake uranium from Niger.

A court filing posted on Fitzgerald’s website last week was the first such confirmation that the prosecutor has in fact decided to pursue the broader claims that intelligence the Bush administration used to build support for the Iraq war was flawed and, as a result, the reason many officials inside and outside of the White House went out of their way to out Plame, whose husband was a vocal critic of the Iraq war who was sent on a mission to Niger to investigate allegations that Iraq had attempted to buy Niger from the African country.

“On August 12 and August 20, 2004, grand jury subpoenas were issued to reporter Judith Miller and her employer, the New York Times, seeking documents and testimony related to “conversations between Miller and a specified government official occurring between on or about July 6, 2003 and on or about July 13, 2003, concerning Valerie Plame Wilson (whether referred to by name or by description) or concerning Iraqi efforts to obtain uranium.â€? the filing made by Fitzgerald last year states.

NATO sources told United Press International Monday that Fitzgerald’s team of investigators has sought and obtained documentation on the forgeries from the Italian government.

This claim, which made its way into President Bush’s State of the Union address in January, 2003, was based on falsified documents from Niger and was later withdrawn by the White House.”

Fitzgerald will draw on another grand jury that is already empaneled. Federal law says that a grand jury’s term cannot be extended more than once, which is the case with the grand jury that has been hearing testimony in the case.

mike’s comments on the 2000th american soldier cartoon

thank you all for your posts. i’m glad the cartoon has sparked a debate.

it was an emotional experience writing the names of the americans who have given their lives for our country.

they and those fighting in iraq today are heroes. i can’t say that for those in our government who mislead america into this war, without providing our troops proper equipment, or an exit. through their arrogance, they have dishonored our brave fighting men and women.

Lt. general william odom, national securiy director under ronald reagan, has called this, “the greatest strategic disaster in u. s. history”.

mike feeling guilty

after drawing a cartoon about someone like ralph reed, showing him to be the evil hypocrite that he is, it feels good, as though i’m performing a public service.

sometimes though, after drawing a cartoon, i feel a bit guilty.

such is the case with my newest cartoon on harriet miers, slated to run on sunday.

one of the few things the right and left agree on, is how unqualified this woman is to be on the court. but it’s not her fault she’s in this position. it’s the fault of her ol’ buddy W who nominated her.

she seems like a nice lady, so i feel bad hitting her, but then again, the cartoon, i think, is kind of funny, so i don’t feel THAT bad.

mike nervous

are any of you as nervous as i am about what special prosecutor patrick fitzgerald is up to? if indictments against high officials in the white house are handed out, the reverberations will be huge. it will be like after hurricane katrina struck. the impact will only grow.

there are, from press reports, apparently 22 people associated with the white house that may be targeted. if i was one of those 22, i’d be calling the special prosecutor and trying to make a deal, especially after it was reported yesterday that a midlevel white house employee in dick cheney’s office had been flipped.

maybe this explains why the special prosecutor hasn’t released his findings yet, if this waiting game is making me this nervous, imagine how those under the microscope must be feeling.

FROM THE NY DAILY NEWS, HERE’S THE LATEST: BUSH KNEW

An angry President Bush rebuked chief political guru Karl Rove TWO YEARS AGO for his role in the Valerie Plame affair, sources told the Daily News.

“He made his displeasure known to Karl,” a presidential counselor told The News. “He made his life miserable about this.”

Bush has nevertheless remained doggedly loyal to Rove, who friends and even political adversaries acknowledge is the architect of the President’s rise from baseball owner to leader of the free world.

WHEN YOU READ FURTHER DOWN IN THE PIECE, YOU SEE WHAT MADE BUSH ANGRY WASN’T THE LEAK, IT WAS THAT THEY GOT CAUGHT-

Bush has always known that Rove often talks with reporters anonymously and he generally approved of such contacts, one source said.

But the President felt Rove and other members of the White House damage-control team did a clumsy job in their campaign to discredit Plame’s husband, Joseph Wilson, the ex-diplomat who criticized Bush’s claim that Saddam Hussen tried to buy weapons-grade uranium in Niger.

A second well-placed source said some recently published reports implying Rove had deceived Bush about his involvement in the Wilson counterattack were incorrect and were leaked by White House aides trying to protect the President.

“Bush did not feel misled so much by Karl and others as believing that they handled it in a ham-handed and bush-league way,” the source said.

must’ve been a former school mate

THIS IS A RECENT POST FROM SOMEONE NAMED PHIL-

I still say you were probably the little nerd who got wedgied at lunch every day and are just out for revenge of some sort. As for polls, numbers come and go. Something great happens and he’s numbers could climb back to where they were a year ago when he won the election. As for the 2% rating, do you really want to go there? Phil

mike responds- FOR YOUR INFORMATION PHIL, IT WASN”T “EVERY” DAY.

pro bush ‘toon

after receiving complaints that i’m unfair to president bush, i offered any of you folks who think bush is doing a great job (and that means both of you) the opportunity to come up with a pro-bush cartoon idea that i will illustrate exactly as described and post here on this site for a full week.

the winner will also receive the original drawing.

so far, there have been no takers i’m aware of. this is the time for you to put up or shut up and no one’s responded.

c’mon, if you think bush is a good president, you obviously have a sense of humor, so post an idea my way and it may get chosen. after all, it’s not like there’s a lot of competition.

mike responds to friday’s comments

hi everybody, thank you all for taking time to post your comments. i want to address a couple of the comments and then tell you about a fun idea i have.

first off, because i’m such a lousy typist, everything’s going to be lowercase, because it’s a little quicker for me.

next, there are numerous comments about me not being fair and balanced. well, it’s not a cartoonist’s job to be fair or balanced.

i do agree that i hit president bush often. there are two reasons for that. first, whoever’s in charge, whether it’s bush , clinton, etc., becomes my main character, kind of like my own garfield the cat. when clinton was president, i hit him all the time, especially for monica. that said, i look back on the clinton years nostalgically as the time when a president lied to us about sex, not war.

the second reason i hit bush is because i think he’s the worst president in american history and judging from the latest polls, more and more americans agree with me. among african-americans his approval rating is 2%!

another thing i want to mention is my political orientation, which would be best described as a conservative democrat. in 2008, i will probably vote for whom i consider to be the best democrat, because under bush, the economic focus has been on helping the rich. i’d like to have a president who cares about the poor and middle class. but what will be more important than democrat or republican, will be competence. that’s what we’ve lacked the last five years and after iraq, giant deficits that leave us economically vulnerable, katrina, michael brown, harriet miers etc., etc. i want competence. and if the most competent presidential candidate is a republican, that’s whom i’m voting for.

ok, here’s an idea i think might be fun. for those of you who think i’ve been unfair to bush, here’s your chance to right a wrong. post a cartoon idea that highlights something you feel bush has done right. if you think his handling of katrina was great, come up with a cartoon idea on that and post it. i’ll choose the three best ideas, post them and then you all can vote on which is best. i will draw up the winning entry exactly as described and post it on ths site for a week and send the original drawing to the winner.

Karl Rove waits

yo, yo, yo, party people, welcome to my blog!

this is my first official post. i’m not sure how this whole thing is going to develop. if i come up with ideas that cynthia tucker rejects, i’ll occasionally post the rough sketches, so that you all can call and email cynthia to tell her how unfair she is. sometimes i’ll mention things that interest me and see if they interest you. i’ll occasionally monitor what you all are posting and respond. i’m a one-fingered typist, so my posts will be short. i look forward to your feedback.
