UNITY: City always manages to overcome
Sunday, May 31, 2009
As an Atlanta native born into the Great Depression, I’ve certainly seen many challenges conquered — economic pressure, racial tension, gender suppression, religious defamation, labor disputes, and more. With every issue, Atlantans act progressively to find solutions, overcome differences and conquer adversity.
In spite of Atlanta’s reputation for gentle Southern manners, there is a boldness here. No matter the social pressures, Atlantans down through history have come together for mutual interests. When black students defied segregation laws, they were met by whites around the conference table, and differences were reformed. When “flower children” took over the 10th Street area, they were required to obey city ordinances but guaranteed their civil rights.
I don’t make light of today’s monetary mess. I do have faith in our city, however, and its ability to come out a winner!
