OLYMPIC GAMES: Cohesive community sets example

Sunday, May 31, 2009

In addition to the obvious economic benefits of Atlanta’s formal introduction to a much larger segment of the world’s population, the Centennial Olympic Games inspired our community to come together in the achievement of a common objective.

Our citizens witnessed firsthand the Games as a demonstration and celebration of our often-stated belief that there is much more to be gained by focusing on those things we have in common, rather than emphasizing our differences.

Even the tragedy of the bombing could not destroy the inherent determination of Atlantans to rise above the circumstances with the dignity and grace for which we have always been known.

The pride we share in our city, our heritage and in each other was never greater, and reaffirmed this community’s confidence in our collective ability to successfully face and overcome any future challenge.

Billy Payne was leader of Atlanta’s Olympic bid and president and CEO of the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games.
