WATKINSVILLE -- Police have arrested a man who they say impersonated an officer by wearing a T-shirt with a badge printed on it and held a family at gunpoint.

Watkinsville Police Chief Lee O'Dillon said one of the victims recognized the suspect as an old schoolmate.

They arrested 27-year-old Marcus Brandon Powers on charges of impersonating a police officer, false imprisonment and DUI.

O'Dillon said the man went to the home around 3 a.m. Saturday and held a couple and their four grown children at gunpoint. He announced he was looking for drugs and drug money.

When one of the victims called 911 and said the real police were on the way the man said he was going outside to wait for backup units and a drug dog. He instead got into his car and fled.
