Born and raised in Northern California, Andrea Cornell Sarvady received a degree in English from San Francisco State University and a Master's Degree in Counseling with an emphasis in Marital and Family Therapy from the University of San Francisco.
Her writing career has developed in tandem with a variety of educational endeavors including teaching developmentally disabled adults, running a school volunteer program in San Francisco and a peer counseling program in Brooklyn, New York. She has run workshops and done crisis counseling for a variety of groups, from siblings of the disabled to teens coping with trauma.
Her articles on topics such as the pressures of domesticity, religion in the workplace and the aftermath of 9/11 have appeared in a variety of regional and national magazines. In 2004 Andrea saw the publication of The Modern Neurosis Handbook, a satirical take on modern life. Three books followed in rapid succession: two film guides (The Ultimate Girls' Movie Survival Guide and Leading Ladies) and a childcare book, Baby Gami, which became an Amazon bestseller.
In 2007, Sarvady took over the left-leaning position in the column following the untimely death at the age of 42 of "woman to woman" column founder, Diane Marie Glass. She says of her predecessor: "Week after week, Diane wrote with wit, elegance and a fiery intellect. Consider every word I write for this column dedicated to Diane and those who still hold her dear, loved ones and readers alike."
Sarvady currently writes and teaches writing in Atlanta, Georgia, where she lives with her husband Glen and their three daughters. She can be reached at Asarvad@gmail.com
