Washington, here I come

Tuesday, April 14, 2009

After the election of Barack Obama, thousands of would-be bureaucrats, ambitious bloggers and hopeful public servants moved to Washington, inspired by the opportunity to work for — or at least in the vicinity of — a historic presidency. I envied them. As a political junkie, I can’t think of a more exciting time to be in the nation’s capital.

Now, I’m getting my chance. This summer, I’m moving to Washington to become The Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s Washington-based political columnist. I’ve been editorial page editor since 1992, and it’s time for me to find a new challenge. Avid newspaper readers already know how much the business has changed over those years, with the printed page less important to younger readers while online commentary and social networking have become a mainstay. In addition to writing two columns a week, I’ll be starting a blog. (Though, so far, I’m resisting Twitter!)

In any medium, I’ll have a lot to write about. Obama’s presidency has turned out to be historic not only because he’s black but also because of the deepening recession and continuing global threats. With the banking crisis, home foreclosures and increasing joblessness, Obama may have more on his plate than even he bargained for. I’ll be writing about all those important national topics while still keeping an eye on local issues, such as Atlanta’s troubles with transportation and gridlock.

I’ll miss Atlanta, the city I’ve called home for most of the years since I left college. I live in a neighborhood I love, Inman Park, which is just now coming into its own as a vibrant community. And I’m not looking forward to the aggravations of a new city, like finding the good bakeries, the right dentist and (let’s name the important stuff) a hair stylist.

I am looking forward to museums, the National Mall and excellent public transit. And writing about the Obama administration and what it means to Atlanta.
