Tow truck driver called to DUI scene also charged with DUI
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Perhaps this was one call the tow truck driver should have declined.
A northwest Georgia wrecker driver sent to tow away the car of a suspected drunk driver was himself arrested for DUI after a state trooper smelled alcohol on his breath.
The chain of events leading to the wrecker driver's arrest began Wednesday night when a Georgia State Patrol trooper stopped Shawn Hayes on I-75 north of Dalton for a minor traffic violation, according to WTVC-TV.
When the trooper got out of his cruiser and approached Hayes, he sped away, State Patrol Cpl. Darren Gleaton told the Chattanooga television station.
Hayes led authorities on a chase that ended when Hayes ran off U.S. 41 and hit a pole. According to Gleaton, Hayes was driving under the influence and had four pounds of marijuana in his car.
Authorities called for a wrecker to tow away Hayes' mangled car, and when Christopher Chaffin of Sexton Wrecker Service arrived, "the trooper there detected alcohol from his breath," Gleaton told WTVC.
Chaffin was also charged with DUI.
